Lest we forget ANZAC Day is a time for the community to come together to remember and recognise the service and sacrifice of members of the Australian Defence Force. Originally a commemoration of the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, it

is now the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service past and present. A Dawn Service will be held at the Cooroy Cenotaph at 4.55am and this year the ANZAC March will be back in Maple Street. For the first time in 50 years Pomona will be holding a Memorial Service at the newly restored Pomona War Memorial at 5pm.

Tristan from Cooroy Hotel & Fusion Chair Jim with Tourism Noosa reuseable glasses Cooroy Fusion Festival is a wonderful day out for the whole family with something to do and see in every corner of the festival. After wandering the festival, a favourite spot to take a break is the Pickled Possum Bar. Cooroy Fusion Festival Chair, Jim Ennis, said the festival was pleased to welcome a joint sponsorship between Tourism Noosa and Cooroy Hotel for the sponsorship of this festival bar. “Tourism Noosa have been a long-term supporter of the festival and this year have also provided us with

use of their Noosa Food & Wine festival glasses in the Pickled Possum Bar. This will help us achieve our Zero Waste to Landfill target by eliminating our use of disposable cups,” explained Jim. “Combined with Cooroy Hotel’s sponsorship of the bar it means we can provide festival goes with the perfect spot to whet your whistle and catch some of the great local performers on the Bendigo Bank Main Stage.” Cooroy Fusion Festival includes a huge program of fun throughout town in-

Business as usual at Cooroy Supa IGA The owners and management of Cooroy Supa IGA would like to apologize to all customers after deciding to close the store early on Sunday afternoon (April 14) after an electrical fault caused a small fire in the cold room. The store was evacuated and fire crews were called. “We closed early so repairs could be carried out straight away and for

customer and staff safety,” said Group Manager Romeo Bordignon. “While the incident was minor we chose to close the store early to carry out the works in a safe manner, which went into the night. “The Owners and Management would like to thank all the Staff, Customers and Emergency services for their prompt response.”

Nicklin Community Awards Launch I know the value of our volunteers and want to celebrate their contribution to our local communities. This year, I’m launching the ‘Nicklin Community Awards’ which will be held during National Volunteer Week 20-26 May. I want you to nominate your local community hero! Having worked for 17 years as Sergeant in charge of the Police Youth Club, a community organisation, I know how invaluable volunteers are in our community. Coaches, canteen workers, grounds keepers, line markers, volunteer emergency workers and committee members all play a vital role in ensuring our community organisations are able to deliver the wonderful services that we rely on. The theme for National Volunteers Week this year is ‘Making a world of difference’. These are the people who coach your kids, who go out in the

worst storms or fires to assist, who give up their time to ensure others are cared for, they truly do make a world of difference in our community. I want to encourage organisations to nominate their volunteers for special recognition by visiting my website martyhunt. com.au and following the instructions or call the office on 54064100 for more information. Nominations close on Friday 10 th May. A special function will be held on Friday 24th May to announce the recipients of the Awards. Marty Hunt, MP

news Australian Body Art Festival was Out of this World

COOROY RAG

The official word on the street is that this year’s Australian Body Art Festival was in the stratosphere! Sixty competitors from around the nation embraced this year’s theme of ‘Other Words’ and put on a colourful show for close to 10,000 spectators in Cooroy over the weekend.

Some of Australia’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers created and paraded their masterpieces across five competition categories. Added to this super charged art show were some amazing entertainers including the likes of Aerial Dreaming on the silks, the

Mask Family street performers, Nova Star stilt walkers, Gubbi Gubbi Dance and a host of musical and dance entertainment as well. The theme drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged. “We are overjoyed with

the success of this year’s festival. It was the biggest and best yet with something happening at any time in every corner of the festival. “We are very proud of the wonderful community of volunteers and sponsors that support this event – we have created something truly unique and amazing

and we intend to nurture that in the future,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. “The artists were under pressure to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competitions, yet all had smiles on their faces and said they really enjoyed themselves,” Danielle said.

