Entry is free and there will be some great prizes and gift vouchers to win on the day through the raffle. The kids will love the pony rides, hay rides, petting zoo and jumping castle and we know the parents will enjoy the practical, interesting and creative ideas to enhance the appearance and the value of their homes, gardens and properties. Profits from the day will go to a wonderful community event hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce ... Christmas in Cooroy. The Chamber of Commerce is a proud supporter of the Cooroy Landscape Supplies Spring Fair. Many of the businesses involved are members of the Chamber and are uniting to support and engage with this great community in which we all live. The first day of Spring ... what better way to spend it than at a Spring Fair! See you all there - Cooroy Landscape Supplies, 50 Mary River Road, Cooroy (Opposite the sports fields. Entry is via Jarrah Street). Tip - Make sure you travel via Garnet Street this year due to the bridge closure at the lower end of Maple Street.

THE Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends have certainly exceeded themselves with the quantity and quality of plant and other stallholders coming to this year’s Plant Fair on Father’s Day at the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Returning from previous years is the man with all those much sought after rare and collectable plants, Stephen Flood and Wanda Hirth from Grandma’s Garden and Anne Borthwicke with her amazing variety of geraniums. If ever there was a plant variety that attracts those of us who tend to kill our plants through forgetfulness, it is the tillandsias. You don’t plant them in soil and they seem to exist just on air (almost!). Margaret Patterson will be there again with her extensive varieties of tillandsias and bromeliads to help us forgetful gardeners. For those who love a perfumed garden and home , Eumundi Roses and Aromatic Flowers’ Graham Etheridge as well as John Robertson with his orchids are returning. Just raise your nose in the air, sniff, and follow the perfume to where their stalls are located. And how we love our local native heliconias and gingers. Maureen Simons is back and she will be bringing some of her edible ones too. Talking of food, Sustainable Cuisine plant guru Kevin Redd will be there. This year Ken Scott from Sunshine Coast Tropical Ferns and Foliage will be joining in, as will Wilsons Succulents. And our own local Noosa & District Landcare group will have plenty of native trees, shrubs and plants so that we can entice our rich and colourful birdlife, bees and insects to our gardens. Creative ceramicist and potter, Wendy Britton, puts a witty quirky twist to many of her feathered and human clay ‘friends’. Wendy’s pottered (and ‘potty’) creations adorn many a patio, garden and swimming pool landscaping. Wendy will also be bringing along her new recently created series – bathing beauties – colourful in their bespoke togs and just the thing to add to your pool landscaping. And if it is larger statement pieces for your landscape you are seeking, Natalia and Duncan Broadhead from Broadcroft Designs will be bringing along some of their fabulous metalwork creations. To maximise quality and minimize impact, they make everything themselves using Australian made materials and local suppliers. If you are looking for something special for your garden or are looking for something more ambitious and individual, they can make that too. And for something very special to view, Shane Christensen, a skilled wood carver who creates using fallen trees, stumps and old fence posts, will create a habitat for native bees from a previously felled tree in the Gardens. “Tree Spirit” a recent work was created from a fallen blue gum, carved into an abstract human with hair fashioned from the tree roots and a mouth big enough for a feather tail glider or micro bat. Shane subsequently reduced the entrance hole size to suit a stingless native bee. So much to see at this year’s Plant Fair. Recommend you get there early. Mayor Tony Wellington officially opens the Fair at 9.45am. Entry is free. And all net proceeds go back into supporting the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Open at 9am. Food and beverage available. Put it in your diary now. Sunday 2nd September. See you there!

IT’S just over a week before the Pomona Showgrounds will host the 109th annual Noosa Country Show. On September 7 and 8, animals, side show alley and entertainment will fill the grounds and a total of 18 competition sections will take place. There will be something for everyone. Noosa’s traditional country show will see a variety of competition sections that help celebrate the diversity of people and their talents in our community. Equestrian, stud beef, dairy cattle, poultry and dog sections will all be on show in 2018, and Saturday brings the must-see woodchop comp beside the Country Noosa local produce stall. Noosa Show Society President, Cameron Magick said he’s delighted with the shape the show is taking and the efforts of so few for so many over the two days. “We’re very happy with the way it’s all coming together in 2018, thanks to our committee who continue to put everything they have into the show’s success allowing us to showcase the very best of Noosa Country to so many,” he said. “It’s a fantastic show program in 2018, and we have to thank our many sponsors. Noosa Council has been a great support

