Community Christmas celebration Well the magical elves of Cooroy pulled it off again and delivered one of the most wonderful Christmas in Cooroy’s ever! Even with blistering 42 degree heat, the dedicated team of volunteers delivered an amazing celebration for our community. The community spirit was palpable and thousands crowded Maple Street to watch the Bendigo Bank Street Parade with about 40 floats decorated to the theme of “A Moment in Time”. The competition was scorching for Best Float with the winners being Wythes Real Estate with their Egyptian theme. Runners up were Cooroy Blue Light Disco, followed by Tadpoles and a special mention to new entrants Mary River Rattler. A crowd favourite was SPV accounting with their hilarious Titanic entry. Fred Back and Jacqualine Power were crowned The King & Queen of Christmas in Cooroy for raising funds independently to support the event. Shawn Justice won the best dressed in the Bentleys Great Santa Stroll which despite the punishing heat still managed to have a handful of Santas participate and raise $600 for the Leukaemia Foundation! The east side of town won the Belvedere News & Cooroy Computers East versus West Tug of War and Carol Christensen threw down the gauntlet to the west side challenging them to start preparing for 2020! All of the free activities were a big hit which couldn’t be possible without the amazing support of our local business sponsors. The entertainment was also top shelf and the Claptomaniacs kept the crowds entertained until the end of the evening. The fantastic raffle sponsored by Mower & ATV Solutions and MTD Australia raised over $6000 for the event and was won by Meredith Wright.

Meredith Wright, from Wright Cut Meats in Cooroy was the lucky winner of the Christmas in Cooroy raffle of the Rover zero Turn Mower. Dave, owner and operator of Mower and ATV Solutions in Cooroy, has been a big sponsor of Christmas in Cooroy in the 9 years since opening his business on Mary River Road, with the last 4 years donating major prizes including Rover Ride-ons. Meredith, who lives on 36 acres, was overjoyed by her win

Rotary raffle winner The Rotary Club of Cooroy presented Sergeant Ryan Hanlon, the winner of the camper trailer raffle, with his prize at the Eumundi Police Station. Ryan was planning a camping trip with his kids over the holidays. Now he has a wonderful new camper trailer. “Congratulations to Sergeant Ryan for winning the trailer generously donated to the Club by a local entrepreneur to raise money for the community,” said President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy, Warren O’Neill. “All proceeds will be given to local good causes to include our local Rural Fire Brigades who have done so much to protect us and our properties over the past months as well as a defibrillator for the Coastguard at Noosa.” Ryan tells us his first task on Monday morning, his first day of holidays, was to cancel the hire camping trailer he had booked for his holidays with his family including two young boys who will all no doubt have a wonderful time in their new toy.

“It is nice to know the trailer is so appreciated and will be used by someone who has great respect in the community,” added Warren.

news Wellington says Pardon’s out

COOROY RAG

Cr Frank Pardon will no longer continue in his role as a Noosa Councillor, following a guilty verdict on charges of indecent treatment of a child under 16 and maintaining a sexual relationship with a child. Under the Local Government Act, if Frank Pardon receives a custodial sentence he is automatically disqualified from his councillor position. “However, custodial sentence or not, I do not believe it is appropriate for Frank Pardon to continue his councillor role,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “I am deeply disturbed by the court verdict,” Cr Wellington said. “I extend my sympathies to the young woman, who had to go through this ordeal. No one should

have to endure such an experience.” “While these incidents occurred more than 25 years ago, and prior to Frank Pardon’s election as a councillor, no one can condone or accept such actions by an individual.” “As a father of a daughter, and grandfather to a granddaughter, my heart goes out to the young woman and her entire family.” Cr Wellington said. Cr Pardon will not be replaced, prior to the March 2020 elections. “In accordance with the Local Government Act 2009, a by-election is not required if a vacancy occurs less than 6 months before the scheduled election, the Mayor said. “Thus Cr Pardon’s position will remain vacant until filled at the March Local Government elections.”

