New community transport for Kenilworth THE Kenilworth community will soon have a new way to connect to the broader Sunshine Coast region with Sunshine Coast Council providing a vehicle as part of a 12-month Community Transport trial. Division 10 Cr Greg Rogerson said the trial would be a first for the Sunshine Coast and had attracted a positive response from the Kenilworth community. “Kenilworth’s isolation from public transport presents difficulties for somes residents, prompting the introduction of this affordable Community Transport trial,” Cr Rogerson said. “The council-provided vehicle can undertake as many trips as the community desires, with patrons paying $8 per return trip. “The vehicle will be driven by community volunteers, suitably qualified and certified. Council will cover the costs of accreditation of drivers from the Kenilworth community. “However, the trips must not coincide with or duplicate the public transport services offered by Translink.” Council will allocate an annual $2000 towards the Kenilworth community as a working fund to assist in operational costs and ensure council’s vehicle is maintained in good order. “The trial will allow council to gauge a better understanding of the community’s requirements and their support for this kind of service,” Cr Rogerson said. “The trial will be monitored and, depending on the level of community support, an ongoing Community Transport scheme may be considered.”

WE choose to call the hinterland home. Whether it’s Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin, Lake MacDonald or somewhere in between, we’re part of the beautiful hinterland and our community is a solid and vibrant one. A successful community benefits all who live in it. By that I mean our residents feel safe living here, we have access to quality facilities, we’re able to earn a living here and our towns have an energetic feel to them. To enhance our community experience, we can choose to do a few things to make a real difference for everyone. Choosing to shop locally is a great start. By shopping in our own backyard, we get to know the people we deal with on a regular basis. This can be comforting as most people like to deal with people they know and trust. Local business will often try to support other local businesses so fruit, vegies and other items are often sourced from around our region. Shopping locally supports the local business owner. Utilising facilities, attractions or even attending local events is another way of supporting our community. We proudly sponsored the Pomona King of the Mountain again this year and have so for the best part of a decade. It’s good, old fashioned community celebration at its best and brings generations and the many facets of our community together. Attending events like this ensures exposure for our region and it attracts customers into our towns. The great thing about Pomona King of

the Mountain and the amazing team of Cooroy and Pomona Lions who put it all together every year is that the event is produced to support the great club, but also to support local businesses. It’s a great example of our community supporting and celebrating itself. This event has been getting bigger and bigger over the years and the bottom line is a celebration with a thriving community is always a great place to be. So, why not get out there and enjoy the great community we have here? If you would like to learn more about the many ways your Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches are involved in our community, contact me, Simone or any of the team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona), and see how doing your banking with us makes a difference for all who live here. Geoff Edwards is the Business Development Manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank.

news Retirement planning – make the most of your money Spreading kindness in Cooroy!

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

LITTLE things can make a big difference to how long your money lasts in retirement. When it comes to retirement planning, you’ll want to make the most of your money, after all you don’t want to fritter away the savings you’ve worked all your life to achieve. So, whether you’re living a comfortable or modest lifestyle in retirement, there are still ways to make your money go further in retirement and make every dollar count. Here are five things to consider: 1. Sell your second car If it’s not critical to your daily routine, not only could you top up your savings with the sale proceeds, but you will save on annual registration, insurance and maintenance costs. Find out which concessions are available to you in your state to travel by public transport. Or catch a taxi occasionally as it will still be cheaper than maintaining a second car. 2. Renegotiate your bills Check with your providers about bundling to save on services such as technology (phone, broadband), and energy (electricity, gas). Or check other providers’ rates through comparison websites. Ask if your provider offers a pensioner or seniors discount and then put what you save towards other expenses. 3. Investigate discounts and rebates Visit the Department of Social Services or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs websites to learn about benefits and payments, such as pensions, allowances, bonuses, concession cards, supplements and other services you can access. Or find out about the Seniors Card for discounts on travel, health, lifestyle, government services and finance in your state. 4. Save on groceries Do some research online to check for sales, half-priced or discounted items before you go

