Gear up for 2014 Great Noosa Trail Walk AVID walkers are gearing up for the 2014 Great Noosa Trail Walk being held on 4, 5 and 6 October. When the booking window opened last month, registrations immediately started flowing in. The event is limited to 150 walkers to maintain a friendly, community atmosphere so if you want to be part of one of the Sunshine Coast’s most amazing hiking events, you will need to be quick or you will miss out. “We are really pleased with the initial bookings for the second Great Noosa Trail Walk and are confident that it is going to be a fantastic event again. We’ve made a few changes to the route and activities and it is looking like we will book out and have a full contingent of walkers enjoying the majesty of the Noosa hinterland,” said event organiser, Shaun Walsh. The Great Noosa Trail Walk is a three day journey that will showcase the natural and cultural landscape of the Noosa hinterland. The trail traverses the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona via a series of dedicated walking trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts of the hinterland through to the ocean. Trail guides will be on the route providing assistance and information about the history and scenery. Michelle Pickering, Cath Withyman and Elly Johnson at the Twin Hills Lookout, Noosa Trail

Where to next for the Cooroy Butter Factory? NOOSA Council is calling for people interested in exploring possible future uses for the Cooroy Butter Factory, to attend a public workshop at the Cooroy Library on Wednesday 27th August at 6pm. The Butter Factory is currently being operated by Council as a gallery and workshop space for local and visiting artists with a full exhibition program, associated public programs and workshops, however, as Council’s Director of Community Services Alan (Fox) Rogers explained. “The Cooroy Butter Factory has a long and rich history and Council wants to talk with people about a new and sustainable future for the building. The Butter Factory was purchased by the Noosa Council in the early 1990s and since then it has been a creative hub for many types of community and cultural activities. Unfortunately, the operational model currently in place is simply unsustainable. “We are looking for a community partnership to identify a more costeffective way to use and manage the space. The Butter Factory is a wellloved and great community resource. Over the next few months we want to explore a range of options for the Butter Factory’s future so we can de-

velop a new direction that respects community priorities.” The workshop on 27th August marks the commencement of a three monthlong community engagement process during which Council will be capturing ideas and refining options. Mr Rogers went on to say “We are excited by the possibilities, and at this stage, nothing is off the table. All ideas will be treated as good ideas. By the end of November, we hope to have some really solid options for the Butter Factory’s future to put to a Council meeting. If people are passionate about the future of the Butter Factory but cannot attend the 27th August workshop, Council will also be running an open, online forum where people can contribute their ideas and council can provide feedback to the community as the process evolves. At the end of the community engagement period, the standout options will be presented to council who will then be in a much better position to make a fully- informed decision with the best possible outcome for all stakeholders.” To attend the workshop or register your interest in the consultation email cooroybutterfactory@noosa.qld.gov.au or telephone 5329 6508.

Politics – if you didn’t laugh you’d weep! I thought politics couldn’t get any worse … silly, silly me!! Our legislators at the moment, seem sadly all at sea. The Budget’s nowhere settled yet, still subject to lots of tension, They’d better fix it soon, or put it on the old age pension. Ministers can’t explain what their policies are all about, Even the Prime Minister appears unable to help them out. He begins to struggle to clarify, where the country is going, His speech is awash with confusing political toing-and-froing. The Treasurer insists we’re close to broke, heading for the rocks, Things are tough, he moans, we must pull up our financial socks. Then some professor or economist, says “Wrong” the country’s doing fine, And tells the Government to get more Chinese to come and dig another mine. The Middle East is astir once more, some forecast a century-long war, Surely we won’t go there again, after the wasteful experience before. So be prepared, fellow citizens, for the speeches and arguments in store, One must admire your patience, these politicians are difficult to ignore. Especially now, they’ll be fighting fit, they’ve all just been away, Back in Canberra, after six weeks, of a surely refreshing holiday!! Mr Palmer will be back, probably to continue his mischievous best, Maybe with new ammunition, to stir up some more unrest!!! Australian Native Orchids AUSTRALIAN Native Orchids are plants that are often overlooked in most collections. They are often viewed as the poor relation compared to the overseas orchids. Most of the Australian are yellow or creams just like the wattles. These colours depict the harsh dry environment of Australia. Because they have evolved to handle these conditions they can be grown in our gardens without much attention. I have several varieties growing in the garden and they do not get any supplementary water or fertiliser and they thrive and flower every year. Only draw back is most of the flowers are short lived but they make up for it in volume of flowers. The flower attached to this article is Dendrobium Hilda Poxon, which was recently shown at our Saturday meeting. There is always a show and tell at our meetings. The Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society conducts a spring show and many Australian natives can be viewed there along with 100’s of other exotic orchids. The show is held in the Memorial Hall in Cooroy on the 19th and 20th of September. There will be an abundance of orchids for sale, something for all buyers. To learn more about growing why not visit a club meeting. The club holds its meetings on the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah Hall starting at 1am. All visitors are welcome, we just ask for a $ 2 donation to cover afternoon tea .Good growing, John Green President Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Contact John on 54832764 or visit the club’s website.

The week robots took over Cooroy High Quality Work at very Affordable Prices Janice Allen 244 Duke Road, Doonan

THERE were some high-tech, high-fives at Cooroy State School last week. The students found a great way to thank one of their biggest supporters and promote their highly anticipated Showcase Week at the same time. For the past five years, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has provided thousands of Cooroy State School students the opportunity to develop their technology skills by building their own robot, through the school’s heralded Lego Education Robotics Program. In late July, Cooroy State School’s Curriculum Coordinator, Kathryn Cook was joined by Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards at a school assembly to present the three winners of a school wide poster competition with their prizes. The students had recently decided to design posters for display in the bank as a thank you for the support provided over the years. All those entries remain brightly on display for all to see and enjoy at the Cooroy Community Bank branch on Maple Street. Mrs. Cook said the number of posters on show only strengthens the value the students place on the program provided by the bank. “Our Robotics Program is an ideal way to captivate young minds and stimulate critical thinking. It teaches a wide range of skills such as problem solving, as well as encouraging team work and cooperation,” Mrs. Cook added. “Students learn not only how to use technology, but also how to create it. During Showcase Week the students will get the opportunity to show what they’ve learned and celebrate the program in front of friends, family and the Bendigo Bank representatives who have made this program possible,” she said.

