Leigh delights in unusual

character portraiture, where she not only paints someone’s face on canvas, but adds what she calls ‘layers’ of images of things associated with that person. Sometimes, the inspiration comes from dream flashes in her sleep.

We all know that Australia’s got talent and many people claim to have the x-factor, but the real talent lies among the future citizens of our region who will perform at the eighth Pomona in the Park event – to be held this year on Thursday 28 November at Stan Topper Park.

She mainly uses acrylic paint and mixed media to compose her pieces.

Leigh says the leafy courtyard her business occupies is both a refuge and an inspiration in the heart of Pomona. “I feel the need to paint because everything in my world is right. I need the creative outlet.” She began painting seriously after completing an arts course at Noosa TAFE in 2009.

“I have had the idea of opening a gallery for some time. I looked at this place at the beginning of the year.

When I realised I had quite a number of pieces stacked against the wall at home, I took the plunge.

“I really love this spot – I want to make it work,” Leigh said.

How are we recovering Time has healed things. This is a resilient community that rallied to provide support at the outset to those who needed it most. While some individuals continue to struggle, the community as a whole has moved on.

The recent floods proved, once again, what a caring community we are fortunate to live in. Even though it evoked tremendous generosity, the floods took us beyond the point where we could sustain practical goodwill, but only momentarily while we made order out of that initial chaos. Happily the pendulum has swung back; the majority has recovered, although some individuals remain in need of our support. We will remain aware of their needs as we continue to care for one another.

The flood tested our resolve, but also proved our resilience. As we approach Christmas, we should look to that for inspiration and hope.

The question to ask is not how well the hinterland has recovered, but how focused the council and the state government are on fixing the problem. The spirit of the people is never in question; it’s the capacity and the vision of our politicians that is often lacking. The Council was proactive in establishing the Pomona Flood Study but it will be up to a new Noosa Council to implement the actions required to provide a flood-free economic platform on which we can build our future. It’s up to the people of our region to ensure the council they elect has the vision to carry it through.

Flood modelling almost complete A flood model of Pomona commissioned after the 2012 floods and possible solutions to reducing their impact is being finalised with the Sunshine Coast Council, but the results won’t be released publicly, if at all, until they have been put to a community reference group later this year.

Whatever the solutions, their cost and the responsibility for implementing them rest with the new Noosa Council.

Soon after the floods, community reference groups were formed at Tewantin, Cooroy and Pomona to liaise with council staff, based on local knowledge, and to feed information back to their respective communities.

Division 12 representative, Tony Wellington, said the modelling work had progressed within the council. “That modelling is complete for Daintree Estate, and an initial presentation has been

provided to the reference group. A further meeting has been arranged to discuss mitigation works.

Similar meetings will occur when the modelling for Cooroy and Pomona has been completed and analysed,” Cr Wellington said.

A member of the Pomona reference group, Mary Lehane, said she had lost faith with the process. To her knowledge, the Pomona reference group had not met since last year. She has not lived in her house since March 2012 because of flood damage.

Another member, Wayne Voss, says solutions must include land swaps or buybacks of the worst-affected properties. However, he and his wife Shaylene have been informed that this is a state government matter, not an issue for council. He is looking forward to the release of the flood study findings and hopes it will identify impediments that hold back floodwaters when it rains.

Take advantage of free business diagnostic service

Sunshine Coast Business Enterprise Centre manager Rod Richards is offering a free business diagnostic for any business in the hinterland that was affected by the floods, either physically or subsequently through poor sales and a difficult trading environment.

The program is being subsidised by AusIndustry, a federal government agency, and is being delivered locally by the not-for-profit Sunshine Coast Business Enterprise Centre (BEC).

“I am surprised that some owners do not have a clear understanding of their break-even point. We can help them be more attuned to the business side and provide practical tools to keep things on track,” Rod said.

Just 18 months ago, people gathered at the Pomona Bowling Club, anxious that the community be aided post-flood so that our local economy could grow stronger.

This latest offer of business assistance is a wish come true.

The professional counselling can be tailored to each separate enterprise, depending on need. It may involve one or two sessions checking cashflow and marketing to the appointment of a mentor who could assist over several months. This person could be someone with a specific knowledge of your area of business.

We all monitor our health through regular check-ups with a doctor, so why should our business be any different? Likewise, how often do we say or hear the words ‘the government should do something about this?’

“Our program aims to maximise the growth potential, prosperity and sustainability of small businesses through enhanced access to information and advice on issues important to establishing, sustaining and/or growing a small business.”

Business growth was a specialty, including tutoring business owners about web sales. The BEC also offers ongoing networking opportunities.

One hundred and fifty assistance packages are being funded across the Sunshine Coast. The extent to which other communities take up the offers and our local businesses don’t, those towns will become stronger relative to the communities of the Noosa Hinterland. We will be the poorer as a consequence.