Well, how amazing was Christmas in Cooroy this year? Our wonderful community event just seems to get better every year. It’s the eleventh year our Cooroy Community Bank branch has been a major sponsor and we love being part of it all. It’s just another way we continue give back to our community as you support us through our Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin Noosa Bendigo Bank branches. Christmas is a wonderful time, spending time with family and friends and giving gifts to others. Many homes are bursting at the seams with food, family and friends. But Christmas can also be a stressful time for families. Especially given the ongoing economic climate means a lot of families may be unable to find those extra dollars to participate in the celebration of Christmas. One way to plan ahead for the extra financial pressure it brings is to open up a Christmas Club account with us. A Christmas Club account is typically an interest-bearing passbook account with no or low fees, that you are able to deposit into during the year but can’t withdraw from until a set period. This set withdrawal period is usually November 1 to January 31, so you catch those post-Christmas sales. You can arrange a transfer from your savings account or even from your pay office into the Christmas Club account and that way it is like a forced savings. Set down a budget of how much you think you can put aside each pay day, it does not have to be large, but it does have to be a realistic amount because if you need to withdraw the funds a penalty fee will be applied to the account. Why not ask us about setting up a Christmas Club account and start early for next year’s celebrations? As many locals are now realising with our brand-new branch on Maple Street, we’re a

full-service bank and here for the long haul. We’re close, not closed! More importantly, it’s through our customers’ banking that we generate profits supporting our community - more than $700,000 so far. It’s why we want to give the hinterland a real say in its future and it’s why we believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. So, as you prepare for your Christmas, bank where the customer is relevant and connected to its community, and give us a try. If it’s about opening a Christmas Club account or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact our team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Have a beautiful Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! I look forward to sharing more columns with you in 2020.

COOROY RAG

From the desk of MP Marty Hunt As we end another year, I’d like to reflect on the positives for the year passed. It’s been two years since I was elected as your representative and there have been a few battles along the way. The thing that has made it easier though is your support. We have such a strong and proud community in Nicklin made up of pockets of smaller and unique areas. Chevallum, Palmwoods, Woombye, Mapleton, Dulong, Nambour, Yandina, Cooroy, Kenilworth and surrounding areas all having different needs and different characteristics. It is through meeting with local community advocacy groups, community organisations, sporting groups, schools and locals through my mobile offices that I’m able to listen to and act on your concerns. Community associations, petitions, emails and calls to my office from people wanting change helps me to advocate for what we need. So, thank you to all those who have taken the time to attend community meetings, advocate for your local area and take part in the political process. Together we have been able to finally get work started on the Nambour Hospital Redevelopment, plans developed for the new Nambour Police facility, a commitment of funding for the rail duplication and TMR planning process commenced for the Cooroy intersections. I’ve identified 36 priority community infrastructure projects moving forward that I will be advocating for next year and I want to get all of our state school classrooms airconditioned which the LNP has pledged

0447 477 302

to do if elected next October. But sometimes it the smaller wins that make all the difference in peoples’ lives - such as assisting people to get the health support they need when they appear to have fallen through the cracks in the system, assisting the elderly to navigate systems and processes they are not familiar with to achieve the outcomes they need, helping with any State Government frustrations the average person comes across from time to time, and sometimes just lending an ear to someone doing it tough. I was also pleased to be able to support over 25 community groups, sporting clubs and individuals through my Nicklin Heroes grants this year. Providing funding for smaller projects or for young people to attend representative sport that they might not otherwise be able to attend is one of the very rewarding parts of my job. We also had my inaugural Nicklin Community Awards to recognise over 50 of our community volunteers. With Seniors Week celebrations and many more community events it has been a big year. I look forward to 2020 and if you have any ideas for community priorities email them through to my office. On behalf of my wife and family we wish you all very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Marty

The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce held their Christmas party last week. It’s so fantastic to have so many amazing businesses and people involved with the Chamber making our community what it is... absolutely brilliant!

Just in time for Christmas, local author and antiques dealer Debra Palmen has released her second book. Called Fabulous Beasts & How to Collect Them, it draws on Debra’s qualifications as a social anthropologist and her considerable experience as an antiques dealer. Each chapter deals with a real or mythical animal, describing their fascinating social histories and then discussing the vintage and antique pieces associated with them. Debra outlines what’s valuable, what’s not and why. From dogs, cats, chickens and bees to dragons, mermaids and unicorns, Debra has produced a unique guide that’s entertaining and informative. If you want to buy one item, or start a whole collection, this book will help you avoid costly mistakes. And if you already own a few vintage pieces, wouldn’t it be wonderful to learn if they’re valuable?