Kathryn Cook and Geoff Edwards pictured with (l-r) Tamzyn Pierce, Ruby Cook, Ollie Dingle and Joshua Christensen from 3N and some of their We-Do The program began in 2009, and sees groups of students working collaboratively on programming basic commands for P-3 (the Bee-Bots and We-Do’s), right through to challenging science or mathsbased problems with open-ended solutions for Year 6 and 7 students. Many of the robots are then able to be programmed to carry out specific commands as were evidenced during the week long activities at Cooroy State School from 11-15 August. As one of the only programs of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy State School knows the school is onto a good thing. “During Showcase Week, it was great to see the students present what they have come to value so greatly. They’re were all so excited and, as a school, we were privileged to be able to deliver the Robotics

Program right here in Cooroy. It’s a great initiative that sets us apart,” Mrs. Cook said. Cooroy Community Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said he loves how far the Robotics Program has come in the past five years. “This is just the sort of project our Cooroy Community Bank loves being involved with. We feel like we’ve grown with it and having the opportunity to be here with the kids and see what this program means to the kids is just terrific. I encourage family and friends of the students (and interested locals), to learn more of what this is all about,” Geoff said. Anyone wanting to know more information about the Robotics Program can do so by calling Cooroy State School on 5472 2100.

New bus stop provides missing link for locals CATCHING public transport is set to become easier for locals with a new bus stop on Cooroy-Noosa Road providing customers with better access to westbound buses. Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the State Government had listened to the community’s concerns about public transport in the area and had delivered a solution that met passenger needs. “Since the removal of a bus stop on Cooroy-Noosa Road in 2010, local residents in the area have expressed a need for better access to public transport,” Mr Elmes said. “At the election, we promised to provide better infrastructure for all Queenslanders and this is a great example of how we are delivering on this promise as part of our stronger plan for a brighter future.

“Noosa residents will now have better access to local buses with the new bus stop on Cooroy-Noosa Road in Tinbeerwah bridging the 10-kilometre gap between the existing stops on either side and providing a better service for the community. “This new bus stop now provides better access to customers travelling on Route 631 and 632 buses from Noosa Junction and Nambour meaning less walking or driving from home to the bus stop and better access to community services and facilities. “Buses using the new westbound stop will safely pull off the road into the indented bus stop to pick up and drop off customers. “As part of the project, the existing east-

bound bus stop on Cooroy-Noosa Road has also been upgraded to make it Disability Discrimination Act-compliant and is now paired with the new westbound stop meaning customers can access the network in both directions of travel. “Route 631 and 632 buses will start servicing the new bus stop from Monday, 4 August 2014. “We hope this investment in local public transport infrastructure will encourage uptake of public transport on the Sunshine Coast.” The State Government has worked with the local bus operator Sunbus throughout the design and construction of the new bus stop on Cooroy-Noosa Road. news Tinkering with the Age Pension

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

AS we prepare to celebrate seniors and seniors’ week, here are a few thoughts to consider. The Federal Government recently passed into law various changes to a range of income support payments including the age pension. These changes were flagged during the 2013 election and debated over the past 6 months. The change to the age pension relates to the treatment of some annuities (also called income streams) in the income test. The changes extend the normal deeming rules to account based income streams. This may be a little obscure for people unfamiliar with this area. A brief recap may be helpful. The amount of age pension you may be entitled to receive depends on a number of factors including your relationship status, home ownership and your assets and income above a threshold. For many people of pension age, their assets include their home (which is usually excluded from both the asset and income tests), financial investments such as a term deposit and possibly an investment property or holiday home. Most assets generate income; rent earned on an investment property or interest on a term deposit for example. Thus most assets affect both the asset and the income tests. The actual income earned on some assets (for example, rent on an investment property) is included in the income test. In contrast, financial assets are “deemed” to earn a set income irrespective of the actual income earned. Thus a term deposit may earn 4.50%p.a., but for the age pension income test it is deemed to earn a set 3.50%p.a. For example, from 14 November 2014, for a single person the deeming rates are 2%p.a. for the first $46,600 of financial assets and 3.50%p.a. thereafter. Under the existing rules, a regular payment

from an annuity is included in the age pension income test. However, the payments are discounted to reflect a return of capital component. Under the new rules, account based income streams will be subject to the deeming rules. For example, you set up a super pension with a balance of $250,000 and receive 5% of the balance over the year as regular monthly payments. At the end of the year there is $240,000 capital left in the super pension account. You have $50,000 in a term deposit outside super. In this case, the capital in the super pension account will be deemed to earn 3.50%p.a. This deemed income will be included in the age pension income test irrespective of the actual monthly payment you receive from the super fund. The changes start from 1 January 2015. If you are receiving the age pension before this date and have an account based annuity before this date, then the existing “discount” rules will continue to apply. However, if you change annuities, buy a new annuity or only start receiving the age pension after 1 January 2015, then the new deeming rules will apply to your account based annuity. The government believes the changes level the playing field for similar financial investments. Thus you can choose an investment based on merit rather than just its effect on pension entitlements. But arranging your assets to maximise your entitlements remains important. If you reach the pension age this year, or you have a super pension but were thinking about making changes, then it may be worthwhile seeking professional financial advice before 1 January 2015. To arrange an appointment with one of our financial planners any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You don’t have to live in the Mary Valley to join scarecrow fun IF you love the idea of stuffing old clothes with straw or “up cycling” old bits and pieces to make a scarecrow, the 2014 Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival is right up your alley. This year residents who live near the Mary Valley can put their scarecrows up for adoption by valley businesses who will care for them like they were their own homegrown ‘crows. Cooroy residents have already indicated their interest in sending some ‘crows over to Kenilworth, so arty folks in Gympie or

down at the Sunshine Coast can do the same, and send them to any of the valley towns from Lagoon Pocket through to Conondale, festival spokesman Nicky Watson said. And you could win money while you are at it. Scarecrows judged as Mary Valley champions can win $100 in the traditional and open categories, and $50 in the children’s categories - for kids aged five to 15 years. Registrations for the scarecrow festival opened this week and the organising committee is hoping to see a

lot of “up cycling” or re-purposing of old items in this year’s crop of ‘crows. Wouldn’t it be great to see a new version of the tin man from the memorable Wizard of Oz movie? “Don’t be afraid to let your imagination fly,” Mrs Watson said. “We don’t have any idea what people can come up with, and that’s the fun of this festival.” Originally built to ward off birds from the farm crops, scarecrows today are usually relegated to the domestic vegetable patch. The Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival is auspiced by the Mary Valley Artslink organisation, which aims to promote the growth of the arts as a viable industry within the Mary Valley by providing a framework for artists to build projects. It is affiliated with Artslink Queensland. Inquiries to Mrs Watson on 5484 3010, email info@scarecrows.org.au or visit www.scarecrows.org.au

