THE Stud Beef Section at this year’s Noosa Country Show will be of top class with Noosa’s local girl Miss Lucy Roche’s, Dynamite Kryptonite being exhibited at the 2016 Noosa Country Show. Lucy gained her love for cattle through the Noosa District High School’s Agricultural program and being a member of the Cattle Show Team run by Mr John Masterman. After duxing Agriculture in year 12, has gone onto breeding her own cattle and building a stud name. In only 3 years from starting her own stud name Dynamite Brangus, she has managed to win Grand Champion Brangus Bull at this year’s Ekka, fulfilling a life dream. Lucy is also a descendant of the first Chairman and founder of the Noosa Show Society, Joseph William Napier, an original pioneer of the Shire. The Stud Beef are on show on Saturday 10th September with judging starting at 8am. Young Handlers and Judges are on from Friday at 2.30pm with the future of our beef industry competing to go on with the honour of representing our Noosa
Shire. Dairy Cattle, which was once the biggest local industry, will be on Show from 9am Friday the 9th September, with the top gong going to the “Supreme Champion Cow or Heifer”. Dairy Junior Judges and Handlers will follow the cattle judging. There are positive young people involved with these industries and they are the future prime cattle producers of the country in which we should support says Noosa Show Society’s President, Perene Barker. The Noosa Country Show has a class for everyone to be involved. Come and enjoy the biggest local event in the Shire which is now up to their 107th year, a real coming together to showcase and learn about the Noosa Shire. New supermarket approved for Cooroy
COOROY’S old Wimmers soft drinks factory site has been approved by Noosa
Council for a new gourmet-style supermarket. The development is
owned by the Zipf family. Councillors in planning committee this week raised no major objec-
tions to the Creekgold Pty Ltd application in Garnet St other than access to Wimmers laneway. Peter Zipf said he is hopeful the new supermarket will be up and running in the near future and is excited to bring the new market-place concept to shoppers. “It’s a new concept in fresh food retailing. We aim to provide the local community with quality fresh products and everyday supermarket items at competitive prices,” said Peter. Specialising in fresh organic produce, gourmet and continental lines with a marketplace style set up, the new development will be more than just a supermarket. :Wimmers Market Place
will promote healthy eating and active lifestyles and are committed to supporting the local community. We are looking at future initiatives in environmental sustainability and supporting local farmers and manufacturers. We look forward to engaging our customers in an exciting new shopping experience. “We’ve done a lot of research and we’re confident that the marketplace concept will benefit our customers by offering a more diverse range of products,” said Mr Zipf. Facing Garnet Street, the new complex will include 72 parking spaces both underground and rooftop.
Geoff Edwards is joined by Richard Barrie, Kathryn Cook, the class of 4WC and their teacher, Kirsty Walker (left) last week HIGH-TECH, high-fives are happening everywhere at Cooroy State School. The students of 4WC took time to thank one of their biggest supporters as they took delivery of their new Infinity laptops last week. Every child received one and they were put straight to work as the school is one of ten in the
region who have been selected to trial NAPLAN Online. As a NAPLAN Online trial school, Cooroy will be doing trials in the coming weeks and over the next two years until NAPLAN Online comes online nation-wide in 2019. Cooroy State School has been supported by the
Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank for the past seven years through the school’s robotics program. In 2014, the school introduced XO laptops in Prep, Year One and Year 2 classes with all children having their own touch screen device. These XO devices are a great accompaniment to
expandable to 64GB, 2GB of RAM, dual band Wi-Fi, its own on-board camera, a 10 hour battery and many other features. School principal, Richard Barrie says the support of Bendigo Bank enabled the expansion of this program and will soon become invaluable for more students at Cooroy State School. On hand to help deliver the laptops to their new owners, Cooroy Community Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said he continues to be impressed how the school acts strategically on behalf of its students. “I look forward to returning in the coming months to see how the NAPLAN Online trials have gone and watch the kids put them through their paces. “Needless to say, we’re delighted to be involved,” he added. Anyone wanting to know more information about the Infinity laptops can do so by calling Cooroy State School on 5472 2100.

