Not My Fave!

I WAS sitting around having a few drinks with friends last night when my daughter made the mistake of asking us if we knew what Pythagoras Theorem was. Some of our suggestions: “A cocktail made with crème de menthe”. “A prophet who predicted the end of the world”. “A flying horse”. “An Indian who fell in love with a white settler”. Apparently we weren’t very helpful and she retreated back to the cave from whence she came. But it did liven up our little party. How long would it take for civilisation to recover if some world catastrophe occurred and we were the only ones who survived? Should we study up on Pythagoras Theorem? What exactly would we use it for? So what should we be studying to help us survive? Even though we knew what a wheel was, would we actually be able to build one, and what would we attach it to if we could. I could draw a picture of a car in the dirt, but the details of what’s under the bonnet would be a little sketchy. So I guess I should start studying mechanics? Not to mention electricity making. Sometimes I think that’s made out of water, sometimes coal, maybe nuclear ... Time to hit the books. Does anyone know how to make a Panadol? So there you have it … Pythagoras, Pegasus and Pocahontas First world leader conference at my place … not my fave!

Will the Egg by Unscrambled Here we go again, the movement for a separate Noosa Shire, The rhetoric and the temperature are beginning to get higher, They seem to be demanding now, no way do they intend to beg, As they polish their plan to unscramble the Sunshine Council egg. They tell us the plan’s so good, it simply cannot fail, (Like all plans of course, the devil is in the detail). It’s going to be an exercise fraught with heat and doubt, But they claim they have the strategy thoroughly worked out. Cost of establishment will be minimal, so the planners say, And Noosa Shire residents will have nothing extra to pay. Staff levels will be low, Council standards will be high, Leaders will be young and passionate, keen to satisfy. It seems the whole success depends on the next election, Though there is no guarantee the result will give a new direction. “Once upon a time,” used to be the way fairytales began, Now they start, “If you elect me I’ll see you get your plan”. All in all it seems life in greater Noosa will be nice, A really pleasant place, a local government paradise. Will the Shire become a nature sphere bionic, And fill the dreams with planners a tourist mecca iconic. Time will tell if Noosa will be a modern Camelot, Or a Hastings Street visitors crowded parking lot. We’ll have to wait and see, but I hate to be Doubting Thomas, As we wonder if the pollies will be sure to keep their promise.

One would trust these grand ideas will include the hinterland. And the emphasis is not just on restaurants, on surf and golden sand. The country folk are as much a part of the beautiful Sunshine Coast, They have more attractions, a lifestyle others cannot boast. We may discover some new factors, unfortunately unplanned, Which will be explained in a fashion you probably won’t understand. It’s certain there’ll be problems a lot of “Ifs and buts”. But you can be sure the populace is going to be driven nuts. Jim Dunstan

news Community Gardens opening in Cooroy MAKE sure your breakfast plans on 1 May include the Cooroy Community Gardens at Mill Place. Between the Butter Factory Arts Centre and the Pottery, you will find good food, great people and a significant gardening celebrity for the grand opening of the Cooroy Community Gardens. The special guest for the official opening is Costa, the renowned gardening guru! Costa is well known for his infectious character, green wisdom and passion for gardening. The festivities kick off from 8am and you will get the chance to be part of the first diggings that take place at the site. Bring your gardening gloves and tools as we prepare the first garden bed and create a banana circle. There will be a number of activities for kids, pavers to write on and bamboo trellises to make. We will be selling seedlings of all varieties and there are so many people in the group with organic gardening expertise that it’s a prime opportunity to come down and talk about what goes on in your own vegetable garden. Need to talk about soil health, pest management, compost making, growing paw paws, fertilising pumpkins? You name it and we’ll talk about it! It’s also a chance for you to review the plans for the gardens. We have a wonderful design for them that includes pathways, herb spirals, a tool shed and shade house. If you would like to see what the plans are, and provide your feedback, we would love to see you at the gardens from 8am on Sunday 1 May. COOROY RAG

A big shout out to creative fashionistas CALLING all fashionistas! It’s time to start planning your creations and get your early bird entry forms in for the 2011 Wearable Art competition at the Australian Body Art Carnivale. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the Wearable Art competition will be held on Sunday 15 May, giving textile artists and designers the opportunity to have their creations grace the catwalk and be in the running for over $2000 in cash and prizes. “The Wearable Art competition presents a truly unique opportunity for artists and designers of all ages and levels of experience to express their individuality,” Danielle says. “And the challenge is to create garments from recycled materials or items that have had a “life” before”. “It’s a brilliant opportunity to really think outside the square and let your imagination run wild. In previous years’ competitions, we’ve seem everything from bubble wrap to umbrellas to bottle tops as key

design elements. The theme for all of the competitions at the Australian Body Art Carnivale is MAGIC, and we’re excited to see how that will be interpreted when it comes to wearable art,” says Danielle. Sunshine Coast TAFE Fashion Design Teacher Amanda Knights is encouraging her final year students to enter this year’s competition. “The Wearable Art competition presents a great opportunity for fledgling designers of all ages to express themselves,” says Amanda. “It’s an opportunity to be as outlandish and edgy as they like, with a wonderful recycled sustainability message underpinning the event”. Entrants can either create their design independently, or team up with others to create a work of Wearable Art. Wearable Art designs do not have to be practical or commercially viable, but they must be WEARABLE. Registrations are now open for all Aus-

tralian Body Art Carnivale competitions (full body art, face painting, pavement art, vehicle body art, wearable art and photography). Visit www.australianbodyart.com.au for more info, competition registration, and to sign up to receive eNewsletters. Alternatively, phone Event Manager Danielle Taylor on 0403 023 802. The Australian Body Art Carnivale is a free non-for profit event thanks to the generosity of its funding partners – Eumundi Chamber of Commerce; Eumundi Combined Community Organisation; Eumundi and District Community Association; the Eumundi and District Historical Association; Eumundi Square; APN; Snazaroo Face Paints; Zinc 96.1FM, Firefly Solutions; Avant Card; McDonalds; Tourism Noosa; Festivals Australia; and Sunshine Coast Regional Council (assisted through the grants program).

