It is a time for celebrating with family and friends, And remembering the story that Christmastide sends, And as we rejoice, we must give thanks for the reason, We are celebrating and grateful for, this wonderful season. The Rag sends our greetings from all of us here, With best wishes for Christmas, and a Happy New Year, May your days be filled with love and with fun, And the blessings of Christmas embrace everyone.

Apex Park was full to brim with spectators cheering on the competitors in the Wimmers East Versus West Tug of War. The East Side Traders were ecstatic to retain their title for another year. The crowd then settled down on blankets and camp chairs for an enjoyable evening of entertainment sponsored by IGA Cooroy including the Hinterland Christian Centre Choir, Uke Crazy People and Smokin Mirrors topped off by the Cooroy Mountain Spring Water Fireworks which just get better and better each year. The free activities had cues of people all evening with The Cooroy Rag Rides, the Hinternoosa Sales Team Caravan of Smiles and face painting all enormous hits with the crowds. “This event just gets better and better each year. There are so many people that make it the special event that it is. There is a long list of sponsors, the six thousand odd people that come to the event, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Police and our MCs who all gave up copious amounts of time,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. “The volunteers are amazing, they run around all day in their red Stellar Conveyancing Christmas volunteer shirts, marshalling the crowd for the street parade, manning the Chamber

information booth, selling raffle tickets and helping Santa to name just a few things they do. They decorate Cooroy in November and in January pull down all the decorations and pack them away again.” Some of our new Noosa councillors, Noel Playford, Tony Wellington, Sandy Bolton, Frank Pardon, Frank Wilke and Joe Jurisevic attended and helped out with the judging and all seemed to have a great time. The year is closing in, Christmas is nearly here, And then we will welcome, the hope-filled bright New Year. What a year this one has been, it seems it has really flown, And politics of course, has put on a show of its own. We had an election with the Government evicted, With the result almost the same as the gurus predicted. The new Parliament is still behaving in a manner quite embarrassing, Noisy, disorderly, and too much personal harassing. Asylum seeker problems, disorganised and politicised, Whatever the authorities do, is angrily criticized. Education is a political football, sadly in hopeless confusion, All they wrongly think about, is that money is the only solution. Universities are complaining, that entrants aren’t too bright, After many years of schooling, many can’t read and write. Indonesia, China, and East Timor, are in a diplomatic tizzy, Because it seems our snooping lads, have been a little overbusy. Wouldn’t it be nice if, in this season of peace, Our politicians declared that this bickering would cease, And that Parliament would use reasonable debate, To manage the important affairs of the State. Be polite to each other, nice mannered, and kind, A sweeter Parliament you would never find!! (That flapping noise you can hear in the night, Is a flock of pigs, in airborne full flight).

BOUQUET to the people of Cooroy. I visit Cooroy from time to time, and was there last Friday spending a happy few hours following a medical appointment, visiting opshops, chemist, the IGA etc. The type of open friendliness and pleasantness of people in Cooroy is outstanding and makes it a very special place. The sense of community and pride and happiness in that community is palpable and really shines through. That is an extremely valuable asset for a town to have, way above and beyond the value of the dollar. The sense of the town’s civic integrity obviously comes from the fact that Cooroy is still place of social coherence, despite of the steady growth that all of the Sunshine Coast has undergone in recent decades, including Cooroy. And the

Council’s good stewardship of the public spaces has also contributed to this sense of ambience and pleasantness of surroundings, including lovely shady trees. The town’s organically sustainable size has obviously got a lot to do with its happiness and the fact that small independent businesses are an appreciated part of the community rewarded with local loyalty. Though Cooroy’s specialness may seem a quaint “old Australia” to some, possibly inevitably (but tragically) bound for extinction in these times of exponential growth, Cooroy needs to be vigilant and purposefully proactive in consciously guarding this rare (fast becoming more so) and precious gift of peace and communal social warmth. Thanks for the vibes guys! Keep it together, keep it

a happening thing! Seasons greeting to all the lovely townsfolk of Cooroy. BRICKBATS to the exowners of a Dunbar St property who sold their house to a recently widowed, retired lady from Eumundi. Greta arrived to take possession of her new home at the appointed time only to find the exowners drinking beer on her front lawn & refusing entry to her new home. Hours later when her house keys were delivered she discovered why - the house had been left in a dirty, disgusting mess and needed professional cleaning. BRICKBAT to whoever is stealing our plants from our garden in the front nature strip at Dath Henderson Rd, Tinbeerwah. We are both in our 80s and wanted to pretty up the neighbourhood . We are very disgusted in this theft, as we would

have been only too happy to give cuttings to anyone who asked. BOUQUETS to the people of Cooroy & surrounding area for their help & support in raising over $300 at the sausage sizzle for Drought Stricken Aussie Farmers. BOUQUETS to the people who thanked SES members for their time on Friday night at the turning on of the Christmas Tree lights and on Saturday at Christmas in Cooroy. Our SES enjoys being part of our community events and as volunteers giving our time freely, appreciate being appreciated. BRICKBATS to the rotten thieves who stole my car from my front lawn on December 1st and then decided it would be fun to burn it. I had to pay $304.10 to have the burnt out wreck removed. Some people are scum.

BRICKBATS to the young man who started a punch up at Christmas in Cooroy. Disgraceful behaviour in front of young children at a family even. Thankfully the police stopped things before it got too out of hand. Seems there always has to be one in every crowd.

