Bowlers dilemma resolved

Ron McCarthy (Listra Pty Ltd) has some exciting plans in store for Cooroy’s new Sports Club

LISTRA Pty Ltd has been successful in the purchase of the Cooroy Bowling Green and Clubhouse from the Cooroy RSL and the good news for bowlers is that the greens will remain.

Listra is a local family owned company that has run national businesses from Cooroy for the past twenty years and previous to that ten years in Noosa. The directors are Ron and Travis McCarthy.

“It is our full intention to offer the rinks to the new Bowls Club allowing them to operate independently under a generous lease back arrangement,” said Ron McCarthy.

Listra has had negotiations with the Cooroy Bowls Club over the past ten years, at one stage running the club’s restaurant.

“The Bowls club has suffered a disruptive decade, however we are confident that the new club will now enter a stable growth period,” said Mr McCarthy. “They certainly will have our full support.”

The Cooroy Bowls Club will be meeting on April 12th, with the intention of forming a new independent club.

“Once this is accomplished we will be able to establish a secure and affordable lease on a business basis,” said Mr McCarthy.

“I am sure that with the continued support of local business, as well as the broader community, we will see a long and viable continuation of the sport.

“It has always been the intention of Listra to turn the clubhouse into a Sports Club. This will be ancillary to existing clubs and provide a base for those that are either transient or homeless. Our activities will be structured in a way that will provide opportunities for sport clubs to raise funds. There will a definite emphasis on junior sport.”

Renovations and refurbishment will undertaken

by Travis McCarthy’s company ‘T-MAC Projects’ and it is anticipated that this will be completed by the end of June with the new club up and running at the beginning of the new financial year.

“The Sports Club will continue to offer dining in the form of an affordable club bistro and add a unique form of alfresco dining not yet seen in the Shire,” said Mr McCarthy.

“The function room and bar will continue to operate on regulated hours.

“After attending Christmas in Cooroy, Travis and I perceived a new dynamic in the town. Young families.

“We assume this is a result of closer settlement of the surrounding areas. It is our belief that this new facility will offer a centre for the elderly and the young; in fact the entire broader community.”

The level playing field, the bottom line, the win-win situation, The rapid assurance if things go wrong, there’ll be an investigation.

So I’ve decided to give the news away, and enjoy the town instead, And listen to the gossip, and what the townsfolk said.

THE Cooroy Scribe Tribe meets at the Cooroy Library every second and fourth Monday of each month at 2pm for two hours. We are currently seeking new members to join us as we enjoy creating, sharing and growing.

Our focus is definitely on fun and we have a lot of laughs and wow moments together as we listen to a wonderful myriad of stories.

We began this year with an extra hour devoted to critiquing each other’s stories if any of our members wish to stay but this is definitely not mandatory.

THE Noosa District Orchid & Foliage is hosting a show in conjunction with Cooroy Fusion on the 9th & 10th May. These shows are a great way to see many exotic flowers in one place. There will also be experienced growers on hand to help. The show is well worth the $2 entry fee.

Plants of all sizes will be for sale, and experienced growers will be on hand for some guidance on caring for your orchid.

The good news is, the Sunshine Coast is perfect for growing orchids but for the benefit of anyone who would like some growing tips from an expert, NDOFS president John Green will give a talk on “How to Grow Orchids” in the Community Access Room, Cooroy Library on Saturday May 10 at 10am.

To learn more about orchids you are welcome to attend the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society meetings at Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each month starting at 1pm. Everyone is welcome and bring any troublesome plants with as there is a plant clinic each meeting.

news Council seeks ansers on Kin Kin Quarry limits

NOOSA Council has moved to seek information that may provide reassurance to the Kin Kin community, amidst concerns over what some residents say are plans for a ‘mega quarry’ on their doorstep.

Thursday night’s council meeting voted to seek legal advice on whether an annual capacity limit can be determined for the quarry.

Councillor Tony Wellington said the council owes it to the Kin Kin community to resolve just how intensively the quarry may operate.

It seems that the quarry’s history might provide a guide to its limitations. “In 2003, Noosa Council passed a motion that extended the life of the quarry,” Cr Wellington said.

“That motion included the clear intent that there was to be no increase in the ex-

isting scale and intensity of the quarry.

Any such increase would have to be the subject of an additional development application.

