Get ready for our revamped hall’s grand reveal

Sponsors are excited about the opening of Cooroy Memorial Hall and School of the Arts set for April 21

LOCAL community groups are polishing their dancing shoes, practising their scales, and gearing up for the long-awaited reopening of Cooroy’s Memorial Hall. The builders are confident everything will be in readiness for the rescheduled opening on 21 April 2018 despite the ongoing wet weather. Noosa mayor Tony Wellington will cut a ribbon to officially open the renovated hall at 2pm. Cooroy Memorial Hall Association spokeswoman Amy Dwyer said she had organised a community concert to celebrate the re-opening that had something for everyone. “We have dancers, singers, a choir, and hopefully even a pipe band,” Mrs Dwyer said.

“We want to celebrate our hall’s new lease of life with the community who have supported us during the restoration works.” The CMHA has worked tirelesslessly for the past 12 months to manage and pay for the extensive renovations for the hall. “The CMHA is very grateful for all the support and sponsorships provided by local people and businesses,” Mrs Dwyer said. (See list of sponsors Page 3) “It’s clear the hall is very important to the community and we look forward to hearing the familiar sounds of tap dancing echoing from the hall again very soon.” More information about the rescheduled opening can be found on the Hall’s facebook page, and on the CMHA’s new webpage at www.cooroyhall.org.au

RYDA an essential part of young drivers’ lives

Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards and Rotary's Geoff Bone celebrating the latest RYDA training day with NDSHS students on March 29 ROAD trauma impacts on all members of our community. Encouragingly, the number of lives lost on our roads continues to fall each year, but every life lost is tragic. Educating drivers in their early years can be a key factor in reducing the toll over time, and our local Rotary clubs are as passionate as ever about taking action to see that happens. The combined Rotary Clubs of Noosa, Noosa Heads, Noosa Daybreak and Cooroy joined forces again this week, assisting in taking more than 100 Noosa District State High School students through the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) Program at The House With No Steps in Doonan. The program sees students taking one day out of school, to receive practical road safety information targeting attitude and awareness of young drivers and their passengers. RYDA targets 16-18 year old students and includes six interactive sessions delivered to small student groups

covering topics such as hazards and distractions, speed and stopping distance, vehicle safety, fatigue and experiences of a crash survivor. RYDA Noosa Committee Chairman, Geoff Bone said if even one life can be saved from this training, then it’s all worthwhile. “Since 2009, the combined Rotary clubs have held 45 program days, with 4,228 Year 11 students having attended the RYDA Program locally. In the bigger picture, more than 500,000 have attended RYDA Australiawide since the program’s inauguration some 20 years ago,” Mr. Bone shared. While attendance by the schools is commendable, RYDA is only attracting about 86% of the Year 11 enrolled students in our local schools. This equates to 2,432 student attendees over the past four years, so there is some work to do. The aim is to have every year 11 student attend. The full day program is free so there is

no reason why every enrolled student can’t attend. For its part, the local Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank have stepped up again in their support of RYDA, committing a further $3,000 to the program in 2018. This financial backing will assist Rotary in attracting more attendees from our region. Cooroy and Pomona senior branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the bank started supporting the RYDA program seven years ago and remains fervent in its support. “This program provides some of the most important lessons students can have in their senior schooling years. Our Noosa Community Bank branches in Cooroy, Tewantin and Pomona continue to believe in RYDA. It also provides another opportunity for us to partner with our local Rotary volunteers in the great work they do in our community,” Mr. Edwards said. To learn more about the RYDA program, go to www.rse.org.au/RYDA or

www.rotarynoosaheads. org.au/RYDA. To discuss details of the program contact President of the Noosa Rotary Club, Tess Alexandroff on 0407 377 210 or Geoff Bone on

0427 708 928. Thanks are also extended to Cricks Noosa for their support in providing a vehicle for the students each RYDA session.

