Friendship, fun & getting things done

Front Row from left – Cynthia Daniels (Division President), Jan Jones (Branch Vice-Pres), seated Gloria Balcombe OAM, Raewin Harlum (Branch Vice-Pres), Heather Conlan (Branch Secretary), Irene Aves (Branch Treasurer), Christine King (State President). Back row from left – Patsy Lee (Division International Officer), Joy Coulson, Wendy Bebbington (Branch President), Pamela Minehane, Jean Sandell, Kim Stevens, Ruth Grant, Susie Hart, Shirley Stubbings, Tony Wellington Mayor Noosa Council, Councillor Frank Pardon. QCWA is the most widespread and largest women’s group in Queensland. Together, this active community of women strive to improve the lives of people living in regional, rural and remote Queensland. Established in 1922 QCWA will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2022. QCWA Cooroy Branch held its 92nd AGM last month with the meeting being chaired by Mayor Tony Wellington. State President Christine King, Divison President Cynthia Daniels and Division International Officer Patsy Lee were also in attendance with the group reflecting on all they have achieved over the past 12 months. Fundraising has allowed them to pay off a large chunk of the loan they acquired to purchase the land behind the QCWA Hall from Qld Rail. Cooroy Branch President, Wendy Bebbington, took the opportunity to remind Mayor Wellington of a promise Noosa Council had made some 30 years ago that if and when the Branch had secured the railway land, Council would build some undercover parking spaces for them. Although these women are renowned for their great home cooking and amazing handcrafts,

QCWA is so much more than that. It’s about friendship, about community, it’s about connection. “It doesn’t matter where you live, there’s a way for you to join in the fun, join in the activities, and feel connected to other women,” said Wendy. Much of the QCWA’s work over the past 20 years has focused on assisting drought-affected and flood-affected women and their families. QCWA members have worked tirelessly on the ground, raising millions of dollars for direct practical assistance, such as providing grocery store vouchers to put food on the table, providing store credit or paying bills. No cash payments are made. By helping in this way, not only is the recipient assisted but the money stays in the local community. “I extend an invitation to you to consider joining Cooroy Branch and making a new circle of friends. We welcome ladies with skills to share and join us. We all enjoy chatting and learning. We meet on the first Wednesday each month at 9.30am at CWA Hall.” Enquiries Phone Wendy 54476140 or Heather 0422 328 299.

news All fired up: People with Purpose in Our Community

COOROY RAG Harry Kirk remembers an incident some years ago, while fighting a fire near Noosa. “There was a helicopter water bombing the fire,” he explains. “But they needed some guidance to get a direct hit. We were close to the fire so we could help… The helicopter came in, dumped its load, but missed again. I was on the radio to the pilot. ‘A little more to the east!’ I shouted. On his next run he got it bang on and I think I surprised him with a loud ‘Yahoo!’ over the radio.” Harry has many such stories to tell about his time as a volunteer with the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade. He has been a member of the brigade since it started almost 24 years ago and is clearly just as enthusiastic about it today as he was back then. “It can be really exciting and rewarding,” he says. The brigade was formed back in 1996 in the aftermath of some big fires out at West Cooroy State Forest. “There was an ad in the paper,” Harry recalls, “and over 100 people came to the first meeting.” Harry joined up and has been an active member ever since. For nine years he was First Officer, a position he has since relinquished, although he still remains busy as Fourth Officer, Maintenance Officer and Chair-

man! The brigade has come a long way since those early days. They were lucky enough to be leased 10,000m2 of land from the national parks out on Mary River Road (next to the tip) and Harry (a builder by trade) was very involved in the construction of the large shed that serves as their base today. “All funded through community donations,” Harry adds. New members are always very welcome, and that includes men and women. Harry’s wife, Jackie, has been a member for over 10 years and is now also the community educator. There are currently 22 members (10 of which are very active), and the good news is that at least half of them are under the age of 30. Joining up has actually launched a few careers for young members who have gone on to become urban auxiliary firefighters (‘The Red Trucks’), and, apart from that, everyone agrees that being a volunteer always looks really good on a résumé. For Harry, it’s the camaraderie that makes being a member really special – not just within the brigade but also when assisting “The Red Trucks”, something they do quite regularly, including at two local house fires over the last

