Get across with Tania AFTER watching some close calls on the Maple Street pedestrian crossing in Cooroy, Tania Stewart has decided the time has come to do something about it. Tania works at Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy (8 car parks away from the crossing), and says she sees so many cars that don’t slow down or stop for people to cross safely. “It seems Maple Street traffic is getting heavier and busier all the time. Every day now I cross my fingers when I see someone about to step onto the crossing in the hope that they get to the other side safely, said Tania. “It’s an accident waiting to happen. I feel it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hit,” she says. To try and prevent this from happening Tania is petitioning council for a new raised pedestrian crossing. “I hope that we never lose a life there,” said Tania and I feel a raised crossing would go a long way towards making this street a safer place to cross.” It would seem that a lot of locals feel the same as Tania already has over 500 signatures. If you would like to add your name to the list, call into Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy to sign the petition.

It’s a miracle they survived POLICE are still investigating the serious traffic crash at Lake Mcdonald earler this month. Preliminary investigations suggest that around 6.20pm a single vehicle was driving westbound along Lake Macdonald Drive when the driver lost control. The vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. The 18-year-old male driver and a 20-year-old male passenger both sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to the Nambour General Hospital in a serious but stable condition. A 16-year-old female passenger sustained minor facial injuries. Officer in Charge of Cooroy Police Station, Sergeant Mal Scott said it was a miracle all three people escaped the vehicle alive. “The vehicle was completely ruined on impact, when there is this level of destruction in a traffic crash you often fear the worst.” Sergeant Scott said. “The occupants were initially trapped in the wreckage but somehow managed to crawl out of the vehicle.” Sergeant Mal Scott said the crash could have easily been a fatal one. “This is a timely reminder to take care on the roads, don’t speed, don’t drink or take drugs and drive, don’t drive tired, wear your seatbelt, pay attention to the way you are driving and don’t become distracted and obey the road rules. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.” Sergeant Scott said Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day. Crime Stoppers is a registered charity and community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service. For all non-urgent police reporting or general police inquiries contact Policelink on 131 444.

Detours in place as Cooroy drainage project begins TRAFFIC and pedestrian detours will be in place around Cooroy’s Garnet Street from midAugust, as work begins on a $2 million flood mitigation project. Greenwood Grove developer WM Projects is upgrading Garnet Street’s Six Mile Creek crossing to improve the road’s flood immunity and mitigate flooding for residents. Council Civil Construction Engineering Officer Leigh Crichton said Garnet Street will be closed to through-traffic, with access to the western

end of the street via Mary River Road. “It also means there will be no pedestrian access along the closed section of Garnet Street, with a detour in place via Wattle Street, Emerald Street, the railway footbridge and Mary River Road,” he said. Detours will be in place for approximately 12 weeks. “The closure will mean some inconvenience, particularly for pedestrians, and Council appreciates residents’ patience,” Mr Crichton said. The project includes construction of three

Council conditioned the developer to carry out the work as part of the approval for further stages of the Greenwood Grove development. Detour signs will be in place.

Kerbside collection nets 70 tonnes in first two days COUNCIL has collected more than 78 tonnes of rubbish on the first day of the annual kerbside bulk rubbish collection and, in the process, recycled more than seven tonnes of steel. With six weekends to go, Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer is reminding residents to utilise Council’s $20 mattress collection service. “Mattresses aren’t collected as part of the free annual kerbside bulk rubbish collection because

they can’t be compacted in the waste trucks,” Mr Schafer said. “So this year Council is providing a special prepaid mattress disposal service.” Council will pick up old mattresses on the Friday before the weekend that a street has its kerbside collection, for $20 per mattress. “We’ve had a small number of residents include mattresses with their other bulk rubbish but they cannot be collected as part of

that service,” Mr Schafer says. Residents must call Council on (07) 5329 6500 before the Wednesday ahead of their kerbside collection day, provide their details and make payment so Council can then ensure their mattress is collected by a separate vehicle, and recycled. Mr Schafer thanked residents for doing a good job of preparing their bulk rubbish for easy collection, with the volume of rubbish

so far collected down slightly on last year’s haul. “Tyres, gas bottles, chemicals, oil heaters, loose garden waste, and any items that can’t be lifted by two people or are over two metres in length, height or width will not be collected as part of the kerbside collection. These items are excluded for safety reasons and because in some cases they simply don’t fit in the truck.” Mr Schafer said. Residents must also limit

their rubbish to three cubic metres per property or unit complex, including no more than one cubic metre of bundled garden waste. For more information including dates, interactive maps and collection areas please read the pamphlet delivered to your mailbox, v i s i t www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ kerbside-collection<http:// www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ kerbside-collection> or call Council on (07) 5329 6500.

