Kin Kin residents join to celebrate the Biosphere The recurring theme of the second Noosa BioFest celebration held at Kin Kin was ‘we are one’ – one with each other and one with nature. The relaxed nature of the festival, and its depth and variety, impressed organisers, who said Kin Kin was the natural location for the celebration of the Noosa Biosphere.

“This is the upper catchment of the Noosa River and while people might focus on the water quality downstream, the fish life and the oyster beds, the most significant project the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation can fund is the Keep It In Kin Kin restoration,” said John News, principal organiser.

Like a good batch of fine liqueur, it has taken a while for the Pomona Distilling Co. to emerge, but all is set for its opening on Wednesday 11 December.

It is one of the practical means of addressing the Biosphere objectives.

Lectures, demonstrations, song, dance, alternative food, electric bikes and community group stalls rounded out the festival celebrations held at the Kin Kin Showgrounds.

There were about 40 stalls operating over the two days of the event. It brought many visitors to the town.

John said the Kin Kin School was heavily involved in the lessons of the Biosphere, endeavouring to capture young hearts towards a 2050 vision for the town and surrounds.

He especially thanked Christie Hawyard and Jasper Carol for their assistance.

MEETING RESOLUTION This meeting of citizens and ratepayers calls upon Noosa Council to halt further approvals for medium density housing at Pomona until the council consults with the people of Pomona about the nature and extent of this type of development, the selection of blocks suitable for conversion to medium density living, the scale and bulk of these developments and the architectural style of the buildings to be placed on these sites.

The consultation should include an active investigation into reversing the medium density housing zoning for these blocks and an assessment of the consequences of more dense housing at Pomona on civic infrastructure, such as the sewerage system, local roads etc.

While we welcome any consideration of affordable housing and housing types at Pomona, the council’s current zonings and location for medium density housing development have the potential to threaten the town character and lifestyle amenity.

COUNCIL RESPONDS TO REZONING Cr Brian Stockwell says the name change in the proposed new Noosa Plan from ‘semi-attached housing’ zone to ‘medium density housing’ zone is a consequence of a state government stipulation that all councils adopting new planning schemes must use common terminology. Speed restrictions for Pomona–Kin Kin Rd The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has responded to safety concerns about the Pomona–Kin Kin Road by reducing the speed limit along two sections.

Northbound from Pomona, the 90kph speed limit will be reduced to 80kph as far as the 60kph zone near Upper Pinbarren Creek Road. This section includes the Six Mile Creek single-lane bridge, where the Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton MP, wants safety improvements.

The existing 100kph speed limit will be reduced to 80kph from Williams Creek to the Kin Kin town limits, from where a 60kph speed zone applies.

HELP LOCAL FARMERS – AND YOURSELF Cooran’s reputation as a foodies’ paradise is growing. The latest development involves the Cooran Food Collective, which aims to connect local people to local food, and the idea has taken off. It is a new buyers’ group started by Alison Dillon and other volunteers.

Via a downloadable app, people can view what local produce is in season and available for order. They simply place their order online and then collect their fresh produce – all from local farmers and producers. Butter Factory Friends hold first art awards

This year’s Eclectica exhibition from the Butter Factory Arts Centre Butter Factory Friends (BFFs) will have the whole gallery overflowing with amazing art.

Bike path debacle Noosa Council has ranked a proposed bicycle path on railway land between Cooran and Pomona as a ‘low priority’ even before its begins work on developing a Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy 2020–40 to determine which bicycle paths will be eligible for shared construction funding with the State Government.

The project is shown on the Queensland Principal Bicycle Network map as having Category B status – meaning it is notionally listed for construction in 10-15 years time, but Infrastructure Planning Design and Delivery Manager with Noosa Council, Mr Craig Eldridge, says even this ranking level is in jeopardy.

“An assessment of the criteria for the connection between Cooran and Pomona is likely to result in a score in the lower range for the State Government Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program and is at risk of not receiving funding,” Mr Eldridge said in a letter to Cooran Earth Rights representatives.