shopping. You can also buy in bulk and then share the costs with your neighbours or family. Remember to check details such as use-by dates and the policy on returning items, as well as how and when you can take delivery of your groceries if you buy online. 5. Put your bills onto direct debit You can have your bills paid automatically from your bank account by setting up a direct debit. Most suppliers have this facility, so go online, check your bill or ring your provider to get the details. If you normally pay your bills in person, you’ll save time and effort by not travelling to the post office (or wherever you pay your bills). And this way, you’ll qualify for the pay on time discounts that some providers offer, and you won’t have to check your bills tray every day to remember to pay them when they’re due. How long will your money need to last? These days we need to look after our finances for much longer than we’ve had to in the past. Now, if you’re a male aged 65, you could expect to live for another 19 years (to age 84) while a 65-year-old woman’s life expectancy is 87 - which is around 30 years longer than our Aussie ancestors of the 1800s. So it’s important to make sure your funds will last the distance - both now and in the future. Please contact us on 07 5447 7740 if you seek further assistance. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004, trading as Provision Wealth Management, are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. THE Kindness Club shared random acts of kindness with the community during a recent vacation care excursion. The kind deeds included: handing out handmade paper roses, donating books to Cooroy Family Medical for their children’s waiting area, delivering bookmarks to Cooroy Library, handing out coffee vouchers (very kindly donated by Nick from Jamaica Blue), buying morning tea for local businesses, donating a toy from home to Katie Rose Op Shop, giving IGA customers in-store vouchers, and sharing lots of smiles! The kindness was reciprocated through hugs and smiles, discounted goods to help with their kind deeds, some delicious

chocolate, funny jokes, and many, many thanks. The children were delighted by the warmth and friendliness of everyone they encountered! The community showed the children how kindness has a ripple effect. In club member Abby’s words “Kindness makes more kindness”. A Cooroy resident, and very special friend of The Kindness Club, made much of this possible. The club is very grateful for his generous donations and his ongoing support. Keep an eye out for future Kindness Club projects around town! “Little hearts can make a big difference”. Meet the new owners of Pomona Ag Supplies

Kelly , Barbara and Stuart (Ratter chose not to appear in the photo) MEET the new owners of Pomona Ag Supplies, Barbara and Stuart Irvine. Having lived in Tandur, near Traveston on 30 Acres for the last 11 years amongst sheep, cattle, alpacas, chooks, guinea fowl and their dogs and cats, and a lifelong passion for horses, they both have a real understanding of the needs of their customers. “So many of people who walk through the Pomona Ag doors are already friends due to our common interests and riding horses in the area,” Barbara says. “We are eager to get to know all our customers and are open to any suggestions they have in stocking our produce store. We have come in with great energy and are looking to make some changes, including growing the gardening side of the business and organising the store to allow for easier access for our shoppers.”

Mick and Louise Dunlop, former owners of Pomona Ag, had already built the business into a great stocked Ag Supply one stop shop where you can get anything from tanks, fencing, foods, vet care products, horse gear (rugs, saddle pads, halters and leads, grooming etc), gardening supplies, pipes, round bale hay , Lucerne, Point of lay chickens and so much more. “We are so lucky to have taken over from this couple who have not only left us with a great legacy in being honest, hardworking, and knowledgeable in all the products stocked here, but also their daughter Kelly, who is still working here with us and their cat, Ratter,” says Barbara. Pomona Ag Supplies is open Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm, Saturdays 8am – 12 noon, and deliveries Monday, Tuesday , Wednesday and Fridays.

ANYONE who knows Jennie knows she is a caring person. This is a lady who volunteered at a local aged-care facility for 5 years and has been a volunteer at the RSPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for the last 10 years. For someone who cares so much about the environment it is perhaps ironic that Jennie and her husband, Russell, received a massive blow from nature in the form of a termite attack on their home. It’s a story that Jennie would like to share in the hope that it will prevent others from making the same mistakes they did. “When we bought our house there was a Brisbane-based pest company that would come up and do annual termite inspections,” she explains. “But, with Russell and I both working, it became difficult to tee up convenient times – and this led to our biggest mistake. We cancelled the annual inspections.” “It was probably about two years after cancel-

ling that I noticed a bit of paint ripple here and there. I didn’t think too much about it, which was my second big mistake!” Jennie admits. “It was only when I knocked my elbow straight through a wall that I realised we had a big problem.” “We were devastated. It turned out that every room in the house, except two, had been affected by the termites. They had got in everywhere – eaten the frames in the walls, the skirting boards. It was a right mess!” “Our third mistake was putting off an inspection because we thought it was going to be very costly. As it turned out, the cost was peanuts compared to what we now have to pay to fix