“At the time of Council’s decision, the operators, Readymix, had estimated their capacity as being 140,000 tonnes per year.

Arguably, council’s aim was to not exceed that capacity.”

In 2010 the Kin Kin Community Group took court action contesting the quarry approval. By this time Neilsen’s Quality Gravels had taken over as quarry operator.

“There are aspects of the legal judgement that raise questions about the limits of the quarry’s operations,” Cr. Wellington said.

“The court judgement appears to suggest that the Readymix Plans under consideration in 2003 may set the capacity for

At its monthly ordinary meeting, the council signed off on a new structure that will abolish some unneeded administrative and management positions, while adding three new front-line workers in customer service and parks.

The changes will save $680-thousand dollars a year, but will not involve redundancies.

how every council dollar spent helps to serve customers and the community.

“We’ll end up with the equivalent of around 348 full time positions” he said. ”If you stack us up against comparable councils around Queensland, you’ll find we’re very much at the lean end of staffing. That’s where we need to be ... lean, but not mean.”

Mayor Playford says there’s a lot of work still ahead for the new council, but after just three months he’s pleased that the organisation is getting onto a sound financial footing while delivering the extra services, like bulk rubbish collection, that the voters of Noosa have demanded.

A separate motion passed at Thursday’s Ordinary Meeting resolved not to proceed with any further efforts to upgrade Sheppersons Lane, a gravel road leading to the Kin Kin Quarry. The motion noted that maintenance of the road is the responsibility of the quarry operator.

New Highway gets a blasting THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) would like to advise that low-impact blasting will be required during major earthworks for the Bruce Highway (Cooroy to Curra) Upgrade, Section A project.

Three locations have been identified for possible blasting on the western side of the existing Bruce Highway between Black Mountain Range Road and Gardners Road. Blasting work will be under-

taken intermittently until late 2014, weather permitting. Blasts will occur between 9am and 3pm, from Monday to Friday, with multiple blasts to be carried out during some weeks.

The project team will use methods aimed at minimising noise and vibrational impacts, which include creating implosions rather than outward explosions.

Safe 200m exclusion zones will be in place at each site to ensure that no members of the gen-

eral public approach the blast sites. The project team will contact residents who are within the exclusion zones to discuss blasting and to answer any questions they may have.

The following procedure will be implemented to safely manage the blasting process and provide nearby residents with advance warning of a blast.

• The blast controller will secure the area and make sure everyone is a safe distance from the

work. Blast controllers will also be stationed in the area during the blasts.

• The shot firer will sound a siren to indicate that a blast is imminent.

You may hear this siren when blasting starts.

• The shot firer will apply a countdown sequence and fire the shot.

The blast will take approximately 10 seconds.

As an added safety precaution, TMR will temporarily close the existing Bruce Highway intermittently between

Black Mountain Range Road and just south of Gardners Road for the blasting. Sections of Gardners Road, Uhlmanns Road and Pomona Connection Road may also be temporarily closed. Motorists may experience delays of up to five minutes during the blasts. Please follow the instructions of traffic controllers, police and road signs.

It’s used to identify a group of investors that typically have less than $100,000 of investable assets, not including their home or superannuation, who want to increase their wealth and who may have little experience with or knowledge about the share market.

One of the important things to remember is that investing in the share market should be seen as a long term strategy. However, one of the problems with everyday investors is that they often buy when the market is at its peak. This is usually after the media has started reporting on the various “booms” and the incredible gains to be made. Unfortunately many Mum and Dad investors also sell at the lowest points in the market after hanging on for a white knuckle ride through the plunge and realising how much money they have lost before deciding the share market is too risky and they want out.

As infamous Australian stockbroker Rene Rivkin used to say, the trick to successful share investing is to turn this on its head by buying in gloom and selling in boom. Try to buy when ever your instinct, the media and all of your friends are telling you not to.

Another good rule of thumb is diversification of your portfolio with many advisors recommending a minimum of six stocks, generally including banks, property and media. A 2013 survey found that around 20% of investors only hold one share in their portfolio with 22% having only two or three shares.

There are many things to consider before you

begin investing in the share market. These include your acceptable level of risk; your desired return: and whether you are planning on borrowing to invest. Try to talk to as many informed people as possible.

Making a smooth transition WITH a Transition to Retirement strategy you can continue working and access your super.

