Motorcycles and visitors set to rumble into town On Sunday 6 July, the usual quiet start to the day in the sleepy town of Pomona will be stirred by the sound of nearly 200 bikes gathering for the start of the eighth Annual Pomona Poker Run. State government anti-bikie laws are no impediment to local motorcycle enthusiasts enjoying a ride in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Fire station funds confirmed in budget The 2014-15 state government budget includes a sum of $1.8 million to fund construction of Pomona’s new fire station.

It will open early in 2015.

The $1.8 million total includes almost $1.6 million for construction of the building and $250,000 for earthworks and removal of contaminated soil, the legacy of the site’s former use as a motor repair garage. This work has started.

Contractors G. and K. Lawson Construction will start construction work this month, a spokesperson for the Minister for Police Fire and Emergency Services, Jack Dempsey MP, confirmed.

The new fire station will occupy a prominent site in Reserve Street, adjacent to the Pomona ambulance station, itself earmarked for a $15,000 re-paint. (See story page 3.) Continued page 2

The Poker Run, which will wind its way through some of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’s most beautiful scenery, is a major fundraiser for the Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, a project of the CooroyPomona Lions Club.

This, ‘big blind special’ starts at Stan Topper Park, Pomona at 9am and takes participants on a relaxing ride, ending at a mystery destination.

Staying poker-face about the run, the only hint that organiser, Stephen Stewart, will give is in the theme of this year’s run, Dam to Dam. “It’s going to be a great day,” he said.

“Along the ride participants collect playing cards from each stop and the person holding the best hand at the end of day is declared the winner.

The Men’s Shed Pomona group hopes it can obtain the old fire station in Factory Street as its headquarters.

The ministerial spokesperson said: “If in 2015 Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advise the former station is surplus to needs, the old station will be placed on the Government Land Register and disposed of in accordance with the new Government Transaction Policy.

“If no other government agency expresses an interest, the property will proceed to sale on the open market, at which time community organisations would be able to bid for the property,” he said.

As the Noosa Hinterland community struggles to comprehend the impact of the decision by the ANZ Bank to close Pomona’s only bank on 31 October 2014, practical alternatives are being considered, including attracting another bank to our town and region of around 8000 people.

The Bendigo Bank had considered establishing a presence at Pomona, but, until now, decided against such a move because of the ANZ monopoly. The potential to change this decision is up to you.

While some do banking via internet, many older residents don’t; and businesses in the town rely upon the bank to process their daily takings and prevent thefts.

The worry is that people who travel elsewhere for face-to -face banking will buy their petrol and groceries at that new location – taking business revenue from our local economy. The impact that could cause is equal to our losing around eight to 10 small businesses.

If you want to do something practical to retain banking services in Pomona, consider writing a letter of support.

POMONA AMBULANCE STATION GETS FACELIFT Pomona’s ambulance station is to get a facelift by the end of the year.

Queensland Ambulance Service Commissioner, Russell Bowles, has confirmed that $15,000 has been set aside for essential repairs and maintenance, as well as painting of the exterior in colours similar to that of the proposed new fire station next door, which is due to be constructed and opened early in 2015.

NOOSA RESPITE CENTRE The Noosa Respite Centre, based at Tewantin , offers a door-to-door bus service to pick up and drop off elderly residents wishing to participate in a daily round of activities. Centre-based day care is available from 8.45am to 4pm, providing social interaction for residents and respite carers. A carer support group meets at the centre on the third Tuesday of each month at 1.30pm.

Artist completes commissioned work in Thailand Local award-winning artist and art tutor, Marilyn Spencer, has recently returned to Australia after completing a commissioned art work at a new spiritual and healing retreat some 20km north of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.

Initially asked to do a mural 2m x 2m, the final art work turned out to be 4m x 3m.

Starting with the basic concept of a Buddha, Bodhi leaves, red colour and water as a must, the mural was completed by gilding the Buddha and leaves with gold and including crushed mother of pearl glass through the water. Marilyn says of the finished mural; “I am thrilled with the outcome. The mural looked stunning; the photos don’t do it justice”.

The painting was so well accepted she was asked to do another one, this time depicting an angel and a waterlily. With only two weeks to complete the work, speed was of the essence.