everything. People need to realise that annual inspections are not expensive.” Jennie and Russell have since had an Exterra System installed by Cooroy Pest Control. “It gives us peace of mind,” says Jennie. “And the cost is absolutely reasonable. It’s also environmentally friendly. It doesn’t use any poison which is important because of all the wildlife in our garden. Paul and his team monitor the system – and it is working because they often find termites in the stations. If they weren’t getting stopped by the system they would be back in our house!” Find the full story on www.cooroypestcontrol.com.au

Scone Time – the new social scene for seniors MP Marty Hunt will be serenading the crowd next ‘Scone Time’

LOCAL chef and former restaurateur, Martin Duncan aka Sunshine Coast Foodie is hosting regular monthly Morning Teas called “Scone Time” for senior community residents. The next Scone Time will feature Marty Hunt MP serenading the crowd on Tuesday, August 14 in the recently refurbished Cooroy Memorial Hall. The monthly morning teas will then roll out into other halls across the Sunshine Coast with the assistance of local businesses and the CWA ladies. The event not only reignites life into these wonderful old halls but also help older people feel connected to their community. Inspired by 96-year-old UK resident Georgina, who, with no family remaining decided to involve herself with a local charity that hosted tea parties for people over the age of 75. Martin saw an opportunity to not only connect with older people, but also utilise the beautiful old venues around the Sunshine Coast. “I saw an interview with Georgina and thought

that surely the isolation that older people feel is a worldwide issue,” says Martin. “Our beautiful region has so many community halls, that, back in the day, would have come to life on Saturday nights for dances, special events and weddings,” explains Martin. “How exciting it will be to create social experiences for our senior folk in these unique special buildings,” he adds. Local businesses are invited to sponsor a monthly gathering, donate their time or simply pay it forward for a guest (and carer) to attend Scone Time as a one off attendance or more. By involving local businesses it is hoped that the event will generate a positive social outcome in the community and enough income to cover its running costs to ensure its ongoing success. The Cooroy Scone Time is on at 10am on the second Tuesday of each month at a nominal charge of $5.00 For bookings, or more information on becoming involved please phone 0473 902 261.

Diversity exhibition

That Eerie Light before the Storm

THE new solo exhibition, Diversity by Clare Riddington Jones, showing at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from August 4 – September 6, is an intriguing mix of flow art, palette knife, and soft blended acrylics. The work covers bold, colourful seascapes, abstract floral work, misty mountains and splendid birds in flight. Painting for over 20 years, Clare has exhibited in both Australia and New Zealand. Her art is in the hands of many international collectors and she has had numerous group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. Clare’s work is influenced by the beauty of the Sunshine Coast, the wonder of the Outback, her love of flowers and birds and her enthusiasm for experimenting with the different processes of applying paint to canvas.

Freemasonry - Taking good men, making them better

The newly renovated Lodge Room THE lodge room of The Cooroy Freemasons Centre has been newly renovated. In planning the renovation we wanted our lodge to be different. Whilst there are set requirements for the lodge layout, working with colour & decor we have transformed our lodge giving it a very unique style and feel as compared to other lodges in the area. In May we had a stall at Cooroy Fusion. This year there was a marked increase of interest expressed in Freemasonry. Our stall attendees were quite busy answering questions and passing out information brochures. The main questions we are asked, “What is Freemasonry?” We’re a philosophy of Life. This knowledge will show the path to become a better man. “What do Freemasons do?” We have regular meetings like any club. We plan social events, we discuss men issues, we educate and organise visits to other lodges.

