CELEBRATE SENIORS WEEK 2012 IN POMONA August 18th – 26th In conjunction with Dept. of Communities and Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the Pomona & District Community House invites you to join in the following activities: ‘ALWAYS A GODDESS’ ART WORKSHOP Saturday 18th August, 10.00am – 3.00pm.

Using mixed media including old photos, collage & paint come and create a beautiful art piece that celebrates being a woman. Facilitated by local artist Leigh Hooker. All materials and morning tea included. Bring a lunch to share.

Dance Like a Butterfly Performed for Seniors – 23 August 2012 In celebration of Senior’s Week, Suncoast Community Legal Service and Pomona and District Community House are presenting a free play at the Majestic Theatre Pomona 9.45am – 12.30pm on Thursday 23 August.

The event will feature a free morning tea, performance and discussion by the Seniors Legal and Support Service. All residents throughout the region are welcome to attend.

“Dance Like a Butterfly” is a one woman play by playwright Aviva Ravel. The play depicts Tillie, a spirited 85 year old woman. We meet Tillie as she is about to be discharged from hospital. It is a moment fraught with uncertainty as Tillie reluctantly realizes she will not be able to live the remaining years of her life entirely on her own terms. Through her journey this strong-minded woman brings us face to face with the realization that ultimately our future happiness is determined by our own attitude to change. Accomplished actress Una Way will perform the play.

Sarah Blasko returns to Australia in August to perform three shows only!

After releasing her platinum accredited and highly acclaimed third album As Day Follows Night in 2009, Sarah embarked upon tireless international touring throughout 2010.

Seeker Lover Keeper kept Sarah busy for much of the

following year. The much-loved collaboration with her friends Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann culminated in the national Heavenly Sounds tour of churches and cathedrals in December.

This year, Sarah has been recording in Stockholm, Sweden and Sofia, Bulgaria with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra.

The new album is due for release later this year.

Sarah Blasko will perform at the opening of the Cairns Festival as well as returning to one of her favourite regional venues, Lismore’s Star Court Theatre, She will also make her debut at Pomona’s charming Majestic Theatre in southern Queensland.

Community House Goes Green The House was recently awarded a Qld Government Gambling Community Benefit Grant to install solar power and skylights to both the Old House and the new Lawson Shed.

The solar system will reduce PCH’s electricity bill significantly and with natural light via the new skylights will greatly reduce our carbon footprint.

Excess electricity generated will be sold back to the grid so we have a fabulous win/win situation.

In addition to the funding for the above we will also be building a roof over the patio on the Lawson Shed, a window awning over the kitchen window plus finishing the fit out of the kitchen.

Construction of the roof over the patio will be carried out by the blokes from Men’s Shed Pomona as their first Community project.

We gratefully acknowledge the State Governments program where a percentage of proceeds from gambling are given back to organisations like ours to improve their facilities.All money saved from reduced electricity costs will be put to better use by funding more of our Community programs.

At the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club’s annual Changeover Dinner, Barry Stewart was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

This award, which was created in 1973, takes its name from the founder of Lions Clubs International (LCI), Melvin Jones, and was established as Lions highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual's dedication to humanitarian service.

Barry has been a member of the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club for 39 years and is the only member of the club to be awarded this recognition for many years which is indicative of the high regard in which he is held by club members past and present.

Con Bleyerveld, another long serving member of the club was presented with the James Richardson Award. This award is an Australian Lions Award and is presented to Lions who have made a considerable contribution to Lions and to their communities. Con has been an outstanding member of the club and is one of those members who demonstrate what being a Lion is all about.

The dinner was attended by many past and present members who were able to congratulate Barry and Con for their outstanding service.

Pomona Pacers The rain, the cold weather and injuries have resulted in a reduction in our number of walkers but the hardiest still keep going. Welcome to new members, Lyn and Graeme.

