‘Field of Poppies’ rolled out for ANZAC Day

1,834 red and purple popples was the final tally for the ANZAC Day display at Cooroy RSL. Congratulations to all our wonderful Cooroy locals who put in such a huge effort to knit and crochet such an impressive number of very personalised poppies. Heather Ford and her team worked hard to arrange and attach all the poppies to the camouflage nets..

“The field of poppies was rolled out on ANZAC Day for the main service representing loved ones who gave their life in war,” said Heather. The purple poppies are for all the animals that also made the ultimate sacrifice alongside their human counterparts.

And the Winners are … THE 2017 Australian Body Art Festival saw around 60 competitors embrace this year’s theme of ‘Wonderland. The colourful community arts event drew approximately 7000 spectators to watch some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers create and parade their masterpieces. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme of “Wonderland” drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged. “Some artists focused on Alice in Wonderland, others on Winter Wonderland and many on what their own personal Wonderland was, but they were all spectacular”. Danielle highlighted what a great weekend the event is for art-loving members of the public. “It truly is phenomenal to watch the artists come together from near and far to create something special,” she said. “The artists were under pressure to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competitions, yet all had smiles on their faces and really seemed to enjoy themselves and celebrate the opportunity to work alongside fellow artists,” Danielle said. The 2017 Australian Body Art Festival was a new festival to Cooroy and it was run as a community event by a team of over 100 volunteers funded through donations, crowd funding and support from local businesses. “The festival had a great feel and was a

huge success for the first year. It will only get better from here.” If you missed the fun or just want to relieve it, make sure you come to the photo exhibition of the photographic competitors at the Butter Factory Arts Centre from 3 May to 16 May with the official launch and prize giving ceremony on Saturday 6 May at 1pm. Will we ever learn? It is an obvious truth that man’s greatest enemy, by far, Is man himself, not some dictator, or foreign Commisar. The world survived the last big war, we remember it in our hearts, Now the war mongers are sparring for another, they’ll be happy if it starts. I’ll bet the men who start it, won’t be at the recruiting depot, They’ll be as far away as they can safely go. This love of conflict it’s hard to understand, To turn the earth into an ugly no-man’s land. War is dirty, it is cruel, it’s viciously unjust, Its first casualties are truth, goodwill and trust. It brings out the best in man, it also brings out the beast, When all the savagery of conflict is horribly released. There is no glamour, no decency, no romance, no glory, Nothing but sorrow, and misery in war’s senseless story. One thing we have learned from history I fear, Is that we have never learnt from history, that is crystal clear. We can only pray for a truly peaceful resolution, And hope that common sense will deliver a happy solution.

Chicken farm outcome thanks in part to de-amalgamation THE end result of the long-running battle over a proposal for an intensive chicken farm at Cooroy is in part thanks to de-amalgamation, says Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington. “This is an excellent example of why we fought to put the ‘local’ back into our local government,” Mayor Wellington said. “Were it not for de-amalgamation, this inappropriate development would have proceeded, in spite of fierce local opposition. “The original application for a Top Forestry Road intensive chicken factory first came before the Sunshine Coast Council when I was councillor for Division 12. “After careful consideration, I moved a motion of refusal at the Ordinary Meeting of November 2013. The vast majority of southern councillors clearly wanted to approve the development. My refusal motion failed, however the matter was deferred to the December meeting so that more information could be gathered. “That December meeting was the last meeting of the big council prior to de-amalgamation. I argued that the matter should be left to the incoming Noosa Council to decide. Thankfully my deferral motion got up. Had it not, the development would have proceeded, and there would have been nothing Noosa Council could have done to prevent it. “Eventually, of course, the development application came before the new Noosa Council to

decide. It was refused. This was a case of local councillors deciding on a local issue of considerable importance to local residents. Credit must go to the large number of residents who rallied to the cause. “Most were opposed to the development, though I do want to acknowledge that there were some who preferred to see it proceed. “When the Council decision was appealed by the applicant, Noosa Council opted to defend their decision in the Planning & Environment Court. Now that the applicant has withdrawn that appeal, the three and a half year-long battle is finally over. Many a nearby resident can finally breathe a sigh of relief. “Having the matter decided by a truly local council, with councillors having direct and continual access to public meetings and resident viewpoints, is exactly why we fought to get our council back. The issues surrounding this development were never about limiting economic development in the hinterland, but rather about the appropriateness of the proposal, the living amenity for nearby residents and safety on our rural road network. “While I acknowledge that the applicant also had to experience much frustration, and of course considerable expense, I do believe we achieved the best outcome for our community. “This adds to a long string of successful results the new Noosa Council has experienced in recent legal actions.”