“Is Freemasonry a religion?” No. Whilst we do believe in a creator, if you want spiritual guidance, please attend your local church. “What does Freemasonry do for the community?” Apart from giving the community better men, lodges take part in funding local needs. Through the charity arm of Qld Freemasons Masons “Hand Heart Pocket” we have access to considerable additional funding for community needs. Your lodge funds the local school bursaries. “How do I join?” Contact someone who is a Freemason. “To be one Ask one”. If you wish to know more about your local Masonic Lodge please visit us on Facebook:Cooroy Queen Alexandra#212. news Expressions of interest sought for shared workspace DEB Kelly will be holding an Open Day on 5 August, to seek interest from the community for a shared workspace to be located in the hall at 9 Station St Pomona, which she owns. “The plan is to have up to 10 sole trader style businesses using the facility for mainly computerbased businesses, as well as shared meeting spaces and rooms,” said Deb. “These concepts have become very popular more recently because of the lack of affordable commercial and office space, and the environmental appeal of sharing utilities, as well as the obvious benefits of networking, collaborating, and socialising outside the confines and distractions of the home office. “Tenders will be sought for initial occupancy, and permanent full-time tenants will be considered more favourably. Given many of these tenants will be new start up business, leases will be flexible based on the needs of the individual, but on average will work out to between $14 and $20 / day, which includes all amenities and services – bathroom, toilets, kitchenette; electricity, NBN broadband high speed internet, water, rates, gas. The joy of CoWorkspaces!! “It is early stages, however, this heritage listed building is in need of tender loving care, and this concept will see all of the funds generated reinvested back into saving the building, and building creative garden spaces on the land surrounding the building. Permaculture (tidy) and community edible organic gardens will feature strongly in the landscape design. “This is a great opportunity to come in as an inaugural tenant, and be involved in the development of the project. The inaugural tenants will be offered a substantial rental discount, depending on the level of involvement they would like to contribute to the project. Think of it as an ‘earthship’ business precinct.” For more information phone Deb Kelly on 0412 723 776 or email debkelly21@gmail.com

king of the mountain King of the Mountain Festival celebrates milestone

Barry Stewart (Race Steward), Ben Duffus, Meg Reeves, Sandy Bolton MP, Simon Flavelle (Bendigo Bank), Heather Manders (KOM Committee President)

KING Ben Duffus 23.30; QUEEN Meg Reeves 30.47 HARD working Lions Club volunteers once again welcomed postcardworthy winter sunshine over the July 21-22 weekend for the community-oriented King of the Mountain Festival. Situated in full view of Pomona’s iconic Mt Cooroora, patrons from near and afar enjoyed the company of friends and family and made the most of the festival’s attractions which included an inaugural Mountain Bike fun ride, family-friendly races, heritage markets, antiques fair, skate park competition and live music. A project of The Cooroy & Pomona Lion’s Club since 1979 and celebrating its 40th anniversary, the 2018 Bendigo Bank International Challenge King of the Mountain race on Sunday 22 July attracted spectators and athletic competitors from near and afar keen to enjoy some country hospitality and celebrate its renowned near-vertical 4.2 kilometre race up the mountain. With a field of 80 runners, last year’s top three runners again competed fiercely and took first, second and third place for the title. But, there can only be one winner. The Bendigo Bank International Challenge King of the Mountain went to last year’s runner-up, Ben Duffus from Brisbane who ran a time of 23mins:30secs. He was closely followed by last year’s winner, Mark Bourne from ACT (24:42) and New Zealand competitor Daniel Jones who again finished third with an equally impressive time of 25:50. The women’s results mirrored competitive times between the top three female competitors. With less than a minute between first and second place, the gruelling course saw 1st time entrant Meg Reeves run through the finish line ribbon with a time of 30:47 with Reesha Lewis from Beerwah placing second with a time of 31:46. Kim Beckinsale from Noosa Heads placed third with a time 32:49. This year’s Zinc 96.1 Prince and Princess race held on Saturday 21 July saw Page 14 - Cooroy Rag, August 1, 2018