Retirement used to represent a sharp break with the past—one day you were working full time, the next you were sitting at home with the rest of your life ahead of you. These days, the transition doesn’t have to be quite so abrupt.

Many Australians are keeping themselves active and engaged by continuing for longer in the workforce on a part-time or contractual basis. In fact, more than two in five Australians who work full time and intend to retire are looking to reduce their hours first. [1] The good news is that in the few years prior to retirement you can start to draw an income from your retirement nest egg while you continue working and contributing towards your super.

Access your super the smart tax way If you’ve reached your super ‘preservation age’ (currently 55 but rising to 60), you can take some of your existing super as an income stream to help make your transition to retirement a smooth one.

This is called a transition to retirement (TtR) strategy. And it can be very tax effective. · You can continue to work and contribute towards your super using tax-effective salary sacrifice contributions. · You can top up your income with a tax-effective income stream from your retirement account (between 4% and up to 10% of the account balance can be drawn each year). · And there’s even a way to ‘refresh’ your TtR strategy every year for potentially even more tax benefits.

There are two main ways you can use a TtR strategy.

1. Less work, potentially the same aftertax income The first option is a TtR strategy that may allow you to cut down your working hours while maintaining the same level of aftertax income.

Let’s say you’re over 55, you earn $75,000 a year before tax and you have $250,000 in your super. You want to cut back your working hours, which will reduce your before tax salary from $75,000 to $53,500.

As shown in the table below, by using a TtR strategy, you can maintain your aftertax income, despite reducing your work hours.

But it does come at a price—your super balance may dwindle over time as you draw down your pension payments.

2. Same hours, more super The other option is a TtR strategy that may allow you to maintain your work hours, but increase your salary sacrifice contributions to super, and supplement your income with a TtR pension so that there is no reduction in your after-tax income.

So let’s say you’re over 60, earning $60,000 a year before tax and you have $200,000 in your super, and you choose to use the full amount to start a pension.

As shown in the table below, together with your pension income, you can salary sacrifice $24,380 a year and still receive the same amount of after-tax income in your pocket.

What’s more at the end of the year, you’ve boosted your super by $953. If you do this for ten years, that’s potentially an extra $9,530 for your retirement, simply by managing your money in a different way.

Finding the right balance A TtR strategy can be an effective way to boost your super savings, but it also has superannuation, taxation and social security implications.

Allan Mahoney will attend the official opening on completion and has given some history of the site: “My grandfather, Simon Mahoney (pronounced Mar-nee), came to Australia in 1863 with his parents and younger brother when about seven. The family first settled in Brisbane and then went to Gympie once gold was discov-

ered. Simon left school at the age of twelve and was one of the first two whim boys on the Gympie Gold Field (a whim boy operated the mining gear to raise and lower the men and equipment).

He then worked his way up to become mines manager of Hall’s leasehold, new North Harkings at Mt Pleasant and South Gympie Gold Mines. On leaving Gympie, he purchased the Calliungal Hotel in Mt Morgan in 1906 and in 1911 purchased the Imperial Hotel in Longreach. He left Longreach in 1919 to retire to Cooroy and had the house in Garnet Street built around that time. He called it “Clareville” after his birthplace, County Clare, Ireland.

IN May 1942, a serious incident took place, which was kept under cover by the authorities, and not revealed until seventy years later.

It occurred in Townsville, which had become a major military city, crowded with troops, among them many coloured American men.

There was great friction between the white Americans, and the coloured, and it all boiled over on the night of May 22, when some 600 coloured American soldiers mutinied, and tried to kill their white officers. It began with a claim that a coloured soldier had been killed by a white officer, and the mutineers, armed, marched on the town, which they had been forbidden to enter, unless on duty and accompanied by a white officer. It had developed into a very serious, and danger-filled affair. Shots were fired, but no casualties were reported although casualties could have taken place, because nothing at all was reported.

An Australian infantry brigade was based in Townsville at the time, as was my own Unit, which had arrived before our impending movement to New Guinea. At midnight on the night of May 22nd, a unit of the brigade was called out, and it blocked the mutineers access to the city, with orders to shoot if necessary. At least one Bren Carrier was included, but no shots were fired, and the Australians were withdrawn at about 3 am.

The mutineers were rounded up, and shipped off to New Guinea as soon as possible. It is believed that some 100 of them escaped the net, but were fairly quickly re-captured.