Wrap up of the clean up

LOCAL Clean Up Australia Day co-ordinator Joe Jurisevic wishes to extend a big thank you to the 481 volunteers who braved damp conditions to help Clean Up our part of Australia on Sunday March 6th. Volunteers were out in Pomona, Cooroy, Eumundi, Boreen Point and along the Coast

from Teewah to Peregian Beach. Numbers were boosted by several new sites this year and 150 volunteers from Noosa Nippers. However, volunteers were scarce at some other sites. The success of the day was highlighted by the 3 tonnes of garbage collected filling around 60 cubic metres

in skips located across the region, plus 2 car bodies removed from our State Forests. A mighty effort for just 3 hours work, but unfortunately showing that some people still have little regard for our streets, creeks, rivers and bushland. This year, several dump sites were cleaned up, and a number of others lo-

cated, most noticeably in bushland along Ringtail Ck Rd. Items collected included several mattresses, household furniture, fridges, freezers, tyres, bikes, builders rubble and countless bottles, cans takeaway wrapping. One item that stood out was the number of community newspapers left unwanted on properties and roads or washed down into local creeks. The volume of recycleable items collected was disappointing, especially large items such as mattresses and whitegoods which can be recycled at local waste facilities. All volunteers that participated went into the draw for prizes donated each year by The Noosa Sheraton Resort & Spa. This year ’s winners were Graeme Rogers, who wins a night’s Accommodation at the Shera-

Must Act Fast! ton, and Kerry Cooke, who wins a dinner for 2 at Catos Restaurant on Hastings St. Special thanks also to Sunshine Coast Council, C l e a n a w a y , Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, McDonalds Noosaville, Noosa Aquatic Centre, CSP Hire, Image On and Noosa T Shirts for regularly supporting the efforts of the community in Clean Up Australia Day. Also thanks to all the Community Groups that get involved such as Noosa Rotary & Lions clubs, Noosa Sea Scouts, Noosa Dive Club, Noosa Coast Guard, Sunshine Coast 4WD club, NPA, NICA, Bushland Care Groups & Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club. I am looking forward to having many more community groups goining us next year. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact NICA on 5449 9650.

Kandanga residents concerned about proposed piggery A RECENTLY lodged application for a free range piggery in the range of 400 pig standard pig units (SPU) which in this case equates to approximately 558 pigs, with plans for expansion at Sterling Rd, Upper Kandanga has raised concerns with local Kandanga residents. Gympie Regional Council will need to determine if this activity complies with the Intensive Animal Industry Code and ensure that it meets the Environmental Protection Act requirements. Pig keeping is an environmentally relevant activity (ERA) as piggeries can cause harm to the environment and humans’ health. The application has been lodged with council and will be referred to other government agencies including Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI). Lizette Phillips, a local resident said “The piggery proposal on the 53 ha property does not meet a number of the conditions of the intensive animal industry code including a size requirement of 100 ha for this number of pigs. Separation buffers are required from water ways like Mitchell Creek and Kandanga Creek, neighbours and ecologically significant areas.”

Dr Lucy Robson

Dr Eve Bevan

“The application has not even acknowledged Mitchell Creek as a waterway despite it being identified on the Gympie Council Overlay map and the separation buffers are not able to be met.” “Pigs excrete about 3 times more waste than humans. This proposal will need to manage the equivalent of a town with 1200 residents waste. “To say it isn’t going to smell and pollute our waterways is ridiculous.” Kandanga Township and other land holders along the creek draw their water from Kandanga Creek which will be at a very high risk of becoming polluted from pig excrement. “Suggestions that pigs can be rotated around paddocks and crops/pasture grown to take up all the excrement on such a small area without even an irrigation licence is not practical,” she said. “We do not have any personal issue with pigs, free range farming or any agricultural pursuits. We agree with the need for intensive agriculture in appropriate locations, with appropriate management systems, and on sites that comply with the communities preagreed standards for setbacks and buffers e.g. the Council and State Planning Codes.”

Joan says thanks WELL, what a proud little old chook I am that the ‘Keep our Local Heroes Afloat’ fundraising concert was such a success. People came from far and wide, even a bus load from Gympie, to enjoy the day. As you know, it was for the SES and local Red Cross to assist the Queensland flood victims. Thanks to all, and many thanks to our local RSL Club for supplying the venue, kitchen and bar staff. Also thanks to the sponsors and to the artists who performed and kept us on our toes. Also the professional artists from Warwich, Maryborough and Beaudesert. We raised $3000 which was divided between the SES and Red Cross. It was a huge effort, but once again, thanks to all the folk who helped on the day to make it such a success. Almost 200 people attended. I’m proud to be an Aussie and help the community of Cooroy, ‘cause it’s a great one. Raffle prize winners: 1st Joyce Cunningham (quilt), 2nd Judy Franklin (BBQ), 3rd Ron Sutton (basket of goodies).

INSURANCE - it’s surely been one of the hottest topics at workplaces and around coat dinner tables in recent months. Even though we seem to have seen and read about more devastation than ever before, it’s time to take stock. As we are all painfully aware, we’ve seen the power of Mother Nature on full show for some months now, and unfortunately it’s also seen everyone in the Pacific Rim diving for our insurance policies to check that we’re covered for the unthinkable. The danger in all this is to become complacent about insurance and ignore the signs of protecting yourself, your business and your home. These seemingly endless series of tragic events have left many coast residents jaded and wary of what their insurance covers them for and perhaps apprehensive about taking out policies for themselves of their

business. Now, more than ever, it’s time to remember there is more to an insurance policy than just having a cheap premium. If you have a current policy, make sure you do take those extra few minutes to check what you’re covered for, and if in any way it’s unclear to you, call and ask for clarification on anything you’re unsure of. It would seem there has never been a better time for us all to think about how we can better protect our own assets. It’s also important to make sure we have a quality product and the sum insured is sufficient to replace any loss. If new items have been purchased for the home or business such as furniture or electrical items, remember to increase the contents amount. Don’t forget all the fixed items that are classed as buildings, especially if you have recently completed

improvements or renovations. Special valuables may need to be listed individually and a valuation held as evidence. It is also recommended to keep photos of your special items. Please take time out to spend just a few minutes checking your insurance policies or look into purchasing one. If you would like to discuss anything to do with your personal insurance needs or those for your home or business please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigo bank.com.au.