The Infinity laptop is the next generation of the XO laptop and with the issue of the laptops last week, another step was taken in the Cooroy State School STEM journey. COOROY RAG Celebrating Seniors Week
Last week Diversional Therapist Craig Barnes and Caroline Swift of Noosa Care Inc, celebrated Seniors Week with the residents of Carramar organising bus trips, entertainment and morning teas. Residents from Kabara, Noosa Care Cooroy, joined the residents of Carramar for a formal luncheon, catered for by the dedicated staff from the dining room. Staff and volunteers became waiters to serve the 100 residents that attended the luncheon. Laughter and chatter was abundant between the three courses and smiles all around as they enjoyed each other’s company. Sandra Gilbert of Noosa Care gave a short speech, as did Craig, in his capacity as diversional therapist, who sees to their weekly activities. With the ages of these residents being between 80 and 103 years young, you have to consider the changes they would have witnessed over their lifetime. One volunteer commented, it was lovely to see so many smiling faces as they left the community hall, knowing we have given them a week of acknowledgement, that they are valuable members of the community.
Volunteers to help shape new sports plan COUNCIL is calling for volunteers with a keen interest in community sport and recreation to help prepare a new sport and active recreation plan for the shire. Councillor Joe Jurisevic said Noosa was renowned for being an active and sports-minded community and the new Noosa Sport and Active Recreation Plan would set priorities for Council and stakeholders to work toward. “We’re assembling the reference group to help develop the plan and determine priorities for sport and active recreation. Anyone interested should get in touch with Council,” he said. “The reference group will look at local sporting opportunities, facilities and the needs of Noosa’s 100+ sports clubs, as well as the thousands of residents who take part in these activities each week,” Cr Jurisevic said. The group will include volunteer members who represent a mix of different ages and interests, plus the State Government and Council staff. Community representatives will need to attend five or six meetings between September 2016 and 30 June 2017, with the possibility of completing some tasks outside of meeting times. To be considered, register you interest by emailing an outline of your experience and interests in sport and active recreation in Noosa to commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au by COB 14 September 2016. For more information contact Council on (07) 5329 6451 or email commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au
Letter to the editor IN reply to Mr Chris Simpson’s article in the last edition of the Cooroy Rag. Chris, you write that ‘the FACT is that the RSL has struggled for many decades to keep the hall open despite having limited meagre financial resources’. Where do you get your ‘facts’ from? I suspect that you are another victim of the perpetual propaganda machine. The fact is (I can table the documents if you wish) that the Cooroy RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club sold the Opal St premises for $1,100,000 and even after paying off all sorts of debts from both venues, they still showed a ‘profit on sale of bowling club assets’ of $379,108 in the

audited financial statement to 31/12/2014. So, along with the $15,000 raised for hall maintenance by private individuals (and held by the Club), why was the hall allowed to deteriorate? Surely it must be the number one priority of an RSL Club to look after its own Memorial Hall. Where does the money go? The above report also states an ‘employee benefits expense’ of $1,115,637. Hall rental and fundraising is quoted at $32,599. In the past the club has always been able to maintain the hall and progress, so why not now? Russell Butler, Cooroy

Councillor Jess Glasgow said the Group would advise Council on heritage priorities and the sorts of heritage projects it should take on. “This is a unique opportunity for locals with heritage expertise or a passion for Noosa’s history to help preserve, protect and promote the Shire’s cultural heritage,” Cr Glasgow said.
The group’s input and advice will also help Council decide where to invest the Shire’s Heritage Levy funds. Council has six positions to fill and the Reference Group will meet four times a year. Membership is for a period of up to two years. Nominations close on 21 September. Packaging - information worth knowing Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IT’S not always widely known by most banking customers, but by taking certain banking products at your branch there are sometimes very worthwhile discounts available on your home loans or home loan lines of credit. When I talk to my friends about banking, they usually want to know “What’s in it for me?” Sure, don’t we all? Well, you may need to check with your local branch on their particular policies but often you might be eligible for a discount on your variable loan interest rate. Also you may find that it is not just on your home loan rate that discounts are applicable. For instance on your everyday accounts, most fees and charges could be absorbed by the bank. These advantages are achieved by what we call Packaging. Packaging refers to the idea of having several specified accounts or nominated items of business relationships with your bank. For example: By taking out your home insurance with your banks affiliated insurer and you may receive a 0.5 % discount on your home loan rate. On a $250,000 loan that equates to over $1,200 in interest saved in one year. Also, if your everyday accounts are not currently with the same bank as your home loan provider, there may be benefits in changing
them. You might receive exemptions on account fees or alternatively a reduction in your home loan interest rate or both. Every individual customer’s situation is unique. There are some who might receive little or no advantage in adjusting their current banking or insurance circumstances. For many of us though, who want to be sure that they are making the most of their opportunities, the local bank branch is not far away. If you would like to discuss Packaging or any home loan matter, contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.
Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club COOROY-EUMUNDI Garden Club. The next meeting will be held on Monday, 12 September, at 9.30 am in Donna Dalgety’s garden, 3 Upland Court, Tinbeerwah. Guest speaker will be Sue Anderson who will talk about Moon Planting. Contact President Tony on 5442 7403 for information.

