Some of Australia’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers created and paraded their masterpieces across five competition categories. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme of “Wild Things” drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged. “It truly is phenomenal to watch the artists come together from near and far to create something special for the spectators,” she said. “The artists were under pressure to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competitions, yet all had smiles on their faces and really enjoyed themselves and celebrated the opportunity to work alongside fellow artists,” Danielle said. It’s a ‘no’ from Council for Apex Park facilities

EUMUNDI CATTLE SALE Please give David a call to discuss the current market or for any of your livestock requirements To receive our updates and reports via email, please reply with “ADD” to our email address below.

David: 0412 704456 Clint: 0428711102 Email: david@starihaauctions.com.au www.starihaauctions.com.au

Early in the year, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce sent a letter with a petition attached to Noosa Council regarding lack of public toilet facilities in Cooroy, particularly at Apex Park and on the east side of town. Council has now responded with a letter advising there are currently no plans for the construction of toilet facilities in Apex Park due the proximity of the existing facilities in Maple Street adjacent to the kindergarten and the library and the proposed new facilities for the hinterland playground which are to be located across the road from Apex Park on the green space opposite the library. The hinterland playground project is currently in the detailed design phase with

construction scheduled to commence during 2018/19 financial with completion anticipated by late 2019. The new toilet facilities in the hinterland playground will therefore be constructed well before Council would be able to plan, design and construct new facilities in Apex Park, especially taking into consideration the difficulties and cost of constructing in a flood prone area. Chamber also suggested opening the Queensland Rail toilets for public use and Noosa Council have advised they will raise this during future discussions with Queensland Rail. Chamber also requested that soap and hand towels be installed in the public toilets in Maple Street particularly given that these facili-

ties are used by patrons of our local cafes and it is basic hygiene to wash your hands after going to the toilet and before eating. Council advised that hand towel and soap dispensers are targeted by vandals and subject to theft. They have installed hand sanitising foam in a limited number of high demand amenities blocks in other towns. They can investigate adding these to the Cooroy amenities however noted that levels of service for all Council functions, including public amenities, are considered annually during the budget process. Changes to levels of service are considered having regard to the ability of Noosa ratepayers to fund the rate increase that increases to levels of service would incur.

The Chamber Executive are meeting with Council in coming weeks to get a further update and information on the hinterland playground project. Noosa Council’s other currently priorities for capital works projects in Cooroy include: • Improved pedestrian linkages into Apex Park and a raised pedestrian crossing from Apex Park to the Library and hinterland playground to ensure the existing 40km/hour speed limit in the area is maintained - commence during 2018/19 financial with completion anticipated by late 2019 • Additional off-street parking adjacent to Apex Park including an additional disabled parking space adjacent to the proposed new

raised pedestrian crossing commence during 2018/19 financial with completion anticipated by late 2019 • Additional off-street parking in the Lower Mill site - commence during 2018/19 with completion anticipated by late 2019 • Replacement of the Mary River Bridge due to commence in mid-2018. • Design of a raised pedestrian crossing on Maple St opposite the Memorial Hall to reduce traffic speeds through town and improve pedestrian safety. It is anticipated that this work will be constructed in the 2018/ 19 financial year. The current role of Apex Park and its facilities will be reviewed upon the completion of the new hinterland playground.

Muir’s Musings At the risk of sounding like an old fuddyduddy, I found it rather disconcerting and disappointing to hear a group of primary school aged boys playing in a playground using very degrading and derogatory language directed at each other. The boys were about 8 years old to about 11 or 12, and the language they were using involved “the f word” and “the c word”. They have obviously learnt that these words are acceptable behaviour from role models, be it from parents, siblings or older friends. What many don’t realise is that words used in public can be perceived as a reflection upon their character, upbringing, socioeconomic status, their demographic as well as the community in which they belong. Swearing just wasn’t commonplace in my childhood. Maybe I simply lived a sheltered upbringing, but I was taught from an early age that the use of profanities in a public place was completely unacceptable. I am certainly no saint when it comes to using the occasional swear word, but I’m always mindful of the company I am in. Using these words willy-nilly diminishes their impact and I prefer to use moments where swearing might be appropriate to showcase some rather more sophisticated and linguistically creative ways of expression.

