Riding to Conquer Cancer THE Rotary Club of Cooroy is proud to assist one of our local paramedics, Gary Lewis, when he takes the challenge in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer 1718 August, 2013. Gary is a local paramedic working out of the Cooroy Ambulance Centre and is busily training to make sure he completes the 2-day, 200 km epic journey. The 2-day ride throughout the Queensland’ scenic countryside will raise funds to benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. The ride is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves for a great cause. According to the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer website, all you need is motivation, a bike and a helmet. The Rotary Club of Cooroy has donated $250 to assist Gary in his endeavour to raise valuable funds for cancer research. Why don’t you do the same? Or better still, take up the challenge and join Gary on his ride.

Water puts a spring in Lavin’s step AFTER sitting dormant after receivers moved in just over 12 months ago, the Cooroy Mountain Spring Water factory should be in full production again next month. The company collapsed in 2011 with debts of about $20 mil-

lion and almost 100 people lost their jobs. Millionaire businessman, Peter Lavin, who purchased Wimmers side of the business last year was advised a fortnight ago that he had been successful in tendering for the Cooroy

Mountain property. Mr Lavin had attempted to purchase the whole company last year but ran into problems when receivers couldn’t deliver the title to the land. Mr Lavin hung in there and is excited about the company’s future.

THE Lifeline Shop at Cooroy will celebrate its 20th Birthday on Thursday August 29 and are asking all customers new and old to join the momentous occasion. Celebrations will take place at the shop at 22A Maple St in Cooroy kicking off at 8:30am with something in store for everyone. Value for money on excellent quality, donated items will be a highlight of this celebration with a massive 50 percent off all recycled clothing items including men, women and children’s fashion. Lifeline Shop Cooroy Manager Deborah Daybell, an employee of the shop for 13 years said she loves Cooroy and the local people. “It is because of this we want to share our birthday with as many people as possible. “Over our 20 years we’ve seen many volunteers and staff have great impact on the shop and its development and

success. It’s also been such a delight sharing the daily life of the shop with our wonderful customers who have played a crucial role in our success too. “We hope our birthday will see these people as well as other members of the Cooroy community join together in recognising this milestone for us, it certainly is a special one,” she said. On top of the 50 percent off recycled clothing items, customers will be treated to morning tea and birthday cake at 10:30am, opportunities to win Lifeline in-store dollars to go towards future purchases as well the chance to win generously donated prizes by local businesses with purchases over 20 dollars. All are welcome on the day including past and present volunteers and staff as well as the Cooroy community who have supported the shop since 1993.

Health & Wellbeing

“We’ll have to start from scratch, so you start off with minimal and build up as you crank up,” he said. “The whole thing was a going concern and had a good market share and then it was destroyed.” “This is a bit more difficult because at least Wimmers was operating at the time when we took over.” But Mr Levin hopes to be up and running within

weeks which is excellent news for Cooroy with interviews already being conducted for potential staff. Mr Lavin is enthusiastic about the business stating, “Water is a thing of the future. We’ll do nutrient water and flavoured water down the track, but it’s a premium water, bottled at the source, with very little processing. We’re quite excited about it.”

news Community partnership is pumping at Cooroy Pool

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards is joined by Bridie Roots at Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club celebrating the heat pump instalation AS we’re reminded how chilly these winter months can be in our beautiful part of the world, some Noosa locals are getting really excited about diving into Cooroy Pool again. What! A swim you say? After lots of discussion and fund raising, the dream of installing a heat pump in Cooroy Pool became a reality a few months ago for Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club. With classes about to resume after a small break, many locals are excited about the heated pool that beckons them. The warmer water means the learn-to-swim

sessions now have a very comfortable temperature for even the youngest children and the opportunity to swim through the cooler months saw great improvement in a number of swimming age groups. The Cooroy Dolphins also have a new coach Adrienne Wilkins, starting in late August who has a wealth of experience in swimming and fitness. The club is excited to see how the swimming programs will be extended with Adrienne’s experience and expertise combined with the benefits of the

heat pump. There are plans to maximise the addition of the heat pump, providing swimming, fitness and health opportunities to the wider community. The heat pump found its way to the Cooroy Pool after the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank hosted a community forum in November 2012. There, locals discussed and then voted on future community projects that would benefit the town and surrounding communities. One of those was the heat pump and Cooroy’s Community Bank branch soon

found a project partner in Sunshine Coast Council. The rest is history and Cooroy Dolphins Club executive, Bridie Roots said it has been an amazing addition to all who use Cooroy Pool. “We couldn’t be more excited about what this heat pump has brought to our club and our community. Not since the club began in 1975 can I say we have been more excited!” she said. “Without the support of Sunshine Coast Council and the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank this simply couldn’t have happened. Their contributions have meant the heat pump ensures provides continuity of temperature throughout the winter season and no longer can we use cold water as an excuse for getting out of bed for our 5.30am squad sessions. The pools solar heating system will continue to be used, but the heat pump guarantees that no matter what the weather we can maintain ideal swimming temperatures whenever needed,” Bridie added. Geoff Edwards, the manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch said he was thrilled the

Cooroy Community Forum has brought about this positive outcome. “When our branch hosted the forum the hope was to find out more of what our Cooroy and surrounding communities wanted. The opportunity to partner council in making the Cooroy Pool heat pump a reality is very exciting and I’m proud our Community Bank is part of this project”, Geoff said. “There are almost 300 Community Bank branches across Australia that has returned nearly $100 million to support local communities just like Cooroy. Our hope is that more people will bank with us so we can keep giving back to our town in ways just like this,” Geoff concluded. The Cooroy Dolphins’ sign on for the coming season will be on Saturday, 31 August from 9.00am to 12 noon and Sunday, 1 September for 9.00am to 12noon. For further information about the Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club, its new pump and further information, phone 5442 6546 or club secretary, Jane Laird on 0437 534 749.

