Back to school for our talented class of 2020 Children have returned to school for another year and everyone can be proud of the academic standards of the district’s educational institutions. One school in particular, Kin Kin State School, performed strongly last year and is set to do so again. “This school strikes a wonderful balance between academic achievement, environmental awareness, community spirit and the importance of just being a good person,” is typical of the posts on its Facebook page.

Kin Kin has a strong commitment to being a sustainable ‘Earth Smart School’ that values its strong links to the local community.

It is a beneficiary of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, which supports food education in schools. The vision is for every Australian child to form positive food habits for life. The faces of Kin Kin students (pictured) say it all.

Noosa Landcare trains another crop of green thumbs Another crop of eco-warriors has been trained by Noosa and District Landcare in conjunction with the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program. The trainees developed core skills, contributed to team building, established a work routine, and learned a range of skills through on-the-job tasks.

They have gained nationally-accredited qualifications at a Certificate 1 or Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management or Business.

These skills can be applied immediately with a new employer. A new batch of trainees started at Noosa Landcare on 13 January.

Its interior has been altered to create a ‘friendly club style’, with Mr Barnes not ruling out additional moves to increase patronage. While one block of land is for sale, Club Pomona owns additional land fronting Station St, between the medical practice and the former Masonic Lodge.

Mr Barnes emphasised that Club Pomona was the only fully-functional bowls club between Nambour and Gympie.

A ‘Gem’ of a slow food restaurant with a ‘Zen’ feel will emerge soon from the beautiful venue formerly known to locals as Noosa Namaste Restaurant, with the new business partners behind Pomona Village Kitchen offering an array of wholesome family meals and a specialised burger and village bar menu.

Zenita and Gemma have been scoping what they could do with the prime space in Memorial Avenue during the past year. “We will be providing healthy whole-food dishes inspired from all four corners of the globe,” Zenita said.

The pair plans to throw open the doors of the new establishment in a few weeks time after extensive renovations to enlarge the kitchen and install a bar.

Zenita Wilson (Zen) and Gemma Parry-Jones (Gem) are behind the concept that honours Pomona’s position as the birthplace of the slow food movement in Noosa Shire. Slow Food is a global, grassroots organisation with supporters linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment.

The girls are no strangers to the food scene. Zenita owned and operated the bistro at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi 13 years ago and managed multiple food and beverage venues from the winelands of New Zealand to the hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast.

The pool is used by schoolchildren exclusively. Although several people have requested the tender information pack from Pomona State School to operate the facility outside school hours, the interest has gone no further, a spokesperson said. Troubadour brings musical magic to The Majestic Rhythmic storyteller and multi-instrumentalist, Rory McLeod, has a saying: “A week spent around a campfire will tell you more about a person than a decade spent next door to them.” He brings his tradition of a travelling minstrel, or troubadour, to The Majestic Theatre, Pomona, on Sunday 9 February.

Page Furnishers celebrates 100 years in business So intricate is Pages Furniture Factory’s association with Pomona and its fortunes that the name of the road running past its premises was changed from ‘Cooran Road’ to Factory Street and for many years the sirens and whistles marking smoko, meal breaks and knock-off time acted as a defacto town clock.

2020 VISION FOR THE HINTERLAND What’s our vision for the next decade?

Pomona is the ‘capital town’ of the Northern Hinterland and service centre for about 8000 residents of surrounding villages and communities. Through stories in this issue, Cooroora Connect looks at the changes shaping our town and district.

In seeking descriptions for Pomona and district in 2020 and the decade beyond, it’s hard to pass up quoting Darryl Kerrigan, the central character of the iconic Australian movie The Castle. The Northern Hinterland is about ‘the vibe’, feeling the serenity and a trophy lifestyle worthy of going straight to the pool room. We might not have Darryl’s beloved Bonnie Doon down the road, but Lake Cootharaba is the next best thing.

As for undesirable government engineering of our towns, we’re with Darryl too – telling them they’re dreaming. And when it comes to real estate sales, the buzz is Location! Location! Location!

Industries that reflect our environmental credentials are evolving. No tourist theme parks here, thanks – we have a world-class natural space to explore. We are conscious of food miles and the need to support local primary producers. An ‘eats street’ vibe has been created with the opening of the Pomona Distilling Co, and more to come.

There is much to celebrate. Overwhelmingly, residents want 2020 to be a happy and prosperous New Year. May it be so.

Noosa Council predicts a bright future The 2020–21 Council budget will be an important contributor to achieving the economic vision of increased diversity across Noosa Shire, including the hinterland.

The Local Economic Development Plan (LEDP) outlines the vision and plans for the Noosa Shire.

A core principle of the plan is diversification. A Rural and Food Sector profile was

published in 2018, titled A Taste for Noosa.

It is listed as a priority and multiple activities have been completed or are under way.

Country Noosa, Slow Food Noosa and the Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) continue to be very active and work collaboratively with Noosa Council teams. Tourism Noosa has continued to

expand the Noosa Country Drive product and work is continuing on the Noosa Trail Network.

