Christmas is racing into town CHRISTMAS is just around the corner and Cooroy is gearing up for the festive season and its biggest celebration of the year. Christmas in Cooroy is happening

GemLife sets up legal team BY ALEX PURCELL

GEMLIFE has engaged a legal team in their fight to appeal Noosa Council’s decision to reject the proposed development of an over 50s lifestyle resort in Cooroy. In an update on the GemLife proposal, presented to Cooroy Golf Club members at their recent AGM, the Cooroy Golf Club Committee was advised that GemLife had “engaged a legal and

expert team to pursue the Planning & Environment Court’s approval of the proposal”. The Cooroy Golf Club Committee has been advised by GemLife that the appeal process is a “hearing anew, meaning the Court effectively reassesses the development application afresh” and the decision to appeal Council’s decision involves “substantial additional financial commitment

by GemLife to achieve an approval”. As part of the process, Cooroy Golf Club members can expect to see a number of experts onsite carrying out additional field and investigative work related to the additional assessments of ecology, waterways, traffic, engineering and water quality, which GemLife has advised “is quite common for a court appeal of this type”.

The Committee said it had been advised that a final decision from the Court was not expected until at least the middle of next year but that GemLife was “fully committed to this project and associated improvements to the Cooroy Golf Club, which in broad terms includes course improvements, new clubhouse and buggy shed, guaranteed memberships and ancillary items, all of which remain as

per the original proposal that was voted in favour by the membership”. The Committee has continued to work with GemLife to ensure a desirable outcome for the club. GemLife is working on providing Club members with a “comprehensive package of proposed course drawings with details of water storage and specifications for the construction of tees, fairways and greens”.

The Clubhouse drawings will show all the fittings and fixtures being provided, and there will be a contract setting out terms and conditions of the final proposal for the golf club. All this information will be made available to members with briefing sessions and ample time for member feedback before a special general meeting to discuss and then vote on the proposal.

Playground timetable pushed back..................................... 3

Cooroy Rag editor, Alex Purcell

I RECENTLY witnessed a random act of kindness in our community. A homeless man was taking shelter from the weather under Pomona & District Community House. A kind local walking past, noticed that the man had no personal effects, including no bedding or food, and was timid and shy when spoken to. So the kind local went home, to a local cafe, then came back and presented the man with a swag, a burger and a piece of chocolate cake. Apparently the man couldn’t believe that these gifts were his, and asked why. No reason, he was told. This reminded me of how lucky we are to live not only in paradise, but also among such caring, generous people. But more importantly, it reminded me of how easy it can be to make a difference to someone else. When I first told my children that there is something in the world more valuable than gold and yet, you can give it for free, they looked at me in disbelieving awe and asked what. Kindness, I said. Kindness is worth more than anything. It is something we can give freely. It can be as simple as telling someone they look lovely, asking someone how they are, or giving someone down on their luck, something that you no longer need. Festive season or not, it is always the time for giving. Give someone a piece of kindness today. Your editor,

Alex

Playground timetable pushed back NOOSA Council has announced a revised construction schedule for the Hinterland Playground. The unique nature-based, all-abilities playground will now open to the public in March, 2022. Mayor Clare Stewart said that there are three key factors that had pushed the completion date into the new year. “Noosa, like many other councils across Queensland, has experienced significant delays in supply due to interstate Covid lockdowns, especially in NSW, delaying manufacturing of critical play equipment components. “On top of this, we are operating in a very heated construction market and whilst we have striven to employ our local tradies, demand in this market means we haven’t had access to enough highly skilled contractors required for the bespoke carpentry work associated with a build of this calibre,” Cr Stewart said. The site itself also presented some environmental factors with development planning conditions that needed to be resolved during the year as the playground took shape. Acting CEO Larry Seng-

Belvedere on Pearl will showcase the 'Cooroy character'.

