Mother’s Day fun at Cooroy Fusion Festival Capture a priceless gift for mum at the Wythes Real Estate photo booth at this year’s Cooroy Fusion Festival. Held Saturday 11 May, the day before Mother ’s Day the photobooth is one of the Festival’s most popular free activities. Festival Chair Jim Ennis encouraged families to come and join in the fun and take the opportunity to bring mum along. “This year we’ve got Mum covered on several counts. There are fantastic local market stalls, great entertainment and of course Wythes’ retro photo booth and card making activity,” he said. “As with almost everything at Cooroy Fusion, the card making activity is free, as is the photo booth thanks to the support of our great sponsors” Sirah Robb from Wythes Real Estate said she is looking forward to seeing past, present and future clients visiting the festival and encouraged everyone to drop in to the photo booth. “The photo booth will be at the Butter Factory Arts Centre. Get your photo taken and use the photo strip to make a unique Mother’s Day card. I just loved the strip photos and card my son made me at Fusion last year,” she said. Cooroy Fusion Festival is a whole of town event including Apex Park activities such as market, community and food stalls; the Bendigo Bank Entertainment marquee; Cooroy Rag Skate Aid demonstrations; BMX demonstrations; the Cooroy Supa IGA Tastes of the Hinterland marquee with food samples; Noosa Art’s

are a range of programs and entertainment including Makerspace activities, Lego lounge, and Old MacDonald’s Animal Farm sponsored by Cooroy Country Menswear & Jeanery. The Butter Factory Arts Centre will also have arty activities including the Clay Shed Australian Pottery Throw Down, hand building for children and adults market stalls and the Larrikin Puppet Show in the outdoor amphitheatre space. The Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show is at the CWA Hall; the Lifeline Denim Sale is at the Cooroy Memorial Hall; and woodworking displays at the Cooroora Woodworkers and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group in Lower Mill Road.

Taste fresh local fare at Fusion Supplying fresh and local food to the local community is Cooroy Supa IGA’s specialty – and this year they will once again showcase their produce at the Cooroy Fusion Festival. The Supa IGA “Tastes of the Hinterland” marquee will bring local food producers together to present some of their delectable produce. This year, products include tastings from Noosa Meat Centre, Roza’s Dips and Spreads, Diego’s Wraps and Kenilworth Cheeses. Cooroy Fusion Festival Chair, Jim Ennis, said the festival was pleased to once again have IGA on board as a platinum sponsor. “Super IGA is one of Cooroy’s larger employers, allowing many of our youth to have their first job, and are a key link between local producers and the community,” Jim said. “Cooroy Fusion is all about the best that Cooroy and the Noosa hinterland has to offer and a marquee that showcases local food producers is a perfect way to do that.” Romeo Bordignon, Group Manager of Cooroy Supa IGA & Pomona IGA said the marquee will allow people to taste test a variety of foods that are produced locally and see just what a wonderful food bowl we have here on the Sunshine Coast. “Cooroy Supa IGA have a strong history of supporting community, including local events like Cooroy Fusion and local products and producers and we look forward to once again bringing this marquee to the Festival - there

Romeo from IGA and Jim from Fusion may even be a few surprise products too,” Romeo said. This is just one of the great activities at Cooroy Fusion Festival which includes a huge program of entertainment and fun throughout town at Apex Park, Cooroy Library, The Butter Factory Arts Centre, the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show at the CWA Hall; the Lifeline Denim Sale is at Cooroy Memorial Hall; and woodworking displays at the Cooroora Woodworkers and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group in Lower Mill Road.

Go Noosa transport trials are back for Easter The success of the Go Noosa transport initiatives over Christmas will see the trials continue during this Easter holiday period. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the trials will begin at the start of the Queensland school holidays on 6 April and run for three weeks. “With Easter Monday on 22 April and Anzac Day on Thursday 25 April, we expect people will extend their holidays so we’d like the free buses and other initiatives to be available over three weeks.” “Almost 204,000 locals and visitors used the free buses over the Christmas holidays, saving approximately 100,000 car trips. This greatly reduced traffic and emissions.” A free Go Noosa App will provide information on bus timetables, scooter and bike parking, bike paths, walking tracks plus carparking and traffic levels in the Hastings St precinct. The Noosa Heads Lions Park will again be available for additional parking. Traffic controllers will also help prioritise buses and pedestrians in Noosa Heads. Digital road-side information boards will again provide real-time traffic and parking information

on major road entry points. Data from last Christmas revealed 40% of survey respondents used these road-side information boards to inform their travel choices. Car parking limits at Noosa Junction will be extended from 3 hours to 6 hours to support the Park and Ride service from this precinct. “The positive response to the Christmas trials created the momentum to use Easter to collect even more data. We will use the information to decide what works well and what can be improved,” Cr Wilkie said. Go Noosa is a collaboration between Council, Translink, and Sunbus. It is supported by Zero Emissions Noosa, the Hastings Street Association, Noosa Junction Traders Association, Tourism Noosa, Noosa Residents and Ratepayers Association and other stakeholders. “All of the initiatives support Council’s Transport Strategy priorities. These include the use of new technology, park-and-ride services, plus better parking management as well as support for sustainable transport modes including bicycles.” For more information on the trials visit noosa.qld.gov.au/go-noosa.