The proposed new Noosa Plan includes a number of changes that support and enable increased opportunities for naturebased tourism activity and accommodation. Pomona and the Northern Hinterland are included as part of the listed activities

and planning changes.

The new planning scheme also introduces a placebased approach for Local Plan Areas, including hinterland villages such as Pomona. The council budget includes funding to develop and commence the place-based process in early 2020.

The strategic framework states: “A place-based approach to planning is intended to protect and preserve these unique, distinct and vibrant local areas.

“While the community of Noosa Shire shares many values and priorities, the on-the-ground approach to land use planning, infrastructure provision, urban design, community and economic development differs from place to place.”

Noosa Council will work with local areas and towns over the coming years to tackle this more localised planning approach.

The LEDP and new planning scheme provisions are already contributing to a more sustainable, connected and active hinterland. The LEDP and associated 68 actions will be reviewed, beginning in 2020 – providing an opportunity for considered input and comment.

2020 VISION – A new plan for a new beginning

Council responds to Town Plan submissions Its ratification subject to state government approval, Noosa Council has passed the new Town Plan, but did so after considering a significant number of submissions from individual ratepayers and groups. Here are the results of council deliberations around several proposals put forward by ratepayers at Pomona.

Development of a path network Noosa Council has deferred any further consideration of expanding and connecting cycleways and walkways at Pomona, although it acknowledges there are gaps in the network, some sections are a health hazard and there is a need for more consultation with the Department of

A possible retirement village The council said it had analysed requirements for a retirement village or aged care facility at Pomona and “was not able to find large parcels of land within the urban boundary obviously suitable for that purpose.”

In developing the new Town Plan, the council rejected a submission that land located at 96, 100 and 104 Station Street be zoned Community Facilities rather than Rural and Rural Residential in order to facilitate residential care and retirement facility uses in the future.

by Danae Barnes In less than two months, the Noosa Eco Retreat on the outskirts of Pomona finally will open its metaphorical ‘green’ doors to visitors. It has been a project fuelled by heart, with plenty of moments where the agony of construction has only been made bearable by the glimpses of beauty in what has been created.

Noosa Eco Retreat is the culmination of a three-year dream to build a new life for our family in the magnificent Noosa Hinterland. From the outset, the focus has been on creating something befitting the wonderful town of Pomona – especially important given the establishment of several exciting new enterprises alongside those continuing to flourish during the past two years.

Our retreat will open with six contemporary, self-contained accommodation yurts – 50sq m aluminium and bamboo-framed roundhouses with four-metre high ceilings, packed with rustic fittings and luxurious features sustainably sourced from the surrounding land.

2020 VISION – Good prospects for real estate

Real estate sales market buoyant, with prospects good for New Year An increasing number of prospective home owners wanting to move to Noosa and buy at affordable prices had placed renewed focus on the property market around Pomona, Cooran and rural parts of the shire, according to Michael Robinson, the principal of Raine and Horne Noosa Hinterland.

The available housing stock for sale remains tight, with a largely retiree resident group holding onto homes once they moved here. “There is some movement among people wanting to downsize and shift to town,” Mr Robinson said. “We are seeing the lowest housing stock numbers for some time.” A house in town now cost upwards of $500,000, he said.

“There are a lot of qualified buyers wanting to get in, but can’t [at their pricepoint].”

The median price for a home sold in the Pomona township during the September quarter of 2019 was $500,000, according to figures compiled by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), and was $630,000 for acreage properties outside town. At Cooran the respective figures were $410,000

2020 VISION – Encouraging nature-based tourism

Plan for Pomona to be trail ‘hub’ Tracks and Trails tourism is a growing market within the Australian tourism sector, aligning well with the naturebased tourism segment. The environmentally friendly nature of tracks and trails tourism means it is a relatively ecologically sustainable product.

Pomona’s role as a ‘pit stop’ for hikers, horse riders and cyclists tackling the eight walking trails that intersect at the town will be enhanced under a Noosa Trail Network Master Plan prepared by nature-based tourism consultants TRC Tourism.

The master plan covers diverse tracks within the Noosa Biosphere reserve – including through national park, state forest, private property, council parks and road reserves – and aims to eliminate and prevent misuse of this important vital asset while maintaining sustainable use of the 100km of trails.

2020 VISION – Town’s retail centre gets makeover

Gin distillery for Pomona only the beginning As a budding industrial chemist at age 18, Robin Yates used to sit at the back of the class brewing alcoholic concoctions, irrespective of the lesson being taught, and obtaining study notes from fellow students in exchange for setting up their laboratory equipment.

Now semi-retired, a lifetime ambition has been realised with the opening of Pomona’s newest tourist attraction – the Pomona Distilling Company – in the town’s historic bakery building. It is one of three substantial makeovers of buildings in the town recently, in a sign that Pomona’s history and natural setting can combine to present friendly tourism offerings for visitors. (See story this issue about the Noosa Trail Network Master Plan.)

