Big Bob, our local, our legend

BY ALEX PURCELL Nationally, Bob Abbot was once known as “one of the most recognisable Local Government politicians in the country”. Locally, he is known as Big Bob, Noosa’s former mayor who went undefeated every one of the 10 elections he contested. A man who pushed back against amalgamation to help give Noosa Shire back its voice. Personally, he is known as a Boreen Point local, a harmonica-playing blues enthusiast and the loving partner of late artist, Sue Coburn. For me, a born and raised Cooroy local, writing this feature on Bob, my biggest concern is I’ll not be able to

do this great man justice. But here goes. Growing up, I knew Bob as the big man with the beard who wore braces. I’d see him around town and I knew he was the Mayor but I had no idea what that entailed. Now as an adult, living in the Noosa Shire, I can see Bob not for who he is, but what he did. He is the man who helped make Noosa the way it is today. The lack of towering high-rise developments, the multitude of beautiful green spaces and a community that knows how to live within, and care for its environment, not the other way around. That’s what Bob did. And for Bob, with all the achievements in his political career that spans over 30 years, when asked what stands out to him most, he said, “The most important thing I’ve

done is what you see in Noosa today.” Noosa today is a culmination of hard work that started back in the mid-80s when Noel Playford was elected mayor and Bob deputy mayor. “The relationship between Noel and I has impacted on the way Noosa has evolved. The relationship we had and the willingness we had to fight for what we wanted shaped Noosa. “We had similar views of what the outcome could be. Conceptually, I am a community person. I wanted a community that was sustainable. “For Noel, his primary driver was the environment. Continued on page 2

Big Bob, our legend, our local Continued from page 1 “He wanted to build an environment that would sustain a community. “Together, we focussed on how to get a community sustainable within the environment and make them work hand-in-hand.” This achievement was recognised on an international level when Noosa was awarded the status of Biosphere Reserve under the Man in the Biosphere Program by UNISCO. “They recognised our focus on how people live in the environment, rather than how the environment can live without people in it. The award was a recognition for the communities ability to live sustainably within the environment, not just the quality of it,” Bob said. And thanks to Bob and Noel’s foresight and dedication, the past, current and future residents of the Noosa Shire are the winners. But this journalist wonders if people really know just how lucky we were to have Bob Abbot as our mayor for 15 years; 11 of those as the mayor of Noosa and four as Sunshine Coast Mayor. Because Bob came to this area by fate and could have easily ended up the mayor of Brisbane or Gympie (his words, not mine). “Many years ago, a mate and I would drive up to Fraser Island from Brisbane and we always came through this area. Going up over Black Mountain, you could see the lights of Pomona and Mount Cooroora looming up in the darkness, and I would say I want to go there one day. “Before we were married, my then partner Vonnie and I decided to move from Brisbane and we came up to look at a property near Gympie when I saw a notice tacked on a real estate agent’s door. It was a notice for the agent, letting them know this property was now available we bought it that morning.” The property was a homestead on 73 acres on Schreibers Road in Cooran, which the soon-to-be Abbots bought with “every dollar they had”, which was $27,500 in 1977. “Had we not dropped into that place, I wouldn’t have become the Mayor of Noosa or indeed ‘the most recognisable Local Government politician in the country’, as I was once described.” Bob’s progression into politics has been covered at length before. But essentially, as an electrician contracting to Pomona, Kin Kin and Cooran and with Vonnie showing dogs and horses at the shows, Bob found himself attending a Noosa Show Society special meeting one evening, walking in as an “interested person” and walking out as the president. “The show society was failing, as many were at that time but we managed to turn it around and become viable again. In 1981, when one of the Noosa councillors retired five months before the election, some of the people who encouraged me to join the show society said to me ‘here’s

your opportunity, we now want you to be our councillor as well’. “I ummed and ahhed and finally put my hand up for the casual vacancy only to be knocked back by a nine to three vote of the council. “One of the councillors spoke to me days later and told me I’d been stitched up, that ‘they didn’t expect anyone else to run, they’d already promised it to the other guy’. “Well, that got my back up. So, five months later I stood for general election and won it.” Bob attributes this knock back to the moment that changed his life. “Not winning that first casual vacancy, I went in a different direction. I liken every decision we make to walking out a door and having to choose to go left or right. Whichever way you choose, your life will change direction so every decision has to have integrity.” In 1982, Noosa Shire then had five divisions and Bob was elected Councillor of Division 1, which was Cooran and Kin Kin. “Back then there were 540 people on the electoral roll and I probably knew 490 of them personally.” Bob’s strong community connections carried him from there as he spent the next 15 years as a councillor before becoming mayor in 1997. Outside of his political career, Bob also worked for the Gympie Music Muster for 15 years, an event close to his blues-loving heart. The last four of those years were as a Board Director of Gympie Muster Limited. “People know I play the harmonica but they don’t all know that I have played on stages at some of the biggest festivals in Queensland and New South Wales. “One of bands, the Fabulous Green Machine has played at the Gympie Music Muster several times, Caloundra Music Festival twice, the Woodford Folk Festival, Darling Harbour Jazz and Blues and

Byron Bay Blues Festival.” Earlier this year, Bob was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his “service to local government as councillor, deputy mayor and mayor...and to communities of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast,” as well as his beloved Gympie Music Muster and Noosa Show Society “Former campaign coordinator and mentor Ian Williams and my late partner Sue put the OAM submitted the application but it took such a long time to come through that Sue wasn’t here to see it happen, unfortunately.” Bob’s long-term partner and artist, Sue passed away after a l5 year battle with breast cancer. “Sue was a woman who lived her life with pain and then I came along and probably made it worse for her,” he laughed. “Sue came into my life when I was already in the mayoralty. She was philosophical in the way she saw life and got me to understand why I do a lot of the things I do and taught me many other things about myself along the way.