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington SCHOOL and sporting clubs achieve funding: It is great to see Noosa District High, the Cooroy RSL and Cooroy Golf Club have all been successful with recently-announced State Government sporting and education grants. Noosa District High has achieved funding for a canteen upgrade and cafe classroom project at the school which will be of great benefit for students and our broader community. The RSL and Golf Club have both been successful with their grant applications through State sporting grants. The Cooroy RSL will now be able to employ a local coordinator to provide invaluable support for several sporting clubs in the Cooroy and Noosa district. The Cooroy Golf Club will use its grant for repairs to the course caused by flooding. Powerline proposals to be reviewed: In Parliament recently I met with representatives from the Energy Sector Monitoring Unit and from the State Government Department of Energy regarding the proposed Woolooga to West Cooroy powerline. At this meeting I presented the latest submission from the PAGE action committee, and I received an assurance from the Energy Sector Unit’s representative that these matters would be thoroughly investigated. The representative has assured me that the matters I raised at the last sittings of Parliament on behalf of PAGE were already being investigated. While I have been advised that this unit does not have the power to investigate scheduled timeframes regarding the proposed new powerline, representatives directed me to the Australian Energy Regulator, which is currently pursuing a similar matter on request of another Queensland local government council. As a result of this information, I have asked the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to become similarly involved in this matter. I raised concerns from the community regarding the ability of this unit to independently investigate the

Powerlink proposal. I was provided with examples of the unit’s independence, and assured that this unit is made up of professionals, including solicitors and accountants. I was advised the unit has the capacity to hire expert professionals to investigate matters where necessary. I left the meeting feeling confident that this unit will thoroughly investigate the issues raised by PAGE, and will not simply rubber stamp the Powerlink proposal. Environment debate raises Coast land issues: In Parliament during the Environmental Protection and Other Acts Amendment Bill debate, I took the opportunity to raise land and environmental issues surrounding the effects of the Governments northern pipeline development through the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland communities. I have called for a meeting between LinkWater (northern pipeline project group), Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the local action group (KADAG) regarding environmental offsets to compensate for environment and land damages caused by this project. I have put on the Parliamentary record that our community wants to see LinkWater purchase Council land at Kulangoor (purchased initially by Council to build a dump), as an environmental offset. I understand this was the proposal on the initial approval for this pipeline project. We need to make sure that the land set aside for the environmental offset to compensate for the damage caused by the pipeline is in the immediate area affected by the pipeline project. I believe that the purchase of this site would be of significant benefit to our community by linking two national parks (on either side of the pipeline corridor). Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, April 14, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933.

TRIVIA In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase ... “Goodnight, sleep tight”.

news Kerbside offenders urged to adhere BRING in your bin or get stuck with the consequences. That’s the warning from Sunshine Coast Council to businesses and residences that repeatedly leave their ‘wheelies’ where they shouldn’t be. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said stickers would be placed on bins that were consistently left on the kerbside well after collection. “Council has received a flood of complaints from the community about bins being left in the street long after collection day or even permanently,” she said. “Residences and businesses that repeatedly forget will now be slapped with a sticker on their bin to remind them to do the right thing, or else.” Repeat offenders who fail to heed council’s warnings can face fines of up to $4000 under State Government legislation. Cr Jones said the new warning stickers aimed to clean up the problem of abandoned bins before harsher penalties were called for. “This is about council wanting a cleaner, more visually appealing Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Bins on streets are unsightly and can create unhealthy situations when they’re knocked over in the street. If you receive a sticker on your bin, do the right thing and bring it in once its emptied and there’ll be no more stickers and no possibility that you’ll be fined.” For information on what day your bins are collected, visit council’s website and click on ‘Waste collection,’ or call customer service on (07) 5475 7272.

Council not making phone ‘survey’ calls to residents’ SUNSHINE Coast Council has received advice that a person or persons may be ringing Coast residents claiming to be a council representative. The callers are asking questions of residents concerning a survey on de-amalgamation issues. Residents may also be receiving these calls on weekends. Council is not carrying out any such phone surveys and advises residents to ask for the name and contact number of the caller to verify their identity before providing any information.

Have you ever dreamed what it would be like to sit on a board of directors?

WELL, that opportunity has arrived for three local high school students and they’re all pretty excited! Zoe Arch, Lea Zeestraton and JaimeLee Thomasson all attend Noosa District High School and all

share a keen interest in business. Recently, the girls were appointed as Junior Observers for 2011 on a board that manages one of the only publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast Community Financial

Services Limited (SCCFSL) manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin. Since 2002, these same Community Bank branches have com-

bined to give back more than $455,000 to community groups, schools and organisations right across our region. The branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more money stays in the area for local investment. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at Cooroy Library - and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at the school each June, the girls were made aware of a program where they could attend each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how community banking works on a boardroom level. It’s a big step in the right direction in the development of any career and the girls have seen firsthand how it can

lead to a great job close to home. One of last years’ junior directors is Lucie Loginow, who was school captain at Noosa District State High School before starting Customer Service Officer at Cooroy branch in February is a great example of that. “I know I speak for each of the girls when I say how happy I am to have been given this opportunity”, local JaimeLee Thomasson said. “The SCCFSL board is packed with years of experience and they’re really lovely people who are keen to pass on their knowledge. “It’s a great head start to learn how a board works and also to learn more about the important part the Community Bank branches plays in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin’s future. It’s just amazing how much time and money the branches have invested in our communities already for all our benefit,” Jaime-Lee said.

ACCORDING to local pool safety inspector, Chris Bell, all pool owners need to register their pool by the 4th May 2011. Failure to do so by this date could result in a fine of up to $2000. The register has been developed under state government’s new pool safety laws that came into effect late last year and has been prepared with the input of all Local Governments’ records of regulated pools across Queensland. To check the register, simply go to w w w. d i p . q l d . g o v. a u click on ‘Pool Safety Register’ and then ‘Register Your Pool’. Enter your property details. The register will then show if the pool is registered. If no pool is shown, click on ‘Alert the Pool Safety Council’ and enter the number of pools located on the property. Alternatively, call 5447 7737 and Pool Fence Approvals will register the pool on behalf of the pool owner. There is no charge for this service. It should be noted that a regulated pool in-

cludes both in-ground and aboveground pools, spa pools and in fact, any pool with a depth greater than 300 mm. Once registration is confirmed, pool owners have until the 30th November 2015 to comply with the new laws, or earlier if they sell or lease their property. Until then though, if there is a drowning or immersion related injury in the swimming pool, then the legislation falls squarely on the pool owner. In the four months since the new legislation came into effect, more than 85% of pools have failed on their first inspection. However many of the faults are quite minor and can easily be remedied by the pool owner or whoever it is that maintains the property. As a result, Pool Fence Approvals are endeavouring to work with pool owners to help them get it right the first time. Pool Fence Approvals have also introduced a fixed price inspection fee, so regardless of what is required to make the pool compliant, their