Insurance inside super – what you should know Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* TAKING out insurance through your super fund may be a cost effective way to get protection but the cover you have might not always be enough. More than 70% of Australian life insurance policies are currently held inside super.1 If it’s something you’ve been thinking about, there are a number of things to consider, including whether you have the right type of cover and enough of it. Let’s start with some of the basics: What types of insurance are available? Super funds generally offer three types of cover: • Life insurance which pays a lump sum on your death or the diagnosis of a terminal illness • Total and permanent disability (TPD) which pays a lump sum if you become disabled and are unable to work again • Income protection which provides a replacement income of up to 75% of your regular income if you can’t work due to illness or injury. What do the statistics show us?
Super funds are critical to providing life insurance cover for many Australians, however almost 95% of the population remains underinsured.2 Figures released by Rice Warner earlier this year show:3 • More than 13.5 million separate policies are held through super funds in Australia • Each year about 17,000 disability and 46,000 death benefits are paid through super • The median level of life cover through super meets about 60% of the average household’s basic needs, and just 38% of the amount required to ensure the same standard of living can be upheld after the death of a parent or partner • Median cover meets only 13% of TPD needs and 17% of income protection needs. What are the upsides of insurance through super? • It’s often cheaper because super funds purchase insurance policies in bulk • If you have an employer-sponsored plan, you may be able to negotiate further discounts
• If premiums are deducted from your super, you won’t be dipping into your take-home pay • There may also be tax benefits because you pay for cover out of your pretax super contributions • Your cover will often be automatically accepted, so there’s no need for medical examinations • If premiums are automatically deducted, your insurance may be easier to manage What are the downsides of insurance through super? • The types of insurance and level of cover may be limited • Paying insurance premiums via your super could decrease your super balance if your super is not being offset by contributions • If you have more than one super fund, you may be doubling up on insurance costs • All claimants and beneficiaries for life insurance claims need to be considered by the trustee, so you’ll need make sure your binding nominations are up to date • Payments may be de-
layed, as money is normally paid by the insurer to the super fund first • Tax may be payable on some benefits • Cover through super often ends when you reach a certain age (usually 65 or 70). What else should I think about? After considering the pros and cons of holding insurance inside super, you’ll need to determine the level of cover you need and remember to review your cover regularly, especially when your circumstances change. For more information, please contact us on 07 5447 7740.

He has brought with him not only all his experience but also the family business ethos of “good old fashioned service” and the business motto “ We service what we Sell” His Dad Brian, Brother Mark and Mother Maree all work in the business with Scott, which services residential and small acre-
age blocks in and around our towns with household, bore and pool pumps, as well as surrounding areas and farmland with irrigation systems, poly tanks up to 10 000 gallons, and windmills. Scott says one option a lot of his customers are taking up are the Solar pumps, and many are coming in to see the latest Aerating Dam pumps, which not only clean up dams for summer but get rid of weeds, making their dams ready to cool off in the hot summer months ahead. Scott says they basically
travel anywhere to install or service pumps, having come from Longreach where a 5 hour drive was just all in a day’s work. Maree says they are all very aware of the hassle and inconvenience a broken down pump can be, so they are always prompt and efficient, usually being able to offer same day service. The Rose family has been made welcome in Cooroy, and have made many friends in the year since moving to town, though like many who have moved near the coast thought they would have been to the beach a lot more than they have. If you haven’t met the Rose family yet, drop in to Cooroy Pumps and Solar at 7 Diamond St, Cooroy. The shop is well equipped with Poly (metric and rural), Camlock, Brass fittings. Various Pumps, Poly by the Roll or metre, Pool chemicals, salt and Chlorine, Filters and Filter Cartridges. Floats and Valves, Pressure switches and Press Controls as well as many other water related products. Call 5447 6832
Linedancers come together in Cooroy, for a third year of dancing and Fund Raising. Sunday 7th August saw 160 Line Dancers from all over South East Queensland attend Cooroy State School for their annual dance day. Dance groups from Gold Coast, Ipswich, Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Childers and all places in between come together to share their friendships, passion for dancing, and of course their generosity. The Groups all do their own little bit of fund Raising before coming to the event. But the dance day is the culmination of everybody efforts, and the result speaks for itself. This year Compass Institute Inc. was their chosen
Charity, and they were able to raise the fabulous total of $7210.45. “The Compass Institute is a Queensland based Charity dedicated to providing support for people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. In 2003 Compass opened a post-school dis-
ability service as part of a long held dream to dramatically change the philosophy of service provision from one of passive recreation and sheltered workshops to a pathway of further education; skills based training and vocational opportunities. The values and culture are cen-
tred on empowerment and inclusion, and the staff and young people have proven that anything is possible where there is vision, self belief and a strong work ethic.” The day is planned again for 2017, with the Charity for support yet to be decided.