WITH the aid of a grant received from Noosa Council via the State Government’s Drought Assistance funding, Country Noosa is embarking on an ambitious project to identify how best to build the beef supply chain in the Noosa Shire and how local primary producers of all descriptions can best get their product to the market. The study,

undertaken by local food systems specialist Dr Brian Stockwell, will investigate the whole value chain from paddock to plate. Dr Stockwell says “In areas like Noosa, leasing, agistment and share farming are all potentially viable options for graziers to build an economic enterprise. “The brief I have been given is to produce an

Beware the fury of a patient voter Oh what an intriguing time we have had, So much happening, most of it bad. The pollies getting into the honey pot, To them it’s become a real money pot. Then Bronwyn used it to hire that helicopter, Never dreaming that someone would spot her. And Tony Burke had a holiday out at Uluru, But he took the kids for the holiday too. These are just two examples when the taxpayer paid the bills, Demonstrating the pollies’ opinion of the voters as real dills. Now they are seeking for further misdemeanours, Revealing a system which should be put through the cleaners. We’d be appalled if we knew the real extent, Of what is laughingly called an ‘entitlement’. They are claiming innocence, because of the stupid ‘rules’, We may be patient, but we are not patient fools. There seems no conscience to the liberties they’re taking, Nor any limits to the standards they are breaking. The present allowance system is financially unsupportable, And sadly and suspiciously, it is temptingly easy rortable. The public won’t accept this lot that is for sure, And one can quite understand the resultant uproar. Throw out the present ‘system’ bring in one that’s controlled, Managed by a friendless manager, of a miserly mould.

How to start saving

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy It has often been said that the only sure-fire way to become rich is to save more than you earn. Last edition we talked about some of the reasons why you should save, so this week let’s start saving in five easy steps. Setting aside money each pay cycle is a habit that once formed can be quite easy to maintain, and will form the foundations of your financial future. Many people find it difficult to commit to a savings plan, and without putting strategies in place, it is easy to end up with no money left by the end of the pay week. The ATO knows this, so they ensure they get paid first…before you even see the money. Similarly gyms and other companies put systems in place to take money from your account instead of waiting for you to pay them. One of the first lessons is “you wont miss what you don’t have.” 1. Decide – decide what you are saving for, and prioritise. You may have a number of savings goals, in which case it may be helpful to have a

number of different accounts, but you need to decide which is most important for you right now. You will also need to decide how much you can afford to save each week, fortnight or month. 2. Set a timeline – Once you have decided on what you need and when, break the plan down into smaller, more manageable steps. Let’s say you decide to take the family to Bali for a week and you think you will need $3,000. Determine how much time you have to save before the holiday. In simple terms, if you save $150 a fortnight, you will be able to afford the trip in 10 months. If your plan is bigger, such as a home deposit, or retirement planning, keep breaking down the steps and set benchmarks at regular intervals to keep yourself on track. 3. Maximise your savings – Shop around for an account which pays a good rate of interest. Another trick is to make the funds less accessible. Many banks have certain accounts into which you can regularly deposit; however there are restrictions on when you

can access the funds. For example, Christmas club accounts only permit withdrawals over the festive season and are a great option to plan ahead. 4. Make it automatic – By setting up an automatic transfer, either through your employer or directly with the bank, you will ensure that you maintain your savings every time you are paid. The simplest way of doing this is via your internet banking, establishing a transfer of your allocated amount, which will coincide with your regular payday. 5. Reduce your debts – It is no good trying to saving money if you have any debt such as credit cards or pay-day loans,

as you will often find that any interest you earn on your savings is eaten up by the interest you are paying on your borrowings. It is very easy to get caught up in a debt circle and it can often feel overwhelming trying to deal with the issue. However, there are some great tools available to help you manage your debts and to start planning for a better future. If you would like to discuss any information about savings or debt reduction, or any other banking needs home loan or insurance of any kind, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG Guardian farewells Malcolm and Jodie COOROY Guardian Pharmacy is saying farewell to brother-sister duo Malcolm and Jodie. The siblings have been a part of the team for the past 6 years. Jodie is starting a new pharmacy position in Gympie that will allow her more time on her hobby farm in the Mary Valley. Meanwhile, Malcolm intends on making the move to Melbourne where he hopes to continue working in the Pharmacy and healthcare industry. “It’s going to be strange not working along side Jodie every day. Although we’ve loved every minute at the Pharmacy, we both feel that now is the time for change,” Malcolm said. Cooroy Guardian would like to welcome Tess and Deb to the team who will be taking over Malcolm and Jodie’s positions respectively. Jodie said that they “Would like to thank all of our loyal customers for their support, and an even bigger thank you to our colleagues and friends at Cooroy Guardian who’ve made coming to work every day a pleasure.”

3D mammography for earlier breast cancer detection NOOSA Radiology is excited to offer 3D mammography exams to women living in the Sunshine Coast, for earlier breast cancer detection than ever before. This newer technology produces a three-dimensional view of breast tissue and has been shown in clinical studies to be significantly superior to traditional 2D mammography. 3D mammography enables radiologists to identify and characterise individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue, which can result in false positive findings with traditional 2D mammography. Research shows 1540% more women will be spared the anxiety of being called back for further testing with 3D mammography. Dr Drew McMenamin, Chief Radiologist at Noosa Radiology says: “We believe 3D mammography will benefit all patients, but will be especially valuable for women

seeking a diagnostic mammogram such as those with a strong family history or patients with any breast changes or symptoms, as well as women in their 40s with dense breast tissue. “The advantage of the latest 3D technology is the dose savings for our patients compared with previous generation 3D machines” according to Dr Drew Mcmenamin. Noosa Radiology is a leader in Breast Imaging in Australia, offering a complete range of diagnostic and interventional services including Breast Ultrasound and Breast MRI, as well as CT and Nuclear imaging. They also offer a breast cancer risk assessment to tailor screening to an individual’s needs. To schedule an appointment or if you have any questions about this important breast health procedure, please phone 5440 9700.