Tick for townhouses The Hinterland Playground is now set to open next March following delays.

stock said that Council had worked tirelessly over the past 10 months to manage delays caused by these factors. “The supply and labour market issues were not part of the planning equation when we started this project, but they have really impacted our construction schedule in the last few months," he said. The following works are under way at the Hinterland Playground: • Inground stormwater treatment systems and

water connection to playground have been installed All play equipment, including Rocketship and other specialist structures, have been fully fabricated and installation has commenced on-site The water-play feature, internal pathways and bridges are almost complete The amenities Block and adjacent mounded viewing area construction are complete

The fitout of the amenities block is underway, including the “Changing Places” room • Delivery and installation of mature tree stock are under way to select areas Council has also completed 34 new car parks, 22 overflow car parks, a new raised pedestrian crossing, additional disabled car parks as well as pathways to provide connectivity to the playground and the township of Cooroy.

A NEW two-story residential development showcasing the “Cooroy character” has received development approval. Owners of Belvedere on Pearl told the Cooroy Rag the collection of 11 exclusive residences were all tailored to a low maintenance lifestyle. “With two and three-bedroom townhouses that have been designed with Cooroy’s charming countryside setting at the forefront, Belvedere on Pearl exudes stunning character.” Designer Ian Brundell said the collection of 11 two and three-bedroom units were of “premier

design”. “We didn’t want to venture too far outside the Cooroy character overlay. “So we have gone with Hamptons style. We really wanted to create an estate feel with wrought iron gates and a bitumen driveway. Build 4 U Sunshine Coast builder and part-owner of the project, Michael Lance, said the development will be as three pods that fit in with

the charm of Cooroy. Wythes Real Estate agent Alisa Wythes said that the response to the development had been huge with six units already sold.

Council seeks guidance on restrictions

Parking has now become more relaxed in public bays between Cooroy Kindergarten and the op shop.

Review puts brakes on strictly nose-in parking PARKING requirements in a Cooroy car park have changed. The off-street car park between the Cooroy Kindergarten and the op shop is no longer nosein only. Noosa Council’s traffic engineers conducted a review of the signage in the off-street public car park that is accessed off Maple Street and con-

sidered there were no reasons to have parking signs that required motorists to park in a specific direction. Typically, 90-degree car parking areas, similar to shopping centre car parks, allow motorists to decide whether to park front-in or reverse-in. Traffic Engineering Officer Scott Morgan said the review resulted in the need to alter the sig-

nage. We were made aware of the situation by a resident and reviewed the parking signs. “The Traffic and Design Team agreed that there was no clear benefit to have 'nose-in' parking in this situation, so we installed a blank sticker over the statement to avoid any confusion and we will continue to monitor wthe performance of the offstreet car park."

NOOSA Council is seeking the urgent release of Public Health directions regarding the specific rules which will underpin the State’s planned restrictions for those who are unvaccinated, and the effect of these restrictions on Council’s workforce, local businesses, tourism operators and the wider Noosa community. Mayor Clare Stewart said that it was very difficult for businesses to make workable plans with the limited information provided. “Our business community is increasingly concerned at the expectations placed on them and the adverse impact that these proposed conditions could have on the local economic recovery. “How will the new measures be enforced? How do operators monitor the situation? We need those details to provide a level of comfort and allow us to answer the questions from the community,” she said. Council is assessing all its facilities and services in order to develop an operational plan and to respond to the Queensland Government’s roadmap.

THE vehicles are polished and Santa is locked in, as Noosa prepares for some Christmas cheer with its Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy this December. Due to the success of last year’s inaugural convoy, Noosa councillors have given the green light for it to return from Monday 6 December to Thursday 9 December. Mayor Clare Stewart said that last year’s event was simply superb. “It was wonderful to see the smiling faces and unbridled joy, so we’re thrilled to have it return across the shire,” said Mayor Stewart. “Some additional streets have been added to try and reach as much of the shire as possible.” Community Development

Manager Alison Hamblin said the route on Day Three had been extended to include parts of Noosaville. “After reviewing the routes and based on feedback, the convoy will now drive down Gympie Terrace and make a stop at the Noosa Boat Ramp on Wednesday afternoon,” she said. The convoy starts in Boreen Point and Cooroibah on Monday night, 6 December, and moves to Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy on Tuesday. It travels through parts of Tewantin and Noosaville on Wednesday 8 December and concludes with visits to the beachside suburbs of Peregian, Castaways and Sunrise Beach and Hastings Street on Thursday 9 December. Noosa Police Acting Inspector Ben Carroll said

that all emergency services were excited to be back on board. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas with the community and allow residents to thank the work of the emergency service personnel,” he said. With COVID restrictions easing, the convoy will stop at a number of locations on each day to allow youngsters to catch up with Santa and check out the vehicles. Maps of the routes are available on Noosa Council’s website and will be promoted via its social media channels and HOT91. The convoy is an initiative of Noosa Council, and supported by emergency services, HOT91 and the Madill Motor Group.

