New Club cleans up in Cooroy

THE Interact Club of Cooroy began in February and currently has over 20 members.

Organised by Noosa District State High School, Interact is a Rotary sponsored service club for young men and women ages 12 – 18. The members participate in fun, meaningful service projects that benefit

the community, develop leadership skills and form new friendships.

Every year Interactors participate in projects that help their local community in addition to fundraising that goes towards helping international causes. They are mentored by the Rotary Club but are completely independent and develop their own goals and projects.

Not my fave

I DON’T like to admit it, but I’m not too savvy when it comes to politics.

I vote to avoid the fine. It’s not that I don’t care about what’s going on in the world, it’s just that, well … if I tell the complete truth, I’m lazy. I’ve never tried to understand our governing system with its house of representatives, back benchers, front benchers, shadow this and shadow that and as much as I like a good argument, I can’t even get excited when I see the goings on in Parliament on TV. So, as I did the walk of shame on my way to vote at our recent State elections, taking every pamphlet that was on offer at the gate, pretending that I just didn’t want anyone to know who I was voting for, I decided that this would be the year I educated myself. As I slunk from table to table shuffling through my pamphlets like a professional poker player, unsure of what electorate I was even in, I was wishing that I’d made this decision earlier - before I had my 18 year old daughter with me who was voting for the first time.

I could also bone up on my zoology while I’m at it as I’m unsure of what the animal is in the above pic. I think it’s an otter, but I’ll practise my political skills and tell you it’s a sloth (which is what I was going for because they’re lazy).

So there you have it ... shadows, shame and shuffling ...

Reading that many baby sloths die because they mistake their own arm for a tree branch - Not My Fave!

Off with the old – on with the new The tumult and shouting are over, the voters have had their say, A band new Government is with us, the old one out of the way.

It turned out to be practically a one-horse race, With Labor sinking dramatically, almost without trace.

The victory speeches are finished, the wounds dejectedly licked, And we have to come to terms, with the voters’ firm verdict.

Some fresh faces have appeared, many have departed unlamented, A new party has emerged surprisingly, previously unrepresented.

We are entering the Promised Land, our new rulers will declare, “The new Premier can fix everything, he used to be the Mayor!!”

Everyone was certain, a new Government would be elected, With countless polls appearing, it was not really unexpected.

THE Cooroy Area Residents Association are holding a Candidates night at the Cooroy Bowls Club Opal Street, Cooroy at 7 pm on the 23rd April 2012.

They have invited all Mayoral and Div 12 Council Candidates to the meeting. The Candidates will speak for 5 mins and when all candidates are finished speaking there will be question time.

They have invited all residents to come along and ask a question about a concern they may have in our area and also listen to the candidates view on the future for our area. Residents may have a view they would like to speak on.

They’d governed for so very long, they’d obviously got tired, And later performances, indeed, left much to be desired.

We’ve suffered high State borrowings, transport costs, and traffic jams, Soaring electricity and fuel bills, problems with the dams, Desalination plants in moth balls, Health Department woes, Sales of public assets, the list just grows and grows.

Nine tonnes of rubbished cleaned up!

FINE weather early and cool conditions throughout the morning helped just 400 local volunteers beat the rain and collect over 9 tonnes of rubbish spanning from 20 registration sites in the Noosa region on Clean Up Australia Day this year. This figure easily surpasses the previous best (or should that be worst ) figure of over 6 tonnes from 2010 and more than doubles the average of around 4 tonnes from previous years.

13 rubbish skips were filled to overflowing across the region, with Boreen Point and Pomona filling 2 skips each. It would be easy to suggest that this was the result of recent flooding, but I personally witnessed tyres, pallets and other household furniture items at these sites that suggested otherwise. Reports from site supervisors were of large increases in dump sites located in National Park, State Forest and Council bushland locations around Pomona, Boreen Point, Cooroy, Tewantin and Doonan. The vol-

ume of rubbish collected is staggering for the short time that volunteers spend on locating and collecting the discarded waste of many uncaring and unthinking people. The impact of State Government and Council tip fees increases along with the many other cost of living increases must be considered when reviewing this years haul.

One example of this year ’s Clean Up was Ringtail Ck Rd, linking Cooroibah to Cooroy, which was targeted after reports of illegal dumping following last years event. We were able to easily fill a large caged trailer with household furniture, a gas stove, countless tyres and even a safe that had been cut open (and of interest to local police) in just one trip along the road. Countless tracks lead into the adjoining State Forest from this road. How much more rubbish could be found along these tracks?

Another example was located in Tewantin National Forest, off Noosa Eumundi Rd just 1km from our local tip. Two

fridges, air conditioner, dryer, freezer, bed base and frame, 20 litre plastic drums and countless household items found dumped off a bush track here. A number of these items are made from recyclable metal and incur no fee at the tip at all, with the exception of fridges and freezers which need to be degassed.

The number of mattresses collected this year was staggering, with most skips containing at least one or two.

Fortunately, car bodies were almost non existent this year as rises in scrap metal prices now make it viable for towing companies to go in search of them an arrange removal.

The most disgusting find was at the Pomona truck stop, located on the Bruce Highway, where volunteers were confronted by the stench of urine and dodged human faeces.

But worse was yet to come when they removed 2 bags of urine filled plastic bottles that had been thrown over the 1.8 metre high fence and over the embankment. The 2 bins sup-

plied by Council at this stop are regularly filled to overflowing, with one split and in need of replacement. We are now targeting State and Local government departments to have some form of composting toilet constructed at the truck stop to prevent the potential health issues for Pomona residents, and additional bins.