How to start saving Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank A few weeks ago, I talked about some of the reasons why you should save, so this week I’ll share how to start saving in five easy steps. I think we all agree that the only sure-fire way to become rich is to save more than you earn. Setting aside money each pay cycle is a habit that once formed can be quite easy to maintain, and will form the foundations of your financial future. Many people find it difficult to commit to a savings plan, and without putting strategies in place it’s easy to end up with no money left by the end of the pay week. The ATO knows this, so they ensure that they get paid first - before you even see the money. Similarly, gyms and other companies put systems in place to take money from your account instead of waiting for you to pay them. One of the first lessons is “you wont miss what you don’t have.” 1. Decide – decide what you are saving for, and prioritise. You may have a number of savings goals, in which case it may be helpful to have a number of different accounts, but you need to decide which is most important for you right now. You will also need to decide how much you can afford to save each week, fortnight or month. 2. Set a timeline – Once you have decided on what you need and when, break the plan down into smaller, more manageable steps. Let’s say you decide to take the family to Bali for a week and you think you will need $3,000. Determine how much time you have to save before the holiday. In simple terms, if you save $150 a fortnight, you will be able to afford the trip in 10 months. If your plan is bigger, such as a home deposit, or retirement planning, keep breaking down the steps and set benchmarks at regular intervals to keep yourself on track. 3. Maximise your savings – Shop around for an account which pays a good rate of interest.

Another trick is to make the funds less accessible. Many banks have certain accounts into which you can regularly deposit. However, there are restrictions on when you can access the funds. For example, Christmas Club accounts only permit withdrawals over the festive season and are a great option to plan ahead. 4. Make it automatic – By setting up an automatic transfer, either through your employer or directly with the bank, you will ensure that you maintain your savings every time you are paid. The simplest way of doing this is via your internet banking, establishing a transfer of your allocated amount, which will coincide with your regular payday. 5. Reduce your debts – It is no good trying to saving money if you have any debt such as credit cards or pay-day loans, as you will often find that any interest you earn on your savings is eaten up by the interest you are paying on your borrowings. It’s very easy to get caught up in a debt circle and it can often feel overwhelming trying to deal with the issue. However, there are some great tools available to help you manage your debts and to start planning for a better future. If you would like to discuss any information about savings or debt reduction, or any other banking needs home loan or insurance of any kind, please contact our team at Cooroy (5447 7131) or Pomona (5485 1786) on me on email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Business for Sale

‘What Price our Freedom?’

ANZAC merchandise will be on sale at the front of the Cooroy RSL on April 22, 23 and 24. Australia ‘the lucky country’ no doubt you’ve heard that quote many times and I must say that I agree completely. We are a country of some 25m. population, that’s approximately 0.33% of the total peoples of the world today and when you compare our facilities and our achievements with other places we rate pretty highly on world rankings I’m sure you have heard numbers bandied around of those killed and wounded in various conflicts in which Australia has been involved, so to put those numbers into

perspective I would like to quote figures from all conflicts of Australian involvement over a period since 1860 (The Anglo Maori conflict 1860/1861) right through to our current involvement in Afghanistan. (Figures have been taken from Australian War Memorial and have been rounded) Number Enlisted 1.9m Deaths 102900 Wounded 227300 POW 35000 Died in Captivity 8500. When you consider those personnel who returned and have needed ongoing care and also their

families you begin to realise the horrendous human cost of war. Our current Government has allocated $11.3 billion as part of the 2018/2019 ongoing budget through The Department of Veterans Affairs to cover costs for support of veterans and their families. These veterans have returned from areas of conflict, wounded in body and mind. They have put their lives on the line so that we all enjoy our present lifestyle free from terrorism events that are so prevalent in many coun-

tries today, so let’s look after them now Defence doesn’t come cheap. Australia currently spends just under 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence each year; $3.4 billion; or about $1500 for every Australian, man woman and child. The new Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 lightning II, will cost Australia about $123 million for each of 72 fighter aircraft, and the P8 Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft will cost $4billion for the first eight aircraft Ships are also expensive, with 12 new Arafura class offshore patrol vessels costing $3 billion and three Hobart Class air warfare destroyers another 9 billion

dollars For the Australian Army we are spending $1.3 billion to re-equip the army with over 2000 Hawkei light protection armoured cars and trailers, and 47 MRH90 troop lift Helicopters, that carry twenty soldiers each, cost us another 4 billion dollars We are able to allocate cost of military equipment, but what about the cost of just one human life, and it’s not that one life either, think about the impact on family, then multiply that many millions of times - I think you will agree YES WE ARE A LUCKY COUNTRY !! This ANZAC day as you see the veterans marching, shake one by the hand and say THANKS MATE. John Diprose, RSL Sub-branch