Harry Kirk with one of the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade trucks couple of years. “Everyone gets on really well,” says Harry. “And we all look after each other.” Interestingly, in a survey conducted among members, the main reason given for joining the brigade was “to help the community”. It’s also a good way to see more of the country. The brigade is regularly called upon to help out all over Queensland (including at the Wallangarra fires earlier this year and as “a strike team” during the fire season

in Kingaroy), with members also travelling to Victoria, Southern Australia, and even across to WA. In fact, according to Harry, the rural fire brigades on the Sunshine Coast (approximately 30 in total) are amongst the most active in Queensland. “We go wherever we’re needed,” says Harry, adding that “every experience is different.” Anyone interested in joining the brigade can call Harry on 0427 163 224 or

pop along to the Mary River Road station on the first or third Thursday of every month at 6pm. As for Harry, he’s not going anywhere. “It’s such a buzz,” he says. “I never want to stop doing it.”

A Cooroy Pest Control community initiative

From the desk of MP Marty Hunt I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Cooroy Sports Precinct and discussing the master planning with Noosa Council representatives. I visited Cooroy Tennis Club, Gymnastics Club and was able to inspect the other sporting grounds and facilities in the area. Last month I finalised a community and sporting organisations audit to establish the needs of the community and I thank those organisations who took the time to make submissions to me, so that I can plan how I fight for our fair share of priority funding for our community facilities. I am proud to advise I have been appointed Patron of

the Cooroy Golf Club (as well as a ‘hole sponsor’) and I thank the club for the invitation to support them. From my background in running the PCYC in Nambour I know how important it is for our young people right up to our seniors to take part in sporting and community activities. This not only makes us healthier personally but also contributes to a healthier and more socially connected community. I look forward to working with Council, Sporting and Community groups locally to improve our facilities so they can cater for our future needs.

news Bass are in plenty at Lake Macdonald Good to see such a great response to the 17th July story Cooroy Rag did on fishing at Lake Macdonald. Myself and others members of the Lake Macdonald Fresh Water Fishing Club have met so many fishing visitors on the lake, and at the 2 jetties recently - first time locals ,overseas and Aussie travellers who by chance picked up the Cooroy Rag, read the story and decided to give it a try. Only the other afternoon some of the club members having a fish off the jetty met a family travelling from central NSW, and letting their young son Ben, a very keen fisherman, try for his first Bass. We showed Ben how to rig his line and gave him a few live shrimp, and as the sun set, Ben got his wish. You’d have thought he’d won lotto. He and Mum & Dad were so excited. His parents explained to us that they’d sold up in NSW and were looking for a new place to settle. Having met such friendly and welcoming locals in the Cooroy area, and the beauty and variety of things to do, have them thinking they have found their new home. Anglers have been doing well out of the boats of late using lures, as the bass have been really schooling up and feeding on big bait balls. If putting a boat in the lake, remember, no outboard motors permitted. Electric motors , paddle or sail all ok. If over 18 you need a fishing permit, obtained on line (https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/rsa/ sips-dam-and-weirs/profile?dam=lake-macdonald or at the post office. Troy Beitzel was happy with his 50cm Bass he caught using live shrimp with a light float hook around 2 meters down. Bass have a soft mouth so let them take the bait. Don’t panic and reef hard or you’ll pull the hook straight out of their mouth. Lake Macdonald Fresh Water Fishing club formed in 1990 to help the Mary River Cod hatchery, helped supply with catching brood stock, “catch data” working bees and so on. We have been the unofficial lake carers, in the start running fishing competitions, running raffles to raise money to buy Cod, Yellow Belly, Silver Perch and Bass fingerlings to stock the lake. Now we do this in conjunction with SIPS ( Stock Impoundment Permit Scheme ) We’ve been involved in the building of shelter sheds, BBQ area, boat ramps, jetties, car parks, and relocating stranded fish below the lake in dry times back to the main body of water, with a special Fisheries permit. We have also done a lot of work with research, helping Fisheries and other environment bodies over the years. Plenty of fish in the lake, great eating, just soak the fillets in salty water for a couple of hours before cooking. You’ll be surprised how good they taste. If you want to know more about fishing the lake or about our club itself contact, Peter Arch ( President) 0421511813 or Russell Manning (Treasurer ) 0418263898. Happy fishing, Gary Kenzler.