Of course, many finds were found much closer to home in our parks, beaches, creeks, rivers and streets with over 440 bags of waste collected, around half of them full of recyclables.

Once again we collected countless recyclable bottles and cans, take away wrappers and drink containers, cigarette butts and plastic wrappers. Kayakers were also able to collect some staggering finds along the Noosa River including tyres, crab pots and even a metal bed frame.

(Yes, all collected on a

kayak!) Many thanks to all the Site Supervisors and Volunteers, Communities and Community Groups that gave up their time to make this year ’s massive effort possible. Also many thanks to the supporters of Clean Up Australia Day in the Noosa Region. A special mention to Cleanaway who made every effort to ensure that additional skips were provided and collected when needed.

All of our volunteers went into the draw for prizes generously donated by the Sheraton Noosa. After more than 21 years it still seems the message of Clean Up Australia Day is lost on a large number of people who continue to refuse to take responsibility for the waste they generate, and to Do the Right Thing when discarding that waste. So unfortunately, I hope we can count on your support again next year.

Completion of roadworks THE new external roadworks in front of NoosaCare’s Carramar site on the Noosa Cooroy Road, Tewantin, have reached completion. The line work, crossing island and right-hand turning lane are now in operation and will enable safe entry into the Carramar site.

This work is in preparation for the construction of a new dementia specific unit planned to commence in May 2012.

NoosaCare management would like to thank the community for being patient whilst this work was being carried out.

THE newly completed playground in Apex Park Cooroy. Stage 2 saw the addition of new playground equipment that added on to the small older section. Stage one of the playground upgrade was to build a new fence, re-arrange some older equipment, and to put a new soft surface around the park. Councillor Lew Brennan said “The playground is so popular that mums and dads and their kids are coming from as far and wide as Eumundi, Doonan and Pomona to meet in Cooroy and let the kids climb and play on the new equipment.”

The playground project has been funded from Lew’s Divisional funds and has been another example of the great work from council staff member Dallas Bickley who also recently oversaw the construction of the very successful Kin Kin Skate Park. “We’ve still got more work to do as we upgrade the rest of the park, but already we’re seeing that with this being right across the road from

the beautiful Cooroy library it has become a centre of fun and activity for all ages,” Cr Brennan said.

Back to the Hall FUNDRAISING has begun for the Back to the Hall restoration.

At 11.45am on Sunday March 25, I was at the fast check out of Cooroy’s IGA and I inadvertently left my wallet on the counter.

On my return shortly after, the wallet was gone along with all important cards and a large sum of money. The person who took it is on the store CCTV camera and the police have been advised. I do not wish you any harm or a similar occurrence to happen to you, as you would like honesty to prevail.

You know my name, it was on my driver’s license. Shame on you!

THIS year sees a new workshop at the upcoming Australian Body Art Carnivale (12 and 13 May in Eumundi) titled “All Dolled Up”, and organisers are seeking a crucial component … dolls!

The “All Dolled Up” workshops will encourage everyone to get hands-on and paint bodies (albeit small ones!) Dolls will serve as the “models” to be painted, decorated and enhanced, and adults as well as kids will be welcome to take part.

Workshop organisers Kait Manchip and Viv Eardley have been scouring opp shops and garage sales to collect a stockpile of dolls to decorate, but are in need of more dolls.

“Donations of preloved fashion dolls would be fantastic – dolls like Barbie and Ken, and Bratz sized dolls are ideal,” says Kait. “Even broken dolls, dolls with bad hair cuts and spare limbs can be used” “If there’s anyone out there having a clean up and wondering what to do with dolls no longer used,

we’d be thrilled to put them to good use.

Donations of anything sea themed or “bling” would be great too”.

The World of Banking Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

IN this column I want to explore the world of banking with you.

I also want to share how the modern banking industry works and what it contributes to our communities and indeed, our economy.

In my role as a manager of a Community Bank, I am seeing banking change and giving regional communities such as ours a real say in its own future.

Currently, the Australian banking sector is dominated by four major banks and the Australian government has a “four pillars” policy that prevents mergers between the four major banks. This is long-standing policy rather than formal regulation, but it reflects the broad political unpopularity of bank mergers.

A number of leading commentators have argued that the “four pillars” policy is built upon economic fallacies and works against the nation’s better interests. Recently, Australia’s “big four” banks are in fact in the world’s top 12 banks, due to recent collapses of large banking corporations.

Competitors to the ‘big four’ banks include smaller and often regional banks, as well as building societies and mutual credit unions.

I work for one of those, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, but on the same list are such banks as Suncorp, Bank of Queensland and ME Bank. The number of building societies in Australia sits at 10 and the number of credit unions is approximately 103, so the market choice is sizeable.

There are a number of foreign subsidiary banks, however only a few have a retail banking presence; HSBC Bank Australia,

Bank of Cyprus Australia Limited, Beirut Hellenic Bank and Citibank Australia have a small number of branches.

Did you know that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recorded that over the 12 months ending December 2011, the finance and insurance industry contributed $129.8 billion to Australia’s $1.2 trillion economy?

In comparison, manufacturing contributed $109.1 billion, construction $105.0 billion and mining $98.0 billion. It was also recorded that this industry sector has been the largest contributor to the Australian economy since 2006.

Banking and the various sectors that fall under banking such as building societies, credit unions, money market dealers, life insurance, superannuation funds, health and general insurance, truly is a major part of our Australian economy.

So get to know more about your bank and its role in our community. You may even be interested in becoming part of the banking industry and exploring possible employment opportunities. I’ll write more about this in my next article.

stage of much needed work at Marara Street.

great to be working with our old friends Phil Moran and his team to get this project one step closer to opening.