“She taught me how to use my intuition, something my entire career is based on.” Bob and Sue were together for 18 beautiful years, living in their home in Boreen Point. “Sue was a well-known artist in her own right. A visual artist, she had an eye for detail. Everything you see in this house is all about her.” The walls of Bob and Sue’s house are covered in artworks, there are cane baskets on the floors, shelves and walls and everywhere you look there are fascinating collectables, beautiful antiques and knickknacks of every shape and size. The result is an inspiring eclectic space that is interesting and inviting. “Back in the day when the pub was being built (the Apollonian Hotel) I called in there a few times and once they were operational, I got an invitation to work in the pub as a barman, glassy as well as in the spit roast shed. “When Sue and I got together she lived here in Boreen Point and all of that is what dragged me back here to live. “You don’t find Boreen Point, Boreen Point finds you.” When Bob retired from politics in 2012, it was a shock to everyone - except Bob. “My biggest mentor Tommy Burns told me ‘there’s two things you’ve got to remember about politics Bob, one, your electorate knows more about you than what you think they do and two, you’ve got to go when they want you to stay rather than staying ‘til they want you to go’. “And I think following that advice had a lot to do with my success. “When I made the decision to retire in 2012 it was one of the hardest decisions to make but I knew I was jaded and Tommy’s words kept repeating in my head. “When I made the announcement there was a bit of shock and horror. But when I said, ‘there is work to be done on the Sunshine Coast but it won’t be me doing it any more’, Tommy stopped talking in my head. “People still say I wish you’d come back and I say, ‘no thanks, I’ve done my time’.”

How COVID forced one local business to change

We’re back! Your favourite community newspaper, The Cooroy Rag is back with plans to be bigger and better than before. After a forced suspension due to COVID-19, the Cooroy Rag committee decided the best course of action was to take a break. The Cooroy Rag first hit the streets in 1961 as a simple six to eight foolscap pages stapled together, advertising local businesses, upcoming events and social activities. While the format has changed over the past 59 years, what the Rag stands for has not: it will continue to be a voice for the community, a beacon in the local news scene. With new professional journalistic input and a team that is able to draw on a long connection with the newspaper, the region, its businesses and its residents, the Rag will bring you local news, indepth people profiles, business stories, local faces, community news and sporting wraps with plans to republish content onto a new news website in the near future. And as the only newspaper in Australia to contribute all of its money back to the community after costs, the Rag will remain a not-forprofit community enterprise, overseen by a volunteer board, with surplus income distributed back to the community through grants to local clubs and organisations.

When businesses were forced to stop trading in anticipation for the COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year, one local business owner adapted instead. E Fitness Pomona owner Erin Yarwood told the Cooroy Rag before the closure she had been teaching 20 plus classes a week and training a handful of personal training clients. “The day the official lockdown was declared, I knew I had to come up with another way to keep people active and moving. “I knew I had to go online somehow and luckily, a couple of girls in my classes were already using Zoom for Uni and suggested I try that platform. “I’d never used Zoom before but that day I logged on and had a little play around. I was so nervous to teach my first class, but it was actually really fun! Within a couple of days I was up and running with my

new found online classes.” The fitness instructor who has her studio in the old Masonic building in Pomona, said she offered the first week of online classes for free while she felt her way through her new style of teaching and was surprised by the response. “I wasn’t teaching as many classes as I would normally do face-to-face but I was still teaching around 15 classes a week through Zoom and getting good numbers, which was really encouraging. “Some classes had up to 24 participants. I have a big screen computer so was able to see everyone working out from the comfort of their own home, which was really cool. I loved seeing everyone’s dogs in the background too!” Erin said teaching the online classes also allowed her to reconnect with past clients who had moved away from the area.

“Some of my old clients who now live in Melbourne, Chinchilla, Cairns, Woodgate and Brisbane all joined in. It’s been great to reconnect with everyone again.” So much so, that Erin is still teaching three online classes each week as well as her face-to-face classes that have begun again in her Pomona studio. “Even locals are combining online and face-to-face classes these days. It’s great to have that option.” While it was never something she would have done if she hadn’t been forced to, Erin feels that it’s been a real positive. “It totally pushed me out of my comfort zone, which is always a good thing.” Erin is back at her lovely studio six days a week offering a range of classes from Pilates to Metafit, Pump to Gentle Exercise and more. All classes are catered for all fitness levels. “Although I’m technically allowed to have more people in each class with the COVID rules, I am still limiting numbers to 14 people (especially for Pilates) to allow for the feeling of having more space. My online booking system via StudioPay is great to keep a tally on numbers.”

Hinterland Adventure Playground construction delayed

Adam Coe ARN 1254129

Construction of Cooroy’s much anticipated nature-based playground on the Cooroy Creek site has been delayed due to COVID-19. Mayor Clare Stewart said COVID-19 has delayed the assessment of tenders. “Our staff are still assessing tenders for the project and we hope to have further talks in coming weeks about the project,” she said. Noosa Council has adopted a $27 million capital works program for the 2020-21 year. $1 million has been allocated in this year’s budget to further progress the Hinterland Adventure Playground. The State Government has already committed $2.8 million to the project.

Noosa Councillors have delivered a freeze on rates notices as part of a “grassroots-style” $125 million budget that strives to guide residents and business on the COVID-19 road to recovery. About 80 per cent of Noosa ratepayers will receive no increase in their total rates charge, in recognition of the severe impact the pandemic has had on the community. “This has been an extremely difficult and challenging budget,” said Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart.. “We have reduced a number of levies to offset the CPI increases in the general rate and the three-bin waste collection charge to help ease the burden on household budgets,” she said. The Waste collection charge increases by $6.50, while the environment levy is reduced by $14, the sustainable transport levy by $7.50 and the heritage levy drops $5. “We have been very frugal in where we spend money to ensure we deliver what the ratepayers expect,” she said. “By putting residents and businesses first with a financially responsible budget, I’m confident that we are well placed to not only recover but come out even stronger than before,” she said. ■ ■ ■

visitors to the area who are showing cold or flulike symptoms to get tested. Funded by the Commonwealth Government and run by local medical outreach service, Sunny Street, anyone can either book a time or drop in for a test between 9am-5pm seven days a week. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said the clinic is a timely addition to the region as the pandemic continues to rage in other areas of the country. “The clinic is a valuable asset to the region at the moment. “Together as a community we are working hard and adhering to all advice to continue to protect our region from any potential outbreaks. This is just another step in the right direction,” she said. “The J is a well-known and easily accessible location for the clinic with a huge carpark and all the right infrastructure, so we were thrilled to be able to support the initiative. Robb Major, Senior Manager at Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network was part of the team that identified the need for a mobile outreach clinic for the Noosa region. “Sunny Street is a trusted organisation in the area, with a strong history of supporting the health needs of transient and vulnerable populations. We’re pleased that they have been able to step up to play this critical part in the health infrastructure of the region,” he said. "By providing a dedicated space for testing and treating people with cold and flu-like symptoms, we can reduce the pressure on the rest of the health system, freeing it up for the day-to-day health issues that people face. "As a community, we’ve been successful in managing our COVID-19 response so far, but now is not the time to be complacent. "Flu season is upon us, and we’re pleased this clinic is up and running to support the Hospital and Health Service’s fever clinics, alongside our dedicated GPs in diagnosing and treating people with respiratory illness,” Mr Major said. The Sunny Street Mobile Respiratory Clinic at The J at Noosa Junction is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm. Bookings are preferred however walk-ins will be accepted. To book phone 5313 7778.