It was later revealed the US President-to-be Lyndon B. Johnson, then a Senator, had been sent to Australia to observe, and report on, the Australian War situation. He produced a highly critical report, for the President, on his return to America, which included the mutiny in Townsville by the coloured troops, of which the President and other US based authorities were unaware. He was alarmlingly critical of Australia’s war effort, and observed that Australia had no real ideology, and our only national heroes were Don Bradman, and Ned Kelly - a cricketer and a criminal. He also claimed that Australia’s war effort was pathetic, and there was intense and visible jealousy among our brass hats/ I am not going to get into discussions about LBJ’s report. I have my own views, fostered by my own observations and experiences during the War. But I can say that the mutiny did occur, as I was in Townsville at the time. I can also say that intense friction between the white and the black American servicemen did exist, and some other “oldies” may recall the problems which arose in Brisbane, with coloured troops confined to the South Brisbane area of the city Fortunately, the world has moved on, and the coloured versus white situation in America has improved enormously. Who would have envisaged in that day and age that America would one day have a black President?

I WAS thinking the other day how Cooroy has changed over the years since I was first transferred here in 1997.

By far the biggest change as far as policing goes is that of the ever decreasing fatality rate in the Cooroy Division. When I first arrived in Cooroy the Bruce highway was a narrow two laned section of road all the way from Yandina through Eumundi, Cooroy and Black Mountain. Those were the days of the two cross intersections outside Eumundi township crossing over the Bruce Highway and leading out to Kenilworth and North Arm. Those were the days that the side of the road through Black Mountain resembled a cemetery with all of the white crosses erected for deceased loved ones.

Once a month we’d receive the call to head to the highway and the question wasn’t so much, “Is it a Fatal” rather than, “How many dead this time.” Local police become great mates with the local

Firies, Ambos and SES workers due to the fact that men most often bond the closest in times of adversity. We even started having local Emergency Services Christmas parties when we suddenly realised that the only time we ever caught up was over a couple of dead bodies.

In the 10 or so years that the Highway did its worst and claimed all those lives the highway has seen many upgrades and design changes which has saved many lives. The latest upgrades see hundreds of millions of dollars being spent to make a straight double laned road from Cooroy and almost through to Gympie.

Together with the road improvements we have seen a strengthening and consolidation of police resolve to enforce the traffic rules and to use intelligence based policing methods to identify the times and places that serious and fatal traffic accidents are most likely to occur. Increased penalties for hoons and repeat traffic

offenders and vehicle impoundment legislation have all added to the arsenal to combat the carnage on our roads.

The instance of fatal traffic accidents on the highway have dwindled to the point that we now only get 1 or maybe 2 a year which of course is still 1 or 2 too many but by my reckoning a good 30 odd peoples lives that have been saved in the past 5 years.

When lined up side by side 30 people are a lot of people and who knows ... one of those lives saved could have been your daughter’s or son’s or mom and dad.

Generally speaking the roads have not been to blame for the accidents occurring but rather have been a contributing factor to a driver making a poor or sometimes downright dangerous decision which has lead to the death of innocent people.

I have no doubt that even with the road being widened and straightened with barriers in between oncoming traffic people will

still find ways to kill themselves.

Please be aware that traffic rules are there to be obeyed and it’s not good enough anymore to say you didn’t see the sign or you were only over by 10km. Driving a car is about having the right attitude and not just obeying the rules that you think are worth obeying but obeying all the rules.

One thing that definitely hasn’t changed is the willingness of the Cooroy Community to assist police with the solving of crime and de-

tection of offenders.

Every day we have people coming into the station or phoning us up offering information that greatly assists in the detection of offenders. It never ceases to amaze me that on many occasions and within hours of an offence occurring police will receive information from the public which leads to the apprehension of an offender.

Cooroy continues to lead the District in the solving of crime and I am in no doubt this is due to the close interaction of the community with local police.

Wellington’s Way MP Peter Wellington GOOD News for Community Groups: At last some good news to report, the Government has responded to my lobbying and agreed that some ‘not for profit community groups’ will be exempt from paying the Emergency Management and Fire Rescue Levy.

Community organisations including churches, showgrounds, libraries and community halls with an E-class category will be exempt from paying the levy. In order to find out if your organisation is eligible for an exemption of the levy you must contact your local Council office.