Landcare have been great partners now for 15 years or more and have again delivered a beautiful planting that will also act as a buffer to Mary River Road.� Councillor Brennan should know all about the partnership as he was on the Landcare committee for seven of their early years and is a strong supporter of the organisation. “It’s not only Landcare’s environmental contribution that is important to us but also their commitment to training young people and the unemployed in environmental management. That makes a huge contribution to our community’s well-being too�, said Cr Brennan. “The new Marara

Four years of significant achievements MAYOR Bob Abbot has strongly supported a report at council today which outlined the significant achievements of the organisation in its first term. “I echo the sentiments of the report and the snapshot of the major accomplishments it includes; solid foundations have been laid for the future of this region,� Cr Abbot said. “There have been many challenges; less than 12 months into the first term we were hit by the Global Financial Crisis. “It’s important to view council’s achievements through that prism, as the effects of that economic crisis are still with us – and are likely to remain far into the next council’s term. “We invested heavily in the region’s economy when it mattered, particularly through our capital works program, with a spend of more than $100 million annually. “This council delivered business programs to help those already here and to attract new ones to the region, under the Delivering a Natural Advantage to Business program. “A lot of hard work was put into making the processing of development applications more efficient and just as effective – last year more than 97% were approved. “While council dealt with the day to day delivery of quality services it also built a solid base for future generations, with a suite of strategies to de-

liver a sustainable future. “This was about strengthening the regional economy, protecting the environment, and preserving our unique communities. “Council’s most recent financial position was described in Queensland Treasury language as ‘strong with a neutral outlook’ – which is the highest possible rating in Queensland. “In June of 2010, the Australian Conservation Foundation ranked us the second-most sustainable region in the nation – that is, the most liveable in 21st century terms. “This council continues to support and work with educational establishments to develop the skills of this region to meet future demands.� “We’ve also worked hard to tackle the immediate problems posed by emergencies. Our disaster management team has met every challenge with professionalism and proficiency. “The report to council lists some of our achievements, but it is by no means exhaustive, and I’d encourage you to go to Council’s website to view all our strategies and plans. “I would like to thank all councillors for their work in their divisions, and also acknowledge their efforts in their portfolios. Their hard work has been central to this council’s success. “I hope that this region continues to strive to remain vibrant, green and diverse.�

Street car park will take pressure off Cooroy particularly as there are currently car park spaces lost to the reconstruction work in Maple Street after the devastating tornado ripped through the town. In keeping with the environmental nature of the Mill Site area, the car park will be kept very natural with grass rather than pavement.� “The car park will also be spacious enough to fit RVs, buses and caravans allowing people to park in town to do shopping and visit the many attractions Cooroy has to offer.

This is something that the town has been needing for quite some time and it is great that we’ve found a solution. With only a few minor works now to be completed the carpark should be open in the next couple of weeks.�

And while we would rather plan our next holiday than consider what’s going to happen when we die, it is one inevitable event that we should all plan for.

When someone dies, it’s a very difficult time for all the family. A Will provides some assurances as to how our money will be distributed. But what about superannuation?

For many people, their superannuation investment represents one of the largest portions of their assets. Therefore, it makes sense to ensure it is appropriately allocated to loved ones, without causing delays and confusion. Here’s what you can do: Update your details It’s wise to spend some time deciding who you want your superannuation benefits to go to when you die, and then ensuring those wishes are properly reflected in your fund arrangements.

Secondly, make sure that you update any details with your super fund if your circumstances change. Marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or the death of a beneficiary are all life events that may cause you to want to update your details.

Beneficiaries Super fund trustees usually pay death benefits to one or more of your dependants or to your estate.

Dependants include a spouse (including de facto partners), your children and/or your spouse’s children, and anyone who was financially dependent on you.

They also include anyone with whom you had an interdependency relationship. This covers people who (related or not) live together and provide each other with financial or domestic support or personal care.

The money can also be paid to your legal representative or executor of your estate.

If you choose not to nominate any beneficiaries, your super fund’s trustees will typically use their discretion to allocate the benefit. In many cases this is straightforward.

However, those involving ex-spouses or competing claims by family members can sometimes become drawn out.

Binding or non-binding nominations Most super funds allow you to choose from binding or non-binding nominations of dependants which you can change at any time.

A non-binding or “preferred beneficiary” nomination acts as a guide for the trustees.

In many cases your nominated beneficiaries will receive your benefit but the trustees have the final say. This can be the case if, for example, you nominate someone who does not meet the definition of a dependant.

Non-binding nominations do not expire so it is wise to review them regularly.

A binding nomination is a written direction to fund trustees and gives them no discretionary power, providing your nomination is valid.

This nomination requires more careful management; it must be made in writing, signed in the presence of two witnesses who are not beneficiaries, and generally be renewed every three years.

Regular reviews A regular review is critical to ensure your beneficiary nomination keeps up with the changes in your life.

In some cases a binding nomination might be invalid if one of the nominated beneficiaries no longer meets the legal definition of a dependant.

HELLO my name is Linda Morrell, and I live in Division 9 Sunshine Coast Regional Council, I am standing as an independent candidate for Division 9. I hope to have your support. I have lived for 8 years on Mount Ninderry. In this electorate I have been involved on many levels of business and community, both professionally and voluntarily.

I am aware of the many needs of local citizens and the needs of the local council. I have met many of you at local fund raising functions, or when I tutored in computer technologies at Caloundra, Buderim, Yandina and Nambour. Supporting the local shops and markets, I may have even met you there.

Natural disasters have brought uncertainty and damage to our infrastructure - for example roads, bridges and drainage. Division 9 has also suffered.

Much work needs to be completed in these areas.

