Pomona Dojo takes gold at 13th Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate-do Championships A team of five karate students from JKA Pomona dojo ( Zacchary Hennings, Maddison Debono, Jacinta Waretini, Tyndle Colley and Jesse Vines) travelled to Japan to compete in the 13th Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate-do Championships 2014 at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.

Countries from all over the world who are members of the Japan Karate Association attended the world cup representing their country. This event is normally held every two years. The students all competed in both kata (form) and kumite (sparring).

Zacchary Hennings won a gold medal in 14 year old boys kumite. There were 38 boys in this division. Zacc won four fights against competitors from Canada, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Russia. He then won the final against Brazil. Zacc's achievement was more than just winning a gold medal. He was one of only two Australians to win a medal , the other being a silver.

is a huge achievement in the Japan Karate Association tournament scene and for JKA Australia. Zacc also competed in kata but lost to England in the first round, one of the finalists.

Maddison Debono finished in the top eight in her 13 year old events for both kata and kumite. There were 23 and 24 girls in each event. She had a bye and then won against Canada to get to the kata finals. She then ranked 7th in the finals, with Japan ranking 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. In kumite she beat South Africa and Canada, to get to the top 8 competitors of the division. She then lost the next round to Japan with Japan getting 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Fantastic result for Maddi.

Jacinta Waretini also finished in the top 8 in the same division as Maddi, 13 year girls. Jacinta won 2 rounds of kata against South Africa and Canada to get to the final 8. In the finals play off, she then ranked 5th behind Japan, who More importantly he was the only non- took all of the 1st to 4th place. Tyndle Colley competed in the 14 year old girls group, with 30 girls in the group. In kata she did a great kata but unfortunately lost to South Africa. In kumite she tied in her match against Denmark. After being ahead in the match it then tied and went to a judges’ decision which she lost 3-2. Very close and unfortunately it didn't go her way.

Jesse Vines competed in the 16 to 18 years boys. This division was a large group of 62 boys. In kata Jesse got to the top 16 and then lost to Japan. In kumite he won his first round against England and then lost the next one to a strong fighter from Germany.

This group of students from Pomona have done extremely well for the expectations that we had before we left and they have certainly put Pomona on the map in the Japan Karate Association world. Great achievement by all!!

The kids travelled to Japan with their families and were able to enjoy and share the Japanese culture and many of their traditions. Some of the highlights were staying in a traditional ryokan (inn) in Yamanouchi near Nagano, with tatami mat floor, rice paper walls, futon beds, rice pillow, traditional breakfast, and a visit to an onsen (hot bath). We also visited the 5th station on Mt Fuji, traditional Nikko, Matsumoto castle, Harajuku, Ginza, Asakusa markets, all with various experiences.

Thank you very much to all in the community that supported our fundraising efforts to enable the kids to represent their country in Japan and experience the culture of Japan.

Graeme is passionate about humans and their relationship with the earth. Graeme is a sought-after speaker, specialising in soil health, plant health and animal health. He is also an expert in human nutrition and his fascinating presentations cover every aspect of wellness. These seminars are often described as ‘life changing’ and ‘inspirational’.

He created the internationally acclaimed, four-day, Certificate in Sustainable Agriculture and authored the associated, 300+ page training manual. Graeme has spent most of this year abroad and visited more than 30 countries in that time.

The urban agriculture group ‘Kiss the Ground’ organised meetings for him with the Los Angeles mayor and the city’s head of waste management. They are working cooperatively on making Los Angeles a zero-waste city by 2015.

Pomona & District Community House AGM On Saturday 18th October, Committee, Community House members and guests gathered in the Lawson Shed for the 19th Annual General Meeting of the Pomona & District Community House.

Guests included Councilor Sandy Bolton and Councilor Tony Wellington from Noosa Council.

In her address, outgoing President, Dawn Gwynne, emphasised the position of the Community House as an organisation committed to building community connectedness and social well -being by linking people, skills and resources.

Dawn pointed to the diversity of backgrounds represented in our clientele and expressed the need for tolerance in the face of a changing world and changing communities. Dawn congratulated the team at the Community House – the volunteers and the staff – for their hard work over the last 12 months and their contribution to the community. She made particular mention of the generosity of our volunteers, without whom we could not do what we do.

The Community House would like to thank Dawn for her outstanding contribution as President over the last three years. Her sense of justice and fairness and her warmth in dealing with the committee, the volunteers, the staff and the public has been greatly appreciated.

Dawn steps down in order to spend more time at her local business, Gilded Lily. Dawn will continue as a committee member.