Libby goes from Prep to Kindy LIBBY Pigdon has retired as a volunteer from the Cooroy Primary School after what she describes as 14 enjoyable years in the pre-school and Prep grade. Desley Smith who she has worked with for the past six years, along with Principal Jenny Easy, thanked Libby

and gave her a lovely bouquet of flowers. Libby and Desley started the concerts for Share & Care at the CWA Hall for Christmas in 2008. Since then the concerts are at the Primary School Hall two or three times a year. But Libby is going back to Cooroy Kindy where she was Diana’s relief teacher for many years. Libby says she will enjoy the wonderful renovations in 2014.

Last minute financial tips this Christmas Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WELL here it is - that special time of year again. Where has the year gone? It seems that every year goes by quicker than the last. As everyone prepares for that magical day of the year, it’s a good idea to keep a close watch on your finances. If you’re anything like me, you tend to leave your purchases a little late and put everything on the credit card. That’s fine, as long as remember to attend to it before the Boxing Day sales really get you to a point of no return... Here are some suggestions to keep things on track over the festive season; • Plan the purchase of your Christmas gifts to suit your budget. Write down everyone that you need to buy for and keep your eye out for specials in catalogues sent by many of the larger shops. Do your best to spot a bargain this week and take advantage of the post Christmas sales in preparation for next year. • Budget for Christmas by saving in a Christmas Club account. As little as $20 per week will mount up to over $1,000 in a year’s time. Where you can, avoid using the credit card and use this savings instead. • Make the most of our wonderful local markets with home made goodies that can be given as gifts or even better, make your own gifts. It’s amazing what you can find and put together to make a wonderful homemade hamper, and (as we all know) nothing is more special than a handmade personalised gift. • If you have a large family to buy for, consider a secret Santa gift, where only one gift is purchased but everyone in the family still gets a present. • Don’t go overboard in the food department; plan your menus appropriately to suit your budget. Most of us overindulge at Christmas time way too much. • While it may sound funny, don’t forget to look at increasing your contents insurance if you have lashed out on some bigger items for Christmas and if you’re lucky enough to be doing any kind of international or domestic travel, don’t forget about your travel insurance. Hopefully these ideas will make things a little easier over this Christmas season and give you something to think about and work towards for the next. Merry Christmas, enjoy your time with family and friends, stay safe and drive carefully. I hope you have a great start to 2014. Remember, if you’d like to discuss your finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

news Community Bank offers university scholarship

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank is joined by Chris Roff and Stacey Daveson from NDSHS and many of the hopeful Year 12 scholarship recipients ONE Year 12 student from Noosa District State High School will soon be adding to their graduation celebrations. Well known for its support of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) activities, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo

Bank has now pledged its support to one local student when their new scholarship program application period opens in early December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part

of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. “Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university for the first time in 2014,” Geoff said. “Our Cooroy Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing some of the financial pressure on the recipient and their family. Maybe one day our

community will benefit directly from the skills and knowledge they bring,” he added. The scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5,000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will be renewed to assist the second year of their study. Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted with the news that another NDSHS student will attend university next year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This will be the second year this scholarship will be awarded and we’re delighted to be chosen as the school who will give a student

the opportunity to take their dreams to the next level. Last year, the inaugural scholarship was awarded to local lad, John Noble. He will soon enter his second and final year and is doing very well in his chosen field, which is great news. Applications are invited from eligible students on line at www.bendigoadelaide. com.au/scholarships and will be assessed in January 2013 after the application period expires on January 24. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university study. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception or by visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 5447 7131.

A small village with a big heart WHILST some towns and villages on the Sunshine Coast struggle to recover from the economic difficulties of the last few years, the small hinterland village of Cooroy is abuzz with activity and life. The atmosphere is vibrant and uplifting and begs the question - what is the secret to this community’s success? To the locals the ‘secret’ is obvious - people who live in Cooroy simply love the place and ensure local businesses, sporting clubs, and community activities receive lots of support. Mel and Gill Luke, owners of Cooroy’s largest employer, the Super IGA, have experienced many highs and lows of business life on the Sunshine Coast over 28 years and believe Cooroy has something very special. “We had the opportu-

nity six years ago to purchase the store in Cooroy and we have always heard it was a very nice area to work in and to live in, so we took it,” Mel Luke said. “Once people discover Cooroy, I mean, what a great place to live on the coast…it is one of those places you bring up your children,” Gill said. “The town has a big heart, people shop locally and support local businesses.” In addition to the loyal support of the community, Mr Luke believes the range of services available in Cooroy also help businesses thrive. “There is a good choice of banks here, good medical facilities, schools, good access to public transport, restaurants and of course a supermarket which stocks a huge range of products,” Mr Luke said. “There is also a very

strong and active Chamber of Commerce in Cooroy and a lot of the businesses work with each other to build the community. “There really is no need to go anywhere else.” With so much to offer, Mr Luke said there was a growing need for good affordable homes to cater for individuals and families wanting to share in the Cooroy lifestyle. “It is a great town and it is certainly growing, so there is a need for things like the Erindale Park estate, obviously people want to live here and enjoy the lifestyle that the current residents of this community have,” he said. Local residents and developers of Erindale Park, Kev and Val Kelly share the same passion for Cooroy. “We want to create something truly special

✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓

Mel and Gill Luke at Erindale Park. In a few years time I would love to see the place full of families and kids enjoying their new homes and the expanse of shared open space,” Mr Kelly said. “I believe it is the perfect community to raise a family, start a business and enjoy the relaxed and laid-back lifestyle of offer on the Sunshine Coast.” To celebrate the launch of the first stage of Erindale Park, the developers have launched a community competition which simply asks

participants to explain What do you love about Cooroy? In ten words or less, you will be in the draw to win 1 of 2 great prizes worth $500 each from local businesses Maison De Provence and the IGA Supermarket. For more information about this great competition, the Erindale Park estate and the Cooroy community please visit: www.erindalepark.com.au or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

news $1000 to Rural Fire Brigade

COOROY RAG

WE’VE all been reminded in recent weeks that we’re in bush fire season. With the horrible images from the ongoing fires in The Blue Mountains and several contained outbreaks locally, our local Rural Fire Brigade is warning against complacency. The official bush fire season is still very much in effect across our region and Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade Volunteer Community Educator, Jackie Kirk says it’s just about remaining vigilant. “There’s no doubt we all need to bushfire prepared. In recent years we’ve seen significant increase in grass and vegetation growth, so the message is to prepare, act and survive. If we all do a little, we can save a lot,” Jackie said. Grass fires can quickly threaten people, property and livestock, so everyone should prepare themselves, their family and their property during the fire season. The most important preparation is to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan, which encompasses all the actions people need to take before and during bush fires. Landholders should also be aware that while the Bush Fire Danger Period is current, a permit is required for the lighting of any fire that is more than 2 metres

in any direction,” Jackie added. Bush Fire Survival Plans and information on preparing for bush and grass fires can be found at www.rfs.qld.gov.au. Jackie was also keen to mention the station is always happy to hear from locals who are interested in joining the RFB and volunteer their time. In the meantime, the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank has been keen to lend its support to the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade. “We really come to appreciate our sponsorship from the Cooroy Community Bank branch in recent years and we’re thrilled with their latest donation of $1,000. This has allowed us to purchase a new marquee to be used at future community events and functions. The last one leaked so we’re very grateful for the protection in the months and years ahead,” Jackie said. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the sponsorship continues to be a great fit for both parties. “We should all be aware of the fantastic work all the Rural Fire Brigade stations do around our region. We’re delighted to support the Black Mountain station. The volunteer crews are inspirational with the time and effort they put in year round” Geoff added. Since 2008, Cooroy Community Bank Branch has given back more than $450,000 to community groups, schools and organisations just like Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade. The branch continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more money stays in the area for local investment.

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* Australian families are changing shape with the number of blended and step-families on the rise, bringing with it new financial challenges for today’s modern family. The latest AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report, Modern Family, reveals that blended and step-families in Australia now make up nearly twice the share of families they had in the 1980s**. The new report finds step-families make up almost seven per cent of all couple families in Australia, and blended families four per cent, together accounting for almost 11 per cent of couple families. Unlike single parent families, which account for more than a quarter of all Australian families with children, blended and step-families have the benefit of having two potential wage earners in the household. However, the report says they tend to be worse off financially than ‘intact’ families (those with two natural parents, biological or adoptive). Blended and step-families often have lower rates of home ownership because each parent is more likely to have come into the relationship with their own complex set of circumstances. Unlike the TV sitcom The Brady Bunch, the reality for many people in a new relationship with their own kids and step-kids is that their finances are under pressure and they’re often less likely to own a home. Parents in blended and step-families are likely to be concerned about how to protect their wealth for their children and how to manage financial obligations to former partners and children living with another parent. Here are some of the strategies blended and step-families need to consider, however as each family’s circumstances are different, it’s important to seek professional financial

planning advice to help get your family finances back on track: Prepare a budget It might sound basic, but first and foremost it’s essential for new couples with kids do a budget and work out where their money is going. This is often one of the last things couples discuss in a new relationship, but having honest and open discussions around money and budgeting early on will pave the way for financial health. Start reducing debts Review all your debts and, where possible, consolidate these to save costs, especially with personal loans and credit card debts. A financial planner can then help you map out a plan to reduce your debts sooner than what you think. Review insurances It’s important to review all insurances (death, total and permanent disablement, income protection and trauma cover) to ensure your new family is protected in the event of a crisis. This includes updating beneficiaries named in life insurance policies and super accounts – if you forget to remove an ex-spouse from a life insurance policy following a divorce and you die, your ex could get your life insurance pay out instead of your children or new partner. Estate planning To ensure children and spouses in a blended family receive the inheritance of a loved one, a well-crafted estate plan is required. This can involve preparing or updating any existing wills, trusts and powers of attorney, as well as reviewing life insurances. Consolidate super Review your super funds and consider consolidating accounts if there are multiple funds to save costs and build your retirement sav-

THE Cooroy Lower Mill Board recently held a public meeting President Tex Pipke, said he was encouraged by the turn out. “The meeting resulted in some new

members who will now be entitled to vote at AGMs and also run for the board,” said Tex. Members will also have an input into the planning stages of the Lower Mill Site ensuring that the future of the project is in line with what the community wants and that this important iconic landmark is utilised as an attraction that enhances the town and highlights our rich pioneering heritage. The Mill Board encourages public interest and one of their goals at the moment is to improve the information flow to the community and increase membership. If you would like to know more about the project and how you can get involved, phone Tex Pipke on 4012 768 645 or email him on hrtex@iinet.net.au

Back (L-R) Shayne, Tahlia & Ellie; Front: (LR) Charli, Verna Hewitt (Kindermusik Educator) & Aleà MUSIC2GROW was established in Cooroy in 2009 and these girls are our very first Kindermusik graduates. The programme is a seven year continuum (from birth). Some of these girls have been attending classes with me since they were 3 years old and one of them since she was a baby of 10 months! Over the course of the 4 semester Young Child programme, they have been introduced to rhythm, notation and musical symbols and have learned the glockenspiel, dulcimer and recorder. I am very proud of them all and wish them all the best as we farewell them from Kindermusik.