Cooroy students help farmers: Last week in Parliament I congratulated the students at Cooroy State School for their fundraising efforts on behalf of our drought-affected Queensland farmers.

I told the Parliament that the school had raised more than $600 to help our farmers by dressing as a farmer for the day. The school was a sea of colour as students changed from their traditional green and gold uniforms to denim and flannelette in an assortment of colours.

The idea was the brainchild of the school’s student council after they heard the struggle farmers were having combating the drought.

Newly appointed School Principal Des Deighton, told me about the students success when I attended the school’s student leadership induction recently.

Des who was the former principal of Yandina State School is keen for his new school to have a community focus.

Congratulations to the new school leaders on their election to office and also to the school students for their successful fundraising efforts.

LOVERS of realistic art will be happy to know that Lew Brennan is having a ‘pop up’ exhibition at Artspace101 over the Easter period. Living his life in Cooran raising a family, cattle and quarter horses Lew’s art is highly reflective of his time in this beautiful part of the world.

The long awaited exhibition has generated significant interest already and Lew puts it down to not only a growing base of people interested in his art, but a renewed celebration of realism worldwide.

“I’m sure part of the resurgence of interest in realism is due to technology. Today the whole world is watching, not just the regular and casual gallery visitors” said Lew. “New media is certainly new for me but it clearly has opened up my work to a massive new audience and I have been overwhelmed by the level of interest and support.”

Although he says he misses the creative opportunities that come with local government he now sees today as the best time of his life.

“Life is truly amazing, I have a wonderful family, I’m in the studio full time and I’m turning out my best work by far.” The ‘pop up’ exhibition focuses on his love of the horse, an animal he spent many years with as a young breeder and trainer, but also work depicting the contemporary small town life that he loves so dearly.

Pottery exhibition at Butter Factory NOOSA Council’s Butter Factory Arts Centre welcomes a stunning collection of ceramic works reflecting a shared love of travel through ancient lands in the Journey through Time and Place exhibition, open to the public from until 10 May 2014.

This diverse exhibition draws together the individual styles and techniques of the Cooroy Potters, comprising Pam Walsh, Monika Juengling, Julie Wall and Glen Buckley, who meet regularly at the Butter Factory Arts Centre’s Pottery Studio. Here, their shared love of working with clay and travel has inspired this stunning collection of wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic works.

Gubbi Gubbi Gun’doo Yang’ga’man is concurrently showing at the Butter Factory Arts Centre. It is an exhibition documenting the research and reconstruction project to relearn the skills of traditional bark canoe making with the local Gubbi Gubbi people. The display documents these activities and promotes the project’s national significance and value for the community. This project has been developed with the support of the artists and their community and funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s Cultural Heritage Levy. The artists were Lyndon Davis, Brent Miller, Nathan Morgan and Kerry Jones. Filming and photography by James Muller of Earth Base Productions and research undertaken by Ray Kerkhove.

Easter holiday fun at Eumundi Markets HOP along to Eumundi Markets in the upcoming Easter school holidays for an Easter Treasure Hunt, art and craft, pony rides, and more! Market Manager Peter Homan says a highlight for many children visiting the markets is the annual Easter Treasure Hunt, taking place on Easter Saturday April 19. “Treasure hunters are given clues and must find the answers as they make their way through our colourful markets,” he says. “They can take their time and enjoy the market fun as they go along, and when they complete their journey, each young treasure hunter will receive a delicious chocolate Easter bilby made by Eumundi’s own Lief Chocolates”.

The treasure hunt is open to the first 300 kids to register at the market office from 8am on the day.

COOROY RAG Local girls ‘Shave for a Cure’

LOCAL mother and daughter team, Heather and Joanna Ford recently ‘Shaved for a Cure’. Joanna announced to her mother that she was going to do the shave and that was it. Out went the fundraising posters and collection tins. Heather helped her daughter with the fundraising, and wanted this to be a very special event.

They recently lost a family member to leukaemia, and took this opportunity to do something special in his memory.

Joanna had just had her head shaved when her mum sat down in the chair for her head shave.

Joanna was delighted when she found out that she would be sharing the experience with her mum. Heather had told a select few that she intended joining her daughter in the event, as she wanted to surprise Joanna. The girls want to thanks all their friends and family who donated money for this event.

Together, they raised over their target of $500.