Honouring those that ‘make it, bake it, sew it, grow it’ THE Original Eumundi Markets has embarked on an exciting photographic project with renowned local photographer Alain Bouvier that will see the development of a collection of portraits of artists and designers from within the market community. Titled ‘Market Characters - Make it, Bake it, Sew it, Grow it’, the photography project is being supported through a Regional Arts Development Fund grant through the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Alain says the images will be captured on site at the markets over the months ahead, and the stallholders he features will include a cross-section of talent compris-

ing painters, sculptors, fashion designers, cobblers, jewellers, woodworkers, chefs, masseuses, photographers, musicians, and street performers. “We want to celebrate the makers and creators – the artists, designers and foodies - the personalities who make the products at Eumundi Markets that make it the iconic market that it is,” he says. Market Manager Daniel West echoes Alain’s sentiments, noting the importance of honoring the stallholders in the Eumundi Markets’ 35th anniversary year. “It is important to celebrate our stallholders in this milestone year, and simi-

larly important too to help a record of the artists from a cultural heritage perspective,” Daniel says. “Once complete, the images will be displayed in an exhibition at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre and also via our website.” “In the longer-term, the photographic collection will ensure the Eumundi community retains a professional record of local market talent and local artisans and entrepreneurs – the people that make up what is unquestionably one of the greatest tourist attractions on the Sunshine Coast,” Daniel says.

Peter Wellington IT was back to Parliament for the first sitting since the budget was delivered and since the Stafford by-election which the Labor Party won with a 19.1 percent swing. It was also the first sitting since the Premier’s promise following the historic defeat of his Party to take on board the concerns of Queenslanders and to listen more. In my first speech I attacked the Government for handing out $3million of taxpayer’s funds to political parties with absolutely no accountability. Under these newly introduced arrangements, political parties get to share$3million each year and don’t have to account for a single cent. They can put the money in the bank or spend it as they like. During the Estimates Hearing I had I strongly objected claims by the Attorney General that the community had been consulted on this. This is not true and the first I heard that this amount of money was to be gifted to the political parties was in the media. I have filed a motion of disallowance in the futile hope that the Government may realise how disgraceful this is and overturn their decision. As I say, a futile hope for what is simply a sham. In my speech to the Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2014, which was made up of amendments to twelve Acts, I supported some of the Acts but was concerned about others. It has become common practise by this government to introduce amendments to numerous acts under one the Bill which don’t allow sufficient time for consideration of each individual impact. It makes the job of fully scrutinising each section of the Bill almost impossible before it is debated and rammed through Parliament by the Government. I supported the Bill which included two amendments, one that was originally touted by Member for Yeerongpilly Carl Judge and another that revisited a Double Jeopardy proposal that I had introduced in 2007. Prospect of ambulance for peak periods in Kenilworth: There was good news for Kenilworth with the prospect of an ambulance service to operate during peak holiday periods. For years I have been lobbying past and present governments for this service for the upper Mary Valley and was pleased at the news. Minister Springborg told me he was looking at providing a service similar to one provided to Rainbow Beach which operated during peak holiday periods. But he said he didn’t believe there was a need for a permanent ambulance station at Kenilworth at present. For emergency call outs, the Mary Valley relies on the magnificent efforts of the Kenilworth First Responders, a group of volunteers. But during long weekends and holidays when thousands of people descend on the Mary Valley they are run off their feet. Hopefully this new service becomes a reality before the start of the Christmas holidays and takes the pressure off our volunteers. It is badly needed. The First Responders will meet with senior members of the Ambulance Service next week to assess the type of services needed More SCAMS: Since my last column, I’ve had many calls about a variety of scams that are doing the rounds. These include calls allegedly from the Australian Taxation Office, from banks offering refunds on fees and from people offering solar rebates. Please contact my office if you need help with scams. A Council that mostly says ‘yes’ HERE’S a statistic that some Noosa residents might be a little surprised to hear. Ninety seven percent; that’s how many development applications Noosa Council said ‘YES’ to in its first six months. Just 10 of the 372 applications made to the Council were refused; 2.6% of the total. Noosa Council Planning Committee Chairman, Councillor Frank Wilkie says most people are aware that the Council is a staunch defender of Noosa’s environment and lifestyle, but he says “this doesn’t mean we say no to all development”. Councillor Wilkie said “the vast majority of applications we say ‘yes’ to tend to fly under the radar because they fit comfortably within the Noosa Plan, and within what the community supports as being acceptable.” Even in the more complex area of applications for a Material Change of Use, 59 of the 63 applications were approved. Those refused included the Coles application at Noosa Junction, Noosa on Weyba, Viridian Resort and Attunga Heights. Cr Wilkie said each of these was “clearly and substantially in conflict with the Noosa Plan”. “These knock-backs” he said “tend to grab the headlines for obvious reasons. And sometimes the Council is forced to defend the Noosa Plan in the courts. But beneath the headlines, the vast majority of people who come to council with reasonable applications find it a relatively straightforward process.” Cr Wilkie said “come to us with an application that isn’t an attack on the Noosa Plan that binds our community, and you will probably wind up in the 97.4% that makes up our ‘yes’ basket”.

Noosa Council: some facts on transfer costs NOOSA Council has detailed some facts on the progress of the transfer from the former Regional Council into the two separate Councils of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. The State Government established a process last year to determine how the joint assets and liabilities of the former Regional Council were to be split. Assets included funds contributed jointly by the people of the Sunshine Coast, including the Noosa community. The Transfer Committee, consisting of the CEO’s of both Noosa and Sunshine Coast councils, had agreed on most issues by the time the committee was wound up on June 30th this year. Eight issues were not agreed. Of these, three were referred to the Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli earlier this year and decided some time ago. Five technical accounting issues remain to be decided by the Minister, who is the umpire in this matter. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford says “No doubt the Minister will take appropriate advice, and we will abide by what is properly decided under this agreed process.” Mr Playford said “Noosa Council will continue to act in good faith; not by putting pressure on State Government MP’s, not by pre-empting the process, not through the media, and not by spreading misinformation.”