It’s already mid-August and we’re now into another financial year. How did you fair last year? Inevitably some business owners will be smiling, others hoping nothing else will go wrong, and yet another group wondering why all their hard work has amounted to so little profit. Whichever group you see yourself in, now is the ideal time to do a health check of your business. One of the first outward signs of a business in ill-health is its relationships with customers and suppliers. Little things start to slip. Customer requests and orders get misplaced or are not followed through. Quotes and invoices contain errors or are not sent. Suppliers are not kept up to date with changing circumstances and are frequently asked for favours. The word ‘sorry’ becomes a common part of conversations with customers and suppliers. The next sign to look for is reluctance among customers and suppliers to deal with you. Early indications of this are customer orders being limited to items that cannot be sourced elsewhere, where previously the order was for a wider range of items or services. Other indications include a reduction in the amount of contact you are receiving from customers and suppliers, and continual postponements of visits or meetings with them. Financially, cash-flow is the heartbeat of the business. While it goes up and down in every business as customer payments are received and suppliers and expenses are paid, the variation should be kept to a minimum, and the trend watched very carefully. Another important element to include as part of the health check is a reality check. That is, it’s a good idea to reflect on what the business actually is, which may be very different to what you hoped it would be and how you are trying to promote it.

One final check is to take a look at the future, short and long term and realistically assess whether your business is in a fit state to cope with it. The key assessment in this context is to understand the economic and competitive environment your business is likely to be facing and whether the business is ready for the range of scenarios it may encounter. A key question to answer in this regard is: Who are my future customers, where will they come from and what will they want? If you would like to have a chat about your business, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au

news Are you a good bushland neighbour?

COOROY RAG

Residents whose homes adjoin bushland can help Council’s Natural Areas team keep the natural areas in top condition by being good bushland neighbours. “Living near bushland is appealing. It’s nice to look out on and enjoy the wildlife it attracts, but it comes with special responsibilities,” says Natural Areas Officer Michael Lyons. This includes making sure not to encroach on bushland reserves, keeping garden waste out of the bush and reporting anyone seen dumping waste within a reserve. Mr Lyons said weeds and garden plant material, if dumped in bushland, could significantly impact native habitat for native flora and fauna. “Some of the worst weeds in our bushland reserves come from garden waste,” he said. “Using bushland reserves for any sort of household storage, as well as for parking cars,

boats and trailers is not permitted as it can cause damage to the fragile eco systems local wildlife relies on.” Mr Lyons said most residents do the right thing, however some people see adjoining bushland as an extension of their own properties for storage, parking and rubbish disposal. “Dumped garden rubbish, in addition to damaging the environment, creates a fire hazard,” Mr Lyons said. “Importantly, bushland provides shade and protects adjoining properties from the full impacts of severe storms, floods and erosion along waterways and coastal areas. So, residents have many reasons to want to look after our reserves,” he said. For more information about Council’s bushland reserves and how to be a good bushland neighbour, visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/bushland-management

Harvesting underway ahead of Yurol Forest land transfer Yurol Forest plantation timber harvesting will ramp up in August, as part of a larger project that will ultimately protect 2400 hectares of state forest as national park. Council’s CEO Brett de Chastel advised the community to expect temporary traffic delays on Yurol Forest Drive near Pomona, plus temporary Noosa Trail Network closures. “Traffic controls will be in place, and signs will advise of closures to parts of the trail network as required,” he said. It is part of the $3.5 million conservation deal between Council, the Queensland Government, environment group Noosa Parks Association and HQPlantations. Pine and Gympie Messmate plantation trees will need to be removed to allow the area to return to koala habitat. “Plantation timber harvesting practices aim to retain as much natural regrowth as possible. This will allow the area to naturally regenerate. In some areas plantings will be needed to help bring the area back to a natural condition,” Mr de Chastel said. “Just recently Queensland Koala Crusaders and Noosa & District Landcare delivered a community tree planting day to kickstart revegetation at Ringtail State Forest. “The full 2400 hectares of land preserved under this project will protect an important regional wildlife corridor stretching from Pomona all the way to the Noosa River.” For more information on the conservation project, visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/yuroland-ringtail-project