WHEN Suzanne Baker and Pam Robinson bought their beautiful house on forty acres in Eerwah Vale they weren’t entirely sure what they were going to do with all the space.

But that’s when they discovered miniature cattle or, to be more precise, Miniature White Galloway cattle. These amazing animals (imagine gentle-natured, long-haired cattle about the size of Shetland Ponies) have transformed their lives in so many different ways. Initially they decided to buy just a couple of steers but, six years later, their herd has grown to forty and, what started as a hobby, has clearly grown into a passion.

COOROY Scout Group awards high achieving youth: Cooroy Scout Group had the honour of presenting the very prestigious “Queen’s Scout” Award recently to James Hardcastle. James has been a member of Cooroy Scout Group for approximately 8 years, starting as a member of the Scout Troop where he earned his Scout Medallion, and then Venturer Scout Unit where he went on to achieve further to finally earn his Queen’s Scout status.

This Award is the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement and demonstrates that James has an exceptional standard of achievement and development in the areas of Leadership, Outdoor Skills, Personal growth and Community Involvement and Service. James’s achievements have been impressive and we are all very proud of him. James is not only a Queen’s Scout but he is also the Junior Commodore of Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. Well done James!

award. This unique garden was developed with the aim of making a creative and stimulating space for students to not only learn about the environment but also to reflect on the social and emotional lessons provided in class (eg. through the mental health program “Kids Matter”).

According to Shaylene, “The Let Go

logs help students let go of emotions that may stop them from moving forward. The uneven climbing logs give the idea that life has ups and downs and that it is okay like that. The Cross Over bridge shows students that they can make different choices. The Sit and Think seat is a place to reflect and share ideas, while the Whispering Wishing Well is a focus for students to set goals and engage in positive thinking.”

The Sensory Garden features a diverse range of flora including hundreds of natives, exotics, vegetables and herbs. To stimulate the senses there are “Fragrant”, “Edible”, “Tropical” and “Touch and Texture” sections within the garden. To encourage student’s creativity and imagination, three areas representing “Water”, “Land” and “Air” are incorporated into the garden, including a boat, logs designed as a bus and a large concrete dragon upon which the children can sit on and ’fly’.

Classes at Pomona also use the Sensory Garden for other lessons, including maths and science, and the outdoor chessboard within the garden provides opportunities for cognitive challenges in an engaging natural setting. Students can also be part of the maintenance of the garden through the lunch time Garden Club, under the supervision of Shaylene.

Wayne and Shaylene’s passion for gardening and the education of children has driven this project from its inception in 2011 to its completion last year. Supported by many of the school’s students, parents, other staff members and community volunteers, Wayne and Shaylene spent countless hours (often in their own time) working on this garden and sourcing discounted / free materials to recycle into something special that the whole school community can treasure for many years to come.

Old hall given new lease of life

A NEW state-of-the-art kitchen for Cooran Hall is the last major refurbishment to be completed in a fouryear long project to repair and modernise one of Sunshine Coast’s older public buildings.

An energetic and forward-thinking committee has been securing government and gambling grants and funding from Sunshine Coast Regional Council for the improvements, which includes new stage curtains and timber flooring, the interior repainted, floors sanded and resealed, and landscaping.

The hall also has new insulation and solar power, and had disabled toilets installed and a concrete pathway to make the hall more accessible.

Committee president Kim Bryant said it took an effective and dedicated committee to get the job done, but when it came to work on the kitchen, it was hall treasurer Irene Gibbs and her husband Rob whose hard work and creativity really shone through.

After receiving quotes in excess of $100,000 to construct a new commercial standard kitchen, Rob and Irene took on the job of project managing and reduced the cost to $67,000.

They used local tradesmen and had nothing but praise for electrician Bernie Waite, Safari Plumbing, and Sprott’s Steel.

“They really were great – the best I’ve worked with,” Rob said. He and Irene also thanked Sunshine Coast Regional Council for “coming to the party”.

“Council were good to us,” Irene added. “They sorted out any issues and Cr Tony Wellington was great. It

Long-time local and hall committee secretary, George Hillier, said the completion of the kitchen had come around a decade after the original plans were drawn up.

“We’ve been aiming to do it for a long time,” he said. “The new kitchen really helps broaden the halls ability to host functions”.

The kitchen includes two electric turbo fan ovens, a six-top gas burner, stainless steel benches and walls, a Washtech dishwasher, microwave, drinks fridge, a beautiful timber servery and a full dinner service crockery set to serve 100 people.

