Follow the laneway between the Pomona Pub and the Saffron Flavour Indian restaurant to the hidden world of Leigh Hooker and her Shoebox Gallery where, this month, she is displaying her interpretation of the world’s most famous painting, the inscrutable Mona Lisa (pictured). Leigh delights in unusual

character portraiture, where she not only paints someone’s face on canvas, but adds what she calls ‘layers’ of images of things associated with that person. Sometimes, the inspiration comes from dream flashes in her sleep. “Gradually things come together in my mind, a bit like a jigsaw puzzle,” Leigh said. Continued page 2

CANDIDATES VIE FOR YOUR VOTE If you were daunted by 82 names on a Senate ticket for the recent federal election, it will be a snap to select your local government representatives from a Melbourne Cup field of about 17 candidates when 35,000 Noosans file into the polling booth for the second time in two months, this time to elect their new Noosa Council.

endorsement as the new mayor and six councillors who will run a reconstituted council from 1 January 2014. Council deamalgamation champion, Noel Playford, faces a runoff for mayor with Dr Patricia Petersen, who will be supported by five candidates united under a ‘Noosa Independents’ banner.

Local Government Minister David Crisafulli opened the barriers on what will be the most important Noosa Council election since inauguration of the original shire in 1910 when he announced 9 November as the election date.

The convenor of the Hinterland Noosa Alliance, Allan Bonsall, of Kin Kin, has announced his candidature.