news Is it time to think about your nest egg? COOROY RAG

Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank I hope you all had a Happy Easter and you found time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Now that Easter has passed for another year, it’s time to think about a different type of egg the nest egg? We all strive to save our hard-earned money, which is getting more and more difficult with life’s ever-increasing expenses. There will be many key times in our lives that will make us think about our budget. Like starting a new job, getting married, buying a home, saving for a holiday and many more. Any time is a great time to think about your budget and planning to grow that little nest egg. Many of us struggle with budgets; they’re too hard, too complicated and too restrictive. Most banks will offer help with budgets, whether it’s an online calculator that you key in your information, or a budget planner you record your own details. These need to be used to help track your income and expenses. For your income, take into account all of your wages, pensions, family payments, interest, dividends etc. That is usually the easy part, knowing what we earn. To accurately work out your expenses, use your bank account statements, credit card statements or your bills to find out what you spend your money on. Remember those other bills that may come in less frequently, such as rates or car registrations. Think about having other bills as monthly deductions, rather than an annual bill, such as insurances. Once you have these completed, you can then work out your disposable income, this is the amount left over once you have allowed for all of your expenses to be paid. This can then be used to save regularly. Your bank can help you choose

an account that’s right for you to save your extra money. Depending upon your situation, this may be in an offset account if you have a home loan or in a special savings account that will pay more interest. Remember to allow yourself some flexibility within your budget and be realistic. It’s no use having a great budget on paper if in reality it can’t work. If you would like to discuss your budget or a savings account, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or via email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

The forgotten army Today I want to draw your attention to that part of the Australian Military Forces whose personnel have served tirelessly and with very little recognition during 120 years. I’m talking about ‘The Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps’ (RAANC). They have not always been known by that name; in 1898 The Army Nursing Service was formed on 13 th August in Sydney consisting of one Lady Superintendent and 24 nurses. 1899-1902 The South African War saw the first nurses serving with Australian troops. The governments of NSW and Victoria arranged for a detachment of nursing sisters to go with their troops to Africa, the expectation was that they would pay for their own expenses. The performances of these nurses was so good that the Federal Government seriously considered improving conditions for nurses serving with the military. 1902 The General Order was given to form an Army Nursing Service Reserve from those trained nurses who were qualified and willing to

serve with stationary Field Hospitals and Base Hospitals when required upon a National Emergency. The Australian Army Nursing Service, forming the basis of the RAANC, came into being on the first of July 1903 and this date is celebrated as the birthday of Army Nursing, and still today is remembered as their Corps Day. 1904-1914 Was a time when Army Nursing was established in Australia and when the AIF was formed at the beginning of WW1 nurses were recruited from the AANS reserve and from the civil nursing service to become an integral part of the AIF to serve overseas and operate under their command. Their uniform was modelled on the Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Service, grey serge frocks that swept the ground, and bonnets tied with bows under the chin. It was soon recognised that these were unsuitable and in the early part of the war were modernised. These sisters first left Australia in September 1914 to serve wherever Australian troops were serv-

ing, 2139 were called abroad while a further 423 served in Australia. 25 died overseas and 218 decorations were awarded including 23 foreign awards. The nursing service continued during the years of peace through the maintenance of a Reserve with a record of all trained nurses kept of those willing to serve in times of National Emergency. 1939-1945 At the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 the AANS was placed on an active footing and volunteers from the Reserves as well as civilian nurses were appointed to the AANS to form part of the second AIF raised to serve abroad. On January 9th.1940 the first contingent embarked as a component of the 6th.Australian Division for the Middle East. Further contingents followed at frequent intervals to expand medical facilities in that theatre. During the war members of the AANS served in England, Palestine Egypt, Libya, Greece, Crete, Syria-Eritrea, Ceylon, Malaya, New Guinea, New Britain and The Solomon’s. They also

Model of WWI Nurse served throughout Australia, at sea in hospital ships and sea ambulance transport, Borneo, the Philippines Morotai and Japan. At first members of the AANS did not hold military rank, but were entitled to the courtesies extended to an officer, but in 1943 the AANS became an incorporated part of the Australian Military Forces and following ranks were appointed; Matron-in-

Chief (Colonel), Matron (Major), Senior Sister (Captain), and Sister (Lieutenant). The AANS suffered great losses during the capture of Hospitals and Clearing Stations at the fall of Singapore. Of the 126 members who served in that theatre only 61 returned to home in1942. The ship in which others were evacuated was bombed and sunk, 12 of the sisters were believed drowned, and the remainder were taken POW. Of these 21 were shot by the Japanese in a massacre on Banka Island off Sumatra in early 1942. Eight Sisters died in captivity and 24 returned to Australia at the conclusion of hostilities. When the Japanese captured Rabaul 6 sisters were taken POW and released in 1945 when the Americans occupied Yokohama. One Sister was killed and one seriously wounded when the “Manunda” was sunk in Darwin Harbour and on the 14th.May 1943 of the twelve sisters on board the ‘Centaur” when it was torpedoed off the Queensland coast only one survived.