New Guide to Cooroy hits the streets A NEW guide to Cooroy was released and is already proving popular with both visitors and locals alike. The guide includes all sorts of information about Cooroy including maps, a calendar of events, a business directory. The guide is called Kurui which is a reference to the Gubbi Gubbi name for possum from which the name Cooroy was derived. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce produced the book to encourage shopping locally and to highlight the diverse array of attractions that Cooroy has to offer. “The Kurui is based

• 1900’s character Queenslander in town Eumundi • Spacious timber decks overlooking the pool • Polished timber floors, high ceilings, French doors • 4 massive bedrooms, 2 bathrooms + study • Child and dog friendly, fenced yard • North east aspect, 1.25 kw solar system $629,000 115 Memorial Drive, Eumundi

on the old Cooroy Pocket Guide that was printed in 2009 but we’ve updated it and given it a new look and feel that is more in keeping with the town. We’ve already had lots of positive comments and it has only been out a few days,” said Danielle Taylor, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. 5000 copies of the guide have been printed and are already available in various shops in Cooroy. They will also shortly be distributed across the coast to information centres and brochure stands in hotels and shopping centres.

news Everyone’s a winner at Pomona King of the Mountain

COOROY RAG

THE 35 th year of Pomona’s King of the Mountain Festival was a huge success. A new King was crowned with Ben Duffus of Indooroopilly taking out first place in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. It was Ben’s first start on the arduous track and he’d only hiked it for the first time the week before the race so his win was all the more impressive. With 8 categories to the race, it means there is more than one winner to this race. Ben Duffus, Chris Morrissey from New Zealand and seven times champ, Neil Labinsky were the first three across the line and also the first place getters in the Men’s 21 to 39 years category.

Page 4 - Cooroy Rag, August 14, 2013

Emergency Department Nurse from New Zealand, Helen Roundtree took out first place in the Women’s 21 to 39 years category. The Junior Male Category of 13 to 18 year olds was won by Bryce Hegarty from Tinbeerwah with 13 year old Dominica Fitzsimon coming in as first female of the category. The Women’s Veteran class was taken out by Noosa Heads PE teacher, Kim Beckinsale who also joined the elite sub-30 club with a time of 29.02 and the Men’s Veteran class was taken out by Ben McMullen from Sunrise Hill. In hot competition was the 50 plus Master Men’s category with Andrew Town from New Zealand coming in at a very respectable sub-30 time of 28.37 minutes and Maree Laverty from Roma taking out the winners spot for the Master Women. The Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge isn’t all about winning, for many of the runners it is purely about personal achievement. Mark Burton from Burnside was a crowd favourite, being a below the knee amputee that had trained hard for the race since December. He crossed the line with huge cheers and was awarded the Ann Daly Trophy for the most gallant effort. Celebrity chef, Matt Golinski was another competitor who took on the mountain for the first time as a personal challenge. Matt was awarded the Stan Topper Trophy for sportsmanship. The Colin Jackson Trophy was awarded to Zigi Georges and the Bruce Samuels Trophy to Melissa Erbacher. Of course, while much of the focus is on the big race, there are many other winners on the day also. The Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash winners included Will Miller in the Male 20 plus category; John Gavin in the Male 17 to 19 category; Joe Godfrey in the Male 15 to 16 category; Ellie James in the Female 15 to 16 years; Sean Toms in the Male 12 to 14 years; and Sheree Godfrey in the females 12-14 years. On a less strenuous but equally impressive activity, the Cooroy Rag World Thong Throwing Championships saw the Junior Award go to 3 year old Alacya Kennedy, the Women’s to Linda Gibson with an 18.9m throw; Men’s to Mark Newman with and amazing 36.7m; Boys to Noah McGowan with 21.7m; and Girls to Jazz Glen with 9.65m. COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S

Is it cookery or show business?

BOUQUETS to Stan Ryan and Shaun McDonald from the Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initiative Group for all the help they have given me after my father passed away recently. They have spent many days clearing, trimming, loading rubbish up and taking it away. I am forever grateful to them as I wouldn’t have been able to achieve on my own what they have with all the heavy lifting involved. Also thank you to Shaun for loaning me his car for 4 months after dads car was written off in an accident. Community spirit is alive and thriving. Keep up the good work - thank you so much ~ Dianne Jeffery BRICKBATS to businesses that tell their customers that they only opened to run other businesses out of town. Not very community orientated. BOUQUET: The Belli Community Hall Association Committee wish to acknowledge the following tradesmen for their valuable contribution. They are; John Davidson of Davidson’s Sawmill, North Arm; Gary Leis, Carpenter of Eumundi; Greg Schofield, Plumber of Belli Park and Selwyn Watson, Electrician of Yandina. Each has provided an excellent standard of workmanship and provided materials at nil or below cost for repairs and maintenance to the hall. The Belli Hall will continue to stand strong and sound for many more years as a result of their kind contribution.

Tell me, ladies, it would be interesting to know, Are many of you fans of some TV Cooking Show? Do you eagerly cook those exotic dishes, Which the chef assures you will be truly delicious? On TV everyone is a chef, there aren’t any cooks, And book stores are afloat with chefs’ glossy books. Is your pantry chock-a-block with food and cookery necessities, And are your bookshelves crammed full of colourful recipes? Do you wonder as you stir and you busily beat? Is this something the family will happily eat? When you are tired, and the screen tempts Chinese, Indian, or Thai, Maybe you settle for an easy Shepherd’s Pie? Chefs haughtily scorn the bachelor’s friend, baked beans, Or the flavourful delights of tangy sardines. Does Jamie Oliver ever cook hot dogs, rissoles, or chips? Does the word ‘revolting’ ever cross his lips? What about Nigella, the gorgeous Queen of Cuisine, Does she cook as well as she looks, on the TV screen? Does Gordon Ramsay have to yell such unnecessary abuse? Being a chef is certainly not any sort of excuse. Are the kitchens on the screen typical of real life? Is the star of the show akin to a busy housewife? The stoves are spotless, saucepans shining bright, The ladies’ make-up perfect, the aprons dazzling white. Everything is on hand, every modern device, And you have to admit, it all looks really nice. But who has to do the huge washing up, and get things back just so? You can bet your bottom dollar, it isn’t the star of the show! Jim Dunstan

With this stunning scenery at his doorstep, he chose to leave behind his home computer and instead enjoy this local spot with i-pad in hand, hiking up to the lookout point followed by some adrenalin pumping outdoor action sport abseiling down a 35m cliff face! The SEQ Catchments sponsored Youth Category, hoped to capture messages on camera of people’s connections with the outdoor environment and it seems that Bryn couldn’t have captured it any better.

New financial year resolutions

Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club

Sunshine Coast Community Hospice Fun Day postponed DUE to the inclement weather being experienced and expected, the decision was reluctantly been made to postpone our Fun Day to August 17th 2013. We are very disappointed, but in the interest of public safety, we feel it is the correct decision. We look forward to better weather on the 17th. With everything we have planned it will be a fantastic day, so we look forward to seeing you then.

Cooroy Aglow COOROY Aglow will host a Morning Tea Meeting at the Anglican Hall on Friday, 16th August at 9.30am. Guest Speaker Mrs Dulcie Richardson. Admission $6 All Welcome. Ph - Narelle 5447 6482.

