Thank you Dr Ann Buchan Much admired for her dedicated professionalism and standard of care, Dr Ann Buchan – for 10 years the owner of the 5000-patient Cooroora Family Health bulk billing medical practice – left the business on 31 May.



While an important caregiver has left Cooroora Family Health (CFH), its nurses and other doctors continue to support its strong community and social focus, valued by local people.



All efforts are being made to keep CFH as a bulk-billing practice, compared with the ‘out of pocket’ gap payment operations of other doctors’ surgeries.

Pomona will be bikers’ heaven this month Pomona will be a biker’s heaven on Sunday 30 June when more than 120 motor cyclists take part in the 12th annual King of the Mountain Poker Run race, a major fundraiser for the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club.

The event attracts many more people to town to admire the workmanship and workings of the bikes themselves.

Organiser, Peter Cusack, predicts a wonderful show that gets bigger and better each year. “We are so happy with the response from riders across the coast.

CUBBYHOUSE PETITION It is set to be a David and Goliath battle, but Jack Cameron and his mates Will, Dana, Mal, Bailey and a host of supporters have taken on Noosa Council in a quest to have a cubbyhouse built in Cunningham Park in which they can play and spot the birdlife for which the park is renowned.

Noosa Council says the park, located between Pavilion Street and Summit Road, East Pomona, is ‘non -core’ and undeserving of any improvements apart from maintenance and mowing.

Jack has organised a petition signed by more than 100 people to persuade Noosa Council to change its mind.

The petition is likely to be tabled at the June general council meeting. It has

been sent to the Mayor, Cr Tony Wellington.

The petition asks that the children of Pomona be involved in the design of a cubbyhouse, which will replace a makeshift cubby.

An earlier attempt was dismantled by Noosa Council, as one wit said, “probably because it didn’t pass the building regulations”.

In a covering letter accompanying the petition to the Mayor and councillors, Jack Cameron wrote: “We love being in the outdoors and discovering nature.

Grants allow Majestic Theatre Organ restoration to focus on the next big thing to be celebrated at recital event

Following the success of the Pomona Music Festival – the ‘best little festival ever’ – the busy people behind the operation of The Majestic Theatre are making sure the grand old lady of entertainment locally and such a treasure to the Pomona scene will again throw up her skirts and continue to draw crowds throughout the remainder of the year.

After what has been a mammoth effort of painstaking hard work to restore a theatre organ to The Majestic Theatre, Pomona, the magnificent Linnett Compton Organ will sing, puff and wheeze its dulcet tones at the fingers of three musical craftsmen early next month.

Do yourselves a favour and purchase a $25 ticket ($20 concession tickets and accompanied children free) to an organ recital on Saturday 6 July, headed by world renowned organist David Bailey, our local hero Ron West, and local Chris Rose as they tickle the ivory keys and play those pedals.

Tickets will be on sale soon from The Majestic Theatre website, but expect the event to be packed with organ aficionados.

Rebuilt from scratch, involving bellows and myriad pipes of all shapes and sizes, the organ dates from 1937 when it was first installed in the ABC Theatre, Chester UK. It was disassembled and shipped to Australia in 1971 to the Oxley Brisbane home of organ aficionado, the late Blair Linnett. With no private experience, Linnett spent 10 years of devotion to restore the organ to working order. There was no instruction sheet, and the organ and its 500 pipes were spread over the floor like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Following flood damage to a Compton organ at The Majestic, the Linnett family gifted the replacement organ. Mechanical components of the Linnett Compton have been installed upstairs and back stage, safe from any future floodwaters.

Theatre organ experts John Brooks and Don Clark are very excited about what a major asset the organ will be, not only to the Majestic but to other organ enthusiasts, particularly those visiting Queensland. “We now have the Wurlitzer at GOMA, the Christie at Kelvin Grove College (which Don maintains) and, when we are finished, the Linnett Compton at The Majestic—three famous organ makes within driving distance,” John explained. “It will be very special.”

Social capital stocks high Social capital – the friendliness of communities and the extent to which people help each other – is just as important as a strong local economy, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington told a happy group of volunteers gathered at the Pomona Memorial Hall.

And Pomona and district can take a bow for its efforts, the Mayor said.

Mayor Tony Wellington (left) gave special praise to the Pomona & District Community House volunteers who received their appreciation certificates at the Volunteers Day event.

At a recent presentation by demographer Bernard Salt on the subject of unlocking the future of the Sunshine Coast, Pomona featured prominently as having the highest level of volunteerism in Noosa Shire.

About 40 people received certificates of appreciation recognising their work, including former councillor, Doug Bettens, of Mens Shed Pomona, who has volunteered for about 50 years.

An afternoon tea featured a large cake donated by Member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton MP.

The Majestic Theatre supports hinterland cultural activities with the assistance of many volunteers.

Inaugural permaculture festival to be held at Cooroy later this month The inaugural Noosa Permaculture Festival will be held at the Cooroy Community Gardens, Emerald Street on Sunday 9 June in what organisers hope will be an annual event promoting the benefits of sustainable and organic food production at home and on small holdings.

This event is a culmination of 25 years of Permaculture Noosa members meeting regularly and quietly spreading skills and knowledge among each other. A much larger audience will be targeted at the festival, which will offer fun, food and loads of information and demonstrations appealing to absolute beginners as well as longtime ‘Permies’.

Permaculture’s philosophy is to work with nature, not against it, harmoniously integrating landscape and people, providing their food, energy, shelter and other needs in a sustainable way.