We’re over the moon at our new location in Maple Street (formerly Cooroy Shoes & accessories) SHOP 2/1A GARNET STREET (Opposite Cooroy Hotel) 5442 6025

OWNER of Cooroy Shoes, Linda Smith, is very excited to have moved into their new premises with the shop looking bigger and brighter than ever. “It’s a great move as it is a lot bigger which gives our customers more room to move in the shop and we have more space to display our shoes so that customers have a better opportunity to see all of the great styles we have,” said Linda. “We will also be able to expand our range of shoes, handbags, wallets and gifts in time.” Moving Cooroy Shoes to its newer and larger premises gave Linda the opportunity to also re-locate her clothing store, Over The Moon, to where the where the shoe shop was in Maple Street. Cooroy Shoes is now located just four doors down, in the beautifully restored old bank building in Maple Street, Cooroy. “At the moment as well as having a wide selection of beautiful footwear we also have a fantastic range of gifts for Christmas from hand painted handbags and wallets to locally made jewellery, unique silk scarves and handmade resin key rings. We also have some great inexpensive unique gifts, perfect for Secret

Santa or Christmas stockings such as novelty notebooks, and fun shoe shaped wine bottle holders and bottle charms and hard case ID protection wallets. “This season is really all about colour and having fun with it both in shoes and handbags, especially for the more casual look. Colours that have been really prominent are cobalt, coral, and hot pink, either as a single colour or as part of multi colour sandals. White has also made a really big comeback this season and often being used to offset other colour in the look. The more formal dressy look has been dominated by the neutrals with a mid heel. In terms of accessories, colourful interesting bags that really make a statement, have been very popular. Bright and bold jewellery has also been really popular this season and we have a number of ranges of handmade jewellery in the store. “Our customers walk in the door and are always delighted to see the colour and the varied and interesting ranges of shoes and handbags in the store. They also always comment on the relaxed and fun atmosphere in the shop, as well as appreciating the great customer service.”

Great support for new auto business TONY Bancroft has been enjoying getting to know a lot of the locals since August, after buying Cooroy Automotive Services in Jarrah Street, Cooroy. Tony says he has had a great response from the advertisements he’s been running in the Cooroy Rag for his maintenance service special. He also knows how inconvenient it is when cars break down over the holidays, so he will be keeping his doors open for business, apart from Christmas and Boxing Day and Friday 27th Dec. Give him a call to take advantage of his service special which he will be running up until January 31st, phone 5442 5099.

Through training I have also increased my skill level in the field in areas of organic food production for cattle, cattle behaviour, artificial insemination and more experience with farm machinery.” Speaking at last night’s awards dinner, QRITC’s CEO Phil Stewart said Payton was a fine ambassador for rural skills training and embodied the spirit of the awards. “The QRITC would like to congratulate Payton for her commitment to training in the agricultural field and sharing her knowledge and experience with fellow students,” said Mr Stewart.

pomona Pomona Kin Kin Road nominated for review

COOROY RAG THE Newman Government will review speed limits on 100 Queensland roads from next month as part of

our commitment to improve road safety. Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said the Pomona Kin Kin

Mystery crafters return for the silly season

Road would be reviewed by safety engineers to determine if the speed limit will be decreased. “Concerns about this particular section of road have been raised with me in the past and I am pleased it will be properly assessed to determine whether changes need to be made,” Mr Gibson said. “The feedback received showed 100% of submissions called for the speed limits to be decreased.

“We will now leave it with the safety experts to undertake their inspection and determine whether speed limits should be changed.” Mr Gibson said the Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson requested a review of speed limits as part of this government’s commitment to revitalise front line services and improve road safety. “Following more than 3300 submissions the

list was narrowed down to 100 roads including 68 state-controlled and 32 local roads,” Mr Gibson said. Roads were prioritised based on frequency of public nomination, crash data, local knowledge and recent maintenance and upgrades. The speed limit reviews will be completed by mid-2014 and a list of the 100 roads to be reviewed can be found at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ speedlimitreview

IN a time when close to 50% of Australians who graduate as teachers leave the profession within the first five years, a teacher in our community has been recognized for his long -standing service to the teaching profession. On International Teachers Day this year, Mr John Byrne of Cooran State School was officially

acknowledged for his 35 years of service to teaching. Of his 35 years, Mr Byrne has been teaching in Pomona, Kin Kin and Cooran for the past 25 years. His work here has traversed generations. Teaching mostly in Prep /Preschool, Mr Byrne has tended to many an adventure seeking child, as well as

many an anxious parent, with their introduction into the schooling life. When asked how, after 35 years, he gets himself through a day’s work he replies “I spend a lot of time singing in the classroom. I try to keep the day fun and laugh with the children. We like to have a good balance of work and play.” Mr Byrne further adds, “After school, I mend check and feed my cattle. They relax me.” He then cheekily adds “and they can’t say my name.” When asked what his secret is to teaching for so long, Mr Byrne admits he finds children very enjoyable to interact with. “I like to observe the individual talents each child possesses, and then I watch how these talents evolve throughout primary school and on into a child’s adult life. It’s fascinating. ” A humble man, Mr Byrne is reticent to say he has a gift with young children. Instead he says “I think teaching young children is a gift” but from the community of Cooran State School and beyond I would like to say, Mr John Byrne, you are a gift to our children and to us.