THE Noosa District State High School trip to Japan this year would not be possible without the help of the Pomona Lions Club and the Cooroy RSL, with both organisations agreeing to subsidise the trip, which has increased by $2730 due to fluctuations in the exchange rate. The students involved in the trip raised over $300 in fundraising with sausage sizzle at the NDSHS Subject Expo. Lions and RSL are able to provide $1200 each, with the students promising to visit a war memorial in Japan as well as committing to help with a Lions event. Many of the students attending the Japanese trip are financially stretched to afford the trip. If local organisations, businesses or members of the community are able to provide additional financial assistance, please contact Humanities Head of Department Lisa Fowler via email: lfowl6@eq.edu.au or phone: 5472 2222.

The winning team from a rather difficult trivia session, compiled by Trevor Blake are all smiles. Back: Marlene Strudwick and Carol Blake; Front: John and Lyn Pluck and George Kootoofa THE Probus Club of Cooroy were at it again this week stretching their memory banks to find the answers to some rather difficult trivia questions compiled by quiz master, Trevor Blake. We all recognised the questions.....but some of us had difficulty recalling the answers! Our latest fun day, organised by Jeanette Kelly and Bob Lacey was enjoyed by all who attended.
The Probus club is always welcomes new members, retired business and professional people who enjoy a bit of fun and the company of like minded people. If interested, come along to one of our meetings held on the first Monday of each month in the Anglican Church hall, Miva Street, Cooroy or contact the membership officer, John Pluck ph 5485 0415.
THE last article I wrote was on the Queen of Orchids; this time it is the King of Orchids Dendrobium speciosum commonly known as the King Orchid. When this orchids starts to flower this heralds the beginning of spring. Because this orchid is an Australian native it is easily grown in our conditions as a landscaping plant in the garden or in a pot so as you can move the around and take them to shows. When growing them in pots you must change the potting media every couple of years to guarantee good drainage. To see more of these plants and a wide range of other exotic orchids come visit the club show being held in Cooroy at the CWA hall on the 16th and 17th September. There will be plants for sale to start a collection or to add to your collection. Admission is a mere $2. The Noosa Club meet on the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah hall starting at 1pm. All visitors are welcome. For more information contact John Green 54832764 or visit the club web site.

Have your say on the future of the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park THE community is invited to have their say as Sunshine Coast Council develops the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park Draft Master Plan. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the draft plan identified future requirements for facilities and infrastructure, and future management arrangements. “The draft plan aims to be consistent with community demand, whilst also protecting the environmental values of the site,” Cr McKay said. “The draft master plan ensures continued adherence with council endorsed strategies, all of which articulate the protection of the Park as a Motorcycle Precinct. The draft plan also upholds a key principle of ensuring continued and improved access for the community to the Park. “We want to ensure the draft master plan is realistic and considers the expectations and capacity of council and stakeholders.” Sport and leisure consultants Otium Planning Group have been engaged to assist council in undertaking this study. Cr McKay said there were several ways the community could engage directly with the consultants. “This will include a Meet us at the Park event on Saturday, September 17, feedback forms and a dedicated email address or phone number available to all community members,” Cr McKay said. “It is important to note council has not made a commitment to fund all recommendations from the draft master plan. Its implementation will require external funding assistance. Council is however of the view that this site has enormous potential so it is important that planning is undertaken in an orderly and consultative manner. “It is vital to have a well-researched plan in place to ensure council is aware of the needs of the community and is able to take advantage of funding opportunities as they arise. “This is an important project for the people of Condondale and the entire Sunshine Coast region and we look forward to hearing from residents.” Community feedback will continue throughout the draft master planning process and will close on Friday, September 23. Feedback received during the community consultation period will inform the final master plan which will then be presented to council for endorsement. Meet in the Park event Saturday, September 17, 10am-1pm Conondale Memorial Recreation Park, 1156 Maleny-Kenilworth Road, Elaman Creek (approximately 4.8km from the Conondale Township). The community can share their views on the project by contacting the consultants Otium Planning on email conondalereserve@otiumplanning.com.au or phone 07 3040 6658. Submissions close 5pm Friday, September 23. Visit council’s website for more information.

