Christmas in Cooroy - the best yet! IT seems like every year we think that Christmas in Cooroy just can’t get any better but somehow this year the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce & Rotary Club of Cooroy produced a Christmas event like no other! There is absolutely no argument or debate about this year being the best Christmas in Cooroy yet. Perfect weather, huge attendance, great volunteers, lots of happy smiles, amazing floats in the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, fantastic entertainment, stunning decorations around town and awesome fireworks! There are a host of winners to congratulate starting with Jude Spence, Di Gibbs and Peta Hempsall who took out the prizes in the Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy Photo Competition. All the entries still on display at the Butter Factory Arts Centre until 22 December and you can vote for your favourite in the People’s Choice. In the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, Cooroy State School took out the trophy for Best Float for the second year running with their Aussie school holiday inspired entry. The Cooroora Woodworkers’ billy tea entry and the Blue Light Disco dancing up a storm were runners up. A special mention has to go to Mower & ATV with their Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos and Holden Cars entry which has to be the biggest, loudest and longest entry we’ve even seen! The Wimmers East Versus West Traders Tug of War was a big hit with the east side traders winning the battle this year. Just like state of origin but even better! Jesse Shearer took out 1st prize in the Great Santa Race which had about 70 competitors and raised over $1,000 for Leukaemia Foundation creating a record for the most Santas competing and the most money raised! Winners of Cooroy App Snap are: 1st Prize is Julian Hollamby of Doonan; 2nd Prize is Cassandra Hilton of Eerwah Vale; 3rd Prize is Chantelle Over 60 people were entertained at the Bush Poet’s Breakfast at the Cooroy Hotel feasting on a huge breakfast and listening to some side splitting poetry. In the park, Smokin’ Mirrors played up a storm and entertained the crowds, while hundreds of kids visited Santa with some snow providing extra entertainment. And the fireworks sponsored by Wimmers Soft Drinks were just amazing!

100,000 cheers for Cooroy’s grand old dame THE Cooroy Memorial Hall has stood proudly on Maple Street for the best part of 90 years. Now, after a lot of discussion and even more paperwork, the ‘grand dame’ of Cooroy is set for a restoration project that will see the interior of the building refurbished, thanks in large part to a generous donation from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Pictured on Page 3 in front of the hall this

week, Community Projects manager, Sandy Bolton was joined by Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Fiona Hutchings and Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services (SCCFSL) chairman, Rick Cooper received a cheque for $100,000 towards the cost of the project. Mr. Cooper said the board decision to fund the project makes it the largest financial support the board has made to any community organisation or project to date.

“We proudly launched the Cooroy Community Bank branch through the help of community share holders in 2002 and celebrated our 10th birthday with the community only last month. Through the support of those who continue to do their banking with us, we’re able to support projects as exciting and meaningful as this one,” Mr. Cooper said.

Goodbye old year – hello Christmas Goodbye Old Year, to see you go is a little sad, The year has been so full of events, some good, while some were bad, Politics, regretfully, have featured, not a pleasant sight, With personalities getting nasty, disorder at its height. The politicians have put aside their dignity, and their manners, Neglecting their duty to govern, to be the nation’s planners, And then just to add to all the political drama, The LNP had an unsightly tiff with wealthy Mr Palmer. But some interesting things came to lighten up our life, To take our minds off the world’s unceasing strife, Royal visits by Charles and Camilla, Will and Katie too, Scandals in sport causing a great hulla-baloo’. The Olympics Games such a towering success, The whole world admiring the athletic prowess, But all those things are history now, time is lurching on, Let’s join the Christmas spirit, and put aside what’s been and gone. A time with family and friends, to remember what Christmas means, The coming of hope, the treasured holy Christmas scenes, To hear the often told story, of that miracle birth, To pray for good will to men, and peace upon this earth. We send our best wishes from all of us here, A bright Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, With family and friends have lots of fun, May the blessings of Christmas embrace everyone. COOROY RAG

Seasons Greetings from the team at Hinternoosa

Cedar Springs Acres from $199,000 (l-r) Rick Cooper, Sandy Bolton and Fiona Hutchings celebrate the news of Cooroy Community Bank's support of the Memorial Hall restoration project SCCFSL also manages Community Bank branches in Tewantin and Marcoola and Mr. Cooper went on to add that this project is the second major project to attract support following the Cooroy Community Forum held by the bank in November last year. “We were also proud to partner Sunshine Coast Council in purchasing the heat pump currently being installed at Cooroy Pool and see both of these projects as ones that will assist and develop with the Cooroy community in the long term. “It was certainly a special moment for Fiona and I to hand over the cheque to Sandy and her team to take the hall restoration project to the next level,” Mr. Cooper said. Since its establishment in 1926, Cooroy’s Memorial School of Arts and Hall has been the social hub of the district. Once described as Cooroy’s “greatest community asset”, many happy evenings were enjoyed at balls and dances, concerts, recitals, theatre productions and wedding re-

ceptions. Incorporated in the Memorial Hall is the former School of Arts, originally built for a Shire Hall of the Noosa Council. The hall restoration project encompasses essential physical works to the lovely “grand old dame”, which include a commercial kitchen, extra toilets, water harvesting, passive cooling and heating and solar power. The hall when reconfigured will provide a live facility for hospitality and tourism training, a Tourist Information Portal, function hire and events development, plus meeting and office facilities for community groups and business. Community Projects manager, Sandy Bolton said the project will eventually provide a functional, self sustainable hub addressing multiple community needs identified over many years. These include programs to share and link resources, provide training and employment, and increase the local and regional economy through multiplier based benefits.