Biggest & best woodworking show THE Cooroora Woodworkers club will be holding their 28 th annual Wood and Craft Show on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May. The show will be held in the Cooroora Woodworkers’ clubhouse and surrounding precinct located at 8 Lowermill Road, Cooroy. The organisers are confident that the 2017 Show will be their best show ever. The heart of the show is always the competitions where regional woodworking clubs compete in the Interclub Competition and school students compete in the Schools Competition. As well club members compete in their own internal Woodcraft Competition. All these competitions have valuable prizes over a whole range of wood working activities. Most importantly the competitions pro-

mote the skills of woodworking. Woodworking is one of the oldest known crafts and the continuation of the craft and skills is of benefit to society in general but also to the crafts person whose constant drive to perfection is a mental stimulus and a great health benefit. Environmental concerns are always important and the club’s milling team saves many logs from around the Cooroy region to be recycled into useful timber. The shows increasingly reflect environmental issues. Visitors to the show will be able to see all the competition entries as well as see demonstrations of woodworking, timber milling and a whole range of quality items offered for sale. Entry to see the competition entries is $2 (under 16 yrs free).

Community Banking explained Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank CHOICES. One of them is a choice of where you do your banking - and everyone has to do that somewhere. Each edition I also share suggestions about how you can take control of your finances in any number of ways through any number of banking products. But today, I want to share why we come to work each day and why we’re growing with our community. Cooroy Community Bank branch opened in November 2002 and the Pomona agency in April 2015. Of course we’re sharing in our success as our growth continues, but many locals still don’t know what having the branches in Cooroy and Pomona actually means for them. Locally, our branch is giving the Noosa hinterland a real say in its own future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank – in that order. As we work to provide banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. We have branches right across the Sunshine Coast and provide our communities with more than just quality banking services. Our branches provide full banking services, deliver employment opportunities for local people and keep local capital in our communities. Our branch team is passionate about our work, our community and proud to be part Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, April 26, 2017

of the more than 310 Community Bank branches across the country have returned more than $165 million to date. This result tells us we’re continuing to feed into the prosperity of communities, not from them. In the Noosa hinterland, we continue to partner with our community, sporting groups, schools and organisations in assisting the delivery of projects and their messages. So far, our Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona agency has collectively returned more than $700,000 - and we’re just getting started. That’s just a quick snapshot of what Community Banking is all about. Our team is always happy to share even more of our story with you, deliver the right advice and the products you need. So contact us for a chat on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona). You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

news Choosing an investment option for your super

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* AS part of your retirement savings plan, it is important you understand how your superannuation money is invested by your super fund. No two people’s financial situation and investment requirements are the same. To cater for these different needs, most superannuation funds offer you a choice about how your superannuation money is invested. Funds offer a range of different investment portfolios that you can choose from. You can also choose to spread your super money over multiple investment portfolios. One advantage of investment earnings in super is that they are taxed differently to your other income. The maximum tax rate on superannuation investment earnings is currently 15 per cent, compared to the marginal tax rate that is applied to your investment earnings and income outside superannuation, which could be up to 45 per cent. The different investment options Most superannuation

funds will offer a range of investment options for you to choose from. These will vary in their level of risk and the kinds of assets held within them. You may see terms such as Growth, Balanced, Conservative and Cash. Other funds may refer to investment options like Australian Equities, International Equities, Sustainable Shares, Property, and Fixed Interest. Further information about the options available, the assets held within them and the likely risks and returns should be available on your fund’s website. Why should I care how my super is invested? You’re probably thinking it’s not your job to worry about how your super is invested, but it pays to take an interest. Investment choice can have a big impact on the final lump sum that you receive when you retire, due to the impact of compound interest. Over a working lifetime, the same amount of money invested in different investment options can

produce different results at the end. Therefore it is important the take the time to understand the different options available to you and the potential impact it could have on your investment earning. How do I choose? Your age is very important when it comes to making an investment choice. When you join a fund you are asked if you would like to choose a specific investment option on the form. If you don’t choose an investment option you are placed in what is commonly called the default option. If you didn’t choose a specific investment option when you joined the fund this doesn’t mean you can’t select one later. When it comes to choosing which investment option is most suitable for your superannuation savings, there are a couple of basic questions that you need to ask yourself before making a decision: • How much risk do I feel comfortable taking? • What type of return am I seeking for my

money? • How long will I be investing for? The answers to these questions will help guide you in choosing the right investment option or mix of options for your superannuation savings. Your age is very important when it comes to making an investment choice. How long you expect your money to remain invested (or your investment timeframe), will have a significant impact on the investment mix that is most appropriate for you. If you are young and have a long time until you will need to access your money, the short term ups and downs that can occur when investing in higher risk options such as shares may not be so important. History has shown that over the long term, short term fluctuations tend to be outweighed by the higher returns from these ‘riskier’ types of assets. If you will need to access your money soon, it may be more appropriate to protect it by investing in assets that are considered lower risk,