almost 50 children compete along a 3.4km track designed to spur future champions. Aimed at children between 9-13 years of age, the honour of Prince of the Mountain went to local lad Zac Fennell, aged 12, (17:45) with the Princess title awarded to Ashby Pearson from Coolum Beach, aged 11 (19:33). Run by volunteers, the multifaceted event continues to enjoy great success as a major fundraiser for the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club. Many current volunteers have more than a decade of service to the event including Barry Stewart who has been with the event during its entire 40 year stewardship by the Lions club. “The Cooroy-Pomona Lions want to acknowledge the long term generosity of our major sponsors including the Bendigo Bank, our funding partners Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa, and the ongoing support of local businesses”, said event organiser Heather Manders. “Without them King of the Mountain would not be the hallmark event it has become for our region and we are delighted the local community continue to enjoy the festival’s program of events”, he said. After celebrating the success of the event and those of its participants, many long serving Lions organisers will enjoy a wellearned break before arranging a special meeting about the future of the famous race to be held on Wednesday 22 August from 6pm until 7pm at the Cooroy Pomona Lions Den – 2 Mountain St, Pomona. All members of the community are invited to attend to have their say on the future of the race and seek information about the many volunteering opportunities crucial to its implementation. To review event highlights or to enquire about sponsorships or any other participation opportunities for the 2019 festival, head to their website: kingofthemountain.com.au or visit the King of the Mountain Facebook page. Held on the 4th Sunday in July each year, the internationally famous and community-oriented King of the Mountain Festival operates as a free not-for profit event thanks to the generosity of its sponsors and funding partners. Continued funding from Bendigo Bank and its Pomona Community Bank branch, Zinc 96.1FM, Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa is testament to its enduring popularity as a hallmark hinterland event. Many local businesses also offer their support through in-kind donations and sponsorships for the community focussed event aimed at supporting local Lions’ charities and promoting the Pomona and Noosa region. The King of the Mountain Committee and members of the Lions Club give their time freely to make this event happen and to support the local community. Many current volunteers have more than a decade of service to the event including Barry Stewart who has been with the event during its entire 40 year stewardship by the Lions club. To continue its success, the event needs new volunteers to contribute to the many facets of the event that require planning and implementation. A special meeting about the future of the famous race will be held on Wednesday 22 August from 6-7pm at the Cooroy Pomona Lions Den – 2 Mountain St, Pomona. Members of the community are being urged to attend and have their say on the future of the race and seek information about the many volunteering opportunities crucial to its implementation. You may only have a couple of hours to spare on the day, or be willing to contribute a couple of hours per week in the lead up to next year’s event. All help is gladly received and enquiries and feedback are welcome. No RSVP is required to attend. For enquiries, contact Heather Manders on 0411 114 077.

health Let’s learn something about head lice

COOROY RAG

THERE is a lot of misguided information about the nature of head lice and the types of treatments available for managing the problem. Head lice can be extremely frustrating for parents/carers as they are a very common occurrence amongst school aged children and they often have reoccurring problems. So here are some fast facts for you: • Head Lice are small wingless insects that are found on the human head, living on the hair and feeding by sucking blood from the scalp. • They cannot fly or jump but have strong claws and will swing from head to head through close contact such as cuddling, playing or working closely together. • They can only survive up to 48 hours away from a human host; this is because they need to regularly feed on human blood or they will die from dehydration. • They cannot live or breed on animals, clothes, toys, furniture, carpet, or bedding; they can only survive on the human head. • Infestation is not related to poor hygiene and there is no preference for clean or dirty hair. • They do not carry or transmit disease and have been around for thousands of years. What is the easiest and most effective way to detect headlice? At LiveLife, we recommend the ‘conditioner & comb method’ to do this, you will need white conditioner, a normal comb, a fine tooth comb and white tissues. Here’s what to do: 1. Apply enough conditioner to dry hair to cover the scalp & hair from roots to tips. 2. Using the normal comb, detangle hair to distribute the conditioner evenly & divide into four sections. 3. Using the fine tooth comb, comb hair from roots to tips and wipe the comb on the tissue after each stroke to check for lice & eggs. 4. Continue process until the whole head had been checked and the majority of the conditioner is off the hair. 5. Ensure that all the tissues are placed in a plastic bag, tied up and put in the rubbish bin. 6. This process should be repeated weekly on

