Cooroy pool turns up the heat AFTER years of discussion, the dream of installing a heat pump in Cooroy Pool has finally become a reality. Determined locals and committed advocates from Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club have worked long and hard to have a heat pump installed in the pool to allow swimming during our cooler months. On the back of a community forum hosted by the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank in November last year, locals discussed and then voted on future community projects that would benefit the town and surrounding communities. One of those projects was the heat pump for the local pool that will be proudly put into action just in time for launch of the Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club upcoming season. Club president, Lance McFayden said the timing couldn’t be better as the Dolphins prepare for their annual sign on day on 25 August. “We couldn’t be more excited about what this heat pump will bring to our club and our community. Not since the club began in 1975 can I say we have been more excited!” he said. “Without the support of Sunshine Coast Council and the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank this simply couldn’t have happened. Their $20,000 and $7,000 contributions respectively mean the heat pump will ensure continuity of temperature throughout the season. No longer can we use cold water as an excuse for getting out of bed for our 5.30am squad sessions. “The pools solar heating

Bendigo Bank Cooroy Manager Fiona Hutchings celebrates the heating of Cooroy Pool with members of the Dolphin Swim Club system will continue to be used, but the heat pump guarantees that no matter what the weather we can maintain ideal swimming temperatures whenever needed. Learn to swim sessions will now be a very comfortable temperature for even the youngest children,” Mr. McFayden added. The manager of the Cooroy Community Bank branch said she was thrilled the Cooroy Community Forum has brought the first of

many positive outcomes. “When we hosted the forum our hope was that we could find out more of what the Cooroy and surrounding communities wanted. The opportunity to partner council in making the Cooroy Pool heat pump a reality is really exciting. We were also able to identify a few more projects we will be able to share more about in the months ahead, but I’m proud our Community Bank is part of this project”, Ms.

Hutchings said. “There are currently more than 300 Community Bank branches across Australia that have returned more than $80 million to support local communities just like Cooroy. Our hope is that more people will bank with us so we can keep giving back to our town in ways just like this,” she concluded. The addition of the heat pump also means that the pool can be opened up for additional public use. Ex-

tended aqua aerobics sessions are planned and lap swimming for those people keen to swim but not wanting to join a squad will continue to be available. The club also offers learn to swim classes for all ages and 4 levels of squad training for children and adults and the Cooroy Dolphins swim squad will start on Monday, 3 September. Annual General Meeting Cooroy LAC

The Games The Olympic Games are over, and what a show it’s been, All the world’s best athletes, including Australia’s Gold and Green. But what has happened to our sport, this obsession with winning Gold, If you didn’t win one, you were left out in the cold. The winner of a Silver, could be labelled as a failure, Inferring that they’d let down, we folk back in Australia. A Bronze of course, was hardly worth a mention, The media were ruthless, and gave it scant attention. Everyone was blamed, the Government, the teams, the coaches, No one was spared by the media’s cruel reproaches. We were way down on the medal list, amid undeserved cries of shame, Someone had to pay the price, and wear the so-called blame. The Olympics have surely become, a thing of financial glitter, With countries pitted against each other, recriminations sometimes bitter. Commentators and officials declare, it’s money that is lacking, And all insist the wins will come, with increased financial backing. They overlook the fact that some of the medals won, Were won by athletes, with no sponsorship from anyone. Some commentators declare an official inquiry should be held, To find the reasons why, the athletes had no expectedly excelled. Ignoring that in some events, the margin of medal defeat, Was a fraction of a second, less than a heart’s quick beat, Why don’t these critics, cease their weeping and wailing, Their insistence that our athletes, are seemingly all failing. Forget about the medals, don’t care how many are won, Just admire their athletic achievements, how they have swum or run. Look forward to the next Games, in Rio so glamorous, And let the praise for our athletes, be fair and magnanimous. Jim Dunstan

LAST chance for Cooroy to get on board Free Noosa petitionCooroy residents have just a few days to sign and return the petition giving them a say in whether the area gets its local council back. A number of Cooroy people were unaware they could take part in the petition, thanks to a misleading Sunshine Coast TV report that suggested Cooroy, like Eumundi, will not be offered the chance to de-amalgamate. Local Councillor Tony Wellington says he’s grateful that the

Cooroy Rag can help put the record straight. He says everyone in the old Noosa Shire area – and that includes Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Boreen Point and Tewantin – can, and should, sign the petition. Cr Wellington stresses that the petition is not the final vote. “It just allows us to go the next stage, which means that all the facts, the costings, and the pros and cons of de-amalgamation will be made public – so people can make up their own minds.” The division 12

Councillor says even those concerned about the costs, or who haven’t made up their minds, should still sign the petition. “This is the way we can get a reliable Queensland Treasury Corporation analysis of the costs, including a five-year financial forecast.” “There is a good deal of scare-mongering happening at the moment. I urge residents to fill in a postcard because that is the best way to ensure they get the facts.” Cooroy residents have only a few days to sign and return

YEAR 11 Noosa District State High School student Patrick Lovett was awarded the 2012 Defence Technical Scholarship (DTS). Patrick’s DTS scholarship is worth $2000 and he now has the opportunity to apply to take part in one of the five day Defence Experience tour programs visiting the recruit and technical training schools for each of the Navy, Army and Air Force. To be successful for the Scholarship, Patrick was required to complete an application demonstrating his knowledge of technical trades within the Australian Defence Force. Patrick’s application was chosen from over 2300 submissions Australia wide. The DTS Program provides financial incentive to eligible Year 11 and 12 students to stay at school and finish their education, whilst undertaking Maths and English and a trade/technical subject, which leads to work within the Australian Defence Force. Patrick is to be congratulated and the Noosa High community wishes him further success in his study and training.