Noosa Library Services’ Makerspaces are bringing a new wave of confidence to members of Sunshine Butterflies. The council initiative, which offers the community a space to create using a range of digital tools and technologies, has become an integral part of the disability service provider’s ongoing program. Sunshine Butterflies’ Team Leader Bec Johnson said the Makerspace has provided a platform for its members to gain better problem solving skills and confidence within a public social setting. “We started off taking one member there, and we noticed it got his confidence up, and now we have 10 members going,” she said. “It’s amazing how much they have grown and how much they have learnt, like problem solving on their own; they don’t need as much guidance. It brings them confidence and it builds character,” she said. As well as sewing machines and photographic equipment, both Cooroy and Noosa Makerspaces host new emerging technologies such as 3D printers, virtual reality systems and robotic technologies. The space is available for the general public to access scheduled workshops, while members have access seven days a week across both locations. Ms Johnson said the space enables their members to interact with the community, broaden their social aspects and learn in a safe environment. It’s also been pinnacle in growing their self-esteem and confidence. “It really has given our members confidence and empowerment. For example a lot of people haven’t even used a 3D printer before, yet we’ve got members who are creating 3D products here and it’s really empowering for them. They are picking up important skills and if it wasn’t for the Makerspaces we wouldn’t have access to the hardware, 3d printers and computers. It’s an amazing initiative.” Libraries and Galleries Manager, Tracey King said they were thrilled the Makerspaces was being so well received by the community. “It is so rewarding to see the team from Sunshine Butterflies come in each week, along with other locals who love to use the space to create and explore. “We’ve been able to provide a valuable digital-learning space for our community and to see the smiles on their faces when they come in is just priceless.” Ms King said.

COOROY RAG

‘My bike is my home’ I’ll say this slowly so that it sinks in: In the past 6 years, Melissa Tong has ridden more than 84,000 km on her bicycle. That is approximately 14,000 km a year – about the same as a lot of us do in a car every year. Mel owned a car once, but she gave it up 4 years ago. Why spend more than $1,000 a year on reg and insurance when you’re not even using the car? As you’ve probably guessed, Mel goes literally everywhere on her bike. Having worked as a librarian for the Noosa Council for the past 16 years, Mel has been commuting to work on her bike for many years. She lived closer to her work before, but even when she moved further away, first to Peregian Beach and then to Pomona (where she lives now), she never stopped using her bike. That’s right, Pomona to Noosaville on a daily basis – and she is usually in Noosaville by 6am, ready for yoga!

‘Why?’ you may ask. Fitness? Saving money on fuel? These may be secondary factors, but it seems there is more to it than that. “I feel very free when I’m riding,’ Mel explains. “My body falls into a rhythm and this allows me to not get stuck in my head.” Mel says that after riding to work she finds it easy to focus on what has to be done. If she has travelled by car, she feels less ‘switched on’. She also says that riding gives her a sense of achievement and, even on days that don’t go well, she knows ‘the ride will be good!’ Mel is now Branch Coordinator for Noosa Libraries which means moving between Noosaville Library, Cooroy Library and the offices at Tewantin chambers, all of which she does (of course!) on her bike. She feels really lucky that Noosa Council have been so supportive and flexible.

People with Purpose in Our Community fell ill. They had already ridden 15,359 km and had only 1,700 km to go. Mel says it was an amazing trip. “You notice so much more on a bike than you do in a car”, she says. It’s the simplicity of riding that Mel loves best. She even keeps her bike simple, with no

fancy gadgets, so that she can fix everything herself. Simplicity and freedom - so important in our world today. No wonder she gives her bike so much credit for bringing balance to her life. “My bike is my home,” she says. Simple.

Melissa Tong and the bike that’s carried her 84,000 km in 6 years

“If it takes me a bit longer to get between branches then I’ll just work a bit late,” she says, adding that a great advantage is never having to worry about parking. Mel’s bike has even led to romance. She met her partner, Darran, on the road 6 years ago. They had actually been riding past

each other for years, then one day Mel had pulled over and Darran stopped to check if all was okay. “A few years later, the poor man was riding around Australia with me!” says Mel with a smile. And she really means ‘around Australia’! In 2016, Mel took 8 months off work to ful-

fil a long-held dream to ride around Australia and Darran was with her all the way. Carrying all their own gear, they rode up to Cooktown, across to Darwin, over to Western Australia, all the way back across the Nullarbor, until, unfortunately, they had to cut their journey short in Victoria when Mel’s dad

Cooroy RSL offers up a special treat for Easter on Thursday 18th April, with Cooroy’s home grown super star talent, Jamison Kehl taking to the stage. After suddenly popping into the industry at the age of 15, the 18 year old songstress has been creating quite a stir around the Sunshine Coast. In 2017, after being named one of only ten young women from Queensland to participate in the mentoring program Big Sky Girls, Jamison released her debut single “Limerence” which was recognised as Highly Commended in the 2018 Queensland Music Awards. Whilst completing her final year of school, Jamison performed at an abundance of local

events, such as the Australian Body Art Festival and Cooroy Fusion Festival; and was vocally trained under scholarship with platinum recording artist Suzanne Kompass for Noosa District State High School’s production of Mary Poppins. This year, being Jamison’s first year out of high school, she is studying music at the University of the Sunshine Coast as a High Performance Student Musician and is preparing to release more music later in the year. Jamison’s earthy vocals and original sound are mesmerising and always a firm favourite with the audience. You can catch her at Cooroy RSL on Friday 18th April from 6pm. Book a table for dinner and make a night of it!