In total during the WW11 seventy one members of the AANS lost their lives,53 were battle casualties ,and eighteen die of accident or illness. The strength of the Service was 3,477, and a total of 137 decorations were awarded including 2 George Medals. 1948 In November of that year Royal was granted to the Nursing Service in recognition of service given during two World Wars and the service became known as Royal Australian Army Nursing Service. 1949-2001 During this period evolvement of the Nursing Service took place including the recognition of Corps status in 1951 when the service became known as Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC),1952 introduction of a Corps badge and in 1953 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth11 graciously accepted the appointment of Colonel-in-Chief. The RAANC has gone on to serve in many conflict areas including Vietnam where an Australian Field Hospital with a sophisticated triage system was developed involving

the reception, assessment, resuscitation and surgery of multiple casualties. 1972 The first male Nursing Officer was appointed to the Corps. Many other changes took place to bring the Corps up to date and then in 1990 four Nursing Officers (one male and three female) were sent as part of Australia’s commitment to the United Nations force to the Gulf War. The nurses served on the United States Hospital Ship COMFORT for three months. 1992-2001 United Nations Deployments took place and Nursing Officers have participated in all deployments undertaken by the Force including Somalia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bougainville and East Timor. Latter deployments have included Nursing Officers of the RAN and RAAF. In 2019 we want to recognise and congratulate the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps for many years of faithful service. Letter to the editor I had the misfortune to come across a dead koala on the walking track between the Lake MacDonald Dam and Old Tewantin Road (Tewantin Forest Reserve 3) last Saturday morning. This was particularly sad, given how rare koalas are in the area. There were no obvious injuries, but the thick fur can mask all sorts of wounds. A very kind volunteer from Koala Crusaders came to collect the body to take to Australia Zoo for an autopsy. The report found that the otherwise healthy 7 year old

male had been attacked by a domestic dog. Can I please remind dog walkers that dogs must be on leads when walking through the Forest? I run daily in the forest and a large number of dogs are usually off the leads and this could also cause serious problems for other local native wildlife. Koalas are notoriously difficult to spot in dense woodland, so it is perhaps not surprising that many people are unaware of their presence. Philip Harvey

COOROY RAG

A craftsman at work “One day when I retire I’ll sort out these photos,” says 81-year-old Campbell Burdon with a wink and a smile. The photos he’s referring to (a whole drawer full) provide a fascinating historic record of the two decades Campbell spent working as a construction manager in the film industry. Many of the films he worked on are Australian classics such as The Man from Snowy River (1 & 2), Ned Kelly (starring John Jarratt), Moby Dick (starring Patrick Stewart), Anzacs (the TV mini-series starring Paul Hogan), Robinson Crusoe (Pierce Brosnan), Noah’s Ark (Jon Voight), The Echo of Thunder (Judy Davis) and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. On these films (and others), Campbell and his team were responsible for building all the sets and, as shown in the photos, some of them involved some truly mammoth construction projects. For example, on Noah’s Ark they had to build the ark! On Moby Dick, they had to build Captain Ahab’s ship, the Pequod. We are talking about a full-size wooden ship!

‘‘We built the Pequod over a metal frame housing ballast tanks,” Campbell explains. “To make it rock they filled the tanks with compressed air.” On another set (for a film set in Adelaide called Disappearance), they had to build the entire main street of a town. Amongst the beautifully crafted buildings is the aptly named “Burdon’s Lumber Yard” – a nod of thanks from the producer for all Campbell’s quality work. Walking around Campbell’s home in Cooroy is like being in a museum of movie memorabilia. “Crocodile Dundee’s hat,” he says pointing casually to a hat hanging on his office wall – the very one worn by Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. His office also boasts a beautiful desk which belonged to Captain Ahab on Moby Dick, as well as plenty more items of interest. It was his work on Moby Dick that piqued Campbell’s interest in ships – an interest that continued to grow and would eventually lead him down a new path in his carpentry ca-

reer. Over the last 4 years or so, Campbell has started to build model sail ships. The ships are works of art – carved out of solid wood (mostly camphor laurel from trees felled by his neighbour), with even the sails made from beautifully sanded and varnished wood. The attention to detail is outstanding – lifeboats, rigging and all. To date, Campbell has made at least 25 of these wonderful ships – some given as presents to friends and family, but many still on display in his home. When asked if he’s ever considered selling his ships, Campbell explains that the main reason he has never tried is because they are not that easy to transport (heavy, with fragile masts and sails). He would be happy to sell them as long as the buyers come and collect them! Whether he sells his ships or not is of no real concern to Campbell. He makes the ships because it is something he loves to do. This is more than just a pastime – it is a passion. “When I start one, I can’t stop working on it!” he says. Celebrating 150 years of marriage

welcomes Dr TTom om Phillips

Three Cooroy couples who share their wedding anniversary in April celebrated recently with dinner at Saw & Mill Restaurant and reminisced over their wedding photos. Good friends for many years (L-R) Barry & Eleanor Gilmour who have been married for 52 years, Les & Tory Holman 49 years and Robin & Clarissa Passman also 49 years, thought this was an occasion worth celebrating.