If you are frustrated by things not getting done around you to your liking - the fault could lie with you. Delegating can be problematic in the largest corporates as well as in privately owned companies and the fault often lies with management in not communicating well. Activity doesn’t equal productivity. Being busy isn’t clever, being productive is. Body and mental stress can be reduced with better workplace delegation and communication. So why do frustrations exist in the workforce? The first thing to recognise is that people are not like you. People approach things differently and the sooner you realise that, the easier life becomes. Here are a few simple tips for effective delegation: 1. When you delegate a task, ask your team member to repeat back to you what the task is. This way you can pick up any miscommunications and check that your request has been understood.

2. Ensure your team members understand that the task isn’t complete until a response is returned to the Task Director. Until you know that a task is competently done you have not delegated effectively. Similarly seek feedback on the longer term tasks. You need to hear back on progress to ensure that all is on track and to avert delays. 3. Disengaged staff harm a business. If staff are not interested in servicing customers beyond expectations, performing duties well, the business will suffer and ultimately so will bottom line. A good starting point is to put the right people in the right jobs, and allow them to fulfil their core strengths. In a competitive marketplace, most people won’t stay if they are not happy. We tend to be good at what we enjoy. Whether you are a small business owner or manage staff for other owners, you need to perfect the art of delegation. Ensure your staff understands –

• Who the work is being prepared for specifically? • For what purpose are they doing it? • When is it needed by? • What format is required? • Where should it be saved or stored? • How long is it expected to take? Improved delegation could boost your productivity. If you have any questions about any form of business or finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigo adelaide.com.au

QCWA celebrates 90 years

QUEENSLAND Countrywomens’ Association State wide will celebrated 90 years of community service on August 11. The tea and scone image with which the QCWA has been saddled with for a long time has little relevance to its real role. With over 300 branches state wide and a total membership of over 4000 throughout Queensland, they have improved conditions for women and children in the country. Cooroy Branch of QCWA celebrated 85 years of service in this community on March 10. “We offer friendship,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR IN recent months, a rash of uncharacteristic crimes have occurred in the Cooroy district. I refer to premises being broken into and thefts. These crimes have resulted in personal loss, anguish and frustration by residents who have fallen victim to these sometimes malicious but certainly senseless events. Some organisations have suffered on more than one occasion, with the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club broken into no less than 6 times in the last 2 and a half months. This club, recently devastated by the cyclone and floods in Feb ,has found it necessary to bar their windows and doors and alarm the premises in their efforts to keep their club secure. All residents of Cooroy should be made aware of the potential damage and possible loss of property that exists until the culprits are apprehended. Their identity is known, but, like every other frustrating aspect of this business they cannot be named. The police will catch them, we have no doubt, but until then be vigilant and please report any activity you consider suspicious. All information will assist in ridding our community of this scourge. THE bright new chapter in the future of Mary Valley continues to be written with the release today of the Mary Valley Economic Development Strategy prospectus. Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP, said he hoped this document, would attract investors to the Mary Valley and the wider area. “This prospectus highlights key sites in the area, which are available for economic development opportunities.” Mr Gibson said. “There are huge opportunities for the valley, its existing businesses and residents. This is an important step forward in the process of restoring sustainable economic development.” “As locals we know we what a world class location the Mary Valley is to work and live, and now this prospectus will assist in promoting the valley for investment and boost agribusiness and tourism opportunities as we seek to transform the region into a ‘corridor of sustainable growth’ after the failed Traveston Crossing dam debacle.” Mr Gibson said the prospectus captures the outcome of the extensive consultation by many groups and paints a picture for those who can help us achieve our vision for the Mary Valley. “As chair of the Mary Valley Economic Development Advisory Group I will be working hard to build on the good work already undertaken to realise the opportunities for the valley and the region.” he said. A copy of the prospectus can be obtained by contacting Mr Gibson’s office on 5482 3651 or email Gympie@parliament.qld.gov.au

news Students interview author

NOOSA District State High School students were given the opportunity to interview author Alice Pung at the Cooroy Library during the Reality Bites non-fiction literary festival. The students who interviewed Alice Pung are currently studying the author’s book, Unpolished Gem in their English classes. The students asked some interesting and insightful questions for the interview that was broadcast last Saturday on ABC Coast FM. English Head of Department Louise

Francis was thrilled to have her students interviewed on the radio. “I’m very proud of them and very grateful to Alice,” Ms Francis said. Five easy things to do with a tax refund

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

services include

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management JUST a month into the new financial year the conscientious among us will have already submitted their tax return and are likely to be found shining their financial halos and breathing a sigh of relief. Others are screeching towards the 31 October deadline for tax return lodgement, hopefully pulling together paperwork and booking in time to visit the accountant. Whatever camp people are in, most love to think about what to do with any refund that comes their way. While the sales are oh-so-tempting for some, others will want to use any money they get back to get ahead financially. Even if the refund is only small it is worth seriously considering how to use it and remind ourselves of an old proverb: if you mind your cents, the dollars take care of themselves. Here are five smart moves that could see you get considerably more value from your tax refund this year. Chad’s smart things to do a with a tax refund: 1. Reduce bad debt – consider using your tax refund to pay off high interest debt, such as credit cards or personal loans. It’s worth paying this debt down as quickly as you can as interest rates on credit cards, for example, can be as high as 20 per cent. 2. Pump it into your mortgage - for people with a home loan it is definitely worthwhile making a lump sum payment. On a mortgage of $350,000 at 6.5 per cent interest, tipping $2,000 into your loan could cut $5,270 off the overall interest over the term of the loan. ^ Another option is parking the cash in a mortgage offset account, so you’re reducing interest but are still able to access the money