Bekki Woodcock, owner of Cooroy’s newest store, Galah Home, grew up in England before moving to Australia over 15 years ago when she met her Australian husband. She has called the Sunshine Coast home for the last 13 years. “I’ve always had a passion for beautiful things. I think it ran down the generations in my family, it’s something we did a lot in our family - buying beautiful and thoughtful gifts - and the house being made a home was always a priority,” says Bekki. “I believe our environment has a big impact on our wellbeing. I love to encourage and inspire people to make their home more than just four walls, especially using pieces to make it a space that reflects your personality. “After working in Noosa for the past few years and honing my skills in this area it felt like the right time to realise my own vision and open a store. Having lived in Cooroy with my family for the past couple of years, enjoying the cafes and restaurants and watching it grow into a great little destination, it felt like it could be the right time to complement the existing shops that are in town.

“It’s been great to create a space for shoppers to buy something beautiful for themselves or to make someone smile, to browse in a relaxing environment and gather some inspiration. It gives me great pleasure to watch people walk out of the store with something to invigorate their home. “All areas of the store have received a great response, from homewares, to some locally designed and made fashion, gifts and the kids’ section. It seems the little vision in my head for a soft coastal country store has come to life perfectly. People have commented that the store is relaxing, and envelopes you as soon as you walk through the door. It smells good too, that’s down to the perfectly crafted Australian made candles and diffusers from Hutwoods. “Since we opened the doors, the Cooroy community has been so welcoming. I have been so lucky to meet some beautiful people and there are already a few homes in Cooroy and the surrounds adorned with artwork, cushions and lamps, and it also seems there have been smiling faces upon opening a gift wrapped package or two from the store. There are treats in store for everyone, no matter how big or small. “I look forward to welcoming you if only for a minute or two, or for a little while longer. If you require help with styling tips for your home, then I’d love to help you with that too.” Galah Home in Emerald Street, Cooroy, is open Mon-Fri 9-5 Sat 9-1 – Sun-Closed.

road locations where crashes are occurring through safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts, we are helping make our local roads safer for all road users,” Mr O’Brien said. Mr O’Brien said Noosa Shire Council would receive an additional $790,346 for a five-year total of $3,951,729. The Coalition Government will deliver a further $571.1 million to improve the safety and efficiency of heavy vehicle operations through the Bridges Renewal Program, Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiatives (HVSI). “This includes Mary River Road Bridge at Cooroy and the Old Noosa Road Bridge at Cooran which have both been replaced at a combined cost of $3.08 million, joint-funded by the Liberal and Nationals Government through the Bridges Renewal Program and Noosa Council,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We have also made a $5 million commitment to reconstruct the Coondoo Creek Bridge, and $372,500 to widen and strengthen a 350 metre section of Wadell Road.” Mr O’Brien said the Budget also delivers safer roads through a variety of further initiatives, including establishing a new Office of Road Safety to facilitate a greater leadership role for the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government. “Safer roads and bridges mean safer heavy vehicle operations, which is critical to our goal of reducing road trauma on the nation’s roads,” he said. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said 2018 saw 81 fewer deaths nationwide compared to 2017, but there is no room for complacency. “We must push ahead with practical measures and infrastructure funding to drive road deaths towards zero,” Mr McCormack said.

“The Government has also announced a new $12 million Road Safety Innovation Fund to support research and development in priority areas such as regional road safety, driver distraction from mobile devices, protecting vulnerable road users and reducing drug driving. “In addition, a new Road Safety Awareness and Enablers Fund will offer $4 million in targeted and competitive grants to fund road safety awareness, education and collaboration initiatives. “We are also backing local governments to prioritise safety, providing a further $2.55 million to the Australian Road Research Board to help councils keep abreast of the latest road safety design and maintenance innovations when managing their local road assets. “This is in addition to renewed commitments to fostering the skills of new drivers through the Keys2drive program, continued funding to the Aus-

tralasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) to encourage the purchase of safer vehicles, and an ongoing commitment to safer vehicle design through rigorous and globally harmonised Australian Design Rules. “The Government will also place road safety at the heart of its infrastructure investment program by prioritising safe system principles in line with the National Road Safety Strategy.” The Government is committed to working in a bipartisan spirit to progress the 12 recommendations made by the National Road Safety Strategy Inquiry in September 2018. The additional funding builds on the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government’s current investment of around $2.6 billion in safety-enhancing projects, bringing the total investment to $3.1 billion per year over the period 2019–20 to 2022– 23.

The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government will help keep drivers safe on local roads by delivering an additional $2.2 billion in road safety funding. Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien, a former road crash investigator with Queensland Police, said road safety is everyone’s responsibility but the Government has a key role to play in delivering safer roads. “As a former police officer, I’m passionate about reducing road trauma and these commitments to improving road safety are very welcome,” Mr O’Brien said. The Morrison Government has announced an additional $1.1 billion in funding for local governments under the Roads to Recovery program, as well as an extra $550 million for the successful Black Spot Program, which targets known high-risk locations and reduces serious crashes by 30 per cent on average. “By fixing and upgrading

Den. bigibbum better known as the Cooktown Orchid and is the Queensland Floral emblem. I find it an easy orchid to cultivate as long as you adhere to a couple of simple rules. The plants require a wet, humid summer so I water every couple of days during spring and summer followed by a dry winter, as the plants are dormant. During winter I do not water at all. I have an orchid friend in Townsville who has been growing for over 50 years and believes they should never be over potted; he never pots in anything more than a 100mm pot. The Den. bigibbum tends to develop rot and eventually dies when trying to grow them into specimen plants. There have been many hybrids made with Den. bigibbum and quite a few of these will be on show at Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society Show is been held in Cooroy on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th May.

