Historic Bonnell Brothers changes hands

Bonnell Brothers Landscaping Supplies has been owned by the family since it was established in 1933, originally carting timber and cream before growing and evolving into the all-round landscaping business it is today. But after deciding on retirement, Dennis and Lester and their wives Lynn and Beth have sold the business to James and Siona Howard. Pictured at the back are Dennis, Lester, Lynn and Beth Bonnell and long term employee Larry Coxon. At the front are new owners Siona and James and Siona with their children Annabelle and Maggie and Jenny Rhule who will be working in the office. (SEE STORY PAGE 2)

COOROY Locals, Dennis and Lester, along with their wives Lynn and Beth, are handing over the reins of their Bonnell Brothers business of 21 years to new owners James and Siona Howard. Dennis and Lester bought the business from their parents Selwyn and Joyce Bonnell in 1995. Selwyn and Joyce had the business from 1969 and before that Selwyn’s Father, Arthur had it. It was originally established in 1933 carting timber and cream. The business used to run from town. As the business grew, The Bonnells moved it to the current Mary River Road property and began operating from there in 1998. The business currently supplies and delivers varieties of landscaping materials including different grades of gravels,

soils, mulches and sands. They also do truck hire, water deliveries and machinery floating. New owners, James and Siona Howard, took over the business on 1st August and know that they have very big, well respected and knowledgeable shoes to fill. The business will also have a name change – Cooroy Landscape Supplies. James has had 20 years’ experience in the earthmoving, transport and quarry industry and Siona has had many years’ experience in administration, operations and book keeping. Before moving to Cooroy with their 2 daughters 5 years ago, James and Siona successfully owned and operated an earthmoving, landscaping and slashing contracting business together. They are looking forward to working as a team again and contributing to the great community of Cooroy.

Letter to the editor ON 22nd July my wife and I attended the public meeting at the Cooroy Library called by the Cooroy Community Memorial Hall Action Group to discuss the current situation and to consider possible means of expediting action to re-open the facility. The meeting was attended by a gathering of approximately 50 persons comprising representatives of the Action Committee, the Cooroy RSL, the Noosa Shire Council and non-aligned members of the community such as ourselves. Mr Harry Kirk (Action Group), Mr Bruce Gregory (Cooroy RSL) and Mr Allan Rogers (Noosa Shire Council) addressed the meeting providing a summary of relevant matters surrounding the Hall closure and circumstances frustrating an up-grade and re-opening. It was a disappointing, in my view that the Council, not only the local authority, but a part owner of the land on which the hall stands entrusted their role in proceedings to Mr Rogers, a Council employee rather than an elected member. The Mayor, Mr Wellington sent his apology whilst Deputy Mayor Mr Frank Wilkie could not attend as he was ‘treading the boards’ as a local thespian. Other Council representatives were newly elected Councillor Ingrid Jackson who spent a great deal of time taking notes and Councillor Brian Stockwell. The Council CEO, Mr De Chastel did not to attend nor did our local state member Mr Peter Wellington. Mr Rogers, Council’s only speaker gave a brief outline of the land on which the hall stands and emphasised difficulties with the old land title deed and current negotiations with the State Government land authority, DNRM. It seems that Council wants title to some land owned by DNRM behind the hall and DNRM want Council to become trustees of the hall. In the meantime as Mr Rogers advised, the issue is at ‘stalemate’ and may not be resolved for some years. In the interim whilst politicians and bureaucrats debate and haggle over the issue, the old hall stands in a forlorn state in slow but certain structural decay. It is indeed ironic that despite 100 years since the war, remains of our fallen Soldiers keep being found in the Somme valley. The unknown Australian soldiers are then treated with admirable dignity and honour, yet we allow a WW1 relic of substantial significance to suffer the indignity of pitiful and ongoing human neglect. Local people will rightly condemn government

of all levels for showing such little regard over the years for one of the Shire’s oldest and most precious heritage buildings particularly this year, 90 long years past its birth date and during the ongoing World War One centenary. Council would, no doubt argue that the RSL is to blame, and that would be grossly unfair and far from the truth. The fact is that the RSL has struggled for many decades to keep the hall open despite having meagre financial resources to do so. It should be well understood that Councils throughout Australia have taken responsibility for heritage style buildings in their respective areas, so the time has come for the Noosa Council to show leadership and accept the responsibility for this very unique and much loved structure. My view is simple, form a further delegation comprising Community, RSL and Council representatives to the State Government to exert maximum pressure upon the responsible Departmental Minister and Director to expedite necessary amendments to the land title allowing Council in conjunction with a community sub-committee to fund raise and re-develop the site to refurbish the old hall and construct commercial floor-space as part of the complex thus providing a strong and secure income stream needed to ensure maintenance of the Hall into the future. This matter requires a passionate and robust community involvement similar to that wonderful effort made in the 1920’s to build the hall. We owe that to our forebears and future generations. LEST WE FORGET Chris Simpson

Councillors Frank Wilkie, Joe Jurisevic and Ingrid Jackson and members of the community met in Cooroy recently to discuss hinterland issues including the Cooroy RV Stopover, the Gumtree Rd Bridge, the Cooroy Hall, the Myall Street intersection, the Maple Street pedestrian crossing and hinterland roads. Run, Santa, RUN!!! ASK anyone you meet who the world’s fastest man is and you’ll always get the same answer: Santa Claus. He can make it around the world, stopping at every child’s home in one single night. There’s no disputing that Santa is quickest as evidenced by the Great Santa Race held in Cooroy every December as part of the annual Christmas in Cooroy festivities! The instructions are simple, dress up like the Big Man in Red and make a dash up Maple Street for your chance to win great cash prizes and raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, the prizes for the Great Santa Race are $750 each for first male and first female, $250 for

second and $150 for third plus five $100 random draws just for participating! “This is the eighth year that we have had the madcap excitement of the Great Santa Race as a part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. We’ve had over 50 Santas compete in the last couple of years but it would be great if we could double those numbers and get 100 Santas streaking their way up Maple Street. There are over 10,000 people in the crowd cheering them on so it is all quite exciting. The more Santas that run, the more funds that are raised for the Leukaemia Foundation,” said Danielle Taylor, Event Manager. The Great Santa Race will start from Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 3 December. Entry to the Great