Many Australian industries have relocated overseas. The decline of Australian businesses here means great job uncertainty. People are fearful for their future. Our building and tourism industries are at an all time low. Spending is down, and expenses continue to rise. It is time for action from community minded people. I am committed to the community and a sustainable future which will also support future generations.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has to work smarter. It must provide the infrastructure needed to meet the challenges it faces.

Climate change and population

growth are the two major contingencies. The Sunshine Coast now has a powerful argument for strong support from the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments. Their government strategic planning is a strong case for more attention to job training and re-training, education, community and health services. I want to represent you in gaining a solid support structure.

Having heard local criticisms and concerns, I intend to make division 9 prudent in maintenance costs, prudent in new projects and prudent in council costs. With your support and my dedication, direction and hard work, I will provide a powerful advocacy in representation for sustainable and systemic growth that is strategic and particular to our region.

We are fortunate to enjoy the unique life style and environment represented in Division 9 - preserving this is very important. I want to see opportunities provided to Clean Tech Industries on the Sunshine Coast and more support for local businesses. I believe in the importance of small business for community strength.

I represent with respect and consideration individuals community groups and professional organisations in division 9. I will work hard to achieve an overall consensus. Dagun growers market RARE and exotic growers: Phoenix Farm produces the delicious pineapple, mango and tropical frozen fruit crushes available from Dagun Station and selected specialty stores along with the popular “Dagun Delight” a blend of mango, macadamia nuts and ice cream. Barky’s real passion is growing “different” fruit or rare and exotic varieties. He is a member of two rare fruit groups and often produces heirloom variety pumpkins, cucumbers and super sweet melons.

Their farm is 30 acres of red soil which is frost free and overlooks the Mary Valley between Dagun and Amamoor. With a north easterly aspect the farm avoids the worst of the summer sun and benefits from the northerly winter sun. This allows them to grow a massive variety of interesting native and exotic tropical trees.

Their main crop of custard apples is African Pride but they also have 16 other varieties.

It doesn’t stop there. Avocadoes, over 8 varieties, 7 varieties of Fig, 10 of guava, 11

of Kou Bou, 6 mangoes and the list goes on.

Dagun Growers Market has enjoyed the fruit of his labour with bursting red finger limes, and amazing Judean black muscatels (which he also has another 6 other varieties of). Then there’s the staple, sweet Emericon onions.

There are about 130 exotics which are too many for me to mention all here! The Abiu from the Amazon is round with smooth bright yellow skin and creamy sweet, succulent flesh which tastes like Creme Caramel. There’s Jackfruit, Sapodilla, Candle Nut, Jaboticaba, Black Sapote and Elephant Apple. Santol comes from South East Asia and is called the ”lolly fruit”. Or how about the French peanut which is a Brazilian tree that produces edible seeds that are delicious raw, boiled, fried and roasted. The flavor is similar to peanut.

Roasted seeds can also be ground to make a hot drink similar to hot chocolate.

CANDIDATE for Division 12, Tony Wellington, has set his sights on the region’s trash. “It seems that the amalgamated council’s decision to stop the kerbside clean-up service, remove the free tip vouchers for residents, and also increase tip fees has had a definite knockon effect,” said Wellington. “The recent Clean Up Australia Day event saw more than 9 tonnes of rubbish collected across the Noosa region. That figure was well above previous years. In fact it was a 50 per cent more than the previous record of 6 tonnes in 2010.” “Significant amounts of household rubbish are being dumped in parks and reserves. On Clean Up Australia Day, the team at Ringtail Creek Road managed to fill a large household trailer with furniture, a gas stove and countless tyres. Elsewhere there were increases in the number of mattresses, white goods and other

household items being retrieved. I have personally found piles of refuse dumped in Tewantin National Park.

This problem is not going to be solved by council’s proposed education program. It requires direct policy action.”

“Whilst campaigning I have been talking with a wide range of residents, and many of them have raised the issue of disposing of bulky trash. For pensioners, or those without access to trailers, it’s a real dilemma.”

“I would argue that Noosa lost its kerbside bulk collection service to bring it into line with Maroochy. Maroochy never had a regular, scheduled kerbside pick up, so we’ve been ‘harmonised’ down to their standards.”

“When the Regional Council scrapped the kerbside collections, it was for a reported saving of $900,000 per year. Yet according to Council’s own documents, the Waste Management Budget for 2011/12 has an

operating surplus of more than $7 million.

So while collection services are being reduced and fees are increased, Council is looking to make a $7 million profit from its waste services. To me that doesn’t make sense.”

“But Noosa is also set to become the Coast’s dumping ground. Despite recent extensions to Caloundra and Nambour Landfill centres, there is no plan for what to do with rubbish after they reach capacity by 2020.

Easter generosity THE families of Cooroy State School have shown the generous heart of the local school community recently by contributing to an Easter Charity Collection for local kids in care.

The school Chaplain, Linda Whysall or “Chappy” as she’s affectionately know by, has been working with the school community and a local Charity Organisation to ensure that local kids in care and their families receive a basket full of goodies this Easter.

The local charity organisation consists of a group of mum’s who have banded together to create a vehicle to collect donations and then distribute Easter Baskets through local support organisations to kids in care.

Each classroom had an Easter Nest or Basket in their room to bring donations into. “Chappy” hopped in weekly over the past 2 weeks to collect the donations. “Chappy” and the school’s administration have been overwhelmed by the generosity of donated Easter goodies and want to send a huge thank you out to all who contributed. There were over 120 Easter bunnies donated. Not to mention fluffy toys, Easter eggs, Easter lollies and one class of lower primary children drew lovely pictures and cards to wish the recipients a Happy Easter. What a wonderful expression of one of the school’s core values, “Care for others”.

news Students get on Board SOME people may perceive community Boards to be made up of old people with nothing better to do; but not the Lower Mill Board.