COOROY RAG

Have you prepared for storm season? JUST like fire and flood plans it is also important to have a storm plan this season. We have already had a taste of some summer storms and as we have seen, they can be very unpredictable and dangerous. You need to be prepared, have a plan in place and be ready to activate it. Safety should always be a priority as severe storms can be extremely dangerous and lives can be saved

through careful and strategic planning. You could create your own plan or alternatively you can download a template off the many websites that have created comprehensive lists that require you to simply fill in the details. Stormwise.com.au is a helpful site and offers down-loadable home emergency plans that are easy to follow. It is also important that

all your machinery is properly serviced and in working order. Generators, chainsaws and water pumps may be required after the storm has passed and if these are not in working order and have not been serviced and tested you may find yourself in more trouble. Stale fuel is the most common cause of hard starting on small engine products. This can be

avoided by adding a fuel stabiliser or by using products on a more regular basis. The worst thing for a small engine is to leave it stored in the shed for months with fuel sitting in the fuel tank. It is also important to have the right equipment for the job. You can’t use a pruning chainsaw to cut up a full size gum tree that has fallen on your house or shed. Just like, you cannot run an entire house on a camping generator if your power goes off. These items need to be carefully selected to suit the task or they will be inadequate and may fail when you need them the most. A specialist power equipment dealer such as Mower & ATV Solutions can provide you with the right tools for the job, how to use them and how to keep them in top working order. They offer the ever reliable Stihl range of chainsaws and power tools as well as Honda powered emergency generators if you encounter a blackout. If your equipment needs attention they can also have it serviced and storm ready for when that big black cloud appears above.

COOROY RAG

Let’s start a Cooroy Roo Watch! As time wore on and I didn’t see them at any of the regular hotspots I decided to approach the Cooroy Rag to run a story, perhaps see if anyone knew where they were, or if your own roos had disappeared too. “Yes, we’d love to”... and I thought we might even get a few people to keep an eye out and maybe even start a facebook page called Cooroy RooWatch so that we’d know where to see them. Driving back up the hill I was starting to write it in my mind and as I turned into the driveway AROUND Cooroy we have an admirable variety of wildlife that I think almost everybody appreciates, although personally I will admit to finding the jumping ants hard to love. Living in the middle of the sector from Black Mountain Road to Cudgerie Drive I have shared my land with many and especially the extended family of kangaroos who made my paddock home right through last year ’s drought. This year they

have thrived with a succession of joeys and even the (I am told) rare twins achieving a degree of maturity... that’s maturity in the sense of teenage boys reaching maturity anyway. But at the end of October they all left. Just like that, a Marie Celeste of emptiness descended on the paddock and the valley. Not a sign. No one saw them at all. The watering holes were deserted and the paddocks free from roo poo.

And this family was well know with the older male (“Big Daddy”) having two distinct black dots on his right hand side. We also have Mum (gender stereotyping seems hard to avoid), Trophy Wife (the younger female who was smitten with Big Daddy but has now taken up with one of the young males), The Twins and Junior who gives his dad a hard time and gets a resounding rebuking bark for his troubles.

Lilly Pilly BOUTIQUE & GIFTS

there in front of me, lazing on the grass was a roo. A young male in that nonchalant leaning on his elbow position they seem to love. Another career nipped in the bud by unpredictable nature! But one cuckoo does not a spring make, nor does a solitary roo mark a return of the family. He could have been a youngster from the regulars thrown out by Big Daddy for being a dirty stopout or he could have been a wandering roo, an asylum seeker looking for a place to make a new life and driven from some other family. He’s gone back into the forest now, leaving the paddock quiet. I think there’s a place in this crazy world for RooWatch and it’ll be a quiet success if enough people are interested and prepared to join in. City visitors always want to see some kangaroos, don’t they? Please contact me at daveclayden@gmail.com or go directly to the facebook page Cooroy Roowatch and click LIKE. Dave Clayden

Inspiring Cooroy

Guest speakers at ‘Inspiring Cooroy’ Cartoon Dave, Tex Pipke, Matt Golinski with Dave Hansen THE Inspiring Australia Movement is gaining rapid momentum and unprecedented support throughout the cities and regional areas of Australia. The movement Inspires local communities to connect by creating local events where inspirational speakers from the community tell their story. By connecting with their stories Inspiring Australia intends to prevent skyrocketing suicide rates. Inspiring Cooroy (part of this movement) held its second event on November 28 at Cooroy Bowls Club. These events provide a plat-

form for the Cooroy community to catch up, connect and make new friends. Funds raised from the event went to the Cooroy Family Support Group, a very worthwhile charity that offers free counselling for family & domestic violence, relationship, depression and Grief & Loss. to give members of the community the opportunity to give much needed cash to a local charity. Inspiring Cooroy was initiated by a local, Richard Hansen of Impact Presentations. Through connecting with locals and their stories Richard has discovered amazing inspiration which de-

dining & entertainment RSL welcomes new manager

serves to be shared. Guest speakers were: Matt Golinski – In 2011 celebrity chef Matt Golinski’s world was turned upside down in a way that many of us would find unimaginable. Matt’s battle to recover is one of true courage and inspiration. His fighting spirit and personal story was truly inspirational. Dave Hackett – Despite leaving school at an early age, Cartoon Dave has written 14 books and inspires others to develop their creativity and follow their passions. Tex Pipke – Canadian born and raised Tex made his way to Australia arriving in Cooroy 20 years ago. Tex went into business in the area and currently still owns and operates Town and Country Rentals. He has been and still is and active member of several community groups and shared his story of how Cooroy inspired him. Stay tuned for the next Inspiring Cooroy event, I guarantee you will come away with a renewed sense of community and the positive outlook that you can make a difference.