“The ongoing benefits from this project for the community of Cooroy are enormous. The commitment from Bendigo Bank has not only been instrumental in ensuring the future of the hall, but also promoting the ability of Cooroy to construct its future through its own community and economic initiatives. On behalf of the community, Sandy can’t thank Rick, Fiona and the SCCFSL board for their incredible support and we look forward to hopefully celebrating with them and the rest of the community at the Cooroy Ball project fundraiser on February 16, 2013. It’s hoped that the evening will double as the opportunity to announce successful joint funding from the federal Regional Development Authority (RDA). Should we get the “thumbs up”, works are scheduled to commence in April 2013, and be completed by December 2013.” Ms. Bolton said. For further information about the Memorial Hall project or the Cooroy Ball, please contact Sandy on 0405 483 579.

BUS travel will step up a level this summer after the region’s first scheduled doubledecker arrived on the Coast just in time for the holidays. Sunshine Coast Council partnered with TransLink and Sunbus to launch the double-decker at Alexandra Headland today as an addition to the Sunbus fleet over summer. “The double-decker is a unique experience for locals and visitors to the region – it’s also a modern and sustainable way to travel, and the views from the top deck are great,” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said. “This bus has been manufactured in Queensland and represents world-class design and functionality when it comes to bus transport – we’re encouraging people to make the most of the double-decker during the next couple of months, particularly over the busy festive season.” The double-decker will run from Monday 3 December until 1 February 2013, operating every day on various Sunbus service routes from Caloundra to Noosa. Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the double-decker was a fun way to travel and hopes it will boost public transport use when the region’s roads

are busiest. “We’re delighted to have this bus on the Sunshine Coast – hopefully while here it will grab people’s attention and encourage new users onto our public transport network, perhaps even for the first time,” he said. “The bus is state-of-the-art and carries a hefty 96 passengers, which could mean fewer cars on our roads helping to reduce traffic congestion and pollution during our busier summer period. “There are only two double-decker buses of this kind in Australia and this is the first time we’ve had one as part of our local service - it’s great to be able to offer this experience to the community. “People can also catch the double-decker for free during council’s Free Holiday Buses program, which is on again from Boxing Day to 6 January.” The bus meets world-class Euro 5 Vehicle Emission Standards, and offers modern technology including a video monitor on the lower floor showing seat availability on the top deck. For more information on the double-decker bus visit council’s website or for services and travel times go to the Sunbus website.

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUETS to the businesses and people of Cooroy who should be so proud of themselves. Christmas in Cooroy was absolutely amazing! The effort that they all put in was terrific. I stood in the huge crowd and I felt so proud of our town. I doubt any town in Australia would have done better. Well done Cooroy. Yvonne Pattinson BRICKBATS to the narrow minded perpetual whingers of Garnet Street regarding traffic movements. Just maybe they should be a little more circumspect and think of the town as a whole. In case they are not aware, local trucks still travel Maple Street during the day. So much for the half pregnant sign at the clocktower roundabout. Maybe they need to look at the twice daily gridlocks when 25 school buses deliver and take home about half the high school population. Do you hear the many residents affected by this screaming about the noise and the diesel fumes filtering in to Eden for the patients to suffer? Folks if you don’t like the situation, just shuffle off somewhere else and get a life. Cooroy is a bloody good town! BOUQUET and congratulations to Trysh Braithwaite from Blue Care on receiving a ‘Certificate of Commendation’ from SES Cooroy for saving a man in the Noosa River. Trysh was with the SES for eight years and did a great job. BOUQUETS to all the wonderful teachers departing Cooroy Primary School this week. You will be missed ever so much. Best of luck. BOUQUETS to Bruce Smith from Caloundra Shire Council for all the help with the C-Vivor garden beds in Pomona. BOUQUET to Principal Mick Byrne, teachers and staff at Pomona State School for providing a wonderful learning environment and a successful 2012! BRICKBAT to the ute driver who ran off the road at the T-Intersection on Black Mountain Road. You left your rubbish and killed a tree. Thanks to the locals who cleaned up. BOUQUET and congratulations to Libby and Don Pigdon who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Tuesday December 11. The couple celebrated at Fire & Ice. BOUQUETS to all the readers, advertisers, contributers, deliverers, rollers, committee members and friends of the Cooroy Rag. And a special thank you to Rod for driving us in his 1939 Chev in the Xmas Parade. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year ~ from the Staff at the Cooroy Rag Newspaper. news Win up to $1000 off your rates bill SUNSHINE Coast ratepayers have the chance to win up to $1000 off their January rates bill just by signing up to receive their rates notice by email. Finance and Water Portfolio Councillor, Chris Thompson, said the $1000 prize incentive is the first step in a campaign to move with the times and offer ratepayers the option to receive their rates notices electronically. Ratepayers can then use council’s website to pay before the due date, providing both convenience for the ratepayer and cost reductions for council. “It costs council a significant amount of money to print and then mail rates notices out to ratepayers using traditional postal services,” Cr Thompson said. “Moving to an online environment is not only financially and environmentally cost effective, but also means ratepayers can receive their notices wherever they are, anywhere in the world and arrange payment to

avoid missing the discount period. “I encourage ratepayers to sign up before Friday 4 January to be in the draw to win up to $1000 off their rates bill.” To be in the draw simply visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and sign up for emailed rates by 4 January 2013. Ratepayers will need to include their BPay Reference Number from their last rates bill. While ratepayers are online they are also encouraged to sign up to MyCouncil – council’s online services site - and start to do business with council online – anytime, anywhere. MyCouncil allows customers to track their council business activities from anywhere in the world, at any time of the day. The Win up to $1000 off your rates incentive will be drawn on 15 January and the winner announced on council’s website and notified by email.