We need you! THE Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens need volunteers to help keep our amazing gardens beautiful. Phone Clare on 5442 6424.

MANY of you may have already been to your accountant and are in the throes of completing your tax return for another year. Whether this has happened or if it’s still on your ‘to do’ list, this new financial year will be a big one in terms of the national and global financial position. Life is busier for everyone now than it’s ever been and weeks can soon become months, so why not take a little time now to reflect on the year that was and what could be the challenges of this new financial year? Put plans in place now before having the feeling that your budget will be stretched to breaking point. Perhaps it’s time to make that new financial year resolution? But how can we best achieve that and what steps can we take? Firstly, I believe a realistic budget is the foundation block required a budget that identifies all your expenses, allows for you, your family or your business to have those savings for a rainy day or that unexpected bill and savings

for those times you want to do something as a treat. For a lot of Australians, the home mortgage is the major household expense and yet sometimes that is an area that is not reviewed on a regular basis or included in a plan for the year. Why not take this time to do a health check on your mortgage? Why not contact your bank and ask for some time to sit down and review your options? Options such as mortgage offset accounts, changing to a different type of loan, paying extra into your home loan or even just simply changing the way you pay your loan may see a saving to your home loan. So put that new financial year resolution together, ring your local bank branch and ask for advice and input so that this financial year will indeed be a happy one. If you would like to know more about any of these services, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

A SUBMISSION on behalf of local sporting clubs and community organisations was presented to Transfer Manager Peter Franks recently, which highlighted a number of concerns during and after the de amalgamation phase. Sandy Bolton, who compiled the responses and suggestions of 84 groups and businesses within the Cooroy RSL networks, met with Peter to discuss a number of the items including imminent partnership funding renewals and future community funding. With the Cooroy Memorial Hall project being heavily reliant on a Council contribution to give better opportunity for a successful outcome with Regional Development funding in the next round, it has been a case of

bad timing to be caught in the middle of this de amalgamation phase. Peter advised that any major funding applications to Sunshine Coast Council from groups in the old Noosa Shire could be deferred to the new Noosa Council, and groups should take this into account in their plans. The good news for sports clubs is that maintenance and partnership applications will be processed as normal, and there is no need for concerns in this arena. Peter assured Sandy that the concerns and suggestions within the submission will be relayed to the incoming Council to ensure that there is an understanding of the needs of these sectors of the community when formulating policy and plans for a new Noosa.

Transfer Manager Peter Franks inspects the Memorial Hall plans with Cooroy Project co-ordinator Sandy Bolton

Fertile ground for a growing sense of community AS newcomers to Cooroy (we only settled here a month ago) my family and I have been keen to meet and get to know members of the local community. A few weeks ago we heard through a friend about a working bee at the Cooroy community garden so we thought we would go along and take a look. We feel like we struck gold! From the moment we arrived at the large green site beside the Badminton Hall it felt like we were amongst friends, even though we barely knew a soul. Everyone was cheery and friendly, especially “President Phil” who could not have been more welcoming and down-to-earth. I have to confess when I first saw the six beds that were being prepared I thought

there were a lot of people gathered for such a “quaint little garden”. Then Phil showed me the entire plan for the area and suddenly I got the picture! The plan for the space is nothing short of amazing. This is going to be a lot more than just a garden, it’s going to be a special place that people of all ages will enjoy (and benefit from) for many years to come. It feels good to have arrived at this relatively early stage because now we get to be a part of growing something truly worthwhile. It sounds like a lot of the community has also seen the value in this long-term project. The generosity from local businesses such as Bonnell Brothers, Mitre 10, Sauers and others has been outstanding.

Everything on the site has been donated so far. Someone even donated a container and then painted it as well! It was a good way to spend a Sunday morning. We worked up a bit of a sweat but also had fun and got to chat with new friends around the sumptuous tea table afterwards. My young son, Sam, who is only 4, had an absolute blast! The jury is still out regarding his contribution to the proceedings but he loved “working” alongside all the other kids and says he definitely wants to go again next time. That’s a good sign for the future. ~ Ian Pugh For more information on the CCG check out their Facebook page or contact Phil McManus on 0428 547 499.

SMSF The property connection

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

services include

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management MORE Australians are looking for greater control over their super. There are currently over 490,000 self managed super funds (SMSFs) in Australia with combined assets exceeding $470 billion. What’s more, low returns from many super funds and recent high levels of sharemarket volatility, combined with the perceived stability of the property sector are resulting in more Australians considering buying an investment property through SMSFs. What property can an SMSF buy? If you have an SMSF, you can use it to buy residential or commercial property. Any property the SMSF buys must meet the fund’s sole purpose test, that is, to provide retirement benefits to its members. · Residential – The family home cannot be bought with your SMSF’s assets. However, the SMSF can buy an investment property that is rented out to tenants, who are not fund members or their relatives. · Commercial – SMSFs can also buy commercial property, including your business premises. The property still needs to meet the fund’s sole purpose of providing retirement benefits to its members. So, the return from the property through rent and growth must be the focus for making the investment. Borrowing through super This is generally only available in SMSFs, and strict regulations govern borrowing to purchase property within an SMSF, and loan conditions are different than those for regular housing loans. The maximum loan amount relative to property value will generally be lower, and a range of conditions and risks need to be considered. The pros and cons Investing in property through an SMSF has advantages and disadvantages. · Control and flexibility

With greater control over your super investments, you can manage your financial future to a greater extent through an SMSF. Also, an SMSF trustee has the flexibility to choose any type of investment (including a specific investment property) that is consistent with the fund’s investment strategy and suits the needs of the fund. • Tax savings If you buy and hold property within your SMSF until you retire, it will generally be exempt from capital gains tax and income tax (for any rent received) when your super enters the pension phase. Before you retire, any rental income generated will be taxed at a maximum of 15% and capital gains tax of up to 10% will be applied if you sell the property after one year. • Diversification When your SMSF invests in property and other asset classes, you may stand to gain from the benefits of diversification and increased financial security in the long term. • Costs You may save on investment management fees if you choose to manage your own super, but it can be costly to set up your own SMSF and meet annual compliance fees. And when you borrow to buy property within your SMSF, it generally costs more than borrowing as an individual. • Regulatory responsibilities Managing investment property in your own super fund, particularly where borrowing is involved, requires the trustee(s) to meet specific regulations. There could be serious penalties for compliance breaches. • Viability You generally need a larger deposit to buy a property in super than in your own name. It is generally not cost-effective to manage your own super or buy investment property