The Show is open Friday at 8.30AM and is an added attraction to Cooroy Fusion on Saturday. Come and enjoy all the activities in Cooroy. This is the club’s Mothers Day show and there will be many varieties of orchids to admire and purchase. We also have a beautiful Raffle. The club charges a $3 entry fee to cover expenses. The Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society meets at the Tinbeerwah hall the second Saturday of each month. I prefer people to arrive for the meetings at 1pm for a 1.30 pm. Start. All interested orchid enthusiasts are welcome to visit. The club is made up of all levels of orchid growers from established growers to novice growers all prepared to share their knowledge. Sandy Klein - April 28, 1954 - March 28, 2019 It is with much sadness we advise that Sandy Klein passed away on March 28, 2019 after battling Motor Neuron Disease. Sandy was born in Burleigh Heads to parents Les and Beryl Klein. With the beach as their backyard, Sandy said most of her childhood memories are of her and her 7 siblings (including identical twin sister Marlene) swimming, playing on the beach, climbing on the rocks and watching sunsets. Her father, a Hungarian, was in Belsen Camp in the War but Sandy said they were brought up as Aussies. She was President of the Monkees’ Fan Club and remembers ditching school to run and meet them when they were playing at Miami Chair Lift. As a junior reporter for Go Set magazine, the first Australian weekly newspaper which focused on Australian teenage popular music, culture and fashion she got to meet them several times, along with the Easybeats and many other popular musos of the times. Writing was a big part of her life. Although always a lover of the English language and an avid reader and writer, Sandy says she didn’t really like school and left Miami High to work in fashion, a job she loved and excelled in, when she was 16. Her boss, Mrs Charlesworth, was a Jewish icon and taught her everything about fashion. While still just a teenager she was being sent on buyer’s trips, flying to Melbourne and dealing with the sellers. She remembers talking a seller into taking them to the Painted Lobster at Miami for dinner. She had a whole lobster mornay and drank Drambuie. She was 16 and the legal drinking age was 21. When Sandy was 20 she moved to Brisbane, still working in the fashion industry. She said this was the fun fashion era of hot pants, boots and miniskirts with jukeboxes blasting out music as they danced around the store. Her 20s was a very social time, going to dances at Cloudland and fetes with her and Marlene having fun confusing people as they were identical. Writing, music and fashion were a huge party of Sandy’s life. But a big change came when she was 19 and discovered meditation. Her teacher and spiritual guide was

Prem Rawat and they always remained friends. At 20 she did her Yoga training with Swami Sarawasti and travelled to India for 3 months. She wold save her money and travel – to America, England, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, to see her teacher and have a holiday. Many of the friends she made during her travels are still friends today. She said the best thing about being a yoga teacher was inspiring her students to be better people. Giving tips on life and nutrition, guiding them through meditation. She said it made her feel focused and aware. I was helping me firstly. Sandy was still holding classes from her wheelchair in December 2017. Ten years ago Sandy started acting with the Independent Comedy Theatre run by John and Carol Burls and loved acted in Pantomimes including Robin Hood, the Reluctant Dragon, Peter Pan and musicals including My Fair Lady and adult comedy. She also sang in the Sunshine Coast Choral Society for over 10 years. Another interest of Sandy’s was making mandalas. She went to one 3-hour workshop and then started creating her own designs. But Sandy’s overriding achievement was motherhood. She loved being a mum to her two children, Sarah and Leon. Taking them to dancing, swimming, football, pony club and watching them grow into ‘amazing’ adults. Sandy met Kenny Gamble 20 years ago. A man she described as her soul mate and true love connection. She leaves this message to Kenny and her children, family and friends … “Life is beautiful. The sun will rise and set. Be in this moment called now. I’ll always be around, in the breeze somewhere. Miss me but let me go. Remember your own personal things that we shared together. That’s where I will be.” Sandy’s funeral service will be held at Gregson and Weight in Noosaville on April 12 at 11am. All are welcome to attend.

I wanna be a cowboy !

The team at Cooroy Country Menswear - Jo, Kerry and Karina There is something super sexy about cowboys and cowgirls. The boots, the crisp collared shirt, the hats and the hip hugging jeans as they strut past you makes you want one, or want to become one. Either way the girls at Cooroy Country Menswear have you covered. You may bump into one of them while they’re getting their gear for the upcoming Gympie Muster, or if you’re thinking a little country is exactly what your wardrobe needs then this Maple Street shop caters for men, women and children and is brimming with the new season’s fashion. Along with their staple brands of Thomas Cook, an Australian brand synonymous with the Australian Outback, and Wrangler, an iconic label whose focus of ‘it’s all about the jeans’ unchanged since it was started in 1947, Cooroy Menswear & Jeanery has introduced Ringers Western. From humble beginnings on a cattle station in the Kimberley region in 2012 Ringers Western was formed. Sitting around a campfire one night after a hard day’s work in the yards, the crew (now known as the Ringers Western crew) got chatting about the lack of quality clothing needed in their line of work.