I really despise mobility scooters, and unfortunately for me, they seem to be breeding exponentially on the Sunshine Coast. I understand that some people have disabilities

With Brigid Muir

and injuries, which warrant their use, however, there seems to be a large percentage of mobility scooter users who simply use them due to an aversion to exercise and out of sheer laziness. One such example was sighted today careering up Aerodrome Road. I spotted him later picking up a set of keys he dropped, which forced him to begrudgingly peel himself off his leather throne to retrieve them from the pavement. This in itself appeared to be the most exercise this scarily large man had undertaken in some time. I then later spotted a pensioner taking immense glee out of driving like a bat out of hell through the food court; smashing into chairs and terrifying small children. I noticed that she was clutching a set of rosary beads, so maybe she was running late for mass and believed Jesus would protect her from the melee she had created. Perhaps she simply took the blue pill and not the red ones this morning. Upon leaving the shopping centre, I was run up the back of the leg by a mobility scooter when I stopped to wait for the traffic lights. I turned and glared at the crazy old man sitting up like Lord Muck in his wheeled contraption. He avoided my glare and began bashing on the traffic light button with an exasperated look in his eyes. Like him, I was willing that light to turn green as soon as possible so that I could be far, far away from his mobility scooter.

It’s like sitting inside a hard, bright blue Coke can. The seats lack any kind of padding for the derrière and the fumes the bus generates smells like it is running on a lawnmower engine (which it probably is!) These buses are not so great during school holidays when they are packed to the gunnels with surfboards, boogie boards, skateboards, shopping bags, scooters, walking frames ... and a dozen or so teenage boys who had my gag reflex going with their god-awful BO mixed with Lynx deodorant stench. Fun times.

The new mini-Sunbus services are so awkward and uncomfortable if you are travelling with gear.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BOUQUET to the Cooroy Butter Factory for their great ‘KNOCK OFF’ event on Friday 13th April. The combination of live music, great Mexican food, a fun fashion parade, the wonderful exhibitions on show, plus the successful Artisan Store made for a memorable evening. Plaudits to the staff who showed they can put together a first class event, as well as all the volunteers and shop artists who worked so hard. Look forward to more such great events in the future. BOUQUET to Nurse Genevieve, the German Bakehouse girls, Deb from Lifeline and Cooroy Harvest Fresh staff who all came to my 80 year old husband’s rescue after he had a fall on the pavement last week. news Interest Rate Risk Management for Businesses Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank RUNNING a business inevitably requires a certain level of debt, and the loan repayments to service this debt are likely to be a significant part of your cost structure. Adverse movements in interest rates can have a serious impact on your bottom line. To offset this risk, you can fix your rate so your repayments become more stable each month. Additionally, subject to borrowing minimums, there are other products available to alleviate this risk. Some of these are: • Interest Rate Swaps • Forward Start Option • Deferred Start Fixed Rate • Interest Rate Caps & Collars An economical way to reduce your exposure to movements in interest rates is to take out an Interest Rate Collar. A Collar enables you to set the maximum and minimum interest rate payable on a floating rate borrowing. When a borrower purchases a Cap they continue to receive the full benefit of any variable rate decreases on your loan, at each rollover date. A Collar is a combination of an Interest Rate Cap (“Cap”) and an Interest Rate Floor (“Floor”). Taking out a Collar ensures the interest rate on the borrower’s variable loan will only float within the band set by the Cap and Floor rates. This provides protection against interest rate increases above the Cap rate but also means that the borrower forgoes the benefit of any decreases

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, April 25, 2018

below the Floor rate, at each rollover date. The purpose of adding the Floor is to reduce the cost in comparison to buying a Cap only. The premium payable to purchase the Collar depends on several factors including the loan amount, Cap and Floor rates relative to current market rates, fixed rate term, repayment frequency and interest rate volatility. It is possible to set a Cap and Floor combination to produce a zero cost collar. If you have any questions about your business or your banking, please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona). You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Separating fact from fiction when it comes to superannuation Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* IF you’re wondering whether super is improving retirement outcomes for Australians, we take a look at some of the findings. If you’ve got compulsory super contributions coming out of your wages or salary, or you’re making voluntary contributions, or both, you’re probably keen to know how super is making a difference to everyday Aussies, if at all, given it’s a system that has now been in place for over 25 years. To help you separate fact from fiction, here are a few of the findings that came out of the recently released myth busters paper, put together by industry body, the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA)1. Some of the top misleading super myths 1. Super isn’t getting people off the Age Pension The number of people accessing the government’s Age Pension has reduced on the back of people accumulating larger super balances, as well as more people working past the age of 65, and the Age Pension assets test thresholds being tightened on 1 January 2017. Since 1997, the proportion of Australians aged