Santa Race is only $10 and all entrants receive a free Santa suit to race in. Proceeds of the race are donated to Leukaemia Foundation. Participants must be 18 years and over and entries can be obtained online at www.christmasincooroy. com.au under the competitions tab. Ensure you enter early to secure a spot at the starting line. The Great Santa Race is a component of Christmas in Cooroy which is a fantastic free

community event with free rides and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy this event is a showcase of Christmas spirit for the region. The race will precede the popular Bendigo Bank Street Parade which then leads into the remainder of the evening festivities. Christmas in Cooroy could not be run as a free event without the

fantastic support from all its volunteers and funding partners: Ri-con Contractors, Noosa Council, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Cooroy Rag Community Newspaper, Cooroy Supa IGA, Madills Motor Group, Cooroy Hotel, CJ Taxation Services, Gelignite Jacks, Cooroy Fish n Chips, Live Life Pharmacy and Firefly Solutions.

Hospice still hopeful of government support SUNSHINE Hospice Ltd has a long term lease at the Doonan site where it has operated the Hospice since March 2011. The Sunshine Hospice Ltd Board has no intention at this stage of vacating this site but is reviewing all Government regulations that need to be met in order to get Government financial support for our hospice. Negotiations with government do not happen quickly and the community must understand that the Board is required to act within the regulations of company law and best practice. The Sunshine Hospice Ltd Board steadfastly maintains its intention to reopen the Sunshine Hospice with the support of the WHOLE of the Sunshine Coast Community. This will be achieved when sufficient funds are available to allow a continuous service to

those in our community who require a hospice health facility. The Board is vitally aware that the hospice’s reputation for care and service has been built by the dedication of both nursing staff and volunteers not only in our shops but also by gardening clubs who maintain the magnificent grounds. It is not in anyone’s interest to damage that reputation. This dedicated group of over 200 volunteers are currently supporting the wide range of activities of the hospice through fund raising activities and the operation of the five Opportunity Shops on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland All other hospices in Queensland have private hospital licences and get State Government support along with Medicare, DVA and Private Health insurance contributions where that

is possible. These hospices operate in a similar manner to the Sunshine Hospice at Doonan and provide exactly the same home like care to patients. The Hospice (in the period since March 2011) has supported over 300 families and their loved ones at the most stressful time in a family’s life. The Board has established from the operation of the Hospice at Doonan that to provide the quality of care that patients need 24/7, care by paid registered nurses and support staff along with a large group of volunteers, is the only sustainable way for the hospice to operate and this has been the case since 2011. To ensure regular income Sunshine Hospice Ltd needs to continue operating our opportunity shops. Donations are very important to the Hospice’s continued operations but by their very nature are irregular so a

more reliable and dependable income is needed. The current difficult environment for donations, means that we need the community to continue to support the hospice both financially and with donations to our shops so that the hospice can re open. Fund raising for the Hospice continues and is slowly rebuilding our reserves towards the ultimate aim of reopening. Recent fund raising events include a music concert, MG rally, support at the Nambour garden show, locals selling produce and jams as well as the ongoing operations of the Opportunity Shops. We have recently received significant donations from service clubs and a private charitable foundation to go towards the reopening of the Hospice. These Clubs understand that it is important to assist funding the

hospice’s ongoing costs while negotiations are being held with government and other allied health organisations. In the meantime, the Board has conducted a substantial audit of hospice operations and what is required to be instituted in order to receive government support including Medicare funding, Veteran Affairs and Private Health Funds where possible. In all of these deliberations the Board has not lost sight of re opening the hospice. From this process it has identified what funds are specifically required to re-open and continue operations in perpetuity and a complete business plan will be available in August – something required by government and other health providers before negotiations can be undertaken to put the hospice on a sound and long term financial basis.

Grants information hub online COMMUNITY groups can visit Council’s webpage for helpful advice about securing grant funding and assistance. www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ more-grants-guidance includes links to a range of grant funding programs, as well as presentations from last week’s popular Grants, Network and Nibbles night. More than 130 people attended the event, which Council hosted to connect community groups with grant funding providers. “Feedback from community group representatives who came along has been overwhelmingly positive. With the presentations from each of the funding providers now online, other com-

munity groups too can access the wealth of advice provided,” Community Development Coordinator Alison Hamblin said. Ms Hamblin said Council was considering hosting further Grants, Network and Nibbles nights, given the event’s popularity. “Because there were so many presenters, and they only had five minutes each, we all learned quickly and easily what they can do for the community,” she said. “We even had a big giggle at a couple of presenters; it was a really fun night.” Council’s grants webpage includes information from organisations such as the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing,

Speakers at the recent community grants networking night June Canavan Foundation, Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Unitywater, Cooroy Rag, Noosa FM, and the University of the

Sunshine Coast. “It’s also the place to go for grant writing tips as well as information on Noosa Council’s own grants pro-

grams,” Ms Hamblin said. V i s i t www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ more-grants-guidance for more information.