BY NARELLE SCHUH Just a picturesque 25 minute drive from Cooroy lies the small Noosa Hinterland town of Kin Kin. The tight-knit community offers accommodation and health retreats, outdoor art galleries, an award winning restaurant, traditional country pub and even a gift shop recently opened on “Main Street”. Kin Kin boasts more heritage-listed dwellings than anywhere else in the Noosa Shire. As the central hub for the Noosa Trail Network, it is currently in the spotlight with the unveiling of the Noosa Trail Masterplan by Tourism Noosa to promote trail-based tourism in the Hinterland. The Kin Kin Creations Market is back from 8.00am to 12.00pm on the first Sunday of the month, featuring fresh local produce, art and second-hand treasures. On the drive over the range visit the Kin Kin Arboretum which recently received an upgrade thanks to a collaboration between the local Kin Kin Community Group, Noosa Council and Noosa and District Landcare.

Pomona BY KAREN FINZEL Upgrades for cultural sites like the Pomona Memorial School of Arts and Railway Gallery were recently announced for Noosa Council Budget 2020. The hall location on the western side of the railways lines is built mostly of hardwood and weatherboard donated by Richmond River Milling Company, erected by contractor Mr W Wardop to commemorate those who served in World War One. It is reported the official opening 5th September 1926 was attended by the Lieutenant Governor, Mr William Lennon with a large gathering out the front. The total cost of the hall was 564 pounds and 10 shillings, the building was debt free with the Ladies Auxiliary Committee raising the balance of funds required to erect the building. A ‘Queen Competition’ raised 300 pounds and augmented by various kinds of entertainment. Visit the Noosa Shire Museum to check out an impressive collection of photographs. It is great to see the Cooroy Rag up and running again. I look forward to providing regular updates on the all that is happening in and around the Nicklin Electorate. A big thank you to the hundreds of you who signed my petition for a new Police Station for Cooroy. I appreciate a petition is not a magic fix, but it does help me to highlight issues of importance to our local communities, issues that perhaps are not considered priorities by Government right now. I am delighted to say that tenders have just closed for the construction of our new and well overdue Police Station for Nambour. As a community we have rallied together to see that project progress and it is a good feeling to drive past the site and see some action. Hopefully, we can do the same for Cooroy. My office continues to receive many enquiries from Cooroy residents wanting updates on what TMR plan to do for safety upgrades to the dangerous Cooroy intersections. Despite it being over 9 months since TMR’s undertaking to keep the community and myself

updated on progress with this project – I have heard nothing. I delivered a Question on Notice to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads on 15 July requesting a timetable and plan for outcomes on this project. The response is due to me by 17 August at which time I will share it with the community. With COVID-19 restrictions easing, I have been getting back out on the road with my mobile offices. Please monitor my Facebook page for details of future mobile offices. If you have an issue large or small that is State related, I am always happy to help you. No need to wait for a mobile office either, my team are happy to make you an appointment to meet with me in the Nambour office (or I can come to you) whenever Parliament is not sitting – just give us a call (5406 4100). My wife Kelly and I had a great time on Saturday afternoon at the Belli Community Hall’s Christmas in July (postponed to August due to rain). A big thank you to Christine and her team on a great event. It is nice to see community events slowly coming back to life in a COVID safe way.

Queensland Seniors Week starts on Saturday (15-23 August). I normally host a Seniors Event in the electorate to celebrate he contribution seniors make in our community. Unfortunately, this will not be possible this year – but keep an eye on my Facebook page as we will be running a competition for Seniors Week with some great prizes. Marty

The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual general meeting at the Cooroy RSL and elected its new executive for the year ahead. Chaired by Councillor Tom Wegener, the meeting was well attended with a cross section of the Cooroy business community. Re-elected President, Chris Bell, gave a detailed account of the Chamber’s activities over the past twelve months which has been severely impacted by COVID-19. Various events

had been cancelled such as the Meet the Candidates night prior to the recent Council elections, their business networking night and the Australian Body Art Festival. All fell victims to the pandemic. Chris explained that over the past few months, the Chamber had been attending the Council’s Roundtable meetings that brought together the various business associations throughout the shire, including Tourism

Noosa, to chart a way through the unfamiliar and difficult times. In the process, this had highlighted the need for the Chamber to put a far greater emphasis on the business community. As a result, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is currently in the process of changing its focus with a view to concentrating its activities on supporting the local business community. This includes a new member platform that will, amongst other things, encourage greater business to business engagement. As part of its launch, the Chamber will be offering complimentary six months membership to all registered businesses within the 4563 postcode. If all goes to plan, then a significant increase in membership is anticipated and the more members that they can attract means the more they can share the load. Ultimately, the Chamber intends to become self-sufficient in order to give more back into the community without having to rely on sponsorships. In the current economic climate, these are going to be extremely difficult to find. For further details, go to www.cooroy.com.au or call Chris on 0412 043 843.

Little hearts can make a big difference

The Kindness Club have been doing their best to share happiness and kindness during these trying times. Early in the pandemic, the children delivered sweet treats to their neighbours' letterboxes with 'thinking of you' notes. To help keep their recipients safe, the

children used very thorough hand washing practices and chose packaging that could be wiped over. These letterbox surprises were little reminders that we are all in this together! Most recently, the children made 'pocket hugs,' beautifully decorated small wooden hearts, to send to family and friends. Although Kindness Club activities need to adapt to the current times, the club will continue coming up with new projects to share. Social distancing may keep us apart but kindness will keep us connected! Isolation can be tough. If you know of someone feeling lonely, please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com and we will pop a 'pocket hug' in the mail for them! “Little hearts can make a big difference”.

NDSHS gives back to firies Australia is known for devastating bushfires, and the last fire season was undoubtably the most difficult in many years, and the worst I have witnessed in my life. Although this community was relatively untouched, many of us had family or friends severely affected by the destruction. Personally, my childhood vacation spot in Moruya and Mogo, located in the Eurobodalla region of the NSW South Coast, was evacuated, including the Mogo Zoo. Unfortunately, many properties and shops were destroyed in Mogo, similar to several rural towns across Eurobodalla and other regions of NSW. This disaster did bring to light the con-

tribution to the community by our local fire services, especially during the fires of Peregian Beach and Peregian Springs, as well of those affecting Noosa North Shore and surrounding areas.

