Pomona pool to be heated Cooking classes back at Community House After a lull in activity at the kitchen of the Pomona and District Community House Lawson Shed, cooking lessons are about to start up again. Longtime chef, Sean Bowman, (above) will head up a series of five lessons that will cover a variety of themes, including hearty casseroles and delicious Thai food.

The Pomona State School Parents and Citizens Association has been successful in obtaining a $26,000 Community Benefit Fund grant to meet the cost of heating the Pomona pool so that it can operate nine months of the year.

The pool sits adjacent to the school, but is available for anyone to use.

Pair helping to connect the community Better quality of life and independent living for older Australians coping with their age or disability was the theme of a ‘Community Connect’ gathering at Pomona last month.

A Community House initiative, the sessions are designed to bring people together to discuss topics of interest, or to simply be entertained.

Speakers at the April gathering, held at the Lawson Shed, were Barry Sheridan, of Black Mountain, and Kerry Martin from Queensland Support Services and Solutions (QSSS), which provides respite care tailored to the individual needs of people with a physical disability.

Pomona Youth Week activities enjoyed by people of all ages The area around Pomona skate park was alive with activity and colour as Pomona celebrated National Youth Week on April 10th.

Tie-dyeing, jewellery making, skate boarding, mural painting, and music were amongst the activities enjoyed by over fifty young people.

“It was great to see so many local youth participating and having fun,” said Kathryn Shewring who coordinated the event with youth service provider, United Synergies.

“We owe a big thank you to United Synergies who supplied everything and set up the day,” she said.

The ‘’chill-out’ area was a popular attraction at Youth Week.

“I hope we can do something as good next year!”

Locals gather to consider Celebrating 25 years with the best show ever plans for Memorial Hall The Cooroora Woodworkers Club has turned 25 this year, and to celebrate this milestone the club is staging the Cooroora Wood and Craft Show 2014 to be the best ever with a great schedule of woodworking demonstrations by nationally recognized masters.

The line-up at the Memorial Hall includes cabinetry (Bob Chaplin), scroll-saw work (Maureen Bowden and Pam Window), carving (Peter Bradford) and turning (George Pearce, Alan Warner and Dennis Donnelly) while rustic furniture (Dave Putland), rocking horse making (John Warrick), toy making (Robert Gray), pen turning (Graham Eastman) and wood milling (Alex Finlay and the team) can be seen at the Lowermill precinct.

Visitors will be able to examine the fine woodwork entries in the competitions and also learn how it is done.

Many items will be on sale.

Club president John Gygar says that this is a great opportunity to meet club members who are ready to answer your questions and show you their work. Age is no barrier to woodworking.

The Cooroora Woodworkers Club has a membership of over 120 made up of both men and women who have found a great deal of satisfaction and achievement in working with wood. Why not ask about joining our club, new members receive a warm welcome.

When members of the Pomona Memorial Hall Committee wanted ideas for how they could improve the design of the building while improving its heritage character, they called on students from the Queensland University of Technology to consider ideas at a gathering of about 40 hall users and members of the public.

Held last month, the committee joined Pomona and District Community House in hosting eight students from the university’s School of Design to put their skills to work, exploring various options. A priority for the committee is better toilet facilities, but students were given free reign to consider other alternatives.

Students take a fresh look at the design of Pomona Memorial Hall The Pomona Memorial Hall is an iconic building at the heart of the town that could be redesigned to better serve its users, according to architectural students from the Queensland University of Technology who have ‘adopted’ Pomona as the focus of their course work for the first six months of 2014.

Third year School of Design students have set about designing a new railway station, an extension to the Noosa Museum, an amphitheatre for Cooroora Creek Park, an eco-tourism lodge and other imaginary buildings for the town to be assessed for 20 per cent of their marks for Semester one.

Their work will be revealed at a presentation day to be held at the QUT next month.

For the past few months, the students have used Pomona as an outdoor laboratory, re-interpreting the streetscapes and spaces to plan new buildings and public places.

The hypothetical exercise counts towards the students’ first semester marks and have caught the eye of Noosa Council placemaking personnel interested in seeing whether any of the ideas are practical.

The students will give their presentations in an all-day session at the QUT Gardens Point campus, Brisbane, on Wednesday, 11 June. They are eager to get feedback on their work from the local community. If you would like to attend, contact Pomona Community House for further details.

Anglican minister leaves parish The ministry of the Cooroora Anglican Parish will change following the departure of the Rev. Gillian Moses to a new post in Brisbane after two years of dedicated service. Rev. Moses officiated at her last service on 27 April.

The church has begun looking for a minister who would be interested in serving the local community part-time. New lease of life for refurbished Cooran Hall A four-year upgrading program for the Cooran Hall was completed recently, with the opening of a new state-of -the-art kitchen, which will allow the building to be used for greater variety of functions and events.

The refurbishment was the result of hard work on the part of Cr Tony Wellington firstly, an active committee and enthusiastic band of volunteers, most especially Irene and Rob Gibbs.

NBN SEEKS NEW TOWER SITE Contractors working for NBN Co. to site a 35-metre wireless broadband tower serving Cooran are looking for new locations for the structure after local residents overwhelmingly objected to the original proposal to build it close to Coles Creek Road.

A network spokesperson said the preferred site had not been abandoned, but additional options were being explored.

Community Connect morning tea features comedy & poetry On Wednesday 14 May, visitors to the next ‘Community Connect’ morning tea will find themselves entertained with comedy and poetry.

Comedy duo, ‘the Misfits’, will be presenting an assortment of skits which they say are, “short, imaginative acts that are light-hearted, funny, sometimes serious, but always entertaining.”

Council to test Kin Kin quarry extraction limits Noosa Council will seek legal advice about whether it can limit the amount of rock that can be extracted each year from the Kin Kin quarry, thereby allaying residents’ fears that it will become a mega-quarry generating scores of truck movements on local roads.

Councillor Tony Wellington said the council owes it to the Kin Kin community to resolve just how intensively the quarry may operate.

Noosa Council passed a motion that extended the life of the quarry. “That motion included the clear intent that there was to be no increase in the existing scale and intensity of the quarry. Any such increase would have to be the subject of an additional development application.

“This latest move is not about setting new conditions on the quarry. Rather, it’s an attempt to determine whether a pre-determined capacity is already in place. That’s why council needs expert legal advice,” he said.

“At the time of council’s decision, the operators, Readymix, had estimated their capacity as being 140,000 tonnes per year. Arguably, council’s aim was to not exceed that capacity,” said Cr. Wellington.

In related moves, the council will write to state authorities regarding both the suitability of the Pomona-Kin Kin haul road and to ensure that appropriate operating conditions are being met on the quarry site.

In 2010 the Kin Kin Community Group took court action contesting the quarry approval. By this time Neilsen’s Quality Gravels had taken over as quarry operator. “There are aspects of the legal judgement that raise questions about the limits of the quarry’s operations,” Cr. Wellington said.

A separate motion resolved not to proceed with any further efforts to upgrade Sheppersons Lane, a gravel road leading to the Kin Kin quarry. The motion noted that maintenance of the road is the responsibility of the quarry operator.