THIS year will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice of World War One and the end of what was then known as the Great War. In 1914 Australia had agreed to send a force of 20,000 soldiers to assist the United Kingdom, however by the end of the war more than 300,000 Australian men and women had left our shores for the war. The official records tell us that over 61,000 Australians were killed and 166,000 were wounded but recent research shows that Australian casualties were even worse than that. Across the world 39 countries were involved in the fighting and while estimates vary, about 37 million became battle casualties of whom 8.5 million were dead. During the winter of 1917-1918 the German commanders had realised that it was now or never for them to try to win the war. The 1917 revolution in Russia had led to an armistice between Russia and the Central Powers of Germany and Austria. With Russia pulling out of the war thousands of German soldiers could be moved from the Eastern Front, to Belgium and France in the west. The United States of America had decided to enter the war and its soldiers would soon be in France and Belgium supporting the Commonwealth and French armies. Germany had a short window of opportunity when they might have a chance to win by a surprise attack at the junction between the French and British armies. And so, as the ice and snow began to melt, and largescale movement was possible, the German Army launched Operation Michael, or the “Kaisers Battle”. On 21 March 1918, the German forces attacked

and across a frontline of 60 kilometres fired 3,500,000 artillery shells in 5 hours. The British army fell back and in sixteen days the Germans advanced about 60 kilometres winning back much of the land they had lost in the previous two years. However, the German push ran out of supplies and men and slowly ground to a halt. This German offensive in the Spring of 1918 had cost each side about 250,000 casualties. The Germans had tried to take the strategic town of Villers Bretonneux, 15 kilometres east of the city of Amiens on 4th April, but a combination of British and Australians held the village. Then on the 24th April a new German assault led by tanks pushed the exhausted British soldiers back from the town. That afternoon two Australian brigadiers planned an unconventional night attack on the Germans in Villers Bretonneux. At 10 pm on Anzac Eve, almost 4000

Australians from the 13th and 15th Brigades carried out a daring attack on the Germans, with one brigade circling to the north of the town and one to the south. The two Australian brigades suffered 1464 casualties, but the Germans were forced out of the town and never regained it during the war. British Brigadier-General George Grogan, VC, wrote 18 years after the battle, “VillersBretonneux will ever be remembered for perhaps the greatest individual feat of the war – the successful counterattack by night across unknown and difficult ground, at a few hours’ notice, by the Australian soldiers” The people of VillersBretonneux remember the battle to this day. At the end of the war they built a memorial to the Australians who freed their town and in 1920 their school was rebuilt using money collected by Victorian school children. The school, L’Ecole Victoria, has signs in each class

room saying “N’oublions jamais L’Australie”, Never forget Australia. In 2009, after the Black Saturday Bushfires in Victoria the children of Villers Bretonneux raised $20,000 to help rebuild a school destroyed in the fires. North of the town the Australian National Memorial stands high on a hill; and in front of it is lies the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery containing the graves of more than 2,100 Australian servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 608 of the burials are unidentified. Every year on Anzac Day, a Dawn Service is held at the Australian War Memorial at VillersBretonneux, and for this year all 7500 places to attend have already been booked. The memorial lists 10,773 names of Australian soldiers with no known grave who were killed in France between 1916 and the end of the war. On the 16th of April a

new memorial and museum will be opened next to the current memorial. Named the Sir John Monash Centre, it is designed to educate a new audience about Australia’s early role in international affairs, reshape patterns of visitation to the Western Front battlefields and in so doing, provide a lasting legacy from the Centenary of Anzac. The Centre is named after General Sir John Monash, who led the Australian Corps with outstanding success on the Western Front in 1918, including the famous 4 July 1918 victory at Le Hamel which became a template for operations that followed. In Cooroy on Anzac Day we will be commemorating with a Dawn Service at the War Memorial in Tewantin Road at 4.55 am and again with a march at 10.30 and a memorial service to follow the march. Muir’s Musings I have considered falling into and following the #DeleteFacebook campaign. I know how distracting and addictive social media is, with its strange pull often dragging its users in with the promise of likes, adoration, invitations and attention from friends. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, drives many to regularly stay connected to their friends through social media. The best part about social media for me is reading the updates from my friends, travelling vicariously to distant places through photographs and postings and sharing in my friends’ trials, tribulations and conundrums. It is a useful, efficient and effective method of keeping in contact with my friends and family who are living and travelling across this incredible planet. When I need to focus on university or school work, I simply turn off the noise that comes from Facebook. Deleting Facebook won’t change the state of the world, or Facebook for that matter. Even if hundreds of thousands of people quit Facebook, the company would not feel it. At its current rate of growth, Facebook will reach 3 billion users by 2020. I understand that the #DeleteFacebook movement is a reaction to the unwarranted use of Facebook users’ political data on 50 million