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

even though this may result in lower returns over the medium to long term. On the other hand, people entering retirement may still have 20-30 years to plan for. Depending on your appetite for risk, it may still be appropriate to invest some or even most of your savings in ‘growth’ products for the longer term. There is a lot to think about when deciding where to invest, so please call us on (07) 5447 7740 if you would like to discuss. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. COUNCIL is calling on the community to help support a glossy blackcockatoo research project. Funded by the Glossy Black Conservancy it aims to shed light on the bird’s nesting habits. Council Environment Officer Tyron de Kauwe said the glossy black-

cockatoo was a mysterious bird, which made knowing how to better protect the species, difficult. “With so many unanswered questions it is challenging to make informed decisions about improving breeding success rates, which is important given the species is threatened in Queensland,” he said. Residents can help support the research project by reporting glossy black-cockatoo nest locations. The Conservancy is funding PhD student Daniella Teixeira of The University of Queensland to investigate bioacoustic technology as a means of monitoring the birds. “Daniella is using automatic sound recorders to capture the calling behaviour of the parents and the nestling during nesting season,” Mr de Kauwe said. This data will be used to develop bioacoustic methods, which could help answer questions

about breeding locations, nest survival rates, hunger and feeding habitat. If successful, bioacoustic monitoring could be used as a method for the long-term monitoring of glossy black-cockatoo breeding. “Anyone who sees some nesting birds, or suspects glossy blackcockatoos are nesting nearby, let Daniella know so that the nest can be followed up,” Mr de Kauwe said. “If you see a trio – a mum, dad and juvenile – Daniella would love to know this as well, as it might indicate nesting in the region.” Send details of nest locations to d.teixeira@uq.edu.au or via the Facebook page – search Black-Cockatoo Project. Or report them to Council on (07) 5329 6500. Mr de Kauwe said residents could also help by submitting videos or sound recordings of glossies at nests, or of breeding pairs or trios when they’re not at the nest.

Holy Smoke! THE heritage listed, Cooroy landmark boiler room chimney was replaced on Monday April 10. Albeit a little shorter than the original, the bottom of the chimney is the only part of the larger chimney that was heritage listed. The top half was not replaced because it was not heritage listed. The refurbished heritage listed part of the chimney has been treated to prevent rust and has a new rain cap. I believe all other repairs to the building have been completed and it won’t be long before it’s open to the public again. Photo by Robert Gray Cooroy Camphor Laurel

ONCOLOGY Massage is an evidence based, safe therapeutic massage that is available during all stages of treatment for cancer, and is a modality that continues to support the person’s wellbeing post treatment. Cancer Council, BCNA (Breast Cancer Network of Australia), Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre, the PeterMac Institute, Gawler Foundation, Quest For Life, Chris O’Brien’s Lifehouse, and COSA (Clinical Oncology Society of Australia) have Oncology Massage Therapists on their preferred practitioner listings. The Oncology Massage Therapist takes into consideration your current health status and tailors your massage to suit. Side effects experienced from conventional treatment of cancer, such as

fatigue, nausea, pain, anxiety and depression, and the symptoms of the disease process itself can be reduced. Other benefits can be relief from shortness of breath, insomnia and dry mouth (Cassileth and Vickers, 2004). Stress and anxiety, plus the extra responsibilities around work and household jobs can have a physical and emotional effect on all, including family, friends and caregivers. This gentle massage is also beneficial for them. Robyn Brandon Remedial Massage Therapist at Advanced Physio Cooroy is currently completing training to become a recognised Oncology Massage Therapist. Robyn is also a Recognised Provider of Remedial Massage Services with all Australian Private Health Funds including HICAPS. Ph 5447 7670.

