NDSHS students presented with Gold Award

Noosa District State High School students were among 75 young people presented with the highest level of the Duke

of Edinburgh’s International Awards, a Gold Award. Completing a Duke of Edinburgh’s International

Award is a significant accomplishment. The achievements of these award recipients were inspirational and in-

cluded completing the 96 kilometre Kokoda Challenge through the Gold Coast Hinterland and exploring local cultures in Thailand, the Solomon Islands and Japan. The presentation ceremony also acknowledged the long-standing volunteers who have provided many years of service to young people. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award contributes to a student’s Queensland Certificate of Education and it is considered favourably by a growing number of prospective employers.

Cooroy Computers offer census help THE Census night has been and gone but not without frustration for a lot of people. This year the ABS has encouraged Australians to complete their Census online, unfortunately someone had other ideas and the Census website was hacked. As a result of the multiple attempted hacks the ABS shut the website down to prevent data being accessed. Many comments were seen on social media along the lines of “I was nearly finished and the whole thing just crashed”. Fortunately they have given everyone extra time to complete the Census. Australians now have until mid-September to finish their Census online. Many people feared that if they didn’t complete their Census on 9th August they would be fined however the ABS has stated that as long as people complete their Census before the September cut off there will be no fines.

On Saturday 20th August, Cooroy Computers will be running a workshop to help people complete their Census. The workshop will run from 9am-12pm, although the Census itself only takes about 30 minutes to complete. No bookings are required and people are welcome to come and go as they please. There will be computers available to use on the day however by bringing your own, you won’t have to wait in line for a computer. The cost is $10 per Census and you will need to bring your Census form or letter with you because it has your unique household number on it. If you are unable to come to the workshop, Cooroy Computers will continue to offer help with the Census in store until the Census is finished. Cooroy Computers is at Shop 10&11, 1 Diamond St, Railway Square, Cooroy. Phone 5442 5522.

Letters to the editor I REFER to the article concerning “Katie Rose Cottage” in the Cooroy Rag of 03.08.2016. The article is based on misrepresentations and half truths. The board of the Sunshine Hospice Ltd. has vacated the Cottage at Doonan, and contrary to various claims by various spokespersons, has no intention of reopening the hospice at Doonan. In fact they have clearly stated that they intend to proceed with the construction of a “hospital” type facility elsewhere on the Coast, on a non-existent block of land, at some unknown time in the future, at an unknown price. As you know the volunteers who ran the Katie Rose Op-shops in Cooroy and Tewantin have resigned in protest and the shops are now closed. While we appreciate the strength of support in the community for the Cottage, the volunteers had been accepting donations from the community and raising funds through the shops in the belief, both by the volunteers and within the community, that the Cottage would be reopened. It was untenable for the volunteers to continue to accept donations and collect funds from the community under the false presence that the Cottage would reopen. With a restructuring, or the wholesale sacking, of the board it is hoped that the Cottage will be reopened.

A Katie Rose Cottage Committee has been established with that as its aim. You will be hearing more of the Committee’s work in the next weeks. In the meantime we ask the community to hold donations to the Cooroy shop until such time as it reopens, as currently any donations left outside the shop are going to Maroochydore and all monies are going to their “pie in the sky” project. As always we appreciate the community’s support. If you would like to express that support there is a petition to reopen Katie Rose at the Cooroy AMCAL Pharmacy or online at https://www.change.org/p/ re-open-katie-rose-cottage Paul Daly 4 Hall Ct., Tewantin

WE would sincerely like to thank those who supported us while we were trading as Bonnell Bros. P/L. We formed many valued friendships and acquaintances and hope to see you at times out and about. We trust that new owners James and Siona will provide you with continued quality services. Thank you again. L.B.D.&L. Bonnell

Cooroy Freemasons set aside $100,000 for school bursaries

Careless dog owners targeted COUNCIL is taking aim at careless dog owners in the wake of more than 50 dog attacks since January. Local Laws Coordinator Phil Amson says apathy is too often to blame, with dog owners failing to shut gates and doors to stop their dogs wandering. “We’ve issued fines or prosecuted in the case of each of the 55 attacks this year, and as long as calls about dogs roaming the streets keep coming, we will keep taking a hard line.” Council last month prosecuted the owner of three dogs that wandered more than a kilometre before attacking and injuring a cattle dog on private property at Cooroibah. The three dogs’ owner, one of two to face court, received a $2000 fine and was ordered to pay $342 in court costs. “In most cases of wandering dogs when we carry out checks on the owners’ yards, the gates are working as they should – owners simply aren’t bothering to shut them. It’s frustrating. Wandering dogs attract fines in excess of $230, plus impoundment charges, and that’s before any court action. It is every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal does not pose a risk to other people or pets.”