Like a Ringer they decided the brand had to be tough, adaptable, sometimes cheeky but always offering you class and loyalty. “And this is exactly what the brand offers in the men’s and women’s range, and is a perfect fit for our store” says Kerry, Manager of Cooroy Country Menswear. It’s only been 7 months since the store opened its doors to the cheeky signage of ‘for all you good looking Roosters!’ under their Rooster logo, and Kerry says they couldn’t be happier with the support they have received from their local community. “Cooroy has its roots in farming and even though this has changed over the years with its diverse, artistic, bustling, boutique shopping, coffee sipping vibe emerging, the essential honesty, friendliness and down to earth helpful core still underlies it all. “We are open Monday to Saturday with people from all over the area coming though our doors, from Gympie to Brisbane and beyond, because Country is a feel not a place. And you definitely get the authentic country, friendly service from all the team whether you come to buy or browse.”

Four surprising causes of neck pain If you are experiencing regular neck pain that just won’t go away, it’s possible that parts of your daily routine are contributing without you realising. Here are a few common everyday activities that might be making your neck pain worse. 1. Your sleeping position It’s easy to underestimate the impact your sleeping position has however, spending hours in one position will undoubtedly have an effect on your body. Pillows that are too high or too flat can mean your cervical joints are sitting at the end of their range in too much flexion or extension. Similarly, sleeping on your stomach often means your thoracic spine is locked into extension and your neck is fully rotated. In simpler terms, this means your joints are under more stress than necessary. Ideal sleeping posture allows your spine to maintain it’s natural curves.

2. Your daily commute Many of us make sure our work stations are ergonomically set up to reduce stress and strain throughout the day. Few of us take the same consideration when it comes to driving. In fact, the set up of your car can be just as important as your work-desk, particularly if you are driving more than 30 minutes everyday. The correct setup in your car can mean you use less effort to drive and turn your head less often to check traffic. Ensuring that your steering wheel, seat and mirrors are set up correctly could make a difference to your posture and even perhaps reduce neck pain and headaches. If you find that driving is still affecting your pain after making these changes, try catching public transport or riding a bike on alternative days. 3. Your downtime Many of us unwind by watching TV or our laptops at the end of the day. Your position during this time can be something you give little thought to however, looking up to view a screen mounted on a wall or looking down at a small screen or laptop can put pressure on the upper structures of the neck. Take a few minutes to consider what posture you’re sitting in before settling down to binge watch a series and see if you can either lower the height of your screen or raise it slightly so your neck can be in a more neutral position. 4. Your exercise routine Any activity that requires sustained positions or repetitive neck movements can contribute to neck pain. Cyclists can be stuck in neck extension while looking ahead and breast stroke swimmers can also have excess neck extension. Freestyle swimmers with reduced thoracic or neck rotation can have difficulty achieving rotation when breathing which can cause pain and discomfort over time. Your physiotherapist is able to identify any daily habits or activities that might be contributing to your neck pain. Come and see us for an appointment to see how we can help. Supercharge your health this Autumn Our modern lifestyles often prevent us from tuning in to the cycles of nature and their direct effects on our health. At different times of day and during different seasons our bodies are cycling through phases of peak to low digestion, energy, absorption, elimination, rest, repair, mental clarity, creativity... The list goes on. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, during Autumn our lungs and large intestines are dominant. These are the major organs of elimination and so Autumn is the most natural time for detoxifying the old ‘debris’ and ‘spent’ energy of summer and for entering into a period of withdrawal, restoration and nourishment in winter, to prepare for the next cycle of growth and expansion in spring. Just as a plant sends energy to its roots to build a strong foundation through Autumn, we too are eliminating toxins, recycling waste materials and building up our foundation energy during the cooler months. Autumn is the best time for detoxifying body and mind, discarding old habits and outlived beliefs, toxic relation-

ships and more. Have a look at what no longer works and do some lifestyle pruning! Maple St Acupuncture has a range of therapies and herbal tonics to take advantage of this season of elimination and to support your body to cleanse, build and repair so that you can meet winter with increased vitality, optimal digestion, improved circulation and the inner ‘fire’ to support you through the cold months. Remedial and ZenThai Massage and Myofascial Cupping therapies help to eliminate toxins, particularly by improving circulation of blood and lymph. Acupuncture works deeply into the organs to release stagnation, optimise functioning and increase the flow of chi (prana, life force) throughout the body. Osteopathy works to restore structural alignment so that energy, blood, breath and lymph can flow freely and support optimal health. Influenza seasons and severity are unpredictable. The Department of Health advises that vaccination is the most important measure we have to prevent influenza and its complications. Those eligible for a free flu shot under the National Immunisation Program include people 65 years and over, pregnant women, those who suffer chronic conditions as well as, for the first time, all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People from 6 months of age. Closing this gap means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children

and adolescents aged 5-14 years of age will now be able to access the flu vaccine at no cost. Annual vaccination is recommended for anyone six months of age and older, with those not eligible under the program able to purchase the vaccine on the private market. The more people who are vaccinated, the less likely that the flu will spread in the community. Influenza is a major cause of illness in the Australian community, and in some cases can result in death.