Our group had decided to make bags and fill them with sewing notions, books, toiletries and material. $500 was also donated to the local patchwork shop ‘Sew Creative’, to be handed out as $25 vouchers, which will be used in the shop. Two sewing machines were delivered along with the bags. While there we were taken on a tour through the Grantham area. The devastation and heartbreak of seeing all the Australian flags flying outside houses of people who had lost their lives was very confronting. Talking with some of the locals we L-R: Gail (Sew Creative), Dianne Eastley, were reminded of the hardships many Margaret Price and Julie Dodds (Patches of of the people in the area are still trying Cooroy), Janelle and Lyn (Sew Creative) to cope with. Many are still without reasonable housing and money is in short supply. WE have been operating our production nursery for over 25 years, supplying plants initially to the landscape professional but also over recent years directly to the home owner. Often customers will point out a plant in the nursery and make the comment - ‘why doesn’t the one in my garden look like that?’ or ‘my neighbours gardenias look fantastic – why don’t mine?’ It may be that a plant variety is suitable for this climate, but is in the wrong position in the garden or its water and nutrient requirements are incorrect. Over the coming months we will be highlighting a particular plant variety in this column and give some detailed information about its ideal growing conditions, so that you can become the neighbour with the fantastic garden. Important factors may be: • Soil type preferences. Is your soil heavy and moisture retentive or open and free draining. Sometimes you can change the soil structure by adding other media or chemicals to make it more versatile or you can just select plants that thrive in the ground you have.

• Does a plant prefer full sun, filtered sun or heavy shade. Some plants will tolerate both extremes, other are very specific. • What are the moisture requirements. Are there wet and dry areas in your garden. If you leave your property for long periods, you may have to install a watering system or you can alternatively select plants that will tolerate more neglect. • What are a plant’s nutrient requirements. Some natives like Grevilleas and Banksias have adapted to our low phosphorus soils and excessive fertilizing will kill them. Other more tropical varieties have high nutrient demands. • Temperature requirements. Will a plant be affected by excessive heat or frost? WE have been very fortunate in our region to have been spared the wind, rain and storms that the rest of the State has experienced this summer. Even though we are now in April, there is still risk as the storm and cyclone season in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia extends from November to April. Recently there have been some interviews on Community Radio, and organised community education workshops to discuss preparation for Storms and Cyclones as these events can strike anywhere at any time. Perhaps it is timely to address these again and we will do this over the next two issues of ‘The Cooroy Rag’. Top tips include: Preparing your Home; Preparing your Emergency Kit and Evacuation Plan; and What to Do During and After a Severe Weather Event. Prepare your Home: Check your house and roof are in good condition; clear your gutters of leaves and debris; trim tree branches well clear of your house; clear your property of loose items that could cause injury and damage during extreme winds; check your Home & Contents Insurance Policies are adequate; identify the strongest room in the house, usually the smallest room, in case you need to shelter during a severe storm or cyclone.

Prepare your Emergency Kit: It should contain items such as torch (with spare batteries), fuel lamp or candles, waterproof matches, money, change for phone calls, documents and irreplacable items, strong plastic bags (for clothes & valuables), battery operated radio (with spare batteries), fully stocked first aid kit, combination pocket knife, special needs for infants, the aged and people with disabilities, medications, toiletries, water in sealed containers - 10 litres per person (3 days supply), canned food (3 days supply), can opener, utensils, pet food. Your emergency kit should be stored in a safe place with all family members aware of its location. Check the contents regularly to ensure items are in working order and discuss the contents with the family so everyone is aware of its contents and how it should be used. Next issue, we will talk about Preparing an Emergency and Evacuation Plan; and What to do Before, During and After a Storm or Cyclone. Don’t forget you can call the SES for assistance during an emergency on 132 500. For information on the local SES please call for Cooroy, Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102.

news

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott I HAVE received a number of queries in regards the huge set of skid marks on Diamond street, Cooroy outside the Vet Clinic and leading to the Old Energex Depot. The skid marks were made when a vehicle lost control in dramatic fashion and skidded out of control across a footpath before colliding with the old Energex building causing considerable damage. The 22 year old driver received minor injuries and police investigations into this incident included taking a blood sample from the driver as alcohol was strongly suspected as being the major contributing circumstance to this accident. It was more down to luck rather than good management that no one was killed or seriously injured as a result of this accident. Again, this highlights the fact that drink driving represents a huge risk to the community. Random Breath Testing will continue in Cooroy so as to catch and deter this type of driving behaviour. Police have also dealt with a number of youths for a burglary offence committed upon the Cooroy Gym Club which is part of the Sporting Club Complex. During the course of police investigation it became clear that alcohol was a contributing factor as the offenders were drunk at the time and were also apprehended for setting fire to two wheelie bins in Apex Park on the same night. In another incident linked to our youth problems in Cooroy occurred when one of our local business owner had his wallet stolen from his parked car near his business. Three youths stole the wallet and due to the quick work of a witness the police were called and a very comprehensive description led to the apprehension of three youths several hours later. I’d like to commend the witness who did everything right in following the suspects and noting extremely good description. The money and some of the contents have been returned to the owner and the youths dealt

with by police. It is important to advise all owners and drivers of cars to make sure they lock their vehicle when leaving it unattended and not to leave items of value in view of the public. At present this type of behaviour is prevalent in Cooroy but with community support I’m sure we can bring things back under control. By police investigating this one offence we were also able to locate a stolen laptop computer worth $2000 which had been stolen from a car parked at the Eumundi markets. The Laptop was returned to a very grateful school student who had been without school work contained on the computer for several weeks. Can I encourage the whole of the community to be vigilant around town and report every instance of crime and bad behaviour as these youths need to know that it’s not just the Cooroy Police after them but the whole of the Cooroy Community.

Police are also requesting information into a burglary offence that occurred in Corkwood Place, Cooroy where a red Repco Mountain bike was stolen from a unlocked garage. Investigations to date seem to point towards the same group of youths having something to do with this so if any member of the public sees a red Men’s Repco Mountain bike please contact the police station. Two lovely young ladies who are students of the Noosa District High School recently approached me with a request to film a documentary involving the Cooroy Police and our involvement with the local community. This project was part of their film and media studies and was required as part of there end of semester assessment. I’m pleased to say that the girls reported that they interviewed a number of local community leaders and general members of the public and all of the feedback about the local police was very positive and full of praise so thank you to the local community members who had a kind word to say. We appreciate it.