The Cooroy Queen Alexandra Freemasons have been awarding annual bursaries for academic excellence to Cooroy State School, Eumundi State School and Noosa District State High School for many years. The committee recently voted to hand over $100,000 to the United Grand Lodge Qld’s Board of Benevolence to be held in trust to ensure that the distribution of these bursaries continue indefinitely. Pictured: Rick Templeton (President) and Bob Carmichael (Director of Ceremonies) The Cooroy Queen Alexandra Freemasons is actively seeking new membership. The Cooroy Freemason Branch was established in 1911. Freemasonry is a large fraternal global organisation that promotes moral and personal development amongst its members. Steeped in tradition the society’s core values include caring for others, helping those in need and acting with honesty and integrity. Freemasonry offers a unique and rewarding experience to men from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion or social status. One of the organisation’s mottos is “Making good men better”. Like many membership organisations, there are certain prerequisites that potential members

must satisfy when applying to be a Freemason. To become a Freemason a person needs to be a Law abiding person over the age of 18; have a belief in a Supreme Being; and have made his decision to join Freemasonry by his own free will and not for any personal gain or reasons of idle curiosity. As Freemasonry offers many unique benefits, these prerequisites ensure that those who join get the most out of becoming a Freemason. The Cooroy branch offers men a great support group as well as a social outlet and networking opportunities. They meet once a month on the first Thursday at 7pm. If you are interested in joining the Cooroy Freemasons phone Rick Templeton on 5442 8887 or find them on Facebook Cooroy Queen Alexandra.

A UNIQUE opportunity to share the experiences of Australians who fought in Vietnam will be available to people on the Sunshine Coast this month. The Cooroy Pomona RSL has created an exhibition (next to the Cooroy community hall) which will be on show until August 21 to mark Australian involvement in the Vietnam War and the 50th anniversary of famous Battle of Long Tan on August 18. “We want the exhibition to give people an insight into a conflict where 521 young Australians were killed and more than 3000 wounded and which stirred national controversy and debate,” Cooroy Pomona RSL president, Ian Whisker, who is a Vietnam veteran. Special guest was Lieutenant Colonel Harry Smith who commanded D Company at Long Tan. He officially opened the exhibition on August 11. The Battle of Long Tan involved 108 ANZACS against a Viet Cong (North Vietnamese) force estimated between 1,500 and 2,500. The Australian War Memorial records that: “The battle was one of the heaviest conflicts of the Vietnam War as well as one the few battles in the recorded history of the world to be won against such odds.” There were 18 Australians killed - 17 from D Company and one from the 1st Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron - and 21 wounded.

The exhibition, open each day from 10 am to 4 pm and free to the public, will be set in shipping containers covered in camouflage netting to give an impression of a military headquarters in the field. Visitors will see displays showing the history of Vietnam and the involvement of Australia and the United States. Highlights will be photographs and personal recollections of members of the Australian Army, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy who fought in the conflict. A theatrette in one of the containers will show videos and documentaries. Mr Whisker said that it was an important event for Australians to better understand a War that still impacts Australian society today because of the physical and mental trauma suffered by many veterans. “It is a matter of shame for our nation that many veteran continue to suffer mental stress from their service in Vietnam and for the treatment they received upon returning to Australia. The extended impact damaged relationships, families and children and we see it as a priority in the RSL to work with veterans and their families,” Mr Whisker said. Sunday 21st August: Vietnam Veterans Day Memorial Service 10am - Memorial Service, Cooroy War Memorial, Diamond Street, Cooroy Tour of Exhibition 12.30pm - Lunch at the Cooroy RSL and Citizens Memorial Club for Vietnam Veterans and their partners and invited guests.

The National Broadband Network (nbn) is a high speed broadband network designed to reach 100 per cent of national premises and provide the communications infrastructure to prevent Australians from falling behind in an increasingly online world. nbn is committed to delivering leading edge broadband services to all Australians by leveraging the three available types of technology – fixed line, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location. As part of the fixed radio (wireless) component of the Network, nbn is proposing to upgrade the existing nbn™ Radio Network Base Station located at 743 Eumundi Kenilworth Road, Belli Park QLD 4562 (Lot 164 on Lot MCH1708) to provide high quality wireless broadband services to customers in the surrounding locality. Proposed works at the existing facility will involve the removal of one (1) existing panel antenna and the installation of one (1) new panel antenna (1180mm in length), at an approximate elevation of 40 m. This will also involve the installation of ancillary equipment, including: one (1) new Remote Radio Unit (RRU) located behind the installed antenna, one (1) associated hybrid feeder and one (1) new NBN canister mounted at an approximate elevation of 39 m. Associated equipment is to be housed within one (1) new BBS outdoor equipment cabinet (total base area less than 7.5m2), situated at the base of the facility. nbn regards the proposed installation as a Low-impact Facility under the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997. As such, it does not require planning approval from Sunshine Coast Council. Further information on this specific proposal can be obtained from Ellen Thompson on (07) 3173 8395.