“All these improvements and new additions have given the hall a new burst of energy,” Kim said.

“Our aim is to preserve the heritage of this wonderful old building alongside improving and upgrading its facilities, all with a view to helping to keep our community socially and creatively connected.”

The venue is used regularly for touring concerts, open-mic nights, amateur theatre, art exhibitions community meetings and now so much more. Kim said the venue was perfect for wedding receptions and other major functions, with its oldworld charm and excellent new kitchen facilities.

The kitchen was completed with funding from Jupiters Casino and Gambling Community Benefit Funds.

Kin Kin’s flashing school zone signs switched on NEW flashing school zone lights are now installed at Kin Kin State School as part of the Newman Government’s election commitment.

Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said the flashing lights will assist to warn motorists to slow down in school zones.

Mr Gibson said children are by nature unpredictable, and may not be concentrating when they approach the streets or roads adjacent to the school.

The Newman Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing light signs at over 300 school zones.

During 1 January to 30 September 2013, there were 22,365 speeding infringements issued in school zones. This is 24 per cent greater than the same period for 2012. Of the 22,365 speeding infringements, 251 were issued to drivers travelling between 31 and 40 km/h above the speed limit and 21 were issued to drivers travelling more than 40 km/h above the speed limit.

How’s your posture

POSTURE means the position that you hold your body in. It can relate to resting or working positions and it is important that yours is correct so that your body can stay free of aches and pains.

Your muscular system is the key to keeping a good posture. The core muscles of your body (i.e. the muscles that work for long periods to keep your spine in its correct position) need to be working correctly for you to be able to withstand the pressures of maintaining one position for a period of time. Otherwise your body gradually starts to become damaged, the messages start flooding to your brain and you start to feel pain.

So here’s what to do. Start correcting yourself!

The more often you do it the better. Leave a note on the computer screen telling you to sit up! Get rid of that old couch and start sitting in something that supports your spine better. Regular stretches to reduce the tightness in overactive muscles is also very helpful. It is difficult to achieve good postural alignment sometimes if you are trying to pull against tight muscles. Your posture may have been that poor that you’ll need to see the Physiotherapists to get everything moving, feeling and working better again.

Bringing breast cancer support home LOCAL resident Tracey Combes was among a select group of breast cancer survivors from around Australia who gathered in Melbourne last week to participate in training to become a Community Liaison with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

The special three day training program prepares women like Tracey to volunteer in their local communities, raising awareness of breast cancer and how it affects women and families.

BCNA CEO and breast cancer survivor Maxine Morand highlighted the importance of the Community Liaison training and role: “We are delighted that this training will allow so many strong women to provide support and awareness in their local communities. These great women will act as community breast cancer champions and are available to share their

stories and let women and families affected by breast cancer know where they can find support”.

“Having confident, positive and well-informed women improves BCNA’s ability to provide support to those affected by breast cancer across rural and regional Australia.”

“This BCNA training has been made possible through a significant investment by the Federal Government who have acknowledged the needs of women in rural areas diagnosed with breast cancer,” added Maxine. The BCNA training provides a forum for women to share their stories, strengthen their networks and work towards better outcomes for women living with breast cancer. The program is designed to strengthen the ability of the women to use their own experiences to make a difference.

The strength of BCNA comes from more than 300 Member Groups and more than 90,000 individual members. With more than 15,000 Australians expected to be diagnosed

The program is based on medical research developed by researchers at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in response to the rising rates of chronic disease. One of our local sailors has just returned from assisting with the delivery of the beautiful yacht “Outsidege” to New Zealand for this 1380 nautical mile event. Outsidedge owned by Peter Gaddes, is a Young 11 designed and built in New Zealand. The trip across the Tasman was very well managed with every attention paid to the safety of the boat and crew. All crew did 3 hour watches, that is two crew at a time sail the boat for 3 hours and then you go off watch to eat, sleep etc before going back on deck again for another 3 hours and so on 24 hours per day. There were many highlights; including seeing some amazing sights like huge sunfish cruising by in the clear water and sailing as far south as the Roaring Forties to avoid bad weather.