It's Noosa Country Show time along with the team at the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank who continue to be our major supporters,” Cameron added. Located near the main entry gate, animal nursery shows will take place at 11.00am and 2.00pm, and interactive farm feeding of baby animals with bottles of milk will happen at 9.00am and 6.00pm. Kids can meet and get a photo with a variety of entertainers across both days. Fireworks will light up the night sky on Friday night and two

stages will be jammed packed throughout the show. Great bands will include Hard Labour, Shades of Grey and Robin and the Hoods. They will be followed by Smoke and Mirrors, Contraband, Fiona O’Shea & The Passengers, FYG Chutney and Uncle Bob’s Jug Band. Kids can enjoy The Kangagang on Friday and bring their pooch in for the Loveable Mutley competition after the Dog Show to win great prizes. This year, there will be a honky-tonk rodeo on Saturday night and horse

events happening right across the two days. The ever-favourite Classic Car Show and Ute Muster will shake things up on Saturday. Grab a coffee and cake at Champion Café in the Pavilion while you check out the Creative Craft, Cookery, Horticulture and Fruit ‘n’ Vege, Junior Art and Woodcraft sections are a must visit. Whether it’s watching miniature horses or enjoying facepainting, the choices are endless. The show is also affordable for families. Adults’

tickets are $15.00 per day, children are $10.00 and a family pass for one day is $35 for up to two adults and three children. You can also prepurchase your tickets to avoid the line-up at the gate by calling the show office on 5485 2331. Don’t forget the exhibitors’ pass of $10 for entire Noosa Country Show is also available, with show members and volunteers gaining free admission. For more information, go to w w w. n o o s a s h o w society.org.au for all the details.

Tip-toe through the hinterland THE Great Noosa Trail Walk is only a month away, on the long weekend of 29 September to 1 October and tickets are still available but probably not for long. With only 150 walkers and volunteer guides participating on the walk through the Noosa Hinterland, participants experience some of the very best of Noosa Hinterland’s nature, culture and communities. So it is understandable why this once a year event is so popular. The series of trails chosen traverse Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts. Walkers

undertake the walk at their own pace with time to enjoy the landscape, local cafes, antique shops and attractions encountered on route. A reasonable level of walking fitness is required, but this is not a race, plenty of time is allowed to complete each day’s walk. Trail guides will be on the route providing assistance and information about the history and landscape. The Great Noosa Trail Walk prides itself on being a safe and enjoyable way for people to experience the quiet beauty of the Noosa Hinterland with volunteers and trails guides along the tracks to make sure walkers don’t lose their way and get the most out of their trail. As well as guides, the Walk offers a shuttle service that transports walkers’ heavy luggage and camping gear to each evening’s Page 4 - Cooroy Rag, August 29, 2018

campsite, freeing up walkers so they can really enjoy their time and stop and smell the roses. The trail boasts a beautiful scenic walk with sights beyond compare, and thanks to the volunteers who work tirelessly over the long weekend, walkers of varying fitness levels are able to see and enjoy every bit of it. The 2017 event was cancelled due to extreme heat, dry weather and fires so the return of the event in 2018 has been eagerly anticipated by many. Nearly half of the available spots have already been booked and the event is looking to sell out again for another year. Tickets for the three day walk are $240 and includes camping fees and some meals as well as luggage transportation. To book head to www.greatnoosatrail walk.com.au. www.cooroyrag.com.au

Miss Noosa Showgirl and Noosa Rural Ambassador winners

HANDBAG SALE UP TO

50% OFF WINTER CLEARANCE CONTINUES ... LAST DAYS!

Every Dad deserves a Gourmet Congratulations to Caspar Osborne for taking out Tiny Tot Ambassador; Sharnylee Osborne for Mini Noosa Show Ambassador; Aarabella Hutchings for Noosa Show Ambassador; Emily Graham Miss Junior Showgirl; Carlee Magick for Junior Rural Ambassador; Bethany Walpole Noosa Rural Ambassador, Natasha Osborne Miss Noosa Showgirl and Belle of the Ball Jordan Gray. Winning Miss Showgirl this year has really been thrilling. I’ve met many new people and gained many great friends over my journey with the show committee. I entered three years ago as a Junior Rural Ambassador to help a friend out and I’ve been with the show ever since. At the time I didn’t realise what I was missing out on until I gave it a go and let’s just say that it really roped me in. Now it’s taken me three years to get to where I wanted to be and I couldn’t have wished for it any other way. We have had our ups and our downs but we all grow taller and stronger together as a show. I can’t wait to see what the new year brings to us. With my show family by my side and my best friends as our Rural Ambassador for 2018 our next stop is sub chamber next year! To all the younger generation I can’t express enough what a great opportunity it is to be involved with the awards. After all, the future of agricultural shows lie in your hands. Natasha Osborne