With Brigid Muir

Americans via the British firm Cambridge Analytica. Alarmingly, the Australian government allegedly met with similar data sourcing firms last year. Not only is the unauthorised use of data concerning, but Facebook is often the platform for the proliferation of hate speech, harassment, fake news, trolling and cyber bullying. One must also realise that Facebook is not the only main internet organisation utilising surveillance systems targeting their users. Google, Twitter and most news organisations monitor their users’ internet movements and run targeted advertising. Few realise that Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are owned by the all-powerful (and all-seeing) Facebook. One can only hope that new legislation will ensure that data collection carried out by internet organisations is undertaken via clear, transparent means, with the terms written out in plain language; not legalese. Organisations should declare up front how they will use the data, and users can withdraw consent at any time. Facebook and other forms of social media could be the forefront for such changes to be implemented. If users come together and demand charge, reform is a likely outcome. Deactivation or deletion of accounts is the capitulation of power. Deactivation is the opposite of activism.

The manager Cherry Bright and the volunteers are doing an amazing job there bringing in a variety of events with something to please everybody. She and the friendly volunteers have created a wonderful experience for people as soon as they walk through the front door. I saw Narnia on the weekend and it was absolutely spectacular seeing teenagers create a live performance of that calibre. Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank FEELING valued is more important than anything. It’s great when it happens at work, at home and in our community. It’s long been a key in successful advertising. As customers, we’re constantly making choices as a result of our connection to a brand - about which car, home, food or big screen TV to buy. But what about the proof behind the statement or the claim? What about when a bank says it has a connection with its community? Does it make you suspicious or feel there must be a catch? Well, the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank is locally owned by our shareholders. It has now returned more than $700,000 to local schools, clubs and organisations in the past few years. How local? To use one example, we have supported Cooroy Fusion for a few years now. Then there’s Cooroy State School. Our commitment to the school have included laptops, robotics programs and a partnership with Rotary Club of Cooroy and Cooroy State School in the annual East Timor Shoe Box collection and more. At Pomona State School, similar projects like Mini-lit programs, the breakfast club program, new books for the library and Pomona in the Park… and we’re only just getting started. Why? Because we wouldn’t be here without their support…your support. Through our customers’ banking we generate profits that go into supporting recipients just like Cooroy and Pomona State Schools. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing with our community.

Our Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches give our communities a real say in their future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. As we work to provide banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. So, if you’re interested in banking where the customer is connected to the bank, give us a try. We have a full range of products just like any full service bank and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most. Our team will be more than happy to share more of our story with you and deliver the right advice and the products you need. Please feel free to drop into the branches or call me on 5447 7131 or 5485 1786. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Make space for the Cooroy Makerspace THE new Cooroy Makerspace located in the Cooroy Library, was officially launched on Friday 6 April by Mayor Tony Wellington, Sandy Bolton and Vicki McDonald (State Librarian). So what is a makerspace? Makerspaces, also called hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs, are places where people gather to work on joint creative projects, typically involving technology. Cooroy Library’s traditional technology training room has been transformed into a community makerspace, designed to provide welcoming areas for making, learning and socialising. Users can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover, using a variety of tools with a digital focus. The space hosts new and emerging technology such as 3D Printers, a Virtual Reality system, sewing machines and a range of different robotics technology. The space encourages users to be creative and learn through experimentation, which will spark new ideas and new ways of thinking. By seeing and sharing what other people have made, new concepts and designs can be generated. Our future will benefit from people who with these new ideas and new ways of thinking, can solve problems with technology. If you are interested in being involved, there are a range of different makerspace workshops

that will inspire you to be creative with technology or you can become a Makerspace Member and use the facilities independently. The project was funded by a State Library of Queensland’s Strategic Priorities Grant Program. For more information www.libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au/maskerspace or email libraryevents@noosa.qld.gov.au to register your interest.