NOOSA Council is opening a new round of Community Project and RADF grants. Applications are invited to 30 September, for projects happening between 1 January and 31 December next year. The Noosa Council Community Project Grants are intended to help local not-for-profit incorporated organisations that need a contribution towards the funding of projects, building works and events that provide benefits to our community. The Regional Arts Development Fund, supported by Arts Queensland, is de-

signed to help cultural organisations and artists, in need of financial assistance, to continue their vital role in reflecting our past, present and future. Council is looking for projects that contribute to the community’s quality of life while improving our economy’s diversity; protecting our biodiversity; increasing the understanding of our heritage; or increasing participation in local cultural, sports and recreational pursuits. The Noosa Chorale was one of the 72 successful Noosa Council Community Project Grant recipients from the

first round held earlier this year. The funding will help them present their 20th birthday concerts. Noosa Chorale President John Davies is looking forward to the concerts on 18 and 19 October at The J, “which will now be better than ever thanks to the much needed financial help.” “We’re working with an orchestra of some 60 musicians and four soloists, including Opera Queensland and former Ten Tenors’ Andrew Pryor. When combined with 70 choir members and the music master, there will be 135 performers, which must be

some sort of record for the J,” he said. This anniversary concert will present a smorgasbord of excerpts from the choir ’s Gala Concerts over the years, including the popular 4th movement of Beethoven’s Choral Symphony and the Chorus of the Slaves from Verdi’s Nabucco and a medley of LennonMcCartney songs. Tickets for the Noosa Chorale anniversary concert go on sale late in August from The J. Phone 5329 6560. Noosa Council is holding three public workshops about the Community Project and

RADF grants, first one is at 10am, 18th August at Noosa Council, the second at 5.30pm, 19th August at the Noosaville Library and the third workshop will be at 5.30pm on the 20th August at the Cooroy Butter Factory. SELLING shares when prices have tumbled or buying a house at the height of a property boom only to dispose of it when the market falls are among the financial set-backs that can happen to anyone on the road to retirement. Everyone makes mistakes during their investment lifetime; the trick is to avoid them when you can and learn from the ones you can’t. Have a plan Failing to plan for retirement and build up savings is one of the most common mistakes. Having adequate retirement funds can be undermined by unrealistic expectations about future lifestyle and the savings needed to fund it. Many retirees are unable to access the age pension because they are asset rich despite being income poor. Putting well thought out investment plans in place to boost your retirement income well before you reach retirement age is the best strategy to overcome such a problem. It’s probably no surprise you are more likely to achieve your financial goals if you have a plan. In the construction of a financial plan you should take account of your risk tolerance, your financial commitments and financial and lifestyle goals. This will give you the confidence to know you can get to your desired destination. A comprehensive plan should also take account of tax, cash flow, superannuation, insurance needs and

estate planning issues. Stay calm Impulsive decisionmaking at the first sign of trouble can undermine your investment goals. If a quality share investment or rental property suddenly falls in price due to a market correction, it is often not the best time to offload. As one wit put it, “Don’t just do something, sit there”. Staying the course and letting time work its magic will often leave you in a stronger position. Equally, investment inertia can be problematic. Strong or poor performance can lead to your investment portfolio moving outside your required risk tolerance over time. Regular reviews to rebalance investments back to your target asset allocation will more likely bear fruit in the long term. Spend less than you earn Drawing up a budget is vital if you want to discipline yourself to spend less than you earn. Failing to budget makes it difficult to keep track of spending and set aside regular savings to fund a comfortable retirement. Bank transaction accounts are ideal for daily spending money but not investment money. In order to beat inflation and produce the returns you need to fund your financial goals over time, you need to build a diversified investment portfolio to match your capital requirements. Spreading money across the major asset classes of cash, fixed interest, shares and property helps minimise risk. It also helps produce consist-

ent returns from a combination of income and capital growth over the long run. The precise combination of assets is dependent on your risk profile. Your adviser should undertake comprehensive research and implement proven portfolio construction principles. It’s never too late It’s never too late to start planning for retirement. Paying off the mortgage is often considered the first step to wealth creation so increase repayments where possible to speed up the process. Once you have built up equity in your home other investment options can be investigated concurrently. If your employed topping up your super through salary sacrifice is one such option, provided you stay within your annual contribution limits. Your employer pays a proportion of your pretax salary into your super fund, reducing tax and boosting your savings at the same time. Review regularly Financial planning is a dynamic process. Regularly reviewing your investments, refraining from kneejerk reactions, understanding market volatility and staying the course can lay the foundations for a prosperous retirement. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706 Phone (07) 5447 7740 www.provisionwealth.com.au

IN yet another example of how local Cooroy Police and the community are working together to keep our town safe by reducing crime and apprehending offenders, I’d like to convey the following story. Before I go into the story I’d like to again state that whilst Cooroy is a great town and a very safe place to live the community as a whole must always be vigilant against outsiders coming into the town and seeking to take advantage of what some may say is a laid back and easy life style often associated with living in a smaller hinterland community up against the faster paced tourism hot spots associated with the coastal strip. On a quiet week day morning whilst I was attending to the ever increasing pile of paperwork on my desk information was received by a member of the public at the front counter who had been enjoying the mid-morning sunshine in Apex Park at the bottom end of Maple Street. The gentleman stated that his suspicions had been aroused when he observed several youths walking up to an elderly man seated in the park near the skate bowl and kids’ play area. Whilst watching the interactions he noted small packages being passed between the man and the youths which caused him great concern and rightly so. Instead of ignoring this behaviour and going back to his morning paper the gentleman took the time to drive to the police station and report what he had seen to the police. Police were able to attend the scene within minutes locating the suspect person as described. A search of this person located cannabis packaged in such a manner to suggest he was indeed at the park for the purpose of dealing drugs to underage persons. The offence

of supplying a schedule 2 drug to a minor is a serious crime and punishable by imprisonment for 25 years. The male was subsequently interviewed and served with court documents for drug related offences and is awaiting a court appearance in the Noosa Heads Magistrates Court. My sincere thanks to the gentleman who reported his suspicions to us and once again the eyes and ears of the Cooroy Community continues to help police fight crime and keep our young people safe. Police take unlawful drug enforcement very seriously as it’s a fact that serious crime and property offences is linked to drug use. On the 24th of July Cooroy Police with the assistance of the Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad launched a series of drug raids in and around Cooroy which lead to significant amounts of Cannabis and Amphetamines being located and seized. Glassware associated with the production of Amphetamines and firearms were also seized from several rural properties. Ten offenders, charged with 22 drug related offences were dealt with as a result of these raids and ordered to appear in court to answer various charges. Remember that police rely on initial public information to commence an investigation and where sufficient grounds exist a search warrant can be taken out. Information is always treated on a strictly confidential basis and can be given via the phone to your local station on 54425030 or by contacting CrimeStoppers on 1800333000. I suppose people reading this could choose to turn a blind eye to unlawful activity that they are aware of or, like the gentleman I’ve mentioned above, choose to make a

