Local TV show idea a winner

FILMING for a brand new TV show has been going on in Pomona after a local video producer won an annual screen industry competition.

Kin Kin’s Anita Poteri won the 2023 Sunny Coast Showdown unscripted category for the idea, My Dream Hideout.

Anita, owner of production company Itchy Feet Media, said My Dream Hideout is about making dreams come true by creating custom hideouts for adults and kids.

“The idea came from a meeting with Pomona residents and winners of The Block 2020, Jimmy and Tam Wilkins.”

Jimmy and Tam moved to Pomona in 2021. Tam owns Pomona homewares store, Velzy Lane and Jimmy is the owner of Belarc Plumbing and Gasfitting.

“We brainstormed ideas for a TV show that they could present, and after the meeting I developed the idea My Dream Hideout and wrote up a pitch and format of the show,” Anita said.

Hosted by Jimmy and Tam and their seven-year-old daughter Frankie (pictured), Anita said My Dream Hideout is the show where they turn the wildest hideaway dreams into a jaw-dropping reality.

“From cozy fishing shacks to futuristic space-themed hideouts and vibrant art-inspired spaces to serene yoga domes nestled in the trees – we make any dream hideout a reality.”

Starting with an empty shipping container, the hideout is built off-site in a shed in Pomona, and then delivered to the ‘hero’ to surprise them.

“Our first hideout was for a hero in Noosa.

“Our team worked tirelessly to make sure every detail was perfect. We had Cooran-based builder Trent Mclellan help us with the build, and Pomona’s This Bird artist Tia Carrigan painted a mural.

“Making dreams a reality is hard work but it's also incredibly fun and rewarding. We loved seeing the joy on our hero's face when we revealed their custom hideout.”

Filming for the show took place over three days in Pomona, Noosa and Sunshine Beach.

“We filmed in Pomona, Waves of Kindness in Noosaville, Pomona recycling yard, Sunshine Beach and at the hero’s house in Noosa Heads.

“Jimmy, Tam and Frankie are the brains trust of the operation. They are great characters and natural in front of the camera.

SOME would say I am tenacious. Others might say I am like a dog with a bone.

Essentially, once I start something, I never give up.

From the archives

IN 1984, the Noosa District Junior Rugby League season began with trials against Gympie at Gympie on Saturday 24 March ahead of the competition starting on Saturday 31 March.

The Cooroy Creek memorial was a prime example of this. For two long years, we (the Cooroy Rag staff) worked tirelessly to achieve a result for the families.

And when we presented the seat to the families, it was an honour.

This is what the Cooroy Rag is all about. We represent the community, give it a voice and champion and advocate its causes.

Every couple of months we reach out to Woolworths to see if there is any ‘new’ news in regards to the community consultation for the proposed Cooroy supermarket. Every time, we get the same response of nothing new to report, but because they know we are keen to stay across the development, they say we (the Cooroy Rag) will be the first to know.

We are also still working on the old Cooroy Butter Factory well. Since lifting the lid on the decades-old mystery, we have worked at length with council, government departments and authorities to obtain an outcome for the community.

After more than two years, we are getting closer. Watch this space.

We have a list of ongoing stories – stories we have broken, developments we are following, and continuing local issues – that we regularly check for any new news we can bring to the community.

This is our job – and it is an absolute pleasure.

A sports report published in the Cooroy Rag on 14 March 1984 said training was conducted on alternate Wednesdays at the Tewantin Sporting Complex and the Cooroy Showground.

“Experienced coaches were arranged for most teams – including Noosa A grade

and district representatives Gary Christensen and Shane Beetson and local league identity Col Christensen.”

In this photo, Barry Shanks, Michael Taranow and David Christensen watched Russell

Britten from Eumundi try his hand at catching a ball at a practice session of the Noosa Rugby League Juniors. Cooroy Rag Vol. 14 No 11 March 14 1984.

“We are most impressed with Frankie, who nailed it when it came to filming My Dream Hideout.”

Tam said it was wonderful having Frankie involved.

“It was the first time we’ve been able to work with her on something and being able to see her blossom was beautiful but it's a bit annoying when a seven-year-old is better at delivering their lines than you are.”

Tam said being back in the renovation space and

behind the camera was an incredible experience.

“This show is really exciting because there is a recycled element to it. It’s cool seeing all recycled items from around the area reused in the hideout.

“Filming was so fun. It was great being back behind the camera again and for an unscripted reality.

“It would be amazing if My Dream Hideout was able to become something bigger because it is such a cool idea.

“One of the best parts of this show is that it's for a

wide variety of people – it could be a space den for a six-year-old or a knitting nook for an 80-year-old. It could be anything for anyone.”

Editing of the show is now underway in preparation for the Sunny Coast Showdown Showcase Festival on 24 June.

“We're currently in the final stages of editing with Pomona-based editor Bob Sneddon, and will share a 10-minute version of My Dream Hideout on social media after the awards night on 24 June.

“It is our hope My Dream Hideout will be picked up by a network and go to series so we can make a lot of people’s dreams come true and create lasting memories for our future heroes on the Sunshine Coast.”

Anita said My Dream Hideout wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Sunny Coast Showdown and their sponsors.

“We're incredibly grateful to all our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Bendigo Bank, for making the Sunny Coast Showdown Showcase Festival possible.

“Sunny Coast Showdown connected me with the talented Lisa Fitzpatrick, an experienced TV program developer, who provided mentorship and support throughout the process. Coincidentally, she lives in the next street to me in Kin Kin and we had never met.