It behoves every enterprise affected to consider taking advantage of the expert assistance on offer – or bite the tongue when next tempted to utter these words – ‘the government should do something about it.’

The consequences of flooding Hidden problems hinder recovery Inadequate planning that fails to address the long-term effects of major disasters on communities leaves them economically vulnerable, according to a report titled From Disaster to Renewal, published by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI).

The RAI research found that many recovery efforts failed to take advantage of significant financial reinvestment in a community. They focused excessively on returning a town back to ‘normal’ rather than adapting to changed economic drivers, or exploring opportunities for renewal. It might not be until five or 10 years down the track that the full impact of a disaster on a community is realised, by which stage reversing the negative economic trend can be extremely difficult.

Looking at some of the typical barriers to the recovery process, the RAI found that even something as innocent as well-intentioned donations of goods were a mixed blessing. Not only did the present problems with storage and distribution, but the donations weakened sales for local business. The report also scrutinised the role of the media. Excessive focus on the extent of destruction in a town can create a post-disaster stigma; the perception among the wider community that the town has been

wiped off the map.

“Not only does this have a negative impact on the psyche of the recovering town – and peoples’ decisions to stay and rebuild – but it can deter important economic drivers, such as tourism and investment later down the track, when images of destruction continue to resonate long after the media attention has turned elsewhere,” the report said.

The institute’s CEO, Su McCluskey, said stakeholders needed to be aware of the roles they played, both positive and negative, on the local economy as a community recovered. There was a serious risk of local businesses collapsing and their small margins being highly vulnerable to changes in market conditions, she said. “Unless we are aware of the challenges for the local economy, a negative spiral of population displacement can develop, whereby businesses close, jobs are lost, and people are forced away in search of work,” Su said.

“The true impact of this is often masked by the ‘reconstruction mirage’, where an influx or workers and demand for goods and services temporarily buoy the local economy as the town is rebuilt. The reconstruction phase also comes with its own challenges, where an

excessive focus on getting things back to ‘normal’ can fail to take strategic advantage of significant, and sometimes unprecedented, government investment in the community.”

From Disaster to Renewal also found that stronger communities adapted to changes as a result of disaster, including the ability to recognise that local economic drivers may have been altered permanently. For those that don’t act accordingly, the impact may be felt for up to 25 years down the track.

Large number of people volunteer Our district is punching above weight among the ranks of people who volunteer, but we are not as good as those living in the railway towns around Landsborough or on the Blackall Range, where an estimated 23.4 per cent of the population give up part of their time to work for a good cause.

Regional Development Australia has found that 21.3

per cent of people living in the ‘Nambour to Pomona’ corridor undertook volunteer work in 2011 – higher than the Queensland average (18.7 per cent) and greater than the figure for Noosa overall (19.9 per cent).

Pomona’s volunteering effort was equal to that of Buderim and above the Sunshine Coast’s overall average of 20.2 per cent.

NEXT YEAR’S SHOW DATE IN SEPTEMBER The Queensland Chamber of Agriculture Show Societies governs the show circuit dates for towns across the state. It usually allocates Noosa the 36th week of the year for its annual event, making September 5 and 6 the likely dates for the 2014 Noosa Country Show.

Back at the showground, in a sign of optimism amid a recovering local economy, all trade display spaces were booked out this year, even if one or two exhibitors did not front due to illness. Colourful and imaginative art filled the squash court interior with artists’ interpretation of paintings and fabrics in keeping with this year’s theme of H2O (water).

A snake charmer attracted consistent crowds across both days; the other popular ‘live’ exhibit being an animal nursery for small children.

An exhausted, but satisfied show society secretary, Lorraine Fraley, said she and her committee were happy with the show and with a large crowd on the Friday night.

Saturday numbers were affected by the election, she believed, and also by a clash of dates with a food show at Maleny. Planning will begin almost immediately for next year’s show.

Lorraine especially thanked all the volunteers who assisted before, during and after the show weekend. “And, as always, the show would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the stewards and judges. I thank them also,” she said.

Entries up and quality better Away from the glitz of the show, its more traditional segments promoting rural pursuits and household accomplishments made a strong comeback in 2013. Whether it is a focus on organic produce, a strong emphasis on hobby farming in the hinterland, backyard chooks or home cooking promoted by peak viewing television programs, the show heirloom exhibits were well-supported across the board.

Home-made honey production was a new section judged this year, attracting 23 entries and creating stiff competition that resulted in only a point separating champion and reserve champion. Vic Finney of Kilkivan was winner on the day.

Entries were steady in the cooking classes, with the children’s decorated biscuit section keenly contested. The biggest mistake entrants made was to undercook items, according to judge Sandra Wyatt of Gympie. The largest increase in entry numbers was in the fruit and vegetable sections – inspired, judges believe, by the surge in backyard veggie gardens due to a proliferation of garden shows and a desire to eat fresh and chemical free.