Cooroy Camphor Laurel call for more members THE Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative Inc. (SCCLTI) has been serving its many customers for over eleven years now, and has recently implemented a number of changes to better reflect its standing in today’s vibrant Cooroy community. They have registered a new, simpler trading name, Cooroy Camphor Laurel. Staffed entirely by local volunteers, this not-forprofit group, located in the big colorbond shed in Lower Mill Road, Cooroy, has the support of Noosa Council in their endeavours to create value added timber products out of camphor laurel timber , a declared weed primarily sourced from the local community. It remains an interesting operations management task to fell a camphor tree, transport it to their log yard, process it on their hydraulic bandsaw mill, and then having to wait several years for the green timber to lose sufficient moisture so they can begin making the many and varied cam-

phor laurel products that customers are attracted to. All timber and product sale proceeds are retained by the group and spent in local community businesses on services and products to keep the group functioning, and they are very proud of the fact that no member receives any paid benefit from the process! The group focus is on the removal and processing of camphor laurel timber in Noosa Shire, however, occasionally they diversify with timber selection and one such occasion was several months ago. They received a call from a local Cooroy identity, who had a large 12 metre hoop pine tree on the ground. Who knows what specific products will be made from this timber in 1 – 2 year’s time! Of course, the group greatly appreciates local landholders’ offering their camphor laurel timber and please contact them if you too have some to donate, and preferably any logs or trees greater than 300mm in diameter, so they can be

processed safely on the bandsaw mill. Given the success of Cooroy Camphor Laurel, and a full forward order book at this time, plus the recent installation of some new woodworking machinery, they hope to also soon undertake a 50 square metre expansion of their shed facility. Cooroy Camphor Laurel has a growing customer base and the group has recently been inundated with bespoke timber product orders! In addition to specific customer drop-in orders, a wide variety of stock timber products are sold at the group’s shed, in the Cooroy library and also at a number of annual markets in SE Qld that the group chooses to attend. With the proposed floorspace expansion, they are now actively seeking additional new members to join the team of volunteers. Maybe you have recently arrived in the Cooroy area and have some time available each month to put your hand toward milling or

Cooroy Camphor Laurel President Stuart Campbell woodworking with this wonderful product? You might also have painting/ timber finishing skills, administration, marketing , IT, OH & S, machinery maintenance knowledge etc, all of which they would welcome. It only costs a one-off $50 to join with no annual fee, and you may just surprise yourself with hidden woodworking talents that you unleash! The shed is open every weekday morning be-

tween 7.30 and 12.30 for you to have a chat, and see the volunteers in action. You and/or your partner can also browse the retail shop on site to pick up a camphor laurel bargain or souvenir. Parking is always available at the shed door too. The President, Stuart Campbell, foreman Bruce Cabot, and other members can be contacted on the shed number 0435 481 108, or email scclti@outlook.com

COOROY RAG Letter to the editor

Here’s hoping They say a good Government is a bad Government that’s had a nasty fright, And looking at the last election, that could be exactly right. So much promising, so much talking, the public are thoroughly fed up, Long weeks of pointless publicity without any sort of let up. The wheeling and dealing, the personal slanging, will doubtless carry on as usual, When will they settle down and do something really dutiful? It seems no one is running the country, that’s been the case for weeks, Where is the Government, what is it doing, who’s producing the traditional leaks? Australia deserves a proper Government, one strong and visibly fair. What has happened to society, does anyone really care? The politicians are filled with self-interest, with winning the next elections, Protecting their lovely perks, keeping their lovely pensions. Don’t we care about our future, our children, anymore? What kind of future are our loved ones heading for? We live in a wonderful country, don’t ever lose sight of that, It would be a pity to see it ruined by some thoughtless Parliament, or bureaucrat. We’ll give the new people a go, see how it all works out, Everyone will be on a learning curve, I can only say – Watch Out! Old age means that forever is longer than it used to be!

Tribute to happy Rex “King of the Court” our little sturdy wiry terrier, visiting each of us in our times of joy, the birth of a new baby, sadness, the loss of elderly parents, in sickness, recovery after stays in hospital and in health. Just his fleeting visit or his resting longer on our laps for a comforting cuddle – for us just as much as for himself. His heart was larger than his bushy eyebrows, and for a rescue dog with a crap start in life that was initially a big ask. But he overcame his fears and gave himself to all of us who live at the “top of the court”. Our neighbours’ little dog met a traumatic end on Sunday night – the brunt of a terrorist attack by two savaging dogs. What chance did Rex have, legally

tethered to his lead on his regular nightly walk? Rex, you have not left us without instilling a determined effort by all eight families at the top of the court to get certain laws on dog ownership revised. Rex, sixteen hearts in your home territory bleed just as you bled to death on Sunday night. Rex, we are ever so grateful that you touched our lives, and left your happy self buoyant in our hearts, something which we can take with us into the aged care homes to speak of you with giggling warmth. Rex, thank you from us here in Fantail. Pip Jacobson, Cooroy

Does your home loan measure up? Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy DO you want a home loan with more of the features you need? Are you interested in borrowing additional funds to renovate or invest? Do you want to move to a lower overall interest rate and fee structure? Your local bank can help you assess whether your home loan measures up, examine your current interest rate, monthly fees and any hidden costs. This can then help determine whether your home loan delivers the kind of rewards it should. Chances are your existing home loan could do with an overhaul. It’s a good idea to check to see if your bank is looking after you. With a choice of variable and fixed interest home loans at highly competitive rates, a line of credit loan or even a greener option, there’s bound to be a home loan that suits your needs. So before looking into a new home loan or even refinancing the one you presently have, there are

a few questions to ask: • Does your home loan offer fee free accounts? • Do they offer a discounted interest rate for having all your banking with them? • What about offset accounts, can you have the option of a full or partial offset? What about fees on this offset account? • Can you have flexibility in extra payments on your loan? • What about a redraw option, can you access these funds already paid in advance on your loan? • Does your bank have a local manager there to approve your loan on the

spot? • Will they be there to assist you after the loan has been completed? It’s all about getting the right loan for you. Remember it only takes a short time to get a loan approved, but takes a long time to pay it off, so you need to have a good relationship with your bank and make sure you actually have one with your bank manager - and that’s where your Cooroy Community Bank branch comes in. If you would like to see if your loan measures up, contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