“Dan Munday and his Showdown team have also been very supportive.”

On the beat

A 66-YEAR-OLD local man has been charged with one charge of indecent assault after he allegedly assaulted a young female motorist who stopped and gave him a lift home. The male is to appear in the Noosa Magistrates Court in the near future to answer the above-mentioned charge. The male was located and arrested by Cooroy Police within an hour of the offence occurring as the allegations are extremely concerning in nature and police acted immediately to bring this person into custody.

Most police officers join the job to help people and contribute in some way to making society a better place. Very often, it’s like swimming against the tide and the feeling of it all being a hopeless cause is often close to the surface. That’s why police officers must be a resilient and optimistic lot, which I must say is very much the case.

It’s true to say police officers must concentrate on the good and not dwell on the bad. I was recently left with a spring in my step after arresting two thieves red-handed in a stolen car and thankfully able to recover the car in good condition for a relieved young lady who had, unfortunately, let her comprehensive insur-

ance lapse on the vehicle and was set to be paying off her car for a very long time that she did not even have.

It’s these times that police officers remember. The times when we are able to make a difference in some person’s life even in a small way really make it all worthwhile.

Calling this young lady up late at night was a great pleasure and after introducing myself to her, her first words were, “Oh God, please tell me you’ve found my car.”

To say she was ecstatic would be an understatement and she was so appreciative it really warmed my heart and made me remember that this is why every police officer does the job we do and takes the good with the bad.

I suppose I could dwell on the fact that these two lowlives who had her car did not for one fleeting moment consider the impact of their action upon this poor young lady’s life but to do so would only perpetuate negativity that can’t be allowed to grow.

So this is a friendly but forceful reminder to lock up.

Sneak offences on the Coast continue to be a problem, with offenders entering houses whilst occupied through unlocked doors and windows generally late at night to steal wallets and car keys and then joyride in

the stolen cars committing other crimes. And check your insurances are all up to date as we often go to traffic crashes and thefts where unfortunately people have let their policies lapse.

I’d also like to pay tribute to our firefighters for the very dangerous and professional job they do, after the tragic and untimely death of Izabella Nash whilst fighting a fire in Brisbane recently. This truly tragic event further highlights the job that our firies do, day in, day out, whilst protecting life and property.

The recent death of an on-duty paramedic, Steven Tougher, also highlights the very real dangers faced by our front-line paramedics when attending calls for service. I am good friends with many firies and ambos and have been assisted numerous times by them and am always amazed at the professionalism that both services display.

From the calibre of our local lads, I would definitely want these boys and girls showing up at any incident that involved me or my family, where help was needed.

New streetscape for Eumundi

EUMUNDI’S main street is set to receive a new streetscape. The community-led vision will reflect the township's character, with more outdoor seating experiences, leafy shade areas, safer pedestrian crossings, and art and heritage interpretation to keep history alive.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 Councillor David Law said the final design was being completed after a key stakeholder workshop last month.

“Passionate community groups, including Save the Memorial Drive Campaign,

businesses and key stakeholders, joined council to deliver a shared outcome

“Thank you to the community groups, businesses and residents who have been on this journey with council and attended this final session to

shape the future of Eumundi's main street.” Following the workshop, a detailed design will be completed and construction of the Eumundi streetscape upgrade will commence in late 2023.

Kin Kin on national

THE tensions between a hinterland community and a local business have made national news.

A segment about the plight of the Save Noosa Hinterland group against Cordwell Resources operations and quarry trucks recently aired on A Current Affair Save Noosa Hinterland spokesperson Nick Cooke said they are pleased with the segment.

“We reached out to A Current Affair, they expressed interest, and so we sent them statements from our members. Lots of people wrote in with what they're experiencing and how they're impacted.

“We also sent them footage and they went through our online footage and soon after they agreed to come.

I think the severity of the impacts on the community is what got them here.”

More than sixty people turned up at Sheppersons Lane, Kin Kin on 10 May for the filming.

“We didn’t make it public; just shared it amongst our members. We had a good turnout.

“A few people spoke to

the media. We appreciated A Current Affair coming out because so many wanted to have their say and we wanted the truth of the situation to be portrayed.”

The hinterland community and Noosa Council staff are still awaiting the final decision of the Planning and Environment Court relating to the Kin Kin Quarry case.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said Noosa Council recently convened a meeting of the Kin Kin Roundtable members to provide an update on the legal case and hear the ongoing community concerns.

“We’ve made it clear that we stand with the community on this matter and understand the community’s angst as we all await the judgement.

“Given the complexity of the legal arguments and large volume of material, we understand that it takes time for the decision to be handed down.

“Our legal team has done an exceptional job arguing our community’s case, and now the outcome is in the hands of the court,” Cr Stewart said.

Council’s Acting CEO Larry Sengstock said Council continues to monitor the Quarry Management Plan to ensure Cordwell Resources are complying with the Quarry Management Plan, but given the current court proceedings, residents have been made aware that Council must wait for the current legal proceedings to be finalised prior to taking any further action.

“We have invested considerable resources into this legal case and, like the impacted community, hope for a favourable outcome from His Honour,” Mr Sengstock said.

Nick said they're grateful to A Current Affair for raising awareness on a national level about the suffering of the hinterland community.

“We want more people to know about what we’re facing in the hinterland. We want the government to see the scale and intensity of what’s happening.

“After the segment aired, we’ve had more people join our Facebook page, more people join our group, and people have reached out to us from all over Australia.”