over 65 on the Age Pension and age-related Veterans Pension has fallen from 79% to 70%, with expectations it will fall to 60% or less over the next 40 years. There is also an expectation that the ratio of people on a part Age Pension will eventually outweigh those on a full Age Pension, with the scales currently tipped the other way. 2. Super isn’t improving retirement outcomes Super is now the main source of income for around 22% of people aged over 65, with that figure growing rapidly, particularly in regard to recent retirees who’ve had more time to accumulate super. Between 2013–14 and 2015–16, the number of people with super as their main source of income rose over 30%, while the average super balance of those mainly relying on super increased from $407,000 to $470,000 over the same time period. 3. Aussies have most of their savings outside super For around 90% of Aussie households, super and owner-occupied properties are the dominant forms of saving to support living standards in

retirement. This finding was backed up by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, with its figures indicating super is the major financial asset of retiree households, and also of households before retirement. 4. Savings outside super will deliver better retirement outcomes Super investment returns tend to be higher than investments outside of super over a 10-year period. Individuals investing through super may also benefit from the favourable tax treatment that’s generally available through super, which could help to boost the amount that is invested.

Individuals in APRAregulated super funds may value having access to things like diversified investment portfolios and potentially lower fees than some other investment vehicles. For those who have employers that pay compulsory super contributions for them, money is being added to a super account on their behalf, on a regular basis, throughout their working life. Super considerations If you’re thinking about putting money into super, keep in mind that if you exceed the super cap limits, additional tax and penalties may apply.

The value of your investment in super can go up and down, so before making contributions, make sure you understand any risks associated with your chosen investment options. The government sets general rules about when you can access your super, which will typically be between the ages of 55 and 60, depending on when you were born, or under special circumstances. COOROY RAG Leonie nominated for Education Award

LEONIE Mac Cartie from Tadpoles Early Learning centre has been nominated for Early Childhood Educator of the year in the Australian Early Education Awards which is Australia wide. Leonie has been educating Cooroy locals for over 25 years now meaning that she has touch hundreds of families in Cooroy and surrounds. This nomination is in recognition of her passion for educating our young people and supporting their families. Leonie says she was lucky enough to be raised by a community who encouraged her curiosity, supported her inquisitiveness and allowed her to discover her authentic self. As a 17 year old studying early education, Leonie’s’ driving force was to become an educator that could facilitate these same privileges to as many children as she could. This same passion still drives Leonie some 26 years later; however, her philosophy has evolved to include the importance of promoting and modelling cultural awareness. Through her years of experience and community engagement Leonie has learnt that children are instinctively drawn towards nature and the outdoors, and therefore should be allowed to explore their natural environment.

Noosa’s first Rural Enterprise Program aims to deliver NOOSA’S first Rural Enterprise Program to develop a sustainable hinterland economy is currently underway with a series of community engagement programs about to be rolled out. The research project will use data and real-life experience to build a clear picture of the rural landscape and landholder interests. The multi-faceted project will explore what is currently happening in the hinterland, identify opportunities for growth or better use of resources and provide the tools and advice to build

the capacity of rural farmers and property owners. The program is being led by Nicole Duguid, who brings significant experience in rural and regional projects, including a similar rural futures project in the Mackay and Whitsunday region. According to Ms Duguid, understanding the economic, social and environmental value of our rural and regional communities is essential for a sustainable economy. “We need to better understand the range of sustainable farming and rural en-

terprise opportunities that would complement a positive Noosa hinterland environment,” she said. Significant community engagement throughout the project aims to encourage a vibrant agricultural community. “The program will engage with the local community, businesses and landowners to uncover and discuss local food supply chains and enable the identification of rural ‘neighbourhood’ collaborative ventures, amongst other things,” said Ms Duguid.