quickly if you need it. 3. Ease education costs - the cost of private secondary education in Australia has skyrocketed by 264 per cent over the past 27 years, so it could be worth putting your tax refund towards school fees or education costs.^^ If you have older children at university, another option would be to help them pay off some of their education debt. 4. Boost your super - investing in your super can be a smart idea if you are eligible for the Government co-contribution. For those who are eligible, the Government will match every dollar of non-concessional (personal after-tax) contributions with a 50 cent Government co-contribution to super – up to a maximum of $500. There are not too many investment strategies that can achieve a 50 per cent short-term return. 5. Make a spouse contribution - if your spouse is not working, or earns less than $10,800 (phases out at $13,800) per year, you may be entitled to claim an 18 per cent tax offset (up to $540) if you make a contribution to their super. On a $2,000 contribution, that’s a tax offset of up to $360. This strategy will allow you to get more value from your tax refund and help your spouse build their super for retirement. So if a tax refund arrives in your account this year, take a deep breath, step away from the sales and think about some of the smarter ways you can put this once-a-year windfall to good use. ^ Figures based on a 25 year term home loan, with a $2000 lump sum paid five years into the loan. ^^ AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report: “Prices these days - the cost of living

IN late May the Cooroy Community Kindy held its annual Obstacle Course Fundraiser & family picnic. Fortunately the rain held off and it was a great event. Thank-you to the parents and families who came along to support the children. The children were incredibly enthusiastic (IF ONLY we could bottle that energy!!) and the joy and pride on their faces as Diana announced when each had completed the 5 laps was delightful. Cooroy Rotary Changeover ROTARY Changover: Saturday 30th June witnessed the annual Changeover of the Cooroy Rotary Club when outgoing President, Cath Lyndon handed over the Charter to the 2012-13 President, David Cramb. About 60 people were present for the occasion held at the Restaurant Locale at the Bowls Club. David, who lives at Ridgewood is no stranger to Cooroy, having been born and educated here. Since, then, he has lived in Townsville and Mount Isa before returning “home” a few years ago. “I am honoured to have been asked to be

President of a Club whose past members have included people I respected as a youth growing up in Cooroy, including Mr Reg Bryant and Dr Roy Luck”, David said. “I now have the chance to contribute something to the community that gave me my early start in life. “Even though Cooroy has changed since my childhood days, it is still a great place.” At the Changeover, outgoing President, Cath Lyndon outlined the Club’s activities and achievements over the past 12 months. These included the founding of an Interact Club at the Noosa Dis-

trict State High School. They have 17 members and Ben May is their President. The club members have given 1500 hours of service to our community and youth programs this year. A strong effort for a small club of 30 members. We were also blessed to host an ex-

change student, Miss Kajsa Berggund, from Sweden. Kajsa attended school at Noosa High and studied Marine science. Five Rotary families acted as host families for Kajsa. They also, hosted Kajsa’s dad, sister and a friend when they came to visit Australia. Unfortunately, we had to

send Kajsa back to Sweden on the 11th July. She will be missed by the club. Handing the club over to David, I know it is in good hands, and we will all work together to make a difference for our own community, people in need, education and the wider world. We can make a difference.

COOROY RAG Permaculture Noosa DR Kirsten Small will be talking on ““Peak Oil, Parturition and Permaculture” at Memorial Hall, Maple St, Cooroy, Thursday, 16 August, 2012 from 7pm. Permaculture is often defined a ‘Permanent Culture’. If we are designing a culture for permanence then we need to factor in the need for our own reproduction. This includes our ability to set limits on our population growth, and how to grow healthy mothers and babies. We have become used to ways of reproductive health that have been made possible because of cheap fossil fuels. With the approach of peak oil, how are we going to plan new ways of living to ensure the health and wellbeing of our future generations? Kirsten Small is a local obstetrician who has been asking herself these questions,

and tonight will share her thoughts on some of the answers. Elisabeth Fekonia has been fermenting her own food for nearly twenty years; and is there anything that she hasn’t tried to ferment? Elisabeth will be talking about the advantages of fermented foods in the diet and how to go about making some for yourself. There will be a demonstration of how to make sauerkraut as well as plenty of other foods available for taste testing. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. For further information phone Judith on 5471 1982.

ANITA Harris, Solicitor, is the proud principal of her own law firm in Garnet Street in Cooroy. After working in the industry for over 10 years, she took the opportunity for a new challenge and opened her small, but burgeoning firm at the start of July. Anita, originally from Townsville, moved to the Sunshine Coast area with her husband 6 years ago, and quickly felt right at home in the

Tewantin/Noosa area. Their young family is now settled and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. “My first love was music, not law. I was halfway through my music degree when I decided to change to law for something a little more challenging. It wasn’t long before I realized I really enjoyed it and wanted to follow that path for my career, and I haven’t regretted it for a moment since,” says

Anita. There are many facets of law and Anita’s main focus is on family law, which includes matrimonial and de facto property division and parenting arrangements. “I am working towards attaining my specialist qualifications in family law, as this is an area that I feel passionate about and would like to concentrate on in the future. However the legal profession doesn’t come in a neat package, and I like the challenge that each new client and each new case brings me - it keeps me thinking, reading and learning constantly from day to day. “I’m very encouraged by the new business and clients that I’ve gained even in the first few weeks. I look forward to expanding more and more and meeting the local community through my work.” Anita and her team welcome all enquiries for legal assistance. Anita Harris, Solicitor is open Monday to Friday at 13 Garnet Street, Cooroy. Their office telephone is 5447 7861.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North