Cooroy Patchwork group members with ‘Gypsy’ in Warwick SOME very enthusiastic members of our local Patchwork group decided to have some fun in Warwick by dressing a tree at their annual Jumpers and Jazz Festival. The theme this year was Bohemian. Thus was born Gypsy, the Very Patchy Lady from Cooroy, a wonderful, quirky young lady built around tree no. 69 in the main street. We failed to get a nod from the judges, but lots of people heard about Cooroy and

she had her photo taken by many visitors to the Festival. We also heard many lovely comments from all who viewed her. Well done to all the willing workers, especially those who made the journey to Warwick to construct Miss Bohemia of Cooroy. You can view Gypsy in the window of Cooroy Drapery for the next couple of weeks.

Spotlight on stormwater COUNCIL will inspect privatelyowned stormwater treatment systems next month to check they’re working correctly. “Bio-basins, rain gardens and other stormwater filters remove nitrogen and other pollutants from run-off before it reaches our waterways,” says Council’s Planning and Environment Manager Kerri Coyle. “The sand and plants used in these devices do a good job of filtering run-off from roofs, car-parks and other paved areas, but they need to be maintained to be effective.” Council is contacting property owners to arrange inspections. Inspectors will provide advice and check for problems.

Ms Coyle said property owners had to maintain their systems as a condition of Council approval. Newer commercial and industrial developments of more than 2500sqm typically have stormwater systems in place. “Staff have finished reviewing Council-owned stormwater devices so we can now look at privately-owned ones,” Ms Coyle said. Council has written to owners to remind them of maintenance requirements. The inspector may ask to see copies of maintenance records. Ms Coyle said owners should have these ready. Property owners can email these to Council ahead of the inspection, via mail@noosa.qld.gov.au

ROTARY and disaster relief charity ShelterBox renewed a three-year agreement to provide immediate, lifesaving assistance to survivors of natural disasters and conflict. ShelterBox is an independent, not-for-profit charity recognised by the ATO as able to give tax deductions for donations received. The Rotary Club of Cooroy joins with Rotary clubs worldwide to provide immediate relief to thousands of displaced people quickly and efficiently with ShelterBox. Andrew Aves, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said: “The partnership between Rotary and ShelterBox has provided a place of refuge to people facing some of the most difficult and uncertain moments in their lives The Rotary Club of Cooroy is delighted this project has been renewed and it enables us to reach out to families in distress and to honour our ongoing commitment to help communities devastated by disasters and conflict.” Last year students at the Pomona State School raised $230 for ShelterBox that, together with generous contributions from Cooroy residents and visitors at the Cooroy Fusion Festival, enabled the Rotary Club of Cooroy to donate a Shelterbox. Claudia Andersen, International Director for the Rotary Club of Cooroy said: “Rotarians volunteer to help deploy the shelter boxes when disaster strikes. Each ShelterBox container typically provides a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, along with regionally appropriate supplies such as a water purification kit, blankets, tools, solar lights, and other necessities to help a family survive for six months or more after a disaster. This is an incredibly worthwhile initiative which we wholeheartedly support. Our local schools and students have actively raised money for this project.”

No Parliament 13 weeks – the country still ran I searched the media today, to see if I could find, Something pleasant in the world to humour my tiny mind. But apart from the opening of the Olympic Games, The brightest thing that I could find was the Olympic Flame. The US election was depressing with Hillary and Trump at war, Nobody knows what’s going on, with arguments galore. Americans are scared that Trump will be the country’s top VIP, While many are just as scared that Hillary’s not their cup of tea. The middle East is a disaster, no sign of a nearing peace, And unrest in Europe with violence on the increase. China, Japan and Korea, are circling like fighting cocks, Most other countries are sadly on the rocks. Even Brazil with the Olympic Games are wondering how they’ll pay for them, With the country’s approaching mayhem. We can’t laugh at anyone else, our pollies are in unchartered waters, There seems to be much changing of horses among the usual supporters. Our Government doesn’t seem to know, such confusion has never been seen, They don’t know when they’re going, and they’re not sure of where they’ve been. An economist is someone who can tell you tomorrow, why what was forecast yesterday didn’t happen today. Jim Dunstan

REPORTING a pothole, graffiti and a host of other issues to Council just got easier, thanks to the Snap Send Solve smartphone app. Locals can use the app to snap a picture and send details to Council at the touch of a button. Noosa Council CEO Brett de Chastel said the app made it easier for residents and visitors to raise issues online. “In addition to photos, smartphone users can also add location details using the phone’s GPS,” Mr de Chastel said. The Snap Send Solve app is free to download on both iOS and Android devices. “Whether reporting a pothole, graffiti, broken playground or litter issue, the app makes contacting Council easier,” he said. Requests lodged via Snap Send Solve are sent direct to Council’s customer service team. “There is no need to sign up for an account in order to submit a request, however it is a good idea to include contact details so we can provide updates or ask questions,” Mr de Chastel said.