Woodworkers helping Katie Rose Members of Cooroora Workers Club are having an on-going affair with Katie Rose. It all began at a fund raising lunch at the Eumundi markets some years ago in aid of the Katie Rose Hospice where some CWC members offered their work as prizes in the raffles. The lunch which has now become well known as the Long Lunch has been very successful in raising funds for this charity which was founded in 2008. The Katie Rose Hospice is located in beautiful grounds just off Eumundi-Noosa

Road in Doonan and offers compassionate palliative and respite care from the specialised medical staff and many volunteers. When Bob Jones & Don Briggs heard that the hospice needed a new kitchen table they set about to create a robust mobile replacement with Camphor Laurel top and shelf and Hoop Pine frame. The package also included a cutting board made from leftover Camphor Laurel. The working surfaces – table top and shelf were belt sanded 180-240 grit and finished with Grape Seed

Oil. On Tuesday July 28th Bob & Don installed and presented the table to the hospice on behalf on the Cooroora Woodworkers Club. The gift was gratefully accepted by Susan Musgrove (Nurse in Charge) and John Gabrielson (Volunteer Manager) on behalf of Katie Rose and Bob and Don were treated to an excellent morning tea with the happy staff and patients. Here is another wonderful example of how Cooroora Woodworkers Club contributes to our local community.

THE Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative Inc. (SCCLTI) has been serving its many customers for over a decade now, and is going from strength to strength. With a new, enthusiastic management committee in place this year, a solid pipeline of new members joining recently is but one indicator of the increased presence of the group in Noosa Shire. Stuart Campbell is the President, and is ably supported by his eight member committee, including Bruce Cabot as Foreman. Staffed entirely by local volunteers, this not-forprofit group, located in the big colorbond shed in Lower Mill Road Cooroy, has undergone a period of immense change in 2015 to reinvigorate itself, including a clean up and redesign of their timber workshop layout. Having also recently installed a fully hydraulic bandsaw mill in their Cooroy log yard, the volunteers can now mill timber logs up to 2 tonnes in weight and up to 6 metres long, from camphor trees donated predominantly from Noosa Shire landholders. The logs are

milled into slabs and boards, which are then dried over several years and made into an ever changing range of timber products for sale to the public, including cutting boards, tables, chairs, kitchen utensils, bowls, mobile chopping blocks, bookcases, bars, stools, etc. All sale proceeds are retained by the group and spent in local community businesses on services and products to keep the group functioning. Accolades and support letters from many satisfied customers are proof that the model is working, and the volunteer team prides itself in supporting a wide range of other not for profit groups in Noosa Shire too, including schools, scouts, permaculture, etc. A recent visit by Nambour Men’s Shed members and a recent very successful joint morning tea with SCCLTI’s neighbours, the Cooroora Woodworkers, allowed for skills and ideas to be exchanged, and new friendships formed. Whether it is supplying camphor laurel shavings and sawdust for local chook owners‘ and vegie growers, donating timber products as raffle prizes,

having a sales presence at various local markets, or building specific timber items to suit individual customer needs, SCCLTI is there to help. A funding grant was recently awarded by Noosa Council to SCCLTI toward a timber throughput capacity upgrade project which is now underway, and Council, together with Cooroy Library, Friends of Mill Place, and the Cooroy Mill Board remain long term supporters of the group. This capacity upgrade should see the manufacturing process better able to keep up with the milling of camphor laurel trees (one of Noosa’s top

10 weed pests!), which are then turned into value added products. SCCLTI is proud to be keeping the Cooroy district’s timber skills heritage alive and importantly, offers its volunteers an outlet where they can learn, practice, and enhance their skills and love of working with timber. Customers of the group comment that they love to see woodworking skills being put to productive use in the community, and particularly as the end products are made from a declared weed, with camphor laurel also being a natural pest deterrent. The fate of this timber otherwise would be landfill,

mulch or simply rotting in situ! Why not call in to the shed in Lower Mill Road one weekday morning between 0730 and 1230 and see the volunteers in action, or browse their on-site retail shop outlet and pick up a camphor laurel bargain or souvenir. They are only a short stroll across the creek from Cooroy library, and parking is available at the shed door. For visitors, there is also plenty of space to turn your RV rig or caravan! New members are welcome at any time, and the team can be contacted on the shed phone number 0435 481 108.