COME along and get into Easter party mode with XSession at the Cooroy RSL on Thursday April 21st at 7.30pm. X-Session began as a band back in 1998. It began as a group of local school teachers getting together to play for the end of year staff party. Out of that the band grew into a formal group playing at weddings and birthday parties and 13 years later they are still going strong. Local Cooroy School Teacher Mark Crosland plays percussion and bass. David Wright from Cooroy Saddlery (ex Noosa District SHS teacher) plays bass and lead guitar. John Beaufoy, the music teacher from Tewantin State School plays guitar and from time to time a fourth member, Mark Emsby from Kingaroy joins with the boys to add keyboards and percussion. Vocals are shared, although John Beaufoy does the bulk of the work in that department. Mark Emsby and John Beaufoy both played in the bush band that entertained people waiting to enter the Qld pavilion at Expo 88. So what can you expect to hear from X-Session? Anything from the 50’s to the present is on the cards. Neil Young, The Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Rolling Stones, Little River Band, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brother’s and many more popular bands from the past are all covered and then to compliment that you will find some more recent popular material has also found its way into the repertoire. The band can play relaxing dinner music to help complement the dining experience, but then in the time it takes to swallow that last mouthful of delicious RSL cuisine the beat can switch to something that will make you want to get up and have a good time dancing and singing along for the rest of the night.

dining & entertainment Dingo Creek Blues festival

WITH the Dingo Creek Wine, Jazz and Blues Festival on April 30/May 1 closing in fast, Pomona’s Jamie Lockhart is busy getting his program together for the big event. The blues singer and guitarist, has been on the Sunshine Coast for just over two years having arrived via his former hometown of Melbourne and later Byron Bay. And it was Sunshine Coast mayor Bob Abbot who noticed Lockhart one night at a gig in the Boreen Point pub and played a hand in getting him the gig at Dingo Creek. “I’d have to say Bob’s a bit of a fan of mine it seems, and he really encouraged me to get involved with Dingo Creek.” Lockhart, 41, has been shaped by many influences over the years including Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jim Morrison, Tom Waits and Chris Rea just to name a few. Several years ago Jamie toured the USA starting win Los Angeles, moving onto Detroit before the highlight where he had the privilege of opening for the late great Jeff Healy at the NXNE Music Festival in Toronto. Jamie said that for the Dingo Creek festival, he was working on presenting a show that included a Delta slide blues genre with blues from the 1920s through to the 1940s. “My program will be songs made famous by the likes of Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, with a bit of Muddy Waters thrown in for good measure,” Jamie said. “Fortunately I have that type of voice that slips easily into that genre.”

Maison de Provence

He was also looking forward to jamming with other muso’s during the festival using his collection of guitars, including his Gibson arch-top hollowbody guitar. “I’d love to jam with Bob (Abbot) and his new band. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s bound to happen at some stage. That’s what happens at festivals.” Festival organiser Marg Gillespie said this year’s festival had a good mix of jazz and blues. “On the blues side, there’s Jamie, plus the Blind Lemon band which were very popular last year, the ever popular Police Band of Blue and of course Bob Abbot who never ceases to amaze with his swamp blues voice,” Marg said. “On the jazz side the headliners will be the Janet Seidel Trio and Willy Qua and the New Galapagos Duck” along with a host of other great jazz musicians. This is a fundraiser for SIDS and Kids Queensland and held at the Dingo CreekVineyard Traveston, tickets are available on the website www.dingocreek.com.au or phone Marg on 54 851 731, the venue is covered and camping is free.

STUDENTS at Cooran State School have been working scientifically with our resident “Science Spark” all year. This year Science has been a priority at Cooran with all teachers attending training in the inquiry approach to teaching Science as well as the employment of a “Science Spark” to support the teachers in the teaching of science. Year 6/7 students have used “Brain Boxes” (electronics kits) to explore different types of electrical circuits by incorporating a variety of electronic components, including speakers, press switches, slide switches, buzzers and a flashing ‘happy face’ LED (light emitting diode). They have also discovered how the positioning of the light bulbs in a circuit influences the brightness of the bulb. The students have also completed a

science literacy activity where they were required to use cartoon information to construct a timeline of Alessandro Volta’s life. Students have used the “It’s Electrifying” Learning Pathway within Education Queensland’s Learning Place. Here, the students have accessed a number of fantastic online interactive resources to help consolidate their learning. Some students have even completed an online activity where they were required to complete the lighting electrical circuit for a rock concert! Students have been given the Access Key number to enable them to continue on with their learning (at their own pace) from any location in the world. Year 5/6 students have been learning more about microorganisms

as part of their “Marvellous Microorganisms” unit. They have conducted a number of experiments to investigate the conditions needed for yeast to be active and therefore produce gas. The students were amazed to watch the balloons inflate during the day. Students have made predictions and are starting to learn how to write a hypothesis. These practical activities have involved the use of cooperative learning roles, such as director, manager and speaker. Effective teamwork skills are highly valued in today’s society and working in practical groups gives the students practice as fulfilling the expectations of a particular role. The students have also accessed some ICT resources which enabled them to identify the areas where mould and other microorganisms

were found in an average house. Year 4/5 students have done some great work within their “Spinning in Space” unit. They have played a game, not surprisingly called “Spinning in Space” where the students followed instructions by physically acting out the difference between ‘orbit’ and ‘rotate’ (spin). When ‘spinning in space’ was called out, the students were required to orbit and rotate at the

same time – quite a skill to master!! This game highlighted to the students how Earth, while rotating, also orbited the Sun. This was then followed up with a role play where the students were assigned a role of Sun, Earth or moon, and had to move accordingly, by again, referring to the difference between orbit and rotate. The students are showing great progress in the use of their Science journal.