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society

Orchids are one of the easiest plants to cultivate especially in the sub tropical climate on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. There are in excess of 30,000 species of orchids in the world found on all continents except Antarctica. Orchids are broken up into two main groups, the ones that grow on trees (epiphytes) and the one that grow on the ground (terrestrials). Y ou do need to know the difference as they have completely different growing conditions. This is where joining an Orchid Society helps. I have plants growing in my garden some in full sun and others in the shade. They definitely look exotic when in flower. Most of the orchids in cultivation originate in South America or South

East Asia so need a little more care than our Australian natives in the way of water and humidity. Orchids hate being grown in pots but human nature is to control nature so we cultivate them in pots to sell or transport easily. When growing in pots you should repot every two years if you pot in organic potting media such as pine bark as these decompose and block the drainage capacity which leads to root rot. You also have to provide all nutrients and moisture for the potted plants. You often hear (Orchids) don’t need water but they are living things and need regular care. The Noosa Club are hosting a show in Cooroy at the Memorial hall on the 23rd and 24th August. This is always a magnificent spectacle. If you like flowers and have never attended an orchid show do your self a favour and visit this show. Also the perfume will amaze you. There will also be many varieties of Orchids for sale to suit all tastes. One variety of Orchids in flower at this time of year is the Australian Native Dendrobiums, which put on a magnificent display of flowers with a wide range of colours. The Noosa Society meets at the Tinbeerwah Hall the second Saturday of the month at 1pm. Visitors are welcome. For more information contact Linda 0427 570 022.

pomona New footrace dynasty reigns on the mountain

COOROY RAG

Thousands turned out to watch a field of 97 runners take on Mt. Cooroora at the 41st Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge at the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival on 28 July. The perfect conditions for the athletes for the 41st staging of the iconic event saw Mapleton’s Boaz Clark win the men’s race convincingly in 26min 30sec. He looked fantastic as he improved from his sixth-place last year, finishing 26sec ahead of Glen StricotTarboton. The first woman across the line was Reesha Lewis. Initially unsure if she was willing to push herself up the mountain, the Olympic boxing hopeful embraced her fighting spirit once the race got under way. The Beerwah 33-year-old won the women’s division in 29min 49sec, 21sec ahead of Ashild Krige over the 4.2km course. Saturday began with the 2019 Mt Cooroora Zinc 96.1 Prince and Princess Race, which has grown as young competitors tackled a tricky and technical course. The first leg follows the same track as the major race on Sunday. The finishing times were astounding. The winner was thirteen- year- old Hayden Small, with a blistering time of 16:15. The Princess title went to an unbelievable effort from Gemma Richards who is only 10, coming fifth overall with a time of 18:53. Special thanks go to Leslie Saunders, who oversaw the training of the local competitors, and to volunteers who supported this event. With the pop and hiss of steam engines and a full day of events and activities in Stan Topper Park, the stage was set for the big race. Meg Reeves returned to tackle Mt Cooroora in an attempt to defend her title as Queen of the mountain. As the festival crowd grew in size, townsfolk and visitors began to swell the sides of the road up the hill towards the first bend. As the gun cracked at 2.30pm, runners galloped up Boaz Clark Reesha Lewis Memorial Ave to rapturous applause and those Male Open Time 26:30 Female Open Time 29:49 crowding ‘Hecklers Hill’ reminded runners that they Photo Credit: Raoul Slater would be there on the last brutal hill to cheer, yell and do whatever it took to bring them on home. At the top it was Boaz Clark who managed to pass Ryan Crawford, who was first to the base, and despite being passed on the downhill by NZ speedster Glen Stricot-Tarboten, was able to regain the lead on the run back to the finish line, claiming this year’s race with a time of 26min:30sec. Glen finished in second place, 26 seconds behind, with Brian Wilder from Peachester claiming third overall in a time of 27:37. A truly inspirational run saw the Queen Proud Multi Award title go to Reesha Lewis, who battled Sponsors of Winning against Åshild Krige and only claimed King of the Sausage victory in the last section of the race, Mountain King finishing in a time of 29:49. She enters the sub-30 club. Åshild finished in 30:10. Defending Queen Meg Reeves saw out the women’s placings, with a solid effort in third (30:31). The main race sponsor was Bendigo Bank. Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branch manager, Simone Flavelle said, “It remains one of the best opportunities for the hinterland commu• CHEMICAL FREE • ANTIBIOTIC FREE • STRESS FREE nity to get together, and who would have thought a simple bet in a pub in 1958 ONMENT ALL • HORMONE GROWTH PROMDANT FREE • ENVIR ENVIRONMENT ONMENTALL ALLYY FRIENDL FRIENDLYY would see us all here already talking about the 42nd running of the event in 2020? “We must commend Heather Manders, Dan King and the Lions’ team for all they do, and it’s because of our community’s support of the Pomona Community Bank branch that we’re able to keep giving back,” Simone concluded. Other festival highlights included the Nestle 3km Family Fun Run, Reid Signage Sign Service School Relays, Raine & Horne Tug O War, Livelife Pharmacy Skate Comp, True Value Hardware Bike Ride, Pomona IGA Stage and Cooroy Rag Animal Farm. Cooroy Pomona Lions Club would like to thank our funding partners Noosa Come in & “Meat” us Council, Tourism Noosa and all our local sponsors for all your support. COOROY RAG