We live in a country where floods and fires are common and where you may not have much notice that such events are imminent. Property fires can develop and engulf a house within minutes and building faults can result in significant water damage in a very short time. Research has shown that most families and 50% of small businesses in particular do not have any form of disaster plan in place. A personal disaster plan would involve: • Deciding with your family what are the most important things to be rescued and the usual order is family, pets and photos. Anything else can usually be replaced. • Everyone in the family should know what their role and responsibility is if disaster strikes, as well as knowing how to get out of the property if normal exits are blocked and where everyone should gather. • There are readily available internet based services for backing up photos and music – these are inexpensive and, once set up, automatic. • Scan important documents such as wills and insurance policies and include them in your automated backups. • Set up a list of important contacts and passwords and include them in your backups. • Load a USB drive with the contact and password list (put an easily remembered password on the file) and keep it with you at all times. • Create an evacuation box and keep it in a specified, easily accessible location known to everyone in the family. It should not be

moved from this location except for a regular review and refreshing of its contents. Suggested contents are copies of insurance policies in sealed plastic bags, laminated copies of prescriptions for regular medications, a laminated copy of important phone numbers (but not your passwords!), a wind-up torch (readily available from the supermarket), a small radio and a supply of batteries, a basic first aid kit. There are a number of business disaster recovery plan templates available on the internet and many consultants specialise in this area. As a minimum you should consider the following: • Backup your computers to an offsite location. A computer backup is no use in a disaster if it is kept in the same place as the main data. Internet – based, automatic backup services are readily available and are inexpensive. • It makes sense to use a Document Management System (“DMS”) to scan all business documents and keep them in computer files which are backed up as part of your automated processes. Important original documents such as mortgage documents, trust deeds, corporate

registers and signed agreements should not only be scanned into your DMS but kept off-site in secure storage • You should consider business interruption insurance to cover the cost of setting up new premises and re-establishing computer records Whilst the above suggestions are by no means comprehensive they could form the foundation of your family’s and your business’s ability to recover quickly if fire, flood or other disaster strikes. A cold night as a homeless person ON Monday 03 August 2015 the Interact Club at the Noosa District State High School NDSHS) Shelly Ryan received a cheque for $1267.40 to buy 16 Street Swags which are sleeping bags for the homeless in Queensland. 24 Noosa District State High School students experienced life as a homeless person thanks to the work of the Rotary Club of Cooroy and NDSHS’s student run Interact Club. Interact Club President and Year 12 NDSHS student Chloe Baré described the experience “as painful and truly unforgettable”. The lives of the 24 students changed overnight; with all participants realising how much is taken for granted by many within our local school community. A sense of awareness for the plight of the homeless was raised through the event by the actions of those participating and those who sponsored the students involved. Chloe Baré, Interact Club President said: “It was uncomfortable, cold and quite an eyeopening experience. Street Swags is such an amazing and inspirational cause and I am proud to have been able to establish the relationship with the organisation through the Interact Club” The night was particularly cold and uncomfortable for the students and teachers involved, but the experience certainly helped to establish the fact that many take for granted the food in the fridge, a roof over their head and a comfortable bed to sleep in at night. Interact Club said: “Students were provided with the opportunity to experience first-hand how many homeless spend a typical night, sleeping with little to no bedding on cardboard boxes and having a simple dinner of soup and bread from a soup kitchen set up by the Rotary Club of Cooroy.” “The sacrifice and community spirit shown by the NDSHS Interact Club was very impressive and the generosity shown by the students who participated in the event, will no doubt be greatly appreciated.”

Bloomhill calls for donations AT this time of year, it is so easy to stay in-doors watching movies and drinking Hot Chocolate. This winter, Bloomhill Cancer Care is asking the community to pause the movie and instead have a winter clean out as the Bloomhill Op Shops are running very short on blankets, linen and winter clothing. In addition, supplies of good saleable items such as bric a brac, kitchenware, furniture and jewellery are always welcome. Bloomhill General Manager Mervat Quirke says “We are calling on the community to think of us when they de-clutter their homes and pass on any saleable items they no longer want.” Items can be left at the Cooroy Bloomhill Op Shop which is located at 21 Maple Street Cooroy. Bloomhill even offer a free pick-up service for donations of larger items. Contact the Bloomhill Distribution Centre on 5445 6858 to arrange a collection. Bloomhill has always been committed to keeping prices affordable and this is only pos-

sible through the ongoing generosity of donations from the community. Mervat added “Bloomhill relies on our OpShops to generate more than 80 per cent of the funds we need to care for people with cancer and their families on the Sunshine Coast. We are very thankful to the public for donations of goods, as it ensures Bloomhill can continue to provide support and assistance to more than 750 cancer patients on the Sunshine Coast,” Bloomhill Cancer Care is a Sunshine Coast based charity that provides support and assistance to those affected by cancer. Operated by a team of dedicated professional staff and hundreds of volunteers, Bloomhill offers counselling, transport to appointments, respite care and a range of complementary therapies and other practical help. news Patches bi-annual Qulit Show PATCHES of Cooroy will be holding their bi-annual Quilt Show “Quilts for all Seasons” on September 25/26. The show promises to surprise and delight with, as the name implies, bright, beautiful quilts both traditional and contemporary. Patches members are truly innovative quilters and our group also includes very talented embroiderers, knitters and hand crafters. We will be conducting guided tours of the quilts on display at 11.00am and 2.00pm each day to explain the quilting process from planning to completion. Demonstrations of quilt making, machine and hand embroidery, knitting and jumbo crochet will be on going over both days. Patches members enjoy challenges and in 2010 designed, made and donated an amazing community quilt which is on permanent display at our Library. Our “Challenge Project” this year is to create the most innovative item incorporating a selected fabric and a doily. This year we will be raffling two stunning quilts at our show – a bright ABC children’s quilt and a de-

lightful contemporary quilt. The profits from our show are donated to local charities, and this year both Katie Rose Cottage and our local Fire Brigade will benefit. We regularly make and donate quilts to various charities and host a wonderful “Pink” Biggest Morning Tea every year to raise funds for cancer. On Friday 25th and Saturday 26th of September from 10am to 4pm our Quilt Show will be on dis-

play in all its glory at the RSL Memorial Hall, Maple Street, Cooroy. Entry fee $5.00. Refreshments, stalls and beautiful handcrafted sale items will be available. Bring your families and friends and feast your eyes on our fantastic quilts. For any information regarding our group or the Quilt Show contact: Lyn Roberts 0419 172 077 or Julie Dodds 0427 305 654