The Pomona & District Community House looks forward to a productive and exciting year ahead and to celebrating 20 years of community service at our 2015 AGM.

Talking up hinterland theatre getting more theatre back on our local stages”, said Andrée. “We will be meeting with hinterland residents and industry stakeholders in November to gather information that will help us plan future Farmhouse Theatre productions”.

hen was the last time you had a night out at the theatre? Did you laugh or cry?

What type of theatre do you want to see in our heritage hinterland venues?

Councillor Frank Wilkie, Chair of the Regional Arts Development Fund Committee at Noosa Council, will open the meeting. As a playwright and performer, he has a wealth of experience to bring to the conversation and he is keen to hear residents’ ideas.

These questions and more will be part of a community conversation being hosted by Farmhouse Theatre Company and Pomona Community House from 5.45pm - 7pm on Tuesday 25 November at Majestic Theatre.

This public conversation has flowed from an animated chat between hinterland locals Louise Bezel and Andrée Stark. “We bumped into each other outside the newsagents last year and by the time we parted we’d agreed to stage a play at the Majestic. The dreaming has gone on from there”, recalls Louise of Farmhouse Theatre Company.

So come along to the community conversation at 5.45pm on Tuesday 25 November at Majestic Theatre and help get local theatre alive in the hinterland.

Cooroora PCYC emergency services cadets clean up at state awards During the last week of the school holidays, six cadets and I were treated to a Reward and Recognition camp at the Gold Coast along with eight others from Hervey Bay, Mackay, Inglewood and Biggenden, for being the top cadet volunteers in the state.

We have all given close to 200 hours volunteering each in the past year at a variety of activities from King of the Mountain, Anzac Day, Kilcoy Rural fire training, Exercise Sandpiper, Noosa Ultimate Sports Festival, various community disaster preparedness days, Brisbane FOGS Career Expo to the Noosa Triathlon as well as training every week.

Each day at camp we experienced a different emergency service, encompassing a day as a recruit at the Oxley Police Academy; confined space rescue and fire fighting at Whyte Island Fire Academy; Volunteer Marine rescue activities at Southport VMR; “Fire fighter down” a scenario by Cedar Creek, Wolffdene Rural fire in which cadets had to search for and give first aid to injured fire fighters in the field; Surf lifesaving activities such as board riding, surf safety and flag

It’s the Wild West in Cooroy for 10th Anniversary!

Everyone loves a parade, especially one that is wild – Wild West that is! That’s the theme for this year’s Bendigo Bank Street Parade. One of the highlights of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations, the parade makes its way up Maple Street and back and attracts up to 8,000 spectators.

Council has approved funding of $1200 and $1500 for Kin Kin Community Group Inc. and Lions Club of Cooroy and Pomona Inc, respectively, to deliver Christmas events this year.

Kin Kin Community Group will receive $1200 in the Community Grants 2014/2015 funding 10

toward its community Christmas celebrations.

The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club will receive $1500 to host the Pomona Night of Lights 2014 festival.

Mayor Noel Playford said Council assessed the club's applications early to ensure the funds were delivered ahead of the festive season.

"These funds will help deliver Christmas spirit to the hinterland."

The Pomona Pacers are going strong at the moment with plenty of new walkers and lots of excursions in our beautiful local area. Our new walkers Andrea and Pam are particularly keen and set a good pace for our morning walks.

Members of the group also recently participated in the Great Noosa Trail Walk in early October and the walk up Mt Cooroy on 19 October. So its all go for our walkers.

Noosa Council to replace wheelie bins free Noosa Council has announced that it will replace damaged wheelie bins free of charge because Coucnil wants to ensure that everyone’s bin is vermin-proof, hygienic and safe to use.

The 8th & 9th November 2014 is the 17th annual running of the Historic Noosa Hill Climb – “THE HILL”

If you have a damaged wheelie bin, split lid or side, now is the time to contact Council directly.

Thursday, 27 November the Pomona State School’s annual community event ‘Pomona in the Park’ is on again. Family and friends from across the hinterland will once again converge on Stan Topper Park with their picnic rugs and hampers for an evening of fun and entertainment that culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. As the time rapidly approaches, class teachers and students are busy planning performances that will be a major part of the Arts curriculum for term 4.

Previous years have seen the stage come alive with young Roy Orbisons, Smurfs, a tribute to the Addams Family, surfie dudes and disco divas to rival Donna Sommers! Generous sponsorship by our major sponsors, Pages Furnishers and IGA Pomona, allow the students the opportunity to perform with the support of professional sound and lighting technicians and to showcase their achievements in the arts.