THIS column highlights an issue that some in our hinterland community are already sadly experienced with - and it’s happening more often. Identity theft occurs when someone, without your knowledge, acquires your personal information and uses it to commit fraud in order to steal money or obtain other benefits. The consequences can be both financially and emotionally devastating. Criminals may obtain your personal information through a variety of methods. It can be as simple as using ID from a stolen wallet or purse, intercepting mail, stealing sensitive information from your rubbish, gathering details stored on computers or shared on social networking sites, or even through public record. Once stolen, there are a number of ways identity thieves can use your information. They may use credit card details to make purchases, or as supporting documents to obtain even more information in order to establish new bank accounts and take out loans in your name, running up huge debts.

There are some simple tips we can all take to protect our identity. • Don’t do internet banking on a public computer. Ensure that all passwords are hard to guess, and that your home computer has adequate protection. • Lock your letterbox and shred sensitive mail before throwing it out. • Always be suspicious if anyone asks you to divulge your personal information, and remember that the scammers may use an elaborate and convincing story. A legitimate financial institution will never send you an email asking you to follow a link, so don’t be tricked. And, if you are contacted by someone claim-

ing to be from a bank, ask for their contact details and call them back – however always use the telephone book or a bank statement to obtain the phone number, don’t rely on the number provided by them, or sent in an email. There are a number of websites which can help you protect against identity theft, or deal with it once it has occurred. Try www.scamwatch.gov.au, h t t p : / / www.bankers.asn.au or www.mycreditfile. com.au For further information about identity theft, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. news Self-employed workers lack retirement savings

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* ALMOST 25% of selfemployed Australians have no money in super. See how this could be impacting you and how to get ahead. Many self-employed workers run the risk of not having enough savings to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in retirement, research by the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has found. The industry body highlighted that while super was compulsory for most wage and salary earners, it wasn’t for those who were self-employed, and as a result 22% of selfemployed workers had no super. If it’s something that’s crossed your mind, here’s some info around super for self-employed people, the annual budget amount you’re likely to need in retirement, and what incentives there are to actually make contributions. How do self-employed workers stack up? Statistics show: • Almost 25% of all selfemployed workers don’t have any super • Around 75% of self-

employed workers, who don’t have a qualification, have little or no super • The average super balance of a 60 to 64 year old self-employed worker is $129,120 while it’s $287,577 for a wage/salary earner. ASFA figures show individuals and couples, around age 65, currently need an annual budget of $42,893 and $58,922 respectively to fund a comfortable lifestyle in retirement, assuming they own their home outright and are in relatively good health. If you think you don’t need to worry about super in order to fund a comfortable retirement - perhaps you have significant business assets or are relying on your eligibility for the government’s Age Pension - it’s worth crunching the numbers and giving it some thought. Alone, the Age Pension is unlikely to be enough and many self-employed Australians may not have large enough business or financial assets to sustain the lifestyle they have become accustomed to. What are the benefits

if I contribute? For the majority of Australians who earn a wage or salary, their employer will make a compulsory payment of 9.5% of their pay into their super, under what’s called the Superannuation Guarantee. While self-employed workers are not bound to make super payments under this scheme, there are still incentives to make contributions to a nominated super fund. We’ve listed these benefits below and to learn more about how to make contributions, you can check out the MoneySmart info page h t t p s : / / w w w. m o n e y smart.gov.au. Generally speaking, most self-employed workers (that is, those who don’t earn 10% or more of their income working for an employer), can claim a full tax deduction on any before-tax super contributions they make under age 65, or between 65 and 75 if they meet work test requirements. This means contributions are taxed at 15%, or 30% for those earning over $300,000, rather than at

personal income tax rates, which is the rate of tax applied to your income. Meanwhile, contributions may attract extra tax if they exceed the concessional contributions limit, which the government is proposing to reduce from next financial year. The government will match certain contributions If you earn less than $51,021 per year and make after-tax contributions to super, you may also be eligible for the super co-contribution payment, where the government will match your contribution up to a certain limit, unless you have claimed your contribution as a tax deduction. CGT relief can work in your favour if you’re a small business owner When you come to sell your business assets as part of your retirement planning, not only are there capital gains tax (CGT) exemptions for eligible small businesses, certain contributions to your super will not be counted towards your after-tax super contri-

butions cap. 1 What this means is you may be able to contribute an additional amount to super, with the lifetime CGT Cap for small businesses currently $1,415,000 per eligible individual. Tax Tax Tax By Seb Vecchio principal CJTaxation Services NO other 3 letter word conjures up as much anger, frustration as any other word in the English language. Even more so this current tax season with a number of changes introduced by the Federal Government and administered by the Australian Tax Office. Some of the changes that are causing taxpayers the most grief this year are: Fly in/Fly out • Removal of the zone allowance for fly in/fly out or drive in/drive out taxpayers. This measure alone has seen some refunds fall by $1173; Net medical expenses tax offset • Removal of the net medical expenses tax offset. This was an amount used to reduce tax payable. It was calculated at 20% of the excess of medical expenses over $2218 for most taxpayers. Those with children and hefty orthodontics expenses have sorely missed this claim; Car Claims • Cents per kilometre rate reduced from 77c to 66c. If you used your car for work related purposes (not including home to work) this effectively reduced your allowable deductions by up to $550. Some employers have continued to pay an allowance based on the old rates causing an unexpected tax bill for some employees. Mobile phones, landline & internet • The ATO have advised they are scrutinizing more tax returns then ever before. They are paying particular attention to telephone (mobile and landline) and internet claims this year. If