through an SMSF, unless your SMSF has a total balance of at least $200,000. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706. THE plan for the Kenilworth showground expansion is set to receive a helping hand, with the Mayor and Councillor Rogerson providing $45,000 in discretionary funding to help with the purchase of nearby land. Mayor Mark Jamieson and Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson visited the Kenilworth showgrounds today to see first-hand how the funds from their Mayoral and Councillor Discretionary Fund will assist with expansion of the facilities. Mayor Jamieson said the land purchase will enable the Kenilworth Hall Show and Recreation Ground Association to grow its current operations, benefiting the Kenilworth and surrounding communities. “Expansion of the showgrounds will provide additional sporting facilities, allow extra space for camping and boost the local economy,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Many visitors park

their caravans or motorhomes at the showgrounds and use Kenilworth as a base to explore everything the Coast has to offer. “These people provide vital commerce for local businesses and are essential to the economic sustainability of the township.” Councillor Rogerson said the facilities are also well-used by a wide range of local people and community and sporting groups. “The hall and showgrounds are used for many public events and sporting activities, including the annual show and rodeo,” Cr Rogerson said. “The association works hard to improve the facilities and increase opportunities for the local community, and has a fantastic cooperation with businesses in the town.” Blair Meldrum, of the Kenilworth Hall Show and Recreation Ground Association, said the group was very appreciative of the funding

and agreed the extra land would help Kenilworth’s economy. “As a community organisation, the associa-

tion greatly appreciates the valuable funding support provided by the Mayor and Councillor Rogerson,” Mr Meldrum

said. We are proud to provide a wide range of facilities which benefit the entire Kenilworth community.”

Bruce Smith Insurance: 25 years in Cooroy

Colour the coming Season

From the desk of Bruce Smith, “The Journey”

I GUESS it’s fair to say the latest journey commenced mid 1980 following a nine year term in Papua New Guinea (PNG) where I held a senior position with a Multi-National company. With my wife Rhonda and son Langley who was three months old at the time we made the decision to return to Australia. Security in PNG was starting to deteriorate at an alarming rate and I wasn’t prepared to take any unnecessary risks. We returned to the Northern Beaches of Sydney where I had grown up and 12 months later made the decision to look at alternatives. Considering a lifestyle change was top of mind as I had found it difficult to readjust to the changing pace of Sydney having spent nine years in the easier paced PNG Environment. And so the Journey began. We decided to explore the options in SE Qld like so many others have done. We took our time doing this and I have to say that when we first drove into Cooroy we were so impressed with the natural beauty. It was a quiet town in those days compared to today and just what we were looking for. We settled on the Cooroy Fruit Bowl, introducing Health Foods & Supplements and operated it for seven years making many friends and acquaintances over the period. The community spirit, the warmth and welcoming friend-

liness of the people, was wonderful. Michael, our youngest son was born in the Cooroy Hospital in 1982. In 1988 I needed a further challenge as I felt that we had done all we could with the fruit shop and decided to sell to locals Ken and Sorelle Christensen. I was involved with Insurers prior to PNG so returning to that field was not a difficult decision. Commencing in 1988 with myself and Rhonda I expected it would take time to build my business to a viable situation. I have to say that the support from the Cooroy Community and surrounding areas has been wonderful. My current team, and we are a team, numbers six. Four ladies and two men (including myself). We are an experienced friendly team and my brokerage continues to register regular steady growth. My philosophy is simple and that is to look after a client’s interests at all times. Client protection is our priority. We work for the client and not the various Insurers. That is a big difference between our organization and direct marketers. We deal with many Insurers to provide personal and business insurance options. We undertake thorough fact finders to ensure that we fully understand your circumstances and requirements and then advise you accordingly on the most appropriate solution. Claims handling is certainly an area that we pride ourselves on. We handle your claim from initial contact and submission through to settlement. We don’t want our clients stressing out having to negotiate and deal with the various Insurers. We are always available to help. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank my many loyal clients both new and old that have supported me over the past 25 years and I look forward to continuing the association. Without your support I would not be in the position I enjoy today. For more information phone 5447 6582.

IT was standing room only at the SPS Energy Independence Day Information session at their Memorial Drive, Eumundi headquarters last Saturday. A legion of invited clients from as far as Toowoomba attended a presentation by Jock Howard focused on getting the best return from solar generators now the cost of electricity has increased by 22.6%. “The cost of electricity has risen by over 75% in the last four years eroding the family budget and the benefit to home owners with solar generators” he said. The problem with annual price hikes is the home owner does not feel pain until the three month billing period after July 1 elapses, September at the earliest” added Dennis Dowling, residential solar power specialist for SPS Energy. “This catches out those not aware of the need to modify energy use patterns ahead of incurring the added costs”. The topics for discussion centred on the causes of unrelenting cost drivers for energy delivery affecting the eastern seaboard of Australia and Queensland in particular. “To rein in costs,

reduced spending on infrastructure maintenance and reliability will have long term consequences for all Queenslanders. Our purpose was to propose strategies that ensure energy savings and security.” Jock said. A demonstration of the hybrid battery backup system used to support the SPS Energy offices during power outages was one of the day’s highlights. Based on a battery set that delivers power to an intelligent inverter /charger within moments of loss of supply it forms part of the possible strategies suggested. “The Selectronic SP Pro Inverter / Charger is one of the few products designed and built in Australia. It has no peer”, said SPS Energy Sustainability Engineer Sam Grant, “It is such a robust and flexible platform that it can meet the requirements of an off grid power application as well as being appropriate for a time of day on grid energy management solution.” The Information Day was a huge success. The lucky door prize, a $50 voucher for spending at Eumundi businesses, went to a local, Mr. Mark Dare.

CONTRARY to what pool owners may have read recently about compliance with the new pool safety laws, they DO NOT need a pool safety certificate by the November 2015 deadline! The truth of the matter is that the only pool owners that need to obtain certification are those who are selling or renting their property. Having said that though, all pool owners are required to bring their pool barriers up to the current standard by the deadline. To do this, they can research the new legislation themselves [it is available at www.cooroypoolsafe.com.au] and then make whatever improvements or repairs they consider necessary. Alternatively, they can make a booking with local company, Cooroy Poolsafe, to visit the property and make an assessment of the barrier after which they will be given a report. This will include recommendations on what is required for compliance. The pool owner can then go about making the changes to suit their own timetable and budget. No further inspection or pool safety certificate is required. It is as easy as that. And to all those conscientious pool owners who have already obtained a pool safety certificate, don’t listen to anyone who tells you that it is mandatory to renew the certificate when it expires. This is not correct. You only need to renew if you are selling or renting your property. If at any time you want verification of the above, or additional information on pool safety compliance, then you can always contact the Pool Safety Council on 1800 340 634. Otherwise, give Cooroy Poolsafe a call on 5447 7737. Cooroy Poolsafe - the name you can trust in pool safety.