How can delayed gratification help you with your finances? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* THE benefits of delayed gratification and how it can help you achieve your financial goals. Are you the type of person who always has to have the latest clothes, smart technology or gym gear? If you answered yes to this question, you could be a person who likes instant gratification, that is, you like to indulge in instant reward now, rather than exercising self-control, in return for a potentially greater reward in the future. The “marshmallow test” Instant gratification was first explored about 40 years ago by psychologist, Walter Mischel, in what has become known as the ‘marshmallow test’. This experiment tested children’s ability, or inability, to curb their urge to have one marshmallow immediately (instant gratification) rather than wait and receive two marshmallows, as promised to them, at a later time

(delayed gratification). This test still seems relevant today, so it’s not surprising that many of us choose to eat our marshmallow now, rather than wait, and possibly get a bigger reward at a later date. In today’s materialistic, throwaway society, we’ve been bombarded with messages convincing that instant gratification makes us feel better. Combine that with the pace of modern life giving us easy access to credit and rapid changes in technology, instant gratification is tempting us all. But while instant gratification might make us feel good for a while, it may not help us achieve our longer term goals. Delayed gratification has its own rewards Delayed gratification, by exercising self-control, allows you to resist the urge to have an instant reward now with the aim of a better reward down the track. For example, you could

give up your daily coffee and put the money aside to save for your next holiday, go without sugary treats to help you lose weight, or contribute to your super to help you save for a comfortable retirement. And while exercising self-control isn’t easy, resisting temptation can have its own rewards, such as imagining how you can indulge yourself once you’ve finally achieved your goal! How to use delayed gratification to help with your finances The next time you want to impulse-buy online or at the checkout, pause and think about whether you really need to spend the money now. Divert your impulse and think about what you could do with the money instead. Some ways you could use delayed gratification to help achieve your longer term goals: • Save up enough money before making a purchase to avoid credit card debt, a pay day or a

personal loan. When you do run up a debt, make sure you can afford to pay it off when the bill comes in or try to pay it off as soon as possible. • If you invest in a term deposit, don’t get tempted to take it out before the maturity date. Savour the wait so you don’t lose the interest you’ve earned. • If you’re saving up a deposit to buy property, try to save up for a bigger deposit so you’ll potentially borrow less in future. Of course, this may mean you are vulnerable to future market or price changes. • Reinvest any dividends you might get from your shares to increase your total number of shares”this could potentially give you greater returns in the longer term. Take control of your future Exercising delayed gratification can help you to take control of many aspects of your life, so why not start with your

ROBERT Patrick Francis Tomlinson was born at Nambour on 22nd July 1940. He was the eldest of Robert and Margaret Tomlinson’s three children, he has a sister Coral and a brother Jim. Bob grew up in Nambour, attending the Nambour Primary School until he had to leave school to help support the family, after his father was injured by a horse, which fell on him. Bob had a number of jobs prior to commencing a butcher/slaughterman apprenticeship, with DC Sheehan and Sons, which he completed. Bob continued to work at the butchery for a number of years. He also worked for a period on the con-

struction of the Wappa Dam near Yandina. In 1961 Bob came to Cooroy where he met his future wife, Iris. The friendship blossomed and they were married in Corooy at the Methodist Church, in 1964. Bob and Iris lived and worked in Nambour until 1966, when Bob was offered a butcher/ slaughterman job in Cooroy, with Merv Maher, however after one year the business floundered and Bob was made redundant. Bob then commenced a new career with Woodman and Son in waste management in which he remained for 33 years. Bob managed the rubbish collection for the Noosa Shire for a number of years, until Cleanaway took over the contract and Bob became a manager at their Maroochydore depot. Bob saw many changes in the industry, with the introduction of wheelie bins and the automation of the garbage trucks. With these changes the company restructured and Bob was offered the position as weigh bridge operator at the Nambour tip. This suited Bob down to the ground, as this job was four days on and four days off. As Bob was a keen fisherman, this allowed him more time to go fishing. Bob remained in this job until a medical issue forced him to retire at 60. Bob and Iris have two sons, Michael (born in 1970) and Donald (born in 1972), who they raised at the home they bought in 1967 and still live in today. Bob was a member of the Cooroy Amateur Fishing Club and was Grand Champion in 1970/71, and runner up the next year. One year competing in a State Open Competition at Noosa, Bob won his section and was presented with the Jack Alvey Angling Award for the most Snapper caught. Bob prided this ward and the badge is on his Cooroy Fishing Jacket to this day. Since Bob’s retirement he became an excellent cook. He loved making biscuits and cakes for all the family, his speciality was banana cakes and muffins. Bob also made jams, relishes and lemon butter. Visitors never left our house without a

bottle of whatever he had made. Over the years Bob enjoyed a game of tennis, and was also a member of the Nambour Rifle Club. He was also a member of the local Orchid Club for a period, then his interests went to Cactus and Succulents, which he tendered with a passion, one of his greatest achievements was to propagate, from a seed, a Sturt Dessert Pea, which came from Birdsville. Bob certainly had a green thumb. Bob was also very proud of all of his five grandchildren, and cherished the many happy hours he spent with them, and he was always interested in whatever they were involved in. Bob had many medical issues later in his life that he battled with, but he did not complain, and made sure it did not stop him making the important milestones in our family a special time. Bob’s last days were spent comfortable at home, in no pain. He passed with dignity, with his wife and sons by his side, along with close friend Glennis, who cared for him during those last days, and his second favourite female – his cat Shadow. Family and friends will look at their times with Bob as being filled with love, fun, and as Bob had a great sense of humour, also a lot of laughter. Bob will be sadly missed by Iris and all of his family, and by his many friends who he made over the years. Rest in peace Bob.