Fundraising for our drought affected farmers continues to be an urgent issue, with farmers facing record hardships across New South Wales and Queensland. Last year the Cooroy RSL raised over $4,000 for drought affected farmers and this month they have joined up with Rural Aid’s Parma for a Farmer Campaign to raise some more. “It touches home to everyone, as these farmers are the people putting food on our plates. We know it can be difficult to comprehend the extent of drought in a thriving community like Cooroy. However, the realities of harsh Australian conditions and natural disasters are devastating for our farmers and rural communities,” said Cooroy RSL General Manager, Helen Hollingworth. For every parmigiana sold during August at Cooroy RSL, $2 will be donated to Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale initiative! That means that every time you enjoy the most classic of club dishes, you will support our farmers by providing fodder, financial assistance, water, and more! There are also donation tins in the Cooroy RSL if you wish to donate more to this great cause. Come on Cooroy, let’s get behind the fundraising push and make a difference to a farmer’s life.

Dana Gehrman & Band @ The Imperial

Brisbane based guitarslinger and singer Dana Gehrman and her band will take to the stage at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 17 August, supported by Ruby Gilbert. Dana Gehrman has just had the sort of year most musicians can only dream about. Gehrman shared the studio and toured nationally with the legendary Tim Rogers, toured in support of Phil Jamieson of Grinspoon, Australian music veteran Mick Thomas and his

Roving Commission as well as Melbourne’s Motown greats, The Teskey Brothers. She’s graced the stage of venues up and down the East Coast and was recognised as a finalist for the 2018 & 2019 Queensland Music Awards. Armed with her old Fender telecaster and matching Fender amps, Dana takes no prisoners on stage while she brings her 70’s ‘West Coast’ inspired Roots-Boogie to life with more panache and vitality than most

rock ‘n roll men could even dream of. From an early age Dana was inspired by the classic albums of the 60’s and 70’s from her parents’ record collection. 2019 will see the release of Gehrman’s debut album, ‘Find A Way’. Co-written and coproduced with Danny Widdicombe and recorded over three days with The Honeysliders, ‘Find A Way’ is a seventies groove based, good-time record reminiscent of the retro sounds so formative for Dana’s love of music. Tickets: Pre-sale $18 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $25 at the door (unless sold out prior). Doors open at 7.30pm. The Imperial Hotel’s free courtesy bus operates Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm, travelling to Eumundi, Belli Park, Cooroy, Doonan, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, and Verrierdale. Phone 0467 414 171 to book.