COOROY RAG police beat

with Sergeant Mal Scott Suspicious House Fire A RESPECTED Cooroy family has lost their family home after a suspicious fire that destroyed the majority of the structure. The fire started at about 9pm on Saturday the 3rd of August when neighbours heard an explosion and saw the building in flames. After interviewing neighbours and witnesses the fire has been deemed suspicious and extensive investigations commenced with a view of ascertaining how the fire started. A witness has reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the vicinity of the house at the time the fire started and police are appealing for community assistance in solving this crime. Anyone who may have knowledge of this offence is encouraged to contact Cooroy Police or the Noosa CIB. No further comments can be made at this time as the crime is still under investigations. Forensic Fire Investigators from the Police and Fire Service spent most of the following day at the scene sifting through evidence in a very methodical manner with vital clues taken away for forensic analysis. Once again the Cooroy community has assisted police with information that may lead to this offence being solved so please continue to look out for your neighbours and report any suspicious behaviour to the police. Hooning Incident In another incident and on the same night as the above mentioned fire, police are investigating a hooning incident that occurred at about 8pm when a dark coloured (possible dark blue) Holden Commodore Station wagon lost control whilst doing high speed drifting around the roundabout of Mary River Rd and Jarrah streets.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

The vehicle lost control after hitting a guard rail before skidding into a metal light pole resulting in the entire pole crashing to the ground and leaving live electrical wires exposed. The vehicle then went on to mount a pedestrian footpath outside the junior leagues club before skidding across grass. The vehicle immediately left the scene with substantial damage to the passenger side and blown out tyres from hitting the concrete gutter. No doubt the driver has not told the entire truth to others about how the damage occurred so once again police are asking the public to make a quick phone call to the police station so the driver can be interviewed over this matter and taken off the road before he kills himself or someone else. Thanks again to the locals who reported this incident and provided a description of the vehicle to police and due to this information I am very confident of the long arm of the law catching up with the offending driver. Drug Lab in Cooran The Cooran community were surprised to see reported that a drug lab was located and dismantled by police after information was supplied by the public. Local offenders have been charged with several serious drug charges. Community members should continue to report suspicious behaviour such as strange odours coming from properties, blacked out windows and numerous cars coming and going from properties with no obvious reason. Police have various tools at our disposal to verify information and to conduct other intelligence checks which can lead to grounds to take out Search Warrants and get these highly dangerous and volatile drugs off out streets and away from our kids.

news Cooroy Fusion Festival, a fabulous day of free family fun BY all accounts Cooroy Fusion Festival 2013 was a fabulous day of free family fun, thanks in great part to the commitment of local sponsors and volunteers. Chairperson John Dangar said he particularly wanted to thank the Bendigo Bank, through their Cooroy Community Bank branch, and the Sunshine Coast Council for their support. “It’s a great opportunity to connect local businesses and showcase our community’s talents. The first two festivals were auspiced by Sunshine Coast Council, but in 2012 the responsibility for the event was handed over to the Cooroy community. As a committee, we are proud to say that the festival is now funded mainly through the financial help provided by local businesses, and the support of enthusiastic volunteers and library staff, so that the event can remain free for families to enjoy.” The committee is now starting to plan for 2014 and is looking to local businesses who want to become involved and support the festival planned for Saturday May 10. “We are currently planning the program for next year’s festival and can offer sponsors a selection of packages, as well as the naming rights to specific activities,” John said. “By becoming involved early in the planning stages, businesses have the best chance of securing their preferred event, and also gaining long term exposure through our website and very active Facebook page,” John added. This year’s festival included local

speakers and musicians, exhibitions by the Cooroora Woodworkers and Noosa & District Orchid and Foliage Society. There were numerous food stalls, as well as community and market stalls. The Cooroy library offered a wide range of activities for all age groups, and the Cooroy Butter Factory Art Centre kept families entertained with exhibitions and workshops. Voted “Most Popular” on the day were the Smart Pup Autism Assistance Dogs, who benefited from generous donations to help children and families requiring assistance dogs. On the festival day, close to 50 volunteers were involved to make it all happen. Prior to May 11 it took about 20 volunteers over 6 months to plan the festival. “This year the committee is starting early and we already have monthly meetings to discuss the program. The festival is only possible thanks to the support of local sponsors and community participation. There are currently two vacant positions on the committee and we would like to hear from interested community members,” John Dangar added. If you would like to sponsor a festival activity, or join the Cooroy Fusion Festival committee as a volunteer and contribute your skills, please contact Chairperson John Dangar on 0467 551 006. All the action from this year’s festival was captured by local photographer Gina Gale and the photos are now on the website and YouTube channel: www.cooroyfusionfestival.com.au.

Cooroy VIEW Club STORY from one of our Members: As a newcomer to Cooroy I wondered how was I to get to know people? My name is Gwenda McNaught and I had resigned from work on the Gold Coast and had come up to our wonderful Coast to enjoy the sunshine. Just walking down the street and going grocery shopping the people seemed friendly but I would need to take a definite step. What to do? How did this town work? For a start I read the local papers. The Cooroy Rag had an article about a group called the Cooroy View Club. I rang the given phone number and was invited to the monthly lunch at the local Cooroy Hotel in the function rooms. That sounded easy enough! I turned up and walked into a happy and friendly group of women who quickly made me welcome. We exchanged stories both personal and topical. There was a guest speaker who examined a then current issue. This is a regular part of the meetings.