Do you experience facial pain? Do you experience facial pain? You are not alone. The Sunshine Coast Trigeminal Neuralgia Support group may be able to help you. Stunning Home in the Hinterland

Building & Pest Inspections your inspection reports are not satisfactory to you but you must act reasonably in doing so. Many potential purchasers don’t realise this and this is where difficulties can arise. A seller can challenge your right to terminate the contract on grounds of reasonableness particularly if the defects included in the reports are few and minor or potentially were clearly identifiable before making the offer (and therefore taken into account with the agreed price). Whether or not it is reasonable to terminate the contract will depend on a variety of factors, such as the age of the property and if the issue was obvious when the contract price was negotiated. Major structural issues or active termite infestation are examples where it would be reasonable to terminate. Many people also don’t realise that a report from a building and pest inspector’s usually doesn’t cover whether all structures on the property have received the necessary building approvals from Council and additional searches will need to be done separately to ensure these approvals have been obtained. It’s important to discuss these issues with your solicitor and have them look over your contract before signing anything. For more information phone SPM Law 5440 4800.

A building and pest inspection should be considered an essential part of the home buying process and in Queensland it is standard for contracts of sale to include a building and pest condition. To gain protection under the contract the inspection must be conducted by an appropriately licensed inspector. Building & Pest inspections are designed to determine the condition of the house before committing to completion of the purchase. They assist with identifying any major issues (big or small) that will need to be remedied. Common building defects that are identified during inspections include rising damp, leaks or draining issues, cracked wall, leaking roofs and safety hazards. It is very important to remember that building and pest inspections are visual inspections, which mean inspectors cannot cause any damage to the property or even move items of furniture during inspections. If there are areas to which they cannot gain access, these will also not be inspected. However, it is critical to note that these clauses do not automatically give you a right to terminate or renegotiate the price. You can only terminate a contract if

Buyer beware! Imagine finding your dream home only to discover there’s some serious issues with the property. It might be problems with the roof, water-proofing concerns in the bathroom or some dodgy paving that could prove a serious hazard. This is why enlisting the services of an honest, reliable building and pest inspector is so important before you purchase a house. Ben Eggleton of Jim’s Building Inspections Cooroy, is a fully insured and licensed building inspector, pool inspector, asbestos assessor and new construction inspector, and says that with the onus on the buyer to beware, a building inspection is a small investment for peace of mind. “A building inspector should highlight any minor and major defects – the sorts of things you probably won’t pick up yourself at an open inspection. You’ll then be able to determine whether you’re prepared to fork out the money required to fix these problems, if you can negotiate a lower price or if you should walk away altogether,” said Ben. Jim’s Building Inspections offers obligation free quotes for all building inspections for buyers as well as vendors looking to put their house on the market, new construction, renovators and rental inspections. “My inspection report includes photos and easy to read descriptions of each defect and the report is completed with 24 hours of the inspection.” Ben is member of Master Builders Association Qld and has been a builder for 25 years managing his own residential renovation company for 20 years on Sydney’s Northern Beaches before moving to the Sunshine Coast. “I live in Doonan and am here for the long

Full steam ahead for Tourism Teams as they head to Gympie!

Council backs regional plan for hard-to-accommodate sports

The new Regional Facilities Plan for Difficult to Locate Sports considers the needs of sports with special requirements, such as motorcycling sports.

Tourism team

Word is spreading far and wide that the Mary Valley Rattler is back on track as the iconic heritage rail experience celebrates welcoming thousands of passengers on board since commencement of operations in October 2018. Mary Valley Rattler General Manager David Thompson is proud of the volunteer teams who work tirelessly to deliver this heritage experience to the ever-growing number of guests coming on board. “The comments I am hearing as guests return to the Station after their journey is that they are loving the experience, the scenery and the connection with our local communities on the train and at the Stations.” “We work closely with our tourism industry partners, many having firsthand experience since operations began. “We have also welcomed many of the Visitor Information Volunteers on board from Destination Gympie Region, Visit Sunshine Coast, Tourism Noosa and Maleny Visitor Information Centre. Mr. Thompson said.” The Mary Valley Rattler recently had the Tourism Noosa team on the train for an ‘On Board’ meeting. “It was great to get the team together and experience the Mary Valley Rattler. The day we were on the train it was full. It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages having such a great day out.” Tourism Noosa CEO Steve McPharlin said. Simon Latchford, CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) has enjoyed the journey sev-

eral times, most recently with his family. “The return of the Mary Valley Rattler is once again one of the region’s peak attractions and has provided a massive boost for the region’s tourism industry and wider community. “The combination of the romance of steam trains and the beautiful countryside it passes through is an appealing experience for a broad cross section of visitors - including my own family. VSC has been pleased to spread the word about the Ratter with highlights including the coordination of live Sunrise weather crosses and media visits by outlets Australian Traveller Magazine and QWeekend Magazine. “The return has and will continue to be a great opportunity to increase the profile of the Mary Valley, which offers such a rich holiday experience with its tremendous range of adventure activities, heritage villages, high-quality food experiences and attractive accommodation.” We regularly bring media and tourism industry guests locally, nationally and internationally to enjoy the Mary Valley Rattler experience.” Mr. Latchford said. “We will continue to share the story of all that our region has to offer from a tourism perspective. One of the key events from international buyers is being held in Perth in April of this year and supported by VSC, we will be there alongside Destination Gympie Region inviting visitors from all international destinations to come and explore our region and our wonderful heritage and natural assets.” Mr. Thompson said.