Mary Basin water plan submissions extended

THE closing date for submissions for the draft Mary Basin water plan has been extended, much to the relief of the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group (STMRCG) Inc.

STMRCG president Glenda Pickersgill said submissions have been extended until 26 May.

“This is a welcome relief as there is a lot of information to consider about how a new water plan can impact us and the river. This is the first revision of the Mary Basin 2006 plan that justified the defunct Traveston Crossing Dam.”

The Mary Basin water plan area comprises five river catchments – Burrum, Mary, Noosa, Maroochy and Mooloolah – and several water supply schemes as well as eight major storages, including Six Mile Creek, Cooloolabin, Wappa, Poona, Baroon Pocket and Ewen Maddock dams.

“The model used for the entire catchment is quite complicated and with very little explanation particularly as there has been no hydrology report published to the public with assumptions and scenarios implications.

“With the conversion of area licences to the volume of water taken for un-supple-

mented creeks, still a strategic reserve of about half that which was modelled for the 2006 plan, there appear to be more risks to the river, the estuary, Great Sandy Strait and Great Barrier Reef.

“There needs to be more measuring of flow and water quality in real-time, particularly for critical dry times.”

Glenda said the public concern is that the draft Mary Basin water plan does not even adequately protect the surface waters of the catchment area.

“There are concerns about over-allocation of unsupplemented creeks, overuse of groundwater that is not being considered, inadequate monitoring of both flow and water quality, and ensuring that there are sufficient freshwater flows to protect the Great Sandy Strait Ramsar wetlands and the world heritage Fraser Island [K’gari].

“There are claims that there is still a strategic reserve available to take more water from the Mary River when local residents know from watching through the dry periods that it isn’t available. It is the long dry conditions that are the most concern with the predictions of increasing temperatures

and evaporation.

“There are climate-independent opportunities to recycle water, improve efficiencies and reduce demand for water and desalination (particularly for coastal cities) that should be considered before allocating more water from the surface waters of the Mary River.”

Glenda said there are also concerns about the threatened species and plant communities that would be impacted by the Borumba pumped hydro proposal.

“The link is that the minister claims that the proposed Borumba hydro scheme would meet the environmental flow conditions of the Mary Basin water plan. However, no information has been made publically to back up that claim.”

The community can have their say on the draft Mary Basin water plan before 5 pm on 26 May here: rdmw. qld.gov.au/water/consultations-initiatives/mary-basinwater-plan.

Meanwhile, plans are full steam ahead for a great Mary River Festival 2023 on Saturday 15 July at Kandanga. Stallholder applications close on 26 May and info is available at: maryriverfestival.org.au.

Tough trek for people doing it tough

A LOCAL woman is trekking approximately 165 kilometres over seven days to raise money and awareness for mental health.

Yandina’s Melanie Silk will hike the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in November to hopefully raise $15,000 for the Black Dog Institute.

Melanie said this is a cause very close to her heart.

“I chose to do this due to my own struggles with my mental health over the years, my father’s, and many of my friends’ who all have their own struggles.

“By doing this trek, I will help create awareness surrounding mental illness

and suicide.

“We all know someone doing it tough.”

Melanie said the Kokoda Track is only passable on foot.

“It cuts across rugged, isolated terrain, razor-edged ridges, over steep towering mountains reaching a height of 2,490 m (8,169 ft) and descends deep into the rainforest. The days will be long, hot, and humid, with intensely cold nights and torrential rainfall.”

So far, Melanie has raised over $6,000 of her $15,000 goal and is asking anyone willing to spare the cost of a cup of coffee to support her cause.

“Your generosity will help the Black Dog Institute to improve the lives of people impacted by mental health and suicide.

“My trip has been fully paid for by myself and all donations received will go directly to the institute and are fully tax-deductible with a receipt supplied.”

Anyone who would like to donate can do so here: teamblackdog.org.au/fundraisers/silkmelanie/kokoda-2023.

Small businesses benefit from charter

“They generate local employment, contribute to the local economy and offer essential goods and services to our community.

“With this initiative, we’re pledging to keep the needs of our many small businesses in mind when making decisions.”

NOOSA Council has signed a charter making a commitment to the shire’s 7,000 small businesses.

The Small Business Friendly Councils (SBFC) charter aims to recognise and encourage councils to actively support small businesses.

Council’s Environment and Sustainable Development Director, Kim Rawlings, said council offers a range of support options for small businesses, and signing the charter reaffirms the organisation’s

commitment to the sector.

“Noosa Shire is home to just over 7,000 GST-registered businesses. Our ability to engage and deliver services to the business community is a critical factor in the future success of the Noosa Shire economy.

“We’re proud to sign the charter and excited to explore new possibilities to support our business community in their dealings with council.”

Mayor Clare Stewart said small businesses play a vital role in our community.

By signing the SBFC charter, Noosa Council has made a commitment to small businesses to communicate and engage, raise the profile and capability of small business, support resilience and recovery, simplify administration and regulation (red tape reduction), ensure fair procurement and prompt payment terms, and promote placebased activities.

The Small Business Friendly Councils program is overseen by the Queensland Small Business Commissioner. Find out more about the Small Business Friendly Councils (SBFC) Program at business.qld.gov.au/qsbc or by phoning 1300 312 344.

Yandina tattoo studio creating for the people

A COUPLE with a love for art merged their creativity to form a boutique tattoo studio in Yandina.

Ryan and Astrid created The People’s Ink in 2017.

Astrid said they wanted to create a tattoo studio that was unlike any other on the Sunshine Coast.