We meet in front of the Pomona Community House on weekday mornings at 7.00 am, and quickly warm up once we start walking. The main reason for doing it is, of course, for our health. The high incidence of heart disease in women as well as men is alarming.

It is so much easier to exercise when you have a group of people to do it with. Even though there is no commitment to walk every day, most of us come along as often as we can.

Our monthly Moon Walk at Noosaville begins with a light meal (optional) followed by a walk along the Noosa River in the moonlight. Partners, family and friends are most welcome. We have had fewer numbers for the last two Moon Walks but in both cases, the food was excellent and the company scintillating.

The date for the next Moon Walk is Tuesday July 31.

One of our members reckons we arranged it for his birthday which is on the day before. The Moon Walk after that is on Tuesday 28 August.

What the Census shows. . .

Pomona's population has been increasing by about 100 a year in the past five years, according to the results of the 2011 Census, and we've aged a bit too.

The Census showed the population of the town and the surrounding 50.1 sq km was 2587 on census night, up from 2010 in 2006. Females still outnumber males by a small margin – 1306 to 1281- and the median age is up three years at 44. We're 80 per cent Australian-born.

We’re not, apparently, overly religious, with 868 people, 34% of Pomonans stating they had no religion (30 per cent previously). The Anglicans lead in the interdenominational stakes, ahead of the Catholics 502 to 431. Of those stating a religious affiliation, the 35 Buddhists are the largest group of non-Christians.

The median individual Pomonan income has risen 23 per cent to $488 a week, up from $398 five years ago, Median household income stands 33 per cent higher at $979, up from $734 in 2006 but a long way below the national average of $1234.

The number of private dwellings in the town is up from 860 to 1093 of which 441 are subject to a mortgage.

Not surprisingly the median monthly mortgage repayment is up too - $1733 in the latest data, compared with $1100 in 2006 and $1800 nationally.

The median weekly rent is up 50 per cent to $300, slightly above the national average of $285.

And there are now 2.6 persons in the average Pomonan household (up from 2.5) still sleeping 1.1 to a bedroom.

Free go-cards for public transport seminar participants…..

In support of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Strategic Transport Strategy, the Pomona & District Community House will conduct two public seminars and give away free cashed up go-cards in a bid to boost the use of public transport across the Noosa Hinterland.

The Pomona public transport seminar will be held at the Lawson Shed at 10 am on Thursday 30 August, while the Cooroy seminar will take place at the Cooroy Library at 10am on 6 September. A free morning tea will be provided at each meeting, which will last about an hour.

8 T olive oil

2 medium zucchinis

1 T butter

100g green beans

3 brown onions

150-200g cabbage

4 carrots

1.5 litres stock

2 sticks celery

1 parmesan crust

250g potatoes

175g canned tomatoes

400g canned cannellini beans

40g freshly grated parmesan cheese

Method Thinly slice the onions Dice the carrots, celery, peeled potatoes, zucchini & beans.

Shred the cabbage.

Put oil and butter in a large stockpot and add the onion until pale gold. Do not brown…

Add carrots, celery & potatoes. Cook for 5-6 mins Add drained cannellini beans, zucchini & green beans. Cook for 4-5 mins Add the cabbage. Cook for another 5 mins.

Add the stock, parmesan cheese crust & tomatoes Cover the pot and cook slowly for up to 3hours.

Add water if you think it is becoming too thick Just before serving remove the parmesan crust and stir in the grated parmesan cheese.

2014 will be the centenary year of Australia’s first deployment of soldiers to Europe to fight in the First World War. The purpose of the Adopt a Digger Project is to commemorate that centenary by honouring the men and women from the (current) Sunshine Coast region of South-east Queensland who fought in World War One. The aim of this website is to create a database which records each soldier’s WW1 military history and a brief personal history. This database will be a valuable source of reference for historians, researchers, descendants and school students, and will be a significant contribution to the historical military records of Australia, and particularly the Sunshine Coast region.