Trading as ‘Chic Image Pomona’, Marilyn teaches beginners to advanced students one day per week from home. For only $25.00 (normally $50.00), Marilyn will tutor you for three hours.

Traditional painting is her specialty in oil, pastel or acrylic. Contemporary workshops are also available.

Marilyn says that completing the art works was a challenge on many levels, not least that the heat and humidity were unbearable after 11.30am and work wasn’t possible until later in the day. In addition, she says, she had to balance her ladder on rocks while painting which she says was, “just a little tricky!” As a traditional artist, painting in this style was a new and

unexpected experience for Marilyn.

It wasn’t all hard work however. Marilyn loved listening to the tranquil water trickling through the surrounding rice paddies while she was painting. Every afternoon she was taken to see magnificent places outside the usual tourist areas returning to paint as the day cooled.

After winning an award at the Queensland ‘Art Spectacular’ in Brisbane 2012, Marilyn has been in high demand. She has recently been asked to paint

“Everyone can be an artist with correct tutoring,” she says, “My students have won some fifteen art awards around Queensland”. Marilyn can also assist her students by supplying quality art materials at trade prices.

Entries closing soon for 2014 Noosa Art Award Noosa Regional Gallery is reminding artists and designers that entries for the 2014 Noosa Art Award close on 15 June.

Mobile government office helps people with entitlement advice What is 17.2m long, 4.2m high and weighs 25 tonnes? It is a massive mobile office for up to five Department of Human Services staff that travels around the country offering advice to people about their Centrelink and Medicare entitlements.

Resembling a giant mobile library, the behemoth came to Kin Kin and Pomona last month, primarily to advise people about drought assistance relief (Noosa is still drought-declared), but found a surprisingly large number of people with other inquiries.

For those who ‘missed the bus’, Pomona Community House is an access point for Centrelink and Medicare, where a computer, telephone, fax machine and forms are available for doing business.

However, mobile service centre manager Tricia Florent said many of the clients interviewed last month appreciated face-to-face contact.

The department has two such mobile offices, staffed by people drawn from Centrelink and Medicare offices in Canberra and across the country. They visit small towns routinely, but are also available to travel to disaster areas where they assist people with emergency assistance.

“It is great to get out, see the countryside and assist people with the same level of service that is provided at one of our larger offices.

It is surprising who we see – some who pop in are often unaware of the services to which they are entitled,” Tricia said.

The gallery’s annual art award program has reinvented itself under the new Noosa Council to become the Noosa Art Award, a slight shift in direction from a purely 3D art prize to include 2D works and is open to artists and designers across the nation, with the major prize of $7000 cash and the prestige of their work acquired into the Noosa Council corporate art collection.

A total prize pool of $12,000 is on offer to contemporary artists and designers. A selection of finalists will be chosen from the entries and will be presented in an exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery from 28 August to 5 October, 2014. The gala opening will be held on Friday 29 August at 6pm.

Once again, the Friends Noosa Regional Gallery will offer the ever-popular People’s Choice award of $1000, along with two Emerging Artist category awards of $500 each for tertiary level students working in 2D and 3D. Noosa Regional Gallery director, Nina Shadforth said the Noosa Art Award attracts national attention and aims to create a national platform for the artistic pursuits of practicing artists and designers in the Noosa, Gympie and wider Sunshine Coast communities,.

Frocks and flowers a winning combination for Noosa Landcare Canapés and Callistemons, a fashion flair and native plant fusion extravaganza hosted

by Noosa and District Landcare on 24 May proved a popular success, with guests coming dressed in their favourite and extravagant native flora themed outfit for a night of fun at The Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa, Noosa.

Canapés and Callistemons included competitions such as ‘best dressed’ and ‘best native accessory’, while the raffle prize pool included a night’s stay at The Outrigger.

The 84 people attending raised $880 for Landcare.

Guests were treated to canapés, drinks, live music and beautiful body art by Katz Body Art, setting the scene for what became an exciting and colourful night.

Noosa and District Landcare General Manager, Phil Moran, was impressed with the entusiasm of those who came along.

“We had an amazing time at Canapés and Callistemons.

There were some amazing outfits and accessories, great live music and incredible body art,” Phil said.