“It is our mission to ensure that we provide our clients with the most positive experience possible.

“At The People’s Ink, our team is dedicated to making this their utmost priority. As soon as our clients walk through the doors we want them to feel welcomed, supported, heard and respected.

“No matter who our client is, what their background is or how they present, we want their interaction and experience with us to be the best part of their day.”

While Astrid runs the business side of things, Ryan is the head artist.

“Ryan is an experienced and skilful tattooist who is well known for his fine line tattoo work and ability to turn clients’ concepts into workable tattoos.”

Working alongside their clients to create the tattoo

New owners, name, for Pomona childcare

Nerida said their aim, along with their enthusiastic team led by director Leonie MacCartie, is to further the centre’s nature and bush kinder program and to develop the onsite bush kinder space for the children and educators to begin campfires, camp cooking and bush kinder daily experiences.

Music lessons have also begun weekly at the centre and early childhood yoga with Stacey from Wholehearted and Limitless Yoga.

A POMONA childcare centre has new owners and a new name.

In March 2023, Pomona Early Childhood Centre had a change of ownership and became Pomona Kindergarten & Early Years Learning.

Nerida and Craig Atkinson, both teachers, purchased the centre from Cathy and Greg Cowie.

Nerida said they are excited about the years that lie ahead with their fantastic team.

“We are passionate about early years learning and the importance of the first five years of a child’s life and learning and we are so blessed to be able to continue to spread this with

our fantastic team who are so incredibly passionate and dedicated.”

With a nature-based philosophy and play being at the heart of their early childhood philosophy, Craig and Nerida want every child to have the chance to believe in the magic of childhood.

“I have degrees in early childhood, primary and secondary teaching, music and educational leadership and am also a qualified bush kinder forest leader.

“Craig has degrees in music and education and is always behind the scenes busily making sure all the opportunities and experiences are possible for myself and the team to engage in.”

“These classes are held on Thursday and are so important for all our children as they navigate and build the self-help skills that will guide them throughout their years.

“Learning is a lifelong love and we want to foster and support this for all our children and educators in our service. We are so looking forward to the second half of the year and continuing to grow and share the wonderful opportunities that our children and educators will be engaging in.

“We hope we can help many more children believe in the magic of childhood.”

THE Queensland Government Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy, underpinned by a waste disposal levy that commenced on 1 July 2019, provides the strategic framework for Queensland to become a zero waste society, where waste to landfill is avoided, reused or recycled to the greatest extent possible. The strategy introduces a focus on transitioning to a circular economy. The purpose of the levy is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, encourage waste avoidance, provide a source of funding to enable better resource recovery practices and facilitate investment in resource recovery infrastructure.

Despite measures to increase recycling to date, the volumes of waste generated and going to landfill are on the increase and we really need to start implementing measures to stop our reliance on landfill. We need to look at how we can better reuse, repurpose and repair items we would otherwise

discard and ensure they can be recycled at the end of their life rather than digging a hole in the ground to bury them, which only creates a myriad of other problems. This is how we can create a circular, rather than linear, solution.

States to our south have had waste levies in place for a number of years ahead of Queensland adopting a levy, and various State Environment Authorities have been implementing plans to facilitate a range of measures for councils to reduce waste to landfill and encourage resource recovery initiatives. One of the most significant items that currently ends up in landfill is food waste, and numerous NSW, Victorian and South Australian councils are at the forefront of implementing FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) collection systems to prevent this resource from ending up in landfill, among a raft of other waste reduction measures.

Queensland councils will have to start looking at

similar measures to meet the state’s waste reduction targets. Three councils are already undertaking trials of food waste diversion programs from landfill funded by the waste levy. Food waste can be turned into compost, a valuable resource, rather than being landfilled. I’m writing this having just attended a three-day national conference on Waste Reduction and Resource Recovery in an effort to learn from the programs being implemented by councils in other states.

Our council went out for public consultation in the first quarter of this year with a waste questionnaire which will help to inform our waste strategy for the next five years and beyond. A draft strategy will be out for further consultation later this year incorporating those responses and measures our community will need to undertake to meet the Queensland Government’s waste reduction targets. For more information on the State Government’s Waste Levy visit: qld.gov.au/ environment/management/ waste/recovery/disposal-levy/about/overview or council’s Waste Services: noosa.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/waste-recycling

THINGS are certainly moving forward, with the issue of tender documents for the landslide repair at Black Mountain coming only a week after design concepts were endorsed by the Qld Reconstruction Authority. We hope to have a contractor in place as soon as possible and all at Council are incredibly pleased to have reached this milestone in issuing this multi-million-dollar tender. The process has been involved and complex, with engineers grappling with the complexities and challenges of restoring such a significant landslip. The landslide is as wide as a rugby playing field and as deep as a five-storey building. It’s the largest-ever reconstruction tender to be issued by Noosa Council. The challenges are ongoing but we are working closely with the community of Black Mountain and all affected on a continual basis and we thank them for their ongoing patience.

The 10 km track, formally known as Trail 5, which links Pomona to Cooran is now

open again following an upgrade. Works included trail re-alignments, selective widening, re-surfacing, drainage and new wayfinding and interpretative signage. Part of the Noosa Trails Masterplan, the upgrade aims to improve town connectivity, increase trail use for education and recreation, drive tourism and enhance the trail’s effectiveness as a fire break. Following the success of the Cooroora Trail upgrade, priority upgrades of Trail 7 (Yurol Trail) will follow later this year.