I AM proud to be a Father, a Husband and a Son. They are names given to me that describe the family situation I am currently in, but, by no means, define my ability in any or all of these areas. Just like anything in life, to be good at any of these, one has to work incredibly hard and with relentless persistence. Does this sound more like a chore than an enjoyable experience? Well it’s easy to see it like that, and I for one have been guilty of succumbing to the anger and frustration that goes along with expectations of a male to be considerate, responsible, sincere and passionate. But what has one achieved in life that is worthy of pride and reflection that hasn’t been a test of patience and resilience? And to be honest, through the undeniable love and support of a nurturing family environment, what better way to strengthen your soul, lower your guards, lessen your judgements and open your heart. Coming from a corporate background, I have recently had the privilege of being one of the founders of Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine in Cooroy, and so I have learnt new approaches to consideration, mindfulness and empathy that were previously foreign to me. When caught up in the monotonous routines of our modern world it’s so easy to get carried away with greed, blame, rashness and regret when all we really need to do is stop for a minute and contemplate… what really is the purpose of my actions? Surely to surround oneself with an abundance of love, forgiveness and joyousness is everyone’s eventual goal ... so please, don’t neglect, avoid, ignore or reject the ones that want to bring that into your life. My name is Ryan Steinbeck and I am proud to be a Father, a Husband and a Son. Happy Father’s day to all the other Dad’s continuing to do what they do so well! For any info or questions please contact Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 07 5442 5526.

There’s never been a barbecue like this before the cheap four burner barbecues just can’t do. “Weber also has a better cleaning system and are complete gas misers. They use a fraction of the gas used by the average gas guzzling four-burner barbecue. “By now you would have guessed that we rate the Weber Family Q as the best value family gas barbecue available in Australia today. This is really a terrific barbecue and I could go on and on, but the best thing you can do is track down someone you know who actually owns one and ask them about it.” The BBQ and Fireplace Centre in Noosaville and Maroochydore stores stock the whole range of Weber Barbeques so drop in and see us or phone Noosavile 5473 0023 Maroochydore 5443 7275.

“As you can imagine I’m always being asked which is the best barbecue to buy. These days I tell them what I tell my family and friends: “don’t even think about buying a barbecue until you’ve had a look at the Weber Family Q and eaten something from it. It’s really amazing, the difference is like comparing the latest digital colour TV with an old back and white model,” says Gavin Bedford at BBQ & Fireplace Centre, Noosaville. “I’m talking about what I call perfection. The Family Q cooks the best tasting, juiciest steaks ever, perfect roasts (even the pork crackles perfectly), perfect pizzas, perfect desserts, in fact perfect everything. “I’ve watched Weber over the years and I’ve noticed that they always seem to focus on two things. One of them is quality, they really are the Rolls Royce of barbecues. But the other thing they focus on is developing the very best cooking systems. The Q’s are a shining example. The Family Q two burner cooking system is a ripper and it makes all the difference when it comes to cooking great food with great flavour. Weber have cleverly designed it to produce perfectly even heat across the whole grill when barbecuing, yet, by just changing the settings you can create the perfect natural convection needed for roasting. I think it’s ingenious and it’s so simple! “Like all the Q models the Family Q can cook perfect barbecues fat free, and without ‘food destroying’ flare ups. This is because of its unique cast-iron grill design. The grill causes all the fat to fall harmlessly past the hot burners, something

A game of golf and lunch, a perfect Father’s Day gift

COOROY Golf Club, the only place in town where you can lunch with a great view. Since taking over the kitchen at the Golf Club 6 months ago, Robyn Homan has become very popular with the locals for dishing out great old fashioned lunches, for around $10, including whiting with tempura batter and chips, burgers, rissoles and sausages. Robyn has had extensive experience in the hospitality industry and though she can cook anything from curries to exotic seafood dishes, she believes the most important aspect of her work is understanding what her diners want and catering to that. And judging by some of the regular diners who keep on going back she definitely has that covered. So drop in and say hi to Robyn, grab an icy cold beer from Wayne or the staff and sit out on the verandah soaking up the sunshine and watching the golfers tee off. Rob’s Kitchen is open Wednesdays to Fridays from 11am – 2pm.

IF your love for lawn bowls took you to Pomona Bowls Club over the past few months, then you would have known about a competition draw that was happening there on July 28. The draw was made in front of a large crowd at the bowls club, many of whom stayed on to take in the Pomona King of the Mountain festivities happening up the road later that afternoon. For the record, the bowls were won by John Davies and word is John has already given the bowls their maiden outing on the greens! The sparkling new set of bowls, valued at $500 was donated to the club by the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and then raffled off. Pomona Bowls Club chairman, Jim

pomona Students go “Chess Crazy” at Pomona State School

COOROY RAG

FOR a relatively small hinterland primary school, a high percentage of kids at Pomona State School appear to be going “chess crazy”, and this trend is showing no signs of changing in future.

The school’s Chess Club, coached by teacher aide Max Winch, has been a popular lunch time activity at the school for several years, and intraschool chess competitions have been held since

2010. Students from Years 1 to Year 7 enthusiastically compete to become age group champions in a friendly battle to become the ultimate “Pomona Chess Champion”. Following the popu-

Exceeding standards

POMONA Early Childhood Centre recently received its Rating under the new National Quality Standards Assessment and Rating process. The Centre received an EXCEEDING Rating in all 7 Quality Areas with an overall rating of EXCEEDING National Quality Standards. The owners Cathy & Greg Cowie acknowledge the efforts and dedication of their wonderful team of Educators for this fantastic result. “Our Teachers/Educators love their job and seek at all times to provide a

stimulating, happy and educationally based environment for the children. ” Many thanks to Danielle Bignall, Tracey Worboys, Peta Hempsall, Rebecca Allingham, Kirbey-Lee Suares, Cynthia Brennan, Carmel Allen, Carmel Billiau, Jaymie Robson-Suares, Kristen Davidson, Jade Maddison, Emily Langfeldt, Tiffany Hall & Naomi Truda. larity of these activities, Pomona State School teams have been sent to the Sunshine Coast Interschool Chess Championships. Local community volunteer Phil Willy has kindly provided the students with advanced training in chess strategies and helped coach them for the challenge of these interschool competitions. All this effort paid off in the 2012 championships, when Pomona State School were placed in the Premier A division (within the top 8 schools competing) and half the team gained ribbons for their individual efforts in a later tournament. This year there are a total of 4 teams representing Pomona State School in the interschool championships. These students have made fine

efforts to date this year, and are currently preparing to compete again in August. The school has promoted chess as a valuable activity for all students in their Enrichment Program. According to the Enrichment teacher Kathy Lavender, “Children who participate love the challenge and stimulation. It’s great to see them having fun while they learn new skills, develop good sportsmanship and team work”. The experts appear to agree with her about the benefits of chess, with evidence showing that chess enhances creativity, concentration, memory, critical thinking and problem solving skills, amongst other desirable qualities in developing young minds.