A comprehensive survey of the Noosa hinterland area will be conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast along with multiple workshops. Associate Professor Claudia Baldwin from the University of the Sunshine Coast said gathering valuable data about the Noosa rural areas is vital to plan for greater opportunities within the region. “The workshops will use interactive digital mapping and real-life experience to understand agricultural and local land use manage-

ment,” she said. Workshops will discuss current and future rural land use as well as new opportunities for diversification. The program is led by Country Noosa with partners from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa and District Landcare with funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and will run from April 2018-March 2019. To find out more about the program or to participate in a survey or workshop, visit www.countrynoosa.com.

There is also the chance to win a prize, as all participants will go into a random prize draw.” Tri Adventure will run the event, to be held at Lake Macdonald Park, Lake Macdonald Drive, Cooroy, adjacent to Noosa Botanic Gardens. All necessary equipment is available for loan. Entry is limited to 100 places. “In preparation, Tri Adventure will be conducting a free skills clinic on Saturday, April 21 at Kayak Noosa. To register for the Come-and-Try Adventure Challenge, to be held on May 27, visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au The Come-and-Try Adventure Challenge is funded through a $15,000 Game on Queensland Grant through the Queensland Government’s Embracing 2018 Legacy Program.

COOROY RAG Open Garden for White Ribbon Australia

David and Cathy Braddock are opening their 12 acre bush garden to the public for the first time to raise funds for White Ribbon Australia on Saturday the 5th and Sunday 6th of May from 10am to 5pm. Located at ‘Tulasco” 132 Solar Rd, Eumundi, come and stroll through the lush landscape which features beautiful views of Mt. Cooroy and the Conondale Ranges. When David and Cathy purchased the land in 2004 it was a totally bare cattle property. They saw the land’s potential as a garden because of its relatively high rainfall, beautiful views and interesting topography. Over the years different areas have been landscaped and developed. A jetty and fountain add interest to one of the dams and rain forest plants flourish around the perimeter. On the southern boundary beside the head waters of Six Mile Creek a picnic area has been created. Here the riparian vegetation has been restored and stepping stones added. A waterfall flows down a nearby gully where Giant Ferns and Fraser Island Creeper thrive. Around the house the informal garden beds are planted with hardy exotic perennials. A bridge over a large pond leads to the front door. Native fish and several species of rare frogs live among the water Lilies and Lotus. There

Council’s free garden mulch a great way to prep gardens for winter

is a small orchard and rose garden. A dense forest of sub-tropical trees has been developed around the smaller dam attracting birds back to the garden. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly has been seen several times. On the hilly slopes more than twenty species of Eucalyptus have been planted and this is a home for Pretty Faced Wallabies. Overall there are hundreds of different plants growing, demonstrating their remarkable adaption to the diverse vegetation areas in the garden. Married To The Sea Ceramics will also be on sale. These hand made organic stoneware and porcelain pieces are made locally by the couple’s daughter, Anna Braddock. Anna’s designs are strongly influenced by a love of the sea and the natural environment surrounding Noosa and the hinterland. 50% of the sales will go to White Ribbon Australia. Anna is representing White Ribbon Australia by running the New York City Marathon in November this year. This will raise money and awareness for the Foundation to help put a stop to violence against women and children. Entry fee to the Open Garden is $8 and If you can’t make it and would like to donate to this worthy cause go to www.gofundme.com/supportannaforwiterbbon

Get your gardens ready for winter with free mulch from Council. Council supplies single-grind garden mulch to residents at no cost from the EumundiNoosa Road landfill and Resource Recovery Centre, and the Cooroy and Pomona Waste Transfer Stations. “But, for a limited time we’re offering doublegrind mulch – usually $20 per cubic metre – for the reduced price of $5 per cubic metre,” says Council’s Waste Coordinator, Ian Florence. “Mulch helps prevent garden beds from drying out, it maintains a constant soil temperature and reduces the need for watering,” he said. “It’s also a great way to add extra organic matter to the soil to help plants thrive.” The double-grind mulch is available from Council’s Eumundi-Noosa Road Resource Recovery Centre. The free, single-grind mulch is available from the Eumundi-Road Resource and Recovery Centre, plus the Cooroy and Pomona Waste Transfer stations. Residents can self-load

the mulch at the Waste Transfer Stations, or staff will load both the single and double-grind mulch at the Eumundi-Noosa Road landfill and Resource Recovery Centre. The double-grind mulch discount ends April 30. The Cooroy Waste Transfer Station is open 8am-1pm Saturday to Monday; the Eumundi-