Facelift for kindy AFTER many years of operation, the C&K’s Pomona & District Kindergarten has received some very beneficial improvements. Thanks to a grant through the Queensland Government Community Benefit Fund, work was done inside the building to provide much needed storage space. This included a mobile shelf containing colourful tubs and custom built shelves along the veranda, to streamline the use of space and to also provide a safe storage area which is protected from the elements. Also, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council replaced the carpet and lino inside the building, which has made the start of the new year very exciting. Downstairs, many hours were spent making a new area, the “Enchanted Garden”. It was designed by one of our past parents, Jenny McElhinney, approximately 5 years ago, and has finally come to fruition. The garden contains a pavilion, a paved path, and additional garden beds, which makes exploring in our “Enchanted Garden” fun for all the kids, and allows their imagination to run wild. Secondly, the Kindy has received a “Solar Sport & Community Group Grant” for the purchase of solar panels. These solar panels have just been installed and the Kindy has estimated that they will have no future power bills and are hoping to sell power back to the grid when the Kindy is not in operation, which will be very beneficial to the running costs of the Kindergarten.

Hawk Lane Garden open day HAWK Lane Organic Gardens at 18 Hawk Lane, Pomona will be holding Open Days on April 16th and 17th from 10am to 4.30pm “The gardens were set up with the vision of creating an abundant food forest together with a strong focus on habitat creation, especially for native birds and frogs, said owner, Sean Morrow. “When we moved to this land in 2002 it was 95% clear land except for the house, large dam and large Eucalyptus trees. We immediately commenced working on the gardens. “The property is comprised of a large food forest garden set on 6.5 acres (2.6 hectares) with over 180 species of edible plants, including fruit and nut trees, bush foods and extensive vegetable and herb gardens. There are also many native and exotic trees, shrubs, ferns and palms. The property now has two dams and twenty three frog/bird ponds; abundant wildlife; and a nursery area with plants for sale.” Open grass vistas also sweep

Open day at Vipassana Centre THE Vipassana Centre at Pomona is having an open day on Sunday 8 May, 2011 (from 10am-3pm).The centre conducts regular 10-day residential courses in meditation throughout the year. There will be tours of the centre, set in 60 acres of bush and lovely gardens, as well as an introductory talk at 11am and documentaries on Vipassana courses provided to executives, children and prisoners, will be played throughout the day. Feedback from children and teenagers who have done the courses include increased concentration and self-confidence, being at peace with themselves, more self-control and the ability to calm and relax themselves. Vipassana means insight in ancient Pali, the language used in India at the time of the Buddha. During a ten-day course, students learn to develop insight into their own nature. The meditation is non-sectarian in nature, with no rites or rituals or mantras and is practiced around the world. The focus of the meditation is on developing a calm, concentrated mind through observation of the natural breath, followed by systematic obser-

vation of sensations throughout the body. In this way, the deep interaction of mind and body are realised through direct experience. Vipassana is learning to experience the present moment, rather than just rolling in memories of the past and fantasies about the future. Through this process, the student begins to reduce their old habits of reacting with craving and aversion to their experiences in everyday life. Typical reactions of anger, fear and craving cause much unhappiness in life. This meditative technique helps us live in a calm and balanced way, generating good will, compassion and tolerance for others. The centre, which has been operating in Pomona since 1989, does not charge any fees for its courses. It is a non-profit organisation funded solely by donations and staffed by volunteers. The open day at the Vipassana Centre at 35 Rules Road Pomona commences from 10am Sunday 8 May and all are welcome. Light refreshments will also be served. Telephone: 33711039 or 0418188166 for more information or see www.dhamma.org.

through the property and between the gardens, and there is also a large fenced area set aside for chickens (for egg production). There are no cats or dogs kept as pets on the property, instead there is an ever changing mob of up to 20 Kangaroos as well as Wallabies, Echidna, Platypus in nearby six mile creek, Dingos, Birds, Reptiles and at least 12 native Frog species. Some of the gardens and certain parts of the property are kept a little wild and overgrown to create habitat for countless animals. There are also about 2 acres set aside for native re-growth vegetation. The Yandina Community Gardens and the Maroochy/Noosa Permaculture groups are providing morning/afternoon tea/coffee/cakes/ biscuits and sandwiches as a fundraiser. Sean will be offering two garden tours each day at approximately 11am and 2pm. The tours will run for 30-45 minutes and will start at the back of the house.

Nostalgic trip back to the Trevi Fountain WHEN Frank Sinatra sang the theme to Three Coins in the Fountain back in 1954 he was setting the song on its way to an Oscar and number one spot on hit parades around the world – even if it was the Four Aces who took it to its greater Clifton Webb and success. Dorothy McGuire in a But equally memorable still from the film to many is the film itself: a charming romantic comedy about three American girls working in Italy who wish for the men of their dreams after throwing coins into Rome’s magnificent Trevi Fountain. They are played by Dorothy McGuire, Jean Peters, and Maggie McNamara, and of course all three find romance. But the real star of the film remains Italy. The views of Rome, the Italian countryside, and spectacular Venice are breath-taking. Pomona’s Majestic Theatre is presenting Three Coins in the Fountain at a dinner and film night on Saturday, April 16. A two-course dinner is offered for $20 with the film $15 (or $12 for concessions). Dinner bookings are essential on 5485 2330.

CONTACT lenses outperform glasses on all fronts for cyclists, according to local optometrist and keen cyclist, Jenny Currie from optometry @ cooroy. “Contact lenses can provide a wider field of vision than glasses, better depth perception, and are potentially safer as they won’t break should you be unlucky enough to fall or crash” says Jenny. “Unlike some spectacle frames they also won’t interfere with how your helmet fits” she adds. “Because contact lenses move with your eyes you are always seeing through the optic zone which is the area of best vision. “They provide you with a wider field of vision than spectacles as the frames of spectacles partially restrict peripheral vision. Most contact lenses are also made from materials that have inbuilt ultraviolet filters, cutting out harmful UVA and UVB rays, though to

