Farewell Kathryn Write something for Cooroora Connect they said, a farewell piece. That would be fine if I could get my head around the fact that, after nearly five years, I am actually leaving the position of Community Engagement Coordinator at the Pomona Community House.

Over the years I have worked with so many different individuals, groups and organisations and have been overwhelmed by the time, energy and spirit that people here are willing to give - it’s been inspiring and humbling. Thanks to everyone who has played a part in the many projects the Community House has been a part of. The list is too long to name them all but some of my personal favourites: the King of the Mountain cook-off and seeing some of our local personalities fight it out for King of the Kitchen; our wonderful Community Kitchens with Kate, Deirdre and Helene; the ‘Op Shop Bop’ with our fabulous local op shops; working with local schools for Seniors Week and International Women’s Day; being inspired by kids and facilitators during Youth Week; watching the gardening group turn our small piece of land into gardens overflowing with produce; seeing the amazing lantern parade at the ‘Night of Lights’ and of course the Christmas Lights Bus Tour even when the bus got stuck on the roundabout!

And to everyone at the Community House who I’ve worked with; volunteers, committee (past and present) and Brian and Heather - well - it’s been like being embraced by a very large, loving and supportive family so - a huge thank you. OK - getting teary now!

So, there’s really nothing more to say than, thank you for the opportunity to contribute to this wonderful community; it’s been an absolute pleasure and delight.

We are a group of passionate, caring and skilled people who love where we live and what we do, we are in fact a type of family for each other and for many of you but we do need more of those precious commodities – TIME and energy.

In just a few days our coordinators position will reduce from a full time equivalent to less than half the original capacity as a part time one which Heather will fill two days each week.

This has the potential to drastically reduce the services we can offer unless we can find among you, local Volunteers to take up the cause and contribute your time, leadership, your passion, interests or skills.

Could you see yourself working with our PCH family, joining our Committee, helping with the roles of the board as President, Treasurer, Secretary or as a committee member in a more specific capacity? Pastor Joy Cross, from Living Hope Christian Outreach Centre is excited about the relocation and grand opening “Options 4 U” and Food Connection which is now located downstairs at Pomona Community House, 1 Memorial Ave, Pomona. This opportunity will strengthen the ties between two community organisations and allow our services to flourish.

Options 4 U provide affordable clothing, books, bric-a-brac, furniture and other treasures and is open Monday to Friday 9am-4.30pm and Friday and Saturday 9am-12pm.

Pastor Joy believes in offering a helping hand to others and the Food Connection provides a much needed relief to people and families who are struggling in these hard times. Food Hampers are available for $30 (valued at $80) are stacked with staples and luxury items. Joy believes the help and support from other community groups like Victory Care Centre run by John Leeke has made this dream a continued reality.

Joy would also like to thank her team of dedicated volunteers and appreciates the support of the local community.

QUT students help design Pomona’s new fire station When the Pomona community wanted help to design a new fire station for the town, they turned to our future architects and town planners for a solution. Three students from the Queensland University of Technology School of Design answered the call during the university’s project week, held in April, to produce fire station concept drawings based on community feedback about what people regard as Pomona’s special characteristics and architectural heritage.

The designs produced by Henri Chau, Josh Pyke and Ololade Adeniyi have been presented to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS), which will study them and respond with a formal set of plans for the new fire station site adjacent to the Ambulance Station in Reserve Street. The QFRS is awaiting next month’s state budget for confirmation that construction funding is available for the new station. If money is forthcoming, Pomona will have its new fire station about the middle of 2014. It can’t come soon enough for townsfolk and auxiliary fire brigade personnel frustrated by the inadequacy of the current fire station on a flood-prone site opposite the Majestic Theatre.

Pomona Community House hosted the visit by the students, assisted by their tutor, Donna Phillips, and Kin Kin-based architect, Belinda Scott, who has had experience designing country fire stations in New South Wales. The team worked, slept and ate at the Lawson Shed over a three-day period while they researched their project. The Shed was also the venue for a community gathering by about 40 people who the students interviewed for information. The QFRS briefed the students before they travelled to Pomona.

Pomona Community House president, Dawn Gwynne said the fire station design process had been a wonderful example of how a town can rally to make things happen. “Members of our own photography club undertook a pictorial essay of the town to send to the students before they arrived here. The Noosa Museum opened its archives for research purposes. Pomona Meals on Wheels assisted with some of the catering for the students, while the community bus was made available so they could inspect fire stations in towns from Noosa to Gympie,” Dawn said. “The students were commendable ambassadors for the university and made everyone they met feel proud about the calibre of graduates who will be designing our buildings and towns into the future.”

The exercise also had a profound influence on the students.

Ololade Adeniyi, the youngest of the students, said she had learned to interact effectively with people of different age groups, genders, occupations and ideals to strike a balance reflected in the final design concepts. “I am very grateful to the Pomona community for giving me my first opportunity to gain hands-on experience in professional architectural practice,” she said.

Describing his experience as ‘humbling’, John Pike, said he had discovered that effective consultation was the key to fostering good design solutions.