you are claiming less than $50 for these expenses, then more likely then not, you will not be on the ATO radar, however, claims in excess of this may not be so lucky. If you are claiming more than $50 the ATO expects you to substantiate your claim. If you are keeping a diary the ATO use the following as “safe harbour” claims (in short, the ATO will accept this as substantiation and you should be safe from penalties). $0.25 for work calls made from the taxpayer’s landline; $0.75 for work calls made from a taxpayer’s mobile; $0.10 for texts messages sent from the taxpayer’s mobile. If you don’t keep a diary and you want to claim more, the ATO will accept you picking a month, going through and highlight work related calls and using this as a basis for an annual claim (note you must do this every year) As you can see the Federal Government and the ATO are making it more and more difficult for individuals to receive the big refunds they may have received in the past and this year in particular has seen the most impact with all of the measures happening at the same time. The above is just a general discussion, you should talk to your accountant to discuss your own situation. Seb and his friendly staff are also available for you to meet with to discuss your situation. You can call them on 5442 6679.

With Spring fast approaching the DIY projects that have been in hibernation over winter are about to get rolling again. Spring and summer are common home renovation seasons, with the longer days and warmer weather it’s a good time to get home projects under way. However, with small or large remodelling projects comes the chance to make stressful mistakes that can cost you money. DIY electrical work is not only illegal but can cause dangerous electrical faults or even fires, causing serious damage that isn’t covered by insurance. An experienced electrical contractor should be able to work alongside this summer’s DIY projects, provide valuable knowledge on today’s power saving technics and ensure your project isn’t going to burn the house down, or a hole in your pocket. When planning a renovation take the time to visit your local electrical wholesaler for ideas. LED lighting is a great way to light all kinds of areas and provide a classy finish while being affordable and energy efficient. There are also some great ideas for power points throughout the house with built in USB ports to charge devices. J Mack Electrical are experienced in all types of electrical installations and repairs, with a focus on making your property electrically safe and energy efficient and providing quality workmanship. For free advice or to get Jim over for a quote call J Mack Electrical on 0432 057 619 or 5486 6613 before you start your project.

NOOSA District State High School and Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens have come together in a joint venture to further educate the students in the art of propagation of plants. The students participating in the agriculture classes, over the years, have taken out many awards, at local shows, such as the Pomona Country Show held in September each year. Their displays of the vegetables grown in the schools gardens under the watchful eye of the agriculture teacher Mr John Masterman, have taken out first place in most of these shows. Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens where desperate for an area to on grow all the plants that they where propagating towards their Annual Plant Fair held at the Noosa Botanic Gardens on Sunday the 4th September at Noosa Botanic gardens. The chance meeting of the agriculture teacher and a member of the FNBG garden club, has formed a partnership that is benefiting both or-

ganizations. With an area at the school not fully utilized, the students now have a further 4 hours a week, learning to propagate from plant cuttings, the on planting of root stock, and the care of the plants as they grow. This is all under the supervision of John Masterman and two of the most knowledgeable members of FNBG plus 2 other members to assist each Wednesday morning. These FNBG members plus a futher 15 others also give up their time on Thursday mornings to help maintain the Noosa Botanic Gardens. The Friends of Noosa Botanic gardens have had the privilege of passing on their knowledge as well as the use of the facilities. All of these facilities ie, propagating sheds, shade houses and hot houses, are what the members of FNBG are hoping they will eventually be able to obtain for the gardens so they can successfully carry on propagating and on growing plants to enhance the beautiful botanic gardens. All in all it is a win win for both organizations.

NDSHS athletics carnival THE Noosa District State High School athletics carnival was held last Friday, with students showcasing their track and field talents in a variety of events as well as great school and house spirit. The NDSHS athletics carnival was held on a perfect, unseasonably warm winters day, with jumpers and jackets quickly discarded and those in ‘onesie’s’ and full-body mascot suits regretting their choice of attire. Students wore a variety of creative costumes, with many opting to come to school as superheroes or villains, the official theme of the day, whilst others adorned their bodies with their house colours. The Pomona junior school campus, joined the senior school campus at Cooroy for the day, with the staff and students enjoying the opportunity for the school to come together as one. Students took advantage of the variety of events on offer, including high jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin and running competitions, as well as contests for the best dressed and loudest war cry. School spirit was on show with students cheering on their peers as well as supporting those across all year levels, and everyone was encouraged to give the events a go, just for the fun of it and to earn points for their house. The Student Council offered a hair colouring service for the price of a gold coin, with all funds donated to the Devaney family. The Interact Club also ran a sausage sizzle, with the support of the Cooroy Rotary Club. Students were spoilt for choice with food options, with the canteen selling ‘red food’, including soft drinks, lollies, Dagwood dogs and sushi, which was quickly burnt off with all the activity on the school oval. A fun day was had by all.