Nominate your Aussie hero before it’s too late NOMINATIONS for the 2013 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards close on 28 December so don’t miss the chance to recognise and celebrate inspiring individuals, organisations and groups. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards provide an opportunity to nominate people who have made a contribution to the region and publicly recognise and honour those achievements. “These Awards encourage all of us to look in our own backyard for the people and the organisations we know work hard, and usually without fanfare, to make the Sunshine Coast a better place,” he said. “These awards acknowledge the unsung heroes, the people who make a difference to our region – we all know someone like that and it

is important to nominate them so that as a community we acknowledge and celebrate their contributions. “I encourage you to take the time and to make the effort to nominate a local Aussie hero before 28 December for the 2013 Australia Day Awards.” Awards will be presented in the following categories: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Senior Citizen of the Year; Community; Creative; Environment; Sport and Recreation. news Keeping your costs down this Christmas Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WORKING in a bank we hear from many of our customers about the costs associated with Christmas. People tend to start commenting about it in September and can be still analysing it in February. People worry about how they are going to afford presents and social activities. They also stress about how long it will take them to pay it all off the following year. Here are some tips to get your wallet through the festive season: 1. Where possible try to utilise a Christmas Club type account and save regularly to it throughout the year. $40 per week over a year will give you over $2,000. 2. Make a list of everyone you need to buy for, allocating amounts to each person. This will give you an idea of how much it should

all cost in advance. If the total is too much you can make present idea adjustments before you start buying. 3. Do your research regarding your planned purchase. Shop around to compare prices and quality. If it’s too expensive come up with another gift idea. 4. Give yourself plenty of time. Impulse buying and buying at the last minute leads to cost blow outs. 5. Try to avoid the frantically busy times at the shops. Too many people around leads to quick decisions they can prove expensive. Shops are often quiet first thing in the morning and later in the evening. 6. Some people start their Christmas shopping for the following year in the sales. Items are often significantly cheaper. Put them in the cupboard for next year. 7. Where possible try to leave the credit card at home and shop

with cash or debit card. For two reasons (i) when you are spending money straight out of your account or cash you are less likely to spend too much. (ii) Credit card purchases are fine provided you are able to pay them back quickly. They can however be costly if need several months to pay it back. 8. Be careful about you grocery shopping. These days the supermarkets and bottle shops are only shut for two days. There is no need to buy up big. So much tends to get wasted and thrown out

anyway. The bottom line is that Christmas tends to be our most expensive time of the year and whatever little things we can do to manage the cost of it the better. Best wishes to everyone for a happy and safe festive season. If you have any questions about your banking or starting a savings plan for next Christmas, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Fifth straight dividend for Community Bank share holders IT’S been said that you can’t run a successful business in an unsuccessful community. That seems to be the ultimate compliment paid to some of our Sunshine Coast communities, because whilst some of the world continues to work through its ongoing economic challenges it’s a far different story for investors in three of the coast’s Community Bank branches. In fact it’s developed into an ongoing celebration of a home-grown Sunshine Coast success story. Nearly 800 share holders, who have supported the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches since their inception (with the Cooroy Community Bank Branch opening in 2002) will now receive their fifth dividend in as many years. Rick Cooper, Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL),who manage Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches said shareholders will each receive a share of the

$153,381.42 the total dividend, based on 9.0 cents per share of 1,704,238 fully franked shares once the dividend is issued on 21 December. “This will be a lovely Christmas present for the company’s investors. The result is a culmination of a lot of hard work and local support from the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin and surrounding communities. As we continue to say, bank with us and everybody benefits,” Mr. Cooper shared. “The directors of our Community Bank Company have decided the dividend is a fair reward to all the shareholders who initially funded the establishment of the branches and who have been patiently watching their development. It’s another great result for our share holders and our SCCFSL board, branch managers and staff are very proud of our continuing work in our communities. Without share holders’ support, our branches simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr. Cooper added. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager,

L-R: SCCFSL directors Rick Cooper and Len Daddow are joined by Cooroy and Tewantin branch managers Fiona Hutchings and Wayne Hoens to celebrate Fiona Hutchings said the shareholders won’t be the only locals to benefit from the fifth dividend. “The company’s remaining profits are being channelled back into the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin communities via a range of donations and sponsorships including a university scholarship for a Noosa District State High School student in 2013,

vehicles to RSPCA shelter and the heralded Street Reach program, a new radio room for Coastguard Noosa, a hall restoration project for Cooroy Memorial Hall and a streetscape project in the new Marcoola town centre. They also continue to be a major sponsor of the Street Parade during the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. By 30 June 2013, the total funds given

back to communities will have exceeded $1.1 million. “In coming months the board will continue its program of community grants that will release further funds to assist with a wide range of projects. We’re really proud to be involved with a bank that’s giving locals a real say in the shaping of their own communities,” Ms. Hutchings said.