Appeal filed to protect Mary River amenity A GROUP opposing a piggery at Kybong has filed a Notice to Appeal in the Planning and Environment Court against the decision to approve intensive animal industries with conditions (up to 1000 standard pig units and 10,000 chickens) at 87 Mullaly Rd. Group Representative, Glenda Pickersgill said The area is substantially below the Q 100 flood level (the 107 Ha property has only 36 Ha above the Q 100 flood line). “There is little evidence that the proposed development will not adversely impact on the water quality of the river. We are concerned about the effect of nutrient and sediment on the Mary River after intense rains and during flooding,” said Ms Pickersgill. “Pigs can quickly remove vegetation and disrupt the soil. In most rotational outdoor piggeries, nutrients accumulate very quickly in the soil which lead to nutrient imbalances or excesses that can leave the
site”. “The development is across the river from Rural Residential properties with the closest house only 190m to the pigs. Similarly there is little evidence that there will not be adverse impact upon community amenity.” “We believe a proposal of this kind has merits but it is still an experiment.” “It needs to be relocated to an area that does not flood, presents low risk of environmental harm to a watercourse/water supply and has adequate buffers from neighbours for odour, noise, health and other amenity issues.” she said. This includes Environmentally Relevant Activities (ERA 3 –Pig Keeping 1,000 SPU and Poultry Farming 10,000 Chickens). The development was assessed by Gympie Regional Council under the provisions of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009.
Ridgewood local celebrates a second chance at life WHOEVER thought the number 7 could be so important? Ridgewood local celebrates a second chance at life at the Australian Transplant Games Ridgewood resident Natalie Regan is gearing up to celebrate the greatest gift of all by participating in next month’s Australian Transplant Games. Natalie, 49, received a live-saving liver transplant in 2009 at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and now she is ready to compete in Australia’s most inspirational sporting event. Transplant Australia will stage the Australian Transplant Games from 24 September to 1 October in Western Sydney to promote the benefits of donation and transplantation, and help transplant recipients strive towards improved health and fitness. Western Sydney has been chosen as the location for the upcoming Transplant Games to promote of organ donation to Australia’s multicultural communities. Transplant Australia will highlight the very real benefits of transplantation by forming a human image of the total number of years of extra life enjoyed by the recipients at the games. This will take place in Sydney’s Martin Place on Monday, September 26 at 11.00am. Natalie will be adding seven years to what will be an extraordinary total and she will be presented with this personalised shirt at the start of the games. She is competing in dragon boat race, swimming and athletics. The Transplant Games unite those
touched by transplantation and organ donation through an exciting week of sport and social activities. Transplant Australia CEO, Chris Thomas, describes the Games. “For recipients, participation is a way of saying ‘thanks’ to their donor families; for donor families, it’s a way to honour their loved one’s gift of life. Transplant recipients come from all over the country to take part. “Our athletes demonstrate living proof that transplantation saves lives. What’s more, it allows them a quality of life they might not have experienced for years. They can start a family, play sport, get back into the workforce – all because of the generosity of someone else,” Mr Thomas said. The message to all Australians from the staging of these Games is to register as an organ and tissue donor. “For every Australian willing to one day save lives, joining the register is the clearest message a person can give their family that, in the event of their death, they have made a decision to leave a legacy of donation to save the lives of other Australians,” Mr Thomas said. Join the Australian Organ Donor Register online by visiting donatelife.gov.au About the Australian Transplant Games The Australian Transplant Games are held every two years and celebrate the success of transplantation and encourage Australian families to discuss organ and tissue donation. They are open to transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, people on dialysis or awaiting a transplant and supporters.

Pomona Railway Station Gallery is proud to present new ceramic works from Wendy Britton and Gail Grossman in their latest exhibition “FROM THE STUDIO’S”. Wendy has made the transition from resort cleaner to full time ceramicist, after starting as a hobby in 2003 she completed her Diploma in Fine Arts/Ceramics at Tafe in 2009. Since taking her first steps with market stalls which gave her the confidence to approach retail outlets on the Sunshine Coast, Wendy now supplies her gift ware range here and interstate. Business is growing, branching out into tableware for several local restaurants and cafes as well as corporate gifts. The gift ware business allows Wendy to follow the creative side of her art practice by creating one off sculptural forms for both garden and home. Gail started her ceramic journey in western Queensland where she was a primary school teacher she now works part time in her
Wendy Britton and Gail Grossman family business but looks forward to spending more time on her art. A trip to Africa has
influenced Gail in her work both sculptural and figurative. The exhibition runs until October 12th.

COOROY RAG
AFTER two years of producing the groundbreaking Dreaming BIG concert series in the tiny township of Eudlo, Louise King, a musician quoted by The Australian as ‘exuding a vigorous artistry’ is embarking on a regional tour including a performance at the Cooran Hall on September 3 at 3pm.
Cello Dreaming celebrates the music, life and legacy of baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach featuring solo cello music with sparkling harpsichord performed with guest international artist Huguette Brassine. The program features suites for solo cello, a viola da gamba sonata plus well-known works such as Arioso, Air, Gavotte and Bourrée from Bach’s D major orchestral suite. Across the globe, audiences flock to experience the intimacy and meditative power of Bach’s music. Artists paint to his music, dancers move, poets write, and now you can experience what it is about his music that still endures and captures the imagination hundreds of years since creation. Louise King explains why this may be so. “Bach’s music is complex, rich in invention and polyphony. You hear in colour with a myriad of voices to explore. The baroque dance feel is so present and euphoric. It is like stepping back in time. Bach’s music is for the head, heart and soul.” If you rarely have the opportunity to experience classical music in concert, you are in for a rare treat as cellist Louise King is widely known for her virtuosity and refinement and breaks down the barriers of listening to classical music with an easygoing stage presence. Louise King says, “I am
passionate about presenting classical music experiences in small communities and finding new innovative ways to open up music for people. I think that having more access to quality live performing art experiences regardless of where you live really matters to social health, as it brings people together across the generations and social demographic to experience something together.” Limited tickets are available so book today to reserve your seat. Book online www.cellodreaming.com.au or phone 0415128799. Tickets $20-$40 concession, early bird & group discounts available, children under 12 free.