difference to our community and report your suspicions to police. Police will not act on rumour or unverified information however the information supplied can be developed and worked on by our QPS Intelligence units which in many cases already have associated intelligence holdings linked to the further information. Our Blue Light Disco numbers continue to dwindle making the payment of bills associated with the running of the disco difficult to pay. Recently, the Cooroy Hotel made a sizeable donation to our disco which was very generous in nature and will go a long way to keeping a smile on the faces of our kids. A huge thank you to Nikki and the wonderful staff at the Cooroy Hotel. In an effort to freshen things up and keep the kids of Cooroy entertained, the Cooroy Blue Light Disco will be running a movie night on Saturday 6th of September at 6.30pm at the Cooroy Primary School Hall in Elm Street. (Instead of the monthly disco) The movie will be a latest release movie and we will have a meal deal going so keep that date free so the kids can come along and support this event I have witnessed several near misses recently with traffic failing to give way at the Myall and Elm Street intersection. Admittedly the intersection is unusual but if you follow basic give way rules associated with giving way at a Give Way Sign and giving way to oncoming traffic when turning right then you can’t go wrong. This intersection will be monitored closely in the near future to ensure compliance with the road rules so be warned.

Get your pool ready for spring SPRING is around the corner, meaning it’s time for pool owners to jump back into their backyard swimming pool. Before you dive here are a few maintenance tips to ensure your pool is at its healthiest and sparkling best. Safety is paramount in the pool area and implementing a few basic steps can help reduce accidents in the pool. Make sure your fence is safe and compliant with council requirements and that the gate is self-closing with a child-safe latch. Keep climbable objects away from the fence area that could be used by a child to gain access when you are not around and most importantly at all times closely supervise children while in the pool area. Have a current CPR chart on display in a clear, central location and familiarise yourself with the CPR process. Spring check all the equipment to ensure that timers are adjusted for an increased number of people in the water and clean the pool and baskets of leaves and debris from

the cooler months. Depending on your filter type perform a backwash or clean your filter cartridges to remove blockages and make sure your cleaner is working well. To make life a little easier and save on energy costs, check out the new robotic cleaners. These cleaners can map out your pool to ensure that the whole surface area is reached and use very little power in doing so, reducing the load on the filter, backwash frequency and cost of your pool. It is vitally important to test the pool water to ensure it is at a safe chemical balance. If you think there may be a problem with the water quality, you can take a sample into your local PoolWerx and have your water tested in 60 seconds. PoolWerx can offer advice on the best way to get your water back to the correct levels, which will make all the difference in reducing the amount of nasties in an unbalanced pool that can cause sore ears and red eyes. Drop into 1/6 Emerald St, Cooroy.

real estate Cooroy real estate market bouncing back FIGURES for the 2013-14 financial year show confidence is bouncing back in the Cooroy real estate market, with strong land sales in local estates leading the way. Project Manager of the Erindale Park development Alex McWilliam said during the global financial crisis vacant land sales fell across the board. “This was a difficult time, as developers stopped building new lots in Cooroy, and struggled to get their investment back for the stock on hand,” Mr McWilliam said. “The available land for sale dropped substantially and there were only four recorded vacant land sales in Cooroy in 2012-13.” Fortunately Mr McWilliam said there had been a strong recovery in Cooroy during the 2013 -14 financial year with 15 recorded land sales. “This is a big jump and exciting news for the community more broadly,” he said. “Since the start of the Erindale Park development sales results have been firming with six out of seven available lots already sold. All three lots in Release 2 were pre-sold before works were completed for $220,000. “The developer of the Brialka Estate, Steve Darke, has recently sold two lots for $215,000 including one lot to a couple retiring from Canberra. Steve said this is the second Canberra couple that have purchased a lot to build for their retirement in Brialka estate.” Mr McWilliam said buyers from the wider region were starting the see the great potential of Cooroy and that new residential estates like Erindale Park offered great value for money

on the Sunshine Coast. “We have two new land releases coming onto the market at Erindale Park. Pre-sales are now offered in the marketplace at prices ranging from $225,000,” he said. “These lots will be constructed as flat building sites with retaining walls built on the boundary to enable the entire site to be enjoyed for play and recreational purposes.” New Homes Consultant with Ausmar Homes Marc Wood agreed that confidence was on the rise. “We have never been busier,” Mr Wood said. “Following some very quiet years since 2008, things are really picking up. We have houses under construction all over the Sunshine Coast including three currently under way in Cooroy with a further three soon to start.” Selling Agent Sam Hargrave of Wythes Real Estate said many buyers were attracted to the Cooroy community. “It caters for all age groups, has excellent amenities, and a strong sense of community,” Mrs Hargrave said. “These attributes are a rare combination, especially in a place where housing is still affordable. This is a big part of why so many people are choosing to make Cooroy their home.” For more information about Erindale Park and Cooroy visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au and sign up for regular updates via our E-newsletter or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

A LITTLE slice of France came to Cooroy and Eumundi on Tuesday 29th July with the arrival of Pauline Tiberghien, a Rotary International Youth Exchange Student. Pauline, who comes from the village of Erquinghem le Sec near the town of Lille and two hours north of Paris, will be jointly hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Eumundi for the next 12 months. “I am so excited to be here in Australia” Pauline said. “The opportunity to go abroad, thanks to Rotary, will be a huge advantage for me in my life. To have knowledge of another culture, new lifestyle, another language, a new openness, meet new people from the four corners of the world, to participate in classes in a foreign high school is all very exciting.” Pauline’s Counsellor, Rotarian and Immediate Past President Lyn Hodges from the Rotary Club of Cooroy has welcomed Pauline into the family of Rotary. “Although she has only been here a short while, Pauline has shown herself to be a beautiful and caring young woman who I know will fit in well” Lyn said. “She will be staying with four host families during her time with us, two from the Cooroy Rotary Club and two from the Eumundi Rotary Club, and they are in for a treat. She has already cooked sausages at the Cooroy Rotary’s monthly sausage sizzle outside Cooroy IGA!” President Chris Durie from Cooroy Rotary and President Les Godwin from Eumundi Rotary echoed Lyn’s sentiments. “It will be wonderful to have Pauline with us”, Chris said. “The opportunity that Rotary provides for young people like Pauline to travel to, and live in, another country under the caring umbrella of Rotary is one of the great programs of Rotary:” “As a very new Club, Eumundi Rotary is delighted to be involved in the Exchange” President Les said. “There was no hesitation