Traffic lights for Cooroy? WITH only three sets of lights in the Shire, Council obviously prefers roundabouts over lights. But, it’s clear that after years of inaction, something needs to be done soon to solve the congestion at the Railway Bridge and Diamond Street intersections in Cooroy. Noosa Council has been informed by the State Government that the installation of traffic lights at the two congested town intersections is the preferred option for a quick solution to traffic problems at these locations. Both roads are state roads and therefore the state is responsible for traffic management. Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, April 11, 2018

While Noosa Council can request solutions (ie roundabouts) it is the state that funds and builds the infrastructure for their roads. The expense of roundabouts is a major reason for nothing happening to date. Both Mayor Wellington and new Nicklin MP Marty Hunt would like feedback on the matter. If traffic lights were the only financially feasible option, would you be in favour of the installation of them or would you prefer to only see roundabouts built? Contact Marty Hunt on 5406 4100 or email Nicklin@parliament.qld.gov.au and Tony Wellington on tony.wellington@noosa.qld.gov.au

news What you need to know about buy now, pay later services

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* TAKE your product home, pay for it within the specified timeframe, get charged 0% interest. What could go wrong? Branded the modernday layby, ‘buy now, pay later’ services essentially offer the same thing, except you get the product up front - the outfit, the watch, even certain domestic flights within Australia. If you haven’t heard of buy now, pay later services, or are keen to know more, we explain what they are, how they work and when it’s possible you could run into financial strife if you’re not careful. What are buy now, pay later services? Buy now, pay later services, such as Afterpay, Openpay and zipPay, are offered by approved retailers and provide another form of payment option when you’re shopping online and sometimes instore. They allow you to buy a product, take it home and pay for it in instalments over a set period of time via an online buy now, pay later account, which deducts your preferred

debit or credit card. While payments are withdrawn automatically (for instance, over four fortnightly instalments if you’re using Afterpay), generally you can make repayments before they are due as well. Purchase limits do apply though and depending on the provider will typically vary according to things like how long you’ve been using the service and your payment track record to date. How do they charge? Many buy now, pay later services are interest and fee free (if you pay on time that is!). If a payment is scheduled to be deducted and you don’t have the money in your account, and haven’t attempted to pay what is owed via other means, you’ll typically be charged a late fee. For that reason, it’s important you have the right amount of money in your account when each instalment is due, and that you’re across any other charges that might be payable before signing up. According to buy now,

pay later services, such as Afterpay, late fees are not a primary revenue driver, with the group saying 80% of its revenue is derived from merchant fees paid by retailers. Another thing to consider, if you’re using your credit card, is while the buy now, pay later provider might not charge interest on your purchase, you may still have to pay interest to your credit card provider if you don’t pay the full amount owing on your credit card by the due date. Key considerations Spending what you don’t have While buy now, pay later services can be very handy if you have available funds and can pay on time, if you don’t, little debts stemming from things like late fees can quickly snowball into bigger debts, which can have a variety of repercussions. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have a budget in place when it comes to spending, so you don’t get in over your head. How your credit rating

could be affected Many buy now, pay later services don’t check your ability to make repayments, so if you’re already in the red, further debt could mean bad news and possibly debt collectors at your door. On top of that, while these services might not check your history, they’re still able to report black marks against you to credit reporting agencies, which could make it hard to borrow money in future. If you have a customer complaint Because you’re not going direct to the retailer when using a buy now, pay later service, you might also want to check out the provider’s dispute resolution policy so that there are no surprises if something you purchased doesn’t turn up, or you want to refund or return something that wasn’t quite right. More information It’s important to check the terms and conditions before you sign up to any new service provider to ensure you’re across things like fees and