Grow your way to good health
HIGH in flavonoids, blueberries are well established as a health booster. The anthocyanin content helps to give its distinctive colour. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says Bilberries are a close relative of the blueberry, but they are not as well known. ‘They are often used in Herbal Medicine to improve eye and blood vessel heath, reduce eye strain, glaucoma, varicose veins & haemorrhoids. They also slow mental ageing’. Jodie says it is the unique compounds (including anthocyanins)
which give Bilberries their therapeutic effects. While these are magic berries, they can be expensive. This is a good reason to try growing some, and it’s easier that you may think. Bilberries only grow in cold climates, so a herbal tincture is the best option to gain health benefits. Blueberries on the other hand are well suited to the Australian climate. Jodie says you only need one or two healthy plants to get a good crop, and they can be grown in either a pot or the ground. In warmer
climates, it’s possible to harvest blueberries from June to December (depending on plant variety). You can grow one in a large pot with some potting mix (designed for acidic soil loving plants). You will also need some bird netting to throw over when it starts fruiting. If you go for more than one plant, make the companion a different variety that is a beneficial pollinator and you will get larger crops! Blueberries are one of those rare foods that have both good taste and nutrition, and it doesn’t take much effort to have a fresh supply in a spare corner of your garden or patio. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. Let’s get happy and healthy! The sun is a-shining, the birds are a-singing....but you’re just not feelin’ it … we live such hectic lives, that we sometimes forget to look after ourselves. So you decide to improve your diet and exercise more but every time you try to get out and active, you struggle to breathe, you cough, you wheeze … maybe it’s also time to give up those nasty cigarettes. People smoke because the nicotine in tobacco is very addictive! However as we all know, continual exposure to all of the other chemicals in the tobacco smoke can lead to many other serious health conditions. If you’re a heavy smoker or have been smoking for a long time, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a good option to consider. Clinical trials show it may increase your chances of quitting by 50-70% compared to unassisted quitting - well worth a try. So why should I use NRT? What makes it any better than smoking a cigarette?!! And isn’t it better to just quit “cold turkey?” The main benefit of NRT is that it prevents cravings in a smoker whilst allowing them to abstain from tobacco; therefore you will not be inhaling all of the poisonous gases and chemicals that are usually found in nasty cigarette smoke!! You will be using a product far less addictive than cigarettes, as less nicotine is absorbed into your body at a slower rate than with smoking! You will be able to reduce your body’s daily intake of nicotine gradually, by reducing the NRT dose over several months! Your withdrawal from nicotine will be reduced, making it much easier to quit than just simply going “cold turkey!” Quitting smoking is such a personal thing, so it is important for you to feel comfortable in how you go about this life-changing process. 3 of the most common methods for quitting using NRT include: stopping smoking abruptly and using 1 form of NRT to control cravings; stopping smoking abruptly and use a combination of 2 NRT products (patches plus gum, spray or lozenges) to control cravings; stopping smoking gradually by using 1 form of NRT to
help REDUCE the number of cigarettes smoked daily whilst preparing to quit. Your LiveLife pharmacist can help to advise you on what method may work in your personal situation. But it’s important to think holistically about your lifestyle when choosing to give up cigarettes. You will need to support your body through this process, so remember: Try to fit in a moderate amount of exercise in your week (30 minutes on all/most days of the week); Eat regular healthy meals, making sure you include plenty of fruit, vegetables and grains; Try to limit foods high in fat, sugar or salt; Limit your alcohol intake¯it is important not to replace your smoking with drinking; Join a support group to help enable you to overcome the emotional and psychological dependence on smoking. Quitline is a telephone service available to smokers who want to quit. You can call Quitline on 137848 from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call (except for mobile phones¯normal charges apply). Try to keep positive and motivated about quitting. You may attempt to quit a number of times before you stop for good, and that is ok. Try to think of previous attempts to quit as practise. Learn from past attempts – think about what worked for you and put that into practise during THIS next attempt. Also think about what might have brought you back to smoking again and how you might deal with this next time. Switching to “lighter”/”weaker” cigarettes and using filters does not necessarily make cigarettes any less dangerous for the body. Remember that your quitting success rate may improve by avoiding situations which tempt you to smoke; e.g. Being with friends who smoke, being in a stressful/frustrating situation, drinking alcohol, or at coffee breaks. If NRT is not working for you, please talk to your LiveLife pharmacist¯they will ensure the treatment regimen is being followed correctly and is most appropriate for YOU. They can also advise on other prescription/ non-prescription methods for quitting. Get happy and HEALTHY this Summer - Life; let us help you LIVE it!