At Noosa Council, we’ve reaffirmed our commitment to Noosa’s 7000-plus small businesses with the signing of the Small Business Friendly Councils Charter. It’s timely given that May is Small Business Month. The Small Business Friendly Council program, overseen by the Qld Small Business Commissioner, aims to recognise and encourage councils to actively support small businesses.

The 2023-2028 Corporate Plan is a major overhaul

of the previous plan and is based around five strategic pillars – Environment, Liveability, Prosperity, Future and Excellence – and it has now been adopted by Council. It sets out the future, looks at the opportunities and challenges, and determines how best we can capitalise on emerging digital trends and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will also ensure Council decisions over the next five years focus on protecting Noosa’s amenities, enhancing lifestyles and preserving the shire’s rich natural environment.

Finally, please make use of some great social and lifestyle programs that council facilitates. Have a go at Wellness Wednesdays where we offer locals a chance to take a break from work on Wednesday lunchtimes and join in with our yoga classes. Or alternatively, join the Sip and Social coffee hour in Cooroy every Saturday from 9 to 10 am for stimulating conversations with fellow residents. Bring your friends along and spread the word. For more information, visit Living Well Noosa on council’s website: noosa.qld.gov. au/living-well-noosa.

Until next month, stay safe, Clare

Joe Jurisevic Councillor for Noosa Shire

THE Federal Government has now delivered its first full-year Budget and while there are some encouraging elements, there is concern that $185 billion in additional expenditure will add to inflation and put more pressure on interest rates, making it even harder for people with mortgages to balance their budgets.

The Budget’s increase in wages for aged care workers is a positive step, as is the response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which include addressing the backlog of veterans’ claims and improving the processing of claims, as well as funding suicide intervention training programs for the ex-service community.

The Budget predicts that unemployment will rise, there will be no growth in real wages this year, and inflation will remain stubbornly high. A one-off payment on one electricity bill will provide relief for some, but last October’s budget predicted a 56

per cent increase in electricity bills over 18 months.

Unfortunately, there are elements of this Budget that only exacerbate the rising cost of living. There is a new tax on farmers, who are being asked to pay for the biosecurity costs of imported food, and the 19 per cent heavy vehicle road user charge hike over the next three years will increase transportation costs and be passed onto consumers.

There is one forecast in the Budget that I am particularly concerned about. The Budget predicts that over the next five years, net overseas migration will rise by 1.5 million people, placing even more strain on housing and rental accommodation, roads and infrastructure and health and medical services. Already our roads are congested, our hospitals are full, and there is a housing shortage and rental crisis, but the Budget doesn’t detail the massive investment that will be required to service the massive surge in population – and without that massive

investment, every Australian’s living standards will fall. The Federal Government needs to do more to attract doctors to small communities like Imbil and Pomona to ensure people have local access to GP services. I had hoped this Budget would correct Labor’s amendments to the Distribution Priority Area classification, which made it more attractive for doctors to practise in outer metropolitan areas instead of regional communities like Wide Bay. Unfortunately, there was no change to this warped policy.

Increased Medicare rebates to encourage more doctors to bulk bill children, pensioners and other Commonwealth concession card holders have the potential to assist in improving healthcare affordability for some people but the general practitioner and medical and allied health workforce shortage in parts of Wide Bay is an ongoing issue that I, together with the Primary Health Network, continue to work on. Llew

AFTER the latest disgraceful incident in Maryborough, Queenslanders understandably have had enough when it comes to repeat youth offenders, including our police. If you haven’t read my speech on the latest measures passed by government, you can do so at SandyBolton.com/Parliament/Speeches. As one of only five MPs who voted in favour of an amendment in Parliament to see mandatory one-year sentencing for recidivist youth offenders convicted of stealing more than two cars, I am equally frustrated, especially with the ongoing lack of support for remote relocation or diversion sentencing.

In Parliament, our unrelenting advocacy continues for a review of Queensland’s committee system; if our ‘de facto’ Upper House is not fixed, we will continue to see results that fall far short of what Noosa, and indeed Queensland, needs and expects. Ultimately, we must repair the foundation upon which decisions are made;

otherwise, it is just like painting over rotten timber –might look good, but hides the real issue. My speech on the proposed caps to local government election campaign spending included experiences from my time as a councillor. Whilst decreases are another step in the right direction, there are concerns that the proposed cap is still too high for smaller shires such as Noosa. $30,000 is a lot of money, especially for those who are not aligned to a political party, and as MPs raised, politicising local government is a backward step for Queensland. This is why more than ever we need independent representatives who are focused on their community – not party stances, ideology, or career paths. Ensuring the integrity of our elections is vital, which includes fixing associated processes such as ending voter data harvesting by political parties which saw overwhelming support in our last community survey. We can make the change; however, it takes all who are tired of

being ‘hoodwinked’ to stand up and say ‘enough, is enough’! On the homefront, as shared via Facebook and sent to our newsletter subscribers, we are seeking views of Noosa Electorate residents via a survey on Clothing Optional Beaches, which has the following two questions as well as space to make comments:

1. Would you support Queensland laws changing to allow for legalised clothing-optional beaches?

2. If yes, would you support Alexandria Bay at Noosa National Park, as a legalised clothing-optional beach in Queensland? The survey closes on 24 May with further information at bit.ly/ COBSurvey2023.

With so much time between columns and so much to share, please stay in the loop via Noosa 360 with updates on a range of important issues we are working on, including with Nicklin MP Rob Skelton regarding those dangerous Cooroy intersections.