Take two: Ken Kunin & the Crooked Sky at the Majestic THEY say some things are worth waiting for. Ken Kunin and band were meant to headline the Majestic late in June. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the show had to be postponed. We are happy to announce that Saturday August 27th will see Pomona play host for the next stop along the way for Kunin’s “Living in Wynnum” Tour which puts a focus on life living in Wynnum after years spent living in Los Angeles. Kunin has a unique story. He was a successful recording and touring artist in the US who penned and performed a few hit songs including “Senorita” which was a #1 song on the Alternative Charts. He ran a small label called Underhill recordings as well in the mid 90’s to early 2000. He did however have the misfortune of releasing a solo album called “Attachments” on 9/11. Ruby’s song-writing influences are predominantly Alternate Country and Americana, with a hint of Bluegrass. Ruby has played festivals around Australia, including the Tamworth Country Music Fest, Urban Country Music Fest, Murwillumbah Country Roots Festival and the Originals Festival. We are very happy to be welcoming Ruby to the Majestic Theatre. For more information on Ruby, please visit h t t p s : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / rubygilbertmusic.

OH the fun to be had at Matt Fiddes Martial Arts here in Cooroy If you haven’t checked out Matt Fiddes Martial Arts here is Cooroy, you don’t know what you are missing. Not only do they run amazing programs for mighty matts (ages 3-7), juniors (7-14) and Adults (14 upwards) last weekend they ran a board breaking seminar for the juniors and adults. And as if that wasn’t enough fun they had a Super Hero Obstacle Party for the mighty matts too. Master Canavan came up to run a special fun seminar on how to break boards. Each student was given their own wooden board signed by Master Canavan (Head of Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Australia and 4th degree black belt.) and

(School owner and instructor) Mr Habershon. They were then all given the proper advice on how to safely break through their boards with either their feet, elbows or hand depending on their age and strength. It was incredible to watch, they were all very nervous at first and then elated after their board broke. Huge cheer erupted from all the parent, grand-parents and friends every time a board was broken. Huge smiles all round from proud and happy students. Mr Habershon said “This was a great opportunity for us to provide our students with something exciting and new for them to learn. I am proud of each and every one of them. And

this is an event we will defiantly run again next year.” And by the look on all of his students faces they will defiantly want to do it all over again too! So as the mighty matt were not allowed to break boards Mr Habershon and his team decided that they would run a Super Hero Obstacle Party for them. All the students came dressed as their favourite super hero, there was Batman, Ninja Turtles, Spiderman and many more. Each Super Hero had to face Mr Habershon (Spiderman), the Hulk (Mr Bonnici) and fight their way throw the obstacles to be rescued by Batman (Mr Riddle) at the end. They then had to rescue their

parents as they to attempted the course. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard that I cried!! Classes are on Wednesday Afternoons in the Cooroy State Primary School Hall. Mighty Matts 3;454;30pm. Juniors 4;456pm. Adults 6-7;30pm. The first 4 weeks are FREE! Call 1800 840 403 for more information.

COOROY RAG news Gymnasts benefit from competition experience

THE Cooroy Gymnastics Club sent a team of eight boys to the newly opened Caloundra Gymnastics Centre for their first competition of the year. The competition fielded competitors from Wide Bay to Brisbane from levels two to six. For some of the boys it was their first ever experience of a gymnastics competition with all athletes competing for apparatus and all around placings. Coach Jeff was very pleased with the boys performance and especially with the team spirit shown by the boys. The podium results for the boys were fantastic with the level two boys finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th & 7th in the all around over the six apparatus and Baylen finishing 2nd in the all around at level 4. King of the Mountain Festival a top day out By Jackie Bazzo ON Sunday 24 July, Pomona welcomed clear blue skies and a large crowd of people eager to enjoy the festivities and friendly atmosphere of the famous community orientated event. A project of The Cooroy & Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival continued its traditional of offering something for everyone with popular car displays, markets, animal farm, antiques fair, live entertainment and food stalls just a small part of its race day program. While some came to enjoy the diversity of attractions, for others it is all about the physical challenge of competing in one of Australia’s most gruelling events, the 4.2 km near vertical King of the Mountain Race up Mt Cooroora. With a field of 94 runners, the title of King of the Mountain went to Mark Bourne who ran a time of 23:53. Mark is the 2016 Mountain Running Champion and Australian Team representative and has a history of running up famous landmarks. Previous race achievements include the Empire State Building, Sydney Tower, Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Hong Kong ICC and Taipei 101. For the second year running, the Queen of the Mountain was awarded to local primary school teacher Leslie Saunders. Leslie’s passion for the race saw her devote much her time in its lead up to coaching and training with the Prince and Princess Race entrants. Also an Australian running champion, Leslie won the 2015 women’s outright and placed 1st in the Veteran category. Other achievements include winning the veteran categories in Kawerau New Zealand in 2014 and 2015. The growing international appeal and reputation of the famous Pomona race is evident in the second and third place winners coming from New Zealand and England. The inaugural Zinc 96.1 Prince and Princess race held on Saturday 23 July saw almost 60 children compete along a 3.4km track for the first entry in the record books. Aimed at children between 9-13 years of age, the honour of Prince of the Mountain went to Jack Pearson, aged 12 with the Princess title awarded to Lee Cleary, aged 13. Spurred on by his win, Jack went on to compete in Sunday’s Nestle 3km Family Fun Run, taking out an impressive 1st place in his age category. A chip off the old block, his father, John Pearson claimed first place overall. Event organiser Heather Manders said the King of the Mountain Festival owes its ongoing success to sponsorships from the local business community and the efforts of hard working volunteers. ‘An event of this scale simply isn’t possible without the support and help of our local community. Our volunteers work tirelessly over many months to provide a festival that offers opportunities for people to actively participate in a multitude of event inclusions and attractions’ Ms Manders said. ‘We want to thank everyone who came along to the 2016 King of the Mountain festival. The success of the community focused event means the Cooroy-Pomona Lions can continue to fund school programs and provide support and assistance to many local charities’ she said. After celebrating the success of the event and those of its participants, Lions organisers will enjoy a small break before planning and preparations get underway for next year’s King of the Mountain Festival on Sunday July 23. To review 2016 event highlights or to enquire about sponsorships or any other participation opportunities for the 2017 festival, head to the website: kingofthemountain.com.au or visit the King of the Mountain Facebook page.

