Lifeline Pomona store turning 10 years old

by Madeline Weightman The Lifeline Pomona store will turn ten years old in March and will run a series of sales to thank the community for their ongoing support.

The store, which sells a large range of clothing, furniture, household items and books, opened in Pomona in 2008 and has been supported by the community since then who have loyally shopped and donated at the store for ten years.

Lifeline Sunshine Coast Business Manager Ian Ezzy said there would be a week-long celebration, with a number of different sales throughout the week of the 19th of March 2018.

Volunteers give arboretum a facelift A recent collaboration between the Kin Kin Community Group, Noosa Council and Noosa and District Landcare Group has seen new signage go up at the Kin Kin Arboretum, as well as individual plant species marked with their names.

Wendy Catlin goes solo and ‘feeling free’

Wendy Catlin’s first solo exhibition is being held at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. The exhibition Feeling Free to Play, Experiment and Risk opens on 17 March in the Carriage Exhibition Room.

Her paintings are the result of learning to be playful in the studio, not be afraid of mistakes, and not take the creative process too seriously.

Hinterland men’s support group A Men’s Group is being organised for the Hinterland area and will be auspiced by the Pomona Community House.

The group will meet weekly over an 8 week period from 7pm – 9pm on Monday evenings at the Lawson Shed starting Monday 9 April.

A men’s group is a safe space to be the man you are and to realise the man you can be.

What it means to be a man in today’s environment, amongst other topics.

The group will select topics that are relevant to the particular men within the group.

The Men’s group will begin on Monday 9 April and continue for eight weeks. Each man will be expected to commit to the whole eight-week program.

Fashions to the fore as Plaques preserve museum refreshes exhibits Pomona's past In keeping with its outreach philosophy of taking the museum beyond its walls, Noosa Shire Museum has collaborated with the Queensland Ambulance Service to commemorate 100 years of ambulance service to the community at Pomona. The result is another plaque (below) depicting the history of the town, as part of the Pomona History Walk. It is similar in style and content to the plaque at the Pomona Fire and Emergency Services Station next door.

A fresh approach to presenting items in the collection of the Noosa Shire Museum this year will result in a series of exhibitions featuring Noosa Shire – Through the Ages. From Saturday 3 March, the museum will be launching the next seasonal exhibition showcasing a collection of wedding dresses and formal clothing, lace gloves, bridal veils, rare and delicate textiles, photographs, 90-yearold wedding certificates and other memorabilia, all with a local connection.

“The ‘through the ages’ themed exhibitions offer a glimpse of a time gone by in the place we call home, but also represent a great opportunity for visitors to learn about the past of this beautiful region,” said Ann Sutherland, the museum Operations and Development Officer.

Posthumous award for Tony’s service

RAILWAY PATH DECISION SOON Organisers of the Don’t Divide Pomona campaign have been told that a final decision on whether the railway predestrian crossing will stay or close has been made, and the community will be notified this month.

The selfless dedication to the community by the late Tony van Boxmeer, of Pomona, was recognised recently with the posthumous awarding of a 10-year service medal by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Sunshine Coast.

The occasion was the QFES area command medal and honours presentation day held at the Maroochydore Fire and Rescue Station and attended by the top brass of QFES along with award recipients, their families and cooperating police and ambulance services.

A small local team from Pomona attended, being Fire Officer Lieutenants Ken Lavender and Paul Mardon, retired firefighter Rob Johns and community leader and representative Stephen Hilditch.

The 10-year service medal and certificate was collected on behalf of the van Boxmeer family by Lieut Ken Lavender (pictured).

A former scout leader and active member of the CooroyPomona Lions Club, Tony van Boxmeer also loaned his professional skills to Project Vietnam Inc. a voluntary group that raised money to fund their work of building schools and orphanages in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

“Tony was a helpful bloke who was always prepared to go that little bit extra to help his family and friends,” Ken said.

Tony is survived by his wife, Anne-Marie and two children, Nicole and Paul.

Compostable dog waste bags now available Compostable dog waste bags are now available from Noosa Council’s dispensers.

Noosa is one of the first Queensland councils to make the switch, and Local Laws Manager Phil Amson says the response to the new product has been positive.

“Council is pleased to lead by example with the move to compostable doggie bags. Made from vegetable fats and oils, along with corn starch, the new bags are fully compostable and simply decompose in the environment,” he said.