Timmons are among the many who have recorded Christmas albums. It’s as if these old songs were just waiting for the chance to take off.” The group - David Bentley (piano), Andrew Shaw (acoustic bass), Nathan Goldman (drums) and Duncan Macqueen (percussion) - usually performs at jazz clubs in Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine coasts. David, Andrew, Nathan and Duncan have found the ambiance within Cooroy’s Butter factory Arts Centre conducive to music making. As David notes: “BFAC has everything going for it…where better to listen to music and immerse yourself in art while enjoying a glass of wine?”

The party vibe is in the air and Christmas is fast approaching ... here are some helpful hints from your LiveLife pharmacists to keep you feeling your best throughout the silly season: • Find time to RELAX and take some time out for you. You may even like to take a few moments a day to practice meditation of stressrelieving breathing techniques. • Stay active and remember to keep up your EXERCISE routine. Take advantage of those beautiful summer days and take a walk in the park, or down by the beach. • Stay HYDRATED and ensure you are drinking plenty of water, especially if you are indulging in some alcoholic Christmas cheer. Try to keep to no more than 1 alcoholic drink per hour.

• Remember to fit in your vegetables, fruit and whole-grains in between the yummy Christmas treats. NUTRITION is what keeps your body fuelled for the exciting day-to-day festivities. • Try to keep 7-8 hours of SLEEP in your daily routine • Consider SUPPLEMENTS to support your body during this busy time of the year: B-group vitamins – for energy and recovery after consuming alcohol; St Mary’s Thistle – to support the liver detoxification process; Multi-vitamins – to ensure you aren’t missing out of anything essential when you diet may be a little less balanced than usual; Probiotics – to keep your digestive health in optimal condition and support your immune system.

Letter to the Editor I am a volunteer driver and pick-up/delivery person for Katie Rose Cottage. On the last two Mondays, 2nd and 9th of December we have been called to remove “supposed” donations of furniture and other items which have been left at the rear of the shop also blocking other tenants’ access. On both occasions these had been left after hours with no contact with the staff as to whether they would be useful. None of this was of any use and so it cost our charity money to use the van, fuel etc, not to mention all of the volunteers’ time wasted when we could have been doing better

things for our community. We now have no option but to install security cameras at more expense and this will now be reported. We are very happy to collect any items you think you would like to donate and we can assess these to see if we can sell. All you need to do is contact our warehouse 0498 049 548. The very great majority of people who donate items are quite understanding if we cannot take certain things to sell. We very much appreciate all donations and thank our community for being so supportive, please keep giving. Paul Norton, Lake Macdonald

A Kind Christmas Wish For You A heartfelt message to our wonderful community written by Kyla, Maddie, Mack and Makayla …. “On behalf of The Kindness Club, we’d like to thank you for your support and kindness towards us and others this year. We wish you all a Christmas full of love, laughter and joy! We hope you have a great year ahead of you. Always keep kindness in your heart. Merry Christmas!”

Current Pomona Meals on Wheels President, Stephen Hilditch, David and Deidre Tietjen, with the 30 year plaque presented to PMOW by Queensland Meals on Wheels

Earlier this year Pomona Meals on Wheels celebrated its 30 th anniversary. Over the years the service, run by dedicated volunteers, has delivered thousands of meals to clients in Pomona, Cooroy, Cooran, Kin Kin, Eumundi, Federal, Traveston, Black Mountain, and Boreen Point. Our past President and Supervisor David

and Deidre Tietjen, along with David Lanfranco (who sadly passed away in August), and Jane Ford were the backbone of Pomona Meals on Wheels for many years. Meals on Wheels in Pomona was started in 1989 by Brenda Goody and Betty Maher. It initially operated from the Pomona Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB) and first meals were delivered on Monday 8 April. Eight recipients received a three course meal of soup, roast lamb, vegetables and dessert. It was quite an achievement since the QATB stove had only two of the three hotplates working and an oven door which did not close fully! Our service moved to the new kitchen in the Pomona Memorial Hall (our current home) on 19 December 1989. Our kitchen operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday cooking and delivering delicious, nutritionally balanced meals for short and long term clients. Our clients include: the elderly, people with disabilities and their carers, post-op and recuperating patients, people experiencing hardship, or who are struggling to cope with life’s demands, or are just too busy to prepare meals. Even if you are signed up with other service providers, you can still choose to order your meals through us. If you are still unsure if you can access Meals on Wheels, we can check for you. Our aim is to provide nourishment and regular contact to enable people to remain independent in their homes where they are happiest. For more information, visit our website https://mowp.org.au/ or contact the office on 5485 1777 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7am – 12 noon)