The third concert in the Jazz at the Butter Factory series (3pm, August 18) sees the return of respected cellist Dr Danielle Bentley to the jazz fold. Classically trained but with a love of jazz, Danielle’s playing blends seamlessly with the original songs, jazz standards and funky grooves that are the hallmark of the David Bentley Trio. “I grew up in a household where jazz was played virtually non-stop so, even though my studies and subsequent career were classically oriented, jazz comes naturally to me,” says Danielle. Indeed, much of Danielle’s career has been devoted to challenging musical barriers, most memorably with her Restrung Festival - a ground breaking cross-genre strings at Brisbane’s Powerhouse. In addition to her considerable experience in Australian art music and crossart form collaborations, Danielle has worked extensively in chamber, orchestral, improvisatory, experimental and popular music contexts, and as a Director of critically-ac-

While they all might look the same, there can actually be vast differences in quality of spectacle lenses. These differences can affect vision quality, visual comfort, UV protection, aesthetics and even more. Many spectacle wearers might not be using the optimal lens for their visual condition. This can have a major impact on people’s quality of life. optometry@cooroy’s Practice Manager Ray Smith recently visited the state-of-the-art laboratory of family-owned Australian lens company CR Surfacing in Melbourne. He had the opportunity to inspect the facilities and talk to the makers of the supplier of the majority of the lenses the practices uses. Ray advises that “Not all prescription lenses are created equal, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to selecting the type of prescription lens for each patient. “It’s what you don’t see that matters. If the patient only considers price they could doing themselves a disservice when not thinking about other features.” He adds “As a local independent optometry

practice we have the ability to source lenses from a huge ranges of optical laboratories. We embrace advances in lens technology advances and have the freedom to choose from the widest lens ranges. We are proud to be able to provide a customised, tailored approach to lens designs which can provide exceptional vision. We have chosen a lens supplier that allows us to do this.” optometry@cooroy’s dispensing team of Ray, Allanah & Karen understands that for customers the focus is often on the frame selection process and they love providing expert assistance in selecting the perfect frame for everyone. As qualified optical dispensers their focus is also in looking after getting the best lens for their customers to ensuring the lenses are perfect for their individual vision needs. optometry@cooroy has been operating at 62 Maple Street for more than 11 years. Hospice suspends 24/7 service The Katie Rose Cottage Hospice (KRCH) Board has made the decision to temporarily suspend the 24/7 service at the 3 bed Doonan based hospice, pending the outcome of ongoing discussions with State and Federal Government. “KRCH has provided leading practice 24/7 End of Life care for the past 9 months serving 30 patients their families and friends. Those who have spent their last days with us ranged in age from 36 to 98. The service provided by our team is exceptional and truly honours the end of life,” said Carol Raye, Chairperson KRCH. “In June 2019 KRCH gained ‘Accredited’ status. This was a very significant achievement for the hospice team and ensures the ongoing, high quality care aligns with the expectations and requirements established by the National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards. “We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves and prove the cottage hospice model to government. “To date we have not been able to secure the same long term funding the 6 Queensland hospices and outreach services already rightfully enjoy and have enjoyed for many years. KRCH seeks genuine partnership with government to secure the service for the community. The service offered by KRCH can be provided at about one third the cost of public hospital based palliative care. Our business plan has always included a component of funding from the government. “Community support remains strong and for the service to continue we need the involvement of community & business to endure underpinned by a partnership with government at all levels. Our Op Shops will continue to operate as normal, our fundraising & events will continue, the Hospice will remain open with staff, gardeners and maintenance

continuing. “We will continue to work hard to attract enduring funding supported by our community and our local Independent Member of Parliament, Sandy Bolton, and are very confident of a successful outcome in the near future,” said Ms Raye. Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton said the facility is vital for our residents to have a caring space with love & loved ones in their final days. “After securing $110,000 last year from the Department to assist Katie Rose Hospice to achieve accreditation, in the current Estimates Hearing, I have asked for a commitment from the Minister of Health, Stephen Miles, for partner funding from the $17M allocated in the budget for palliative services. “Currently, I am in the process of securing a meeting between the Department of Health, KRCH and myself to look at what will be made available and how this can be accessed to ensure our residents are not denied their choice of services such as Katie Rose Cottage Hospice,” said Sandy. Prior to establishing the 24/7 service the hospice opened ‘day hospice’ services (October 2017 – August 2018) offering support for those terminally ill, and importantly, their carers. The charity initially commenced service in November 2016 taking on an organisational name well known to the Sunshine Coast population. “We wanted to honour the life of Katie Rose and the two nurses who brought the cottage hospice model to the Coast, Sue Story and Terri Clarke-Burrows,” said Carol Raye. “We had the good fortune of being provided with a hospice via the generosity of the Warm Handshake Foundation. Since April 2017 we have been ‘owners in perpetuity’ of our property in Doonan.”