Councillor Joe Jurisevic says the switch to the new product will keep thousands of plastic bags out of the waste stream annually.

“Too many plastic bags end up in landfill, not to

mention parks, gardens and waterways where they can have a devastating impact, particularly on marine life.

“Even degradable plastic bags still leave plastic particles in the environment as they break down.”

New landmark for Pomona

Pomona & District Community House (PCH) received a grant from Gambling Community Benefit Fund to construct a gazebo in the bush tucker garden located next to the car park on Memorial Ave, Pomona.

The Lions Den at Pomona was packed last month for the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club annual Youth of the Year competition involving students of the Noosa District State High School.

Overall winner of the night was Rebecca Bright who also won the Joe White Bursary, presented by Barry Stewart.

Contestants were judged on a presentation involving a topic of their choosing with Kalen Anderson winning that section on the night.

For more than fifty years the Lions Youth of the Year Awards has been an integral part of the activities on Australian Lions Calendar.

It has resulted in a close association between the local Lions Club and the Noosa District State High School.

Judges this year were Rick Atkinson (Chair) representing sponsor NAB, Dr Janelle Van Kalken and Stephen Hilditch.

Judges met with the four finalist prior to the evening and interviewed them about current affairs and their interests.

This interaction, plus the speeches and answers to specific questions were taken into consideration when allocating points. The result on the night was very close. Rebecca represented the club at the Zone Final held on 3 March.

New team member

April Luchetta The Pomona & District Community House welcomes new addition to the team, April Luchetta.

April is studying for a Diploma in Community Services and Case Management and will be working with the staff and volunteers.

April’s passion for communities started when she took on management of the Gympie RSPCA some 10 years ago and found that she loved finding ways to engage the community in caring for the animals at the shelter and creating new ways for people to participate.

She says that she has been hugely impressed and inspired by the number of programs and activities that are on offer at the Community House.

“I really enjoy the energy of the Community House and I know that I will learn a lot about how neighbourhood centres run.”

Coordinator, Heather Manders says, “We’re thrilled to have April here.

She has fitted in really well with the team and has already made a great contribution to our workload.”

BELLYDANCING FOR FUN Here is an opportunity to learn a new skill, get fit and have fun through learning basic Bellydancing with instructor Belle Arnold.

Belle has been dancing and teaching for well over ten years.

Come along for a wiggle and a giggle.

Throughout March, the works of Herb Fenn and Samantha Parry will be on display.

Herb's photograph's are of images he has created with a technique he calls 'Light Morphing, reflecting light off such common materials as paper, plastic and metal.

The resulting images are lovely 'abstract paintings with light'.

Samantha's fascinating collages juxtapose a multitude of images to create new dreamlike surreal worlds .

Walking for fun and fitness through the trails Our first “Moon Walk” for the year was a twilight walk in the Noosa Botanical Gardens at Lake Macdonald, Cooroy.

The picturesque forestry, shady and virtually flat, made for comfortable walking in summertime.

Pomona Pacers is a friendly group who come together to walk in company.

Lining up for a photo beside the pond, something swam deliberately toward us – “Is it a snake??” No; we had attracted the attention of not just that one, but several turtles, who proved elusive subjects to smile for the camera – unlike Pacers!

Pomona State School leaders showing the way It’s been said that leadership is empowering young people to see themselves as changemakers. Even at a young age, it’s important to recognise this in our future leaders.

Keen to share their select few with our community, Pomona State School has unveiled its leadership group for 2018. It’s a fine array of Year 6 students who are already putting their best efforts forward at the historic school.

A bridge too far?

As of February 2018 I‘ve been your Pomona Plod for just over 15 years, granted, not yet a local, but close enough to know many of your stories and see some naughty kids grow into fine young adults and.. some adults turn into naughty kids!!

There’s been a lot of change in our three main towns, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin, largely positive but some things could still do with an upgrade (no, I’m not retiring just yet!).

The old single-lane Six Mile Creek bridge on Pomona Kin Kin road remains a well signed yet narrow bridge, roughly five metres above a creek and situated on a blind corner clearly designed for a lighter traffic flow from yester year.

Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases.

Cooroora Connect is an initiative of the Pomona & District Community House Inc. The material published in Cooroora Connect may be reproduced only with appropriate authorisation and acknowledgment.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses. The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