various other policies so you don’t get caught out. Please contact us on 07 5447 7740 we can help you work out your combined financial goals, budget better and develop a plan to help you grow your wealth so that you can achieve your goals. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004, trading as Provision Wealth Management, are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Bold move was the right decision TIME certainly goes fast. It’s approaching 1 ½ years since Bold As Love Jewellery set up shop in Cooroy. Prior to opening their jewellery shop in Cooroy, owners Paul and Susan had a successful store in Coolum and are both really pleased at how well they’ve settled into our community. “After 15 years in our Coolum Beach store, we have settled well into the Cooroy business centre and have enjoyed meeting so many locals. We appreciate our clients entrusting us with their jewellery repairs, restorations and remodels,” said Susan. Paul’s interest in jewellery stemmed from working alongside family jewellers in Syd-

ney and continued in the trade relocating to the Sunshine Coast. Susan and Paul both left their current employment/careers in 2000 to go into business for themselves and open “Bold as Love Jewellery”. “We take great pride in designing and creating jewellery pieces ranging from the traditional and classic designs to the more artistic and creative pieces unique to the customer’s interests,” said Paul See in store for all your jewellery maintenance, restoration work and/or to manufacture a special piece of jewellery for yourself or a loved one. Very simply, a small business can’t stay open if there is no cash for inventory, and if there’s no inventory, then there’s nothing to sell and therefore no business. So if you need help to recover any bad debts, don’t put it off. SPM Law can help you, so give them a call on 5440 4800 now.

A new Art Hub in Cooroy

Neil and Gloria Bale at The Art Hub Cooroy

GLORIA and Neil Bale have made some major changes to their business. Trading as ISSA Creations since 2006 the Emerald Street business will now be trading under the banner of ‘The Art Hub Cooroy’. Although they will no longer be stocking art supplies, customers can still access all the services that were previously offered by ISSA Creations but the focus will now be on showcasing the work of local artists and artisans. “We have already sold three works of art, a painting and two pottery items,” said Gloria. “We have had great feedback from customers and visitors to our lovely

town – all are enjoying the opportunity to view local Artists’ creations.” Exhibitions of local Artists/Artisans will be run rotationally every three weeks. The first exhibition was launched on April 7 showing the works of resident artists Helen Peel and Dennis Forshaw. It will run until April 27. Meet the Artist sessions will be scheduled on the first Saturday of each new exhibition. Business hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm. news Resolve disputes calmly with mediation MEDIATION is often confused with meditation. The two words look almost identical at first glance. And the similarities don’t end there. Meditation is the art of focusing your mind on a thought, object or activity to achieve a calm state. Mediation is the art of helping others to resolve differences calmly, through a guided conversation. Cooroy Legal Centre commonly uses mediation to help solve family law disputes, commercial disputes and even neighbourhood disputes without the need for expensive court proceedings. Mediation involves a guided conversation to identify the issues that underlie the parties’ dispute. Parties have a chance to explore solutions that will suit their specific circumstances, and choose ways to resolve the dispute that might not be available to them if a court was making

a decision. Most courts now require parties to attempt mediation before they file applications in any court. When agreements are reached in a mediation, the parties always have the option to transform that agreement into a consent order by a court. That order can then be enforced by the court if necessary. Disputes are a natural part of business and life. Cooroy Legal Centre and Consensus Mediations are more than happy to assist you to arrange a mediation. Mediations – for a half day or a full day – can be arranged within a week. Call 07 5447 7637 or email admin@cooroylegalcentre.com.au to speak with Pamela Sweetapple, Solicitor and Mediator, who will help you calmly mediate your disputes.

Bigger and better than ever

SUNSHINE Coast, you legends! After cyclone Debbie played havoc with last year’s event, this year whirlwind Deb Daybell and her band of volunteers outdid themselves at the Cooroy Denim Sale raising an incredible $40,000. “That’s around 1,500 extra potentially life-saving calls we can take on the 13 11 14 Lifeline Telephone Crisis Line,” said Deb.

“Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and everyone who supported us by attending. We couldn’t do this important work without you. “Next year the Denim Sale is moving to the Cooroy Memorial Hall, 23 Maple St, Cooroy - just up the road. The newly renovated hall is a much bigger venue and because of this we will be changing the date to May 2019 when we will have more amazing stock available.”

Tall Trees Exhibition seeks submissions from local Artists WELL known for its diverse creative offerings, the 2018 Tall Trees Art Exhibition is again inviting local artists to be a part of the community led experience in the Noosa Hinterland. Held in the picturesque township of Cooran, the exhibition aims to promote and bring together local artistic talent and provide a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale over the busy weekend to patrons from near and afar. Exhibition organiser Mia Hacker says the high quality of work produced by local artists in the hinterland is exciting and a wide variety of artistic mediums is again expected to attract the attention of an artistically supportive community and event patrons. “It is a real pleasure for us to share in the enthusiasm for creative pursuits in this community and to offer local artists the opportunity to exhibit their work and we really enjoy curating the pieces through a subjective and sensitive process of deliberation as we seek to identify the artist’s inspiration”, she said. “We are also excited to confirm that owing to

the success of last year’s inaugural street format, this year’s exhibition will again take place along King Street in a collaboration between local businesses and the community”, said Mia. The exhibition’s Bendigo Bank Meet the Artists Opening Night will occur on Friday 29 June from 6pm at popular local venue Hinterland Restaurant. The exhibition will continue in multiple venues along King Street until 5pm on Sunday 1st July. Residents of Cooran and surrounding hinterland areas are encouraged to contribute and to share their creative pursuits as experiential, emerging, part-time or experienced artists. The closing date for Expressions of Interest is May 1st and artists of all creative mediums are encouraged to apply. Please register your interest via email to talltreesart@gmail.com with your contact info and if possible, a sample photo of your artwork. Alternatively, you can contact Mia Hacker on 0437 721 966. Firecracker Diana Anaid to play The Bunker

ALTERNATIVE singer/ songwriter and 90’s favourite Diana Anaid is heading to the Sunshine Coast for what promises to be an unforgettable night, as she performs in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday 27 April. Diana returns with the quirky and upbeat My Queen,

on her ‘Better Girl’ album tour of the East Coast. A rebellious firecracker, Diana pushes boundaries lyrically and emotionally; calling her albums a “tool-kit for survival”. An uncompromising artist, with jagged-edged alt pop and emotional relevance, she’s an

inspiration and dynamic powerhouse performer a totally passionate oneoff. Starting in 1997, Anaid’s self-funded and self-produced feralfolk debut stood out amongst the hip hop and teen-pop that was dominating the 90’s airwaves, spawning the #1 alternative hit I Go Off, and leaving many to wonder if this young mum was just another one trick pony. Diana’s follow up I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant saw her receive her 5th ARIA nomination and her second inclusion in Triple J’s Hottest 100, crossing into commercial radio with Don’t Believe In Love and silencing those who had placed her in the one-hit-wonder pile. With comparisons to Liz Phair, P.J Harvey and Ani DiFranco, Diana Ah Naid (as she was known until changing it to the palindromic Anaid) in 2004 cracked the U.S market with Last Thing and her ‘No Boys Allowed’ campaign, which saw the single climb into the Billboard Top 40. Anaid is a

stand-out musician who “continues delivering authentic, original music” (Kathy McCabe)”, and is a pioneer of a “Different kind of girl power” (Music Network). Her first album in seven years, with video clip for Can’t Apologise by Rock n Roll Hall of Fame recipient Nick Egan (Oasis, Duran Duran ), My Queen was mastered in the UK by Tim Young (Massive Attack/Madonna) and its list of impressive contributors have helped to create the album of Diana’s career. Cowritten with long-time guitarist Nathan Correy, the album’s 11 songs reveal the tremendous personal and musical growth of the artist with themes of endurance and transformation, capably backed by some of the country’s best players and produced by ARIA award winner Steve James (Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees). Diana’s career highlights include US Billboard Top 40 placement, 5 ARIA nominations, 2 inclusions in Triple J’s Hottest