Free NDIS information sessions The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for people with disability, their families and carers in Australia. To raise community awareness about the NDIS and ensure people with disability, their families and carers are ready for the change and opportunities the scheme will bring, Mamre Pave the Way will be holding free information sessions in your community and sharing materials and resources. On August 17th, Mamre Pave the Way will be visiting the Pomona Community House from 10am to 12 noon offering their Paving the Way to the NDIS presentation, as well as conversations with individuals and families, community groups and

government/non-government agencies. David Bowen, CEO of the National Disability Insurance Agency, says these information sessions are vital in being fully prepared for the NDIS. “Helping Australians understand the fundamental shift behind the NDIS – from the ad-hoc welfare model to one of empowerment and participation – is vital to the successful implementation of the Scheme.” Registrations are essential for presentations and can be completed on the Pave the Way website: www.pavetheway.org.au For more information or to register for a conversation, visit Pave the Way’s website or phone their office on (07) 3291 5800.

pomona Exhibitions at Railway Station Gallery CHRIS Lawlor, Kin Kin artist, will be having an exhibition in the Banana Shed at the Old Pomona Railway Station Gallery. The title of the exhibition is “The Second Life of Sepia”. The exhibition will open on 13 August and continue until 10 September. Chris says: “The Second Life of Sepia” is an accurate description of the exhibition’s colour schemes. It is also a metaphor that is explored through every canvas and board rescued from the curb-side, from hard rubbish piles or op shops. They are granted a second life. We live in a throwaway society where perfectly good or reusable products end up in landfill the minute people tire of them. The corollary to this is that as a society we are discarding people in the same fashion. “The Second Life Of Sepia” is a small statement in a small gallery, that empathy and compassion are big things and that they have not gone away.” The Banana Shed has recently been refurbished to look as original as possible. It is an ideal shed for displaying art works of various sizes in a rustic setting. Artists are invited to submit applications for exhibitions, workshops or small group meetings. Join Noel Foley for the Opening of Dreaming and Drawing, 11:30 Saturday, 6 August. Since moving to the Pomona area around three years ago, Noel has rejoiced in his return to the rain forest following a thirty five year hiatus in Darwin. “Having been born and raised in Papua New Guinea, I have been infused since birth by the sights, smells, textures and closeness of the forest, experiences far removed from the NT. “I have never been much interested in the “grand vista” but more so in the minutiae of the close in view necessitated by dense forest. “Since settling down here I have been blessed to live in two inspiring places in the Ring Tail Creek

n e i ” us m t Co Mea “ &

Painting by Kin Kin artist Chris Lawlor area with such wonderful landlords and friends as the Murphy and Gibbs families. Many of these works are inspired by these places and indeed these friends. “My love of birds and the forest emerged as the logical heartbeat of this exhibition. Coming home to lush greenery has also reminded me of the pleasure of simple drawing, something I have been doing throughout my childhood. “I have had a very successful professional art career, mostly using pastels which is essentially drawing with colour. These works have resulted in an invitation to exhibit and teach aboard the QEll, which in turn opened opportunities internationally. This will be my eighth solo exhibition. “Drawing in monochrome can be extremely rewarding, however I was unable to deny the colours of many of our magnificent birds. So, why not marry the two? “In this exhibition I have returned to my drawing roots and have made the conscious decision to keep the works to a manageable and practical size with simple, unobtrusive framing so as not to overpower the work.” Call 5485 2950 for more information or go to www.pomonartgallery.com.

pomona Pomona Pacers – Meet two of our amazing walkers

COOROY RAG

Helen Randall and Denise Ruttley My name is Helen and I and as it turned out it was joined the Pomona Pacers the best idea ever. I know that I am lucky Heart Foundation walking group in May 2015. that at 66 my heart, genPomona is a lovely friendly eral health and fitness are town on the Sunshine all good. However, things Coast and we are sur- changed dramatically rounded by beautiful for- around six months ago est walking tracks that our when I was diagnosed with group enjoys exploring dementia. Yes, it was a when we get together shock but believe me the lovely caring people in our every week day. I joined the Pomona Pac- walking group have made ers after my daughter (a this adjustment so much marathon runner) kept easier. I was advised by the phynagging me to join the walking group. I had been sician to keep walking and walking solo with my dog stay fit – and to keep up along the forest trails near my social contacts. Well my home and as it was how lucky I am to have my rather lonely I thought my Pomona Pacers buddies to daughter had a good idea walk with. The exercise is

important but the friendship, chatter and laughter is what keeps me going. We walk and talk but it’s more than walking. We share coffee on Wednesdays when the group gets even bigger with partners and friends popping in. We also have lots of other outings – moon walks, longer walks to lookouts and up hills (ouch, hamstrings) and many other celebration brunches and lunches for birthdays or whatever. I am a positive person and am trying to remain that way to slow down the onset of the dementia. But having the support and back up of the Heart Foundation walking group is a real help to me at this time, The Heart Foundation walking program across Australia is a fabulous program and it’s free! I recommend that you get involved and find one near you, even if you think your heart’s in good shape you just don’t know what else is around the corner. Our group is always coming up with ideas of social outings and our walk organiser, Karen Gosling, puts together a monthly program and she is always looking for new walks for us. Thank you to Karen and all my friends in the Pomona Pacers for your