all members of the family/household if infestation remains. What methods are available to treat head lice? Regardless of the treatment used, the only way to eradicate head lice is by removing the lice and eggs (dead or alive). There are two methods of treatment that can be used, and it is important to note that there is no need to treat if lice or eggs are not present. Conditioner & Comb Technique: • As explained, this is the best way of detecting head lice but can also be used as a treatment. This is the safest option as it contains no chemicals and should be used especially if the person has sensitive skin, is under 2 years of age, pregnant, breastfeeding, or has sores on the scalp. Note this method will not kill/remove eggs. • This method is a cheaper alternative but should be repeated daily for 10 consecutive days until no live lice are found. Medicated products: • Should not be used in children under 2 years of age or in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Care should also be taken for use in people who suffer from asthma, allergies or eczema (always check with your pharmacist). • Where a parent/carer is pregnant or breastfeeding and they are treating their child, they must ensure that gloves are worn as the chemicals can still be absorbed through the skin. • If you were to look at the lifecycle of head lice, you could see that eggs hatch in around 7-10 days; therefore a second treatment should be applied 7-10 days after the initial treatment. FIND out how: Saturday, 4th August, 104:30pm. Hormones…the conversation is not clear. How do they work and why am I not feeling so good? And what about that unspoken word: Menopause. The first hormone popped up under the microscope in 1902, thousands of years after classical Eastern medicines could specifically identify them. However, both Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine give us a practical and comprehensive context in which to understand how they work. In this workshop, we will look at some causes of infertility, painful or irregular periods, why there can be extreme symptoms around menopause, how our lives impact the health of our hor-

mones, some good food to eat and practical tools to bring your life into balance. We will explore hormones through the lens of Western Science but gain an understanding of how to identify what is causing the problem and how to address it through the eyes and knowledge of Ayurvedic Medicine. Really learn how to work with yourself and how to move through life with more ease. The day includes a Vegetarian lunch, chai and some handy notes to take away. COOROY RAG Private & Spacious Home

With ceilings stretching into great heights featuring stunning exposed beams, this home feels open and spacious. This home is designed with big spaces for when you want to downsize without feeling you are living in a shoe box. Three massive bedrooms, with abundant storage. The two guest bedrooms have built in wardrobes and the master has a lovely walk in robe. The master bedroom also has that ensuite everyone wants, so much room and privacy in here you might not want to leave the bedroom! Of course, what will get you out of the room is the fantastic layout of the rest of the home. With air conditioning for summer and the cozy wood fire heater for winter, this low set home makes for very comfortable living. There is great natural lighting with windows and doors placed to capture plenty of breezes. The large modern kitchen is designed with storage and work space in mind. You won’t have to stack everything on top of each other, there is plenty of storage in cupboards not to mention the walk in pantry. Guests have a lovely centrally located bathroom and separate toilet, so everyone is catered for here. Outside can only be described as your own private piece of the hinterland countryside paradise.

Apparently, there are neighbours, but they are nowhere to be seen. The large acreage block is fully fenced and has established low maintenance gardens. With both tank and town water, there is no excuse not to have the garden of your dreams. Already there is an established vege patch. Who doesn’t like home grown veges? The wrap around verandah allows you to enjoy the property from every angle. From one side you can enjoy the views and from another the in ground pool and entertaining area. The attached garage with separate entrance currently doubles as a home office, but options are there for multiple uses. If you have a caravan or boat and you are sick of backing it into storage, this property solves that issue with a drive through triple bay lockable 12m x 8m shed with underground power and phone. It is an absolute pleasure to present this property and with it being walking distance to the charming township of Pomona, we don’t expect to be showing it for long. Don’t miss out, inspect today. Priced at $695,000. Please call Wayne Colley on 0447 748 408 from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland for further details or drop in to see one of our friendly staff at 16a Maple Street, Cooroy or 8 Reserve Street, Pomona.

COOROY RAG

Community sponsors keep Eumundi Dragons firing! THANKS to the fantastic support from a broad range of community organisations and businesses the future looks bright for the mighty Eumundi Dragons. The 2018 season is proving one of the most successful in the club’s 10-year history,” says Club President Doug Toms. “Each of our four teams has been very competitive and have gained the respect of all opposition players and officials and that has been helped by all the wonderful local support we have received that takes the financial pressure off members. “From grants such as the one from the Sunshine Council that paid for the sun smart 2018 season marquee to direct financial assistance as well as the ‘in-kind’ gifts from local Eumundi businesses, the Dragons family have seen a marked increase in sponsors. With 13 being the very real lucky number for the hinterland Junior Rugby Union Club. “With on-going support from Yandina to Cooroy’s Bendigo Bank Community Bank with other sponsors including; the Imperial Hotel, Noosa Hinterland Realty, Templeton Ginger, Eumundi Meats, The Bakehouse, Eumundi Village Pharmacy, Heartwood Financial, Sunshine Toyota Currimundi, Brush and Bristle Barbershops, Cooroy Queen Alexander Lodge, Leo Wiles Photography and the Eumundi Aquatic Centre. Their assistance from these organisations enables the club to provide an awarding winning family oriented Rugby experience for all players and their supporters” adds Doug. “On field and off from the subsidised strips to opening a bank account, buy a house or land, have a swim, receive sound financial advice, have a haircut, purchase award-winning meat or gorgeous deco-