We will remember him ANZAC Day 2019 marks the 1st anniversary of the passing of our very dear friend Jim Dunstan (MBE). Jim was the Vice President of the Cooroy Rag Committee for many years prior to his passing and all our readers will remember his poems which always had a swipe at our politicians of the day. On this day, and always, we remember him.

Dr Phillips is a UK-trained GP who moved to the sunshine coast 2 years ago. He enjoys all aspects of family medicine with particular interest in the care of the elderly, chronic disease, medical education and all aspects of mental health. He aims to give patients the best possible understanding of their health conditions and involve patients as much as possible in decisions made about their treatment. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids exploring the beaches and hinterland of the Sunshine Coast.

POMONA pomona AG SUPPLIES Learn about soil health and pasture die back

COOROY RAG Pasture die back is becoming a major concern throughout Queensland. The causes and cures are not clearly known at this stage regardless of millions of dollars being put into the problem. Work around pasture die back has been focussed on bringing the balance back into the soil. Properties surrounded by die back have been successfully protected through good soil management strategies. Learn more about soil health and the work being done in the area of pasture die back by attending a free information evening

being put on by Pomona Ag Supplies and Country Noosa on 15th May at the Futures Centre, Pavilion St, Pomona commencing 6.30pm. Terry Stokes and Danny Hood are part of Global Boss International – an R&D and farm advisory and education organisation and Boss Australia Pty Ltd who produce bio organic sustainable solutions for agriculture and horticulture. “Life on earth is ultimately dependent upon soil for its survival. Without the water, nutrients and physical support provided by soil and its biota, most plants would

not exist nor the animals that depend on them, including humans,” said Mr Stokes. “Soil is therefore an essential and precious part of life. “Healthy and resilient production landscapes are fundamental to the provision of sustainable ecosystems, Food and fibre production and prosperous rural and regional communities are so very important. “Most farmers we meet complain about the price they receive for their product and how it affects the profitability of their farming operations.

“If you cannot control the price you receive, which most of us cannot, then the only control you have is to increase production, reduce your overhead costs and increase the gross margin of everything you produce. “Sometimes we can’t literally see the chaff from the hay because we are not really clear on what our primary objective is. For example in the beef and dairy industry, you are essentially a grass/pasture farmer and your product and profitability is based on the quality of your paddocks. This is where the

importance of soil management and the role of soil biology become important. Soil biology is the link between nutrient availability, soil structure and efficient water utilisation. Biology has become the forgotten factor in this complex system. “When this soil ecosystem gets out of balance, loss of productivity, disease and pest infestation due to an inefficient immune system can quickly follow. We look forward to seeing you there on 15th May at the Futures Centre, Pavilion St, Pomona commencing 6.30pm.”

Out of the Blue exhbition in the Carriage Room The opening of the exhibition “Out of the Blue” by Beatrice Prost on Sunday 28th April 11 am in the Carriage Room of Pomona Railway Station Gallery will coincide with the third day of the Pomona Music Festival. Beatrice explores a couple of different meanings of what it is to get out of the blue. “I am obsessed with blues and continue to work with them in many different hues and mediums as well as on different supports with different techniques,” said Beatrice. “You are invited to dive with me into a series of new ink paintings to explore our marine world above and below the water surface. As I am just back from my artist in residence in the Blue Mountains, I have reserved an area of the show to share my experience and works with you. The resulting monochromatic blue hand carved

images will surprise you as I am still processing the power, beauty and magic I was submerged in this unique ecosystem of NSW.” The exhibition will be opened by Councillor Ingrid Jackson. A lot is happening this month at The Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Don’t miss Shadows, Smoke and Mirrors by Erica Harvey in the Banana Shed which opens on Saturday 27 April 12pm. The exhibition features an eclectic mix of wood carving, ceramics, mixed media, paintings and botanical art. Renowned Sunshine Coast artists also exhibiting with Erica include Jeffrey Fraser, Kurt Olsen and Phil and Valerie Willy.