“Not only did guests have a terrific time, but all were keen to raise their awareness of Noosa and District Landcare.”

The event was part of the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Public Relations Course, where students had to work in close partnership with Noosa and District Landcare to create an event that was exciting and unique.

Noosa Festival of Water celebrates decade of success The tenth annual Noosa Festival of Water will be held on 29 June at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, Lake Macdonald Drive, Cooroy, from 10 am until 3 pm. The spectacular setting for the annual celebration and the free entertainment make the annual celebration a favourite with families.

Held in conjunction with the water festival is the Lake Mac Catch and Release Bass Fishing Competition, which, this year is supported with prizes on offer from Hooked on Angling and Outdoors, Tewantin.

Pomona Pacers celebrate major milestone for club During April the Pomona Pacers celebrated their fourth anniversary – what an achievement. It requires drive and enthusiasm to form a group like the Pomona Pacers and keep it active.

Congratulations and well done to the organisers and all walkers over the years.

In recognition of this milestone the group headed to the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden at Forest Glen to explore the recently opened Upland Bushwalk at the Gardens. It was a delightful morning exploring the natural bush track with its interesting bird life and diverse forest. And as no birthday would be complete without some indulgence, the walkers were rewarded with morning tea at Forest Glen to celebrate.

Arts news in brief WILDLIFE ART EXHIBITION OPENS Since the 1980’s, Susanna Job has concentrated on pen and ink drawings for ten of her twenty-six exhibitions.

As parents, we all worry about how we can bring out the best in our children.

The majority of her work has focused on endangered flora and fauna as she is passionate about conserving what is left of our unique rainforest species.

Fortunately, there are people who can help and offer professional advice.

Thirty years in North Queensland fuelled her love and passion for this favourite subject. To this day Susanna has a deep love and respect for this remarkable habitat.

The Community House is negotiating with The Parenting Centre, based at Maleny, to present a series of workshops, but first we want your input. Please have a look at the list of possible topics below and let us know which ones you would be interested in attending.

Unfortunately, Cyclone Larry devastated her property of two hectares of rainforest at Mena Creek, near Innisfail. Inspiration was taken from Susanna in a matter of minutes destroying part of her.

The house survived but Susanna soon realised she could not live there any longer and relocated to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to her family.

Susanna writes……”I tend to begin a new work and complete it before commencing another piece. In this manner I do not lose my initial passion and choose whatever medium is most suitable for my current subject.”

NOOSA PERMACULTURE BRINGS NATURE AND ENCONOMY TOGETHER The June meeting of Permaculture Noosa will be held on 19 June at the Cooroy Memorial Hall, starting at 7pm. The evening will begin with a marketplace, where members share, swap buy and sell the surplus homegrown produce. A guest speaker takes the stage at 7.30pm, to be followed by supper at 9pm. (Gold coin donation requested.)

The event presents an excellent way for people to learn about permaculture and also the activities of a seed savers’ group that meets at Pomona monthly.

The seed savers group meets in the morning on the second Thursday of every month at ‘A Touch of the Past’ Coffee Shop, Pomona, to process seeds for a seed bank and to share experiences as gardeners. Come and join at the next meeting on 10 July.

Final contract awarded for Bruce Highway Section A Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd has been awarded the third and final contract for the Bruce Highway Upgrade (Cooroy to Curra) Section A project, between Cooroy and Federal. The contract is for the southern half of the project, and involves duplicating 6.5km of highway between the Cooroy southern interchange and Cudgerie Drive. The work includes:  construction of two new northbound lanes west of the existing highway  rehabilitating the existing highway to provide two lanes southbound  upgrading the existing Cooroy southern interchange and Six Mile Creek highway culverts transforming the current intersection of Nandroya Road and Myall Street into a roundabout.

Grant helps send Cooran students to Canberra The Cooran community has raised a fantastic $8000 towards the cost of sending 38 year six and seven local primary school students to Sydney and Canberra on a week-long excursion later this month – the latest contribution being a cheque for $500 from the Cooran Memorial Hall Committee.

The committee president, Kim Bryant, handed the cheque to Cooran State School principal, Michael Cookman, at a school assembly on 10 June. The fund-raising means that the 16