The good bugs THE digestive tract is where you absorb the nutrients that power your body, so a healthy gut is important for overall health. There are close to two kilograms of bacteria in the gut. Literally billions of tiny micro-organisms known as ‘microbiota’. Jodie Persovic, Dietitian and Naturopath, says these good bugs encourage healthy digestion and support the immune system by keeping the undesirable bacteria (bad bugs) at minimal levels. If there are not enough good bugs then the bad bugs get out of hand leading to digestive problems, immune conditions such as recurrent infections, eczema or allergies. Fortunately, it is possible to get the population of beneficial microbiota back. Jodie says the food we eat has a big influence on our microbiome, but today will focus on the benefits of probiotic’s and how to chose the right one. There are hundreds of probiotic formulas on the market and it can be difficult to choose the formula that will be of most benefit. Jodie explains important factors including: 1) Bug Selection: Different strains of probiotic bacteria perform different tasks within the body. For example Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM® and Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 are strains shown to promote the regrowth of many species of beneficial bacteria within the gut, whilst Lactobacillus plantarum 299v is best at treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 2) Stability: You may have noticed some probiotic formulas on the shelf at your local pharmacy or health food store, not in the fridge. Unfortunately, although some strains can survive

higher temperatures for periods of time, being exposed to fluctuating temperatures can render some of the bacteria less viable and thus not give you the therapeutic results you are expecting. 3) Quality and Consistency: Like any medicine, we expect the capsules will contain active ingredients of the highest quality so they deliver effective results. Choosing brands that do real-time stability testing and microbiology laboratory testing for quality and consistency gives you confidence that the product will deliver results right up to the expiry date. 4) Dose: Some probiotics that offer a wide range of strains may not deliver the best outcome. This is because a capsule with too many varieties may not have a high enough dosage of each bug required to get a therapeutic effect. Also, contrary to popular belief, formulas with fewer strains (or even just one) do not create an unhealthy monoculture of micro-organisms in the gut. Research has shown that certain strains (in the right dose) can alter the gut environment to favour the regrowth of a range of species. So it isn’t necessary to replace every strain of bacteria to achieve the best balance required for good health. As always if you are in any doubt consult a qualified health professional. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. Ways to stay healthy this winter IMMUNITY is the season’s magic word. When temperatures drop and windows and doors stay shut, viruses can thrive indoors; if your immune system isn’t up to the task, you’re likely to catch the latest bug to hit town. This means less energy, the possibility of health complications, and just plain old feeling awful. That’s why it’s essential to ward off the very real threat of colds, flu, and other scary winter germs lurking on every doorknob and public bathroom, Get a flu shot: An influenza vaccination can reduce the risk of flu illness by 50 to 60%. Stock up on pens: Cold and flu germs are easily passed through hand-tohand contact so any way you can avoid touching public objects, such as the communal pen at the bank, will cut your risk. Buy plenty of hand sanitizer: Those who carry hand sanitizer with them have 59% fewer cases of stomach bugs than nonusers. That’s because, when used correctly squirt out enough gel so your hands still feel damp after rubbing together for 10 to 15 seconds - these products nearly eliminate

germs. Look for ones that don’t require water and have at least 60% alcohol. Join a club: You know that friendships counteract the harmful effects of stress hormones, but new research says the more friends you have, the healthier you’ll be. Express yourself: A constructive argument with your spouse can actually increase immunity. Researchers asked 41 happy couples to discuss a problem in their marriage for 15 minutes. The researchers detected surges in blood pressure, heart rate, and immune-related white blood cells, all of which were similar to the benefits seen with moderate exercise. People with a type D personality - those who keep their opinions and emotions hidden - have killer T cells that are less active than those found in more expressive peers. Set goals: Challenging situations can work to your advantage: When we’re facing adversity, we become hyperalert and our bodies guard themselves against enemies whether that’s a predator or a virus. So, even though unresolved stress can make you sick by suppressing immunity, raising

blood pressure, and increasing your risk of heart disease, the ups and downs of everyday life, such as working toward a deadline or a promotion, will actually provide a health boost. Sign up for a rubdown: Massage therapy has been shown to improve immune function and energy levels in cancer patients. In a 500-person review study, massage lowered cortisol levels by up to 53%. Experts believe this boost can extend even to those who are simply dealing with the daily pressures of life. A weekly kneading, whether it’s a professional massage or simply a back rub from your significant other, can also increase serotonin and dopamine, mood boosters that may help protect your immunity, as well. Take a daily multivitamin: Look for one with 100% of the recommended daily values of vitamins A, B6, B12, C, and D and the minerals chromium, copper, folic acid, selenium, calcium, and zinc. (Here are 5 signs you may be vitamin D deficient.) Take your multi during a meal that contains a bit of fat so you can absorb the nutrients better; a glass of wa-