Players are wanted for the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club - both girls and boys born 2012 to 2014. No previous experience required. Training day sign ons - Thursdays for all ages 4pm to 5.20pm or visit www.dragonsrugbyunion.org.au Match days - Saturday mornings You don’t have to pay anything until February 2017

SUNSHINE Coast residents looking for a unique night out need look no further than the upcoming Cooran State School Winter Ball fundraiser. Tucked away in the Noosa Hinterland, Cooran is a community that celebrates a diversity of artists and performers once a month at its famous acoustic night in the century-old Cooran Hall in King St. From 7pm till midnight August 20 the beautiful venue will again set the scene for an evening of live music as local band The Catbirds, featuring DJ Spiderwebb perform. Locals are invited to dress up and give the timber boards a beating as they dance the night away to a diverse set of cover tunes designed to reinvigorate your best (or worse) dance moves. Match your moves with your get-up. Dress formal, old or new, kitsch or classic and get ready to enjoy a great night out socialising, dancing and all things music. Patrons can also enjoy a silent auction, lucky door prizes, finger food and bar beverages.

Funds raised will assist students attending the annual Cooran school trip to Canberra where students visit landmarks such as the Australian War Memorial and Parliament house to review their studies of Australian history and politics and its relevance to modern Australia. Local residents can utilise a courtesy bus to get to and from the event. Pre-booking is essential to secure a

five dollar per trip ticket. Phone Belinda Sparkes on 0408 113 358. Limited tickets for this special occasion are available and will not be sold at the door. Tickets cost $20 per adult. dining & entertainment Hilarious yarns by storyteller musician Jan Wositzky

COOROY RAG

JAN ‘Yarn’ Wositzky, Storyteller Musician, will be at the Cooroy Butter Factory on Friday 2nd Sept - 6:30pm for 7:30 pm start - cash bar available. $20/$15 concession. Some say the art of telling a story is a dying art, but Cooroy locals are in for a treat when renowned storyteller and musician Jan ‘Yarn’ Wositzky comes to perform at The Cooroy Butter Factory on Friday 2 September with an evening of songs, music and stories. A founder of the famous Bushwackers Band, Jan is now in his 45th year on the stage, with one man shows that seque from music to stories to characters, yarns and poetry and songs accompanied on frailing style 5-string banjo, harmonica, bodhran, spoons and bones. And he always coming up with something new and surprising to add the national story, with original songs and stories as well as tales gathered performing throughout Australia and overseas, as well as making books and documentaries for radio and television. So expect hilarious tales of kanga-

roo tails and how Jan inveigled his way into Kerry Packer ’s house, poetry from Queenslander writer Don Henderson and a spellbinding tale of World War One from the archives of Bill Harney (who happens to be buried in Buderim), much material that speaks of Jan’s love of this land and his times with Indigenous people, and his take on Gallipoli with the great Turkish poet, Nazim Hikmet. Jan came to Australia aged five, with his Czech and Scots parents, grew up on Scottish music and dancing, and learnt storytelling from his Czech family who regaled him with tales of their escapades as refugees after World War Two. (Jan also learnt to spin a yarn from joke telling sessions down the back of the school bus.) And, Jan loves to entertain, so audiences can expect a dynamic mix of song, story and theatre that goes to the heart of this land – political, humorous, outrageous and poignant. All in all, he’s probably not worth missing!

Pam Walpole exhibition

THIS aptly named exhibition by much-admired artist Pam Walpole is open until August 28 at Lasting Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth. Pam’s fascination with the countless ways in which water and everything in, around and beneath it, combine with light to create dramatic images is the hallmark of her most recent work. Inspired by the estuaries, creeks and mudflats in Southeast Queensland, Pam set to work. Her characteristic bold and assured brushwork, dominated by her favourite colour blue, speaks to all of us who ever went for a stroll along a river. ‘It’s the reflections that attract me – abstract patterns, light and colour plays on the surface of lagoons, rivers and waterholes,’ muses Pam. ‘I tried to condense all these varied impressions in my new work.’ What transpired from these musings are striking canvasses and works on paper capturing the essence of Pam’s deeply-felt insight into her surroundings. ‘This is a delightful collection of Pam’s work,’ says Kaye Cathro, director of Lasting Impressions Gallery. ‘Each work has the freshness and immediacy of actual, recent experience. It is a pleasure to present this collection to the discerning art collector.’ The exhibition can be previewed on the gallery’s website www.lastingimpressionsgallery.net.