Muscles: A primary cause of pain SADLY, muscles have long been viewed with disdain or contempt by many people. Most adults have at some time or another experienced headaches, neck pain, and back pain. Perhaps we pay the price for standing and walking erect because the mechanical demand on our spine falls upon the muscles. They are largely regarded as the primary sources of pain. How many times has it been said ‘Oh its only muscular, it’ll get better’? a little too often and unfortunately it rarely does. The susceptibility of muscles to overload and traumatise, arises from their variety of functions and their role in maintaining our bodily posture and mechanics. When we sit, stand, walk and bend, muscles are working continually. The more stress and tension we have in out bodies, the harder our muscles have to work creating stress on joints and ligaments. This in turn can cause injury, inflammation and imbalances within the body. Think of the angle of your car seat, coupled with your feet working the pedals and how sore and stiff your back and neck can be during a long car trip. Sitting at your computer while typing on a keyboard and con-

centrating on the screen. In both of these examples, how is your posture? Looked at logically, a short or tight muscle running over a joint creates compression or pressure. You would reason that ongoing tightness, and therefore the compression created, may be a cause of wear and tear on your joints. If joints are abnormally compressed for long periods there is a decrease in nutrient flow, creating inflammation. This can be caused by: Incorrect posture, Repeated overload and/or overuse, Poor ergonomics in furniture design, Prolonged pressure on the muscle, Diet and Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Overly tight muscles have a great deal to answer for in the health of the human spine. There is no point in exercising or further stressing a tight, short, or weak muscle. In doing so would further aggravate the inflammation and soreness. A muscle should be released first, enabling normal function to return and increasing the muscles length and strength. Treatments such as massage or Bowen therapy will assist in the repair process. Contact Lisa Pree at Lakeridge Health and Beauty, to stop muscle pain. For an appointment phone 54426239.

COOROY RAG

COOROY’S biggest annual celebration of culture, art, environment, health and music – the inaugural Cooroy Fusion – has a trump card: Asa Broomhall. The internationally renowned rock, folk and blues performer will be the headline act at the festival on Saturday 21 May. Cooroy Community Precinct Manager, Tracey King said Cooroy Fusion will be a free, all day celebration of food, fun and community. “The entire Mill Place precinct will be alive with entertainment, workshops, stalls and rides,” Ms King said. “The event will kick off at 9am with a full program of activities across a range of venues and interests. There will be something to suit every age and every taste.” Ms King said the big drawcard for the festival was of course having international rock and roots performer, Asa Broomhall return to Cooroy where he grew up for this special event. “Asa’s dynamic live show has taken him from local venues and festivals to major international performances in the USA, Canada and the UK,” Ms King said.

“It will be exciting for the home crowd to have Asa back to showcase his renowned vocal talents and musicianship.” In the outdoor amphitheatre Dr. Eve Buscombe will start proceedings with a traditional Welcome to Country, followed by the Gubbi Gubbi dancers with a powerful display of song and dance guaranteed to leave a lasting impression as a truly enriching cultural experience. The best of new and emerging young musicians and bands from AMPED will fire up the stage from 1pm. Their performances will range from rock to hip hop and pop, with a blend of acoustic originals. Once the stage has warmed up, Asa Broomhall will entertain with his mix of rock, folk and blues and a dose of mischief. In the Green Space a variety of food markets will be selling fresh produce and plants and food stalls will be offering richly brewed coffee, savoury snacks with a touch of Thai spice and Dutch pancakes, waffles, fruit and ice-cream. The real treat will be tasty bushfood creations crafted by Dale Chapman, our locally renowned bushfood chef.

There will be a focus on health and wellbeing for those interested in a more peaceful start to the weekend. Join in the tai chi, yoga, healing and health workshops. Meanwhile, the Sunken Courtyard will host a writer’s tent featuring author talks, literary discussion and book readings The Butter Factory Arts Centre will house an exhibition and art workshops. Cooroy Community Gardens will be demonstrating organic food growing and gardening and crop rotation will be the focus of a permaculture workshop. There will be more music in the amphitheatre, children’s acting, drawing and face painting workshops and so much more. Cooroy Fusion has been made possible with generous sponsorship from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Cooroy Rag. Natural Pain Relief – Your effective Physiotherapy partner CONVENTIONAL medication for treating and managing injuries and chronic conditions, such as antiinflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and muscle relaxants, whilst suitable and effective for some, are unable to be used by others. The potential for side effects, the need for doctors prescription and the fear of future health implications, means many people simply take nothing. Targeted nutrition and supplementation has an important role in achieving maximum health after injury or managing long term conditions. These nutrients provide the materials required for repairing tissues, reducing pain and inflammation. Fish Oils The benefits of consuming fish oils have been well documented, but in terms of musculoskeletal conditions, they have been clinically shown to help relieve the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. They also help to maintain normal cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health. Not all fish oils are the same. It is important to have the right concentration of Omega -3 essential fatty acids, as well as be sure that the product you consume has been screened for toxins and heavy metals. Anti-Inflammatory Herbs Many people are unable to take anti-inflammatory tablets due to the gastro-intestinal side effects.

Metagenics “Inflavonoid Intensive Care” and “Kaprex” have been designed to provide clinically effective anti-inflammatory action whilst being gut friendly. Kaprex is also suitable for use by most people even if you are taking blood thinners (check with you therapist or doctor first). Inflavonoid Intensive Care is best used for an acute injury, whilst Kaprex is predominantly used for long term inflammatory processes. Joint and Bone Support Arthrex is a formulation specifically designed to provide nutrition for joints and bones. It contains glucosamine sulfate, type II collagen and gelatin. It provides an holistic support for arthritis sufferers as it ensures all components of the joints (bone, cartilage and connective tissue) are addressed. Magnesium Magnesium deficiency has been associated with a number of conditions including Fibromyalgia, muscular pain and cramps, migraines and tension headaches as well as fatigue and stress. Metagenics produce 4 different types of magnesium to best manage your condition. COOROY RAG

Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club THE Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club has added another premiership to its cabinet with its 5 th division side achieving an outright win against Palmwoods over three days to seal a well deserved premiership. With Cooroy-Eumundi just scraping into the finals playoffs by one point, they faced off in a semi final against Tewantin-Noosa in a closely fought local derby. Both teams felt confident heading into

the derby, but a strong top order performance by Cooroy in the first innings and opening bowler Steve Holt’s 10/ 84 proving the difference in their three wicket outright win. With the win against Te w a n t i n - N o o s a , Cooroy-Eumundi booked a place in the final against the second placed Palmwoods. Things looked grim for Cooroy, needing a win for the premiership, with only 82 out of 192 overs

being bowled due to rain. Palmwoods were content with a rain-affected draw, handing them a hollow default win. However, after Cooroy-Eumundi restricting Palmwoods to a paltry 85, with Troy Park taking an astonishing 8/39, a stunning collapse which included six ducks saw Cooroy bowled out for 50 with only two batsman making double figures. Needing an outright win on the final day,

Each applicant must have a letter of support signed by a local RSL member, letter from a referee who can verify their achievements and an essay which highlights the RSL and ANZAC values to Australia’s youth.