rated pastries and bread, or being served by friendly staff filling your script or serving a succulent meal enjoying a meal all on our doorstep. “It’s just a handful of the reasons all of the Dragons players and coaching staff wear the distinctive club playing and dress kits proudly displaying the names and logos of all the valued sponsors.” U7s: It is such a joy to watch these kids improve every week! After a 3 week break the U7s were keen to strap on the boots and take to the field against Uni. Zach opened up the scoring with a well deserved try in the corner. Billie’s quick hands and Brooklyn’s fancy footwork contributed to the U7’s progressing up the field with style. George and Daisy, kept Uni offence at bay, utilising their determination and speed to make some impressive tags. Finn and Brodie are showing a great understanding of the game by consistently spreading out and positioning themselves to seal up the holes and stop the offensive drive. Player of the match went to Billie for his try scoring and improvement in passing the ball around. Well done Billie and great work U7s! U9s: The Eumundi Dragon’s U9’s played an excellent match this Saturday. They continued to establish themselves as a tough competitor to face in competition. Individual efforts have blossomed into team play with all players contributing in both defensive and offensive play. The boys are coming together as group and encompassing what it means to be team players with respect for the game, each other and members of the opposing team. Player of the match went to Jett Herbert for his amazing effort and multiple trys. Congratulations to the entire team for a hard fought and entertaining match.

COOROY RAG Golf: Sunshine Coast, Burnett and District Women’s Championships

Cutters Corner A fired up Yandina made the trip to Tewantin to face the Cutters in what shaped up as a pivotal clash coming into finals time. A Luke Martin try early was matched by the Raiders before a steamrolling try by Gus Sullivan took the score to 8-4. From there the Cutters took control. With the forwards on top Luke Martin was able to cross just before half time which was converted by Jake Scanlan taking the score to 14-4. Some solid defence after the break saw Jake Scanlan cross for a double before young Reef Carlile crossed taking the score to 28-4. A lot of positives came out the game with Jarrod Davis impressing along with Nathan Roon, Cody Mairu & Lachlan Proctor. The 3 votes went to

Jake Scanlan, 2 votes Jarrod Davis & 1 votes to Ricky Brown. A clash with old rivals Kilcoy at Beachmere was what round 14 had in store for the lads. Down on players didn’t help the situation with Kilcoy racing at an early 16 nil lead. Full credit to the guys who put a jersey on they didn’t get overawed. Jake Scanlan crossed after some smart blind side play leaving the score 16-6 at the break. Not much went right after the break with several players sustaining injuries. Jake Scanlan crossed for a 2nd try but a 90 metre intercept try to Kilcoy sealed the match. Final score 28-12 to Kilcoy. No player let the side down with David Fray getting the 3 votes, Josh Javernig 2 votes & Jake Scanlan 1.

500g beef strips (I used rump steak) 200ml salt-reduced tamari 6 spring onions (90g), trimmed and cut into 3cm pieces 300g bok choy Marinate the beef in tamari for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick wok over high heat (if not non-stick, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, 43 calories, and carefully swirl to coat the sides of the wok) Roughly divide the beef into thirds, Stir-fry the first batch for 1 to 2 minutes or until the beef is browned and just cooked. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with the beef in two more batches, reheating the wok (and adding a little more coconut oil if needed) between each batch. Cooking the beef in batches is very important as it seals the meat, keeping in the juices. If you add too much meat at once, the wok will lose its heat and the meat will stew and become tough. Remove all the meat from the wok. Add the spring onions and stir-fry for 3 minutes, or until tender, adding the bok choy in the last minute. Add back the beef and toss together. Season with cracked pepper to serve.