PART of what we do in the SES is Community Education where we visit organisations, groups and schools to talk to them about our roles and how we undertake them. Members of our Unit talk to organisations and groups such as Rotary, some CWA annual general meetings, Lions and community groups. Schools are usually a lot of fun to visit, particularly the primary schools and a number of our members recently visited Noosaville State School to give a presentation to the Grade Ones there. The children were very intrigued with the Cooroy truck with all of its lights, and various equipment. At the Exhibition in Brisbane this year, from 16th to 18th August, members of the SES will be manning a stand, The Perspex Box Initiative, to assist members of the public on questions in relation to disasters. There will be different people from the public over the 10 days of the Ekka who will live in the box for 3 days- to encourage the Can you Survive 3 Days? Campaign. Like all regions across Australia, there is the risk of a disaster or emergency happening on the Sunshine Coast. If you are fit and healthy it is your responsibility to prepare your home, yourself, your pets and others to minimise disruption to your lifestyle. You may be able to ‘shelter in place’, either at home or at work so, your

ability to securely see out the emergency will be enhanced by relying on items you’ve included in your emergency kit. Now would be a good time to prepare an emergency kit well ahead of any impending disaster. The emergency kit should include, fresh water and non-perishable food for three days, can opener, first aid kit, portable radio with spare batteries, torch, sturdy gloves, mobile phone and charger, essential medication, important documents in sealed bags, cash, baby formula and nappies if appropriate, waterproof bags and toiletries. Include items you’d need for at least three days in case of disruption to essential services such as power and water supplies. Also, include the equipment you’ll need to prepare meals with no power. Keep your kit in a waterproof storage container and store in an easy-to-access location. Check your kit every three months to stock up and rotate supplies to ensure provisions are fresh and safe to use. We are always looking for new members and the next intake will be early next year, in February 2013. What fathers contribute to child development FATHERS who are active in their child’s life will have a tremendous effect on their child’s development— both cognitively and socially. Having the experience of two involved parents adds variety and dimension to the child’s experience of the world. Researchers stress that parents must be actively and positively involved in their child’s life to contribute to the healthy development of their child. Let’s take a look at what scientists believe that fathers add to their child’s development in a unique and important way. Fathers and social development. Fathers who tended to hold their babies facing out reported that they did this because “it’s easier for the baby to see the world.” In over 20 years of studying fathers, Dr. Ross Parke states that men have a tendency to allow their infants more freedom to explore, which appears to support the development of independence in their children. Fathers who actively play with their children appear to reinforce the notion of emotional self-control in their children and help their children learn to recognize the emotional cues of others. Young children whose fathers were involved in their lives tended to make better, longer-lasting friendships across their lifespan. Children raised with responsible fathers tended to get along better with their peers, be academically

successful, stay in school longer, use drugs and alcohol less frequently, and didn’t become pregnant or get someone else pregnant. Fathers enjoy practical ways of playing. Men tend to do more practical, educational activities with their children rather than talking about what they are doing with their children. Fathers like to expand their child’s horizons by playing with toys in non-traditional ways. A father might take a cup and place it on his head or throw a block rather than stack it. Fathers are much more comfortable with physical play at any age but especially as their children grow older. Fathers and cognitive development. Infants raised in father-absent homes did less reaching, grasping and following of objects, and playing with new toys and objects in their environment. Researchers have determined that active fathers have children who score higher on tests of verbal skills, in problem-solving tasks, and in social situations. Fathers who played peek-a-boo and tossed the ball with their children had children who scored higher on cognitive tests than did children whose fathers were non-active or absent. Some researchers believe that active father involvement has a positive effect on their child’s math skills.

The problem is that due to their rudimentary output regulation, when they are working below the rated load of the generator the line voltage can increase from a nominal 230/240VAC to over 260VAC (in some cases up to 400VAC)! The portable sine wave inverter generator unit is petrol powered and differs from cheaper units, in that the engine drives a DC alternator. A pure sine wave inverter then converts the DC to a stable pure sine 230VAC, suitable for appliances including sensitive electronics. No matter what the load is on the generator, the output

remains at 230VAC 50Hz. The added benefit is that the petrol motor is far better matched to the load, reducing overall size, keeping engine speed in line with the load, reducing noise and increasing fuel efficiency. For more information on this generator or for other great Father’s Day gift ideas visit Cooroy Inks & Electronics, Maple Street, Cooroy.

Father’s Day WEEKEND SATURDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER

COOROY Golf Club welcomes ‘Rae’s Kitchen’ to the club. Since opening her eatery at Cooroy Golf Club at the end of last week, Rae Ellis has been delighted with the feedback so far. Rae, who moved from New Zealand 2 years ago, to semiretire in Cooroy, started out behind the bar at the Cooroy Golf Club. A qualified chef, Rae began whipping up some home made cakes to go with the fresh bean coffee the club was offering, which proved to be a hit with the golfing patrons. Soon after she was catering for functions, and when the opportunity came up to take over the clubs kitchen it just seemed like the next step. All Rae’s cakes are freshly made by her and with the $5 coffee and cake deal, which includes social membership the club has certainly noticed a fresh intake of patrons. Rae is a great believer in offering her diners what they want, and that is a great tasting menu with everything under $10. Everything from the daily special, the pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, wraps, salads, burgers with chips and fish and chips are all made fresh by Rae. So if you’re driving by the Golf club, pull in and have lunch, you will be happy you did. Rae’s Kitchen is open for lunch Wednesday to Saturdays and is also is available to cater for functions.