The Lower Mill Board mixes experience with innovation and youth as it opens the Boardroom to two young people from Noosa District State High School. Students Ben May and Jayde McGrath are being welcomed to the Board at the April meeting. Young people are the Board members of the future and caretakers of the local area; so why not ask them for their ideas about the future of Cooroy and in particular their ideas for the community space at Mill Place?

This is the approach the Lower Mill Board is now taking after recommendations that emerged from a 2009 Australian Research Council Linkage grant connecting Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Queensland University of Technology and Noosa District State High School.

Ben and Jayde will be representing their fellow students when decisions are made about the future of the Lower Mill site. Long standing Board Member and current Chairperson Carol Christensen said “since having the students involved we have been amazed at the expansive ideas they came up with for the master plan. It has always been in my mind that these students will become the future guardians of this community

precinct”. Ben and Jayde have been involved in the Lower Mill linkage project since 2009 and have contributed to many presentations about the site via video and written media both locally and for International conferences in Beijing, China and Reykjavík, Iceland. Board Member Ray Kelly said he is very excited about having young people on the Board. The Lower Mill Board welcomes the students to the Board, displaying a model of true community engagement rarely seen throughout the world.

The students in Year 8 2009 that designed the log maze.

A DONATION of 21 logs from Boral enables a maze to be constructed at Mill Place. Noosa District State High School students designed a log maze in 2009. The design came about after the students involved in the Lower Mill site research project heard stories of scouting, felling, milling and drying timber from former workers of the Mill. John Bath, Ron Sutton and Owen Woodford recalled stories of the time they spend at the mill. These stories inspired the students to incorporate the lived experiences into their designs for the community space. The history of the site and the town and the heritage-listed buildings also contributed forming the backdrop for ideas, stories and designs. To ensure the heritage is not lost as the site moves towards

the future the Lower Mill Board carefully considers all additions to the site.

Thanks to Boral 21 logs will be dug into the ground to replicate a forest. One log will be charred to signify the desired species or prize tree once found by the timber getters.

The maze will provide an attractive place for children and young people to play and a space for learning about the history of logging in Cooroy. Each of the logs in the maze will have a Perspex window displaying a sample of a tree species that was once found in the local area and milled at the site. The maze represents an intergenerational approach to school-community engagement and displays “best practice” in engaging a community for the community.

Queensland’s best woodwork on show at Cooroy THE state’s top craftsmen will go head to head next month at the annual Wood & Craft Show in Cooroy. It will be hosted by the Cooroora Woodworkers Club.

The event will be held at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday the 11th-12th of May. Doors open at 8.30 - 5:30 Friday & 8:30 - 3:00 on Saturday . This event attracts close to 3,000 spectators.

Woodwork clubs come from across Queensland to compete in this event. There are 6 categories for clubs to enter, wood turning, general woodwork, carving, fret work, pyrography and new this year, toy making.

Five independent judges will be brought in to judge each event and announce the winners. This will be one of the best collections

of timber craftsmanship in Queensland. The craftsmen and craftswomen have put weeks and often months of hard work into creating their masterpieces. People will be truly amazed by what can be done with a basic piece of timber. There will also be stalls and crafts for sale and different demonstrations.

A beautifully hand crafted table made by Peter Bradford will be raffled off on Saturday it is valued at $1,500. People will have an opportunity to see the Cooroora Club’s Sawmill in action and fresh cut wood slabs will be for sale.

It will be a great day out and a chance for clubs to show off their best pieces of work.

Council on the hunt for pests DON’T be alarmed if Sunshine Coast Council officers stop by soon to investigate pests lurking around your property.

Council officers will be conducting a Pest Survey Program in accordance with Section 241 of the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 throughout the region.

Community Response Manager, Sheryl Krome said the purpose of the program was to monitor the distribution and spread of declared pest plants and animals and raise community awareness about them.

“Council’s Pest and Vector Control Officers will be carrying out the survey in rural and peri-urban properties throughout the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Krome said.

“The Pest Survey Program commenced on 2 April 2012 and will continue until 22

June 2012. “We will be promoting to landowners best practice in the treatment of declared pest plants while also monitoring compliance with the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002.”

Particular emphasis will be placed on inspecting the localities of Maleny, Witta, Meridan Plains, Belli Park, Conondale, Eerwah Vale, Gheerulla, Lake MacDonald and Cooroibah as part of the Pest Survey Program.

A copy of the Pest Survey Program is available for inspection and/or purchase during the period of the program at council’s Customer Contact Centres.

Dray aims to make a difference AS a Gympie Regional Council candidate I look forward to making a difference not just only in Division 5 but in the whole of the Gympie, Wide Bay and Cooloola Regions which encompass the newly amalgamated shires. As a constituent who fought hard to get past the red tape and entrenched methodologies of a previous council just to make progress in a very simple matter I am dedicated to bringing representation, transparency and plain old common sense to the Gympie Regional Council, if elected.

As a practical person with knowledge in building, agriculture,

grazing, dairying, electronics and business operation, I believe that I am well suited to understanding and responding to the diverse needs of constituents. As a businessman I wonder why the amalgamation of our shires has not realized the economies of scale as promised by the proponents of this unwanted affiliation. As a resident who looks at an ever increasing rates bill but sees no change in personal situation I wonder about the fiscal acuity of the current administration. Good governance is not just about more of the

same or keeping the masses in check with closed meetings. To my mind good governance is about involving constituents, having the imagination to implement fresh ideas and having a council which is thoroughly transparent in operation.