friendship and support during the last few months. Denise has been walking with the Pomona Pacers for several years after being encouraged by her neighbour to come along. Denise fitted in easily and has been a wonderful support to many people in the group. She always keeps an eye on those who may be a bit down or unwell and gently helps wherever she can. Oh yes, and we all enjoy the great produce her and husband John very kindly share with us. Denise always has time for a laugh and can see the funny side to life. We are also grateful for her strong vocal chords when she lets us know there is traffic approaching. Car! One of Denise’s many talents is scrapbooking and we are very touched that Denise has produced a beautiful album dedicated to a year in the life of the Pomona Pacers. Denise has been collecting group photos and a few candid shots on our walks and outings for some months now as she builds a library of happy memories of our walking group. With great care and affection Denise has spent hours putting together this book

of moments and memories of the Pomona Pacers. As walkers come and go in our group Denise has shone a spotlight on the friendship that has grown within our group. Not a day passes without members of the group sharing coffee, swapping plants, planning a shopping trip or just lending a hand to someone who needs company. This companionship has been so artistically captured by Denise in a book we will all treasure. So, you might think of the Pomona Pacers as the local Heart Foundation walking group but really it is a walking group with a heart. Many thanks to Denise for going to great efforts to make this lovely keepsake about the Pomona Pacers. Would you like to join us? The Pomona Pacers walk Monday to Friday (except public holidays) for around 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk pace. We meet in front of the Pomona Community House at 7:00 am. So if you’d like to meet new friends, get a few walks in and enjoy some social outings we would only be too glad to welcome you. Thanks to Jan Wise for the great photographs. Enquiries to Karen on 0408 652 821.

Congratulations to Federal state school student Wesley McDonald (11y/o) who is in his second year of Rodeo split second place with 2014 poddy calf champion Ty Payne at the Mr Gravatt Rodeo on Saturday 23 july.

WINTER’S short days and brisk weather can cool even the most enthusiastic exercise regimes. With spring arriving soon, it is the perfect time to start getting more active and some of us are already thinking about renewing weight loss goals. To be active, we need to be properly nourished, and according to Dietitian and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, it is all about balance. Jodie is highly experienced at getting people into sustainable eating styles that allow them to steadily meet their goals. “We often find that what people believe to be a lack of willpower, is actually a nutrition imbalance. I work carefully with my clients to restore this balance, naturally reducing the cravings so it’s easier for them to make the choices they want.” Jodie says, a common problem for those wanting to lose weight, is feeling restricted with a ‘dieting’ mind set. Following a ‘diet’ only lasts so long before they crave the freedom of choice again. “Instead, I encourage my clients to shape their own eating style that allows weight loss while feeling nourished, not deprived”. Sometimes tech-

Horrible, hurting, hideous headaches IT’S Wednesday ... hump day, but with a few more days left before the end of the week, your head is pounding ... you ask yourself “How am I going to make it through today, let alone the rest of the week?! Why am I getting these headaches so often and how do I find out what to do to treat them best?!!” Well the first step is figuring out what type of headache is causing your pain. If you know your headache type, you can treat it correctly.....is it a migraine, a cluster headache or tension....or perhaps it may be sinus?? What lifestyle factors may help me to manage this condition? The best way to manage headaches is to avoid them. And to avoid them, you need to know what things (or triggers) bring them on. By finding and avoiding your triggers, you can limit how often you get headaches and how bad they are. Here are some of the most common headache triggers: Stress (either during a stressful time or right after stress subsides); Menstrual cycle in women; Changes in your routine, such as how much you exercise or how much you sleep; Fast-

nical factors get in the way such as digestive and metabolic issues. Jodie also investigates these so they can be addressed, allowing weight loss efforts to become more successful. The basics of eating in balance can be found in a free e-Guide available on Jodie’s website that also has recipes breaking down the nutrients against ingredients. Jodie’s six week ‘Spring into Shape’ program ($129 for six weeks) is now available. It starts with a personalised meal plan and the works on how to adapt it over time - ensuring you stay in shape in the long term. If you would like to know more, you can book an obligation free, mini appointment (10 minutes) with Jodie to ask get your questions answered. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. ing or skipping meals; Changes in the weather, heat, or high humidity; Bright lights, glare, or reflected sunlight; Foods, such as chocolate; Alcohol; Strong odours from perfume, paint, dust, and certain flowers; Some prescribed medicines (your pharmacist can advise on this). Try to avoid as many triggers as you can. Triggers add up, so the fewer you have at one time, the better your chance of preventing a headache. To manage your headaches: Use a headache diary to find your triggers; Make sure you sleep, exercise, and eat on a regular schedule; Don’t eat foods that are likely to trigger your headaches; Manage stress; Make sure you are drinking an adequate amount of water daily; Avoid smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke. Our LiveLife pharmacists are always here to assist you in the management of your headaches. So please ask for assistance when visiting our pharmacy, so that we may give you the most appropriate treatment for your symptoms. We have many over-the-counter pain relief medicines, as well as a myriad of complementary products and medicines that can assist in managing and preventing your symptoms.