Merle Sherwin celebrates her 100th birthday, and below, in her RAAF uniform during World War II.

Merle marks 100 years with family and friends FORMER Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force Corporal, Merle Sherwin, has celebrated her 100th birthday. The new centenarian marked this milestone with a birthday party at Kabara Nursing Home in Cooroy on 22 November, where she was surrounded by family and friends. Merle joined the RAAF on 27 June 1942, and after her induction course, was trained as a radio operator. After further training, she became a radar operator on 3 September 1943. The 131 Radar Station was built on Ash Island, near Newcastle, on 7 September, 1942, following the submarine attack that shelled Newcastle on 8 June, 1942. Merle was part of the 131 Radar Station, a 22 WAAAF strong contingent that provided 24 hour surveillance of the sky and the sea, scanning for planes, ships and submarines, and thereby keeping Australia safe. It was during one of her shifts that she spotted

Japanese planes heading towards the Coast. Merle was also stationed at 49 Radar RAAF at Sandgate. Merle enjoyed life in the RAAF, had many close friendships, and liked the opportunity to travel. While billeted with an older couple in Gosford, Merle formed a friendship that lasted for many years after she was discharged from the RAAF. An amazing friendship occurred when she moved to Tewantin in her later years, when Merle became close friends with her next-door neighbour, only to discover

that they had both been WAAAF Radar Operators based at 131 Radar Station, but had never met. Merle was discharged on 7 June 1945 and returned to her previous employment as a clerk at the Herald Newspaper. She stayed in this employment until her marriage to John Mortley, an army corporal, who was based in Darwin during the war. Following their marriage, Merle and John were transferred from Sydney to Melbourne and resided there with their four children, three sons and a daughter, until their retirement. On retirement, they relocated back to Merle’s family home in Balgowla, Sydney, then moved to the Gold Coast to be closer to family in 1992. When John passed away in 2002, Merle then moved to Tewantin. Merle Mortley is to be congratulated for her service in one of the most frightening wars that this country has ever experienced.

Class of '71 reunion earns top marks NOOSA District State High School’s Class of 1971 celebrated their 50-year reunion at Saw & Mill recently. Former student and teacher, Liz Garbacz, said that after organising the 30th reunion 20 years ago with the help of Jan Arnold and Julie Ainscough, they decided they couldn’t miss their 50th. “Our main challenge for this reunion was tracking people down, as last time we found most people in the White Pages as they had house phones. Power up for summer with Aussie-made solar system THERE is a local team bringing Australian-made solar systems that have unrivalled performance to the Hinterland. ALS Solar is an Australian-owned and operated company with a head office in Queensland and a local sales manager here on the Coast. Queensland Sales Manager Shaun Cranfield said he was available for house visits to talk residents through their power bills and how to offset them through a reliable solar system with industry leading warranties. “Here in Australia we have some of the highest electricity prices in the world, and a quality solar system, specifically built for Australian conditions, installed by industry professionals, would be a great investment for every household in Australia. “Our Australian-made Tindo Solar Panels are the most reliable, and come with a 25year full product warranty. “Here at ALS Solar, we have built a team of internal employees allowing us to take full ownership of any project that we conduct, therefore ensuring the successful delivery and ongoing service to our clients.” Shaun said that solar was becoming more common in Australia, but residents needed to watch out for underperforming systems that used untested products. “The ALS Solar system is a result of industry experts conducting ongoing research and development to ensure value for our clients.” Shaun says that’s why he works with ALS. “I love what they’re about and what the company stands for. I left my job as a construction manager for a global company to be part of the team here at ALS Solar. “Their passion to deliver a quality product to Australians while making a positive impact on the environment and the world, made me want to be a part of that culture.” To learn more about ALS Solar contact Shaun on 0455 144 415 or email shaun@ Shaun Cranfield alssolar.com.