THE importance of riparian health is the subject of a new brochure to be launched by Ian Mackay, Chair of the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC), at a Rivercare Forum 9am-3.30pm at Cooran Hall on the 22nd August 2013. The highly informative Mary River brochure was developed by Cooran creative designer Liz Capelin. As well as highlighting why riparian health is important, the Mary River Brochure also celebrates two decades of riparian rehabilitation in the Mary Catchment, and reflects on challenges faced and lessons learned. Riparian health refers to the health of every living thing on the banks of a natural watercourse. In the Mary Catchment, many threatened plants and animals depend on a healthy riparian zone. These include the Mary River cod, the Giant barred frog, the Mary River Turtle and the Australian Lungfish. The riparian zone is also important in the estuary where mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses stabilise sand and riverbanks, and are essential for many species of fish, dugong, marine turtles and migratory birds. For more information or to confirm your attendance, email mrccctanzi@ozwide.net.au or call the MRCCC on 5482 4766. You can also request a copy of the brochure to be mailed out if you are unable to attend the Forum.

We are passionate about making everything from scratch at Dhoms Kitchen. Our curry pastes and sauces are made each week for the restaurant with ingredients sourced from our own garden and from producers in the Noosa Hinterland with whom we have developed close working relationships over the years.” Spencer and Dhom were trained for several years in Thailand in the art of making curry pastes by one of their cooking mentors, Ajarn Jay. “We were taught the traditional way, measuring ingredients such as garlic and golden shallots using our hands. We learnt to roast spices individually as they each have different burning points”, says Spencer. “The curry pastes were made over and over again until Ajarn Jay was satisfied with them!” Lemongrass, galangal,

Foot Pain? Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Talk to the Experts

health

COOROY RAG

Why is a strong core so important? MOST people have heard of the phrase “strong core muscles”. So what does this actually mean. The “core” is a term used to describe the deep muscles of the trunk ie. the deep back muscles known as multifidus and the deep abdominal muscle known as Transverse Abdominis. The transverse muscle is what is usually being worked with core exercises. So why is the transverse muscle so important? The transverse is different to the other abdominal muscles in that it runs around the body from the spine to the belly like a corset. The other abdominal muscles run up and down the trunk or obliquely. The transverse muscle also lies deeper underneath the other abdominal muscles so it is closer to the spine and more effective at stabilising the spine. The transverse muscle is your bodies’ natural back brace. We know from research that people who suffer from chronic back pain have a poor functioning transverse muscle. In

normal, painfree bodies, the transverse muscle activates prior to us performing a movement, so that our spine has been stabilised. When people have chronic back pain, this does not happen, so movement is occurring on an unstable spine. When the pain goes away, the function of the transverse doesn’t automatically return, it requires training. The transverse muscle can also be weakened by overstretching such as with pregnancy. In pregnancy though, all of the abdominal muscles can be affected by what is known as rectus diastasis. A rectus diastasis is a fancy term for a separation of the rectus abdominis (outermost abdominal muscle or six-pack muscle). This occurs because of over-stretching of the connective tissue (joins the two halves of the rectus muscle). The transverse also connects onto this connective tissue, so a stretching of this tissue also affects the ability of the transverse to work effectively.

So it would be natural to assume that “core” exercises are what need to be done to help this right? Well not always! Some core exercises are great, but others may actually make things worse if you have a diastasis (tummy muscle separation). A lot of women who have had children, especially more than 1, will have some degree of diastasis. RIDE-4HOPE: Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over will converge on the Kenilworth Show grounds Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of August for the Ride4Hope, a two day charity motorbike event raising funds for School Chaplains. Ride4Hope participants will enjoy some of QLD’s best riding with Road, Track and Trail options to choose from. The fundraising event hopes to raise $100,000 to help ensure the ‘Chappies’ are able to continue their important work in schools. In an exciting twist this year riders have a choice of the

school, chappie or region the funds raised are contributed to. This year the Ride4Hope is hosting a huge weekend of camping plus another first – HopeFest ... a massive family friendly Concert featuring JC Epidemic Freestyle Motocross Show, live Battle of the Youth Bands plus other guest artists, Fireworks and more! For further info visit www.ride4hope.org.au or email Chad Monroe: chad@provisionwealth. com.au CAR WASH & FREE DRESS DAY: The Noosa District State High School Interact Club and the Student Council are keen to support the school’s chaplain Shane Briggs, whose hours at the school may be reduced. Chappy Shane is involved in mentoring groups, supporting individuals and families within the school community, providing food and school materials for students whose families are struggling financially and hosting a weekly breakfast at the school each Wednesday morning. Noosa District State High School students appreciate Chappy’s empathy, kindness, generosity and compassion and are concerned about the impact a reduction of his time at the school may have on the community.

Student Council President Emily Quinn said that many students, like herself, look forward to the Wednesday breakfast each week. “The breakfast is the highlight of my school week,” Year 8 student Josh Williams said. “We need more hours for the chaplaincy, not less,” said Emily. The Interact Club have planned to raise funds for Chappy through a bake sale, half free dress day with gold coin donations as well as face painting and song requests (costing a few dollars) on the school athletics carnival held on August 9. A car wash at the Pomona Caltex hosted by the NDSHS Interact Club and the Pomona Earlyact Club is planned for October 19, with all proceeds going to both school’s chaplaincies. The Student Council are supporting Chappy by raising money through a free dress day on Harmony Day (August 21), with donations made for the opportunity to go ‘uniform free’. The official colour for Harmony Day is yellow/orange, so students opting to support the cause are to wear a yellow or orange shirt. Iron and Clay, a band from Chappy’s church will entertain students in the hall on Harmony Day. Chappy Shane has been overwhelmed by the support of the school community.

health At last a health fund claimable weight loss system

COOROY RAG WITH 52% of women, 67% of men and 25% of children in Australia being overweight or obese it is no surprise that weight loss is a high priority for many people. And now weight loss has become more affordable with the new Shake It Professional Weight Management Program which is the only weight loss program claimable on health funds. This system is also now available in Cooroy at Make a Difference Health & Fitness! Shake It is a carbohy-

drate controlled dietary program, incorporating moderate exercise, specifically designed for rapid and lasting fat loss. Shake It encourages the body to use fat as the primary source of fuel by restricting dietary carbohydrates and can assist you to lose up to 2 kg of fat per week whilst preserving your muscle mass. Most calorie-restricted diets produce disappointing results due to the excessive loss of muscle mass. The loss of muscle reduces your metabolic rate (ability to

burn calories) and increases your likelihood of putting the fat back on (yo-yo dieting). Shake It helps to avoid the damaging effects of yo-yo dieting. Shake It is run by Qualified Healthcare Professionals and includes a tailored program for each patient and professional advice to overcome obstacles. It is one of the most effective fat loss programs available and is easy to follow and convenient as it includes healthy food to develop good eating habits and

great tasting meal replacements and snacks. It burns more fat with sustained results, is convenient and great tasting and is individualised for maximum success. Another great tool also unique to Cooroy that complements the Shake It system is a Bioelectrical Impedance analysis test. It is a painless test

that measures many aspects of the body including fat and muscle mass and also how your body is aging and is a great way to start any weight loss program. For more information about Shake It ring Lee or Maria at Make a Difference Health & Fitness on 5442 6179 or visit www.madhf.com.au