Rotary Exchange Student Pauline Tiberghien and Rotarian Lyn Hodges preparing for Pauline’s first day at school at St Teresa’s Catholic College. from our new members when asked if they would like to be involved. I know Pauline will be made very welcome in Eumundi.” Pauline is now attending St Teresa’s Catholic College in Noosaville. “The school has bent over backwards to make Pauline welcome” Counsellor Lyn said. “I cannot thank Brother Paul and his staff enough. I just know that Pauline is in for the year of her life and that lifelong friendships will be made during the next twelve months.” “Pauline will join eight other students from around the world in our Rotary District 9600 for the next 12 months” Lyn said. Past Rotary International President CarlWilhelm Stenhammar said if every young person in the world had the opportunity to undertake a Rotary Youth Exchange, there would be no more war. “Pauline arrived in Australia a young woman”, Lyn said. She will return a citizen of the world”.

dining & entertainment Huge acclaim for Calamity Jane

THE Noosa District State High School musical production of Calamity Jane received great acclaim from the primary school students, parents and members of the public who came to watch the show. The musical’s “driving force” was Performing Arts Acting Head of Department Louize Lyle,

with the support of dance teacher Sharon Harris. Both teachers spent many hours after school and over weekends with the student performers in coaching, directing and “trouble-shooting” scenes. The Performing Arts department showcased their staff and students’ dancing, musical and acting abilities, with music teacher Deb Tunbridge designing the musical composition and coordinating a band comprising of students and a community band. NDSHS teachers Alarna Priestly, Nicole Elphinstone, Nicole

Koinuma and Mandy Mcguire took on the sewing and design of costumes and props. Ticket sales were organised by the Business Faculty, whilst Support Services Head of Department Tony-Leigh Sheridan manned the canteen which supplied food for the patrons. The show was also a great success thanks to the efforts and support of the teacher aides, school janitor and cleaners. All staff and students involved in the production of Calamity Jane are to be congratulated for such a magnificent and very professional high school musical.

Protect yourself and your family from colds and flu this season EVERY winter when you get sick, you tell yourself to be more prepared next year. As soon as someone sneezes at work, school, or home, you find yourself with yet another cold or flu. It does not have to be that way this chilly winter season. Arm yourself and your family with the tools to build strong immune defences to reduce your risk of getting sick. If you do get sick, a strong immune system will also reduce the severity of your cold and flu symptoms, and help to speed your recovery. Natural Medicines to Prevent and Treat Symptoms There are many Natural Medicines that are beneficial in preventing, treating and shortening the duration of colds and flus. These agents can boost your immune system as well as provide the necessary tools to help you fight against infection. Look out for these immune boosters: · Zinc: Optimal levels of zinc in the body have been found to inhibit the common cold and influenza viruses. · Vitamin C: Vitamin C supports healthy immune function by enhancing the activity of your immune defence army of white blood cells; also reducing severity and duration of symptoms. · Probiotics: These friendly bacteria live in your digestive system and enhance health, and even immunity. Probiotic strains, Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCFM), Bifidobacterium lactis (HN019) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HN001), have been scientifically proven to enhance immune responses. By providing healthy gut immunity, you are providing the best defence

against inhaled and ingested pathogens. • Andrographis: This powerful herb stimulates the body’s natural immune response, and ignificantly reduces the duration of colds. You or your loved ones can take this herb as a preventative to keep your immunity strong; it can also be used acutely as soon as you get cold symptoms. Lifestyle and Dietary Recommendations Incorporate these handy tips into your life to improve your resistance and support recovery from colds and flus: • Rest! Give your body a chance to gather strength and make sure you get a good night’s sleep. • Eat warm, nourishing foods. Homemade chicken and vegetable soup can help break down mucus that often comes with colds and flus. If you don’t have an appetite, the broth alone will provide minerals and vitamins to give you strength. • Eat foods such as garlic, ginger, onion and chilli to help fight off illness, warm you up and reduce inflammation. • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself well hydrated. Be Prepared Make sure you are prepared this cold and flu season - and remember, prevention is better than sure! Have all the essential immune nutrients on hand this winter. You may want to include zinc, vitamin C, strain specific probiotics and andrographis in your immune first aid kit, to keep you and your family well this winter. Everyone will want to know your secret of how you keep well. For any questions please contact Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526

EXHIBITIONS 21 August – 11 October Judith Laws: Beauty and Tragedy on Fraser Shores – re-imagining the Eliza Fraser saga, including paintings from Fraser Island Official opening & book launch: 6pm, Friday 22 August The magic and intrigue of Fraser Island is shown through the paintings of Judith Laws, using glowing colours of turquoise, emerald green, reds, oranges and golds of the perched lakes; a scribbly-gum forest with the flash of a brilliantly coloured parrot’s wing, and coloured sands and cliffs to the weird rough face of an old man banksia seed. Judith Laws has always been intrigued by the Eliza Fraser story and was compelled to show a female insight into this woman’s tragedy. Her interpretations in paint on canvas and vibrant pallet does not show Mrs Fraser as a romantic figure but rather as a brave, ordinary woman weighed down by circumstances beyond her control. Through these expressive works the viewer can feel the artist’s fascination with Fraser Island that extend to her involvement and empathy with Mrs Fraser entering into the drama of the story themselves.

Lara Eardley

Foot Pain? Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Talk to the Experts

ABC called her “The most passionate and inspiring pelvic floor fitness instructor”. If you ever wanted to learn the importance of properly performing your pelvic floor exercises then this is the class for you. Her name is Lara Eardley and she is extremely dedicated to educating the public about the importance of your pelvic floor muscles and why the taboo and embarrassment that surrounds them is unfounded and damaging to our Health. The pelvic floor muscles are the largest muscle mass in the skeletal system, they support every movement that we make. Tthey bear the weight of the entire torso and prevent our organs from falling down as we age. They are extremely important in child birth, in preventing and curing incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, for prostate health and sexual function, they also have the ability to repair and rejuvenate no matter what your age and even after surgery, sometimes in a matter of weeks. Lara will get you to fall in love with the amazing capabilities of your enchantingly beautiful pelvic floor muscles as she takes you on a light hearted journey to understand how to move the muscles that you cannot see. Lara Has developed over 20 exercises that you can perform in the privacy of your own body with no external movement and she is running two educational sessions this month at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Tuesday August 26th from 6-7pm and on Wednesday August 27th at the J, Noosa Junction, 6-7pm in the hope that her important work will gain the support of the community. Lara invites you to join her and change the way you think about your pelvic floor muscles. These events are primarily for women although not exclusively and there is some adult concepts so parental guidance is recommended. To find out more about Lara and her ground breaking work simply Google her name or phone her during business hours 0435 268 066. Hope to see you there!!

