Cooran: The little town that roared Fast gaining a reputation as the ‘mouse that roared’, the town of Cooran is letting its voice be heard more loudly following a well-attended Cooran: It’s Happening event on 24 February.

More than 120 people packed the hall, including Mayor Tony Wellington and two other councillors.

Organised by the Cooran Earth Rights movement, speakers recounted the successful campaign that culminated in the Queensland Government refusing an application to renew a coal exploration event covering the north of Noosa Shire.

However, the town plans to build on this success to maintain the momentum towards becoming a carbon-neutral community.

Show calls for volunteers It takes well over 150 volunteers to run the Noosa Country Show over two days every September. Many more work with the Show Committee during the year to prepare for the event. Every year there is something different that reflects the interests of the volunteers who work throughout the year.

Lions choose local Youth of the Year finalist The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club recently hosted the Youth of the Year club finalist selection at the Lions Den, Pomona, where three outstanding students from Noosa District State High School participated.

This program is designed to encourage students interested in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community.

Entrants also have an opportunity to learn leadership, management, and community service skills from groups of professional men and women.

The candidates – Amber Fry, Alex McDonald, and Ty Kroes – were assessed by three experienced judges, Veronica Mackenzie, Janelle Van Kalken, and Stephen Hilditch, both in private interviews and public speaking.

All three contestants impressed the judging panel with their knowledge of current affairs and community involvement, and made the judging very difficult.

After much deliberation

by the judges, Alex McDonald was selected to progress to the next level of competition, but is unable to attend the next level of competition due to work commitments.

The runner-up, Ty Kroes, will represent CooroyPomona Lions at the zone final, where he will compete against six other students who have won their respective club The participants - Ty Kroes (left), Alex McDonald and Amber Fry selections.

Ty will be supported by a contingent of Lions from the Cooroy Pomona Club on Saturday, 2nd March, at Mudjimba.

Full steam ahead for railway station gallery A bus trip to the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane is one of a number of activities that the Pomona Railway Station Gallery has planned as it promotes artistic endeavour in the hinterland.

The visit on Wednesday, 27 March is a Friends of the Gallery event. The bus departs at 7:40am, returning at 5pm. Tickets are $35 and available through the gallery.

Majestic reunion for old mates Mic Conway’s recent stunning vaudeville, comedy and magic performance at the Majestic Theatre was like ‘old home week’, as he met up with old mates eager to reacquaint themselves with the ARIA award winner and ringmaster of Soapbox Circus, which grew to become the world-famous Circus Oz. First, he was reunited with Chris Lofven, who had been in an early band called Myriad with Mic’s brother Jim. Mic also starred in the iconic Aussie film Oz, that Chris produced and directed.

Former mayor, Bob Abbott, who had known Mic’s father, Jim Conway Sr, from their days together on the Noosa Council in the 1970s, caught up with the performer at The Majestic’s Green Room.

Improving access to Social Services in Noosa The Noosa Social Services Hub operates every second Tuesday 9.30am to 1pm from Tait-Duke Community Cottage in Tewantin.

PARTICIPATING SERVICES

The Hub will serve as a one stop shop for a range of services for community members who may face barriers to accessing social services, and for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

Consultation starts for new Noosa Plan Hinterland residents have until 20 May to provide feedback on the new Noosa Plan – the planning document that will guide how the shire develops and meets the needs of communities for the next 20 years.

The plan may be viewed at the two council libraries, at a temporary display space at 3 Pelican Street, Tewantin, or at a number of ‘popup’ displays in villages across the shire.

Cooran’s pop-up consultation will take place at the Cooran Hall on 14 March, from 10am to 1pm.

The Pomona display is booked for 19 March, 3-6pm, at Pomona Community House.

Preserving the ‘Noosa way of life’ and the natural environment remained cornerstones of the new planning scheme, Mayor Tony Wellington said. “It has a strong

focus on the uniqueness of where we live,” he said.

“The message we received loud and clear during the extensive consultation in 2016 was that Noosa residents highly value their lifestyle as well as the local environment.

They don’t want the fundamental attributes of Noosa Shire to change,” he said.

The New Noosa Plan is the culmination of several years’ work and addresses housing options as well as the emergence of new industries. It also considers the biodiversity values of the region, future transport needs, and opportunities for rural enterprises.

Money seminar for women Noosa Council launches new ‘Disaster Dashboard’ system Local Disaster Coordinator Carl Billingham and Mayor Tony Wellington demonstrate the new Disaster Dashboard on the big screen.

Noosa Council has launched its new online ‘Disaster Dashboard’ a new, one-stop shop for reliable emergency information when disaster strikes.

The website at disaster.noosa.qld.gov.au provides emergency contacts, weather radars, warnings and flood maps, plus information about power outages, road closures and evacuation centres.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Mayor Tony Wellington, said the days of looking at multiple websites were over.

Local community groups have combined to organise a free International Women’s Day event focusing on money management.

Fundraising begins for Anzac service Fundraising has begun for the staging of an Anzac Day Service at Pomona’s restored war memorial.

Heather Ford, a member of the organising committee, has announced that orders are being taken for the sale of memorabilia to assist in defraying costs on the day. A call has gone out to ex-defence personnel who wish to be involved in the ceremony, which will be held at 6pm on 25 April – at the ‘going down of the sun’.

An extensive range of badges and other items is available for purchase.

“Those wishing to purchase anything special should let me know and I will email them a book from which purchases may be requested,” Heather said.

“I am happy to place a bulk order on the condition that people commit to the order and the payment. The committee’s funds are limited.” Closing date for orders is 2 April.

The Pomona Pacers walking group’s first excursion for the year was a perennial favourite along the coastal track through the Noosa National Park to spectacular Hells Gates and back.

Experienced manager will lead Cooran markets revival Market days are set to be revitalised at Cooran on the first and third Sunday of the month.

The first new market will be held on 3 March, on the veranda of the heritage-listed former joinery works building in King Street, now the Bonsai Brewery.

Already strong interest has been shown, with about seven stallholders booked for the first market and more likely on the day, according to the Cooroora Historical Society (CHS) president, Jeanette Alfredson. Her family operated a very successful joinery business from the site for many years.

Today the site is owned by Allan Guymer. “We very much thank Allan for his generosity and interest,” Jeanette said.

Proceeds will aid the Noosa Shire Museum, which the historical society manages.

Jeanette predicts a strong future for the markets.

“CHS member and vice president Trish Kearton, with her long and varied experience in these areas, will be the market manager and has already gained good relations in the community,” she said.

Join the fight to save our native wildlife Normally it is sick and injured native animals that are taken to WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc), but its administrators are hoping that a few caring people will walk through the door next month to become volunteer carers and animal release exponents.

This lucky possum is one of the thousand of native animals cared for by WILVOS and released back into the wild.

Lions Recycling Project Pomona Community House is now officially a collection centre for used spectacles without cases.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program which collects used spectacles and sunglasses.

The program cleans, grades and re-labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland.

The re-labelled end product is packed into boxes of 200 pairs, half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under strict quality control rules.