It has been “all systems go” for Hinter Hub, since opening its doors a year ago.

Quality and local part of Hub ethos POMONA’S Hinter Hub is celebrating its first birthday on 1 December. Since Noosa & District Landcare opened the retail outlet on Station Street, opposite the Pomona Hotel, Hinter Hub has developed a reputation for stocking high quality local native plants as well as unique, locally made quality gifts that are inspired by nature. Hinter Hub manager Belinda Wedlock said it had been quite a year. “It has been all systems go since the day we opened the door,” he said. “We have learnt the retail ropes fast in this new COVID world where customers, more than ever, are looking to buy local ‘produce’ in a safer environment, rather than at a large shopping centre which is seen as ‘germ central’.” “And as a result, Hinter Hub grew really well thanks to all the support. “We now have over instore 60 suppliers , who all embrace the importance of locally made and environ-

mentally sensitive produce. “Our suppliers are based in Pomona, Cooran, Pinbarren, Kin Kin, Cootharaba, Cooroibah, Noosa, Eumundi, Gympie, Buderim, and Nambour. “This means our goods for sale are incredibly local. “Moreover the team of green thumbs at the production nursery continually supply us with high quality local endemic species.” Hinter Hub also provides training for trainees and a welcome home-away-fromhome for several volunteers. “We have had two trainees, Narelle Tomkinson and Mia Douglas, from Skilling Queenslanders work with us at Hinter Hub since we opened. “Narelle and Mia have completed a Certificate I in Retail with Axiom College while working in the production nursery and retail nursery/ shop for their 22-week program. We also have our devoted Hinter Hub volunteers. Every Tuesday, Donna Goslett brings her vivacious

enthusiasm to Hinter Hub, and is keen to share her knowledge and help anyone. “Shaun Walsh, amazingly found time in his very busy schedule to educate our clients on local landscaping ideas in the retail nursery with his amazing wealth of knowledge and experience. “Dale Hamlyn, with her wealth of experience running an art gallery and other small businesses, helped us to swoosh up Hinter Hub.” Belinda said that they had noticed many day trippers who visit Hinter Hub spreading the word about the shop. “We continue to keep getting the word out about Hinter Hub, by increasing our social media presence, as well as accessing local media print advertising such as Cooroy Rag.” Hinter Hub staff are celebrating the birthday milestone with a shop and sip event at Hinter Hub on Wednesday, 1 December, from 5-7pm. A POMONA artist is showcasing a series of portraits that explore the power and intimacy of the sea. Over the past nine years, photographer Keith Hamlyn has been capturing portraits of people in the sea to document their collective connection to the ocean. Keith said this body of work looks at the space that we go to when we immerse ourselves in the sea. “For me a big part of being Australian or for that matter human, is our relationship to water. “Even if we come from the desert, the moment we meet the water there is a transformation, and for each of us we are taken somewhere of our own knowing. “In this imagery I hope to capture people in that space, so that perhaps we, the observers, can search out where these subjects have gone and truly see them for the first time.” Over 100 people from Noosa to Caloundra participated in the portrait series, which is on exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery until Sunday 5 December. The Eumundi Christmas Extravaganza is teaming up with Hinterland Carols for a bumper program.

Christmas extravaganza set to be the best ever THE much-loved Eumundi Christmas Extravaganza has joined forces with the Hinterland Carols and is set to be the biggest, best and most extravagant event ever, on Sunday 12 December from 2.30pm, thanks to a host of local sponsors. After being inundated by a downpour last year, Eumundi & District Historical Association, as the organiser, decided that this year they would have everyone under a massive marquee that covered the stage and the hundreds of chairs in the viewing area, thereby ensuring that the show will go on regardless of any weather events. Sponsored by Wythes Real Estate, the stage show entertainment has taken a step up with festive performances by Noosa District Concert Band, Eumundi State

Creativity in quarantine

Ceramicist Tania Edwards, left, will be one of the artists featured at the upcoming Kin Kin Christmas Art Fair.