WE all know that regular physical activity is good for your health. But did you know, that you don’t have to exercise at a vigorous level to achieve health benefits? The Heart Foundation has developed a low-to-moderate intensity exercise program called Heartmoves which is specifically designed for people who are living with health conditions. The most exciting news for us here in Cooroy is that we have the only Heartmoves program in Noosa right here! By the comments received, it seems Cooroy participants are loving it. “A great workout and a fun time with great people,” says Gwen. “Heartmoves has worked out my upper body really well, I’m now working on my legs,” said Peter. Murial says, “My balance has really improved and it’s a great workout in general”. Raynette says it is lots of fun and Delia said, “Lee is a wonderful caring instructor who keeps us going to achieve our goals”. Heartmoves is a gentle physical activity program suitable for anyone who hasn’t done any exercise in a while. The program is open to everyone and is designed to be safe

for people with stable long term health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or obesity.( You exercise at your own pace in a friendly atmosphere and the program is run by an accredited exercise professional, Lee Smith who has been specifically trained in managing safe, low to moderate intensity physical activity programs. Classes are limited in size to ensure maximum safety for the participants. Taking part in regular Heartmoves sessions can help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol control, manage weight, improve well being and quality of life, manage diabetes, improve balance and flexibility, improve sleep, improve bone mineral density with arthritis management and prevent falls and injuries from falls. Cooroy Heartmoves is every Wednesday from 1.30pm at the CWA Hall in Maple Street and it only costs $13 per session. If you’d like to attend give Lee Smith from Make A Difference Health & Fitness a call on 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 or visit www.madhf.com.au to find out more.

health Dental Health Week 2014

COOROY RAG

THIS year, Dental Health Week is focusing on babies and toddlers’ oral health, with particular focus on how the ‘Sugar Bandit’ hides in Australian households. Who is the sugar bandit in your family? It’s common for parents and extended family to offer children a ‘treat’ as a reward for good behaviour or simply giving in to the ‘pester power’ of children. Using food to reward, bribe or to comfort children sends an inappropriate message about food from an early age and undermines other efforts to build healthy eating habits. Children who consume high sugary foods and drinks on a regular basis are at greater risk of dental decay as well as obesity and diabetes. Parents need to be aware of the risks of treats and put some boundaries around access to them. Parents & family members should consider other options and do not have to take the fun out of rewarding their kids altogether. There are plenty of other ways that don’t include food. Sometimes the Sugar Bandit may not know they are harming your kid’s teeth. In fact the scariest part is that many snacks that are

marketed as ‘healthy’ are actually high in sugar and get stuck in kids’ teeth, increasing acid attacks which cause decay. Because parents think these snacks are healthy, they often allow their children to graze on them all day which makes things worse. Some of the major ‘healthy’ snack culprits are: dried fruit, biscuits (sweet and savoury), fruit juice, muesli bars, children’s cereals, flavoured milk, sweetened yoghurt, fruit bars, fruit slice, flavoured popcorn, canned fruit, baked goods and banana bread. Children do not have to be deprived of these foods but they should be consumed in moderation. When choosing snacks, be aware of how much sugar is in them, but more importantly, reduce the number of times they eat these foods. Also make sure they are eaten in one go and preferably as part of a meal and try to avoid grazing. Wattle Street Dental is offering a free dental health session to Kindergarten’s and Day Care Centre’s in and around Cooroy throughout August to help promote awareness of the effects sugar has on teeth . Volunteers required for the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice THE Sunshine Coast Community Hospice (also known as Katie Rose Hospice) is located at Doonan and provides professional nursing care for the terminally ill in a warm, friendly and peaceful setting – it is truly a beautiful place. Our Charity has always enjoyed strong community support . Without this support your community Hospice could not continue to provide services to the residents of the Sunshine Coast. We currently seek more Personal Care Volunteers and General Care Volunteers to help out on our team. A brief description of both roles is provided and there is a more detailed description in the Volunteer Information Packs. Personal Care Volunteers This role is very ‘hands-on’ in respect to patient care. As a consequence a Certificate 3 in Aged Care, or similar, is required. We ask that team members are available weekly for 4

hour shifts or alternatively, ‘as required’ (on call). This role also may be called upon to fulfil the General Care roles as well. General Care Volunteers This role works to keep the Hospice going and does a bit of everything in relation to housekeeping. There are no personal care requirements in this role. Volunteers in this area may cook, clean, do laundry, make tea or coffee of simply sit with our guests and their families, if need be. As with Personal Care roles, we ask team members are available weekly for 4 hour shifts or alternatively, ‘as required’ (on call), during times of need. Volunteering at the Hospice can be a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. If you would like to know more, please visit our website and download a Volunteer Information Pack. Alternatively, contact the Hospice on 5471 1793 and we will mail a ‘Pack’ to you.

Kabara volunteer drive KABARA is a ‘Not-for Profit’ Aged Care facility located in beautiful Cooroy. Currently, we are in need of volunteers to assist with our Diversional Therapy program which is designed to provide our residents with active, person-centred and purposeful lifestyles. Activities range from bus outings,

sport, games, arts and crafts, mentally stimulating pursuits, music, entertainment, gardening and one on one visits. Please contact Pam on 54546604 if you would like to discuss volunteering with our dedicated and experienced volunteer team, assisting with this very rewarding and worthwhile work.

pomona Speed and gravity no problem for Physics student!