Because of this, Noosa District State High School raised $1200 for two of the local notfor-profit rural fire services – Black Mountain Rural Fire Services and the Federal QLD Rural Fire Services. $685 was donated by students on a Free Dress Day last month, and was then raised to a total of $1200 by the school’s Student Council. This donation was accepted by representatives on the school’s most recent formal parade. Although the money cannot express entirely how thankful we, as individuals and as a school, are for the work that the firefighters contribute to the community, especially during the last fire season, we hope that this donation can make a difference. Lauren Hall Student Council Secretary/Treasurer

Prep at CSPS Cooroy State School would like to extend a huge thank you to all our families and the wider community for your support during online learning. Who would have thought, that through a time of isolation, family and community relationships would be strengthened! Continuing on with building community relationships, it is very exciting to announce the start of the Prep Transition Program, welcoming future students into their new school. This year the school has engaged a Prep Transition Teacher, Mrs Courtney Cashen, who will be working within the school as well as local Early Learning Centres to ensure a smooth transition for students entering Prep in 2021 (children born

between 01/07/2015-30/06/16). Over the remainder of the year, the school will be hosting a variety of events where children and their families can come along and have some fun while engaging with both staff and students, and familiarising themselves with the school environment and way of working. In addition to this, school staff and older students will regularly visit Early Learning Centres to engage and interact with kindy students, building buddy relationships to further assist in a happy and successful transition. We look forward to welcoming all students and families into our school. To secure your place, please phone: 5472 2100

where are they now?

Couple loving life in Capella Newlyweds Garth and Kyla Harry graced the pages of Cooroy Rag back in 2009. The Cooroy Rag caught up with the former Cooroy locals to find out what’s changed for the Harry family in the 11 years since then. “We live in Capella now. We’ve been here eight years. “I work in childcare, I’m the director of the limited hours childcare facility in Capella while Garth works in the coal mine as an underground miner. “We have three children now instead of one. Jaxson, who was 10 months old when we were married is now 11, Oscar is 8 and Ryder, 3. “We’re pretty settled here in Capella. We own our house and the kids are doing well at school. “It’s a nice small community, a great place to bring up a family plus we have a pretty nice lifestyle, we go motorbike riding in winter, skiing in summer and lots of camping.”

Annie McDonald Glass Art Studio opens in Cooroy Well known glass artist Annie McDonald is opening her studio to the public. Starting Saturday August 22 at 10am, Annie’s studio on her property in Black Mountain will be open for browsing once a week and private appointments. Annie’s glass creations are functional and exhibition work. “I do glass slumping and fusing, making platters of various sizes, plates, condiment bowls, jewellery and exhibition work including larger fused glass pieces.” Her new Pate de Verre work, French for glass paste, she creates bowls and leaves of various designs in lead crystal glass. Annie started working with glass in 1985 when she lived in Mt Coolum. “I started leadlighting when a friend gave

me some leadlight windows to be repaired and I thought I would like to learn this, so it took a weekend workshop and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to accomplish the skills I have today. Then about 19 years ago, leadlighting wasn’t very popular anymore as people were into modern/contemporary homes and architectural glass, so I started experimenting with kiln fired glass work. “I travelled down the east coast of Australia selling my glassware face-to-face to galleries and shop owners, even my opalessence jewellery to Coober Peedy.’ After moving to Cooroy in 1990, so the family could live in the country, Annie opened a leadlight shop and gallery across the road from the Cooroy Butter Factory in 1996 and it became known as the ‘arty end

of town’. Annie was also the treasurer of the Cooroy Butter Factory for a few years and developed ‘The Gallery’ at the Butter Factory to help artists sell their work. “My studio is all set up, it is a working studio with a display area, I’m happy to explain the process of my glass work to visitors. “People can come and visit on Saturday mornings from 9am-12noon and most days by appointment.” As we are experiencing a COVID situation, if you would like to attend the opening at 10am Saturday 22 August, please call Annie 0407768516.

New personal pet cremation service There is a new business supporting pet owners in the hinterland. Mary Valley Pet Cremation provides a personalised pet cremation service from home or vet collection to delivery of ashes. Owner Matthias Lochthofen told the Cooroy Rag the business came about when a friend’s dog passed away. “When her Jack Russell died about two years ago, there was no cremation service that would do a home collection and it highlighted to me there was a need.” After spending 17 years working and travelling overseas, Matthias said he was looking for a home-based business opportunity. “Living and working abroad has had its challenges in many ways, the opportunity to find myself in an awkward or difficult situation because we don’t know the local rules, social preferred behaviour, or the appropriate gesture. The farewell of a friend and family member, even with four legs, it is sad and I remember my final say goodbye to my beloved Honey all so well. “We only started in December. Our pet cremation service is locally operating and locally owned. We’re nestled in the heart of the Mary Valley in Kandanga, operating each and every day. “Whenever or wherever we are there for them. I travel anywhere from Rainbow Beach to Peregian Beach and in the Hinterland from Kilkivan to Kenilworth.” Matthias said the response to their new business has been overwhelming. “My customers say they appreciate the care and detail and service I put in during their troubled time.” Striving to provide a more “personal pet cremation service”, Matthias said he’ll do anything to make the process easier on those grieving. “I once had the request to give their pet one last cuddle and tell them they love them and I do this.”

Matthias Lochthofen

A home collection is just one way he does this. ”We humans have a funeral service, animals don’t have this but with a home collection the owners can have not a ceremony but they can create their own service.” Providing an all exclusive (and all inclusive) package is another. “We have one package with three different prices, only depending on the size of the pet. With the return of the ashes from the individual cremation, the personalised cremation certificate with the paw print and a lock of fur and a free memorial post on our website which they can share with friends and family, I make everything in the package and don’t exclude anything and there are options to upgrade with brass urns and fine wooden boxes with or without photo window or a golden plaque.” For more information find ‘Mary Valley Pet Cremation’ on Facebook or phone Matthias on 0456 001 585 or visit their website: maryvalleypetcremation.com.au