Henri Chau, a fourth-year design student, said: “As a university student, real world experience with clients do not come by often.

This opportunity has allowed me to gain valuable insight, not only into working with clients, but also government departments, in this case the Fire and Rescue Service.

“I hope the people of Pomona will receive the best fire station that they deserve in the near future and hope that our insights provided the inspiration needed to realise their dream.”

Dawn Gwynne said the timely consultation with the students and their mentors had avoided the situation where standard ‘industrial sheds’ typically used by the QFRS for operations in small communities would have been inappropriate for the heart of Pomona.

“The students were able to come up with a more appropriate design concept that articulated a variety of views. These are the plans the QFRS will now work with,” she said.

The state government has announced that the Department of Community Safety will prepare a master plan for an emergency services precinct, involving the Ambulance Station and the proposed new fire station at Pomona. While retaining their individual premises, access, parking and other aspects will be examined across both building areas. The Sunshine Coast Council will be consulted also.

Flood works near completion Work is nearing completion on a $207,000 project to improve the flow of water beneath Reserve Street at Pomona, in the vicinity of Rifle Street. The work won’t reduce the amount of water that runs beside and down Rifle Street during wet weather, Division 12 councillor, Tony Wellington, says, but it will improve water flow efficiency and reduce the amount of time Reserve Street is covered by floodwater during a flood event.

Cr Wellington said the remaining work included construction of a footpath along Reserve Street, replacing a wooden footbridge, and the relocation of a water pipe. Both had acted as an impediment to storm water getting away, as debris washed against them, forming a partial dam.

At the Rifle Street junction, two culverts divert water beneath Reserve Street, a state-owned road. Cr Wellington said investigations had shown that water approaching the culverts from the top side passed through only one of the culverts and that fast-flowing water formed a vortex that did not allow maximum flow under Reserve Street when full-capacity flow was required. “The work the council is doing will open up both culverts and allow floodwater to get away faster,” Cr Wellington said.

Meanwhile, Cr Wellington said a substantial flood modelling exercise undertaken by the Sunshine Coast Council following the major flood at Pomona last year was almost ready and would be presented mid-year. It involved laser measurement of trees, creeks and other landscape features, together with measurement of flood heights using the February 2012 flood as a base from which flood level rises could be predicted.

“Out of that modelling, a range of measures will be considered, including pooling ponds, levee banks and maybe even the removal of a house or two. The most effective and feasible options will be explained to a residents’ flood discussion group,” Cr Wellington said.

Pomona Pacers Happy birthday to us! It was 3 years ago on 20 April 2010 that Faye Patrick walked the first walk for what was then the Pomona Walking Group. Faye is still an active member as are Ellen Leape, Coral Telford and Michael and Ellen Kelly who joined in with her in that first week.

TALL TREES ART EXHIBITION EMBRACES THE CREATIVITY OF OUR COMMUNITY The annual Tall Trees Art Exhibition is on again, in Cooran, on the weekend of 18, 19 May 2013. Come along and check it out, in the Memorial School of Arts Hall in the main street of Cooran; free admission all day Saturday and Sunday between 9am 5pm.

There will be 37 exhibitors presenting their artworks – fantastic paintings, drawings, ceramics, handcrafted silver jewellery, photography, sculptural pieces and woodwork, by well credentialed local artists including Lew Brennan, perennial exhibition People’s Choice winner Peter Teakle, as well as our promising young artist Amelia Hofsteede. At our Meet the Artists evening starting from 5.30pm on Saturday 18 May, local Community Identity Christine Ballinger will be the guest speaker and will also officially open the Exhibition. Tracey O’Brien will be playing her beautiful classical guitar music during the opening night.

Throughout the two days of the Exhibition, there will be a series of short ‘Artist Talks’ focussing on current exhibited work. A schedule of talks will be on the website. Snacks and Tea & Coffee are available for purchase. This will be the fifth Tall Trees Exhibition in four years; run by Tall Trees Art Inc, a collective, not for profit organisation committed to developing and nurturing artistic pursuits and interest throughout the local community.

We had a rather long day on 24 April. Five of us travelled to Buderim to join up with the Buderim Heart Beats to walk the Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Trail at 7.00 am. It was the first most of us had heard of a railway (which closed down in 1935) between those two townships. Being accustomed to our small group (fewer than ten) it was a bit of a culture shock to be part of a large group – around forty walkers. However the walk was very scenic and interesting and our coffee afterwards at the historical Vanda’s Garage was thoroughly appreciated.

The Moon Walk that night was excellent – a pleasant meal together followed by a walk along the Noosa River under a beautiful full moon visible in a clear sky. The weather was just perfect. Our mascot – Godfrey Gadabout – helped to make the occasion a little more festive.

It has been excellent walking weather lately – just the right amount of coolness in the air during our daily walks starting at 7.00 am from the Pomona Community House. Now that things have dried out a bit we will endeavor to try out a few of our favourite bush tracks again.

The next two Moon Walks will be on May 22 and June 26.