All have been renovated, showing renewed confidence by private investors in the future of the town. The former Noosa Namaste restaurant has been converted into an exciting new eatery. The fit-out of the historic former Sunshine Cafe is nearing completion. 2020 VISION – Re-energising rural enterprise

Prospectus will supercharge our rural revival Across Noosa’s predominantly periurban hinterland, there has been a shift in agribusiness away from traditional industrial farming to smaller lot and lifestyle farms.

Newcomers to the sector take a more environmentally sustainable and low -scale approach to farming and food production.

Consequently, the hinterland is home to a growing and eclectic mix of artisan producers and gourmet food outlets. Local agribusiness is becoming more entrepreneurial, extending market opportunities through a value-added approach and linkages to sectors such as retail, tourism and health and well-being.

To guide these developments, Country Noosa is delivering a new Rural Enterprise Program (REP) together with partners from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), Noosa Council and Noosa and District Landcare. The overall aim is to foster a range of environmentally and economically sustainable farming and other rural enterprises in a positive Noosa Hinterland social environment, integrated with Noosa Biosphere Reserve principles.

Art gallery to splt from Majestic Theatre management

by Suellyne Lott The Majestic Theatre and Pomona Railway Station Gallery have been under the umbrella of Pomona Arts Inc. for around 20 years. It has been agreed that the two venues should split into separate non-profit organisations, each independent of the other.

This separation will benefit both entities in that the management teams will be more autonomous and able to concentrate on their own venues. For the gallery, a greater degree of independence will give it the ability to apply for grants on its own behalf, as well as there being tax and compliance benefits. An application for incorporation is in

process and will be listed as Hinterland Art Group Inc, while trading under the name of Pomona Railway Station Gallery. A new tenancy agreement with the Noosa Council will need to be approved, and should not be a problem.

All three have been involved in the management of the gallery currently and in the past, Wendy having managed the gallery for more than nine years.

Companions ready to help Snakes alive in Reserve St with care of your pets The Pets for Life program has been operating across the Sunshine Coast for 11 years. It's a communitybased program that involves local volunteers supporting local pet owners to maintain their companion animals in their lives.

The spell of recent hot weather has brought out the snakes, including this Eastern Brown, which had enough sense to cross Reserve Street via the pedestrian crossing.

I trust you all had a wonderful time over the festive season and are looking forward to a productive and positive 2020.

In saying that, it has been hard to lose some of our much-loved locals during this time including ‘Maz’ Maureen Piggott, and Joanie Boyce. Both beautiful souls who had a wonderful impact on us and our community, and will be sadly missed, though their legacies live on within us.

Over the Christmas break many have relayed their feelings of disempowerment, despondency and frustration due to bushfires currently burning across our country.

Last year, I outlined in a Parliamentary speech the importance of taking action to empower communities after these catastrophic events, and in preparing for the first sitting of Parliament, I have been revisiting this, as well as the concerns raised surrounding consultation and engagement. It is a question that, as an MP, is

Help at hand for those running low on water For hinterland residents running low on water during the current drought conditions, supplies up to 1000 litres may be accessed from several taps across the shire.

Noosa Council states it’s preferable that only the following taps are used to fill domestic-size water containers:  Lake Cooroibah foreshore park, end of Lakeway Dr, Cooroibah. The tap is at the boat ramp, behind the post and rail fence.  Kookaburra Park, Lake Macdonald Dr, Cooroy. The tap is near the toilet block.  Cooroora Mountain Park, Mountain St, Pomona, tap near the rotunda.

Other public taps are not suitable for a variety of reasons, including maintenance of water pressure.

Hot showers are available at the following locations: Pomona Community House, 1 Memorial Ave, Pomona: 9am–4pm Mon.–Fri., other times by appointment.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

Roll on 2020 Is it just me or did you feel like we didn’t pause for breath before 2020 arrived? Until recently, New Year’s Day used to feel like opening a big door on a new world. This year it feels like we jumped a low fence and kept running through the same paddock.

From 1 February 2020, the penalty for illegal mobile phone use while driving will increase from a $400 fine (three penalty units) and three demerit points to a $1000 fine (4 penalty units) and four demerit points. The $1000 fine will also apply to bicycle riders who illegally use a mobile phone while riding, but no demerit points will be issued. Double demerit points will still apply for a second or subsequent mobile phone offence committed within 12 months.

So potentially, from 1 February, two instances of inattention and poor judgement by using a phone while driving or riding could result in a couple of grand and potentially a complete loss of licence. I submit that any cyclist texting selfies while riding in traffic risks a lot more than a fine! Most thinking people are generally as fed up as we are regularly seeing erratic driving behaviour as drivers pinball around the lanes texting and engaged in animated conversations that just couldn’t wait. It’s surprising it still happens so often, as most basic cars built since 2010 have the tech to sync your phone to your car radio. If you’re not sure, here are the rules re hands-free operation in Queensland - and don’t say we didn’t warn you!

In Queensland, full licence and P2 licence holders can only use their phone to make or answer a call or listen to music using hands-free operation, such as Bluetooth, a headset or earpiece, or with their phone in a cradle affixed to the car.