“Something that I enjoyed in particular was the fast sailing at night with full sail under a sky full of stars and the silver highway made by the moonshine on the water. This is simply fantastic. The bright sunny days with whales, dolphins and albatross coming by to look at us was brilliant. Of course the weather wasn’t nice all the way though we did our best to avoid the worst bits and did at time have some unpleasant weather. It’s hard to describe how it feels to climb out of a wet bunk, put on damp wet weather gear and go on deck at 3 in the morning in the pouring rain to cheerfully relieve the ‘on watch’ crew” said Elaine To add to the excitement, a cyclone formed in the Coral Sea and then of course decided to head down over New Zealand. This was definitely something the crew of Outsidedge wanted to avoid so they opted to stay about 200 miles offshore for a few days to let Cyclone Luci go by. Outsidedge and crew arrived at the Tasman Bay Cruising Yacht Club in Nelson New Zealand 12 days after departing Newport in Brisbane to meet the friendliest, most welcoming people. There they were offered transport, accommodation and of course an invitation to go for sail the following day in their club racing.

Elaine says “My next big trip will be to deliver the yacht “Moonshine” to the Whitsundays in time for Hamilton Island Race Week and then do the week of racing. I am REALLY looking forward to that trip!”

Plane sailing COOROY teenagers this month placed a creditable 2nd in a sailing marathon known as the “Great Race” in the Laser 2 dinghy “Plane Sailing”. James Hardcastle, Leroy McAvoy and Connor Williams with Alec Milligan and Brendan Williams as support crew, took out 2nd in their Division and then 2nd overall.

Year after year, The Great Race attracts competitors from all over Australia, looking to test their stamina and willpower in this 70km endurance race from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. Concentration and strength are called on for varying angles and sailing conditions that are encountered as you plot your way through the myriad of channels. Competition is fierce all the way, and with tactics changing constantly. This year the wind was light in the early stages but picked up later in the event to provide for some very fast and exciting sailing including one capsize. The Great Race is one of the longest off-the-beach

sailing events of its kind to be staged in Australia. Starting just outside the Southport Yacht Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron on the Gold Coast, competitors make their way up towards Brisbane, and this year back to the Gold Coast again. The narrow and twisted waterways between the mainland and the islands are a real test the competitors’ tactics and boat handling skills.

Dolphins presentation night

Jed Hamblin – Top boy swimmer and Saskia Tomlins – Top girl swimmer 2013/2014 Swim season MEMBERS and their families of the Cooroy Swim Club came together for their annual presentation night. Loads of awards were presented by coach Adrienne Wilkins and the club committee.

An anxious wait was had to hear who won the top boy and top girl

swimmer for the 13/14 swimming season – this is calculated on the number of swims and personal best times achieved throughout the year at the weekly club night.

Cooroy Dolphins Swim Club operates from the Noosa District State High School Swimming Pool.

Boxers performing well at State Titles REPORTS coming in from Mark Evans (Impact Boxing) say Queensland is performing well in WA at the Australian Titles.

At the time of print, local boxers Payton Aird-Cardiff and Benny CameronHands were the new Australian champions. Congratulations guys!

sport Sunday social golfers raise funds for Katie Rose “Katie Rose Cottage” Charity Fundraising Day held by Cooroy Sunday Social Club.

On Sunday 30 March, 80 players supported this 4Person Ambrose event at Cooroy Golf Club. The players’ intention was to have a great time and especially support this well known facility which has over the years cared for and supported many families from Cooroy and surrounding areas.

The winners of the event were Phil Mellor and his team. Phil mentioned it was the first time he has won an event at Cooroy after many years of golf here. Well done. Other prizes and run down were handed out on the day.

The Raffle was drawn immediately after presentations. Results are as follows: First prize – Wheelbarrow full of goodies – Phil Mellor. Second prize [donated by Keith Bell] – Golf bag, balls, wine, glove – Lofty Brogden.

Special acknowledgement must go to our local social club for organizing this day. Thanks must also go to the many donors: namely Cooroy Golf Club, Belvedere Newsagent, Warren Truss MP, Darren Haines & Wimmers Soft Drinks as well as many individual golf members. The Social Club would also like to thank all members who assisted in ensuring the day was a success.

We were pleasantly surprised with the number of players who supported this day and wish to advise that a little more than $2,000 was raised on the day.

This money will assist Katie Rose Cottage to continue to provide the care and attention they are renowned for.

Many thanks again to all who contributed and played. We hope to hold another fundraiser next year.