SKIN CARE PRODUCTS FOR MEN
POMONA’S newest hair salon, Scissors Rocks Hair, is delighted with the response they have received from their clients since opening last month. Owner, Rachael Stevens, has been in the industry for 30 years working in Sydney, Europe and now Pomona gets the benefit of her extensive experience. Rachael, along with her enthusiastic team consisting of senior stylists Mare Young and Jessica McFarlane and apprentice Tania Clem (who is also a qualified beautician), have created a fun, friendly, professional vibe in the salon. “I feel so proud of Scissors Rocks Hair,” says Rachael. “Our aim is to do good hair at affordable prices in a cool environment. We want to cater for all walks of life,” she said. “We think about the products we use with both Eleven and Evervescents
being Australian made. Our colour and product range are produced with sustainability being its key focus. Scissors Rocks Hair also offers spray tanning with a convenient kids cubby corner for busy mums. The salon also houses Tinkabelle Beauty operated by Alana (Tink) Walker, offering advanced skin care, facial treatments, microdermabrasion, skin needling and anti-aging skin care products. Tink says it has been her dream since she used her first moisturiser and cleaner. She has worked in the beauty industry for the past 14 years at large day spas and small private salons. “I have been using Environ Skin Care since 2003 and have introduced the products to several salons I have worked in … because it works,” says

Tink. “I have used many different product ranges and have loved the smells, the packaging and the luxury. They hydrate your skin but they do not change it. When you use Environ products you see real results in a very short period of time. The results on sun damaged skin, lines, redness are visible. Switch on to the Bowen technique After being a Bowen therapist for 20 years Virginia Bowen Porteous is very passionate about what this amazing non-invasive, all-embracing technique achieves. “It is vitally important and uplifting for human health. It switches people on physically, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually, which in turn activates & energising them,” says Virginia. This seemingly gentle work, which does not require the client to disrobe, has essential pauses between each series of moves rolling over connective and muscle tissue. It adjusts, balances and improves the body, both structurally and functionally, utilizing the comprehensive complex mechanisms of the body and its subtle energies. “About 8 months ago, due to my nursing background, one of the Sunshine Coast Bowen Instructors referred a client who has a connective tissue disease known
as EDS “Ehlers -Danlos syndrome” which affects primarily your skin, joints & blood vessel walls. She was in severe pain due to her joints dislocating which is part and parcel of this disease. With the initial session we had her out of pain but after 3 treatments her body was totally back in alignment. In my years of experience, I believe it takes the body that long for to fully recover. “To both of our delights she has not had to revisit the hospital for pain administration which would involve heavy drugs occurring about every 2 weeks or go to her doctor which was previously a weekly visit. You can read her testimonial on my web site www.virginiabowen.com.au Virginia is attending Bowen Treatments at the Cooroora Family Health Centre on Saturdays (5485 1321 or her mobile 0410 472177 for other appointment times.