Noosa Road landfill and Resource Recovery Centre is open 7am-5pm each day, while the Pomona Waste Transfer Station is open Friday to Sunday, 8am to 1pm. For further information, contact Council on (07) 5329 6500, or visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ garden-green-waste-services

Cooroy Motel site to be redeveloped

Ron McCarthy (the previous owner of the Cooroy Bowls Club) has purchased the Cooroy Motel in Elm Street from Mark Bruchier with finalisation of the sale expected to be completed at time of printing. Mr McCarthy intends to redevelop

the lot into retail space and says the feedback from the community has been very position. “I believe the East side of Cooroy has a very big future. There’s very little commercial space available in Cooroy and the East side is ready to grow along

with the rest of the town,” said Mr McCarthy. “The traffic and parking in Maple Street is becoming an issue, along with crossing the railway bridge. I think having more retail stores on the East side of town could go a long way in alleviating some of

that congestion.” Mr McCarthy is currently working with architects and is enthusiastic about the design reflecting the feel and history of Cooroy. “I love Cooroy. You hear a lot of people talking about the ‘feel’ of the town. That’s what I want to reflect in the design. It’s the gateway to Noosa and it needs to look attractive and inviting. Hopefully instead of driving through Cooroy on their way to Noosa we can entice visitors to stop and explore our town,” he said. The clearing of the property is expected to take place in the very near future and plans will be submitted to council. Long term residents at the motel were notified some time ago that they were to vacate. Mr McCarthy said he’s already had genuine interest from a number of prospective tenants.

news Calm your pets and yourself with Cannopathy If your pet is stressed by the recent thunderstorms drop into Sunlight Aquarium and Holistic Pet Products store in Mary Street, Corooy and grab some Cann-a-calm. Cann-a-calm is an oil made from therapeutic grade hemp oils, produced in Montville and are made with all natural ingredients, free from GMO’s (NOT tested on animals and suitable for vegans). By rubbing a little behind your pet’s ears it has an immediate effect on stress, anxiety, hyperactivity and depression. Some people may mistake the name Cannopathy as only being associated with Hemp derived Cannabinoids, however the same properties within the Hemp plant are found throughout the plant kingdom and present with therapeutic benefits to humans and animals alike and are used world wide by vets, dentists, and is recommended by medical professionals. Paul Hentschel, owner of Sunlight Pets, is always

sourcing the most natural holistic products and has seen remarkable results when pet owners begin using holistic pet foods and products on their furry family members. The range of Cannopathy oils can be used on humans as well, so your whole family can benefit. The Cannopathy range he stocks also includes Rapid-Max which is a strong pain relief and antiinflammatory oil for muscles and nerves and helps with sciatica, arthritis, sprains, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, pre-menstrual cramps, shingles and bursitis. Cann-A-Frank helps with skin issues like acne, cysts, and inflammation and Indian-Hemp a natural antibiotic full of antioxidants that reduces

high fevers and is used as an immune booster. Since opening Sunlight Pets across from the tennis courts in Cooroy late last year, Paul has had great feedback from pet owners for the diverse range of pet foods he stocks containing no wheat, additives or colourings. They are holistic natural and organic foods that mimic the natural diet of animals, and are suited to young animals to ageing ones with health problems, stressed and overweight pets. Drop in and see Paul at 13 Mary River Road or call on 5447 7342 if you want the very best for your pets.