Enhance your image with individual eyewear EXOTIC colour palettes are to be expected in this season’s new frame selections, according to local optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod. “Winter in Queensland is different to the southern states and locals are not restricted to the blacks and browns favoured by those from colder and greyer locales in their clothing and eyewear. As well as the current hugely popular retro

black plastic frames seen everywhere we are stocking more vibrant and magnificent colours such as shades of red, purple and orange to complement the conservative neutrals” Jenny says. “Very popular this season is a vibrant red, along with many shades of blue, purple and green. We also have styles with a hint of “bling” without being over the top. Our cats-eye shapes are being sought out by women of all ages who want

something a bit different.” Heather says that “When choosing frames to stock at optometry@cooroy we are also looking for styles or ranges not available everywhere. We are not restricted to a limited selection of suppliers as are many of the chain optical outlets. Our styles are also updated regularly all year round.” Jenny reminds us that “While our clients are primarily looking at the style, shape,

size and colour of their new frames – to be ultimately happy with their new eyewear we offer our professional advice from years of experience on factors of frame fit of which they may not be aware. Details such as bridge fit and position, temple length, eye size, their prescription and lens choice will influence the suitability of their choice for their face and their lifestyle. “It is critical that your spectacles are fitted correctly to ensure you experi-

ence optimum vision” adds Heather, “and we provide complementary life-time adjustments on all spectacles that we dispense. What else in life do you purchase that comes with that offer?” optometry@cooroy is an independent locally owned and operated optometry practice which is located at 62 Maple Street in Cooroy. Deadly paralysis ticks a year round threat MOLLY, a 6 year old Blue Cattle dog from Lake Cooribah, is lucky to be alive. After a trip to the bush Sheri Newton, her owner, noticed she was wobbly on her feet and had lost her appetite. Luckily, Sheri was familiar with the symptoms of paralysis tick toxicity and took the appropriate actions that saved Molly’s life. Paralysis ticks are one of the most dangerous parasites in the Australian bush and pet owners need to be increasingly vigilant with their tick protection regime due to an unprecedented spike in reported tick cases this winter. Traditionally, tick activity along the east coast of Australia was confined to the warmer winter months, however this is no longer the case. Protecting your pets all-year round will go a long way towards avoiding the associated stress and heartache that tick poisoning can cause, and no pet owner wants to experience that.” Signs of Paralysis Tick Toxicity include: Weakness in the legs, especially hind legs creating a ten-

dency to wobble; Grunts and changes in their vocalisation; Rapid, noisy breathing; Loss of appetite; Vomiting, coughing and drooling; Some animals, particularly cats, may become distressed, anxious and confused; Ascending paralysis over a 2448 hour period. Prevention is always the best option to decrease the chances of paralysis tick poisoning. Prevention strategies include reducing exposure to ticks by keeping your pets away from bushy, grassy areas, checking your pets daily for the presence of ticks and symptoms of tick paralysis and using products, such as a spot-on like Advantix, that offer protection from these nasty parasites. If pet owners find ticks, or see signs of tick paralysis, it’s important that they contact their vet immediately. Early detection will not only make a big difference to the severity of injury caused, it will also reduce the chance of tick poisoning being lethal. Molly is testament to that.

Sailing: Race season begins

PLUMBING NEEDS 0438 192 743 5485 3754 BSA 63436

THE Racing Season is about to begin at the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club in Boreen Point. Club racing for juniors, monohulls, catamarans, trailer sailers and sailboards is held each Sunday for members and visitors. LCSC is a family orientated, not-forprofit organization and is reliant on its volunteer members to organise both on-water and shore based activities. New members, both sailing and social, are always welcome to help out with any activity around the club, particularly with the race management side of this. Members are taught basic skills to be able to detect wind direction and set courses for the competitors and to act as a timekeeper for the starts and

finishes. Weekly training sessions are conducted most Sunday mornings by Yachting Australia accredited coaches. During the September school holidays, the Club runs Try Sailings days for adults and for juniors. These days are a great opportunity for a family to come along and see what LCSC is all about and experience the exciting and rewarding sport of sailing. The club owns a small fleet of Vagabonds that make for very stable training dinghies and can easily accommodate both adults and children. The club also has sailboards, catamarans, lasers and skiffs available for learners. The Club holds four annual regattas that attract competitors from all over the State as well as northern NSW. LCSC also hosts state and national championships for many classes of boats with sailors traveling from across Australia to compete. The season kicks off with the Apollonian

Hotel All Boats Regatta on 17th and 18th August. Club racing and training starts on Sunday 1st September. See www.lcsc.org.au for further details or email secretary@lcsc.org.au or phone 54853352.

Star studded performance by Brothers in Arms IMPACT Boxing Academy’s brothers in arms, “Slamin Sam” & Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands both put in a star studded performance when they represented Qld at the recent State of Origin clash. Both boys gave the Qld team a head start with two dominating wins. The state of origin clash was a draw at the end of the night with both states winning 6 bouts each. The dynamic duo then backed up their Friday night wins when they competed at the Fortitude Valley boxing tournament on the Saturday night. Again both boys boxed extremely well & came away with another two crowd pleasing victories. “What a busy week end

for these two warriors! I am so proud of both Ben & Sam for what they have achieved this weekend,” said coach Mark Evans. ”Benny took the fight in the state of origin tournament with a only a couple of hours notice when one of the other bouts fell through that afternoon. That alone is a massive feat in itself, proving once again that these kids always come to fight. Benny is the current Qld & Australian champ & Sam is the current Qld champ & they showed everyone why this week end. To walk away with 4 fights with 4 wins over 2 nights is an awesome feat. “The boys , along with the rest of the Impact

WENDY’S GARDENING crew are now preparing for the National Golden Gloves tournament to be held over 4 days at the

end of August at the Acacia Ridge Hotel in Brisbane,” said Mark. Anyone wanting to

learn to box whether it be for fitness or to compete can contact Mark on 0403 264 048.