The past 12 months as Miss Noosa Showgirl has given me so much more than I could’ve ever thought possible. I’m eager and honoured to have now secured the role of Noosa Rural Ambassador for 2018 and I can’t wait to see what the oncoming year holds in the next chapter of my show journey. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the lead up to committing to the role of Noosa Rural Ambassador. From photo shoots, to meeting locals and discovering what our show movement provides them, and to luncheons and community dinners, it’s been an exciting few weeks and I can’t wait for the thrill of the coordinated chaos of which is the lead up to our 2018 Noosa Country Show. To any young person who has considered applying for the showgirl and rural ambassador Awards, I can’t encourage you enough to take that first step and get in contact with us. It’s truly an incredible experience that has given me confidence, people skills and memories to last a life time! Bethany Walpole

Connecting with our community is more important than anything. It’s something we do better than most in the hinterland. But what about when a bank says it has a connection with its community? Does it make you suspicious or feel there must be a catch? Well, the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank is locally owned by our shareholders. It has now returned more than $700,000 to local schools, clubs and organisations in the past few years. How local? To use one example, we have supported Noosa Country Show for a number of years now and we’re behind them again this year. You can read more about that in the story in this edition of Cooroy Rag. Then there’s Cooroy State School. Our commitment to the school has included laptops, robotics programs and a partnership with Rotary Club of Cooroy and Cooroy State School in the annual East Timor Shoe Box collection and more. At Pomona State School, similar projects like Mini-lit programs, the breakfast club program, new books for the library and Pomona in the Park… and we’re only just getting started. Why? Because we wouldn’t be here without their support…your support. Through our customers’ banking we generate profits that go into supporting recipients just like Cooroy and Pomona State Schools. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing with our community. Our Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches give our communities a real say in their future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a

successful bank - in that order. As we work to provide banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. So, if you’re interested in banking where the customer is connected to the bank, give us a try. We have a full range of products just like any full-service bank and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most. Geoff, Darryl and I and all the team will be more than happy to share more of our story with you and deliver the right advice and the products you need. Please feel free to drop into the branches or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona).. You can also email me at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

news Super investment options – what’s right for you?

COOROY RAG

PET SHOP IN COOROY

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* CHOOSING the right super investment options at the right time could make a difference to how much money you have when you retire. When it comes to your superannuation, the investment options you choose today and in future may impact how much money you retire with. If you haven’t selected an investment option within your super, you’re probably invested in your fund’s default option, which will generally take a balanced approach to risk and return. Typically, no less than 9.5% of your before-tax salary (if you’re eligible) is paid into super, which is then taxed at a maximum of 15%. Your super fund will invest this money over the course of your working life, so you can hopefully retire comfortably. Your super fund will let you choose from a range of investment options and generally the main difference will be the level of risk you’re willing to take to potentially generate higher returns. If you haven’t selected an investment option, your super fund will usually put you into a default option,

which generally means your exposure to risk and return is somewhere in the middle. If you’re not sure what options you’re invested in, contact your super provider. What are the super investment options I can choose from? Most super funds let you choose from a range, or mix of investment options and asset classes. These might include ‘growth’, ‘balanced’, ‘conservative’ and ‘cash’ but the terms can differ across super funds. Here’s a small sample of the typical type of investment options available: • Growth options aim for higher returns over the long term, however losses can also be notable when markets aren’t performing. They typically invest around 85% in shares or property. • Balanced options don’t tend to perform as well as growth options over the long term, but the loss is also less when there are market downturns. They typically invest around 70% in shares or property, with the rest in fixed interest and cash.

• Conservative options generally aim to reduce the risk of market volatility and therefore may generate lower returns. They typically invest around 30% in shares and property, with the rest in fixed interest and cash. • Cash options aim to generate stable returns to safeguard the money you’ve accumulated. They typically invest 100% in deposits with Australian deposit-taking institutions, such as banks, building societies and credit unions. Super funds may have different allocations, so it’s important to read your super fund’s product disclosure statement before making any decisions. What’s the right investment option for me? Choosing the most suitable investment option generally comes down to your goals for retirement, your attitude to risk and the time you have available to invest. For instance, if you’re young, you may have more time to ride out market highs and lows, and therefore be willing to take on more risk in the hope of achieving higher returns. If you’re closer to being

a Special G i f t t o o u Communrity

able to access your super, you may prefer a conservative approach as a share market crash could be harder to recover from than if you’re 20 years away from retirement. Different options may suit you at different ages. To help you determine what investor style you are, or if you would like to explore strategies further, please contact us on 07 5447 7740 While many people put off thinking about super, being informed and engaged from a young age and throughout your career may make a big difference to the returns generated and your final super