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

THE Queensland Police Service will launch a State Wide initiative called “Road Safety Week” aimed at changing attitudes to unsafe driving by appealing to the public to take responsibility for their own actions and make a pledge to themselves that if you are guilty of making bad decisions whilst driving then promise yourself and your loved ones that you will change your behaviour. Road safety week will run from the 17th to the 21st of August with driver education being the main focus of the week as well as increased enforcement by police. Attitude. Safe driving practises is all about having the right attitude to driving. Eighty percent of drivers do the right thing however it is up to all of us, not just the police, as a community, to change the bad habits of the twenty percent of bad drivers by attempting to influence the bad choices that they make which can so often led to serious and sometimes fatal traffic incidents. Notice I don’t use the term accident as an accident is something that happens by chance and unexpectedly with the vast majority of serious traffic incidents occurring due to a normal person simply making a bad choice when driving which is certainly not an accident as the end result is completely foreseeable. To my way of thinking the best placed people to influence the behaviour of these high risk drivers is the core group of family and friends who have daily interactions with them. If you truly love and care for a person who is regularly making bad choices whilst driving why not show just how much you care for them by getting proactive and whenever you witness or hear of bad driving, have a go at the person and let them know that it’s not cool to drive like a dill and endanger themselves and other people. Let them know that it’s just not the right thing to do to speed, to use your mobile phone or drive distracted, to drive whilst tired or to drink or

drug drive and to always use a seatbelt. Let them know that their behaviour is not acceptable and have the guts to speak up as the behaviour is happening and not just be a sheep sitting in the car hoping for the best. Have the guts to tell the driver to stop the car and get out of the car and phone someone else to pick you up. Surely if that driver’s friends and family care for them they will have the guts to say, “Enough is enough. Stop driving like a dill.” Tell them to stop dropping burnouts and drifting and showing off to their mates in a misguided attempt at showing them just how good of a driver they are because they feel the need to impress their friends. If you, as a friend or family member stand up and call it for what it is then surely we, as a community can change the driving behaviour of the above mentioned twenty percent. The alternative is to do nothing and wait for that knock on the door telling you that your loved one is dead. Of course, the big stick approach is there with police ready and willing to prosecute drivers for non-compliance with the traffic laws which can include lengthy license disqualifications and car impoundments. On the crime front, Cooroy continues to trend well below state crime averages which is a true testament to the relationship between local police and the community who continue to assist us with solving crime and being the eyes and ears of police and always reporting suspicious behaviour and looking out for their neighbours. Recently, a break and enter offence occurred on a business premises in rural Cooroy and due to some excellent forensic investigations from our Forensic Crime Unit a 24 year old Gympie man has been arrested and charged with this and other offences. It’s not only good to solve this crime but to arrest this male means that his mini crime spree is brought to an end which is a win for our community and people who would

have been victims if not for the good work of police. As a foot note to this offence, please assist us with solving crime by taking the time to install location tracking security Apps on all of your electronic devices as most devices now have the ability to display their whereabouts in the event of them being lost or stolen. It’s simple and free so take this small step and protect yourself in the event that you are the victim of a crime.

AS we approach springtime many of our Australian native orchids are spiking so keep an eye out for them as they flower in the next couple of weeks. Another one of those to flower in spring is the Indian Dendrobiums and as the name suggests they come from northern India. Most of these orchids grow on deciduous trees in a very similar climate as ours. They enjoy wet summers and dry winters with a temperature drop as we get here during winter. They will grow outdoors as long as there is no frost. These plants plus many more varieties will be on show and for sale at the Noosa Orchid & Foliage Society Show being held in Cooroy on the 18th & 19th September. To learn more about the culture of orchids the Noosa club holds its meetings the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah hall starting at 1.00 pm. We will be discussing Australian Native at the next meeting. All visitors welcome. For more information Contact 54832764 or visit the club website.