An Afternoon in the Aircon?

Pomona Community House is a good place to be when the weather outside is a few degrees more than comfortable. It’s not a bad place to meet for a cuppa either.

People sometimes hire rooms here to run classes, eg Pilates, or as a venue to meet customers for business or such. So, if you would like to run a class for payment, you can talk to us about room hire.

If you would be interested in being part of a group to meet here – eg to play chess, scrabble, do needlework crafts, share skills in a language, drawing or whatever else you can think of, please register an expression of interest at Community House so we can see what things people are interested in and then how to fine-tune days and times.

Men’s Shed Pomona finally finds a home!

After almost 2 years of looking for suitable premises, the Men’s Shed Pomona has finally found a place to call home.

The shed is behind 29, School Street, Pomona and was formerly a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Ranger’s Shed which has recently been used for machinery

We already have a writer’s group, photography group, astronomy group and community orchestra. For not -for- profit groups we usually ask everyone for a $3 donation which includes tea and coffee.

Cooran Acoustic Night

Showcasing local and visiting talent for 26 years this is an event not to be missed! On Saturday, 22 November from 7pm in the beautiful Cooran Hall this intimate night is an opportunity for casual, emerging and established artists and musicians to share their songs and skills with an audience that really listens.

As musically diverse as it gets, the evening boasts a delicious cafe and serves up a spontaneous line up of performers for an affordable $4.

Meet the new Committee at Pomona Meals On Wheels A new management committee was elected at the recent Pomona Meals on Wheels Annual General Meeting. The new committee comprises: President: Stephen Hilditch; Vice President: Di Donaldson; Secretary: Lyn McAndrew; Treasurer: Irene Gibbs; and committee members, Beany Palmer; Bruce Bryan; Sally Etheridge; Mark Counter.

In his second year as President, Stephen Hilditch reports that this invaluable service of Meals on Wheels still has the capacity to help more people. “The service is not just for the aged, but anyone who may find themselves temporarily or long term infirmed after an accident or illness” says Stephen.

Volunteers for this excellent local service are, however, still in short supply especially those with good computer and administration skills. A commitment to a couple of hours a week is all it takes to give back to the

This year will be the 25th anniversary of the operation in the new facility at the Pomona Community Hall although the service has been running a lot longer

than 25 years. It is a testimony to the support and encouragement that Meals on Wheels has received from the community and the Noosa Council that it has been going so long.

Pomona Meals on Wheels service extends to and covers Eumundi, East & West Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Boreen Point.

Cooking Classes at the Shed Following on from two successful series of cooking classes, chef, Sean Bowman in conjunction with Pomona Community House, will be offering one last lesson between now and Christmas in the beautiful Lawson Shed kitchen.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT Pets give us company, affection and love. But with ownership comes responsibility; to care and nurture them and to minimise their impact on the environment.

Noosa River's health has remained relatively stable during the past year despite experiencing the lowest annual rainfall since Healthy Waterways monitoring began in 2001.

It is always distressing to see dog faeces on footpaths and in our parks because of negligent pet owners.

The Noosa Council has responded to requests from dog owners to provide Doggy Doo bags and have placed dispensing containers in appropriate locations, near the public toilets in Stan Topper Park, in two locations at the entrances from Hill Street and Mill Street in the big Cooroora Park and also at Songbird estate.

No place for complacency on Noosa River

Noosa Mayor, Noel Playford, says that while this year's Ecosystem Health Report Card score was not surprising taking into account low rainfall, there was no room for complacency.

"We can always do better when it comes to caring for the River. Addressing river bank erosion and improving riparian vegetation are important issues, as is ensuring effluent from vessels is responsibly managed and not allowed to enter the waterway," Mayor Playford said.

Noosa River's scores have typically fluctuated between A and B grades from year to year, with this year's freshwater quality dropping only slightly, influenced by low rainfall in a trend reflected across South East Queensland waterways.

While Noosa's estuary score dropped slightly to A-, against the trend, it was 91 per cent compliant with water quality guidelines, with only a slight decrease in dissolved oxygen at one monitoring site identified as an influencing factor.

Mayor Playford said the result was a reminder to Council to look for new ways to better manage Noosa River.

"We should never be complacent. We are fortunate that most of the freshwater flow originates in the upper reaches of the Noosa River," he said.

"The upper reaches and the catchment are in a National Park so you'd expect the quality to be good, if for no other reason.

"The health of the river is often best-managed at a local level and everybody has a part to play," Mayor Playford said.

"Council will continue to work with community groups and state agencies to ensure Noosa River is protected for future generations."