Karen, Tina and Sandy KAREN Marriott and Sandy Bolton welcome Tina Bernard as the new Manager of the Cooroy RSL and Bowls Club. Tina is a fireball of energy ready to make some changes. With an impressive track record of managing clubs in Australia and overseas, most recently turning the Chermside Club around from massive debt to a thriving venue, she is more than up for turning the Cooroy Club and Hall into what she believes should be this town’s heartbeat. With a very welcoming, genuine nature Tina is eager to get to know the locals, so drop into the Club and say Hi, and while you’re there put in an entry to the RSL’s new promotion to win a cruise.

Belli Old-Time Dance BELLI Hall’s New Year’s Eve Old-time Dance will be held on Tuesday, 31 December, starting at 7.30 pm. A big congratulations to Jim and Jean Gardner of Cooroy who will celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary on December 20th. The couple, who married in 1947, came to Australia as 10 pound Poms and had 5 pounds to their name after their wedding. Jim cheekily says the secret to their long and happy marriage is lots of red wine.

health Wide range of services at Lakeridge

COOROY RAG LAKERIDGE Health and Beauty in Cooroy offer a wide range of services, from waxing, facials, massage – remedial and relaxation, clinical skin peels, manicures and pedicures, cosmetic tattooing, spray tanning Bowen therapy and now IPL Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation. Want to know more

about IPL? Hair Removal IPL is effectively trying to destroy the blood vessel that feeds the hair papillae, by using controlled heat and light sources, thus resulting in hair reduction. Usually a series of treatments is required to achieve

long lasting results This is usually a minimum of 4-6 and possibly up to 8-10 treatments. When the light is emitted from the hand piece, it tries to detect a dark chromophore below the surface, in this case a hair shaft. For this reason, IPL is only suitable for dark hair, as it cannot detect a chromophore in whit or grey hair. Ideally, fair skin is better to treat, as the light by-passes the chromophore in dark skin (melanin) and goes straight to the hair papillae. However,

we use hand pieces suitable for dark, tanned even black skin. For this reason it is important to know what equipment your operator is using. Skin Rejuvenation Pigmentation, solar lentigo’s, age spots, all

5442 5556

a thing of the past now with IPL Skin Rejuvenation. Years of sun damage and exposure can be treated in a series of 4-6 treatments using our Lux G and Lux Y hand pieces for superior skin rejuvenation. We usually recommend treatments every 2-4 weeks and it is expected that the skin surface will take on a brown, flaky appearance as underlying melanin makes its way to the skins surface. Equally important is the use of SPF 30+, and trying to avoid any more direct sun exposure during and after treatment. Highly recommended is the use of exfoliant and serums to regenerate. Call us now on 5442 6239 to book an appointment to have your unwanted hair removed or any of the other services we offer and enjoy being pampered at our clinic located at 3 Ruby St Cooroy. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year Phone Tony for appointment SKIN needling (Collagen Induction Therapy) offers smoother, clearer, tighter skin, said Janice Trainer at Enhanced Beauty, Cooroy. It’s a treatment to thicken the dermal layer that diminishes with age. Needling treats lines, enlarged pores, redness, acne scarring, stretch marks and scars. Skin needling has been around as early as the 1940s and it has recently experienced a surge in popularity as more and more people are discovering the anti-ageing benefits of this unique procedure. Skin needling is performed with a digital needling pen with micro-fine needles or single needle application, depending on what needs to be treated. It is primarily used to plump up elastin, helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even

out the complexion and improve the appearance of scars. The efficiency of the treatment is further enhanced when applied in conjunction with quality anti-ageing serums. The beauty of skin needling, is that it continues to work long after the treatment is completed. Although some immediate improvement is noted, over the next six to nine months inner healing of the dermis continues to smooth and tighten the skin as collagen begins to lay down in a smooth, more regular manner. Skin needling can be performed on all skin types and colours and anywhere on the body. In sensitive areas topical anaesthetic can be applied to numb the area and alleviate any discomfort. Up to four to eight treatments are required for maximum results and a maintenance ses-

sion can be performed every six weeks. Cost starts at $80 per session. To find out more, or make an appointment, phone Janice at Enhanced Beauty on 0412 778 385.

Maximise your health fund rebate COOROY optometrists Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie are reminding all local residents who have extras coverage with a private health fund to make the most of their health fund membership before it expires at the end of the year. Heather from optometry@cooroy says most annual health funds optical benefits expire at the end of December and a lot of people may have not used up their rebates or claimed their full entitlements. “Don’t wait until it is too late” she advises. “Buying spectacles or contact lenses at optometry@cooroy and claiming your rebate is fast, easy and convenient as you don’t

need to fill out any extra paperwork or visit your health fund branch as we can claim directly through HiCaps on your behalf” Jenny says. “All you need to do is pay any gap that may remain.” Express your individuality and sense of style this summer and take advantage of your unused health rebate by purchasing a pair of stunning spectacles, prescription sunglasses or contact lenses before the end of the year. optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple Street, just up from the private hospital. For more information or for an eye test appointment please phone 5442 5555. www.optometryatcooroy.com.au.