Register to have your say and help council shape your community SUNSHINE Coast Council invites locals to have a say in shaping future projects affecting the community and the region. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said from time to time council invites the community to provide online feedback to assist with its decision-making process. “The feedback

can range from the community receiving updates on council projects, to being consulted, or actively becoming involved in public engagement opportunities,” said Cr McKay. “Council recognises community engagement creates a great opportunity for an ongoing conversation with locals and plays an

important role in shaping our future. “Engagement with the community does not replace council’s decision-making responsibility, instead it allows the community to have a say and enhance our decisions. “It is easy for community members to register their interest and become involved. “You can visit coun-

cil’s website today and register your name to take part in future discussions. “Once you register, council staff or survey companies appointed by council may contact you to take part in surveys about projects or programs, to help create a sustainable region.” Registering on council’s Community En-

gagement Register is a quick and easy way for people to provide a response to economic, environmental and community issues. All personal details will remain confidential. If you are interested in being included on council’s Community Engagement Register please visit council’s website to sign up.

Cooroy Community Gardens site approved FOR many months the Cooroy Community Gardens group have been working tirelessly with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council toward approval of a proposed new garden site in Emerald Street, next to the Badminton Hall. Approval has now been given and the group’s vision for the site as a place that inspires community celebration of organic food, creativity, health and happiness, can now be realised. CCG’s group President, Phil McManus explained that that “our aim is to establish and maintain gardens which will be a place for local people to meet together to learn and share skills in growing and enjoying organic food and to share the passion for living and consuming in a sustainable manner.” The Cooroy Community Gardens group are very appreciative of the continued support of local people and businesses both at the pre-

vious site, behind the Cooroy Library and throughout the application phases for the new site. “We are very grateful for the consistent support given to us by businesses such as Bonnell Bros; Mitre 10; Sauers Produce, Cooroy Optometry and the Cooroy Rag, and look forward to establishing future partnerships with local businesses and restaurants as we produce good quality organic produce for the community and create a peaceful space for all to enjoy” said Phil.

Whilst there is much work to be done to transform the vacant block in the middle of town into beautiful healthy gardens, the dedication and enthusiasm of the committee, other volunteers and supporters will ensure this space is transformed for the benefit of the whole community. For further information about the proposed gardens and how you can help or become involved, email: cooroy communitygardens@ hotmail.com or call Phil McManus on 0428 547 499.

JUST a quick note to all the incredible people, who invited me along to Christmas in Cooroy. It was great to see so many happy children. What a great town you have and the work put in by all involved in your celebration needs to be applauded. The day was the highlight of my world tour. Your beautiful tree stands out for miles from my sleigh and the town looks a treat. Many thanks from Santa and Mrs Claus; we hope you all have a Safe and Merry Christmas.

Super – in it for the long term SUPERANNUATION is specifically designed to help you save and invest for your retirement. It’s all about helping you take control of your own retirement, rather than rely on the age pension. It’s your money! When you first start in the workforce, it’s easy to dismiss super as money you can’t access or ‘lost’ money. It’s out of sight, out of mind. After all, retirement is a lifetime away. And you probably have more pressing concerns, like saving for your overseas trip, paying off uni fees and organising the weekend get-together. But fast forward a few years and the picture can be quite different. For many people, super becomes their primary retirement savings vehicle, thanks to the regular super guarantee (SG) payments their employer makes. Since being introduced in 1992, SG payments have gradually become a part of our working lives. The 9% SG payments are set to increase to 12% over the next seven years to help Australia’s ageing population save more for their retirement. A view to retirement: But despite the SG increase, Australians are becoming less prepared for retirement. The latest AMP Retirement Adequacy Index shows the average worker can expect to retire on just under $49,000 per year – the lowest level since the global financial crisis began in 2007. After five years of market uncertainty, it’s understandable that many Australians are cautious of putting extra money into super. But you don’t have to spin the roulette wheel. There are plenty of less risky ways to invest your money in super, including term deposits. And super remains a tax-effective way of saving for retirement. Super is tax-effective: Money in super is taxed differently to your other investments. It’s designed to reward you for investing for the long term – when you put money in,

while you’re earning investment returns and when you take money out, in retirement. For instance, pre-tax (concessional) contributions you make to your super up to $25,000 per year and investment earnings on super are taxed at a maximum rate of 15%, which is lower than most people’s marginal tax rate. And when you withdraw super money after age 60, the withdrawal is tax free …and offers a wide range of investments Super providers offer a variety of investment options, which may be suitable depending on where you are in your life. Conservative funds typically invest more in low-risk assets that may deliver more consistent returns. Balanced funds generally attempt to strike a balance between risk and return. Growth funds typically invest more in high-growth assets with more risk of volatility. And there are plenty more options for investors keen to exercise more control. Platforms give you access to managed funds, shares, term deposits and exchangetraded funds. And an increasing number of Australians are going DIY – in fact, as at 30 June 2012, self-managed super funds held the largest proportion of super assets accounting for 31.3% of total super assets. However, while different investments have different risk and return strategies, you should remember that generally, investments are subject to investment risk, which means that your investment and investment returns are not guaranteed. You may experience negative returns, and future returns may differ from past returns. What sort of investor are you? Getting the right investment mix can really make a difference. You’ll need to think about: When you want to retire; how much you’ll need to enjoy a comfortable retirement; how much risk you’re prepared to take on. Generally, younger investors are more com-