Echo Bags – Cooroy’s own handmade sustainable shopping bags

Joe from Cooroy Harvest Fresh with Tess and Ilse from Patches and Bronwyn from Cooroy Drapery showing off Cooroy’s new Echo bags Elizabeth Millears, an 88 year old local Cooroy lady and member of Patches of Cooroy, came up with the idea of Cooroy having their very own, locally made, reusable bags after seeing boomerang bags. Naming them Echo bags (because an echo comes back to you) Elizabeth and Ilse Oconnor , 82, also a member of Patches made the idea a reality. The ecologically sound Echo bags have hit the streets and you can grab your own at Cooroy Harvest Fresh and Cooroy Drapery. Only $4,

all proceeds will be donated to the Cooroy Memorial Hall. The bags are of course well-made and super sturdy, fully washablem able to be roledl up and put in your handbag so you never are without one. Made with a variety of patterned, quality light cotton that has all been donated by Patches of Cooroy members with 6 of the members working tirelessly in the making of them. Ilse said they chose Cooroy Harvest Fresh to stock them as Joe, the

owner was the first business in Cooroy to ban plastic bags and at Cooroy Drapery as Patches of Cooroy was originally formed there. If you would like to join Patches of Cooroy drop into the CWA hall Tuesday mornings from 9am to 2pm, where you can bring your own projects, sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery and painting, and have a chat with like minded people.

‘Looking In’ exhibition THERE is a new exhibition opening at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Local artist Jeanine Hill is exhibiting with the theme “Looking In”, a collection of abstract and realistic canvases, informed by living from the inland to the sea, and from a lifetime or working with people. She has been painting seriously for the last five years, and has an interesting and eclectic variety of work. Jeanine is a Social Worker, now part time, who understands that we are all influenced by our own experiences, which shape how we look at things. She is moving toward capturing the idea and atmosphere of what she sees, and paints mostly from memory and experience. She invites you to come and view her work and interpret it from your unique perspective and experience. The exhibition will be held in the Banana Shed at 10 Railway Street, Pomona, Qld, starting Saturday 28 April until 31 May 2018.

Enter online for 2018 Mary Valley Art Festival FILLING in the new online form is the quickest way to enter the 2018 Mary Valley Art Festival, to be held in Imbil on July 6-8. The annual three-day event boasts a new category this year, with the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsoring a $1000 prize for artworks fitting the special theme Mary Valley, Naturally. That makes the total prize pool of $7850, across categories including the Bendigo Bank $2500 Open Award, landscape, animalia and still life. There will be three categories for youth entries and all will be eligible for the $200 Artpack Award. Entries close on June 18 and you can visit www.maryvalleyartfestival.com.au or phone 0407 375267 for further information. Organising body Mary Valley Artslink has shaken up the art festival program this year. It has moved the gala awards evening from Thursday to Friday to encourage people to come to the festival and make a weekend of the outing in Mary Valley Country, just a short 40-minute drive from Noosa. Viewing opens at 10am on Friday July 6, with the awards that night, where artists and art lovers can celebrate with live music, licensed bar and finger food. A curator’s talk and short film by established artist Pat Cale are included in the Saturday program and several art studios will be open to the public over the weekend as part of the Gympie Gallery Studio Trails. The closing celebrations on Sunday July 8 will showcase the Thunderbird Demolition People’s Choice Award and Youth Award presentations, with food vans and markets, live music, art demonstrations, kids’ art and a licensed bar. To capitalize on the three-day event, you can purchase a weekend pass which gives you unlimited entry to the Imbil Public Hall and surrounds. The festival attracts many local and South-East Queensland professional and amateur artists and draws sponsorship from local business, who gain exposure to wider markets as a result. At a social level, it continues to hold its place as one of the key cultural events on the Mary Valley calendar.

COOROY RAG Flourish program at Noosa Christian College THIS year Noosa Christian College and Noosacare, Kabara in Cooroy have partnered to implement ‘FLOURISH’, a program that brings students and the elderly together, enhancing the lives of both young and old. There are smiles all around when Year 3 students and Kabara residents meet fortnightly to sing, read stories and play games. Already, students are experiencing the rewards of new friendships, fun times and new understandings through contributing to their local community in a tangible way. Year 3 Teacher, Mrs Angela Gray is very excited about ‘FLOURISH’. “The children are increasingly taking ownership of the program as they come up with ideas for activities and new songs to sing. Many of the children spend their own time making gifts or drawing pictures to give to the residents. The flow on effect is a sense of satisfaction and personal growth from seeing other people’s responses.” The FLOURISH program is aligned with the Australian Curriculum and assists in building confidence, social skills and self-identity, enabling students to create and maintain positive relationships and make a difference in the community. Intergenerational connection also provides many benefits for the Kabara residents and they look forward to children’s visits. Kabara Diversional Therapist Michelle Connor welcomes the program and is delighted with the response of the residents. “It’s amazing to see the difference in the elderly people when the kids are around– it’s better than any medicine.”

health Is the pollen driving you crazy?