Quilts were on display around the walls of the historic main pavilion, drawing added attention to the crochet and delicate needlework.

In the photography section, the quantity of entries was up, but the number of entrants was down. The H20 theme for paintings attracted imaginative entries. The grand prize went to Lisa Jorgansen for her depiction of a stormy sea. Another outstanding entry was a mixed media composition from Rebekah Dundon.

While cattle numbers on show were steady – down slightly in dairy due to a decline in that industry, the quality on offer was good, according to judges. A Jersey cow presented by Todd Brown, of Curra, was named supreme cow.

These oversize clowns were a hit with the crowd at this years show.

The beef cattle section again attracted entries from the Nambour and Noosa high schools, and what a fine selection was on show. Traditionally, the Noosa Country Show is used by many to ease young cattle into the show routine. Judge Warren Smith said all beef entries were well-presented, although he would like to see some with less condition next year.

Fifty-four exhibitors presented 354 dogs for judging in the dog show.

Now in its fifth year – and getting better all the time – the Pomona Op Shop Bop fashion parade will be held on Saturday 19 October, beginning at 9am. BE SAFE THIS FIRE SEASON The fire season is here, and people are reminded that a permit is required for burning timber or debris that has a volume greater than two metres in any direction. Even a fire smaller than 2m by 2m by 2m cannot be lit during a day of high fire danger.

In some cases, council permission may be required to light a fire and it pays to let the neighbours know also. An application form must be filled out and submitted. It can be downloaded from www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Permits to burn are issued by local fire wardens across the hinterland.

The public is being invited to present ideas for the community use of vacant land beside the car park adjacent to Pomona and District Community House (PCH).

PCH has negotiated a fiveyear lease of the plot from Queensland Rail and is considering possible uses, including as an extension of the small community garden

near the Lawson Shed. If it is put to that use, people will be able to pick herbs and produce in season.

A walk down Factory Street of yesteryear

Noosa Museum

This is the first of a series of short articles on the history of Factory Street, beginning at the northern end.

The Page family moved to Pomona from Boreen Point in 1919 when Herbert Page started a furniture making and hardware business on what was then Cooran Road.

Many other commercial enterprises were constructed along the road, which later became known as Factory Street after the furniture factory was established.

Herbert Page was a selftaught accountant. As secretary of the Royal National Agricultural Horticultural and Industrial Association, which conducted the Brisbane Exhibition, he spent a lot of his time in Brisbane.

After building the furniture workshop he then constructed a garage and, in later years, another shed with street frontage, then

another building that became a baker’s shop which he let. He obtained the Ford motor car dealership in 1925 and finally erected a doublefronted showroom for motor cars and a garage workshop on the corner of Factory and Mill streets.

Over the years the business has had various names.

However, since 1968 it has been known as Page Furnishers Pty Ltd and is now the largest employer in Pomona.

The business has won awards for its apprentice schemes and is currently managed by Allan Page.

Incidentally, he is reported to have been the last baby born in the old Pomona Hospital.

The rinks of the Pomona Bowls Club were packed for the annual ladies competition day organised in honour of Elizabeth Dewhirst, of Cooran, (right) the divisional president of the Gympie District Ladies Bowlers Association and Veronis O’Connor, of Cooroy, the Pomona ladies president. About 60 competitors from across the nine clubs in the division were in Pomona for the event.

A batch of new recruits has bolstered the ranks of Pomona Bowls Club lady bowlers, but new members are welcome at any time.

And you don’t have to have experience to join, says Ladies Games Director, Jenny Smith. Husband and wife duo Charles and Elizabeth Dewhirst are the Pomona Bowls Club coaches. They conduct discreet lessons for newbies before they hit the green.

Coaching sessions are held usually on a Friday, the same day as regular social bowls. Wednesday is the designated ladies day.

Bowling is not just about rolling balls down an immaculately-kept carpet of grass, according to Jenny. “It is a thinking game that keeps the brain active. It is like a moving

chess game, because the idea is to place your bowl, anticipating your opponent’s next move.

“It is a consuming pastime once you get into it.”

Jenny believes the club offers a means for people of all ages to remain fit and active while offering social support around a friendly game. The club surroundings are good, and for those worried about playing under the hot sun, members play in casual attire beneath a retractable shadecloth.

The club restaurant opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and again for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Great season for Cutters and award-winning coach

MOUNTAIN MEN: The Pomona-Cooran Cutters performed consistently all season under the direction of coach Phil Anderson.

In their first grand final appearance in 21 years, the Pomona-Cooran Cutters took on the Beerwah Bulldogs in the C-Grade Rugby League Grand Final at Kawana. The team fought valiantly, but the ‘Dogs proved too strong on the day, winning 20-6.