health Restoring flexibility, mobility and well being with Yoga

COOROY RAG

ARE you hesitant to try a yoga class because you feel you are too old or not flexible or strong enough? Perhaps you tried and felt it was not suitable for your individual needs. Yoga can benefit students of any age, primarily because it can be modified to suit all fitness levels and capabilities. Robyn from Elambah Coaching is a classically trained Yoga teacher and extremely passionate about helping people increase their quality of life through both yoga and holistic wellness. Yoga helps to restore flexibility, mobility and well being for students of all ages and capabilities. ‘I teach a number of different styles of yoga per week and saw that students with mobility concerns and chronic conditions, such as arthritis were receiving amazing benefits. Studies conducted in the United States and India indicated impressive results for programs aimed at increasing mobility in older students. Creating the Gentle Yoga program has been extremely rewarding for my students quality of life.’ The Gentle Yoga program, designed for those with mobility and joint injuries, is practiced either on a chair or the mat with supportive props.

Designed not to move quickly or go from standing to siting repeatedly, it is suitable for people recovering from injuries, arthritis, auto-immune diseases, PTSD and mental health concerns. The movements ease joint pain, improve coordination, self-awareness and self-confidence. Each movement is preformed with awareness of the physical movement, integrated with breath and the movement of energy though the body. Periodic rest is taken to ensure the class is peaceful and gentle. The major benefits of the Gentle Yoga program for older students include: 1. Protecting Joints and Strengthening Bones: The specific asanas related to joint movement, help circulate the synovial fluid, which feeds the cartilage keeping them nourished. Studies consistently show that the weight-bearing activity of yoga helps slow bone thinning, reducing the risks of osteoporosis, particularly among postmenopausal women. 2. Builds strength & Improves Balance: Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults. With slow, measured movements and strengthening poses, yoga can help you achieve better balance and prevent falls as you age. 3. Reduces Anxiety & Boosts Mood: Yoga’s combination of breathing, meditation and movement creates an overall sense of well-being. Studies have shown that yoga increases levels of the brain chemical GABA, which helps to calm nerves. The regular practice of yoga asanas, pranayama (breathe control) and meditation can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life. “I have just completed four, one hour yoga sessions with Robyn which focus on immobility. I now find a definite improvement in y flexibility, mobility and general well being. The yoga movements and postures are gentle, relaxing and are being professionally researched which suits my age related back, joint and chronic arthritis problems. I highly recommend this program.” Vi Winter (retired teacher)”

OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA) is a degenerative disease that affects the cartilage of joints. Cartilage is a firm, flexible connective tissue that lines the surface of many joints and provides shock absorption and cushioning for the bony surfaces of those joints as they move. During the process of OA, cartilage gradually begins to break down and is worn away. This means that the bony surfaces below the cartilage start to rub together, creating increased stress and friction. The body reacts to this increased stress by creating small bony deposits around the joint, as more of these are created the joint becomes increasingly painful and difficult to move. The hip is one the joints most commonly affected by osteoarthritis. While OA is generally considered to be a disease associated with aging, younger people can be affected, particularly following trauma to the hip. As a general rule, however, the cartilage in our bodies loses elasticity as we age, making it more susceptible to damage. Other risk factors for the development of OA are a family history of OA, previous traumatic injury of the hip, obesity, improper formation of the hip at birth (developmental dysplasia), genetic defects of the cartilage, impingement of the hip (femoroacetabular impingement) and a history of intense weight bearing activities. The most common symptoms of hip OA are pain and stiffness with reduced movement of the hip, particularly in the direction of internal rotation. These symptoms in a person over the age of 50, in the absence of a trauma that may have caused a fracture, indicate possible OA. Pain originating from the hip joint can be felt as a deep ache that can be noticed in the groin, buttocks, thigh or even knee. It is also typical for sufferers of OA to experience stiffness in the morning upon