COOROY RAG

New cafe at Kabara

SNEEZING? Itchy, watery eyes? There are some things you can do at home that may help improve your symptoms and get you through the ‘sneezy’ seasons. Some of these include: Splashing the eyes with cold water to flush out any pollen/allergens; Staying indoors on windy days and as much as possible during this season; Reduce your exposure to dust and dust mites, animals and animal dander/hair; Be clever about the plants you have in your garden choose plants that are pollinated by birds/insects, rather than plants that release seeds into the air; Limit your grass area at home, consider replacing with bricked/paved areas; Smear petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) inside the nose to prevent; pollen from irritating the lining of your nose; Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth; Consider using a de-humidifier to reduce the mould content in your home; When driving in the car, close the windows and use the air conditioner; Limit your exposure to cigarette smoke; Use soap-free, fragrance free cleansers that won¹t irritate or dry out the skin. Consult your LiveLife pharmacist to see if these treatments may help your symptoms: Saline (salt water) nose sprays and drops may help loosen and remove mucus in the nose and sinuses; Decongestants - May clear a blocked nose. They are available as syrups, tablets, nasal sprays and drops; Antihistamines - May help relieve a runny nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes; Steroid nasal sprays May help to reduce swelling and inflammation in the sinuses and reduce sneezing etc. Visit your local LiveLife pharmacy for more advice on how to feel your best this Season!

NoosaCare President Stefan Prystupa, Retired President Otto Alder and CEO Megan D’Elton cut the ribbon for the new Kabara cafe THERE is a new Café in town! This little gem situated at Kabara has created a beautiful caffeinated haven for our NoosaCare residents and staff. The modern industrial design is the perfect addition and provides a space for families to catch up and relax over a cuppa. Complete with espresso machine and a selection of teas it looks, feels, and smells like a trendy coffee shop but is situated conveniently on our resident’s doorstep. The Kabara Café has been long awaited particularly for our residents that suddenly find it difficult to get out and about. The space is perfect to either sit in air-conditioned comfort or in the sunshine on the patio, just like their favourite coffee shop in town. After officially opening and ribbon cutting in

March with our CEO Megan D’Elton, NoosaCare President Stefan Prystupa and Retired president Otto Alder, residents and visitors have already been making the most of the new addition. The cafe offers a selection of house made sweet treats, light gourmet lunches, mouth-watering Paninis, and of course everything you need to keep you caffeinated. As always, NoosaCare sources fresh produce locally where ever possible and is supportive of local business to keep our drinks fridge stocked. In conjunction with the Kabara kitchen staff the cafe is run by the lovely volunteers Sonja, Anne and Deb, who will be serving Monday- Friday 9am-1pm. Next time you visiting a loved one at Kabara, make sure you pop in for a visit.

COOROY RAG

Young Guns meet the Big Guns of NRL JARRAH Green was lucky enough to be taken down to Sydney as part of the Young Guns Team by our local NRL club, the Noosa Pirates. “We were sent down there to give us the opportunity to learn about decision making, mateship, teamwork and about how hard work and perseverance makes a difference to what you can achieve in life,” said Jarrah. “We were lucky enough to visit the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, the Penrith Panthers and the Sydney Roosters where we got to speak to legends of the game such as Jake Friend, Cooper

Cronk and Moses Mbye. The clubs gave us tour of their facilities and each talked about the work ethic and commitment which is needed in life if you want to achieve your goals which I personally found very interesting. “I would sincerely thank the Cooroy Rag and all of our other sponsors to help make this trip a reality and I would also like to thank our coaches Tony Rutledge, John Wilson, Gary Dean and all the people working behind the scenes for making this once in a lifetime trip possible and for putting up with us all week.”