String together your own custom guitar LOCAL luthier Gaz Walton has been making one-of-akind acoustic guitars for more than eight years. The Cooroy businessman told the Cooroy Rag since making his first guitar all those years ago, he has travelled the world learning the trade. “I did a course in Italy, spent time with luthiers in Sydney and Melbourne and have run guitar courses with the guys at Hancock Guitars in the Gold Coast.” Mr Walton said guitar making is all about switching off and using your hands to create something that will last forever. And now, anyone can do just that, through one of Mr Walton’s guitar making courses. “My guitars are flawless inside and out with attention to detail every step of the way. If you love wood work and guitars, you’ll love the course.” The course begins with participants accompanying mill owner Dave Linton, who has 50 years’ experie n c e w i t h t i m b e r, t o Maleny to hand pick the timber for their guitar. “ St u d e n t s a r e a b l e t o choose from a variety of Australian tone timbers.” Then, they go back to Mr Walton’s workshop and work with him every

step of the way “until they walk out of here with a finished guitar”. “My guitars are valued at $4000 and

they’ll walk out with a finished guitar at that level.” Mr Walton said working one day a week, the process to make a guitar usually takes up to seven months. “I spend 100 hours at least with each person to make their guitar. I’ve had ladies in their 60s, younger men and older guys. “Male or female, it is a good outlet to come and switch off and create something from scratch and any of my students will tell you, it is the one day of the week they’re most excited about.” The courses are held in Mr Walton’s workshop on his property at 7 Olivine Street, Cooroy with the assistance of his 17-year-old apprentice son, Sam “I’ve got a workshop on my property with a kitchen, bathroom and temperature-controlled room. It’s a really cool workshop, a nice place to hang out. “I do payment plans where people can pay weekly and come one day a week and we construct their guitar.” For more information on Mr Walton’s guitar making course and other services see www.waltonguitars.com

Cooroy RSL makes most of COVID Shutdown

Cooroy RSL found a productive way to pass the time while they where closed due to COVID19 restrictions. Rather than see the closure as a negative they took the opportunity to do extensive renovations on the club. The club is looking fresh, bright and welcoming with new floor coverings, paint, foyer and reception desk, an expansion and renovation to a bathroom and the gaming room and renovations to the bar, tables and chairs. The Cooroy RSL are following the Covid Industry Plan and have been excited to welcome back members and guests. Feedback on the renovations has been very positive. It’s the same great place to catch up with old friends or make new ones but it has had a full makeover. They have opened with all day dining on their full menu in both the ANZACs Restaurant and the Coffee Shop. They have brought back Bingo on Thursday mornings from 9am, Friday raffles from 5pm and Goose Club Raffles on Saturday from 1pm. As Covid restrictions continue to lift they will be implementing other promotions and entertainment. To make a booking or for more information give them a call on 5447 6131 or visit their website at cooroyrsl.com.au.

There will be no show for the Noosa Shire this year but a big one in 2021. The 111th Noosa Country Show was pushed from September to October due to COVID-19 but after much deliberation, the Noosa Show Society has decided to cancel the show entirely. Noosa Show Society president Charlie Pattison told the Cooroy Rag it was a pretty hard decision to make. “We held off as long as we could but really it was inevitable. “We were hoping the one-day show would have gone ahead in October because it would have been a good chance for people to get out and blow the cobwebs out from all this COVID business. “Cancelling also has an effect on other clubs, schools and organisations. “Pomona Tennis Club helps on the

gate, SES, Rotary, Lions and without a show there are no school exhibits, bands or choir. “But everyone has been very supportive of it being cancelled.” Mr Pattison said they are now working on next year’s show, which they’re planning to be “a bit different”. “As it sits now, we’re full steam ahead for next year. This gives us a couple of extra months to get what we need sorted, now. “We’re hoping for it to be a bit different. We’ve been upgrading the showgrounds, new grandstands, seating and if we can scrounge up enough money we’ll finish the lighting off.” The Noosa Show Society has received a grant to assist with installing lighting around the arena. Mr Pattison said the lighting will add another aspect to the show but they

need more money to see it finished. “We have a 50/50 grant but still need another $85,000. At the moment we can’t have anything in the arena because it is too dark. With the lighting, we’ll be able to add things in there at night.” While the caravan park keeps the society afloat during the year, the cancellation of the show has put a huge dent in their fundraising. “We’ve been working on getting lights here for a good 10 years. It will also be good for other events and the Pony Club as they’ll be able to have events at night in summer. “If anyone has a couple of dollars spare to throw in to the lighting fund, that would be nice.” At the moment, the 2021 Noosa Country Show will be held on September 11 and 12, 2021.

The popular Pomona Country Markets are now a weekly event as part of a three month trial granted by Noosa Council. Pomona Country Markets manager Jason Egan told the Cooroy Rag the trial, which started on July 1 and will end on September 30, was at the request of stall holders. “There was also much confusion with our customers and even stall holders as to which Saturday the market was open. I'm aware of some stall holders turning up on the wrong day. “I want the market to be embraced, enhanced and continuous for the stallholders and the community.” “The market has been reconfigured by

running the stalls in one aisle. This enables a customer to peruse down the left and come back down the right or vice versa. It also runs the market down into the trees providing wonderful shade for all during the hottest days.” At the end of the three months, Mr Egan said they have to take surveys from local businesses and customers and provide Noosa Council with the feedback. “The trial is really to assess the impact on local businesses. But personally, I can’t see why the weekly market won’t continue. I would expect that the local cafes and other retailers enjoy the benefit of extra visitors. shop @ a Pomona is abuzz every store with Saturday.” Currently, the market has a door stalls of providers from all over Shop Local the Sunshine Coast. “From seedlings to fresh produce, our market is 95 per 4 Memorial Ave Pomona ph: 5485 1922 cent local to the Sunshine

We have a lamb stall holder every two weeks who comes from Murgon. “Mary Valley Harvest Co Op bring a diverse range of fruit and veg and rumour has it, they have discovered a yummy sourdough baker to include in their product range. “Henry, a long-time stall holder has live poultry for those who want fresh egg layers. “Then we have several local fresh produce stalls, a coffee cart and other stalls selling seedlings, fruit trees and brick-a-brac.” Subject to availability, the markets are also a stage for local professional musos. Mr Egan is encouraging market goers to bring a picnic rug and enjoy some quality live music in the sunshine. The Pomona Country Markets are held every Saturday morning in Stan Topper Park from 7am to 11.30am until September 30, 2020.