Train takes out power lines The open door that hit the power lines

A northbound freight train brought down high voltage power lines in Cooroy Saturday night (August 18) shutting down the station for days. Buses replaced the train service between Nambour and Gympie stations while repair work was carried out. Although investigations are being carried out by Queensland Rail, it looks like an open container door was the culprit with it swinging up and hitting the traffic bridge taking out the power lines for about 500 metres. Witnesses said the noise was indescribable. Police and SES were there within minutes with guards stationed at the closed footbridge to make sure no one entered the station near the fallen lines.

Council staff will review the service after the current collection period and make recommendations to Council. “Unfortunately, the service is being abused, with people using it as an excuse to dump massive quantities of rubbish on street corners and outside other people’s homes – in fact, wherever they like,” Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer said. “Much of the material is not even accepted as part of the kerbside collection, such as tyres, mattresses, chemicals and even broken glass. “On the fringes of the Shire we are also finding extremely large piles of waste appearing, potentially from residents of neighbouring shires who don’t enjoy a kerbside collection service. We have to revisit many of these locations to remove the piles of waste at considerable cost, which is not fair to ratepayers who do the right thing. “At any other time of the

Community Relations Manager Chris Jones said 37 initiatives had received support through the program over the last two years. “We are thrilled to see these projects helping to improve the health of our region’s environment and the wellbeing of community members,” he said. “This year, the sponsorship program will offer a new category of plastic prevention to align with

r e h for

our own Back to Tap program, which encourages people to ditch single-use plastic water bottles for a reusable bottle and tap water. “We are looking to support initiatives that help educate our community on the impact of plastic waste and drive behavioural change to reduce consumption of single-use plastics. “In addition, the community wellbeing category now places a specific focus on supporting our region’s youth and helping to alleviate the impacts of domestic violence and homelessness. “We encourage organisations that fit these categories to get in touch and find out if they’re eligible.” Applications close 4 October. New store will have your rooster strutting COOROY Country Menswear and Jeanery opened their doors on Tuesday 7th August 2018 as part of their soft opening and the team said the response from the community has been amazing. The team consists of Kerry Martin and her Daughterin-Law Joanne Hill. They are both locals of the Sunshine Coast for 10 years and have purchased their homes in Cooroy, four and three years ago respectively. They both love the town and the spirit of the community and want to stay in Cooroy forever. Opening the store in town means Kerry is excited by the prospect that she can now walk to work each morning. The project has been in the making for over 12 months with the thought process kicking off when Kerry was running out of time to buy her husband a present and didn’t have time to head out to Noosaville. She dashed up town only to find that there wasn’t anything she could find suitable as a gift, and realised that even through there are many dedicated stores for women, there was no menswear store in town. “The location was the tricky part of the process,

there were a few opportunities but the one that I really thought was the best spot, was where the Endevour store was,” said Kerry. “The process stalled for a while, but it was only a couple of months later, that we saw the sign go up in the Endevour store that said they were closing down. We found out that they had been in that spot for about 30 years and so it seemed to us that it was meant to be and it all moved pretty quickly from there.” Kerry said, she has been very humbled by the response from the community, with people taking the time to pop in and thank them for opening a menswear store and to wish us well. “The community of Cooroy is very important to us and we plan to support the local events and fundraisers as much as we can,” said Kerry. “We’ll be attending the Cooroy Black Tie Ball in November to support the Cooroy Piano Fund organised by the lovely Pamela Sweetapple at Cooroy Legal Centre and will hold fundraiser days for community groups with a percentage of sales on the day going back to various clubs

Joanna Hill and Kerry Martin are thrilled with the response of the community to the opening of their new store - Cooroy Country Menswear & Jeanery and schools. “I invite any members of groups to contact me directly on 0433 130 107.” Cooroy Country Menwear and Jeanery carry Wrangler and Thomas Cook lines and whilst they are essentially a menswear store they also carry a range of womens and childrens clothing and of course Jeans for all. They are also stocking Havaianas and a great range of bags and gifts for all the men in the house. To explain the Rooster on the sign, Kerry said it is a bit of fun as she often re-

fers to her husband as a good looking rooster and since the store was started, in a way because of him, it is Kerry’s homage to him. But also she said, it is a call out to all the other good looking roosters in town to come in and see what we have for them. Their website at www.cooroymenswear.com.au has all items that are available in store, so have a look online at their stock. “You can have a look on the Thomas Cook and Wrangler websites and if there is anything you would like, we can order it in and you

can try it on before you buy,” says Kerry. Gift vouchers are available as well as layby and Afterpay is also on the way. The team are planning a grand opening day for Saturday 1st September, where there will be gift/ goody bags for the first 50 customers on the day, balloons for the kids. Kerry has her measuring tape at the ready, so pop down and see her, she can help all those Roosters out there that may or may not help in choosing an outfit.