Make an Impact this Father’s Day TRAIN TOGETHER WITH DAD

A little nurturing goes a long way with Dad! FOR most Dads, it is not until crisis, upset or disease sets in that they consider nurturing their bodies and giving a little back to themselves. Other ‘things’; work, family, commitments, people and responsibilities can often seem a lot more important than taking the time out to rebalance and nurture our own bodies. However, frequently taking the time to pamper and nurture yourself can not only greatly affect your day to day enjoyment of life and how you handle stressful situations, it can also prevent disease and slow down the aging process. Massage is a great way to nurture yourself as it particularly assists in preventing stress, disease and premature aging through; increasing blood circulation, boosting your immune system, maintaining joint and muscle condition and also balancing your mental and emotional states via promoting relaxation. During a massage we spend time in a state of relaxation which promotes the release of naturally calming biochemicals in the body that combat stress. This can assist us to think more clearly and become emotionally balanced, which in turn helps us deal with life’s events and challenges much more effectively, positively affecting our relationships, careers and sense of inner happiness. Ancient Chinese Remedial Massage is an immensely beneficial type of massage that focuses on rebalancing the whole person. Acupressure points are used to affect the mental and emotional states along with many relaxing techniques that benefit the internal organs and external muscles tendons and joints of the body. To promote the understanding that ‘a little nurturing goes a long way with Dad’, Maple St Acupuncture and Natural Medicine is offering half hour massages for everyone from the 1st of August until the middle of September for a low $35. Spots are filling fast so call now to book or enquire on 07 5442 5526.

Adopt a digger A local Cooroy lady has been researching our local WW1 Diggers as part of the Adopt a Digger group for some time now, as the group is trying to get a story together for each one, before the centenary in 2014 so they’re not just a name on a memorial. As part of a European trip, she will be visiting the Western Front battlefields shortly and placing poppies or a Remembrance Cross on each of the 40 graves and memorials she has found so far. If there are any relatives of those Diggers still living in the area, and they would like her to add a her at: diggerresearch@gmail.com or telephone 0422 616901 for more information. Celebrate FATHER’S DAY Serve dad the pefect barbecued steak TRADITIONALLY, the barbecue tends to be dad’s domain, but this Father’s why not let him kick back, fire up the grill and surprise him with the perfect steak. Here’s some tips to make sure you impress him with a tender, juicy steak that’s full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Step 1: Preheat the barbecue grill or flatplate on mediumhigh. Brush both sides of the steak with olive oil to prevent it from sticking to the barbecue. This is better than brushing the barbecue, as it prevents the oil from burning. Excess oil can create smoke and cause flare-ups on the barbecue. Step 2: Wait until just before cooking to season your steak, as salt draws out the flavoursome juices from the meat, making it tough. Season one side with salt and pepper, then cook the steak, seasoned-side down first, to seal in the flavour. Season the other side just before turning over. Step 3: Cook the steak on the barbecue, using longhandled tongs to turn the steak, until cooked to your liking. Cooking times vary depending on the thickness. Turn steak once only during cooking - any more and the juices escape, which can make the meat tough. Step 4: After cooking, transfer the steak to a plate and cover with foil. Set aside for 5 minutes to rest. Heat pushes the juices to the centre of the steak. Resting it after cooking allows the meat to relax, and the juices then distribute evenly throughout the steak, making it succulent and tender. How to know when your steak is done: The time needed to cook a steak varies depending on its thickness, and how you like it. Don’t be tempted to cut into a steak to see if it’s done. This allows the precious juices to escape, making the meat tough. Instead, press the centre of the steak with the back of your tongs - if it’s medium the meat will spring back. Use this guide for cooking times and to tell when it’s ready. For steak 1.5cm-thick: Rare - 1-1 1/2 minutes each side; Medium - 2-3 minutes each side; Well done - 3-4 minutes each side. For steak 2-3cm-thick: Rare - 2-3 minutes each side; Medium - 4-5 minutes each side; Well done - 5-6 minutes each side. Tongs test: Rare - soft; Medium - slightly firmer and springy; Well done - very firm with no spring.

These recipes will marinate four beef steaks. To make them, combine the ingredients in a glass or ceramic bowl, add the steaks and turn to coat, then cover and place in the fridge to marinate before barbecuing. Steamed buns a hit!

THE recent addition of steamed buns served as a sandwich with various fillings have proved so popular that Dhom and Spencer have added them to the menu as permanent items (two buns for $10.00). The fillings of five-spice pork belly with pickled daikon and grilled chicken with satay sauce are now permanent fixtures on their lunch menu. In addition they have several other bun fillings which they rotate as specials each week. These include: organic roast duck with cucumber and hoisin sauce; poached Bendele chicken with avocado, wasabi mayo and iceberg lettuce; and grilled miso tofu with daikon pickle. Dhom and Spencer have also added their popular Massaman Beef curry to their lunch and dinner menus, available for dine-in and take-away. It is a lovingly made dish comprising over 30 ingredients including more than 15 herbs and spices. It is available on the lunch menu with their house made roti bread instead of rice. On their dinner menu they have added two new entrees, ‘neua dadd’ and ‘muu grob’. ‘Neua dadd’ is semi-dried marinated beef that is fried and served with a Sriracha Chilli Sauce. The beef is marinated in a paste of coriander root, garlic, whiskey and soya sauce. ‘Muu Grob’ is crispy pork crackling which is served with a cherry tomato and minced chicken dip (narm prik ong), a traditional Northern Thai dish. Dhoms Kitchen will be closed from 22 to 28 August, reopening on Wednesday 29 August. To stay up to date on what is happening at Dhoms Kitchen you can follow Dhom and Spencer on twitter @dhomskitchen and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dhomskitchen. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. Bookings are recommended. 1a Garnet Street, Cooroy (opposite Cooroy Hotel) Ph. 5447 7710.