“As a result, the project is not a high priority and, therefore, will be incorporated into future works programs as a medium priority, for consideration in future grants applications.” This would place a Cooran–Pomona bicycle path outside the 10-year timeframe for likely works.

Plenty of talent and colour at Cooran State School If a picture paints a thousand words, then there are millions of reasons to celebrate some of the recent efforts of the students at Cooran State School.

With the 2019 school year about to wind down, the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank put together a colouring-in competition for all year levels at the school. Lots of entries were received and the winners received their prizes at an assembly last week.

honour National Trust lifetime achievement award Tourism Habitat Noosa – a National Trust Queensland has announced a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Jeanette Alfredson for her work as president of the Cooroora Historical Society and for preserving and promoting the history of the shire. The special honour was revealed at the 2019 Heritage Awards held in Brisbane recently.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the training was integral to promoting community confidence in the sector.

Environmental grants Noosa Council’s Multi-year Environment Collaborative (MEC) Grants Program is open to not-for-profit community organisations willing to join other community stakeholders, working together towards a common goal. The goals must align with the Noosa Environment Strategy.

Noosa Council Environmental Services Manager, Craig Doolan, said $250,000 was available for projects in the 2019–20 financial year.

“Groups interested in applying should have a look at the Noosa Environment Strategy and then discuss their project with a member of the environment team,” he said.

Applications for this round of funding close Wednesday, December 18. The MEC Grants Program is funded from the Environment Levy.

Two halls to be upgraded Two rural community halls will receive welcome improvements after Noosa Council voted to fund repairs.

Under a joint funding arrangement with the Federal Hall Committee, $6944 will be spent replacing locks and some doors, new security screens and door jams.

At Ridgewood, the bar area of the local hall will be expanded to encompass a secure storage area for hall furniture. A table storage area will be built under the stage. The council is contributing $3272, conditional on the designs being approved by the Heritage Coordinator.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.

Tourism consultant lodges first draft of trail network master plan Consultants TRC Tourism has delivered an initial draft of its Noosa Trail Network Master Plan to Tourism Noosa for discussion with other stakeholders, Noosa Landcare and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation.

The study, which cost $20,000, will be made public in the new year.

Writing on the TRC website, consultant Chris Ord revealed he

had ridden a bike the entire 100km network to explore possibilities for improving the trails and the experience for users.

He nominated the trails linking Pomona and Cooran, with views to Mt Cooroora, as being among his favourite experiences.

“As we often find on these kinds of assignments, there is so much opportunity to leverage some

stunning landscapes via trail development and curation,” he said.

‘It’s just a matter of identification and prioritisation – figuring out what to keep, what to rationalise, where to develop new product, how it all links and how that could all be funded and maintained.”

The Noosa Trails Strategy will guide the direction of trail development, experiences and sustainability over the coming 5-10 years.

NEWS BRIEFS FREE XMAS BUSES A free Park-and-Ride Loop Bus will hit the road this festive season as part of Noosa Council’s Christmas Go Noosa transport campaign.

It’s in addition to the popular free holiday buses, which again return from 14 December to 27 January. The 632 hinterland route servicing Cooroy, Pomona and Cooran is among the free services.

The Loop Bus service will depart the Noosa Heads bus terminal every 15 minutes in a clockwise loop along Noosa Drive, Weyba Road, and Noosa Parade.

Community will be consulted about budget Noosa Council will undertake a trial formal public consultation process before finalising its 2020–21 budget.

The concept was moved by the Mayor, Cr Tony Wellington, at the November general meeting and passed on a vote of councillors.

Cr Wellington said recent events leading to dismissals of councils in South-East Queensland had created a climate of eroded public trust in councils generally and demands for increased public service transparency.

Those organisations may in turn choose to make representation to Council in support of specific budget-related issues.”

In addition, all relevant documents associated with the budget deliberations would be made available through the Your Say Noosa portal on the council website.

“While the Community Representative Budget Reference Group process may provide the more informed response to budget issues, the on-line process will allow all residents to have their say, particularly with regard to individual projects and priorities,” he said.