pomona Eco retreat ready for business For two-and-a-half years, Nick and Danae Barnes have been working tirelessly to make their vision of an eco-retreat in Pomona into a reality. After buying 135 acres at the base of Mount Cooroora in a “leap of faith”, the couple, originally from Melbourne, have done nearly everything themselves; from regenerating the land, including planting 500+ new trees, to building six fully self-contained ecofriendly yurts. Mrs Barnes told the Cooroy Rag it has been a labour of love. “When you own land, you want to be a part of safeguarding it for the future. We’ve planted trees, installed native bee hives and are members of Land for Wildlife, Landcare and Wildlife SEQ. “When it came to accommodation, we could have built anything here but we knew it needed to complement the land. What we wanted was something that had a light footprint and wouldn’t impact the landscape. The yurts are elevated above the natural slopes and are made mostly out of sustainably sourced materials.” There are six yurts spread across two separate sites, surrounded by natural bushland and with Mount Cooroora looming behind them. Each yurt is 50m2 with a four-metre high ceiling and a skylight and windows that bring the outside in. Open plan, there is a separate bathroom, a kitchenette and lounge and bedroom zone with a king bed or twin set up. “The yurts are made out of bamboo and recycled aluminium so there is a lightness and openness to them. “We deliberately chose the colours to

We love Pomona. It has a sense of community where you feel like you’re part of something bigger than your own lives.” Follow the Noosa Eco Retreat on Facebook for more info: https:// w w w . f a c e b o o k . c o m / Noosaecoretreat/ complement the landscape around. They’re not an eyesore, they look like they belong,” Mrs Barnes said. Mr Barnes said the interiors have been styled around sustainability and repurposing. “All the timber has come from the land and we’ve used recycled Colorbond roofing. There is a story behind most of the things we’ve used and the result is a very bespoke and hopefully unique experience. We think people will love them.” Water is supplied by rainwater harvested from the carport and waste is dealt with by the most advanced, less obtrusive septic systems available. From the beginning, the Barnes’ had a vision to create a business where couples or friend groups can immerse themselves in nature, feel connected and enjoy being grounded. “The yurts allow people to do that and have an experience not just a stay.” The official opening of Noosa Eco Retreat has changed due to various delays and COVID, but now the Barnes’

Who cares for the carer? A small group of carers have started to meet on the third Monday in the month for a chat over a cuppa at the Pomona Community House for a couple of hours from 10am. We are in our infancy, and would welcome input from other carers. Many carers don't feel they need a friendly, non judgemental ear to talk and listen to but for some reason, we often "burn out" long before the person we care for. Maybe being with other carers, enjoying some supportive social interaction will ease your cares away. A small donation of $3 to the Community House will cover morning tea. The 2020 Noosa Council budget has delivered the addition of upgrades for cultural sites like the Pomona Memorial School of Arts and Railway Gallery, new pathways along Station Street and Subway Avenue together with the completion of walking and cycle paths across the railway lines, and sealing of Ambulance Street. Two-thirds of Noosa road surface projects this year are in the Noosa hinterland with $2.7 million set aside to resurface hinterland roads, and a further $410,000 for gravel road resheeting. The capital works program also has seen a significant hinterland focus with 12 projects identified in Pomona. “When I decided to run for Noosa Council last year, I made a commitment to people in the hinterland that I would be their voice at the table and do my utmost to secure infrastructure” The arduous campaign has honed in every respect elements of focus, empathy and self discipline which is exercised daily in the current role.” Declaration of Office on 15th April 2020 after having run a rigorous campaign and subsequently elected as Noosa Councillor, Karen Finzel was officially sworn into office.

out and about “Happy Birthday”

Celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss

Happy second birthday to the girls at Cooroy Countrywear - Giddyup! Cooroy lovebirds Lyla and Rod Dreise recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The pair were joined by 65 family and friends at Cooroy RSL on August 15 to celebrate the milestone. When asked the secret to their long and happy marriage, Rod joked he learned to say “yes dear” early on, while Lyla said, “I said, ‘I’ll never leave

you Rod, I couldn’t bear to see you happy’”. It’s clearly worked because the couple, now in their 70s, have been married three times. “I was 18 and Rod, 17 when we first got married in Brisbane. He’s my toy boy,” Lyla said. While Rod said, “She took one look at me and couldn’t resist.” They then renewed their wedding vows twice. “A catholic priest was having a party for couples married for more than 30 years. There were 40 or so couples there and he renewed all our vows at once and we renewed our vows again on our 50th anniversary.” The couple have eight children, 28 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, some of whom grew up in the area after the Dreise’s bought their family property on Ferals Road in 1989. Rod and Lyla also share a love for old cars. “I had a 1939 Chevy when we met with the number plate NAT898. We have another 1939 Chevy now and I managed to get the same plate as a personalised plate.” Congratulations, Rod and Lyla.

health & wellbeing From Cooroy Ambulance Hello and welcome back to the Cooroy Rag! I’m pleased to be contributing to a new column about Cooroy Ambulance Station and the Cooroy and District Local Ambulance Committee. Our station has a mixture of paramedics and Patient Transport Officers (PTOs) working rotational shifts to provide 24hr care to our community. With three ambulances, one patient transport vehicle and one rapid emergency response vehicle, we are well resourced and trained to support emergency care. For this debut column, I am going to explain how you can become a paramedic – as it’s one of the most common questions I am asked – and I will describe some of the different roles within the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). All paramedics in Australia are now registered health professionals under the same national governance as doctors, dentists and nurses amongst others. To become a paramedic in the QAS, you need to undertake a three-year degree at a recognised university before employment into a graduate position where you then undertake a range of training before final assessments to become an Advanced Care

Paramedic (ACP). ACPs staff most ambulances you see around the state and can manage non-urgent and emergency cases using a variety of skills and pharmacology. After a few years working as a paramedic, some officers may then choose to undertake post-graduate study in critical care (normally a master’s degree) before applying to join the QAS Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) program which is another year of study, practical learning and clinical simulations. QAS CCPs are trained to attend the most critical cases. Some of our CCPS have specialist roles, such as those who work on a rescue helicopter. Other roles we have include PTOs who complete on-the-job vocational training to certificate III/IV level to manage inter-facility transports of non-urgent patients and highlevel support to frail, elderly and unwell persons between medical appointments and facilities. Another important role in our organisation is the Emergency Medical Dispatcher. These highly trained officers answer Triple Zero (000) calls and provide pre-ambulance first aid advice and dispatch ambulance resources. Remember if you have an injury or illness that is serious or life threatening, always call Triple Zero (000). Until next time, stay safe. Ben Phipps, Officer in Charge and Critical Care Paramedic at Cooroy Station, QAS