Always, for any questions or assistance regarding state-related matters, please contact my office at 5319 3100 or email noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Until next month, Sandy

Noosa Museum undergoes restoration

ONE of Pomona’s oldest buildings has been undergoing extensive renovations.

Noosa Shire Museum is housed in the original Noosa Shire Council offices built in 1910.

Noosa Museum president Anne Coombes said they have been slowly restoring the historic building for the past year.

“In consultation with a heritage architect, we have taken out some walls and pulled up the old blue carpet and the well-worn linoleum from the 1970s underneath to expose the beautiful original timber floorboards.

“These will be oiled as they originally were when the building was built but we are waiting for air-conditioning to be installed and the internal painting to be completed first.”

Anne said they applied for grants to help with the process of this massive restoration work.

“The museum was able to obtain a grant of $35,000 from the

Gambling Community Benefit Fund which will pay for internal painting and air-conditioning of the building.

“We also received a grant of $5,500 from Noosa Council Community Grants for the display cases in the History of Place room. We also received a second grant from the Cooroy RSL Club which was used for the purchase of 20 chairs.”

Other grants have been applied to help with IT improvements, the military display, the fire truck refurbishment, and interior doors.

The old office space has been transformed into the History of Place room where one can discover information about hinterland settlements.

“In time gone by, the hinterland was the Noosa Shire. This is where all the industries were. Timber, dairy, and fruit were the main ones, with other smaller industries as required to sustain the community.

“Beautiful display boxes and stands have been purchased to display artifacts from various areas around the Noosa Shire. This room is still a work in prog-

Researcher talks crayfish at forum

THREATENED crayfish species is the topic of this month’s Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Forum on 26 May.

Grace Smith is a PhD candidate from the Ventura Lab at the University of the Sunshine Coast. As a researcher, Grace uses environmental DNA (eDNA) to monitor crayfish distribution and identify potential threats to their survival.

Through her research, Grace aims to increase awareness of the importance of conserving these species and their habitats.

At the Friday Forum, Grace will discuss the evolution of the Euastacus and Cherax genera and provide insights into the current threats to these crayfish species, as well as discuss the applications of eDNA technology to other species and some of the more general research occurring in these unique habitats.

Then, on Friday 9 June, Birds Queensland president Andrew Thelander who spent four months in the Amazon regions of Peru, Colombia and Brazil –living, travelling and witnessing

the rapid changes affecting the natural environment there –will bring his extensive birding and photography experience to Friday Forum for his talk ‘Travelling and Birding in the Amazon-local style’.

Everyone is welcome at the

Friday Forums at the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The forum starts at 10:30 am and morning tea is available from 10 to 10:25 am. Entry is $5 by ‘tap & go’ at the door and includes morning tea/coffee.

ress but in time, it too will be a real treasure of beauty and knowledge.”

Anne said the council will be painting the outside of the building during the second half of the year and removing asbestos from the interior.

“Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers who have been working hard in their various roles to make all this happen.”

Adult leaders wanted

COOROORA Emergency Services Cadets need adult leaders.

Adults over 18 are being encouraged to help build the next generation of emergency services personnel while sharpening their own skills.

Emergency Services Cadets program coordinator Nicole Doyle said cadets are aged 12–17 years and meet one night a week to train with volunteers and professionals who are passionate about emergency preparedness and response skills.

“Adult leaders share their skills, encourage volunteering, help connect the cadets into the community and can even obtain a Cert II in Public Safety.”

For more information or to apply, contact Nicole on 0458 259 325 or emergencyservicescadets@pcyc.org.au.

Better banking. Big

The Power of Community Sponsorship

DID you know that who you bank with can make a real difference in your community? Bendigo Bank’s Tewantin-Noosa, Cooroy, and Marcoola branches have demonstrated this with their Community Bank model that is designed to provide financial services to local communities.

Unlike major banks that have left some towns, Community Banks prioritise face-to-face banking, supporting local economic growth, and operating on a profit-with-purpose model where up to 80% of profits are returned to the communities that generate them. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services, which operates the Community Banks, is committed to giving back to the community. Their recent efforts have been extraordinary, with the bank providing financial support to local groups and events such as the Hoofbeats Art Exhibition, Peregian Digital Hub Meet Up events, Permaculture Noosa’s Community Pavilion, Noosa Community Garden’s pathways, and the upcoming Pomona King of the Mountain. By enriching

the community spirit and connecting people from all ages and abilities, these initiatives demonstrate the impact of community sponsorship.

The Community Bank is now the premier sponsor for the Noosa Pirates Open Women’s team, which has enabled them to further develop their talent in 2023.

The bank supports nearly all surf lifesaving clubs from Noosa to Mudjimba, providing much-needed funding for training and equipment which help save lives.

The Noosa Coast Guard also keeps our community safe on the water 24/7 and

members were relieved when the Community Bank took overas major sponsor with a 3-year commitment to support this vital service. Through their Community Bank model, Bendigo Bank’s Tewantin-Noosa, Cooroy, and Marcoola branches have poured over $2.9 million back into the local community to date, with more major funding announcements to come this financial year. The customers of these local branches should be proud that their banking is making such a significant difference to their communities.

Wearing red for heart health

COOROY LiveLife Pharmacy staff were wearing red earlier this month for Heart Health Week.

Owner and pharmacist Jacqueline Meyer said they collaborated with their good friends and colleagues at Eden Private Hospital to help raise awareness of this important issue.

“Heart Week is Australia’s national heart health aware-

ness week held in the first week of May each year. It provides an opportunity for the public and health professionals to start a conversation about heart health and take positive steps to reduce their heart disease risk.