Free seminar for retirees Local seniors can access free legal, financial and in-home care services information, as part of a Cooroy Library workshop during Seniors Week in August. Designed specifically for seniors and their immediate family, the workshop will be presented by three industry experts including a Financial Advisor Aged Care Specialist, a Solicitor and a Community Care Manager. The workshop is aimed at helping seniors maintain their independence and lifestyle in later years. The workshops are very beneficial because of the breadth of information covered, especially

for those who are looking to enter into a contract for a retirement village, lifestyle park or aged care facility. There is also general information about accessing home care services and government-funded support programs such as Home Care Packages. The major changes to lifestyle and living arrangements for seniors can be stressful and that can also affect immediate family. Those with aging parents are encouraged to come along. Cooroy Library, Tuesday 20 August at 1011.30am. It’s a free event but bookings are required. Phone 5329 6555.

Spring Mandala painting workshop

BEFORE

AFTER

Many of us dream of being creative, taking out the paints that may have been put aside for years, the images cut out from magazines that one day may become a painting, to create and explore, to experience that wonderful space where time stops and inspiration fills us! Relaxation and contemplation really allows our creativity to expand and open, to have time and space to do this is such a gift to ourselves, to remember and have fun with our natural creative expression, just like we did when we were children! A day of Spring Dreaming as a Creative Retreat provides exactly this space, with guided fun exercises that help open our creativity as we bring an inspiring theme or vision to life on canvas which gives a wonderful depth and meaning to a paint-

ing, and to be guided in a supportive way where there are no rights or wrongs allows for creativity to open with ease and joy. The Spring Dreaming Creative Retreat will be held on Sunday, August 18 at Life in Balance, 50 Kauri Strett, Cooroy from 9.30am to 5pm. No experience necessary. Cost is $160 which includes all art supplies and morning and afternoon tea. To book call Life In Balance 5455 5050. real estate Granny flat agreements are not just for old people People building granny flats on their properties for aged relatives also need to build a careful legal framework to avoid expensive disputes, according to Cooroy solicitor Jessica Popple. Ms Popple said that many more families in the Noosa hinterland were considering housing their parents in granny flats after the shocking evidence to the recent Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. “The stories of elder abuse in some institutions have made people more determined to personally oversee the care of their aged relatives,” Ms Popple said. “But unless all family members understand and agree on who pays for what, and what happens after the parents die, it can be a recipe for disaster,” she said. Ms Popple urged anyone considering building or funding the construction of a granny flat to seek legal advice about the consequences of the proposed arrangement. She said a granny flat agreement could help people understand their obligations and avoid costly arguments about wills and estates. “A granny flat agreement” is drawn up when an elderly family member (usually mum and/or dad) loans another family member (typically their child and their partner) a sum of money to erect a granny flat on their property or make modifications to their property to allow the elderly relative to live in it for life. The elderly relative cannot then be forced to leave. If the property owner does need to sell the property, they must either make it a condition of the sale that the elderly person is given the right to continue living there after the sale, transfer the granny flat interest to another property or give their parent the “loan” back. There were many things that families should consider though before moving their relative into a granny flat, Ms Popple said. “Centrelink, the Council and other family members will usually have something to say about any sort of granny flat agreement.” “If an adult child offers to build a granny flat on their

land, it will obviously add value to their property,” Ms Popple said. “The money paid by the parents to a child who builds the flat is sometimes seen as an unfair gift by other disgruntled siblings, who argue that they should be entitled to a larger portion of the parent’s estate once they pass away.” Ms Popple said it was common for a “family endorsement” to be included at the end of a granny flat agreement, and that both the agreement and the endorsement needed to be drawn up by a lawyer to minimise future conflict and disputes. Cooroy Legal Centre can draft an agreement to suit your family’s circumstances. Ms Popple said that each family dynamic was different, and it was important to consider each individual’s needs when drafting such an agreement. Contact Cooroy Legal Centre today for more information on 07 5447 7637 or email admin@cooroylegalcentre.com.au.