health

waking that lasts less than 30-60 minutes. Grating or cracking sensations with hip movements are also common complaints, along with mild to moderate joint swelling. In the early stages, mild pain may be felt with activities such as walking or running. As the disease progresses these activities will become more painful with the muscles that provide additional support to the joint becoming weaker, exacerbating the disease process. For many people, a total hip replacement may be necessary to reduce pain and restore function. For mild to moderate cases of OA, physiotherapy can help to reduce pain and maintain function for as long as possible. Keep the musculature around the hip as Strong and healthy as possible can have a significant impact on your quality of life and your physiotherapist work with you to help you to set and reach your goals for treatment Treatment will also include stretching, trigger point therapy, joint mobilization to increase the joint’s mobility, and a personalised exercise program, including hydrotherapy and isometric exercises that work to increase muscle strength while putting less pressure on the joint. For those whose best course of treatment is surgical joint replacement, physiotherapy can help to achieve great outcomes by helping with effective preparation and rehabilitation, getting you on your way to recovery as quickly as possible. None of the information in this article is a replacement for proper medical advice. Always see a medical professional for advice on your individual condition. Study Ayurvedic Medicine in Cooroy THE Cooroy Campus of the Ayurveda College opened in Noosaville three years ago, delivering the nationally recognised Diploma of Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation (HTL52615). In that time the College has doubled in size and we are bringing to attract quite a few international students into the course. For the Sunshine Coast, the Ayurveda College in Cooroy is something special. There are only three nationally recognised Colleges in Australia that teach this course and the one now open in Cooroy has been running for 38 years, out of New South Wales originally. “The College is expanding as the interest in Ayurveda is growing across Australia, as well as our population’s use of complementary medicine,” said Heidi DeWald Veraa, Founder of Life in Balance Ayurveda and Yoga and Ayurveda College Cooroy. A fact from the organisation, Complementary Medicines Australia released to the Federal prebudget Submission in 2016 states that in just two years the Australian Complementary medicines’ industry has grown from 2.3 billion to 4.2 billion (nearly doubling) with increasing acceptance and demand from customers. The industry employs over 6,000 direct high-value jobs across Australia. “We want to train practitioners who are highly

skilled and ready for the workforce by the end of the course,” Heidi said, ”These practitioners of Ayurvedic Medicine will begin to support the demand in the complementary medicine industry and provide more jobs for the Sunshine Coast.” For those curious and interested in studying Classical Ayurveda, the next intake for 8th May 2018 is now open. The course covers classical Ayurvedic philosophy and theory but students also learn practical and clinic practices right from the very first few weeks of the course and continues to the very end. Every day in class, students cook lunch together, which gives them a practical understanding of the importance of diet in Ayurveda and how it changes with the season. Students are also trained in therapeutic yoga, will make some Ayurvedic oils and medicines together, study medicines, as well as undertaking detailed case-studies and classical Ayurvedic therapies to ensure vocational competence at completion. Birth and beyond ON Wednesday 16th May, Alecia Staines, will be taking time out of her busy schedule to talk to the community about her work as Director of national advocacy organisation Maternity Consumer Network. Maternity Consumer Network is an organisation which advocates for improved outcomes for mothers through the care they receive antenatally, at birth and postnatally. Alicia says that currently, up to one in three mothers experience birth trauma, 1 in 6 experience perinatal depression and 1 in 10 experience PTSD. It is known that the rising intervention rates in birth are contributing to worse emotional outcomes for our mothers, and this in turn affects our whole community. Despite high quality evidence and demand, only 10% of women can access a known midwife. In NZ, this is around 95%. At a recent meeting with Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt, the Maternity Consumer Network requested more transparency in outcomes in the maternity sector, a restructuring of funding mechanisms and for the Commonwealth to take over the national maternity plan. Locally, Alicia says, there is a need to ensure mothers can birth close to home, as this has the best outcomes. Community based clinics are disappearing and there is an increasing move towards relocating maternity care to metropolitan areas, contrary to evidence and recommendations by state and federal reviews. Alicia is currently working with Nicklin MP, Marty Hunt to re-open