EVERY WEDNESDAY

Legendary singer-songwriter Mike McClellan comes to the J Theatre in Noosa on Saturday 10 September, featuring songs from his latest album Dancing In The Rain, his second in three years. 2015 marked the 40 th year since Song And Danceman was a national hit and voted Song Of The Year, and his songs have earned him an honoured place in the history of Australian music. And you’ll still hear Song And Danceman, The One I Love and Rock’n Roll Lady on radio. Between 1972 and 1980 Mike released 6 albums of which 2 went gold and many of his songs were covered both here and overseas. He compered his own ABC TV series and toured extensively both in Australia and overseas. By the time he released his Heartland album in 1989 he had quit touring to pursue a successful career in advertising. The release of his comeback album If Only For A Moment in 2011 saw him return to the road, playing concerts all over the country. His most recent album Dancing In The Rain featured the evocative track I Wonder Who You’re Waiting For. As Mike recently remarked, he will continue “for as long as I can still deliver. I love performing, always have, and the response from audiences around the country has been wonderful.” Date: Saturday 10 September 2016, 7.30pm. Price: $49.00 Adult / $45.00 Concessions (Seniors and Pensioners) / $25.00 Children Under 16 Book: www.thej.com.au or phone 5329 6560.

Fats and Oils in the diet ... what should you be eating? OUR bodies need a certain amount of fats and oils to function correctly...but having too much can lead to an increased risk of many serious health conditions. So how do you know what types and quantities of fats are ok? What foods are good and what foods are bad? It’s all such a minefield out there ... we’d like to dispel some of the myths for you and answer some questions J According to the Australian Heart Foundation, a healthy balanced diet should include sources of the healthier monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. But what types of foods contain these healthy fats? Examples of foods containing monounsaturated fat: Avocados; Cashews, peanuts and almonds; Cooking oils based on sunflower, canola, soybean, olive, sesame and peanuts. Examples of foods containing polyunsaturated fats: Fish; Tahina (sesame seed spread); Margarine; Flaxseed, sunflower and safflower oils; Pine nuts, walnuts, brazil nuts and linseed; Oily fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines, blue mackerel. So now you know what to do, but let’s talk about what not to do. There are two main types of potentially harmful dietary fats; saturated and trans fat. High consumption of foods containing these fats may lead to a disruption of your good/ bad fats in the bloodstream. Saturated fat - This is a type of fat that comes mainly from animal sources of food, such as red meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products. Choose lean meats and low fat dairy!! Trans fat - This is a type of fat that occurs naturally in some foods in small amounts. But most trans fats are made from oils through a food processing method called partial hydrogenation. This processing method makes the oil easier to cook with and less likely to spoil, so we often see it used in commercially pre-prepared foods and Page 18 - Cooroy Rag, August 17, 2016

takeaway. Choose freshly prepared whole foods using the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats detailed above!! So what about going on a very low-fat diet? If fats can be bad, wouldn’t it be a good idea to eliminate all fat from your diet? NO! Your body needs some healthy fats in order to function properly, and if you eliminate all fat, you may end up deficient in some fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids. Totally eliminating fats can also lead to a diet filled with too many processed “low-fat” or “fatfree” foods, and lacking in other healthier fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Try to think about the different fats in foods and enjoy healthy fats in moderation as part of a well balanced diet. A note on butter and margarine … Our Australian Heart Foundation still recommends the consumption of margarine rather than butter. Some of you will be yelling out by now “but doesn’t margarine contain lots of trans fat?! Isn’t butter better?!”..... Well no, not in Australia. The Heart Foundation, through the Tick Program, led the way in removing trans fat from margarines in Australia in the 90s and Australian margarines now have some of the lowest levels of trans fats in the world and significantly less trans fat than butter. The process of esterification rather than hydrogenation is now used in margarines in Australia - the healthier oils are combined with other ingredients such as milk, water and salt to develop a smooth consistency for spreading. Lecithin (found in egg yolk) is added for helping to mix water with oil. This makes it possible to develop margarines that are lower in saturated fats and virtually free of trans fats. . Are your kids finding studying a pain? AS we head towards the final part of the school year, our school kids are studying for school exams and carting ever increasing amounts of text books home. Unfortunately for a lot of kids, the long hours spent hunched over the books results in neck pain, back pain and headaches. Sitting puts a lot of strain on the spine, especially when combined with the flexed postures often seen when using a computer or reading for prolonged periods. Despite the need to study, there are ways to minimise the strain on the spine and prevent the pain and headaches from occurring. Firstly, having a good posture and desk set-up for studying are essential. Make sure that you are sitting with your bottom as far back in the chair as possible and if your lower back is sore, place a small cushion in the curve of your lower back to support it. If your feet cannot touch the ground, get a small stool to place them on. If you have an adjustable chair, ensure that the height of the chair allows you to look at your computer screen without looking up or down too far. When reading textbooks, use a book support or place them on a cushion, bringing them closer to your eyes and requiring less forward bending of the neck and rounding of the shoulders.