THE 2015 King of the Mountain Festival was held in Pomona on 26 July, and it was a terrific success. The big event of the day was the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, and 108 competitors lined up to race to the top of Mt Cooroora and back. The day was gloriously blue and sunny, although being the hottest July day on record in Queensland wasn’t helpful for such a strenuous and dangerous race. The outright winner was Hayden Wilde from New Zealand, in an impressive 25:42. Hayden is 17 years old, and the youngest person to ever win the Mountain Challenge. Hayden fought off a dogged challenge from his countryman Shay Williamson to claim the title of King of the Mountain, winning the event 14 seconds ahead of his rival. The women’s outright winner was local woman Leslie Saunders, in a time of 33:14. Leslie is a super-fit endurance athlete, and looked remarkably poised and composed as she crossed the finish line. But not everyone finished this year. For the first time in 37 years there were two medical evacuations from the mountain, for a popped knee and broken ankle. The RACQ Rescue Helicopter was called in to winch both competitors to safety, because having SES volunteers trek into such steep terrain in failing light, with full kit and stretchers, would have been too dangerous for all concerned. The crowds turned out in force, and for the spectators the day offered an enormous amount of fun. The entertainment from Janice Smithers and her band had everyone rocking, the variety of food was almost too much to contemplate, the antiques fair buzzed, and the heritage market provided a range of interesting and unique pieces to choose from. The delighted squeals echoing from one corner of Stan Topper Park indicated that the Assistance Puppies, Greyhound Rescue ambassador dogs and Petting Zoo were also a great hit, and a variety of beautifully maintained cars and steam-engines kept the rev-heads happy. The fire brigade were in the midst of providing a fascinating and scary insight into what not to do in a kitchen fire when real-life intervened, and they had to dash off to save someone. The time it took from receiving the call-out to calmly ending the demonstrating and getting on the road was less than two minutes. These extremely competent men and women demonstrated quite clearly that they are exactly who you need by your side when you’re facing an emergency. Despite their best efforts, the fire brigade did not win the Corporate Tug of War this year, with the title going instead to the Cooroy Cutters rugby league team, who utilized an intriguing and very effective rope pulling technique. Over at the skate park, a big group of competitors vied for $500 of prizes by producing some seriously difficult tricks. Can you imagine hurtling along on your board, skidding it along a concrete obstacle, then flipping it several times while you leap into the air, landing flat on it and zooming off unscathed? That’s what it took to win prizes in this competition. The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club. Yet again, they did a terrific job organizing this charity event, and the Sunshine Coast community is rightly proud of their efforts.

Pomona-based Luke Bordessa from ‘My Wooden Heart’ has a very big heart. He’s undertaking a charity bike ride in August from the Sunshine Coast (leaving Sunday 23 August) to the Central Coast of NSW (arriving Saturday 29 August) - riding solo over 1100 km in 7 days. The aim is to raise funds for two girls in need - Jameela and Ruby. Jameela Cox Bowden, 4, lives in Coolum and was severely brain damaged after a car accident 18 months ago and now needs lifelong care for therapies and specialists. She is still struggling to walk, talk and eat properly, has a peg in her stomach to help with food intake, and requires constant care. Luke met Jameela’s dad Jason through

www.cooroyrag.com.au

mutual friends and with a young son himself, thought he would get on the bike he’s not ride for years - for a worthy cause. He’ll be riding from Jameela’s home to the home of another girl Ruby Adams in Killarney Vale, NSW (just north of Sydney). Ruby lives on the Central Coast and has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder with many complications and very expensive medicine (costing her family about $1000 /month) Luke aims to raise $15,000 to assist the girls and their families with respite time, and out of pocket expenses. His fundraising Facebook page with a link to the donation site is: https://www.facebook.com/ rideforrubyandjameela.

Preventing gardening injuries With Spring just around the corner, that unattended garden will be starting to receive some love and care. What we find as physiotherapists though, is that when venturing back into the garden, most people tend to overdo it and end up with aches and pains following their weekend activities. We commonly hear: “But I only did a few hours of gardening”. But let’s have a think about it. If you went out and decided to jog for 3 hours would you be sore? I would think for most people, the answer is “Yes”. Gardening can be quite a physical pursuit, especially when digging, mulching and wheelbarrowing is involved. But there is a lot that you can do to minimise the risk of injuring your body when returning to the garden: 1. Ease into it. Yes, there are lots of jobs to do, but they don’t all need to be done on the one day or weekend. Make a list of jobs and spread them out over a few weekends. 2. Vary your activity. Move frequently

between jobs so that you don’t spend too much time in the one position or doing the one activity (no more than 15-20min in the same position or activity) 3. Use your leg muscles instead of your back. Make sure you squat to pick things up, rather than bending over all the time. It will reduce the strain on your lower back and give your legs a workout instead. 4. Try sitting on a low stool instead of stooping over continuously when weeding or planting. 5. Try kneeling but use a piece of foam to protect your knees and get up regularly. It is quite normal to experience some delayed muscle soreness for a day or 2 when returning to activity but if pain persists or your joints become sore, make sure you visit a physiotherapist to help manage any issues and give you advice on prevention. Rebecca Steele owns Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Walking into Two Worlds Easily? FOR those reading this information regarding the next ‘Walking in Two Worlds’ Easily?’ workshop the Early Bird Special will still be available for those attending this workshop i.e. when you book please mention this Cooroy Rag article and you will receive the special price. Details are shown below. Some of the questions I will be asking at the beginning of this next ‘get together’ will be - are you simply ‘existing’ or ‘thriving?’ Are you are ready to learn ways to go beyond simply ‘existing’ and ‘flourish?’ Are any of those around you and even maybe those reading this feel like they are not ‘getting the most’ out of each moment of every day? Are you really happy - in peace - balanced? Having fun? If this is not the case - what might be preventing you from enjoying life? In the introduction to the seminar I will be briefly retracing a small part of the basic information for those attending this series of workshops for the first time. For example there will be a more extensive explanation of why people are seeing the numbers11:11 regularly. Synchronicity is one of the reasons but there’s even more important information regarding these occurrences. During the ‘Are you ready for: The next steps to “Walking in Two Worlds” Easily?’ workshop we will explore ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ and how these are tied in with karma. And I will explain how we can clear this easily! Also on the list of topics are learning how to work with one’s DNA; how to speak to our cells plus learn how to know if they are hearing us. We will also be exploring ways to keep our energy at a ‘high level’ and why sometimes we have ‘challenges’ staying in that wonderful state of bliss, harmony and balance. There a number of reasons why this occurs which we’ll cover. There will be time set aside for questions and answers. Afternoon tea will be catered for and is included in the cost of the event. I have had a few people asking me about having a busy mind - something that I must say I have to focus on calming every now and again. The workshop will end with information on ‘Mindfulness’ and also a guided meditation which will be set to high vibrational music. Finally my apologies to those reading this who were