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien is recognising the valuable work of volunteers, with almost $58,000 in grants for Wide Bay community groups. Grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 will be provided through a $20 million Volunteer Grants program to help 34 local community organisations with needs including buying equipment, paying fuel costs, and training volunteers. Some of the organisations in Wide Bay receiving grants today are; • Pomona Majestic Theatre - $4,876 for office equipment, transport and training costs. • Pomona Meals On Wheels $5,000 to assist volunteers with fuel costs. • Pomona and District Community House - $4,924 towards security cameras, office and gardening equipment and a refrigerator. • Cooran Hall - $5,000 for an energy-efficient LED stage lighting sys-

tem. “Wide Bay simply would not be the same without volunteers, who are the lifeblood of our communities and deliver important services, support and assistance,” Mr O’Brien said. “The energy, expertise and time our volunteers give represents what Australian communities are all about – offering a helping hand. “I am glad to be able to extend a helping hand in return with this funding from the Coalition Government so they can continue their work and build a stronger, safer community.” Mr O’Brien said volunteering also had a significant economic benefit to local communities. “The enormous value of volunteering is estimated at $290 billion per year. Australia’s 8.7 million volunteers and their organisations are the backbone of community life,” he said. “Australians rely on and support the good work of our volunteers.”

Digital eye strain “Digital Eye Strain” a growing epidemic caused by a digital life. Australians are leading world consumers of tablets, smartphones and computers, with 80% now owning and using a smartphone. Australians spend an average of 10 hours a day on internet connected devices. Collectively, we look at our smartphones more than 440 million times a day and 75% of us regularly engage in multi-tasking across multiple screens and Devices. This places a significant stress and fatigue on our eyes and posture, although many may not even be aware of it. Digital has become an inseparable part of everything we do. It has changed the way we work, learn, shop, socialise and relax; however, our eyes are not accustomed to the changes of the modern life and is causing a real strain on many of us. The proliferation of devices and growing usage rates creates the question; how will our vision adapt? In response, optometry@cooroy is launching a local campaign to create awareness in the community that Digital Eye Strain can be at the root of strained eyes, neck and shoulder pain as well as headaches – and that there are simple solutions to ease the strain. Digital Eye Strain is the physical eye discomfort felt by as many as 65% of individuals after two or more hours in front of a digital screen. Those using two or more devices simultaneously are at higher risk. Symptoms can include one or more of the following and the statics represent the frequency of reported symptoms 35% Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain; 32% Eye Strain; 28% Blurred Vision; 27% Headache; 27% Dry Eyes. Why does it occur? Our eyes are focusing more intensively, switching frequently between devices and adjusting to increasingly smaller, pixelated characters and bright, glowing screens. Digital devices are backlit and emit blue-violet light that can cause strain and discomfort and is linked to

disrupted sleeping patterns. A new reading zone in ultra near vision has evolved with the smartphone, placing even greater demands on our eyes. The normal blinking rate is often reduced from 17 or more blinks a minute to 12 to 15 blinks, reducing tear production, making your eyes feel dry and uncomfortable Our posture has changed as we lean toward our screens and slouch in our chairs, putting a strain on the neck and back. Optometrist, Jenny Currie says “We see the effects of this growing epidemic in our practice every day. What people may not realise is that they don’t have to live with the strain – we can prescribe the latest lens technologies that help to eliminate glare, filter out blue light, preventing vision fatigue. Eczema, also called dermatitis, is a group of conditions in which the skin is dry, itchy and scaly (note: not “hot,” which is usually more a sign of infection). In severe outbreaks the skin may become raw, red and bleeding. It affects up to 30% of pre-school aged children (5 years or under), and 1 in 6 school-aged children in Australia Eczema is thought to be triggered by different factors for different people. Some common examples include: Irritants (e.g. soaps and shampoos); Allergens (e.g. dust mites and pet hair) Microbes (e.g. some types of virus and bacteria); Hot/cold temperatures (and humidity changes that accompany these); Foods (e.g. dairy products and eggs); Stress; Hormones. Some of us live with this skin condition every day of our lives. The team at your LiveLife Pharmacy are here to help you and your family to look after your skin. Some lifestyle hints that we may recommend include: Avoid excessively hot water when showering and bathing; When towelling dry, pat rather than rub your skin; Apply cool, wet compresses – the affected area may even be covered with bandages and dressings to help protect the skin and prevent scratching; Avoid dry conditions (e.g. air conditioners and heaters); Avoid soap based products - use a soap-free cleanser or bath oil. Also try to avoid colours and fragrances in these cleansers.