news Great community support for Mountain Spring Festival

COOROY RAG

OVER 2,000 visitors came to the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival held on Sunday 19August to enjoy the one day in the year that access to the Mountain is kindly granted by Peter Lavin, owner of Cooroy Mountain Spring Water. “We were delighted with the support we received from the community. This is a major event to raise money for good causes and this year the main beneficiaries are the Rotary and National Farmers Federation Drought Appeal where 100% of the funds received go to farmers and our local disability support group in

Tewantin, Sunshine Butterflies,” said Warren O’Neill, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy. “A big thank you goes to our generous sponsors. In addition to Cooroy Mountain Spring Water; McDermott Aviation donated a helicopter to provide rides and facilitated the helicopter ball drop raffle, Greenwood Grove provided our Observation and I Spy Trail through the rainforest, Madill Motor Group sponsored music from the Noosa Concert Band and the Pineapple Crush Ukulele Band, AAction Traffic pro-

vided the tractor hay rides, Hinternoosa sponsored the toilets and recycling bins, and Mowers and ATV Cooroy provided the use of an ATV to ferry supplies and assist disabled visitors to get about the festival site. Generous support for the Festival also came from Raine and Horne, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Cooroy Rag. “We are most grateful for the support of an amazing 72 volunteers without whom this event would not happen. Members of Cooroy Rotary were assisted by the Eumundi Rotary Club, students and members of the Interact Club at the Noosa District High School, the Rotaract Club of the Sunshine Coast, members from the Cooroy Golf Club and the Cooroy Memorial Hall plus local residents who all worked tirelessly to prepare for the event and to ensure everything ran

smoothly on the day,” added Warren. A new feature this year was the helicopter ball drop raffle; with great precision pilot Lochie Tremain-Hill from McDermott Aviation dropped 1,000 numbered tennis balls directly on the target. Prize winners 1st prize - $2,000 - Gary Shepherd - 2nd prize $500 plus $100 bonus for being at the ball drop Robyn M - 3rd prize - $250

- Lyndal Brown - $100 to each - 4th - Sue O’Hagan -5th - Luke Coyle - 6th Marilyn Davis - 7th Amanda Loo Gee - 8th Joanne Hill - 9th - Sean Francis - 10th – Hodda. Gross income this year is approaching $40,000 before any expenses of running the event – a superb result and we will let you know the final balance as soon as counting is complete.

Helping Aussie Farmers!

“Being kind feels good” – Mackenzie THE Kindness Club and Cooroy Outside School Hours Care are helping our Aussie Farmers through the collection of groceries. The children have been talking about our Aussie farmers and how they are struggling to cope with drought conditions. Children have discussed the role farmers play in all our lives, different types of farms, the hard work required to grow crops and raise livestock, and their own connections to farming. The children, staff and families are adding a few extra groceries to their shopping baskets to help our farmers during this difficult time. Our groceries will be delivered to Raine and Horne in Cooroy who have been a collection point for Drought Angels. Drought Angels are a registered not-for-profit charity who support Aussie farmers and their rural communities. Please contact Pene McSwain at Raine and Horne on 5444 6002 for more information about their grocery collection. “There’s a big drought and farmers are trying to save animals. People are helping them and giving them money and food ” – Ben (9 years) There are

many ways to help Drought Angels get aid to our farmers: IGA and pre-paid visa cards can be posted to Drought Angels at PO box 451, Chinchilla, Qld, 4413; Direct deposit: Drought Angels Ltd, Commonwealth Bank, BSB: 064409, Account: 10184522 (email Drought Angels for a receipt: accounts@droughtangels.org.au); or head over to their web page www.droughtangels.org.au to buy a bale of hay, a grocery box or care package to supply a farmer with some much needed assistance. Other wonderful organisations supporting our farmers and rural communities include: Aussie Helpers, Rural Aid, Buy A Bale, Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, and Lion’s Need For Feed. “Farmers grow all sorts of stuff for us, so we should help them” – Kyla (9 years) Let’s show our farmers some love! “Little hearts can make a big difference” The Kindness Club, c/- Cooroy Outside School Hours Care, P.O Box 816, Cooroy. thekindnessclub@outlook.com