turned away from the first workshop at Cooroy Library. Even though I have a larger venue for this next event bookings will still be necessary. I hope to meet those with whom it was not possible to connect with last time. Come join me as we share in ways in which we can ‘thrive’ plus learn how the New Energies are affecting us. We will discuss some practical and helpful ways to handle the changes we’re going through. I look forward to meeting you. Date: Saturday, 29th August, 2015. Time: 1.30 p.m. for a 1.45 p.m. start - 5 p.m. Afternoon tea provided. Early Bird special price of $30 is extended to Cooroy Rag readers. Bookings are essential. Phon Lis on (07) 5474 1102. Eumundi Rotarians compete in Kokoda Challenge

@ Salon Unique 20 Maple Street Cooroy

At the finish; Shawn Godwin, Jim Ennis, Les Godwin, Jock Howard. THREE Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Eumundi and the son of one of the Rotarians competed in the 2015 Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast over the weekend 18/10 July. Rotarians Les Godwin, Jim Ennis and Jock Howard, and Les’ son Shawn Godwin undertook the gruelling 96 km course that leads along fire trails, through creeks and up to incredible heights in the Gold Coast hinterland. Over 2,500 hardy souls participated in the event. All the pain and effort was worth it President Les said. “In order to compete the team had to raise a minimum of $1,600 in donations. The money raised goes towards the Kokoda Youth Foundation, who run youth programs that help young people in our own community.” President Les was delighted to report that with

• SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY •WOMEN’S HEALTH • MANIPULATION • MASSSAGE / NEEDLING •TAI CHI • PILATES •YOGALATES

the help of sponsors, family and friends the team was able to raise $5,700 which placed their team, Broken Bones 2, fourth in the overall donation list. “A fabulous effort and great for the youth of our country.” The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast is hailed as Australia’s toughest team endurance event. It is a gruelling, cross country, 4-person team event held over 96km, with a time limit for completion of 39 hours. There is a good reason behind this distance and time - 96 km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track. “I’m glad to report that the team pulled up well after the event; tired, sore, but very, very happy with our efforts” President Les said.

Endeavour Foundation Cooroy gets behind Children’s Book Week TO coincide with Children’s Book Week (2228 August), Endeavour Foundation’s Recycled Clothing store in Cooroy is offering 50% off a great selection of quality pre-loved books. Each year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia celebrates books for the young and the young at heart with Children’s Book Week. Running from 22 to 28 August, this year’s Book Week theme is ‘Books Light Up Our World’. Endeavour Foundation Executive General Manager of Supporter Enterprises, Leanne Ferris, said there is something for every keen reader to discover in-store. “We’re very proud to be promoting Book Week again. It’s a great initiative to encourage children to read and learn.

“It’s also an excellent fit for us as Endeavour Foundation provides, amongst other forms of support, education for people with a disability,” Ms Ferris said. Endeavour Foundation also provides accommodation, employment and training, vocational and lifestyle opportunities. “Best of all, store profits support people with a disability to have the choices of an ordinary life – to do the kinds of things that many people might take for granted,” Ms Ferris said. Endeavour Foundation is an independent notfor-profit organisation supporting more than 3,300 people with a disability from more than 230 locations in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

NOOSA District State High School Pomona and Cooroy campuses came together at Cooroy last week for the very first athletics carnival with Year 7 student competitors. Top performing Year 7 competitor efforts were recorded in the NDSHS sports records for this year and will be the records to beat in future athletics carnivals. The junior school students were ‘buddied up’ with senior school leaders, who introduced the Year 7 and 8 students to the senior campus and assisted in ensuring the day ran smoothly. Attendance for the athletics carnival was very good, with most students signing up for a variety of events to earn points for their house. The theme of the carnival was villains and superheros, and it was exciting to see many Supermen and Superwomen, Jedi Knights, Jokers, cowboys and girls take to the field with much enthusiasm and good humour.