A new era was ushered in at the PomonaCooran Cutters when round 1 in the Division 2B competition kicked off on April 7 at Pirate Park Tewantin against an old adversary Palmwoods. Despite the Cutters defeating them in a trial match 3 weeks 24-6 no one was thinking this was going to be a walk in the park. The new player alliance with Noosa enabled the Cutters to field a full 19 man squad. This year the team will be made up & Cutters registered players & the remaining spots filled with reserve grade or ellegible under 18s players. Despite not touching the ball for 9 minutes in the 1st half & doing a mountain of defence, the score was only 10 nil to Palmwoods. Errors & penalties early in the 2nd half saw the score quickly move to 20 nil. The next score was vital & Reef Carlile making his senior debut scored in the corner & momentum changed. In the space of 20 minutes through tries to Kyle Jones, Gary Holder & finally Adam Linde saw the score level up at 20 all. Neither team could break the deadlock in the final few minutes. The crowd was very appropriative of both teams efforts in humid conditions. Front rower Lachy Delbridge

UPCOMING GAMES:

took home the 3 points & his front row partner Jon Broad the 2 points & Riley Lourigan also making his senior debut taking home 1. The following Saturday a trip to Gympie to face Maroochydore was the task. With several players unavailable a vastly different team was named. The bounce of the ball went the Swans way with score moving to 14 nil inside the first 20 minutes. With possession evening up, big Gus Sullivan made the score 14-4 just on half time. Momentum & field position was able to be turned into points after the break with the evergreen Kevin Aspinall & Gary Holder crossing for tries to even the score at 14 all. With either team not giving an inch it took a lucky bounce from a kick gifting rookie winger Reef Carlile his 2nd try in as many games. Final score 18-14. In a match were all 19 players gave everything Riley Lourigan took out the 3 points, Adam Linde 2 points & Liam Cobb 1. Don’t forget the Cutters country kitchen is open every Friday night & weekly specials can be found at www.facebook.com/ cutterscountrykitchen

Games medallists doing Cooroy proud TAYLAH Robertson brings home a Bronze medal in boxing. Coached by Impact’s Mark Evans, Taylah has done herself, her Club, her family and her coach proud. “To lose on a questionable split points decision was heart breaking to watch,” said Evans. “Many including myself had truly thought that we had done enough to beat the Worlds No. 1, Lisa Whitsides from England. We will cop it on the chin and put it behind us as we now start our preparation for the Elite Women’s World Championship selection trials and then ultimately selection for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. “To all her Sponsors, people who bought Team Taylah shirts, all the messages and phone calls I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. The support and love from you all has been amazing. To see her up there on the big stage competing against the number one seed in her division filled my heart with pride. “This kid deserves everything that comes her way & I believe is destined for great things. She walked into my gym as a small kid with big dreams & a burning desire to reach those dreams. She takes no short cuts in anything that she does. She continues to stay true to herself & follow the pathway that we have set for her to achieve her dreams without question. “She has sacrificed so many things to get to where she is today - family, friends, relationships, employment and a normal teenager’s life to name a few. “As a Coach I could not be prouder of this little weapon! A Bronze medal at 19 years of age at the Commonwealth Games ain’t that bad. I look forward to the journey ahead and promise that this kid is only just starting to shine!” -

IT was a proud moment for Lester and Beth Bonnell of Cooroy as they watched their son Tony win gold in the B6/B7/B8 lawn bowls finals against New Zealand in a nail biting finish at the Gold Coast last week. The para lawn bowler, along with team-mates Josh Thornton and Ken Hanson, beat South Africa convincingly in the semi to meet New Zealand in the gold medal match. Leading all the way until the last round they were a shot behind with a single roll remaining. Hanson stepped up and blasted away two Kiwi bowls from the jack, giving the Australians a last-gasp win. Tony took up bowls in the mid 1990s. He’s categorised as a B6 (most disabled) because he is an above the knee amputee and played well in second position at these Games. “He lost his leg when he was only 18 from cancer and has some trouble with balance. He competed in Glasgow in 2014 but didn’t make the finals,” said Beth. The layout was changed to round Robin for the Gold Coast Games with all six countries playing five games against each other. Australia finished top of the ladder with only one blemish against England. Although Tony now lives at the Gold Coast and is coached by Kelvin Kerkow and Steve Glasson at South Tweed Bowls Club, we are still claiming it as a Gold for Cooroy! Tony will be heading to WA LIMITED next month to represent TIME ONLY Queensland.