“One Australian has a heart attack or stroke every four minutes but you have the power to change this statistic.

“Heart disease can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and managing stress.

“Check your blood pressure for free at LiveLife Pharmacy.”

LiveLife Pharmacy is at 26 Maple Street, Cooroy.

School celebrates special student

A SPECIAL event has been held for a special Noosa Christian College (NCC) student.

Year 4 student, Blake, was diagnosed with leukaemia when in Year 1. Last December, Blake completed his cancer treatment.

NCC marketing and communications manager Dale Bergman said primary students and staff celebrated Blake and all he has been

through with his chemotherapy treatment, with a special event at the end of April.

“The students formed a guard of honour and blew bubbles and cheered when Blake arrived at school, which was quite a surprise for Blake.

“Students also wrote on bells to signify that Blake ‘rang the bell’ at the hospital after he had his last treatment.”

Cookbook to raise funds

POMONA State School

P&C is launching a cookbook to raise funds for a new playground.

Plates of Pomona will be a collection of country culinary delights from the community. P&C Secretary Jess McNamara said the cookbook will feature over 100 recipes.

“Keeping with the cool country vibe of Pomona our cookbook will showcase the freshest local ingredients, favourite family recipes,

authentic farmhouse food, gourmet treats and fine dining delights.

“It will be a coffee table-style book with over 180 pages and we will be printing over 1000 copies that will be sold via the school, markets and some amazing local stores for $35 each.”

Jess said local businesses have the opportunity to support this initiative by advertising in the cookbook.

“Our cookbook is designed to be one people are proud

to display in their home or business and as such, we want to keep the business branding to a minimum but offer beautiful photography with local business details.”

The advertising booking deadline closes 31 May with the book set to be released in early November.

To learn more or book an advert in the Plates of Pomona cookbook contact Jess on 0408 050 408 or email pomonasspandc@ gmail.com.

Upcoming artists rewarded

NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) has received a cheque from the Cooroy Future Group (CFG) to assist with buying more musical instruments.

Students from the musical faculty performed at the Cooroy Butter Factory at last year’s Christmas In Cooroy.

NDSHS head of music, Ryan Argent, said he was delighted that the students were able to showcase their talents and hopes his music students will be able to engage with other events staged by the CFG.

Artists who performed at the event were Jemzel Costales and Matilda Malone (pictured).

In presenting the cheque to the school, CFG president Kym Neaylon said the group is very aware of assisting the town’s students in the development of their career goals and hoped to provide more opportunities for the students’ talents to be showcased.

Jemzel, who is already an accomplished singer on the

local music scene, writes and records her own songs and uploads them to feature on various social music platforms while Matilda, who has been attending musical theatre classes with a local academy for some time will perform the lead role of Annie in the school’s upcoming musical production.

Positive Behaviour for Learning: ACommunity Approach

NDSHS students are focused on displaying the following behaviours by being active citizens in our community.

You can support our students by:

 Acknowledging when they have a willingness to be involved

 Highlighting when they are prepared in the community

 Recognising when they display initiative in the community

Cooroy gymnast Finlay Jones wins national title

help Queensland to second place in the team event.

“On day two, Finlay was unable to compete on floor or vault due to his injury and had to remove his higher difficulty dismounts from parallel bars, rings and high bar, meaning that he had a much lower starting value on two of his favourite apparatus, but he was still able to finish fourth on high bar, fifth on parallel bars and seventh on rings.”

A COOROY gymnast has defied the odds to win a national title.

Finlay Jones from Cooroy Gymnastics Club competed at the Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast earlier this month to become the level 10 Australian Champion on Pommel Horse.

Coach Greg Smyth said it has been a tough year for the Cooroy gymnast.

“Fin has had to limit his training due to health issues, a brutal university schedule

and an injury.

“The lack of training and preparation in the lead-up to the event meant he was only able to attend one competition and had to adjust his expectations and routines accordingly.”

On the first day of the competition, Finlay injured himself on the first tumbling pass on the floor and was unable to complete his routine.

“Even with his injury, he stepped up to the next and final apparatus to post another team counting score to

Greg said the only apparatus Finlay could land without further injuring his knees was the pommel.

“After not making a routine on pommels all year, Fin dug deep and held on to complete what was a gold medal performance, becoming the level 10 Pommel National Champion.”

Finlay credits his win to the support given to him by his coach Greg, with his understanding and support helping to balance his expectations with his current capacity and maintain a positive outlook in preparation for the event.

George Real Estate celebrates their one-year anniversary

POMONA real estate agents

Brian and Carlene George are celebrating an anniversary.

Their one-year anniversary since starting their own agency, George Real Estate.

Brian said their first year has been incredibly rewarding.

“To say we are pleased with how we feel is an absolute understatement. The community support for us has been so positive that we felt opening and operating our own business was exactly the right thing to do.

“Completing over $14 million of property sales in our first year was more than we anticipated or planned for and shows that there is a need for a ‘people first’ agency in the Noosa hinterland.”

Carlene said their driver is to ensure that their clients and all those they deal

with get the best possible service.

“We offer services such as free property styling for our clients, where we have an expansive collection of quality soft furnishings and small item furniture. We always make sure everything we do is to a high professional standard, and something we know has lacked in this industry is a high level of communication.

“We are all about quality. Showing properties in their best light will always get the best outcome.

“And we are all about the people: looking after and getting the best for our clients but actually caring about everyone involved. Buying and selling real estate is huge for people.