Making an art of drawing visitors THE tiny village of Kin Kin with one shop, a cafe and a hotel (currently closed for renovation) recently proved that it can still punch above its weight, especially when it comes to art. On Sunday 7 November, an astonishing 620 visitors and locals descended on the town’s School of the Arts Hall to enjoy the inaugural Kin Kin Art Fair. With 17 artists’ work on display, lots of sales and a great vibe, the day was so successful that the Art Fair

is on again. The Kin Kin Community Group, which staged the free art fair to give artists a chance to exhibit and sell their work without having to pay a fee or commission, is putting on the Kin Kin Christmas Art Fair at the School of the Arts on Sunday 5 December, starting at 8am. Cooroy ceramicist Tania Edwards will be there “with bells on” along with painters, jewellers and mosaic artists from Kin Kin, Cooran,

Gympie painter Peter Hughes painted four new

canvases on the day and sold some of his larger works. Peter will again be showing his extraordinary skills with brush, palette knife - and even fingers - at the Christmas Art Fair. As well as attending the Art Fair, visitors to Kin Kin can enjoy a morning stroll around the village’s re-energised market on the Showground. Admission to both the market and art fair are free.

Artist Julie St Aubyn is exhbiting her work at Pomona Railway Station Gallery.

LOCAL artist Julie St Aubyn is exhibiting drawings at Pomona Railway Station Gallery about from her time in hotel quarantine. Julie said that when she found herself spending two weeks in hotel quarantine, she was lucky to be equipped with drawing equipment as well as a view of a wetland and the abundant bird life that lived there. “Each day I listened to

the radio and recorded my thoughts and observations in drawings. “In the past year I have used these sketches as the basis for a series of paintings that form the framework of my show.” The show, titled Adorned by Magnolia, Brenda meets the Lyrebird, is being held in the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from Saturday 4 December to Thursday 30 December.

Romany’s Mum, Kym, told the Cooroy Rag that she won it last year for building an app for kids to prevent cyber bullying, and this year she won for building an app for cyber safety online. “Her apps will be developed further and

Students create stunning new mural After returning from maternity leave in Semester 2020, Noosa District State High School Pomona campus teacher Rebecca Tierney, together with her ART082C and ART072I students and the Art Club, have created a new mural. Mrs Tierney and her art students undertook the mammoth task during lunch breaks and some class time to create a mural to

cover a graffitied wall near the Pomona tuckshop. The mural has been designed in consultation with the school’s Indigenous Liaison Officer Kajal Charlton to ensure that it is culturally significant to the area. The talent in this school community is absolutely outstanding.

He is interested in all aspects of general practice with particular interest in men’s health and children’s health. He also performs minor procedures, skin cancer work, implanon insertion. BUILT on the passion of its volunteers, the Mary Valley Rattler (pictured above) has won the Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer or a Volunteer Group at the 2021 Queensland Tourism Awards That translated into an award for the guest experience, with the Mary Valley Rattler also winning the Silver Award for Queensland’s Best Tourism Attraction. Mary Valley Rattler General Manager Micheal Green said that after 18 months of incredibly challenging condi-

tions for the Rattler and the wider Gympie tourism community, the two awards were a fantastic endorsement of the team’s total commitment to delivering an exceptional experience. ‘It was with great pride and excitement that I was privileged to witness this recognition of the Mary Valley Rattler volunteers at the Queensland Tourism Awards. “The Rattler has received many awards in its short lifespan, but this particular award really captures the essence of what we do. Our

volunteers are the steam that drives the pistons of this attraction. “The Gympie region should be proud of the many successes that this tourist attraction has achieved since the re-commencement of operations in 2018. “The volunteers can also take credit for Mary Valley Rattler being recognised with the Silver Award in Queensland’s Best Tourism Attraction category. “I am very proud of the dedication and achievements that the Rattler team has accomplished.”