Pomona Bowls Club crown their kings While some chose to run up a mountain, others blitzed the greens. On a day where the King of the Mountain Festival dominated Pomona, July 28 also saw Pomona Bowls Club doing its part with the Men’s Section holding its annual King of the Mountain Men’s Invitation Fours competition. The weather was excellent and the bowling green was in top condition. Sixty-four bowlers from Brisbane to Hervey Bay took to the green early Saturday morning and played three games of 16 ends. After day one, there were only two teams with three wins. On Sunday, another three games of 16 ends were played. After Game Four, of the competition there was only one team

with four wins and four teams with three wins. On completion of the fifth game there was a complete turnaround on the scoreboard. One team with five wins, and 2 teams with 3 wins and 1 draw each and after the last game, the team of Mark Monro, Darren Maddrell, Geoff Allen and Lew Dalakis were undefeated with six wins which gave them first prize. As the winners celebrated, the King of the Mountain gold medallions were presented by Jo Winter from the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank - one of the club’s longest and most valued sponsors. Jo said their relationship with Pomona Bowls

Club continues to be an important one. “It’s precisely what our Pomona Community Bank is about. It’s about banking profits going back into our community just by locals choosing to bank with us – just like Pomona Bowls Club. Because of the support locals continue show us, the more we can sponsor events as important to Pomona as this one,” Jo said. The Pomona Bowls Club is always looking for more players to take up the amazing sport and will happily accommodate beginners, right through to the more experienced bowler. You can find them on School Street, Pomona or call the club on 5485 1202.

Swimming success for Dolphins Cooroy Dolphins attended the Wide Bay Short Course Championships at Mountain Creek recently with 15 swimmers competing for the club. They finished the weekend on a high with incredible results from all swimmers. The club took away 2 pool records, 32 personal best times, 8 gold medals, 4 silver medals and countless happy faces. A special shout out to Indiana who at 9 years old came away with 3 first places and 2 seconds medalling in every one of her races. Her broker Kai walked away with 6 personal best times from 7 races. With so many wonderful results from the kids we can’t wait for our club season to begin. Cooroy Dolphins will be holding a free Come & Try Night which will cater for both social and competitive swimmers. If your kids have ever wanted to give Swim Club a go this is the perfect opportunity. For more information see Cooroy Dolphins on Facebook or email the club at cooroydolphins@gmail.com

sport Calling all women and girls interested in playing cricket

COOROY RAG

Local women and girls have more opportunity than ever before to play cricket - and they can get a taste for the game at Tewantin over the coming weeks. A series of Come and Try Days for all women and girls 14years and over have been organised by the local Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club. Whether you’ve played previously or are completely new to the sport, you are invited to join into the fun. The Come and Try Days will be held at the Noosa District Sports Complex in McKinnon Drive, Tewantin from 2pm to 4pm on Sundays August 25 and September 8. Experienced coaches, current Tewantin-Noosa Cricket Club (TNCC) women’s players and team mentor Patsy Fayne our very own local cricketer who made her Test debut for Australia in 1968, played 16 internationals and was the first Australian Woman to take a wicket at Lord’s - will be on hand to help you master the basic cricketing skills. With a world champion national team that has also just won the Women’s Ashes, there is a real excitement in Australia with more and more women of all ages joining the cricket revolution. Megan Toohey, wife of TNCC stalwart Jason Toohey, was one of the newbies in the team and was thrilled to be playing cricket alongside her teenage daughter, Claudia. “I’d always been around cricket as both my husband and my daughter played, but I was never particularly interested in playing. I can now say that I love cricket.” Megan said. “I have learnt new skills and made some great friends in a wonderful supportive environment.” Petrina Feuerherdt hadn’t played cricket for 20 years but got involved a year ago as she was looking for something active and social after relocating to the Sunshine Coast. “ I have met the most wonderful bunch of people I could ever hope for and have made beautiful friends for life” she said. Incredible new-found friendships is a common theme that comes up in conversation with the existing Tewantin-Noosa women’s players. It is hoped that in the very near future the Cooroy/Eumundi/ Pomona region can field a women’s team of their own. So why not give it a try? Come along to one or all of these days and see how you go. For more information, phone Paula McKie on 0423 149 477.