COOROY RAG

PHYSICS student, Ben Duffus, clearly knows all about speed and motion as he makes it two wins out of two starts to claim 2014 King of the Mountain crown. Over 10,000 people flocked to Pomona on Sunday 27 July for the annual Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, a project of the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club. Visitors jostled for places to watch the start and finish of the main event of the day, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge which has competitors climb an almost vertical route and fly fearlessly back down the mountain side. Ben Duffus, 2013 winner, raced over the line an impressive 2 minutes and 29 seconds, ahead of New Zealander, Lance Downie (26:16). Ben’s time of 23:47, though still short of the record of 22:43, was a 35 second improvement on his 2013 run. In accepting first place trophy, Ben, a 22 year old student from Indooroopilly who competes overseas as well as in Australia, said that Pomona’s King of the Mountain is his favourite race, “It’s tough, but it’s just the best fun and I love being here.” Later this month Ben will represent Australia in a 21km race in the US & a 12km run in Italy. Aaron Knight, third overall and first Veteran in a time of 26:26 also had words of praise for race organisers, the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club. “It’s the best run, best organised race I know, with an amazing atmosphere. Every entrant from first to last is cheered across the line. That doesn’t happen anywhere else!” Making it her fourth win, veteran runner Kim Beckinsale, PE teacher from Noosa, was first woman to finish in a time of 31:11. Kim, a late entrant, wasn’t even sure she was going to make it to the race on Sunday morning. Race coordinator, Barry Stewart, said of Kim, “She’s just a machine - bloody brilliant!” Kim’s passion is to be a positive role model for women and children saying, “Whether you win or not it’s the challenge that’s important.” Fellow veteran, Leslie Saunders was second with a time of 31:37, followed by first-time runner, Shona Stephenson in 33:37. Leslie Saunders was also the recipient of this year’s Bruce Samuels Trophy for dedication and persistence. Other trophies were awarded as follows: Ann Daly Trophy for the most gallant effort – Allan Davies; Stan Topper Trophy for sportsmanship – Danuza & Dan Rogers (husband/wife); Col Jackson Trophy for the oldest Runner – Dennis Jackson. Festival chairperson, Heather Manders, said that the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club, organisers of the festival for thirty six years, were delighted with the day. “It was just great to see all our hard work come together. The Lions club puts its heart and soul into this event. We’re all volunteers and everyone puts in an incredible effort.” Next year’s race marks the 30th anniversary of Trans – Tasman competition. A long tradition of friendly rivalry began when New Zealander, Rosalie Hyland won the women’s category in 1985. Although Kiwi, Helen Roundtree, won last year, it’s nine years since a New Zealand male took out the title. “This will be an exciting, humdinger of a race,” said Barry Stewart, “There’s a lot at stake. The Kiwis want to win badly and we want to stop them!” He says next year’s race will definitely be one not to miss. 1 Ben Duffus, 1st over the line 2 Kim Beckinsale & Leslie Saunders 3 Kim Beckinsale, 1st woman 4 Aaron Knight, Ben Duffus, Lance Downie

National tree day celebrations

pomona NAIDOC celebrated at Pomona SS NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year’s NAIDOC theme honours all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of country. Indigenous Australians have served Australia in all major conflicts from the Boer War to the present.

POMONA State School students got their hands dirty while celebrating National Tree Day on Friday 25 July, planting over 100 trees on the school grounds. With the assistance of the school’s Garden Club coordinators, Wayne Voss and Shaylene Brock, these students joined others from around 2500 kindergartens and schools nationally in this day of education and promotion of Australian trees. Planet Ark’s National Tree Day was created 18 years ago to focus community awareness on the importance of native trees in protecting and enhancing our natural environment. Toyota has long been a major sponsor of this

www.cooroyrag.com.au

event and representatives of local dealership John Madill Toyota attended Pomona State School’s parade on the day to donate a pack of gardening resources (including gloves, shirts, hats, bags and tree protectors) to assist with the plantings. These resources will also be well utilised by the school’s Garden Club for future projects. A certificate of appreciation was presented to John Madill Toyota in acknowledgement of their support. Planet Ark’s National Tree Day occurs on the last weekend of July every year. For more information on becoming involved in future National Tree Days, visit the website: www.treeday.planetark.org

Pomona students decorated a banner and the aboriginal and Torres Strait islander flags now proudly hang

in the school hall. The “Apology” has been framed and will be on show in the front office. Teachers and

students have been celebrating all things Indigenous as part of the NAIDOC celebrations 2014.

THE Noosa Strade Bianche is becoming a large event for lovers of vintage bikes. Over 130 riders pedalled over our hinterland gravel roads earlier this month. Photos courtesy Jay Clark

Sailing season begins! THE 2014 / 15 sailing season looms large on beautiful Lake Cootharaba have started on 16 /17 of August with the Boreen Point Real Estate All boats Regatta. It’s a season chock full of mucking about in boats, not so serious Sunday races, and racing for sheep stations - with a “raft” of National and State Championships through to May 2015. A new course safety boat has just been launched (thanks Elmsy) to lead a fleet of five boats dedicated to course management safety and training . The Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club is the perfect fit for the family or individual from 8 to 80 who want to learn the sailors grin - it’s the smile that only comes from spending a day in a boat without a motor. The wind is free, so the club matches that by teaching you to sail for free, in our boats and in your own time. All you have to do is turn up at the club on any Sunday during the season at about 9.00 am and ask for a free trial. Club membership then entitles you to learn to sail at your own pace and with no additional cost. Training is also given to people who may not particularly want to sail but are in-

terested in being part of our race management team, i.e. starting races, setting courses and recording results. There are plenty of jobs and ways of contributing to a great local club. While you are out there spend some time watching the racing, training and chat to the people on the beach with the grins on their faces, that’s us and we would like it to be you. We’ve got the boats, the buoys, the barbecue, the bar and a bucket of fun. See you at Boreen Point. Website: www.lcsc.org.au Enquiries: Ph 54850727

Go the Demons! AS the AFL season comes to an end and September creeps closer we would like to than all our sponsors for their support this year. Also a big thank you to all the coaches, team managers, umpires, canteen helpers and anyone else who gives up their time and volunteers to help, without you there would be no club. THANK YOU. Our Under 8s and Under 10s played their end of season carnival on the weekend and from all reports had a great time. Under 12s finish on top of ladder and begin their finals campaign next week. Please get around these guys and support them as a club, it would be great to pull in yet another flag for the club. Under 14s just missed the finals and played their last game on the weekend. Under 16s Finish the season as a DIV 1 side and played their elimination final on Sunday. Being undermanned they lost after giving everything they had and defiantly deserved to be classed as a DIV 1 U16 side which is the top grade of junior footy on the coast. So while some are hanging the boots up there is still plenty to be done as Junior presentation day comes around on Saturday 13th September. Seniors are once again into finals after another good season despite many players missing games due to working away. Grand final is Saturday 06th September so hopefully we will see you all there! The old boys (Masters) still keep on going and have another game left up at Hervey Bay on the 31st.

Congratulations Zane! A BIG congratulations to Zane Jenkins (Year 11 NDSHS student). Zane competes in the Gravity Enduro Mountain Bike Series and after a recent competition he is now placed 3rd overall in Southeast Queensland.