Council has endorsed a new plan to ensure the region’s difficult-to-locate sports are better catered for. Noosa partnered with Sunshine Coast and Gympie Councils to develop the Regional Facilities Plan for Difficult to Locate Sports, with the Queensland Government providing financial assistance under the Sport and Recreation Planning Program. Each of the three councils also contributed funds. The Plan considers the needs of aviation sports, motorcycling sports, competitive powered water sports and shooting. “These sports have special requirements – such as the need for large land areas, or sites where the noise they generate won’t impact residents,” says Council’s Community Services Project Officer, Mark Borgert. “It makes sense to work with our neighbouring councils to support the delivery of these sports to avoid unnecessary doubling up of infrastructure across the three areas and to maximise the use of the facilities that are already available,” he said.

“The Plan includes recommendations to guide the planning and development of the four difficult to locate sports and it will assist in identifying short, medium and long term priorities.” Mr Borgert thanked the community for having a say during the recent consultation period to help form the new plan. Key themes that emerged from the consultation included participation rates being either static or increasing across the four sports. The local clubs are predominantly satisfied with the standard, provision and location of their current facilities and there are some local facilities which have the ability to expand to a regional level. “It is important to note the Plan focuses on public land and community-based clubs and sports and does not include private facilities,” he said. Noosa Council residents will be able to view the Plan on Council’s Your Say Noosa website – yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au

U6’s: A bit of rain didn’t stop the under 6s from another mighty performance. Against a well drilled Noosa opposition the Dragons defended well, with a standout performance from Henry, who showed great speed around the field. Incorporating some skilful passing and setting up tries, Arthur, CJ, Jax, Nixon, Nya and Owen all proved that the mighty U6 are a force to be reckoned with. U8’s: The Eumundi Dragons U8s learnt some valuable lessons on the weekend against the Noosa Dolphinsy. Though they were slightly out sized they held their own and consistently tackled, won the ball at the break down and scored an equal number of tries. The team is starting to gel together and are keen to get amongst it with some epic mauls, passing and support. Tries by Brooklyn Griggs, Jack Cooper, Billy Gunton, George

Hillhouse and Josh Kuczynski were the result of some great team effort. Most of the team backed up and ran on for the U9s for some more game time against Maleny. U10’s: It was a tough day at the office for the U10 Dragons against a strong Uni team. Right from the start it was a battle of attrition with gains made and lost by both sides. There were some good runs made by the dragons but there were a lot of turn overs. Both teams applied pressure in the first half and it was a hard contest. The second half saw Uni run away with the game, though the Dragons were valiant in defeat. Max Johnson-Thompson made some spectacular tackles throughout the game. The Dragons have some lessons to take away from the match, and will be stronger for the experience.

Cutters Corner The cutters started their title with a grand final replay at home against Beachmere. It was always going to be a difficult mission particularly with short numbers & a very wet track. A couple of handling errors allowed Beachmere to take a handy 10 nil lead into half time. With 2 players going down with injuries it left the Cutters with 13 for men. Despite fighting gallantly Beachmere scored two more tries after half time break to go 20 nil up & with light an issue the referees called an end to the game with 15 minutes to go. In a game that was played in the middle the forwards dug deep. Gus Sullivan took home the 3 votes with Gary Holder 2 & Luke Martin 1. The following week saw a total change in weather condition as the Cutter Army decending on Kilcoy for a game

against arch rivals Yandina. Again with limited numbers injuries became an issue. With no possession Yandina raced to a 20 nil half time lead. The 14 fit players vowed at half time to wrestle the advantage back. Quick tries to Jake Bullen & Joey Mbye saw the score go to 20-8 before Yandina crossed just before full time. Final score 24-8. Ricky Brown took home the man of the match with Luke Martin & Brock Mavin the minors. This year more than ever the club needs volunteers & players. The club is open every Friday night. It’s never too late to sign up if you feel the urge to play. Call Ash Davis on 0406000486 & he will answer your questions. Gymnasts win at South East Queensland Regional Championships Gymnasts from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club travelled to the Gold Coast to compete at the South East Queensland Gymnastics Senior Regional Championships. The event hosted almost 250 of the state’s best gymnasts at the Coomera stadium, which was the venue for the Commonwealth Games. Competition was strong with competitors in all divisions looking for a good result in preparation for this month’s State Championship Event. Cooroy Gymnastics had four gymnasts representing the club, with all athletes competing on all six apparatus. Flynn Mackeown had his first senior level competition at the event, competing strongly on all apparatus in the level 7 division. He came a very credible 6th place on floor and finished just outside the top ten in the all around. The club had a strong team in the level 8 division with three competitors who have experi-

enced some previous success at the senior level. The trio of Dean Chandler, Lyam Chandler and Finlay Jones had a strong competition with 8 podium finishes between them, including two out of three top placings in the all

around and a total of three regional championships. Results: Finlay Jones: 1st all around, 1st rings, 3rd high bar Dean Chandler: 3rd all around, 1st pommel, 3rd parallel bars Lyam Chandler: 3rd rings, 2nd vault

All four gymnasts are now focusing on Queensland Senior State Championships which are held in Brisbane between 11th to 14th April at the Chandler Centre. The boys’ coach Jeff said, “We are working on eliminating deduc-

tions and looking for better consistency in our routines. Our focus is on scoring better at State Championships.” The boys will be training six days per week focusing on strong clean routines with a goal of selection onto the Queensland Team.