Challenge accepted! ON the weekend of July 16 & 17, four teams from around the Cooroy area set out on the grueling task of tackling 96km in the Gold Coast hinterland. These 16 determined and slightly crazy participants, along with over 1000 more, partook in the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge. The event raises money for the Kokoda Youth Foundation and imitates the punishing and backbreaking Kokoda Track that our diggers had to endure during world war two. The course was definitely not a flat one, with

over 5000m of vertical climbing. It was a constant and extremely steep uphill (and just as steep) downhill battle. So understandably, injuries occurred left right and centre. Not only did this massive hike consist of never ending hills, but it also featured over 3km of trudging through eight knee depth creek crossings. And, while you were tucked up in bed on that Saturday evening, the teams continued trekking throughout the night, only stopping at their designated checkpoints to sign in, fill up

So the teams trekked in the wet, creating many boggy and slippery mud patches. But the constant reminder of what our troops went through in New Guinea was enough to keep them going through the tough of it. Injuries were a common theme throughout the journey. Special mention must go to the teams support crews. Way to go Kokoda teams! After trekking non-stop for over 29 hours, you did it!!! Well done.

SOMETIMES it’s hard to find a rural property that really thrills modern buyers. Older homesteads on old farms are delightful and can come with plenty of charm as well as the need for improvements and updates etc. Team Hinterland pride ourselves on presenting the best available properties in the marketplace and this one is simply a stunner. All improvements are around 1 year old, including the spacious family home still with the remainder of builder’s warranty that is transferred to the new lucky owners. This 32.7 acre lifestyle block is gently undulating with a rich mix of volcanic and scrub soils and a reliable meandering creek with some good fishing holes. The crisp white fencing sets the tone for the lowline cattle who enjoy lush cleared paddocks in the fresh country air. The property is situated on tourist route 42 & there is council advice that the property could carry 4 separate cabins through application. All this only about 30 minutes to Noosa and you certainly won’t find better value with the extensive infrastructure already in place and sheer natural beauty of the area. Call Paul Bielby and Michelle Vercoe at Team Hinterland Dowling Neylan to book your inspection. Asking $1,295,000 call now for more info on 0437 346 256.

Eumundi Dragons fire up U7’s Eumundi Dragons Vs Brothers Rhinos at Kawana was the most entertaining of all games this season and the boy’s best so far with pure rugby passion and skill. Taj was quick to kick into over-drive, scoring the first try (and what a beauty it was), doing what he does best, squeezing through the defence and over the line – twice! Jack was next to step up and boy did he deliver! placing 3 tries with outstanding team work and crucial help from the other terrific twin, Will. What a duo of destruction! Our super-sonic Jett was so fast today, he was just a blur, bombarding the Brothers defence with his speed I’m sure he broke the sound barrier. His timing was of the essence and he scraped in the wining try - just before the final whistle blew. All Eumundi’s defence was impressive, helping push out opponents. A great effort from both teams and thanks to Ben from the Rhinos who helped us make up numbers. Through the wind, the cold and driving rain, the final score came in at 8 - 7 Eumundi’s way. It was another great win for the Mighty Dragons! U8’s Eumundi Dragons vs Brothers Rhinos at Kawana. It was a tough game from the start for Eumundi against the very experienced Brothers’ disciplined defences, great ball handling skills and well executed striping. We did however, manage to capitalise on four opportunities, gladly taking them without hesitation. One of our four tries was delivered by the hard working Jett, with a long run down the side including a near-miss collision with a Brother’s player just metres from the line. Another of our tries was scored by Saxon, with a breakaway run half the length of the field. The Dragon’s showed amazing team work throughout the entire game as well as Noosa player Zeke (stepping in as an honorary Dragon) who scored two tries for us and made some amazing tackles. Great job Zeke and thanks for your help. The final score came to 4-9 in Brothers favour. Although our boys lost the game, it was to a very hard team - great effort boys! Eumundi Dragons are always on the lookout for more players in the U6-U12 age divisions. To join our club, please send an inquiry by e-mail to admin@dragonsrugbyunion.org.au

Pomona Table Tennis COMPLETE TREE SERVICE

ADVICE & FREE Quotes

0419 616 110

FAMILIES, youngsters and our elders are all becoming keen to find a sport and leisure activity that can be enjoyed to promote health and togetherness at all levels. Table tennis is being played in Pomona, hidden from the adverse effects of the weather, set in the light and airy Primary School hall. With five championship tables available, the atmosphere for fun filled exercise has been created. Beginners, intermediates and anyone that revels in a sporting challenge, mingle to topspin and slice the forgiving white or yellow ball. At this year’s King of the Mountain festival the Pomona Table Tennis Group invited all to a special marquee, set up to promote the game of table tennis. Visitors were encouraged to face the “mean robot”, firing relentlessly at the brave contestants – red faced and satisfied to have given the android a run for its money. Players rekindled their love for the game of table tennis. We are looking forward to welcoming new players to our Wednesday and Friday nights sessions from 5pm onwards. There will always be some friendly coaching available on the night – please contact Bernhard (0148 158 684) if there are any questions or please, just come along for the fun.

Last Home Game of the Season WHAT an amazing season it has been for the Cutters. We have had quite a year and we are sad that it is nearly all over. But what a great way to finish off the fixtures before the finals…… A HOME GAME !!!!!! On the 6th August the last fixture game will be held at our very own home grounds at Cooran. This is a day not to be missed. Get in early and book the bus with Belinda on 0408 113 358. The last 2 weeks of footy have been a bit up and down, but that is how footy is. A loss to Caloundra was a hard game but Kyle Adams, however, still had a blinder taking the 3 points for man of the match, 2 points to Jack Griffin and 1 point to Nathan Woods. Playing Nambour was a totally different game, we had the lead 28-10 at half time. Sitting on the edge of our seats throughout the 2nd half was an understatement. Nambour came back and scored a few times and the Cutters pulled out all their tactics and really put in an awesome effort but with just 2 minutes to go, Nambour scored again and converted, leaving us a draw 28-28. Phil Anderson took out man of the match with 3 points followed closely by with 2 points to Dylan Crawford Window and 1 point to Carl Olive. Great effort to you all.