Golf: 10th Anniversary Celebrations COOROY Golf Club celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the opening of its 18hole course on Saturday 25 July 2015. The 9-hole course opened on 29 June 1936 while the last 9-holes were officially opened on 29 June 2005. President Rob Powell welcomed the invited guests – Patron Jim Dunstan MBE and the members of the Management Committee of 2005. He thanked past committees for their foresight to plan for the extension of the course to 18 holes. Bill Galvin, President in 2005 was invited to speak. Bill reminisced about the Opening Day in 2005 when the heavens opened up and everyone came in from playing golf saturated and muddy. He spoke of his com-

mittee at that time, in particular the late John Reilly, an outstanding Finance Director, who guided the club down the right financial path. The celebrations were tinged with a touch of sadness as we farewelled Diane Payne, who has worked behind the bar for 35 years. Jim Dunstan read a poem that he had written for her – apparently not the first. Wayne Patston, manager of the club for 11 years, thanked Wayne Brogden for his great work as Project Manager for the completion of the new 9 holes. He thanked Di for her dedication and it was noted that a tear or two welled in his eyes. Di was presented with a watch and a bunch of flowers. She thanked everyone for the memories she will take away. She then cut the decorated cake. Many thanks to George & Karen Hall (Sew Direct) who sponsored the golf on the day and to all those who organised the golf and the celebrations afterwards. Thanks to Bob Watson for the photos.

LAST season Noosa Little Athletics produced 3 National Champions and several State Champions. This sporting excellence is a result of both the athletes efforts and dedication and the coaches commitment and expertise. Noosa is in a very fortunate position to offer such high quality coaching. After a successful 2014/2015 Noosa Little Athletics is looking forward to the upcoming season. The sign on dates for the 2015/2016 season are this Friday the 14th(4-7pm) and next Sunday the 23rd(9am-1pm) of August. Both sign on dates are at the Girraween Sports complex, Eenie Creek Road, Sunshine Beach. Many athletes come through the ranks from the earliest age groups and progress all the way to state and national competitions. Their efforts are recognized at the annual presentation night. For many of the younger athletes it a very special night as age champions and major awards winners are presented with trophies. One of the special age groups is the under 9’s as it is the first year

athletes can attend the state championships if they qualify through the regional championships. Two athletes that experienced the joy this pathway provides were Christian Caldwell & Sebastian Hayes (see photo). Both athletes were also feeling very happy on the awards night as Sebastian managed to pick up the Coaches Award & Christian picked up the Most Improved Athlete Award & Age Champion.

Sunshine Coast Badminton A TEAM event was held recently at the Sunshine Coast Badminton Centre in Nambour. Twenty-eight players representing Cooroy, Nambour and Caboolture Badminton Clubs participated in the four-team event. A fun day of

badminton playing was had and some very close scores resulted. The next team event will be held on Saturday 12th September and all players are welcome to enter.

Cameron-Hands ready for Russia IMPACT Boxing Academy is in full preparation training at the moment as young superstar Sam CameronHands enters the final stages of his preparation for the World Junior Men’s Boxing Championships to be held in Russia. The whole gym has been swept up in the buzz of Sam’s preparation and everyone is digging deep and training hard alongside their club brother. Fair to say that all the fighters are super fit at the moment. Sam is in his 7th week of a 10 week preparation programme designed by Coach Mark Evans and the Australian Institute of Sport. Sam will head to Melbourne this weekend for a 3 day sparring camp. The aim of this camp is to spar Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night, Sunday morning and fly home Sunday afternoon. This camp will mimic what will happen at the World Titles. Once you win at the world titles you go into the next round and compete the following day and continue to do so until you win the final or are eliminated from the competition. Sam may have to compete 3-4 days in a row, so this camp in Melbourne is crucial to his preparation. “Sam’s training is going really well. He has been training twice a day now for the last 7 weeks with only one rest day a week. With only 3 weeks to go until the World

Titles I couldn’t be happier with his preparation. He is in great shape physically and mentally. I honestly believe that he has what it takes to win Gold on the World stage and have no doubt that he will be bringing that Gold medal home to Cooroy,” Coach Mark Evans said. “I would also like to thank John Jenkins from Ri-Con Contractors Pty Ltd. John has jumped on board Sam’s “Road To Russia” campaign and has paid for our accommodation and flights to Melbourne for our upcoming camp as his sponsorship for Sam’s preparation. Craig & Bec Steele from Hinteractive Physio have also jumped on board as well offering their services to keep Sams’s body in great shape as their sponsorship. A thank you also to the Pomona Bowls Club for their contribution to Sam’s campaign. I thank the three of you from the bottom of my heart. Your kindness means the world to us and I ask you all to support the people that are supporting us,” Mark Evans said. We are still seeking sponsors to help Sam on his incredible journey to becoming a World Champion. If there are any other businesses or individuals that would like to help, no matter how big or small please contact Mark Evans via email - mark@impactboxingacademy.com

sport Wombats put on a show to thank their proud sponsors

COOROORA United Football Club took the opportunity to host a thank you celebration for their sponsors last Friday night. Michael Price was on hand with a number of other proud and hard-working committee members to thank some of the sponsors who have got behind the club in 2015 - many of them for a number of years. Geoff Edwards from Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Dr. Tom Wilkinson from Sunrise Dental, Rob Chapman from Chapman’s Auto Repairs and Craig Steele from Hinteractive Physio were photographed being thanked for their support and took in a few games as they

enjoyed the atmosphere. Others sponsors to be thanked include: Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Gelignite Jacks, Caledonian Colour, Noosa Trophies and Engraving and Fraser Coast Vets. It’s been a great season for the Cooroybased club and everyone is looking forward to the push towards the finals with several teams looking like they will make an impact, including the Coastal Women’s team and the U17, U15 and U13 boys’ teams. Go the Wombats! Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au.