The NPA Saturday Walkers conduct shorter walks (5 to 10kms) of an easier grade and so their activities are more suitable for beginners or those who want less arduous walks, as theirs take two to three hours. The Sunday Walkers’ activities may be significantly longer (8 to 20kms) and are usually undertaken on more rugged terrain, so they last three to six hours. There are many more walks to explore. Variety helps Yandina’s quest to retain Cow Bell THE Lake MacDonald Fresh Water Fishing Association has enjoyed their last fishing outing for the year. The 2021 Toby Brown Cow Bell Competition finished our fishing year with a bag full of fish for most of those who competed. Cooroy had 19 anglers and Yandina six, with Yandina retaining the trophy on countback. Cooroy had 93.85 points with 60 bass and one yellow belly weighed in, while Yandina had 159.5 points with 24 bass and 11 catfish. The majority of Cooroy fishermen used lures and caught bass and yellow belly, while the minority who were using bait, all got bass only. The Yandina fishermen who used bait caught only bass and managed to find a good catfish hole, while the lure fisherman got only bass. This gave the Yandina team more points as a result of catching a second species, and good numbers, as bag limits apply. The secret weight jackpot of $100, donated by Bart and Melissa, was won by Paul from Cooroy Club. Being a new member of the club, this was Bart’s second outing. In the last competition, he hooked a couple but did not get them in the boat. He did his homework, because this competition he landed 36 bass, but being only able to weigh in five per bag limit, released all 36 with a big kiss to each one. It may be best for Melissa to sleep in the spare bedroom until his fish breath settles down! Over 200 fish were caught and put back for another day. Eli Manning took out the Junior Award with five bass. He landed his first two with his first two casts, making his dad, granddad and Uncle Gary look like amateurs.

Junior winner Eli Manning, above, and below: Cooroy club president Peter Arch hands the Cow Bell Trophy back to Yandina Club president Ray Neisler.

He saved the biggest for the last, a 41cm, again out fishing his family who couldn’t break the 40cm mark. Overall, it was the perfect day for fishing, being fine, sunny and not too hot, with a gentle breeze, so the fish were on the chew. First place went to Ray (Y), second Ricky (Y), third Paul (C), fourth Ronny (Y) and fifth Kevin (Y). Well done to all who competed. Only two fishermen missed out on a catch. Our break up party was held at Saw & Mill on 27 November with a game of barefoot bowls for a change of pace. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and are looking forward to the new fishing season in 2022.

Merry Christmas!

Good Shepherd Lutheran College celebrate after downing Mountain Creek in their Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools grand final.

Good Shepherd sweeps to finals win GOOD Shepherd Lutheran College topped the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Basketball Association Competition’s Intermediate A Division with a 63-47 grand final win over Mountain Creek State High School. The Good Shepherd squad posted a sixth place overall at the Queensland Basketball Schools Junior Secondary Competition earlier last month. Good Shepherd Basketball Coordinator Mike Mooney was thrilled with his

team’s performance. “This group of boys is not only individually very talented, but they play and support each other as a team both on and off the floor,” he said. “I’m proud of their Sunshine Coast Schools Championship and that they finished in sixth place overall in the Queensland competition. “I’m also extremely pleased to see how these boys have worked unselfishly together to excel as a team.

“I’m excited to see what they will accomplish in the senior competitions over the next couple of years.” Basketball continues to be one of the most popular sports at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, with more than 80 secondary students suited up across 11 teams this year. Every court around the school is filled with players before school as well as at morning and afternoon breaks.

Sailing is a sport that is enjoyed in various forms all over the globe. From offshore ocean sailing to junior classes, sailing has something to offer everyone. Sailing teaches many important skills that can be used in all aspects of life. These include leadership and teamwork, as well as more tangible skills such as weather and wind reading and knot tying. It is generally a mixed sport, with males and females sailing with or against each other, especially in junior classes, but even in some Olympic classes.

Sailing has been a key part of the Olympics since its first appearance back in 1900. Cootharaba Sailing Club offers a family friendly “Learn to Sail” program on Sunday mornings at Boreen Point . But in the meantime, the sun is shining my lovely people, so get out on the water and dive right in!