Apply a thick moisturiser to the skin once or twice daily (best applied immediately after a shower/bath to retain the moisture in the skin). Consider increasing this frequency of application if living/working in a dry/air-conditions/heated environment. Wear clothes made of natural fibres where possible, so the skin may breathe Avoid any known triggers and irritants Wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent Avoid chlorinated pools if possible. Otherwise, ensure you shower then moisturise your skin well when you get out. When using a new cosmetic, try testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such as your forearm. That way if you experience a reaction, you can avoid using it again. Try to avoid scratching the skin, as this can lead to infection or scarring – keep your fingernails short! Choose mild/unscented laundry detergent. Remember to consult one of our pharmacists should your symptoms persist. We have many more products such as steroid creams and antihistamines, and even complementary therapies which may be beneficial for your skin. Don’t suffer unnecessarily with skin conditions. Speak to your LiveLife pharmacist today and start living!!!

Ongoing Dizziness Eden is also pleased to be offering a new Vestibular Rehabilitation Day Program in response to approximately one third of Australians aged over 50 who report ongoing dizziness. People with vestibular dysfunction experience dizziness, visual and balance disturbances, reduced mobility and anxiety resulting in loss of independence and social isolation. This new day program aims to address the immediate causes of long term dizziness whilst reducing the longer term consequences of living with dizziness including decreased activity participation, deconditioning and increased risk of falls. The program consists of specific exercises targeting head and eye movements, balance and re-

peated exposure to provocative movements to desensitize the patient to movement. Education is an important part of the program along with impact assessment on quality of life. Overall the program will improve function but in the case of unresolved dizziness, the program will assist to develop coping strategies to effectively manage the condition. Well known conditions such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, Meniere’s disease, stroke, head injuries and tumors would be appropriate for Eden’s Vestibular Rehabilitation Day Program. For more information please feel free to call Eden on 5472 6472.

Find your Fibre! We all need fibre. Whether you’re a fan of low carb, intermittent fasting or another style of eating, this unique nutrient does wonders for our health. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Fibre is also known as roughage. It’s the part of plant food that travels through our digestive tract without breaking down, absorbing water along the way. While that sounds good for keeping constipation at bay (and it is), fibre does a lot more than that. It also feeds the billions of tiny micro-organisms living and growing in our gut. These micro-organisms are collectively called the gut ‘microbiota’ or more simply known as ‘gut bugs’. These gut bugs also rely on certain types of fibre to maintain their health and function. Not all types of fibres are equal and some have special properties that enhance the health of our microbiota. For example, gut bugs convert one type of fibre called inulin into short-chain fatty acids (SCFA’s), which nourish colon cells and provide various other health benefits. Foods which contain inulin include; garlic, leek, onion, asparagus, tomato and dandelion greens. Other prebiotic foods that also provide this benefit include fennel, snow peas, cabbage, beetroot, cashews, soybeans and pomegranate. Gut bugs also benefit from polyphenols, which includes compounds like flavonoids, resveratrol and lignans. There are plenty of foods rich in polyphenols, with some of the more popular ones being: tea, coffee (fresh grind), chocolate (dark), strawberries, raspberries, plums, olive oil (virgin cold pressed), walnuts and almonds. Flaxseeds and chia seeds deserve a special mention as not only are they are a rich source of polyphenols, they also provide the essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid. Flaxseeds are best taken ground into a meal as the whole seed can pass straight through undigested. Chia seeds soak up liquid and form a jelly like consistency, so have become a popular ingredient in many versions of the ‘chia seed pudding’. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Before

Cosmetic Tattooist Janice Trainer explains how permanent makeup and restorative cosmetic tattoo techniques can bring permanent beauty to facial features. Defined eyebrows, coloured lip lines and longlasting eyeliner – these are no longer confined to high fashion runways. Janice Trainer from Beauty by Janice says cosmetic tattoo treatments can create hassle-free mornings for those whose lifestyles don’t allow the luxury of free time between work and kids, and for women who have undergone reconstruction surgery. “With a range of pigments to choose from, eyeliner tattooing provides permanent makeup that allows the wearer to sleep, swim and exercise without the smudge factor,” says

After

Janice. This combined with eyebrow tattooing, can restore vibrancy to the entire eye area and help those who have plucked too much, or have scars or gaps in their eyebrows. Similarly, lip tattooing can be ideal for women lacking a definite lip shape, have pale lips or just want to enhance the look of their pout.” Janice says clients should be aware that the colour may seem stronger at first but this will fade back to a more natural-looking colour. “Immediately after the treatment, the cosmetic tattoo will appear brighter in colour, however in most cases clients lose approximately 20 to 40 percent of intense colour throughout the healing process,” she explains. “Final results are usually apparent after around two