Cooroy-Eumundi kept Palmwoods to 99 in great batting conditions. Troy Park capping off a memorable match with figures of 10/51, and off spinner Rhys Pousette working hard for his terrific 5/31. With a session and a half to chase 135, openers Ken Park and Leon Wustenhofer set about the job of laying a platform and were cruising until a mix up resulted in Leon being runout. After struggling for players at the beginning of the year we now have a team of 25 players mostly young local lads with a few old boys for experience. More players are welcome to join the Cutters as we move forward to rebuild a new team. Training nights are Tuesday and Thursday 6pm at Cooran. Ph. President Jason Greentree 0447 533 411.

We’re not just about tyres, we can take care of all mechanical & exhaust needs as well

holed out to third man leaving Cooroy in a tricky spot at 2/45. Still having plenty to do, Andy Sawyer (34not out) and Jesse Ritchie (62not out) combined to put on 94 for the third wicket and bring the premiership home for Cooroy-Eumundi. The win meant a positive end to a mixed season at the club, and we hope to take the positives out and continue to provide a brilliant environment to further the game.

U7 White team went to Palmwoods last weekend. After the first quarter they started to play well with some good tackles by Chanse Wilson, Kynan Allen and Zane O’Grady who was also strong in attack. U7 Blues had another great win and continue to improve every week. Curtis played strong in defence and Ethan made good ground with the ball. U8 Blue are improving every week with some impressive passing in attack backed up by plenty of numbers with Ethan Lewis bagging 3 trys. U8 Gold really improved in defence this week. Kade took the boys up off the line and Michael and Levi got down low with some nice tackles. Liam and Ryan showed some great foot work to score several tries. U9 Gold continue to improve. Defence was very good keeping out the Coolum side for the whole game. U9 Blues, were solid in defence. Man of the Match was Harrison

Baker, closely followed by Ethan Condon and Michael Cutcliffe. U10 Gold went up against a well drilled and much larger opposition. Man of the match went to Lachy Tindall. U11 Gold and Blue played each other this weekend and with all the boys being such great mates it was played in the true spirit of the game. Well done to all the boys who recently made the district and North Coast rep sides. U12 Gold had a nice win but were well below their best against Caloundra. Under 12 Blue had a slow start against Caloundra Black and found themselves 12-0 down after 10 minutes, but with the spark of Ethan Wikaira, Noosa lifted in a fantastic fight back. Although the boys just fell short (168), it was a great team effort. Outstanding efforts from Tyler Quigley, Lachlan Grace and try scorers Tristian Williams and Stuart Milligan. U13 B’s had a hard fought match with Coolum at home. Jay

Simonds-Dolan appeared to be everywhere throughout the game but it wasn’t enough to stop a charging Coolum Maroon. The final score was 40 - 18. U13 A’s also sized up against a Coolum side in a much tighter contest. Luke Giacca drew first blood in the game, with a great break from Darcey Crawford Rickards to set up the try. Great defence held Coolum out and Noosa were the grinners on the full time hooter. U15’s travelled to Kawana on Friday night. The forwards led the way in a great game. Ben Henderson was man of the match with some superb hit ups and tough defence. The players are pulling together as a top team and all this showed with a 26-20 win. U16’s played Stanley Rivers at Woodford winning 46-4 in a very physical encounter with both sides throwing everything they had in defence. Our boys were like guided missiles with 3 and 4 players in most tackles. A great effort; we will definitely be a force this year.

Highway to hell

Clare takes a dive

POMONA’S Wayne Metcalfe has finished the first leg of the Marathon De Sables - Sahara which was 33km taking 9 hours and 44 min. Wayne reports: “STAGE 1 - Day 1 Marathon De Sables - Sahara. 33km. Just crossed the line on probably the most difficult race I have ever done, 849 competitors from 44 nations started and at 9am loaded with full backpacks and to the sound of ACDC Highway to Hell. We set off into the heat and sand. Luckily it was overcast for the first 2 hours. After 13KM we hit the Merzouga Dunes some of the highest in the world. It

took me 4 1/2hours to get through their awesome heights. It was 13km non stop dunes in the full sun with full backpack. Then a further7km to finish. My legs are absolutely trashed and I have blisters starting on both feet but otherwise OK. Tomorrow is 38km again with sand dunes and some climbs. Everybody is suffering. Televised on Eurosport News daily.” Luckily Wayne has a great cause to help keep him motivated. So far he has raised $1,270 for the John McLean Foundation and is hoping to reach $3,000 so we are encouraging everyone to pitch in and help him get there.

Perseverance pays off for Cooroora

CLARE Mitchell from Eumundi was one of 32 elite wingsuit skydivers from around Australia to have been selected to participate a 5 day camp at Toogoolawah. Wingsuit flying is the cutting edge discipline within skydiving with participants wearing sugar glider style suits in freefall. It enables the pilots to experience true flight by obtaining higher speeds, longer freefall times and the ability to cover long distances. This camp was the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere with elite international coaches and 7time world skydiving champions, Fred and Vince from Soulflyers, France attending. The participants focussed on flying in large groups incorporating high G-force manoeuvres, cross country flights, dog fights and aerobatic formations comparative to the RAAF roulettes.

SCOTT Rocker proved himself beyond a doubt to be more than just an average coach against Woombye last week with a tough fought out 4 – 3 win. It has been a frustrating start to the season with two losses in closely fought out games but this perseverance with his team coaching and tactics are starting to pay off. Cooroora ’s team is shaping up to be a heck of an opponent for all future fixtures. The premier men’s team followed up the win against woombye with a 3-0 winover kawana reserve grade in the final group match of the Johnny warren cup. This now puts the boys at the top of their group and into the semi finals. The reserve grade team is having a slow start to the season and will be looking to pick up some favourable results over the coming weeks after a couple of losses.

SALE NOW ON

The other senior teams have the over 35 ’s mens on 2 wins and one draw from 3 games, great result. Geez how far can Dad’s Army go this year. Coach has the team focused and fit. Keep an eye on these boys and expect to see them racking up more wins. The ladies are on a steep learning curve after winning the grand final last year and going up into premier reserve grade. This is the highest level any ladies team from Cooroora has played at and the girls will have to lift their game and fitness levels to break into the top four this year. The club welcomes everyone in the district along to our home games where there is a licensed area for people to enjoy the game in comfortable surrounds. The Canteen and bar volunteers are extremely friendly and you can always stay and meet the First grade team and other players after the game.