Cooroy VIEW Club VIEW Club Cooroy ladies enjoyed a wonderful brunch at the delightful Metal Tiger Tea Emporium on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. We were provided with a great range of teas (also coffee to our suprise) and we ate authentic Asian street food which was tasty and made for a great morning as we overlooked the Noosa River on what was one of the finer days this month.

Pomona rides to school!

IN an amazing turn out one third of Pomona State School’s student population participated in National Ride 2 School Day. The event was to be held on Friday 23rd March, however due to the amount of rain that we recently have had, the school decided to postpone the event till Thursday 29 th March. The blue sky and sunshine brought the students out in droves.

The local bike shop, Cognition Bikes in Noosa Outlook, Tewantin was there to offer some fun cycling activities and prizes. There were “roll as long as you can”, rim and stick obstacle course and a skills riding course. The children had lots of fun. This all happened at Stan Topper Park before the group of 70-80 Children split into 2 groups and rode to School. .

Co-owner of Cognition Bikes and father Greg Pott said, “It was great to see such a large turn out, and the support of both the teachers and parents was fantastic.”

Everyone had a great time riding to school, once there the bike rack filled and overflowed onto the lawn.

Greg Long, Co-owner and father commented at the end “We would like to thank the local businesses Pomona Newsagency, A touch of the Past Antique Store and Ignite Noosa for donating the prizes as it really made it a community event and helped to encourage the students to get on their bikes”.

With a 100% increase on last year, it looks as if Pomona State School is really getting into cycling!

St Patrick’s Catholic Church Pomona ON Sunday 15th April this year St Patrick’s will close (albeit temporarily) for the much anticipated restoration and extension.

Bishop Brian Finnigan will be presiding at the last Eucharist in the old Church as we celebrate the ritual of taking leave of the sacred space. The Church celebrates its 90th year on the 26th March and I hope that when we reopen St Patrick’s we will be able to celebrate its 90th Anniversary in style.

LOCAL award winning artists Marilyn Spencer and Don Milner have just returned from a teaching trip to New Zealand. They have been asked to return there to tutor in six months time as all attendants commended it.

Don, an award winning artist of many Qld awards, has had many of his paintings purchased by tourists from around the world and is in demand for his tuition at Chic Image Pomona. Marilyn has won several awards and received another two in 2011. With her love of art she wanted to teach those with talent that either have life threatening issues or can’t afford expensive workshops, as she herself battles a serious health problem. “I feel that art is great therapy. I’ll paint till I drop and will help anyone to get started,” says Marilyn.

Chic Image was opened some eight years ago by Marilyn and has grown into a popular art tuition spot with a waiting list to get into classes. After moving to bigger premises it allowed her to sell discounted artists accessories for students with some sales up to 50% off. Classes last year saw several students coming in from New Zealand, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Tin Can Bay, Gympie and country areas.

After nine students, some beginners, took out art prizes in a six-week period it was then arranged for Don to tutor in New Zealand.

Don is a master of most media, traditional style and Marilyn tutors pastel, acrylic and oils. traditional and contemporary.

Congratulations to students whose art work of 3 acrylic, 2 oils and 4 pastels received awards last year at Gympie Art Show, Mary valley, Noosa, Sunshine coast and Brisbane competitions.

Marilyn at present is teaching an art therapist, an art teacher, two psychologists, pensioners and many students with health issues, all are producing good work. A few students have been coming three and four years now so they are planning their own exhibition in coming months. “The only problem is we don’t get enough time to paint for ourselves and Don has commissions coming in and exhibitions to plan for,” says Marilyn. “The next big one is the Rotary awards in Eagle Street Brisbane in April.”

Both artists have work accepted for this. Don will also tutor at the winter art school in Toowoomba.

ON Saturday, April 28, It’s a Fashion Thing will be holding a fashion parade in the RSL Hall combining with the cent sale to raise money for repairing the Hall.

The fashion parade will start at 1pm showing a range of clothing for children up to mature age ladies as well as their exclusive locally designed range of Lola.g plus the Lola.g shoes from $15 a pair or two for $25. With the cooler weather upon us it’s a good opportunity to get a glimpse of their new Autumn range. There will be dance performances by a few of our local dancers.

Owner of It’s a Fashion Thing, Michelle Atkinson, says, “Being a local girl since 1990, I believe it’s important to stand by our community and offer a helping hand. After sharing many events in the hall over the years, and now my children are also sharing some of these events, we hope everyone can come and show your support at the fashion parade and cent sale.”

DHOM’S Kitchen is one year old this month. Dhom and Spencer have just returned from Thailand with exciting new dishes they look forward to sharing with their customers and friends in the coming months. Their most popular dish at the moment is their ‘Chuu Chee’ banana prawn red curry special.

“It has been selling out every night “, says Spencer.

“The name ‘Chuu Chee’ derives from the sound the curry makes while it is cooking”.

This month is Thai New Year, Songkran, traditionally a time to show respect to elders. To celebrate their birthday and the Thai New Year, Dhom’s Kitchen will have a special Northern Thai set menu on Saturday 28 April consisting of five courses. The cost is just $48 per person including corkage. “We have chosen a northern theme as in Northern Thailand New Year’s celebrations last at least six days as compared to just a couple of days in the rest of the country!” says Dhom. “The menu will feature produce sourced from our friends at the Noosa Farmers Market and Big Pineapple Growers Market as well as from our own kitchen garden”.