MANY students who have watched their favourite athletes compete in the London Olympics were inspired and enthusiastic about participating in the carnival’s events, which included sprints, long jump, shotput and high jump. Every student that participated in an event earned points for their house. The carnival had to be re-scheduled from earlier this term due to poor weather. Students and staff could not have asked for a better day weatherwise with the clear skies and mild temperatures making for a brilliant sports day.

ORGANISERS of a free support and social gardening group for locals touched by cancer will host a special morning tea in Cooroy to raise awareness of the group and encourage others to get involved. The newly formed support and social gardening group is part of Cancer Council Queensland’s c-vivor program, which is facilitated by Juliette volunteers who are cancer survivors. Group leader and bowel cancer survivor, Juliette Horgan said her gardening group aimed to be a vital source of support, physical activity and fun for people affected by cancer. “We can’t wait to get our group up and running but we need a little bit of extra help from the local community,â€? she said. This is why I have decided to host a special morning tea, with the help of the wonderful French cafĂŠ Maison de Provence, who are very supportive of our cause. “I know there are a lot of people in Cooroy and Pomona who are affected by cancer – either having treatment or who have recovered, having had treatment. I’m keen to connect with other locals, ensure they know about the range of services and support available to them, and encourage them to get involved in our gardening program.â€? Mrs Horgan was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011 after a bowel screening kit returned a positive reading. “I went for a colonoscopy following a positive reading on a bowel cancer screening kit and when the cancer was confirmed I went in for surgery almost straight away,â€? she said. “It was all a bit of a shock and it is still hard to

This is quite a common question and the most important fact to recognise is that the context for each individual is vital to understand before we can decide on the importance of a cholesterol reading. Having a high cholesterol reading is not in itself really a disease-there are no symptoms- but with a high cholesterol level deposits of the cholesterol can line the blood vessels and narrow the space through which blood can pass. The less blood that can pass through, the less blood that can reach the vital organs like the brain, heart and kidneys. If the blood vessel clots off completely then this can cause death of the brain tissue: stroke, or heart: heart attack. This is why cholesterol is important. The other major risk factors for stroke and heart attack are age (no known cure yet), smoking, high blood pressure, kidney disease and diabetes. We need to consider all these factors before we can calculate the importance of any single cholesterol reading. The average cholesterol reading for an Australian adult is about 5.6. This consists of ‘good cholesterol’ and ‘bad cholesterol’. One helps prevent blocking of the blood vessel, one contributes to block-

statins. If they lower the cholesterol significantly it can reduce your risk of heart attack by about 30%. Back to the man with a 7% chance of heart attack in the next 5 years. If he took a statin to reduce his cholesterol effectively from say 6.2 down 4 then this would reduce his risk of heart attack from 7% down to about 5%. The second man might take the statin and reduce his cholesterol from 4.2 down to 3.0. His risk of heart attack would fall from 28% to about 19%. The second man with the greatest absolute risk is getting the greatest benefit, even though his cholesterol might be the lowest to start with. That’s the benefits, so what are the risks of statins? The most common one is muscle aches and pains in about 5-10% of users. Very rare side effects are transient memory problems and kidney damage. In general in someone with a high risk of heart attack the benefits will outweigh the cons but in those taking it who have a low risk of heart attack the benefits might not be so clear. Best to discuss it with the doctor if uncertain. Maple Street Surgery, Phone 5447 6644.

ing. When we know all these parameters we can calculate the risk of, say, having a heart attack in the next 5 years. Take two men. One is age 50, a non smoker, with normal blood pressure, no kidney disease and not diabetic. His cholesterol level is 6.2. His risk of a heart attack in the next 5 years would be about 7%. Take a man age 60, smoker, diabetic, high blood pressure, but with a cholesterol of only 4.2. His risk of heart attack in the next 5 years would be about 28%. So although cholesterol is a risk factor for stroke and heart attack we need to know the whole context before deciding on the importance of a single cholesterol reading. The second man probably needs his cholesterol lowered even more than the first man. Can diet and exercise lower your cholesterol? Yes. They can also help with blood pressure and diabetes so they are very important. But how much can significant weight loss reduce your cholesterol. It varies but not much more than 15-20% at best. There is a large genetic component to the cholesterol level and so dramatic changes with diet alone are unlikely. What else is there? The main drugs used are called

Women’s empowerment workshop

EMPOWERMENT is both an attitude and a state of mind however in order to be “in our power” and operate as the “iron fist in the kid glove” we need to reassess and balance a new feminine sense of “worth” and release any

negative emotions that are holding us back. The good news is that through our special Holistequine horses we can empower ourselves with a simple energetic clearing process. This is achieved because our horses, having had all

their own baggage cleared then act as pure mirrors to show us who we really are. Once we claim this inner power we change not only the relationship we have with ourselves but all the relationships around us as well With the arrival of the Aquarian energy we have completed many long cycles of human spiritual development and will feel the influence of this new incoming “2” energy of completion however before we can move forward and create a successful version of “who we want to be” we will need to reassess some old ideas of “who we thought we were”. As women most of us have attempted to measure up to an image of the “perfect woman”, a person that should be eve-

rything to everybody. It is an outdated symbolic figure floating around in every woman’s subconscious mind, a figure that needs to be dusted off and re-evaluated as it is eroding our sense of self worth and undermining us at every level of our being. The new version believes that………… it is what we do with and how we overcome the pitfalls and adversities in life that is the measure of our real intrinsic worth. The Universe’s idea of perfection is judged by our intention; by our willingness to have a strong but loving approach to life. If our intention is pure and we are not afraid to admit to and learn from our mistakes then we are perfect. Our life is about choices, leaving us to