Woodworkers annual show

The Cooroora Woodworkers Club Annual Show returns to the Cooroy Memorial Hall. The show now in its 29th year has always been at the

Hall except in 2016 and 2017 when the Hall was under repair. The club expects that the new show date of Friday 28th and Saturday 29th September will attract many new visitors. The competitions which are the heart of the show have been revised to attract more entries from other clubs, schools and organisations. All the entries will be on display and the quality will be impressive. The main raffle prize this

year is a lovely blanket box made by members of the club from local Kauri Pine and New Guinea Rosewood. This versatile and attractive storage unit measuring 120x50x50cm is valued at over $1000. Tickets are on sale at $2 each now at various sites around Cooroy as well as at the Clubhouse and finally at the Cooroy Memorial Hall where the winning ticket will be drawn during the show around 3pm on Saturday 29th September.

Ibsy passed peacefully in his sleep at home with Ishjana. Although sadly missed, the memory of his beautiful spirit will live on in the hearts of Ishjana and Ibsy’s family, Duke, his sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews, cousins and his many friends. Ibsy’s wish was to be cremated without any service as he had a living wake where he was joined by his many friends and family. RIP Ibsy – gone too soon- never to be forgotten.

dining & entertainment Past, Present, Future for Bendigo Bank Street Parade

IT’S time to open the costume cupboard, bust out those sequins, and get ready for Christmas in Cooroy and the Bendigo Bank Street Parade! This year’s theme is “Past, Present, Future”, so you can expect there will be some interesting floats from local community groups and businesses alike! Will we see a DeLorean with Marty McFly and Doc Brown? Or maybe a futuristic spaceship coming to whisk people off to times unknown? Or perhaps a flash back to a significant period from the past like the Roaring 20s or the Roman Empire. One thing is for certain – there will be lollies, lights, and laughs for all to share. Christmas in Cooroy is one of the most anticipated events of the festive season. With free rides, entertainment, and even an appearance from the jolly man in red; it is truly no wonder that crowds flock to enjoy this incredible festival. But what is our amazing Christmas festival without a magical street parade? Every year Christmas in Cooroy showcases the best dressed floats the Noosa Hinterland has to offer and the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank has been proudly sponsoring the Street Parade for over a decade. “We are always pleased to be involved with Christmas in Cooroy as it’s so much fun and it really show-

cases Cooroy’s amazing community spirit. Volunteers, community groups and businesses all work together to produce something quite special. The event has a wonderful community atmosphere and it’s an event we are proud to support,” said Cooroy Community Bank Business Development Manager, Geoff Edwards. Christmas in Cooroy is hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy. This phenomenal free community festival would not be possible without the support of the many volunteers and businesses. Noosa Council provides a community grant and everything at the event from rides to the Santa visit is free thanks to Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Rag, Mower & ATV Solutions, Cooroy SUPA IGA, Cooroy RSL, Cooroy Hotel, Noosa Care, John Madill Toyota, Madill Holden, Cooroy Family Practice, Wythes Real Estate, Cooroy Fish & Chips, Cooroy Legal Centre, The Leather Doctor, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Live Life Pharmacy, Sunshine Mitre 10, Gelignite Jacks, SPV Accounting, SPM Law, The Shed @ Cooroy, Cooroy Computers and Cooroy Pest Control. health Hypnotherapy can create change

COOROY RAG

Sharna Brook has been a Gympie local for over 25 years. While studying primary teaching at University she majored in Psychology for three years before finding her passion in hypnotherapy. She is now an accredited hypnotherapist. “Although I found the field of Psychology interesting, my fascination for hypnosis began with my own crusade to stop smoking two years ago when I saw a fantastic hypnotherapist. He not only helped me kick my habit but started me on an incredible journey, exploring the amazing worlds of Hypnosis and NLP,” said Sharna. “Fast forward two years and I myself am now an accredited Hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner and Coach, trained by some of the best in the field at the exclusive Mind Academy in Noosa. “I now own and operate Gympie Modern Hypnosis and currently work from my home office. In a few weeks I will be setting up a second office at Gympie’s newest gym, NRG Health Club. The gym will be fitted out with only the best of everything on the top floor, while on the bottom floor we have a few practitioners offering a range of different modalities. These so far include a Natropath, Masseuse, Kinesiologist and myself. We will be open to all the public, not just members of the gym. Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness and this focus is necessary to create change. “Hypnotherapy is completely different to what a lot of people expect,” said Sharna. “Many people are actually quite fearful or nervous of it as their only knowledge of hypnosis comes from what they have seen happen on stage. Stage hypnosis, although real, is completely different to hypnotherapy. Through hypnotherapy, I can help guide you to make some incredible changes.” Hypnotherapy can help with over 200 different issues and Sharna says some of the most common issues she sees with her clients include weightloss, smoking, anxiety, depression and pain. Others include memory regression, confidence, insomnia, libido, gambling, drug addiction and phobias. “The list is endless. When you are hypnotised