“Also as agents, we are professional and we also care, and have a few laughs along the way.

“Owning our own business

has allowed us the freedom to make decisions based on the needs of our clients.”

Brian said they are looking forward to continuing to build and evolve their business.

“We feel that the real estate environment is dynamic and needs fresh approaches for new challenges and opportunities and we also can’t imagine doing this anywhere else but the Noosa hinterland.”

Carlene said on the day of their one-year anniversary they received a phone call from a prospective buyer.

“She said she’d heard about us and heard that we are the best agency to use in the Noosa hinterland. That was the best gift we could receive.

“George Real Estate is here. We have had a huge first year and we are motivated and extremely excited about the next year.”

Accolades for Countryside Realty Noosa agents

KIMBERLEA and Eliot Krause of Countryside Realty Noosa have won a national real estate award.

The senior sales agents have been awarded the 2023 Real Estate Business Award for Sales Campaign of the Year.

Kimberlea said she and Eliot “could not believe it” when their names were called as winners of the Sales Campaign of the Year.

“To be selected as the best sales campaign in Australia is simply astounding. This isn’t just about the win; for us the biggest accomplishment is knowing the hard work and determination we put into achieving not only the best results for our clients but supporting and nurturing them throughout the sales process has been

recognised at a national level as Australia’s finest.”

Kimberlea said this is a credit not just to them but to their entire Countryside Realty Noosa team.

“We would not be where we are without the support of each and every one of them. We also want to thank our principal, Robyn Kildey, who has always pushed us to be the best we can.

“She brings us together so we all strive for excellence together; being nominated as a finalist for the Small Boutique Independent Agency of the Year is a credit to this.”

Robyn said she is extremely proud of Kim and Eliot for their win.

“After being in business for over 20 years now, it is incredible to be recognised

Meet Noosa Hinterland RE’s newest agent

as finalists in the boutique independent agency category and after 10 years of working alongside Kimberlea it is no surprise they won the Sales Campaign of the Year award.

“The whole team enjoyed a wonderful evening celebrating Kimberlea and Eliot’s win in Sydney. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Kimberlea said they were thrilled to head to Sydney with the team for the award ceremony.

“We took our daughter Everly with us and we made a wish the morning of the awards – I think there was some magic in her little fingers.

“We are so happy and want to congratulate all of the award nominees and winners.”

NOOSA Hinterland Real Estate is proud to introduce its newest sales agent. Meet Simon Adams. Born and bred in a small farming community in Central Queensland, Simon has always had close ties to his country upbringing. So after years of living in Brisbane developing a construction business, Simon and his wife decided to move their family to the Noosa hinterland to take advantage of the wonderful attributes a coast life has to offer and buy a farm to get back to his roots.

Simon has joined Noosa Hinterland Real Estate because he believes in the same values that Sandy and Kate promote through their business. A sense of community, honesty, hard work and attention to detail are all core values that attracted Simon to the business, and it will be these values that provide both buyers and sellers with great outcomes.

With years of experience in all levels of building, construction and development, coupled with his passion for rural properties and farming, Simon is an agent who offers experience on many levels for all clients.

If you are looking for someone with a wealth of experience in business and trading property, call Simon.

Monthly market wrap up

With Sirah Robb, Director and Principal of Hinternoosa Real Estate SENIOR Economist at PropTrack Eleanor Creagh announced in April that national home prices increased for the fourth consecutive month this year. She highlighted, “The cumulative 2023 increase of 0.75% is underpinned by tight supply and stronger housing demand, which is offsetting the impact of interest rate rises.”

At a local level, we saw a strong first quarter of 2023 and continue to see buyer confidence increasing. There was a noticeable

positive response from buyers when interest rates were put on hold in April. Our team put 11 properties under contract that month with an average of 90 groups per week through our open homes plus 19 private inspections per week in April.

Although May saw an interest rate rise, it hasn’t slowed buyers taking action. We have secured contracts on seven properties for our owners in the first two weeks of May so far. Our sellers are achieving positive outcomes by receiving to-the-minute, experienced advice from

our agents who are having honest conversations to ensure our clients’ strategy is appropriate for the current market. It is clear that if you are selling with the wrong strategy in the current market it will really blow out time on market and negatively impact the overall outcome of your sale.

It was exciting to form the new-look Hinternoosa at the start of April with the two leading hinterland agencies, Wythes and Hinternoosa, coming together as the new Hinternoosa super team. Already, our sellers are seeing the benefits of

11 agents actively working to sell their property.

In addition, our clients’ needs are being met by a property management department of five and an exceptional administration team, all backed by strong leadership.

A selection of recent results achieved by our new-look super team include: 92 Hoy Rd, Lake Macdonald sold immediately post auction by Alisa Wythes for $1,900,000; 79 Pearsons Rd, Cooroy sold at auction by Jeanette Catalano (price withheld); 173 Nandroya Rd, Cooroy sold for

$1,050,000 pre-market by Kess Prior and Dannielle Preston; 41/19 Trading Post Rd, Cooroy sold in 26 days by Alisa Wythes and Sheridan Hodgetts (price withheld); 3 Grey Gum Ct, Cooroy sold for $980,000 in 34 days by Warren Berry; and 884 EumundiNoosa Rd, Doonan sold for $1,075,000 post-auction by Caroline Johnston and Alisa Wythes.

For the same great results or if you have any questions on the market and your own situation, please reach out for a confidential chat: Hinternoosa Cooroy 5447 7000 or Doonan 5449 1186.