Don’t be a weight loss failure statistic HEALTH experts estimate that between 9698% of dieters regain all the weight lost from dieting within two to three years and the faster the weight is lost, the faster it returns. One reason for failure is that within 24 to 48 hours of starting a calorie restricted diet, your metabolic rate is reduced by 15 to 30%. Also, much of our eating is done for reasons other than hunger. Any dietary changes need to be mindful of keeping the body fit and healthy and that is why you should look at getting dietary advice and an eating plan tailored to your needs rather than going on a “diet”. While most people talk about losing weight, what they actually want to achieve is a loss

of body fat. In fact, for successful long-term weight loss, the goal is to lose body fat while preserving muscle mass. A substantial increase in physical activity is essential to lose body fat and to keep it off over time. Weight loss should be approached as a long-term change in lifestyle that is comfortable and will be sustainable. One great way to ensure you get the most out of each exercise session is to team up with a personal trainer. Give Make A Difference Health & Fitness a call on 5442 6179 or visit their website on www.madhf.com.au – they can help with all aspects of your weight loss plan and teach you to incorporate it into your everyday life.

Kess Prior Joins the Hinternoosa Business

LONG-term owners of Hinternoosa Murray and Lyndal Brown have taken a partner into the business. Kess Prior, one of the Hinternoosa sales consultants, has taken the initiative of expanding her passion and involvement in the industry. It has been a natural progression for the Brown family to take the business to the next level. “Kess is a really strong salesperson who knows the market well,” Lyndal Brown said. “She understands the business and shares Murray’s passion for the industry. If you really love real estate then it comes through.” Murray and Lyndal

Brown have been running Hinternoosa as a family business for 23 years and believe this partnership will take the business to new heights of excellence. Bringing Kess into the business heralds a fresh new approach. The combination of experience and enthusiasm throughout the team will be a catalyst for further growth. The Hinternoosa team strives to deliver outstanding results while delivering superior service. This is evidenced by just being nominated as a finalist for the REIQ Medium Residential Agency of Year 2014. “We are experiencing new paradigms in this

industry and by embracing these changes we can get good results. Kess brings a range of management skills and business knowledge with her that have been built up in her career both here in Australia and overseas. “Our business would not have survived this long if we were not prepared to change. Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Mr Brown said Hinternoosa was built on family values and service. “You want to know who you are taking on as partner has the same ethics and morals. Open, honest and fair with a culture of generosity. We share the same ethos with Kess. She is committed to helping exceed our client’s expectations with excellent service and results” “We offer old-fashioned country service to a broad range in our community, from blocks of land for $150,000 to sales of $4million-plus prestige homes.” Kess Prior said the move into becoming a partner in the business

was a logical step to go forward. “I have never been one to sit on the sideline,” she said. “I want to grasp this opportunity with both hands.” Murray Brown and Kess Prior both spent part of their upbringing on the Darling Downs – at Tara and Toowoomba respectively. Having worked around the world, Ms Prior chose the Noosa hinterland as home after just one holiday. “I looked at Domain and decided that real estate was going to be my career. “I went back to Amsterdam and in 12 months did everything needed in to become an agent. That was four years ago. I have been living here, working here ever since. In that time I have seen the market turn full spectrum. I started at the time the GFC hit so I was coming into the industry when so many others were leaving. “I have built up a great base of clients and hope to service their needs more fully now that I am a partner in the business.”

COOROY’S rich farming heritage has been built up over generations of successful small crops and dairy operations. The pleasure of living in this community and enjoying our enviable climate with its high rainfall plus all the benefits of the thriving

country village atmosphere has made this a very attractive hot spot for lifestyle property enthusiasts. This 30 acre property only 5k’s (approx) along Cooroy Belli Creek Rd is a great find, and is being offered here for the 1st time in its current form with a

magnificent home and large work shed nestled in a very private and elevated position. Currently the land is being utilized for grazing and small crops thanks to the abundant and reliable water supply. The large diesel pump redirects water easily and efficiently to established irrigation. The master bedroom has a large ensuite with spa and walk in robe and opens onto the Eastern side of the home perfect for breakfast on the patio. Interestingly all of the 4 bedrooms are large as is the family bathroom.

This brick and Colourbond roofed home has an inviting entry foyer and covered portico entrance. The large tiled entertaining area on the Eastern side is an ideal spot for shady afternoon BBQ’s and get togethers overlooking rolling green hills. There is a giant 6 bay high roofed colourbond shed which will take plenty of machinery and toys. An older style studio near the Jacaranda lined driveway would make a fun teenagers or artists retreat. If you are looking for space, privacy,

views, close to town, with all important water and you like to feed native birds this property cannot be beaten. The epitome of modern country living, this attractive home exudes quality design and thoughtful layout. The 2002 built home is perfectly placed to take full advantage of the beautiful views and rising breezes. This very spacious and inviting 4 bedroom home offers a large formal lounge room and modern kitchen with combined open planned living room. Contact Paul Bielby Countryside Realty 0437 346 256