weeks.” Cosmetic Tattooing can also be used to enhance the areola of the breast. Women who have recently undergone reconstructive breast surgery often opt for this treatment. “Paramedical cosmetic tattooing can help restore a woman’s self-confidence, particularly for those who have undergone a mastectomy - it can really help them during their healing process,” says Janice. “Cosmetic Tattooing can also improve the appearance of vitiligo, a disease characterised by patches of skin discolouration where there is loss of natural skin pigmentation, by camouflaging the diseased spots. It can also recreate the look of hair alopecia sufferers, a health condition deriving from the immune system (white blood cells), which results in the arrest of the immune growth stage, including facial hair.” The technical aspect of Cosmetic treatments is key to creating optimal results so ensure your practitioner is highly skilled and experienced in the art of Cosmetic Tattooing. Janice says it is also important for the practitioner to have an

artistic eye to create a look that will best suit each individual client. Most Cosmetic Tattooing will last for up to 2 years before an enhancement will need to be done. “My job is to guide my clients through the options that will achieve what they’re specially looking for while also reflecting

their individuality.” Janice is a fully qualified Cosmetic and Paramedical Cosmetic Tattoo Technician and has been working in this area for over 20 years, she is also the Australian Cosmetic Tattoo Associations Instructor and has been instructing for over 10 years. For appointments call Janice on 0412 778 385.

How to heal our own trigger points A one-day workshop that focuses on the importance of our own emotional healing and how to respond to people who are facing difficult situations or not feeling well in life is being held at Life in Balance Ayurveda & Yoga in Cooroy on Saturday April 27 from 10am to 4pm. The art of being able to say something helpful when others are in pain has not been clearly taught to us and is not found easily within our cultural conditioning to avoid the discussion of feelings. Our culture seems to want us to feel less. The lament of “I don’t know what to say” is painful for us all. So, whether you are a practitioner or a loving friend or parent, family member, these are invaluable life skills to have. Plus, this information really changes your life!!!! This workshop will be lead by Aurora Hammond. B.SocWk.M.A.Psych Aurora has been a therapist and social worker for over 30 years. She founded and ran the government accredited College of Holistic Counselling in Sydney for 20 years and trained hundreds of practicing counsellors and therapists. Ray White Rural has today announced a series of auction events Ray White Rural has announced a series of auction events. Residential buyers and even lifestyle property purchasers are certainly affected by changes to lending in Australia, but reality is that commodity prices are high, the dollar is low, land values are trending upwards and buyers are out in force. The extension of days-on-market, the period it takes an agent to complete a sale after listing it publicly, is impacting transaction volumes. It’s true that certain property sale methods are less effective in this market. Our research, spanning thousands of recent sales, tells us that properties listed as private treaty have only a 12 per cent sale completion rate in 30 days in this adjusted market. It’s a highly inefficient way to extract information from buyers in this environment. So vendors who want a sale, who want competition, who want a fair price and a sale within a normal campaign period, will go to auction. And the transparency of auction is ideal for purchasers in this market too. Contracts for private treaty deals are falling over all over the country with buyers unable to finalise their finance. This simply doesn’t happen in auction, where registered bidders are qualified, and qualified bidders are finance approved. More than 8,000 people attended Ray White auctions across Australia and New Zealand last week with a preliminary auction campaign clearance rate of 60.4 per cent across the board. New South Wales led the pack with an auction campaign clearance rate of 70.5 per cent across the week, with Ray White NSW chief auctioneer Alex Pattaro commenting the auction day clearance rate remained steady at 57.6%.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Average registered bidders have climbed back up this week to 4.2, with 2.4 registered bidders being active, and crowd averages remaining consistent at 32.8 attendees per auction Ray White Victoria and Tasmania chief auctioneer Matt Condon said auction volume in Victoria was up 31.9 per cent on the previous week. For last week, Victoria saw preliminary auction campaign clearance rates of 53.4 per cent with Ray White auctions representing 20.93 per cent of all Victorian auctions, Mr Condon said. Our average number of active bidders has remained consistent with an average of 2.1 per auction last week. It was a rural NSW property that stole the show with the biggest under the hammer sale of the week, with 4985 Great Western Highway in Glanmire selling for $7.1M. There was strong enquiry throughout the campaign and they had between 10 to 20 people journey out for inspections. The property stormed past its price guide at auction. It was a record-breaking weekend for Brisbane suburbs with eight registered bidders competing in Grange, the property sold for $1,820,500. In Fairfield there were five registered bidders battling it out as the property sold under the hammer for $3.15M. Even with an election looming, it proves that our process does work in a market which is perceived to be a non-auction market. The company is launching the event series to defy the sentiment, a synchronised property auction of properties in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on Friday 7 June, 2019. Alongside the rainforest is a small productive organic orchard with 3 orange trees, 1 Tahitian lime tree, 1 Meyer lemon tree, 1 mandarin tree, a loquat, 6 olive trees producing approximately 7 kilos of olives per harvest, a tropical apple tree, multiple lady finger banana trees, 1 mulberry tree, 1 macadamia nut tree, a Longan fruit tree, and productive vegetable garden, all overseen by the “Chook Hilton” hen house. But it is the beautiful Queensland country house that will inspire you to call this property home. Craftsman built with rendered reinforced concrete block and handmade hardwood weatherboards, it has

