In this year's Pomona King of the Mountain Festival and Race, watch all the action live on the big screen as athletes from around the globe take on the most gruelling and historic Mountain Race in the Country in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge at 3pm.

Will Neil Labinsky make this his 5th consecutive win with a record time of less than 24 minutes?

Organiser Terie Wakeham said, “This year’s event has some new and exciting components – for the first time in the history of the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge you can witness live footage of the race on the big screen in the park. We have also added a new race to the festival – the 2.8km Zinc Mountain Dash for the young and young at heart with a dash to the mountain and back. This is one of the most exciting years for the festival with heaps of activities for young and old alike, we look forward to seeing everyone on the day.”

The 32nd Pomona King of the Mountain Festival kicks off at 7am with the comic outrageous bush poet Shirley Friend and her ratbag mates in the IGA Bush Poets Breakfast. Last year saw grandparents to grandkids take part in the Cooroy Rag 3km Fun Run, so get dressed up for this family fun run starting at 8.30am or sit back and watch as over 400 school kids compete in the Nestle School Relays starting at 10am.

A new challenge will be set in this year’s new and exciting race the 2.8km Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash starting at 1pm.

This year the focus is „Families Working Together‟.

As well as needing to create a tasty, family friendly, nutritious dish, three families will also be asked to demonstrate their ability to work as a team.

“Collaboration, communication and having fun are an important part of this year‟s judging criteria,” says Kathryn Shewring, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Community House. “We want to demonstrate that each family member has an important contribution to make to the team.”

The cook-off will be a part of a series of programs aimed at supporting families. This will include an opportunity to participate in meaningful conversations about modern families. In the month of August, FOCUS HEALTH, Social Worker, Aimee Stanyer will be taking time out to discuss issues pertinent to modern families.

Simone Pope is choreographer & principal soloist with Australia’s only national Flamenco company Flamenco Fire, performing regularly at QPAC, Woodford Folk Festival & in extensive tours around Australia.

Tune your feet, arms and body into the beat of Flamenco rhythm and music. Come along, stamp your feet and shout “Ole!” as you explore traditional Flamenco moves with Simone.

We will work through clapping techniques, feet progression, and body movements towards dancing a gypsy Rumba. This workshop is geared towards beginners (no experience is necessary).

What to wear: Ladies - this is not Tango or Salsa, so don’t wear high heels! A closed toe shoe with a solid heel is ideal (court shoe, boot or lady jane). If you don’t have a full skirt to wear, then comfortable pants are fine. Gentlemen, no high heels either, but a heeled shoe or boot would be perfect!

Allan Bonsell, whose house is located along one of the routes to be taken by the quarry trucks, said he was very concerned about the lack of transparency and community consultation that had allowed an original approval for a small scale quarry to be relied upon for the extraction of one million tonnes of rock every year. He and the Kin Kin Community Group want the scaled-up quarry operations to trigger a material change of use revision by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Bonsell urged people to voice their concern to local and state politicians. Protest organisers noted the absence of Mayor Abbot and Cr Brennan. “If we allow this mega-quarry and don‟t find a way to get our politicians to listen to what we are saying, we are effectively trashing the economic base of this area,” Mr Bonsell said.

Public scrutiny of the Neilsen‟s site already has resulted in a curtailment of operations, including a show cause notice issued by the council to force compliance with requirements of the approved plan. The Dept of Environment & Resource Management also found cause to suspend quarry activities while the company met directives to contain contaminated run -off into Wahpunga Creek. Signs on display at the June protest meeting highlighted the fact that 34 per cent of water in the Noosa River through the Noosa Biosphere comes from the Kin Kin catchment.

Neilsen‟s Quality Gravels has yet to start extraction from the 60ha Sheppersens Lane property. It must meet various operational standards before quarrying can start.

Meanwhile, the Dept of Transport & Main Roads continues to monitor likely impacts of quarry truck operations along the Pomona–Kin Kin Road, which remains a major issue for quarry opponents.

Call for better rail services to hinterland The enthusiastic reception locals gave the new return daytime train service to Gympie North from Brisbane on 6 June has been followed by calls for the state government to advance planning for track duplication of the Sunshine Coast and North Coast lines.

Rail Back On Track, a passenger rail advocacy group, says the single track line north of Beerburrum, supplemented by passing loops where trains can pass each other at stations, acts as a bottleneck that restricts passenger and freight train efficiency while affecting reliability of services.

Cooran and Pomona are often the location of these train passing manoeuvres, with trains having to stop while another passes in the opposite direction.

The convenor of Rail Back On Track, Mr Robert Dow, responded warmly to the community‟s genuine support for the new service. “Many people came out to welcome the new service with signs, and were supported by their families,” Mr Dow said. “This additional service will provide an important communication link and travel option for local citizens as well as being of considerable benefit to the tourist sector. More services are needed between Gympie North and Nambour particularly, but this is a welcome beginning,” he said.

Mr Dow urged government to provide more inter-urban rail services across South-East Queensland, linked to coordinated bus timetables, such as the 632 service linking Cooroy, Pomona and Cooran with Noosa Heads

The history of how the Pomona Sewing Goddesses came to be…. By Annette Mole Its about 14 years ago when I was in my Haberdashery shop, the Australian Sewing Guild was formed, along the lines of the American Sewing Guild. I joined immediately, as I believed it was a great idea to share skills and keep the craft alive.

I formed the Tewantin Sewing Guild Neighbourhood Group the following year with the help of Caroline Lorking and Mary Smith, two keen sewers and by recruiting several of my customers who were also passionate sewers.

Three years ago I started the Pomona Sewing Guild Neighbourhood Group, and as all groups are encouraged to have a name and after a great deal of consideration we settled on The Pomona Sewing Goddesses, because Pomona was the Goddess of Fruit.

As in all things prices increase and the National Sewing Guild had increased their annual membership to $50 our members decided it was too expensive and we did not get value for the money. They asked “why can’t we just be a community sewing group?” The only problem was the insurance. As we meet in the Lions Den and two of us are members of the Lions Club, I approached the President to see if it would be possible for our group to run under their banner and be covered by their insurance.

Our group is now under the auspice of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club and we currently make “Care Quilts” for disaster victims. We have completed 13 quilts and they will be dispersed by the Lions Club to help those in need.

So we are the Pomona Sewing Goddesses and we meet once a month on the third Saturday of the month.

We do have a membership fee of $30 per year and this will be used to do the charity sewing. We pay $20 each to donate to the Lions Club for use of the facilities and we contribute $2 per day for tea, coffee etc.