discern and create only positive experiences for our future and ideally not be held back by judgement of our past……in doing this we can then learn to live harmoniously. Connecting with the horses will reset a new level of personal power and give us a 10/10 as the new perfect woman; but still leaving room for growth through humility. We believe that perfection is defined by our intention to be the best we can be Ph. Heal back pain with core muscle exercises STRONG back and abdominal muscles, sometimes referred to as core muscles, can help heal many types of back pain, especially the most common form of back pain caused by soft tissue injury or back muscle strain. The typical person does not do not enough back exercise and abdominal exercise, in everyday activities or even in exercise sessions. That is unfortunate, because back and abdominal muscles tend to weaken with age unless specifically exercised. Consequently, exercises that strengthen these core muscles should be a part of a balanced exercise program. The bones of the spine provide the supporting frame for the back. Connected to this frame is an intricate system of muscles and ligaments that increase the strength and stability of the spine, arms and legs. The abdominal muscles and back muscles are key components of this muscular network, and provide the strength to keep the body upright and for movement. When these core muscles are in poor condition, additional stress is applied to the spine as it supports the body and back injury or back pain is more likely. Different abdominal and back exercises focus on the muscles that support the spine. Some of the body’s core muscles

are exercised in everyday life. For example, the gluteals are used during walking or climbing steps. However, working most of the stomach and back muscles is more difficult and requires a conscious approach to targeting them for stretching and strengthening. Without specific back and abdominal exercises to target these muscles, they will naturally weaken over time, increasing the chance of developing or worsening back pain. Weak and/or overly tight supporting muscles can have painful spasms and suffer injuries themselves, which then prevent them from supporting the spine as needed. Compromised muscles can also lead to problems with bone structure of the spine due to poor posture from the weak muscles, thereby creating an increased risk of back pain or back injury. Consequently, developing combined strength in stomach muscles and back muscles can reduce the likelihood of back pain episodes; reduce the severity of back pain; protect against injury by responding efficiently to stresses; help avoid back surgery in some cases; facilitate healing from a back problem or after spine surgery; and improve posture. If you’ve already got back pain or you think you could do with improving your core mus-

cle exercise regime, Make a Difference Health & Fitness in Cooory can develop a balanced core muscle exercise program for you – give them a call on 5442 6179 or have a look at their website on www.madhf.com.au.

Fundraiser for Archie ON September 1, Minor Elite is planning a 12 hour fundraising event a the AFL grounds in Reserve Street Pomona from 10am to 10pm on Saturday September 1st. The fundraiser is to assist with costs involved in the treatment of Cassidy McGown and Matthew Vanderveen’s three year old son Archie. Archie has tumours in his skull and eye socket that have eroded the bone. He has already endured two operations, mountains of medication that is taken daily and 12 months of chemotherapy has just begun. Archie’s mum and dad are long time locals, and currently live in Cooran. With all the frequent travel to the hospital, time spent away from home, and the emotional stress this situ-

ation has evoked, Matt is unable to keep working. Financially, things will be tough for at least the next 12 months. The fundraiser will be in the form of a family packed day full of fun things to do for the children, and followed by an afternoon/night of live music. There will be raffles and auctions held from locally donated items, face painting, jumping castle, sausage sizzle, great coffee plus more. Any and all financial contributions raised as a result of this event, will be deposited into Minor Elites Bendigo Bank Account in Cooroy. BSB 633000 Acct 143389195, and then distributed by the account administrator direct to Archie’s parents.

pomona Free go-cards for public transport seminar participants

COOROY RAG IN support of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Strategic Transport Strategy, the Pomona and District Community House will conduct two public seminars and give away free cashed up gocards in a bid to boost the use of public transport across the Noosa Hinterland. The seminars, to be held at Pomona and Cooroy, will inform people about how they can maximise the value of their credit sized gocard, which is used to make electronic payments when boarding a bus or train. The go-cards will be included with a special information pack handed out to participants who book to attend. The pack will also contain an instruction manual and timetable information. The operation of Council Cabs – subsidised cab trips for pensioners

from their home to the nearest doctor or local shopping centre – will also be explained. Both seminars are free. The cost is being met with the help of a council grant towards the Get Go-ing Noosa Hinterland initiative supported by Pomona and District Community House. “Recently we surveyed the Hinterland community about what things they liked about their area and what activities they wanted us to arrange. Somewhat surprisingly, among the responses was a clear desire to know more about the operation of public transport locally, so these public meetings are in response to that feedback,” said Heather Manders, the Community House coordinator. “We know our population is ageing quicker at this end of the Sunshine

Coast, but we also have young teens without a driver ’s licence and people who want to walk cycle and take public transport. Hopefully we will see more public transport services to the Hinterland, but we need to show support for what we have already. “Physical and social connectivity are important to the vibrancy of our Hinterland towns, which is why Community House is backing this move.” The Pomona public transport seminar will be held at the Lawson Shed at 10 am on Thursday 30 August, while the Cooroy seminar will take place at the Cooroy Library at 10am on Thursday 6 September. A free morning tea will be provided at each meeting, which will last about an hour. A go-card tag on-off

demonstration will be held afterwards at the local railway station. Heather said the guest speaker at each seminar would be Mr Robert Dow of the public transport advocacy group Rail Back On Track. Bookings are essential for catering purposes, phone 5485 2427. Cooroy and Pomona are served by the No.632 bus running between Cooran and Noosa Heads and the No.631 bus connecting Noosa Heads and Nambour Station via Cooroy. Return Citytrain passenger services operate twice a day between Gympie North and Brisbane. “The 632 service remains a temporary trial and we don’t want to see it go. “As many people as possible should come to the meetings we have arranged to demonstrate support for what serv-

ices we have. Robert Dow is also keen to hear from people about ways we can improve public transport across the Noosa Hinterland,” Heather said. Meanwhile, Heather said she was pleased at reports that Queensland Rail would paint the Cooroy railway station in heritage colours. In addition sealed parking areas had been provided at Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy stations in recent times and a new bus shelter has been installed at Cooroy. “The state government and council have made these investments for the good of the area. The practical demonstration of community support would be to come along to one of the two meetings we have arranged and find out more about how convenient public transport can be.”