fortable with risk to achieve higher returns, while older investors are more concerned with protecting their assets. New Year – new plan The New Year could be the perfect time to put a plan in place to boost your super. ACCORDING to Elona Bosboom from Cooroy Car Parts moving from Brisbane to Cooroy ten years ago was the best thing they ever did. Elona and her late husband, Ken, previously had a mechanical workshop in Brisbane. Ken was a mechanic and Elona worked in spare parts – talk about a match made in heaven! From the time they first met they started working together so buying a spare parts shop in this beautiful part of the world felt like the right thing to do – and it was! Elona and Ken already had a strong connection with the area one of their two daughters has lived in Cooroy for the last eighteen years and runs Cooroy Computers. So in 1996 they decided to build a house up on Black Mountain Range Road and then, when the Cooroy Car Parts business came up for sale in 2002, they leapt at the opportunity. Since then the business has done well and they have managed to expand a lot. One only has to walk into the shop to see the extensive range of parts in stock – not to mention the easy-going, friendly repartee that Elona enjoys with her customers. Of course the business was affected by the GFC but it was another far more tragic event that would really rock Elona’s world. In 2008 she lost Ken suddenly to a brain tumour. He was only forty nine years old.Elona says the support she received from the community during this difficult period was “truly amazing”. The way the community rallied around (with food and all manner of assistance) was confirmation to her that they could not have chosen a better place to live and work. With this support and the help of her two loyal staffmembers she has managed to soldier on with the business. And then last year Elona was faced with a challenge of an entirely

different nature. The first sign was a tiny piece of mud protruding from a crack in one of the tiles in her shower. This led to a closer inspection of the adjoining room (the laundry) and it was at the back of her linen closet that she started to see some termite damage. However, it wasn’t until the whole wall was opened up that they discovered a massive nest of termites inside. “It was shocking to see how much damage had been done,” says Elona. “I cried!” Being such a huge nest her major concern was that the whole structure of her house had been compromised. A call to her insurance company provided little comfort. They said they would cover the water damage but not the termite damage! Elona then contacted Cooroy Pest Control. “They were very professional and helpful – and they could understand my stress!” she says. After assessing the damage inside the house they set about locating the queen’s nest. This was discovered in a dead tree not too far from the house. The challenge now was to not only kill all the termites but to make sure they didn’t return! The “bait” (termite poison) was placed in the laundry wall, at the site of the queen’s nest and in various positions around the perimeter of the property. This not only killed the termites it also meant that any other termites would be attracted to the outside bait sites

rather than venturing back to the house. Cooroy Pest Control also come back once every two months to check the bait sites which Elona finds reassuring. “At least I feel like I’m protected now,” she says. According to Elona it could have been a lot worse. “The termites could have got into the roof area,” she says. “And that could have seriously affected the value of my house.” She urges residents in this area to be on their guard and act sooner rather than later. She has been told that this whole area is very prone to termites and the ones that got into her house were a particularly aggressive type. “I would suggest that people in this area get their houses checked out,” says Elona. “In the long run it could save them a lot of heartache.”Sounds like wise words from a lady who has already had her fair share of heartache. For termite inspection and control phone Cooroy Pest Control on 5472 0141.

Grand old dame graces street parade

• Wedding Ceremonies • Master of Ceremonies • Commitment Ceremonies • Life Celebrations • Funerals

THE wonderful old Rolls Royce that was seen in the Christmas in Cooroy parade for Lakeridge Health and Beauty is owned by local resident Terry Lister. Terry has been restoring cars in this area for many years, and has restored a number of classics. Some may also know him for repairing their Jag as he previously had Lister Jaguar. In

2003, after successfully running that business for 14 years, he sold the business and semi retired. His love of machinery, especially old English cars is close to heart. Whilst surfing the net one day he found an old gold Rolls Royce. With some spare time on his hands he decided to take his wife to Sydney and check out the car. Having a restored Rolls Royce on his CV was appealing. The photographer who owned it for the bling effect only was ready

to move it on. Who on earth would want a worn out Gold Roller? Terry of course! Armed with a roll of duct tape and a bottle of radiator water he bought the car and headed back to Cooroy. “The car never missed a beat; it was already making a place in our hearts,” said Terry. After hours and hours of dedicated work Terry stripped the car to bare metal. Ready for the paintwork he discovered the car had

previously been patched, bogged and resprayed by a not so professional spraypainter. To hide lots of rust the metal patches he and his painter found were actually patched by old large baked bean cans. “After she was properly repaired there was deliberation over what colour the car should be, as we couldn`t keep her gold,” said Terry. “She`s a Silver Shadow so it was appropriate that she should be painted silver.” Paint, new

windscreen, upholstery, lots of original parts imported from England, including the new rims and tyres, and many many hours of sweat, cursing and love has gone into restoring this beautiful car. “Unfortunately I haven’t had time to rebuild the engine yet, so I apologize for the smoke that emanated from her after the engine became too hot from idling around the streets in the parade. Even so she loved the exercise she got at Cooroy`s Christmas Parade,” said Terry.

COOROY Communtiy Kindergarten has ended the year as it started – a little washed out! Torrents of flood water passed through the Kindy on Thursday evening, 6 December with a burst mains water pipe outside the boundary. Kindy staff and committee were alerted to the problem late Thusday evening, but there was little they could do to redirect water raging through the property. With the flow of water not stopped until Friday morning around 9am, parents and children were advised it was unsafe and we were unable to operate under these conditions. Kindergarten Director, Diana Markovits said “This is a disappointing finish to our year but relieved as damage was not as extensive as it could have been. I am also disappointed for the group of children who were to attend as it was their last day before the concert and unfortunately will now not be able to carry out rehearsals, which should make for an interesting time at their concert day next week.” We must thank the Cooroy Police for their attendance and Unity Water for their prompt attention and help with the clean up. The concern and offers of help from nieghbouring shopkeepers, the community and in particular the high school students who knocked on our door was a testament to the spirit in this wonderful community.