Lakeridge has a team of extremely qualified and professional staff to look after all your health and beauty needs. Carly Brady has a Diploma of beauty therapy, including nutrition, is trained in IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and an Advanced Diploma in Ayurveda (including herbalism). “My passion is to help women to find balance, to nurture and care for them when they are stressed. I absolutely love massage and have learnt many types of massage therapy over my 14 years of hands on work. I intuitively tailor every massage to the individual, each time they come in. “I have regular clients who have come to see me as they know they get the best care and attention every time. “Having studied Ayurveda, my massage incorporates marma point therapy which greatly aids the body in detoxifying, healing and releasing stress and tension from not only the body, but the mind as well,” says Carly. Lisa Lister has been working at Lakeridge Health, Beauty and Skin Care for three years and now employs two Beauty Therapists. “Bowen Therapy is my passion as I have seen such great results from the treatment and I also experienced Bowen after injuring myself in my 20s after I fell from a horse so I knew how powerful it was,” says Lisa. “Some people who visit relatives in Cooroy but live in Sydney or Melbourne will also attend the Clinic every year when they come back for holidays as they appreciate the care and attention that is given with every treatment”. Hiedi Knight is excited to be part of the professional team as Lakeridge. With over 20 years’ experience in skin and beauty she makes sure she stays up to date on the latest trends, techniques and products. “My passion is providing the best skin care treatments to address my clients’ issues and receive great pleasure in getting actual real results! 3 1 bed 2 bath 2.4 acres Price: Offers over $399,000. Hidden away amidst mature trees on a private 1 hectare block, this is one of the most charming and unique properties on the market today. Currently home to an artist, this original Queenslander offers the charm and craftsmanship of yesteryear, yet is just 10 minutes from schools, shops and services in Pomona, and 30 minutes from the Noosa beaches. This rustic hideaway is packed with potential, as a country residence, holiday home or even a nice littler earner, as an Airbnb. Believed to be an old school house, the main residence is a delight, with high vaulted ceilings, polished hardwood floors throughout and wide wraparound verandahs on three sides. Original French doors open off the open plan living area to the verandahs, while the kitchen features handcrafted hardwood cupboards and drawers. One wing of the home features a large, open plan master bedroom and office, with a craftsman-built ensuite. Accessed from the living area, an additional mezzanine loft space could be used as an office, library or store room. Across from the main house, via a covered walkway, is the most gorgeous building, which could be used as guest accommodation, an artist’s retreat, or for Airbnb. This Council-approved building features an upstairs bedroom/studio with a balcony - accessed via a spiral staircase - with a functioning bathroom and laundry downstairs.
Again, beautiful hardwood timber plays a major role here, and many more quirky, original features can be found throughout the buildings and gardens. Away from the main buildings is a 44ft shipping container, with two large side doors, currently used as a studio by the owner, a local ceramic artist and potter. Set back from the road for privacy, this is a wonderful 2.4 acre property, featuring sweeping lawns and established trees, including a beautiful silky oak, Norfolk pine and a couple of big fig trees. There are plenty of shady places to hide away with a good book, perhaps down by the heart-shaped dam, with its friendly resident turtle! There’s wildlife aplenty here, including wallabies, kookaburras and goannas, with room for a veggie garden, chooks, sheds, a pool or a pony if desired. There’s a workshop and plenty of storage under the main house, as well as a garden shed. 10 minutes from Pomona, the property is also just 15 minutes from Tewantin, and 8 minutes from Lake Cootharaba and the famous Apollonian Hotel! Without spoiling the original rustic charm of this rare, very liveable property, the owner has made some excellent improvements, including new gutters, a new rainwater tank, new pump and a new power board. Now it’s up to you to add your personal touches and make this your dream property, in a highly sought-after location. Impact boxers make a clean sweep
THE Impact Boxing Academy had a clean sweep when they competed at the recent Wide Bay Titles in Bundaberg. The team had 7 fights with 7 wins, all claiming the Title in their respective weight divisions. A fantastic result for the club! These titles attract boxers from all over Queensland & is one of the major competitions of the year. The winners were Brock Shelley 91kg, Luke Martin 60kg, Ella Boot 60kg female youth, Sam Cameron-Hands 60kg male youth, Ben CameronHands 54kg, Coen Allman 42kg & Kayden Mercieca 36kg. “ I am super proud of these kids as always. They continue to raise the bar each time they enter the ring. Each one of them has earnt their win tonight as they all had to push themselves against skilled opponents to get the win. Our little gym in Cooroy now boast more combined title holders than any other gym in Australia!! The Impact crew will now focus on the upcoming National Golden Gloves where we will have 12 fighters competing over four days of competition.

Season to an end but not without a fight
NOW IS THE TIME TO SIGN UP!!!
COOROY-EUMUNDI CRICKET CLUB
THE 2016/17 CRICKET SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING Sign on at Training between 4-5.30pm AS the season has come to an end, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who have been part of or contributed to the Cutters club. We have said it before and will say it again, this amazing Club thanks you from the bottom of our heart for your tremendous support throughout the year. The Cutters Club is made of people from all different avenues, starting with the Committee, Players/Coach to Sponsors, Volunteers and Spectators and without you all, we wouldn’t be as successful as we are today. Everyone shares a role here at the club, which is just as important as the next. We are very lucky that it is not just the same handful of people week after week that help out in some way. 3 cheers to you all. Unfortunately, the Cutters are out of the finals but not without a fight. We made it to the 2nd round but Mary Valley defeated us which sadly takes us out of the comp. The last 2 weeks have been a little nerve racking and we are very proud of the players who gave it their 110% effort. Congrats to Nugget, Phil and Mark W who received the 3-2-1 in the first final and Mark W, Phil and Jake S who were awarded the 3-2-1 in the second Final. Well done to you all. From the Coach, Clinton Lewis. “Wow, what a year! It was fantastic to see so many new faces and so many young talented players coming into the Club. Joining forces with these new players, running alongside some of our experienced team. will be a year of many highlights for 2017 with so many great achievements to see. Thanks to all my team, managers, strappers and water runners who have been with me throughout this season, it is very much appreciated. Also a big thanks goes out to all the supporters that have followed us throughout the year.”