Tattoist’s gift to cover up self-harm scars Hinterland tattooist Nerida Nicolson is offering free tattoos to cover up self-harm scars. The mum-of-two told the Cooroy Rag it is all about giving. “I had a particularly healing experience with one of my clients. She was covering up a tattoo linked to a part of her past that she wanted to leave behind. I realised that I could use tattooing to help people move forward with their lives.” Ms Nicolson said she had her first client book in for their free cover-up at the end of July. “She was so thankful and lovely and it was just a nice experience. It was incredibly rewarding being able to give that gift to her.” “Tattooing is what I do for work but it doesn’t always have to be about money.” After relocating from Sydney a year ago, where she was a tattooist for more than eight years, Ms Nicolson recently opened a private studio on her 25 acre property in Kin Kin, working afternoons and weekends around her two small children. The vegan tattooist, who describes her style as botanical and decorative, has created a safe and inclusive studio to create tattoos in. “Everything in the studio is vegan from the inks to the soaps and everything in the process.” The studio will dedicate one day a month to free self-harm cover-ups. “I am doing one day a month where I

Because we care - pharmacy health checks At LiveLife, we care about your health, looking at your body and your health conditions holistically to ensure you can be the best version of yourself possible. One way that we do this is by offering many different types of “health checks” in our pharmacies, many of them free to you and with no appointment required. If you weren’t aware of these health checks, here is a little information on a few of them: Medscheck – this is a quick ‘in-pharmacy’ review of your medicines, focusing on education and self-care, in addition to information on how to best use and store your medicines. Diabetes Medscheck – these reviews are similar to the ones above, but are specifically tailored to the needs of our type 2 diabetics, their medicines and the complications often associated with the condition and how to avoid them. HMR (Home Medication Review) – this is a more thorough review available to you through referral from your GP. One of our accredited pharmacists can then visit you in the comfort of your own home to optimise understand-

ing and the quality use of medicines. Blood Pressure check – our pharmacists can assess your blood pressure anytime and also have the ability to “map” your results over a period of time using our computer software, then providing an overview to your GP when needed. Cholesterol check – we can do a general lipid level check to assess whether you are need referral to the GP. Blood glucose check – worried about your blood glucose level and want the pharmacist to do a quick skin ‘prick?’ No worries. Asthma inhaler technique – did you know that almost nine out of 10 people don’t use their inhaler devices correctly? We can perform a quick 2.5 minute education to check your technique. COPD check – Lung function screening can be conducted by our pharmacists, with information and a referral for your GP if needed. So visit us today and ask your LiveLife pharmacist what health checks they can do to help you be your best. Life – let us help you LIVE it.

Tall Trees 360 Art Exhibition 2020

Veteran KOM runner, Coe Vines and several others competed in an unofficial race on the last Sunday of July, after the official KOM event was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Pomona local told the Cooroy Rag it was a great afternoon with a good bunch of people and lots of laughs. “I got to run with my daughter Samantha and my son, Jesse, who was celebrating his 10th run. Matt Golinski, Cody Moulder, Dan King and another bloke walking past joined us,” Mr Vines said. For Mr Vines this year was his 25th consecutive run, a milestone that was acknowledged by many, even if it wasn’t official. “As I ran down the hill, a couple and their child clapped me on and at the finish, Barry Stewart from the Lions Club was there to shake my hand, which was nice. Then afterwards we all kicked back with a beer in the rotunda.” While it wasn’t timed, the masters’ runner said he thinks he did it “around the 38 minutes mark”. Because time wasn’t as important as Mr Vines matching the record of 25 runs

set by Norm Haywood. “It was nice to catch Norm this year, unofficially,” Mr Vines said. The now 58-year-old ran his first KOM race in 1996 as a then 33year-old and said he has a few more years left in him. “I’ve always had 30 years in my mind. I wish I started a bit earlier now though so I could have got a few more up my sleeve.” Mr Vines said he is looking forward to the official KOM event returning next year. “It is a great day. Very special for the town.”

Big plans for the Cooroy Community Gardens Brett Grimley from Ecolibrium Designs met with Tom Kendall, Janet Millington, Latha Matters and Sandra Guy to design and plan the location of a new shelter to be built within the Cooroy Community Gardens in Emerald Street Cooroy. The shelter and the gardens will be a beautiful green space for community connection and education as part of Permaculture Noosa. All weather community events, classes and harvest swap will be held regularly at the gardens. It will be a space for all ages. From very young children who can enjoy learning how to grow food and play in the gardens to the elderly who can come and just sit and enjoy it. The aim is to raise funds and have the shelter built by Christmas.

FOR Taylor Moss, waking to find her single Don’t Let Me Let Go had hit number one on iTunes overnight in June was a shock. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter told the Cooroy Rag it takes a lot of pre-orders for that to happen. “You have to get a lot of pre-orders to get on the list. The fact that I made it means people like my work and as an artist this all you want, to be valued and supported.” The Tewantin based songstress, who is big in the country pop genre, has in the past, had two other singles in the radio charts for more than 25 weeks. Ms Moss said country pop is a subgenre with real, raw lyrics and popular elements. “Country pop has lyrical elements about real life and things that happen and popular elements like production, sound and melody. It is still descriptive but with a more relatable story line.” When it comes to inspiration for story lines for her popular songs, Ms Moss said she draws experience from her life and real experiences. “I write about life experiences and what people can relate to. Love is something all people can relate to; heartbreak, happiness but also love for family, friends and the things you love to do.” Since her first performance at age 12 in the Cooroy Hall with Bob Abbot for an Australia Day ceremony, Ms Moss has been performing her songs to packed venues around the Sunshine Coast. Of course, the recent coronavirus pandemic put an end to the live performances but Ms Moss said she enjoyed the downtime. “It gave me time to think, rebrand and I’ve written heaps of new songs.” Ms Moss spent the end of July recording this new material that is a reformation of her brand. The independent artist, who supports herself 100 per cent, described it as “spicing things up a little bit”. The new content will be available on all the streaming platforms. Follow Taylor Moss on social media to find release dates.