THE Cooroy Horse and Pony Club had had a tumultuous 2012. We were badly damaged by the floods of February which left the clubhouse destroyed and our grounds unusable. With the help of a disaster grant from the Department of Sport and Rec, we were able to get our grounds back into good condition. East Coast apprentices repaired our clubhouse and our insurance covered some of what was left. When everything was almost back to normal, we had a spate of breakins. This resulted in smashed windows, stolen food and drinks and the added expense of new windows and installing security screens. Nonetheless, we managed to have a great year, thanks to our small but wonderful community of members and volunteers. Without them we would not have had such a successful gymkhana. Everyone was there helping and we am so proud of them. A big thanks to Ian Thompson, who was always there with a helping hand no matter what the job. To top it off Joannie Boyce, our perpetual member, was there to present the trophies. We had a fun breakup day and are now waiting for next year to do it all again.

EACH year, Cooroy State School offers students the opportunity to compete in a performing arts talent quest, “Cooroy’s Got Talent.” Students from Prep to Year 7 were invited to audition in groups or as individuals to showcase their talents in dance, singing, acrobatics, and comedy, all of which clearly portrayed the “X” factor! The talent displayed by over 60 stu-

dents who entered the competition was fantastic and made the task of selecting finalists a difficult one for the judges. The competition provides a great avenue for students who display skill in these areas and final positions are hotly contested. Well done to all students who entered the competition and congratulations to the finalists! Pictured are the finalists of Cooroy’s Got Talent 2012.

Student heads to Gallipoli YEAR 9 Noosa District State High School student Jack Graham is one of the five Queensland high school students who will travel to Gallipoli and the Western Front for Anzac Day next year, as a winner of the inaugural Premier’s Anzac Prize. Jack’s involvement in the Australian Army Cadets, career aspirations and family’s Defence Force heritage spurred him to enter the Premier’s Anzac Prize Competition. Queensland Premier Campbell Newman congratulated the students on this achievement. “It is wonderful to see so many young Queenslanders who are proud of our Anzac traditions and are eager to learn more about the sacrifices made by our past and present military forces,” Mr Newman said. Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the selection panel was chaired by Mr Newman and included three serving members of the Australian Defence Force, two RSL Branch Presidents and an Education Queensland representative. Jack would like to study mechanical engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy and complete officer training at the Royal Military College. John Graham, Jack’s father, has been a serving member of the Army Reserve for 18 years and was deployed to the Solomon Islands in 2008. Jack’s grandfather served for 20 years in the RAAF and two ancestors, LT Wynnum Groom Hennessey and PTE Bert Hansen were killed on the Western Front while serving with the Australian Imperial Force. Jack will be accompanied on his Anzac Day journey by two teacher chaperones and will report back to Noosa High on his experiences.

Fascinating facts

YEAR 10 SOSE Noosa District State High school students delivered interesting seminars on secret societies this week. The SOSE students have spent this term researching and “uncovering” fascinating and controversial facts on secret societies such as the Ku Klux Klan, Skull and Bones, Scientology, the Illunminati and outlaw bikie gangs. Assessment for the term involved producing a feature article, which took a position on the values, attitudes and beliefs of the chosen secret societies; the collation of sources in a research booklet; and a seminar presentation to class where the students reported on their findings and the validity of their sources. The Year 10’s conducted very thorough research and were able to critically analyse the sources of information utilised for the assessment, proving that they are ready for the challenges of Senior SOSE and history. Teachers Mr Sprecker and Miss Muir were impressed with the students’ work and their keen, inquiring nature. The skills developed in Year 10 SOSE, provide the foundations and “building blocks” for senior school. “The class worked well on all elements of the assessment. It has been wonderful to see how much the students’ ability to research and analyse effectively has improved since the beginning of the semester,” Miss Muir said. Interesting facts discovered by the students this term: - In the mid-sixties, the Church of Scientology was banned in Australia based on a government report that the cult relied heavily on command hypnosis. - The Ku Klux Klan adopted their name from the Greek word, ‘kuklos’, which means circle. - Skull and Bones prominent alumni are former Presidents George H. W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush; Henry Stimson, U.S. Secretary of War (19401945); and United States Secretary of Defence, Robert A. Lovett, who directed the Korean War. - Symbols the Illuminati have worshiped are on the back of the American dollar bill, such as the “all-seeing eye” and the motto, “novus ordo seclorum,” which translates to, “A new order of the ages. - The Comanchero bikie gang call themselves the ‘’1 per centres’’, as they are a fringe minority of motorcycle riders that will never be part of mainstream society.

Space challenge 30 Year 8 Noosa District State High School students attended the 2012 Space Challenge at the University of the Sunshine Coast last week. The 30 students were selected by their teachers to attend for their aptitude and keen interest in the sciences and their exemplarily effort and behaviour marks. Students were mentored by scientists, engineers, professors and teachers, they learnt about current space missions and were able to utilise and experience new technology and equipment used in space simulations. The students experienced space mission simulations, which included drone flight and landings, robotics challenges and the building and launch of a rocket. The students worked in teams of three on an allocated mission designed to allow the participants to better understand the challenges that space engineers and scientists face. Noosa District State High School competed against teams from other schools including Bundaberg, Southport, Springwoods and Murgon State High Schools. Noosa District State High School did not win any prizes for the team challenges, and unfortunately, due to a mishap with a rocket landing, a small grass fire was started by the Noosa team. The fire was quickly extinguished by a security guard in a golf buggy and the request for bonus points for the fire from the Noosa High students was knocked back. Other schools lost points for landing rock-

ets in a construction site. Teachers from visiting schools and university staff commended the students from Noosa High for their outstanding behaviour and effort on the day. Noosa High teachers Marg McGrath and Brigid Muir were very pleased and proud of their students and the way in which they conducted themselves with particularly challenging tasks. “They really threw themselves into each task and saw it through to completion,” Ms McGrath said. Certificates were presented to the students who attended the Space Challenge at the Year 8 & 9 Formal Parade.