you can expect to feel very relaxed and be able to hear everything I say. You remain 100% in control at all times throughout the session. It is simply not possible to make someone do something against their will whilst hypnotised. There are two purposes for inducing hypnosis, to administer positive suggestion for change in the future or to understand something that has happened in the past. By bypassing what we call the critical faculty, we can enter ones unconscious mind and it’s here that we can access resources that are incomprehensible to the conscious mind. Change then occurs as new information can be allowed in with a non-critical evaluation. “My ideas for the future include possible fortnightly visits to smaller communities in the Mary Valley such as Cooroy, Pomona, Imbil and Cooran. I’d also really like to build up our holistic community in Gympie so clients can come to us once they have been spat out the other end by things like cancer and be rehabilitated in the one place with a personally tailored programme using the relevant modalities.” Find Sharna on facebook or visit www.gympiemodernhypnos.wixsite.com/mysite or phone 0424 229 041 for more information.

Is healthy eating making you unhealthy? IT’S a common story: you eat well and yet the results aren’t fully there. Some people find that despite doing everything right, they just can’t shift weight from parts of the body or health conditions are not improving. There are a number of dietary factors that contribute to the health of each unique individual, so consultation with a qualified health professional is always recommended. However, a relativity common cause for many health issues (despite eating what we might think is a healthy diet) is insulin resistance. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. “One function of the hormone insulin is to get cells to take up excess sugar from the blood. Insulin also sends excess blood sugar to fat stores. Carbohydrates (bread, cereals, rice, pasta and anything sweet) tend to increase blood sugar so more insulin is produced. Over time this makes cells resistant to insulin so more sugar remains in the blood causing damage to the body. To compensate, the body produces more insulin making the problem worse. If this trend is left unchecked, it can become a root cause for: obesity, fatty liver, some neurological conditions and diabetes. “One method for reducing the negative effects of insulin resistance is a ketogenic diet. The goal of ketogenic diet is to have the body using mostly fat for energy. This generally happens when carbohydrate intake is low enough to cause insulin levels to drop. The body then starts to break down fat, producing ketones for energy. This state is known as nutritional ketosis.

“Nutritional ketosis is normal and healthy for the body. Most people experience the appetite suppressing effects of nutritional ketosis, and, with the body in fat burning mode rather than fat storage mode, it becomes good at removing excess stores. This is why people often successfully use ketogenic diets for weight loss. “Getting the right amount of carbohydrate, fat and protein is essential and the best balance is usually different for each person. “Nutritional ketosis is not just for weight loss. In fact, people who are trying to gain or maintain weight often benefit. There is also mounting evidence to suggest that it has other health benefits including improved mitochondrial production (more energy and healthier cells), protection and regeneration of the nervous system, antioxidant effects (protection from cell damage and disease), preservation of muscle mass (major factor in longevity) and prevention of growth of some cancers. “Of course, anyone taking insulin (type 1 or late stage diabetics) or anyone with a serious health condition should consult an experienced health practitioner before starting a ketogenic diet. Like most health sciences, dietary science is always evolving. The goal is to find a diet that best supports your own health and longevity.” Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. For more information call 0419 668 803, or visit www.nutritionmeans.com.au

Deb, who has worked there for 22 years said that the store has gone from strength to strength. “It’s very well supported by the community. Books for drought relief LIONS Clubs throughout Australia have launched a national appeal to raise $500,000 to help our farming families. Those funds will be quickly dispersed to local Lions Clubs in drought affected communities for fodder and other essential items to assist families. Because it’s Lions you know that 100% of money raised will go to people in need. The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club are holding their next Bookfest on Saturday, 8th September and all proceeds will go straight to this appeal. Lions Vicki Dessaix and Coral Salmon have started on the mammoth task of classifying and presenting thousands of books for sale at the Lions Den in Pomona. Bed 3; Bath 2; Car 2; 600sqm Price: $749,000 Situated on the eastern side of the beautiful Noosa Hinterland township of Cooroy, just a short walk to all the shops and cafes, is this absolutely stunning, architect designed home that will delight even the most discerning of buyers. High quality throughout and strength in the build too, with a core filled rendered block exterior whilst inside there’s beautiful wide floating timber boards and carpet for comfort in the gorgeous generous size bedrooms. This stunning home presents as new and offers a spacious floor plan especially designed for today’s way of life. Soaring ceilings in the air conditioned open plan living and 9' ceilings throughout the rest of the home, the colour palette is a neutral décor with splashes of modern grey. At the heart of the home is the inspirational kitchen with plenty of Caesar stone bench tops, 900mm stainless steel cooker and loads of drawers and cupboards, even a built in wine rack. The double drawer dishwasher is also handy for after those