Dhoms Kitchen has a new extended take-out menu and their freezer is fully stocked with hand made Thai curry sauces available for purchase. Dhom and Spencer would love you to cook Thai at home when not dining at their restaurant. Please come in and ask them for any Thai cooking advice. They also stock a range of difficult to find Thai ingredients, including the Megachef range of (gluten free) gourmet products: fish sauce, oyster sauce and non-GMO soy sauce. Brendan’s film career on the rise BRENDAN Galinie, a 22yr old Cooroy Local, has been successfully chosen to direct and produce his first short film as part of Metro Screen’s First Break Funding program. The Sydney based program along with prestigious Screen Australia, helps upcoming filmmakers to launch their screen careers with funding support to produce their debut short films. Over 200 people submit a script each year, with 10 talented writers/directors being selected. Brendan, who is now based in Sydney, diverted from a promising career as a ballet dancer, who started at the age of 6yrs with Brigette Kay of To The Pointe Ballet School at Noosaville, moving to Melbourne with the Australian Ballet School. A string of ankle injuries forced him to choose a different career path. After an 8 month stint dancing in the USA with Royal Caribbean cruise ships, he returned to Australia in 2010 and decided to pursue his love for acting and directing. Whilst attending Nida and

auditioning for acting roles in Sydney he has enjoyed exploring the screenwriting and directing side of the industry, helping him to stay creative and in control of his future.

Brendan will make his short film this year with the Grant and plans on taking his directorial debut on the international film festival circuit next year.

Brendan says “Most, if not all directors, begin their careers with short films.

They are the perfect opportunity to show audiences the kind of style and vision you have as a filmmaker.

If a short film does well at international festivals, it can really help to get an emerging writer or director noticed which can help with getting support for future projects. I think at the moment, more and more young actors are creating their own opportunities by writing their own scripts. It’s a great way to create stories that you feel passionate about, rather than waiting for someone to hire you.”

Belli Hall hosts Biggest Morning Tea BELLI’S last dance in March went ahead despite heavy rain and local flooding with Sunshine Swing band braving the elements to provide their popular live entertainment.

Despite heavy downpours, sixty two dancers, including young families, enjoyed the live sound and danced the evening away, enjoying a hearty supper in the usual country style. There was a fun community spirit with experienced dancers spontaneously teaching visiting young novice dancers their old-time dance moves. Dances are

QUEENSLAND Health is encouraging people to get immunised before this year’s ‘flu season begins.

More than 140 cases of influenza have been recorded since January, which is lower than the average number of notifications.

But the State’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said that was no reason to become complacent about guarding against the virus.

“Influenza is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing,” Dr Young said.

“It’s especially important for people in ‘at risk’ groups to be vaccinated which is why Queensland Health provides free ‘flu immunisation for the elderly, pregnant women, Indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk

due to medical conditions such as heart and respiratory diseases.

“As is the case every year, this year’s vaccine is based on the virus strains circulating in the northern hemisphere including the influenza A H3N2 strain, influenza A H1N1 and an influenza B strain.

“This reliable and safe vaccine is available to prevent people getting the ‘flu.”

Anyone over the age of six months who is not severely allergic to vaccine ingredients can be immunised.

“Annual vaccination against influenza reduces the chances of catching the ‘flu and the severity of it if you do contract it,” Dr Young said.

Vaccination is available through GPs, Aboriginal medical services and other immunization providers.

As they have 9 Doctors, this means the practice will now guarantee that any new or existing patient has the option of asking for a Bulk Billed appointment with a Doctor from that practice and every effort will be made to get it on the same day.

Do Alternative Therapies really work?

THE most common objection to Alternative Medicine from conventional physicians is that it’s ‘not proven’. What Doctors mean by this is that Alternative Medicine has not been rigorously tested the way pharmaceutical drugs have been.

But guess what? The Doctors are wrong!

Alternative Medicine has been rigorously tested, in a multitude of ways.

That’s right, Acupuncture has been tested, Naturopathy & herbal supplements have been tested, Massage, Chiropractic adjustments, Yoga, you name the Alternative therapy and it’s been tested, probably many times.

Why haven’t you heard of these results?

Well without going into some conspiracy

theory, there is simply no single corporation that would benefit from having these studies widely published, so they are generally kept quiet and known only to people who read the medical journals where they were originally published.

Here are a couple of examples that really are amazing: A study published in the medical journal Multiple Sclerosis- Clinical & Laboratory Research in August 2003 where researchers evaluated Reflexology as a treatment for MS. They found that reflexology decreased the patients symptoms with paresthesias (burning, prickling, tingling, itching), urinary problems and

spasticity(uncontrolled spasms). This was compared with a control group who received ‘fake’ reflexology.

Another study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in July 2002, saw Aromatherapy help patients suffering from severe dementia to be significantly less agitated and more interested in social interaction and participating in constructive activities. Both of these studies were what Western medical practitioners consider ‘gold standards’ of study, as they were randomized, double-blind control trials. In both cases there were NO side effects of the treatments.

These 2 studies are two of hundreds that have been conducted around the world,

many of them proving conclusively that Alternative Medicine works!

We are privileged in the fact that we have numerous types of Alternative Medicines to choose from, which are effective, proven treatments that can help people with a wide variety of illnesses, conditions and symptoms without causing the discomfort, side effects and potential death that pharmaceuticals can and have caused in so many cases.

Is your headache a pain in the neck?

HEADACHES where the pain originates in the cervical spine (upper spine), neck and upper shoulders are often referred to as a “cervicogenic” headache. Many times, these headaches can be a byproduct of injuries such as whiplash, joint or muscle trauma and more commonly due to poor prolonged posture or even cases of severe stress.