Amy sets Australian record

AMY Brice, a Year 6 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, has just set a national record in the 11 year old girls multi-event at the School Sport Australia National Track & Field Championships held in Brisbane on 23 and 24 November. Multi-event is a combined athletics event

consisting of a 100 metre sprint, shot put, long jump and 800 metre run, with points given for each part of the event and the competitor with the highest total number of points wins. The School Sport Australia National Track & Field Championships brings together around 700 athletes aged between 10 to 12 years from around Australia which equates to some tough competition. Aside from her national record in multisports, Amy also placed fourth in discus and second as part of the 4 x 100 metre relay team. A member of Little Athletics Noosa since she was five, Amy just loves track and field and would one day love to represent Australia at the Olympics. “I love competing and winning is an extra bonus that makes it feel like my hard work has paid off,” said Amy. Amy’s weekly training schedule consists of two nights training and one night’s competition, but it is no doubt that it is a combination of her natural talent and commitment to her sport which has seen her become such a wonderful athlete at such a young age. With the benefit of three dedicated and experienced coaches - Noosa Little Athletics Coach and local, Mick Hooper, trains Amy for track and for field events her father, Ash Brice, coaches her for the throwing events

(which include discus and shot put) while her mother, Rebecca Brice, coaches her for long jump – there is no doubt Amy will one day achieve her Olympic dream. According to Amy’s track coach, Mick Hooper, there is a big emphasis placed on quality training over quantity as they aim to keep it fun while fostering the love of the sport to ensure athletes like Amy continue to enjoy what they do. IMPACT Boxing has had a clean sweep at this year’s Qld State Titles last week end! All five fighters were crowned State Title winners in each of their divisions and will now take their place on the Qld team to compete in Perth next year for the Australian National titles. This will be the second National Titles trip for Payton Aird-Cardiff, Sam Cameron-Hands and Benny Cameron-Hands and joining them on their first trip will be Kayla Hardie and Cian Jones. “I could not be happier and more proud of these kids,” said trainer Mark Evans. “They have trained and fought hard all year in preparation for these State titles. To have all of them be crowned state title holders & gain selection into the Qld team is an awesome achievement. All five will take a couple of weeks off over Christmas to rest their mind and bodies and then early January we will knuckle down to some serious training as we prepare them for the Aussie titles! Hopefully we will return home to Cooroy with 5 new Australian Champions! “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued support as these kids strive to reach their goals. Your support is greatly appreciated. On behalf of Mel and myself and everyone at the Impact Boxing Academy we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!”

ONE of the great things about gymnastics is that it’s a universal sport enjoyed at all skill levels. The other great thing is we have a great gymnastics facility right here in Cooroy. Since the current Cooroy Gymnastics building was opened in December 1995, locals of all ages and skill level have made their way to Cooroy Sports Complex. But it’s not just for gymnasts. The club runs adult fitness classes, teen fitness classes as well as trampolining for those who wish to purely learn flips. Each term more than 280 gymnasts participate in Kindergym and

afternoon programs. The club also hosts special needs children from our local schools, allowing them to experience the gymnasium. Manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Geoff Edwards was delighted to hand over a $1,500 sponsorship cheque to Cooroy Gymnastics Club treasurer Craig Jones and secretary, Sally Chambers last week towards new equipment for the club. “We see it as a great fit for Cooroy Gymnastics and our Community Bank, who not only support us with an annual cheque, but sponsor our Gym-

nast of the Month program as well,” Craig said. “We’re thrilled to have them on board for 2014 and their sponsorship of the club has given us a lot to be excited about this year. Who knows, we may even have another Olympian on our hands? “We’re getting excited about 2014 and look forward to welcoming existing and new members to the club on January 18 and 25 from 9.00am to 12 noon on each of those dates for sign on days for 2014. It will be a free sign-on and everyone is welcome to check out our facilities and equipment. There will also be lots of activates planned on both dates. If we can keep helping our gymnasts’ dreams come true at any level we’re delighted,” Craig added. Those sentiments were echoed by Geoff. “Cooroy Gymnastics Club is made up of great people who volunteer a lot of their time and have

built their club from the ground up. The club looks great with its renovations completed and is filled with so many age groups just having fun. Our Cooroy Community Bank of Bendigo Bank sees our sponsorship as a great way to support

the club now and in the years ahead,” Geoff added. If you would like to know more about Cooroy Gymnastics Club, call 5442 5800 to find out about class times and what your local gymnastics club is all about!

NDSHS Touch finals results

COOROY’S own Super Fish Clinton Stanley along side of Yandina’s motorcyclist Chris Vermeulen were recently inducted into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame at the Sunshine Coast University. More than 100 people attended the induction ceremony, at which Russell Green gave a presentation honouring Clinton’s 20 years of outstanding State, National and International swimming achievements. Clinton has been a world champion across a range of swimming events, including his favourite event, the 1500m freestyle. He has represented Australia seven times. New Zealand (2001), South Africa (2004), Ireland (2006), Taiwan (2007), Portugal (2008), Taiwan (2010) and Italy in 2012 where he returned world champion for the 800m and 1500m freestyle. Clinton has broken 79 world records for swimmers with Down syndrome and since returning home from Italy has retired from International competition. Clinton was the 2013 Australian of the Year Queensland Award finalist and has also received an Outstanding Lifesaving Award. His love of swimming will continue as he trains and competes within Australia for Noosa Masters. Out of the water Clinton has worked part time for the past 19 years at Wimmer’s and is a volunteer life guard for Noosa Aquatic Centre and Sunshine Beach Surf Club. “Clinton is now where he belongs, featured along side the region’s most illustrious sporting talent in the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame.”

The Noosa District State High School touch football teams played in their respective grand finals last Saturday at Tewantin. The Year 8 boys won their game 6-4, but unfortunately, the Year 8 girls lost in a drop off 6-5 and the Year 9 boys went down 9-5.