a 2.7m ceiling height, cyclone and fire rated 6mm glass in windows and doors and rare Crows Ash timber flooring throughout. Large windows draw in the garden vistas and create a light and very welcoming internal space, with a central modern kitchen with Ceasarstone bench tops and gas stove at its heart. Deep shaded verandahs with hardwood decking extend both sides of the lounge room that is warmed in winter by the pot belly stove. In addition, the old Tewantin Post Office was dismantled and rebuilt on the property, it’s rustic character adding serious charm to a 48sqm home office, teenager retreat, rumpus room or art studio with hardwood floors, water supply and air-conditioning. Features: 50,000 litres rainwater storage; Solar hot water; Air-con & ceiling fans In a dress circle position on the edge of Cooroy, close to schools and shops and just 20 minutes to the beach, this beautiful home is a must to inspect. Contact Michelle Vercoe, Hinterland Sales Specialist at Noosa4Sale on 0408 949 890 to arrange inspection.

Set on 1057m2, this very well presented home is the perfect first home or investment property. The home offers 4 good sized bedrooms with ensuite to the main bedroom. Ken Finzel If you’re tired of the ever-increasing electricity bills, then it’s time to give Ken Finzel a call and have a chat about what a solar system can do for you. “I was lucky enough to meet a man with 30 years’ experience in the solar industry who was looking for someone to share his knowledge and was soon working for this company All Energy HQ and learning the working of a solar system and how it can save on energy costs,” said Ken.

“Applying this knowledge and experience, I have been able to help a lot of families save on their energy costs. I enjoy showing people how a solar system can pay for itself with the savings on those ever-growing energy bills. Solar will enable you to take control of these energy bills. It’s either paying your energy supplier for all your neverending energy or pay for your solar system and take away the burden of big energy bills. “We use all Clean Energy Council approved products which is the governing body in the solar industry. We are not tied to one product like some of the bigger companies. We use products that have proven reliability and warranties. We specialise in Solar systems, Lithium-ion Battery systems and Solar Hot water systems. “We are a small family owned company who believes in good old fashion service and value for money. We would be happy to do a free site inspection and provide you with a quote for your own tailor-made solar system. We can explain how the Government rebate can help you with the purchase of your solar system.” Start enjoying the benefits of a solar system now. Call Ken on 0400 359 515 to take the confusion out of a solar system.

Judith Cutts received the President’s chain for 2019/2020 from retiring President Trevor Bunney

The Probus Club of Cooroy has set out to live up to its motto of fun, fellowship and friendship in 2019/2020. Australia Day celebrations brought memorabilia out of the woodwork which led to much interest and was followed by games, jokes and a good old fashioned Aussie barbecue. A bountiful meal at the Chinese restaurant in Cooroy was held to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Fellowship abounded. Pomona Bowls Club then hosted the March dinner, showing we share ourselves around the district for friendship. We also took a trip down memory lane with a steam train ride from Gympie to Amamoor return on the Mary Valley Rattler. The Cooroy Probus Club invites semi-retired and retired members of the community to join with us at the Anglican Church Hall, Cooroy at 10.00am on the first Monday each month. Come and have a chat and morning tea and see if we can enhance your circle of friends. contact the membership officer on 0413 947 320 for further information. We have a new executive committee which looks forward to the Club celebrating the Club,s 30th birthday in May.

RDA fundraiser Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled are hosting another event to raise funds and awareness of Sunshine Coast RDA on Sunday 5th May at 2.30 pm. It is the “Annual Scone Off and High Tea”. SCRDA and Noosa Foodie, Martin Duncan, will be hosting this event in the undercover arena at our RDA Centre at Monak Rd, North Arm. Imagine a long table in the arena, with antique cups and saucers, posies of flowers along the length of the table with a couple of horses watching on. There will be an array of scones with jam

& cream with businesses from the Mary Valley Country competing against Noosa Country businesses for the bragging rights of best scones. Tickets to the “High Tea” are available at https:/ /www.trybooking.com/book/ event?eid=476945& There will also be a raffle for a beautiful gardenthemed quilt to be drawn on the day which was kindly donated by Sunshine Linus - Nambour Group. Tickets for the quilt are $2 or 3 for $5.