Open Letter to the Community of the Sunshine Coast from Katie Rose Cottage Hospice Hello. My name is John Gabrielson and I have the honour of being the CEO of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice (KRCH) a not for profit organisation who operate a nationally ‘accredited’ 3 bed hospice facility located in Doonan ‘Katie Rose’ provides remarkable end of life care for those with a terminal condition. This service is provided at no cost – our belief being that if we serve without expectation ‘good’ will be returned. This belief has been true and continues to be so. Our hospice is a beautiful place, a wonderful facility staffed by remarkable people (RNs, Carers and Hospice Support Volunteers) all of whom work together, along with doctors and counsellors, to provide extraordinary end of life care and support for our ‘guests’ (our patients), their families and friends. The hospice team are further supported by other volunteers in our Op Shops, Gardening teams, Fundraising teams and Media /Marketing teams. None of what we are doing would be possible without the contribution of over 280 volunteers lead by a very engaged Board. Of course none of the above occurs without the ‘wider community’. Everything achieved in our short history (just 3 years) has occurred due to community support. It started with the Warm Handshake Foundation donating the hospice facility in July 2017. As time passed more and more people, and organisations, have offered their support to us. Everything achieved up until September 2019 has been driven by people power, by our community. Thank-you to all who have helped us establish and prevail to date. We’ve still a long way to go and much to do. In September 2019 after much work we were fortunate to attract a 3-year part funding agreement with Queensland Health. We’re thankful to the Minister for Health for this support. As always though, we would be appreciative of more. Unfortunately, to date after much lobbying, the Federal Government have not offered any assistance or partnership. We will continue to lobby the Prime Minister, the Minister for Health and local Federal politicians and remain hopeful that they will show up and make a contribution to our much needed service in the very near future. To continue our service long term, we must continue to rely on the care and support of you - our incredible community – in the end you have got us this far and we hope for your continuing support. It is with great thanks that we trust support will be continued. We’d particularly encourage big business and community focussed philanthropic interests to connect with us. In the absence of Federal Government interest, business and philanthropy will help us prevail for many years to come. In closing, on behalf of the Board and the entire team, I wish to thank-you all for your support and belief. ‘Not for Profits’ would not exist without the love, care and belief of their communities. In turn, without the support of many ‘Not for Profits’ our community would be less rich, less able to care for those in need and perhaps devoid of some really important services provided by no other sector. Should you wish to offer support to our organisation please visit our website at; www.katierosecottage.org.au. or contact our team via admin@katierosecottage.org.au. If you would like to talk with me personally, please call on (07) 5471 1468 or email; johng@katierosecottage.org.au Sincerely, John Gabrielson - CEO

COOROY RAG A Rare Find

Position, position, position, the term has never been more relevant than in relation to this property. All the appeal of acreage living

with the town comforts right at your fingertips. This large, four bedroom family home features double cavity brick, high ceil-

ings with exposed timber beams and feature timber paneling. Generous sized living areas with a fabulous media or pool room that

A home among the grasstrees

adjoins the private outdoor entertaining area. Adjacent to the main home is one of the original structures on the property, currently being utilised for shedding and storage, its potential is endless. A fantastic rustic outdoor entertaining area, art studio or perhaps future accommodation. The property itself is set on 33 acres and has a mixture of cleared open pastured areas and native bush. The home is positioned almost at the highest point and grades down to a water course that runs through the middle of the property and feeds the large dam. The dam is quite picturesque and has a 1930’s diesel pump on it, which to me, looks like it

works as good today as it did back then. To complete the property there is good boundary fencing, small cattle yards, sealed driveway and access to town services if you desire. Acreage living right on the edge of town, no dirt roads, no dust, no running back and forth into town and being situated on the eastern side of town you are so close to Noosa. Please contact our agent Michael Robinson on 0431 865 616 from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland for more information or to arrange to view this property or drop in to see one of our friendly staff at 16a Maple Street, Cooroy or 8 Reserve Street, Pomona.