Dancer to compete in Japan

YEAR 11 Noosa District State High School student Jesse Gale competed as a part of his hip hop crew, Checkmate, at the national finals of World Supremacy Battlegrounds at Sydney Olympic Park and was awarded the bronze medal. Checkmate competed against 24 other crews at the nationals and they will now go on to compete in the Internationals held in Japan where they will ”dance off” against crews from Asian regional countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia as well as New Zealand, next year. Top crews from the Internationals will then have the right to participate in the World Finals. Checkmate will also represent Queensland in the Showcase Dance Championships at Jupiter’s Gold Coast in January 2013, and if they place well, they will have the opportunity to compete in the USA. Jesse’s crew have also won the Senior Secondary Hip Hop Category at the Rumble Dance Competition in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast Eisteddfod and the Noosa Eisteddfod. Checkmate train, rehearse and hone their craft at Sole Studios, Noosa. The Sole Studios Open Hip Hop Award was presented to Jesse at their end of year concert. Noosa District State High School staff and community all wish Jesse and his crew much success in what is looking to be a very exciting 2013. Cooroy Rag, December 19, 2012 - Page 17

Happy Campers THE Sunshine Coast Chapter of the Campervan Motor Home Club of Australia, The Rainbow Lorikeets parked up in Cooroy last week. The campers come from all over the Sunshine Coast. They’re all solo travellers and get together every month at a different location. They help each other set up camp, enjoy disc bowls, card games including bush rummie and a good laugh. While in Cooroy for the week the campers enjoyed the hospitality of the Cooroy Car Club facilities and sampled some of our local eateries. All were most impressed with our town. CHRISTMAS in Cooroy is getting bigger and better every year and our members are an integral part of this setting up, and manning, the road closures for the Santa Race, the parade of floats, and to a lesser extent the area around Apex Park for the festivities going into the night. This year saw even more floats and vehicles, and at long last we were able to enter a vehicle. We have wanted to do this for many years, but as we

need about 19 people to man the road closures and barriers, never have anyone spare to drive a vehicle. The SES Willy’s Jeep, which was the original Fire vehicle in the Noosa area, is brought out on occasion to participate in events and this year, three of our members spent quite a number of hours getting it ready mechanically for its big outing. Prior to going out to take up their positions, a number of our members were busy decorating

the vehicle and it looked just great. We are about to undergo some major changes in our SES. Currently there are three SES Units on the Sunshine Coast, each with four groups. Our Unit has Cooroy, Pomona, Boreen Pt and Tewantin. Subsequent to the Flood Commission Report, a recommendation was made that all Councils have only one SES Unit reporting, and as a result our Region is now going from three to two Units, which means that as

from early in the new year, Nambour and Coolum will be joining our North Unit. This new structure will no doubt bring some challenges particularly given the geographical area we will be covering, but as usual we will be working together to make the transition as smooth as possible, with minimal impact on our community. During the ferocious storm in Cooroy earlier this year, we were ably assisted by Nambour and Coolum groups, so no doubt our

good working relationship will translate to more support to our community. We are always looking for new members and the next intake will be early next year, in February 2013. Railway sleepers get a second-life in Mary Valley THEY assay one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and the Valley Rattler can attest to this with Queensland Rail playing a vital part. Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP said Queensland Rail will provide a small supply of timber sleepers to the Mary Valley Heritage Railway to assist in the maintenance of its track. “I am proud to announce the assistance of Queensland Rail in helping the Rattler remain in operation,” Mr Gibson said. “This service plays a vital role in the local tourism industry of the Gympie area, bringing a lot of people out here and contributing greatly to the local economy.” “The Mary Valley Heritage Railway is

working hard to complete major upgrades to allow the Rattler to commence operating again.” Acting Chief Executive Officer Jim Benstead said as part of an agreement between Queensland Rail and the MVHR, up to 240 timber sleepers lying dormant in a freight yard at Winton will be pulled up and relocated to Gympie this month. “Thanks to the availability of these sleepers, Queensland Rail is in a position to lend a hand to rebuild this tourism icon – bringing the Valley Rattler one step closer to recommencing operations,” Mr Benstead said. “I would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution of DENPAQ Pty Ltd,

who is transporting the sleepers from Winton to Gympie at no charge.” MVHR General Manager, Jim Walker said they were pleased Queensland Rail was able to help provide a critical ingredient towards resuming operations. “Getting these sleepers on the track will play an essential part in ensuring the line is up to scratch and will help greatly to preserve our heritage operation,” Mr Walker said. “If all goes to plan we will be able to reopen a section of the Mary Valley Heritage Railway in early 2013.” “The Rattler will be back. But we can’t forget there is still a lot of hard work to do.”