bigger entertaining get togethers or tasty cook ups. This decadent area of kitchen dining and lounge flows through double glass door sliders to a huge timber covered deck with pull down UV blinds on either side so this area can be enjoyed no matter the weather. Back inside the main bedroom boasts a resort style ensuite with floor to ceiling glossy tiles and a discreet frameless shower. The main bathroom servicing the other 2 bedrooms mirrors this luxurious style too. A handy second separate lounge room could be an ideal media room, 4th bedroom or just another area to enjoy when a little more solitude is required. Other features include vacuum maid, ceilings fans, workshop room off the double garage, and an outlook into treed park land and the delightful birdsong that goes with that. So if you are ready to downsize without compromise then this home with urban sophistication might be the one. Call me to arrange your private viewing. Exciting season ahead for Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club THERE has been a change of management at Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club. At the recently held AGM, long serving President John Hope stepped down from the role he had held for over 7 years. During his tenure, John guided the Club to a number of Premierships and One Day Titles, and ensured the Club has a sound financial and membership base to help future success and prosperity. The Club owes a huge debt of gratitude to John for his efforts over the years, and we wish him well for the future. Replacing John as President is Australian Junior Coach of the Year, Darrel Forrest. Darrel has been Junior Coordinator at the Club for a number of years, and brings a wealth of cricket and management experience to the role. Joining him on the Executive Committee is Life Member Karen Woods as Secretary, Rob Plant as Vice President and Treasurer, and Ian Connell as Senior Coach. For the 2018/19 season, Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club will be fielding at least 2 Senior sides, Junior sides in the U11, U12, U13 and U15 competitons, and participating in the Woolworths sponsored ‘Junior Blasters’ and ‘U10 Master Blasters’ competitions, aimed at those juniors new to cricket. We encourage the particpation of girls into cricket as the emphasis on girls cricket

continues to grow. Exciting news for the start of this season, is the completion of the new training facility at the Cooroy Sporting Complex. The Club has invested significantly in the refurbishment of the training nets, which will provide an excellent facility for Seniors and Juniors alike. In addition to the new nets, is a new artificial wicket for the Number 2 Oval, which will complement the superb turf wicket already in place on Sel Bonnel Oval. Cooroy-Eumundi prides itself on being a family orientated Club, with an emphasis on fun based cricket for all levels and abilities. We are competitive at Senior grades, but also provide an excellent learning environment for those Juniors wishing to develop their game. So, the new committee would like to welcome and encourage cricketers of all ages and ability to come and join this friendly Club based in the beautiful hinterland town of Cooroy. Registrations are now open for the coming season, and can be completed online at www.playcricket.com.au or come down to the Club on Sunday August 19th between 2 and 4pm and have a look at our fantastic new training facility. For more information, please contact Darrel on 0416 335106, or our registrar Sue Hobbs at CECCRegistrar@gmail.com.

Cutters Corner Annual Arlo Crawford-Window Memorial Game

ROUND 17 was meant to be a clash against traditional foe Palmwoods but due to circumstances Palmwoods has to forfeit. This saw several players play reserve grade & an injury to Jarred Davis aka Richard Hands soured the game. Round 18 was the conclusion of the home & away fixtures & the Cutters had a home game against Kilcoy to warm up for the finals after being guaranteed 2nd spot on the ladder. This game was also the annual Arlo CrawfordWindow memorial

game. Once the game kicked off no inch was given by either team. A lucky try by Kilcoy opened the scoring which they backed up minutes later. Both were converted by the evergreen Troy Edwards who has been a thorn in side for many a year. The large & vocal crowd willed the boys back into the contest & Ben Hayes crossed for a double, the second of which was right on halftime. Both were uncovered leaving the halftime score at 12-8.

A fired up team came out for the 2nd half but uncharacteristic mistakes by the Cutters saw Kilcoy score again to the the score to 18-8. A converted try by Jake Bullen ensured a tight finish but on this night Kilcoy were too strong. Final score 18-14. Kyle Jones was the man of the match with Luke Martin receiving 2 points & Jon Broad 1. With finals starting stay up to date with results & matches at www.facebook.com/ officalpomona coorancutters