Secondly, taking mini breaks every 30-60 minutes allows some relaxation and stretching of the muscles which become tight when studying. Make sure you stand up, walk around and stretch the neck and back muscles. These short breaks will allow you to continue to study for longer with less pain. In addition to mini breaks, ensuring that you get regular exercise is important for numerous factors. Exercise has many positive effects including keeping your muscles strong and flexible, improving your concentration and memory, as well as improving your sleep quality. Despite these positive effects, many people stop exercising when they are studying due to time constraints. As you can see though, a small time sacrifice for exercise will be outweighed by the benefits. If you are suffering with neck or back pain from studying, get some assistance as soon as possible so that you are not sitting through exams in pain. Seek assistance from your local qualified health professional. Hinteractive Physio has experienced therapists who can assess and treat the cause of your pain as well as offering a youth Yogalates class which combines yoga and pilates to improve posture, flexibility and strength. Hinteractive Physio can be contacted on 5442 5556 or visit our website: www.hinteractivephysio.com.au

What is Ortho-Bionomy Ortho-Bionomy developed out of Osteopathy in the mid 1970s. Ortho-Bionomy works on the nervous system to release muscles, realign bones, increase range of movement and release pain. As the nervous system is sensitive, Ortho-Bionomy is gentle yet can help change chronic painful conditions relatively quickly. “One of the principles of Ortho-Bionomy is that the stability of the structure governs function. The stability of the joints is crucial for the efficient functioning of the body,” says Ortho-Bionomy Practitioner, Rob Rich.

“When your joins are unstable the body recruits your global muscles to support the joint. This reduces your range of movement and is often painful. Stabilising the join allows these muscle spasms to release easy. “If you have struggled to change a chronic painful condition with other modalities book a session of Ortho-Bionomy, you will be surprised at how working differently can lead to better results.” Rob Rich is at the Harmony Wellness Centre at 52 Kauri Street, Cooroy. THE Olympics have created a lot of sleep deprivation in recent weeks, but they’ve also inspiring a new generation of footballers through the play of our Socceroos and Matildas. As the regular season winds down, a number of Cooroora United teams are getting ready to play the most important games of the season. Last week, a few of the teams got together Cooroy Community Bank’s Geoff Edwards to say thanks. More than 200 club members are wearing training shirts supplied by the bank - one of the many ways Bendigo Bank continues to support the Wombats. Cooroora United President, Tony McCarthy took the time to thank branch manager, Geoff Edwards for the Community Bank’s long term support local the club faithful for their part in a season that has seen the club move ahead on many levels. “We all know that sponsors play a key role in supporting a team and the Cooroy Community Bank branch sponsorship of Cooroora United

Geoff Edwards from Cooroy Community Bank branch is joined by players from the U10 and U12 boys and U13 girls Cooroora United teams at training last week is one of many who continue to help us paying the game we love. The bank has provided us with a lot of help on and off the field over the past seven years and our club is on a real high right now,” Tony said. “The players are working really hard at all age levels and it’s wonderful to see the results. To see so many of our

teams out there enjoying their football is terrific for the volunteers who put so much time into the club,” he added. Geoff said he’s thrilled the Cooroy branch has been able to support the Wombats again in 2016. “Cooroora United has so many who give so much of themselves

and always seem to do it with a smile on their face. We see our sponsorship as a great fit and it’s because more and more locals banking with us that we’re able make sponsorships like this possible. “Our branch continues to work for the benefit of our community and I look forward to catching a few games in the lead

up to the finals. We’ll also look forward to sponsoring Cooroora United again in 2017. Go the Wombats!” Geoff said. Anyone looking to catch some of the action or become involved with Cooroora United can download the app or contact the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au

SOCIAL PLAY 7 DAYS after 2pm only $15

Blitzing towards the end of the season AS we draw closer to the end of the season, now is the time that it gets really exciting. Finals are here and we go up against Caloundra at Nambour @ 2.10pm on the 13th August, stay tuned for results. We wish the Cutters the best of luck. On the 30th July, the Cutters fought hard against Maroochydore, going in hard with their tackles and trying every opportune moment to slip away for that try, but Maroochydore got them in the end with a score of 34-26. 3 points went to Nathan Woods 2 points to Phil and 1 point to Rowdy Coleman. Great to see our young players getting in there and giving it their everything. A great day was had at our home game against Beachmere on the 6 th August. Beachmere struggled to get a team together but they pulled through and turned up with a team, good work to them. Cutters blitzed it, winning by 60-0. Getting a team on the field sometimes is hard, so we like to take this opportunity to thank Beachmere for not forfeiting. Home games are great for the community and it would have been sad if the Cutters couldn’t play on the last day of the season at home. High five to Beachmere. Brian Lashford (aka Rooster) had an amazing game taking the 3 points followed by Nugget Aspinall with 2 points and Des McLeary with 1 point. I believe Nugget had a flashback of being 17 . . . Great game to all the players, a terrific day of rugby league.