FIFTY years ago secondary education came to Imbil, and the State school now known as Mary Valley State College will mark its golden anniversary with celebrations on September 22. Where students once took their lessons from chalkboards and books, information technology has taken over with smartboard computer screens and internet learning an everyday experience. All this will be compared by past and present students at the open day festivities which start with registration at 10am at the school grounds in Edward Street, Imbil. Visitors will then be taken down memory lane with a comprehensive display of the school’s history. Highlights of the day include cake cutting, the burying of a time capsule and a roll call of the original class of 1962, which was headed up by class captain John Kropp, who still lives in Imbil. The anniversary will be capped off with a buffet style reunion dinner on Saturday night from 6pm. Intending guests are asked to book their attendance by contacting the school office on 5488 5333 to assist with catering. Cost is $15 per head and meals will be provided by the school’s enterprising P&C association. Morning tea and lunch will also be available café style during the open day. Organisers have also booked a photographer to capture formal and informal photos of class groups during the celebrations.

IMPACT Boxing Academy has once again brought another exciting night of Boxing back to Cooroy, when the Impact crew hosted their “Young Guns” fight night. The event was held at “The Stadium” at the Noosa District High School & saw around 300 people brave the cold to watch an action packed card featuring 25 bouts. Alec Aird Cardiff was the first combatant up for the Impact crew. Alec’s opponent was Kye McDermont from Gladstone. From the opening bell these to little soldiers went to war. Both boys moved & boxed well beyond their years as the crowd was on their feet cheering them home. After a lengthy wait the judges awarded the bout to Alec by one point. Alec was also awarded the Pat Reed “Junior Fighter of the night Cup” for his efforts. Next up was Connor Jones for the Impact crew. Connor was stepping up in experience when he took on Jason Travers from NSW.

totally out-boxed his opponent Ali Jerkic in their bout while Jake Henry and Reece ”Lightning” Mercieca had the crowd on their feet as they put on a toe-to-toe performance in their exhibition bout! “I am very proud of our boys. There is always a lot more pressure to perform well in front of your home crowd and these kids have done themselves and everyone around them proud,” said trainer Mark Evans. “We will now be focusing on the National Golden Gloves tournament to be held in Brisbane at the end of August. I would also like to thank the people of Cooroy for continually supporting these kids as they strive to reach their individual goals. Your support means the world to us! Also a big thank you to everyone involved in making this tournament a success, without your help these shows cannot happen and our young boxers would not be able to compete in front of their home crowd.

Junior Demons Hit the Finals on Form NOW we have hit the pointy end of the AFL season. Unfortunately the seniors couldn’t emulate their flag winning exploits of last year and just missed out on a place in the finals in the final game of the year. Time for them to lick their wounds, have a big presentation night and then onward to next year and another flag! But a big congratulations to all those who played this year and a special mention to Blake Magin who both played and coached this year. Was a real mix of age groups this year with a number of under 18’s mixing it up with guys who were old enough (and do) play masters. Had a few father son combinations out there with Andy Hennings

play each week with his son Liam, Bill Magin pulled on the boots to run out with Blake. (unfortunately Lanze was not table to play those games), Wayne Mahony got a chance to play with his 2 sons (Alex and Bill) and Travis Knight got to play with his sons Jordan and Michael. Now that makes for a family team and club! U8’s and U10’s season has been a lot of fun and they are now ending their season with the big carnival down in Nambour. Well done everyone and a big thanks to Sue Hobbs for being team manager and the coaches Paul Trinder and Jason Kelly. All the parents that helped over the season, thank you! The U12s and

U14s have both had an incredibly successful 2012 season. And now the finals kick in. With one round left both teams are clear on top of the ladder and have finals set in their sights. The club will host four semi final games at the Pomona oval on 19th August. A win from both teams will see them straight through to the grand final on 2nd September. Such a successful season can be attributed to healthy numbers in both teams. The players are enjoying it so much that word of mouth has seen new players wanting to sign on up until three weeks ago. So all that can be said is Go Demons and bring home the flags!

Coolum U14 player trying to hold back Pomona Cooroy’s Mitch Henderson.

Cooroy Tennis Club MOTORSPORT enthusiasts who have been following the progress of local driver Michael Wedge will be cheering him on as he steps up the pace after making his debut in the Touring Car Masters Series last weekend. Michael had been clocking up some impressive performances racing in the Queensland V8 Series, and was approached by Jim Morton with an offer to drive his 600hp HQ Monaro in the Touring Car Masters Series. Like any good rev head, Michael immediately retired his Commodore and took up the challenge. After a bit of a rocky start at Qld Raceway last weekend, where he spun out and ended up finishing 11th, Michael now has his sights set on improving on this result when he heads

to Eastern Creek next month. “It’s all a learning curve for me, and I put a lot of pressure on myself, especially now I’m racing someone else’s car,” said Michael. “This car’s got double the horsepower of my Commodore and I’m still getting used to it, but am confident that I’ll go better next time.” Michael will be racing the Monaro all over Australia and will be heading down to Bathurst this year with Alan Gurr who will be driving it in one of the support races. The Monaro has a bit of a history behind it, having been driven by the legendary Jason Richards at Bathurst last year and holds the lap record. Michael is greatful for the huge support he’s had from many Sunshine Coast businesses who have got right behind