Headaches are one of the most common ailments in modern society, approximately 12-15% of the population suffers from headaches each year. Usually these are minor stress or tension related headaches, and in some people are more severe migraine headaches. Unfortunately, one type of headache that is often overlooked and misdiagnosed is the cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headaches are one of the most common types of headache, and are clinically defined as pain that is present in the head, but which originates in the cervical spine. The pain associated with this condition is an example of referred pain. This occurs because the nerves that supply the sensation in the upper neck also supply the skin overlying the head, forehead, jawline, back of the ear and behind the eye. Pain that begins in the base of your neck in the cervical spine and then progressively spreads upwards into the head is a typical symptom of cervicogenic headache. There are two symptoms that are classic to those with

cervicogenic headaches. The first is that the headache can be made worse or actually onset by head or neck movement.

The second is that there is marked tenderness in the suboccipital (base of head) region.

A thorough examination by your physiotherapist or doctor is usually sufficient to diagnose cervicogenic headache. Occasionally further investigations may be required, such as Xray or CT scan / MRI if there are some complicating symptoms and circumstances. These headaches arising from the neck generally respond quite quickly to treatment and a complete resolution of symptoms can be expected if there are no underlying causes still present. In some cases where the headaches are quite long-term (chronic) your physiotherapist may have to address your posture (study, work and sleep), spinal stiffness, muscle weakness / tightness and imbalances, along with advice on exercises, pillows for sleep and other lifestyle factors.

Immediate treatment is the best management for all headaches caused by the neck that do not resolve within a few days of rest and analgesia. IMPACT Boxing Academy travelled to the Inala PCYC last Saturday for the first tournament for 2012. The Impact crew has been training hard for this tournament since mid January.

First up for the Impact crew was Connor “The Crucifier” Jones. Jones’s opponent was Chris Kahn from Brisbane. Both boys boxed well for the duration of the fight, but it was Jones who had the better footwork. Jones continued to attack Kahn from different angles until the final bell sounded and Jones was awarded the victory by way of a unanimous points decision.

Next up for Impact was Keegan “The Killer” Codd. Codd was making his long awaited return to the ring after a two year break from the sport. In his first fight back Codd climbed into the ring with the more experienced boxer, Tim Strain from the Tweed Heads boxing club. From the opening bell Strain looked to settle in behind his left jab, moving around as Codd also jabbed well looking for his range. Strain pushed forward again and Codd pounced and countered with a cracking right hand that sent Strain flying back into the ropes. Codd followed with a devastating combination to the body and Strain was down on the canvas.

Strain managed to beat his eight count from the referee and was set to continue the round, when he met with another of Codd’s lightning fast right hands and was down again. This time the referee had seen enough and Codd was awarded the victory by way of a KO. Next up for the Impact crew was Maddy “The Mauler” Phillips who was making her debut. In what was de-

Pete “The Menace” Murray also put in a gallant effort on debut, but it just wasn’t to be his night.

Keegan Codd certainly let everyone in his division know that he is back and means business with his first round knock out. WE are calling it a season from heaven, Black Caviar the world’s greatest race horse has won 19 races in a row. Now at Cooroora United Summer Soccer Sevens the mighty Reds beat that by one. After winning 20 games, the reds took out the league trophy and also the Grand Final cup. These guys stormed to a premiership win on the back of an unbeaten run and they continued with a grand final slam dunk. That’s nothing short of terrific. There were approximately 50 fans on hand to watch the game as the reds defeated the grey team, and nobody was disappointed by the quality of football shown by either team. It’s an easy format with 2 ladies and 5 men on the pitch, ages ranging from 15 to 50. Anyone can register at our clubhouse for next year. But be quick because there is a limit of 60 players.

And now most of our hero red team begin their 11 a side campaign in the Sunshine Coast League with the first home match scheduled for early May so be sure to keep your eyes open for the advertising banners around Cooroy. We will be playing some of the best young talent the Sunshine Coast has to offer in our own backyard at Cooroora United Soccer Fields.

Tony Mc McCarthy, the senior coach said his side are very keen to get into playing, but said most of all he wants the community to come out and support the team.

“I think if we get a good start and travel around mid table, then when May comes around and we get a run of home games, we

can mount our challenge for a top four finals spot. The key to success is without doubt our community support for the club and players and our home ground advantage for our games. Both equally important.

“When I’m thinking game plan, my idea is to keep switching tactics on a need to do so basis. We are not going to let any team adapt to us and allow them to devise a plan to beat us”, said McCarthy. “We will be up there and in the hunt. We know we have a team that can play but emotionally we have to take our best performance onto the field week after week. It will be a case of getting our mental state in order as we get going and finding our rhythm.”

In the game against Bribe Island last week, gun striker Rhys Jones and game player Joel Mehonoshen provided the biggest influence in the destruction of Bribie Island team, 3 goals to 2. It was a dominant performance with Cooroora having 18 scoring chances to Bribie’s 7. Coach McCarthy played his role in mid field doing plenty of talking and at one point his opposite number asked him if he ever shuts up. After the match in the dressing room the lads commented on how much of a calming influence Tony’s directions brought to the team.

EMMERSON Ball, the tiny 8 year old rider from Lake Macdonald, and her two ponies, Barjack Mr Bojangles and Owendale Tangelo, rode the pony Barjack Mr Bojangles to win Champion Girl Rider 12 years and under against a hotly contested field of much older riders at the Toowoomba Royal show 2012 last Saturday.

Emmerson and her ponies also bought home a swag of Champion, Reserve and Supreme ribbons and in the process, have qualified for the 2013 Grand Nationals to be held in Sydney next year.

This is the best of the best riders in Australia and it is considered an honour and priviledge to be able to ride there.