MOTOR TRADERS ASSN OF QLD

Well another year under the belt, and Russell Manning has taken out the club championship for 2019. Paul Fleming had a great day with plenty of fish but couldn’t claw back the lead he’d held most of the year, from Russell. It was a very close comp all year, with some very good fish caught. Our last fishing day was on the 1st December, when we also had our Toby Brown Cow Bell inter club competition with Yandina. 21 anglers in total turned up for a 5.30am start and weigh in was 11.00am. Always a top day with lots of fun and plenty of banter with ladies, juniors and men all trying to out fish each other. Congratulations go to Yandina, the 2019 champions ringing the bell for the 2nd year running with this being their 16 th win in total to Lake Macdonald’s 14. Yandina totals were 36 Bass, 1 Saratoga & 9 Cat fish. Total points 615. Ray, the Club President had the biggest Bass of the day 48 cm, mind you he lost an even bigger one trying to get it into his kayak. Gregg Eadie caught the second biggest Bass at

44cm. Nathan’s 51cm Saratoga was the biggest over all. Lake MacDonald totals were 56 Bass, 3 Yellow Belly. Total points 504. Tim was over the moon with his 3 Yellow Belly. The comp with everyone sharing a few drinks and more Pizzas than we could jump over. For the past 29 years the club’s role has been stocking Lake MacDonald, researching the Mary River Cod, working closely with the DPI, local Council, past and present water boards & FFSAQ. Also, working with the fish hatchery, improvements around the dam such as boat ramps, shelter sheds, jetties and numerous other projects. The first meeting for 2020 will be at the Saw & Mill, Thursday 30th January at 7pm . If you’d like to see what the club does, or would like to join, you’re welcome to come along, or contact President Peter Arch 0421511813 or Secretary Mick Geary 0408400735. From all our Club members, have a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and, as always, happy fishing.

Cooroy Golf Club – Family Golf Month

With school in recess and kids looking for entertainment, why not try a fun family golf day in the Noosa Hinterland and get them off their electronic devices. Cooroy Golf Club Family Golf Month specials include juniors under 14 years playing FREE when accompanied by a paying adult and children under 18 years $10. You are never too young to develop a passion for golf. Cooroy Golf Club offers junior coaching by PGA Professional, Cyril Trist for 10 - 16-year-olds every second Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30. Cooroy Golf Club recognises the need to bring young people into the sport, so they sponsor these classes. Coaching is free for both junior members and nonmembers. Participants learn the basics and more and can then try them out on the course with Cyril or their family. Cyril says several promising juniors in the class of 2019 regularly play with family and, the word is, the competitive spirit is starting to kick in. Learn, play, compete, enjoy with friends The coaching program and Family Golf

Month aim to promote the social and fun aspects of the sport, inspire a new generation of golfers and provide a great family experience. Speak to Cooroy Golf Club for more details – phone 07 5474 6258.

It’s a feat to win a Monthly Medal but to win a Medal of Medals that’s an achievement – congratulations Peter Piggott, winner of the Men’s Saturday 2019 Medal of Medals.

Masterplans now out for community feedback The future development and management of two key sports facilities is now open for community feedback. Two draft master plans have been developed for the Cooroy Sports Complex and Noosa District Sports Complex. Community Services Manager Alison Hamblin said the two documents look to the future trends in sport. “We have worked closely with the sporting clubs at each of the sites to get their thoughts on future plans and potential expansion,” she said. “Both draft documents are quite detailed and will be used to guide future investment, development and management of the popular sport and recreational complexes. “We encourage the community to have a look and let us know their thoughts,” she said. Key recommendations include improving the vehicle, pedestrian and cycle network at Noosa District Sports complex along with a re-developed multi-sport clubhouse and gymnastics expansion at Cooroy Sports Complex. Ms Hamblin said Council had a strong focus on maintaining sport and recreational facilities that encourage formal and informal physical activity. “The draft Master Plans capture critical information on local population trends, projections and potential participation numbers,” she said. The two draft master plans can be viewed on the YourSay Noosa website, with feedback open until Thursday January 2, 2020.