Make it happen

ter will help the pill dissolve. Pop astragalus: This Chinese root - pills are available in health food stores - has a long track record as an immunity booster. Research suggests that it stimulates the bone marrow to produce more disease-fighting white blood cells, which in turn produce antibodies and interferon, an antiviral protein. Move more: Men who got in 3 hours a day of moderate activity (the equivalent of walking briskly, climbing stairs, or playing tennis) were 35% less likely to catch a cold, compared with those who did only 1 hour. Wash your hands - a lot: Studies show a decrease in respiratory illness of 45% from the previous year among 45,000 recruits who had been instructed to wash their hands at least 5 times a day. Turn in: Getting enough sleep is the most important thing to do this season, because any other precautions you take against cold or flu - the right food, supplements, even vaccinations - won’t offer the same protection if your body’s too tired to use them properly.

Have you made your wishes known? It’s not too late to get it down in writing on the ‘Things to do before I die’ wall outside the RSL.

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.” ~Doug Larson

COOROY RAG

GREAT customer service goes a long way in business, so it’s no surprise that Noosa Hinterland-based Hargrave Real Estate has taken out a major real estate award. Hargrave Real Estate Principal Phil Hargrave said, “we are both humbled and thrilled to be named the RateMyAgent 2017 Agency of the Year Pomona.” The awards compare more than 26,000 agents and agencies across Australia. According to RateMyAgent CEO & CoFounder, Mark Armstrong, these are the only awards which use “verified customer reviews and feedback”, making them the most “honest gauge of the customer service an agent has provided”. “Out of the many real estate awards out there, this is the one that means the most to us, because it is a ‘customer choice’ award, and is not a self-nominated award done for some marketing spin. It’s based on REAL and HONEST feedback and ranks Hargrave Real Estate in the TOP 11% of Agencies (Including the major franchise groups) in Australia “ Phil said. “Buying and selling your home can be stressful - it’s a major investment. We make it as easy and stress-free as possible, because that’s what great customer service is all about.” The RateMyAgent Awards are now the largest real estate awards in Australia, recognising the agents and agencies that rank the highest, based on sales volume,

Page 20 - Cooroy Rag, April 26, 2017

customer reviews and feedback. “These awards are the only industry awards to put sellers’ needs first, using customer reviews as a leading indicator of an agent’s success over 2016,” said Armstrong. Sam Hargrave said winning this prestigious accolade was very much a team effort. “We are delighted to be named the top real estate agent in Pomona - and we are proud to look after the real estate needs of the Noosa Hinterland. “This award recognises the hard work and dedication of our whole team and, to be honest, we work in this industry because we love it. “Consistently getting great results for our clients is the best reward of all. Knowing that so many of our customers appreciate our work and have rated us using the RateMyAgent site is the icing on the cake,” said Sam. “To be voted #1 by your customers is a real testament to the service we provide.” To see what customers said about Hargrave Real Estate, visit https:// www.ratemyagent.com.au/real-estateagent/sam-hargrave-bs598/reviews and https://www.ratemyagent.com.au/realestate-agent/phil-hargrave-bn595/reviews If you need help buying or selling property in the Hinterland, give Phil, Sam or George a call or visit www.hargraverealestate.com.au

WHAT a crazy start to the year the Impact Boxing Academy have had this year. We have had athletes competing in NZ, Melbourne and all over Queensland as the team was preparing for the Under 19’s Australian Titles and the Elite Mens selection event for the World Titles. Impact Boxing took 11 athletes to the recent Qld Titles and with an outstanding performance from the team managed to secure 11 more Qld Titles for the club! The event was run over two days and attracted athletes from all over Queensland. All 11 Impact Boxers were then selected as part of the Queensland Team to represent at the recent Australian Titles that were held in Adelaide. The Australian Titles is an elimination event that runs over a 6 day period. This event attracts the best boxers from each State of Australia to battle it out. If you win your bout you progress to

the next round until there is an eventual winner. If you lose you are eliminated from the competition. With another outstanding performance from the Impact Boxing Academy, the club managed to secure 5 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals! These results again make the Impact Boxing Academy one of the most successful Boxing Clubs in Australia. “I could not be happier with these kids and the way they are performing at the moment. Their dedication and commitment to the sport is truly inspiring. They always give 110% each time they enter the ring! Their results speak for themselves, they are humble in victory and defeat. I could not be any prouder of them and as a Coach I feel truly blessed to have such a great bunch of athletes to work with,” Coach Mark Evans said.. The Impact Boxing Academy will now turn their sights to an Australia v New Zealand competition to be held in Auckland on June 24th.