Take a seat and cheer on the Wombats! As local sport begins to return to a new normal, there’s been news welcomed by Cooroora United Football Club. A longtime sponsor of the club has delivered on a promise that will transform how local fans can watch the game. The Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank added to the decade long list of projects by helping the club purchase two mobile grandstands to seat the club faithful at home games. Club president, Tony McCarthy said the structures are a brilliant asset for CUFC. “The season is only a week old and we’re excited to be all together again until November. These grandstands are the latest sign of our club’s increasing strength and commitment to improving facilities for our loyal members and visitors alike,” Tony shared. “They’re another small representation of an evolving, long-term plan for the Wombats and our place within the Hinterland community. We simply couldn’t have done

this without Bendigo Bank’s wonderful support and we’re delighted at the backing they continue to show our club. They’ll allow a place to sit, relax and enjoy some football in a family friendly environment,”

Noosa Pirates relaunch season 2020 A belated restart to the 2020 Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League season got underway recently at the spiritual home of the mighty Noosa Pirates, Christensen Oval Cooroy. Despite wet weather and new entry protocols, that didn’t deter the game faithful who braved the elements to watch the mighty Noosa Pirates in four great Junior games, including our Under 16 girls team in action. Club President Greg Christensen confirmed, “It’s great to finally get our teams back on the field in what has been, and continues to be a very testing year for the club. While our team performances have been very promising, the big winners really are the players who can finally get out, play some footy and have fun. And we couldn’t have done it without our club sponsors who have remained with us through this crisis.” “Unfortunately though there is no Senior comp this year, however U18’s are playing in the Junior competition this year. So our club focus is now on Junior teams but we will need a lot of volunteer help to get us over the line.” Fixtures for the Pirates this season will revert between the Cooroy and Tewantin

with a host action from U6’s to U18’s. Games will continue til mid-October, so there is still time for players to register. Just head to www.playrugbyleague.com. See you at the game…Aarrghh!

he said. The glue that holds the club together is the work of so many great volunteers who assist the hard-working committee in getting many teams out there enjoying their football. Joining some of the

teams before training last week was Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branch manager, Samantha Atholwood. She said Bendigo Bank is delighted to be supporting the club for the 2020 season. “We’ve been proud sponsors for many years - from helping purchase club strips to the free Cooroora United app, and now these great new grandstands. We’re here to support those who support us by choosing to bank with us. It’s something we all love being part of,” Samantha said. “The club is filled with so many great locals and you can feel the family atmosphere every time you come here. We wish all the teams a great season once the green light is given for the games to be played. Go the Wombats!” she concluded. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au. Media enquiries: Ian Williams - 0437 017 835

Keeping women in ‘touch’

Coolum Touch located in the Peregian Springs Recreation Centre is going to great lengths to encourage women into enjoying the benefits of playing touch football. President Peter Feldman said getting women to play touch football and be involved in sport was a major focus of the club prior to COVID-19 but was even more important now. The loneliness and social isolation caused by COVID-19 is bad for everyone’s health & well-being, not just women, and research shows that playing sport helps people to bond with one another and contribute to happiness. Touch football is the ideal team sport to break from isolation and reconnect to the outside community. These social benefits are just as important, if not more so, than the physical activity and health benefits that touch footy offers. It is a cheap, mini-

mal contact sport with a comprehensive level of insurance enjoyed by people of all ages and varying levels of fitness. It is also a great family sport and one of the only sports Mums and Dads can play with their children. Our ladies competition is played on Tuesday evening between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and is enjoying a resurgence after struggling for a few seasons. We are always looking for more women players and teams and doing what we can to encourage women to our sport. We are able to offer free registration fees to ladies wanting to join and play touch footy with us this season thanks to our sponsors Always Cool, Sunny Coast Accountants and our State Member, Dan Purdie. Any ladies interested in joining should email the club at coolumtouch@gmail.com or telephone Peter Feldman on 0417793460.

Eumundi Dragons match reports August 2020 from the first half to keep the win. The Best Team Mate was awarded to Will Sparks who seemed to be in everything, tackling well and applying pressure. Another strong week Dragons – keep it up.

U8 match report by Team Manager Jero Mansell The Eumundi Dragons U8’s played an awesome game in damp conditions at the home of the Gympie Hammers. Excellent support play was a strength again this week on top of some improving tackling and ball protection. Quil, Finn & Tristan lead the way on tackling bringing down a number of Saints players. Hunter, Jack & Zac made some great runs around the edges and through the middle with CJ Delivering a player of the day per-

Photos by Leo Wiles formance in support, stealing the ball and Making some great passes. Well done Dragons!

Cooroy Pony Club members competed at Pomona Gymkhana on 2nd August. Over 140 riders from around 12 different clubs competed. Cooroy came 2nd in the March past and many riders came home in the top four for their age groups.

U9s Vs Saints by Team Manager Andrew Hillhouse The Eumundi Dragons under 9 team continues to improve and develop. The had a hard fought win against Saints in Gympie on Saturday. The whole ream stepped up this week with very ferocious work in the rucks and mauls by Josh V, Jett D, Josh K , Ted W and George H. Many times the dragons would come out with the ball resulting in some strong close running by Josh, Josh and Jasper. When the ball went a bit wider and George H, Josh V , Tristan Y ,Brooklyn and Aiden H would make breaks around and through the opposition. Trys were scored both in tight and out wide. Passing and ball skills also improved from last week. This week our defense was much stronger with many tackles made by every member of the team at times holding the opposition out meters from the try line for numerous phases. There were some heroic try saving tackles by Aiden and Tristan on much bigger players and it

was great to see Aiden run almost the full length of the field to catch and tackle a runaway Saints player. Many thanks to Tristan and Jack for running on after the U8s game to play a full game for the U9s. Player of the week this week goes to Aiden for showing great spirit and bravery and always backing up. Also great to see the team acknowledge each others efforts. U11 Match Report by Team Manager Pamela Campbell-Jones The Dragons met Noosa Red at Gympie on Saturday for another grinding game of rugby. The Reds started well earning plenty of possession and though the Dragons were working hard making plenty of tackles, the scoreboard was in Noosa’s favour. The second half saw the Dragons with more possession and playing well as a team. They certainly won the second half with some impressive strong runs and good team tries, though Noosa had enough of a lead

A familiar face, more great service Jen joined the Ray White Rural Eumundi team just weeks before COVID-19 started to shut everything down but that didn’t stop her from getting her first sale early June with a 10/10 for her service by the buyers Jess and Jack: “Jen was just fantastic to deal with at all points in the process. She was honest, open and genuine in all interactions we had with her. I can’t tell you how much we appreciated her input and guidance through the process. We have bought and sold a few properties now and have dealt with a number of agents. Jen was one of the most professional and considerate that we have come across. We are thrilled with our new home and can’t speak highly enough of our experience with Jen and Ray White Eumundi.” And sellers Sarah and Jared: “Thanks Jen, it is such an exciting time! We could not be happier and are so thankful to you and Vicki for all your hard work.” Jen’s career in real estate