President of Permaculture Noosa, Latha Matters, said she was excited by the increasing number of young families committing to growing their own food and embracing a permaculture lifestyle.

"Families are finding the permaculture principles appeal to their lifestyle and they’re seeking information from our local permaculture pioneers, such Geoff Lawton, Morag Gamble, Tom Kendall and others, who are globally recognised permaculture experts,” she said.

“The festival offers something for everyone, from learning about composting, bees, soil composition, plant propagation, so-called ‘living classrooms and much more.”

The day starts at 10am and goes until 4pm.

Informative local nurseries, garden suppliers and Permaculture Noosa volunteers will show attendees the latest permaculture techniques, and will answer any question on the practice.

Fun, interactive kids’ activities will challenge and entertain all ages.

And if that’s not enough … the appetising and inventive food trucks will create an appreciation for gourmet wholesome food unlike any you’ve tasted before.

Voices compete at Rain didn’t dampen the district festival spirits at Heritage Day The Pomona Community Choir will represent the town at the Sunshine Coast Choral Festival to be held at Venue 114, Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina on Saturday, 15 June from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

The festival is a celebration of song contested by 12 local choirs or singing groups who gather annually to showcase the enjoyment of singing in ensemble.

All are invited to come along and enjoy a ‘feel good’ afternoon of great entertainment.

The program will cover many different genres of music from classical to world music, and everything else in between.

The Noosa Shire Museum reported fewer than expected numbers at its Heritage Day activities last month, due to rain – more than made up for by the enthusiasm of those who took part in what turned out to be a wonderful and informative day.

Hey Noosa Council, where are our replacement trees?

Noosa Council was active in Pomona last month, trimming and removing trees in the car park adjacent to Pomona and District Community House. One large tree was removed and is due to be replaced under the rules of the council’s Tree Management on Public Land Policy.

The policy states that a tree will be removed or pruned only after consideration of potential risks and benefits. And it goes on to say that:

Council to test A-frame ban and other proposed signage changes Noosa Council wants to maintain the unique ‘look and feel’ of Noosa Shire by banning the A-frame signs popular with Pomona businesses wishing to advertise their services and specials.

The move follows a crackdown last year that saw the council ban ‘whimsy signs’ outside business premises that gave a chuckle to residents and visitors as they moved about the town.

Managing the proliferation of these signs represented one of the biggest challenges for staff.

“Not only do they tend to clutter footpaths and impede their use, often current limitations are ignored with multiple Aframe signs being placed in front of premises, and generally on public land,” she said.

New model proposed for Cooroora Family Health The newly-formed Cooroora Family Health Support Group is considering options for the future of the practice, including a community co-operative model. (See information panel.) This is the preferred way forward. It works in much the same way as the RACQ – a business owned by members – the objective being to maintain 100 per cent bulk billing of patients and continuation of the three-bed clinic at Pomona, with dedicated nurses operating under the direction of doctors.

Two enterprising Cooran State School students, Carter Mason (left) and George Facer-Rolfe (pictured) have produced a project nominated as one of five finalists in a statewide climate change challenge.

The pair will attend a three-day business school to enhance their entrepreneurial skill and further develop their product, which seeks to have tourists be more environmentally responsible when they visit Noosa Shire.

They have discussed their idea with Mayor Tony Wellington and they will present it to a panel of judges, before attending a showcase event with elite environmentalists including Al Gore and Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch among guests.

The boys considered their product in a coding environment, which set them apart from competitors.

The 2019 Minister’s Climate Challenge was open to all Queensland students from Year 3 to Year 10. Students taking part must identify a local climate problem and brainstorm an innovative business or social change idea.

First prize is $50,000.

Entertainers at the Cooroy Fusion Festival.

Everywhere you turned at Cooroy Fusion Festival last month, there was fun to be had.

Live music, street performers, fantastic food, children’s activities, talented artists, literary events, market stalls, wildlife shows and perfect sunny weather contributed to the creative, community atmosphere.

Pacers seek out sunshine on brisk winter walks

by Leonie Getting up to go walking is a bit harder with the darker, colder mornings. However, when those cold mornings are bright and clear, the intrepid Pomona Pacers walking group members say it is worthwhile seeing the sun climbing while striding the streets and bush paths.

It doesn’t seem like long ago since the walkers were remarking on the ruthless humidity. The choice of walking route varies with the weather. In winter, the dress may be beanies, scarves, gloves and thick socks, but one of the sunnier routes helps participants thaw out.

Rain having turned the ground to slush, a recent planned walk in the forest was abandoned in favour of a town walk, after which two members (husband and wife) invited the group to their home, where quite a crowd enjoyed the friendship and chatter over a delicious morning tea on the verandah.

Disc golf trial for Cooroora Creek Park

The proponents of a new frisbee golf-style game have confirmed that Noosa Council has given permission for a six-month trial of ‘disk golf’ involving the use of Cooroora Creek Park on a temporary basis after which the council would consider a permanent course being installed there.

The public will have a say during this time. Jamie Knight, of Federal, a representative of the Sunshine Coast Disc Golf Club said the trial using temporary equipment would be held on the first Saturday of the month from September 2019 to March 2020.

“We are looking to have the course designed professionally, the idea being to utilise the open space within the park without affecting other activities that occur there,” Jamie said.

A typical nine-station disc golf course occupies 1.2ha.

Cooroora Creek Park occupies 10ha in the centre of town.

Participants take part in warm-up drills and techniques specific to running on trails. Students aged nine to 12 who wish to compete in the 2019 Zinc Prince and Princess race, can train on a weekly basis.

Lions Recycling Project Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland.

The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