Dagun Growers’ festive times SATURDAY Dec 22 is the last market of the year for Dagun Growers where you can collect all the goodies you need for the big day. Market will resume Saturday January 12. Amamoor & Kandanga Stations’ market stalls will be joining us over this period so come and support your local community groups. Elaine is back from her American adventure full of inspiration and exciting new ideas for Mary Valley Country Harvest Food Hub. The co-op is in the process of being formed, so if you are interested in learning more about the group contact Elaine on 5484 3749. It seems the Americans were envious of our extensive growing season in the Valley

which allows us to plant and produce food for a lot longer season. Something we can be very thankful for! Surprising was the diversity of produce available throughout the Appalachians. It seems the secret to success of small farmers is embracing diversity. The key is what you are offering and where you are selling it. Also surprising was Kale topped the list of green vegetables sold, then collard. Something which we in Australia rarely see (it used to adorn the butcher shops, remember!) or eat, but it is a highly nutritious and hardy vegetable that will tackle even our extreme summer days. Elaine has a fantastic recipe for Kale chips in which you simply lightly oil

So time to stock up! Eggplants & peppers are beginning to make an appearance with lots of varieties of interesting zucchinis. Try something new and sweet. There is always a good selection of salad and cooking greens. The lettuce mix is long lasting and super fresh! Imbil Homestead supply fresh baked bread, local veg and a distinct assortment of Honeys. FOR many years the Pomona Garden Centre has been operating in Reserve Street, Pomona but it is now going to make way for the new fire station. It’s a bit of bad luck for artist Marilyn Spencer who had just taken it over to have frontage for promoting art lessons and picture framing which was tucked up behind the garden centre. A clearance of all pots (some just arrived for Christmas gifts), plants, water features even shade houses must go. What is left after Christmas will be at the rear art shed with Chic Image Art and Framing until other premises are found. Eventually all the businesses from the ambulance to IGA will

go. Marilyn will continue tutoring art with almost full classes into next year after some 15 prizes from the small art shop were awarded in the past year. Some had never picked up a pencil or brush before. “It’s so therapeutic, fun and we all become friends,” said Marilyn. “The garden centre will stay open on Tuesday evenings until 6pm until Christmas and closed Sunday and Mondays. Merry Christmas to all, call in grab a bargain. Artist paints etc also almost cost price. Ph 54851155 for info and art bookings.

Cathy Quinn, Debbie Noyek, Marion Johnson, Yvie Somerville, Alli Pope, Chrissy Hughes. WHEN Annie’s husband John dies of Leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new couch in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer, Lawrence. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Based on the true story of eleven Women’s Institute members who posed nude for a cal-

endar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund. Calendar Girls will be directed by Ken James, well known for his many T.V roles including Skippy, The Box, Glenview High, Skyways, Sons and Daughters, and Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton. In 2009 Ken was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, making this journey for him a very personal one. He is a spokesperson for Lymphoma Australia. Part of the proceeds will be going to Leukemia and Lymphoma Research. Strive through the Festive Season

WE all know this time of year can be murder on our waistlines and often our goal is to simply survive the festive season. Well this year you can strive through the festive season with these few simple tips. Priorities exercise – whatever it might be push harder, faster, stronger, and longer! Do something each day even if only a brisk walk. Getting a bit of a sweat up is the key. Get enough sleep - Australians are sleep deprived and during the silly season, more so then ever. Make it a pact to get an extra hour sleep a night whenever you can fit it in. Watch what you eat. Remember less fat, fewer takeaways and when you eat out ask for sauces on the side (usually that will mean fewer kilojoules). You don’t have to deprive yourself but make sensible choices and only have a small amount of treats rather than a whole plate full! Restrict alcohol - Remember that while alcohol has some anti-oxidant qualities, too much is not too good. Try to have at least three alcohol free days a week and on the other days have a

Boots for Bali

maximum of four standard drinks per day for men and two standard drinks for women. Get a massage to take time out for yourself. We all get a bit tired before the Christmas break arrives and a massage is a great way to revive your energy. Drop some fitness Christmas hints – suggest to friends and family that they give presents with a fitness twist - a new pair of runners, some personal training sessions or a new exercise machine are all great hints and much better for you than a box of chocolates or a bottle of plonk! Life is a team sport - make time for all those important people in your life. It is they who give your life meaning. Lastly, remember those New Year resolutions could start now! Give yourself a head start – why wait to the 1st of January? Want some more tips and tricks to being a leaner and fitter version of yourself? Or want to buy someone you love a voucher for Christmas? A beggar woman and her children in Ubud. She receives no government benefits and without a family or husband they are destitute. Her children can never go to school as she cannot pay for their education. EILEEN and David Walder of Eerwah Vale spent three weeks earlier this year in Bali where they provide support, equipment and money for the Samuh/ Bugbug village kindergarten, soccer teams and several Balinese families through their ‘Boots for Bali” project. Eileen said it was heartwarming to see just how much has been achieved at the kindy since their last visit. There is now a separate room for 9 special needs children, a kitchen to ensure no child is hungry. A new wooden climbing frame and covered play area has also been added. The Balinese Government has now given a grant to encourage the continuation of soccer and futsal fol-

lowing the Walders’ supplying uniforms and equipment for 5 village teams. Despite being retirees, David and Eileen raise money through donations, sales of the Entertainment Book, sausage sizzles, golf days and raffles. Poverty is still a huge problem especially in rural areas and all education must be paid for so many children are denied education as there is no social security or income for far too many people. “The Balinese are such beautiful, friendly and gentle people,” Eileen said. “Our reward is seeing the joy on their faces when they see what we have for them.”

Merry Christmas from Cooroy Scouts

Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Come in and see Maria, Scott and Chloe for all your feet requirements.

2012 has been a great year for the cubs, scouts and venturer scouts with a variety of camps and activities. Our final camp for the year was a family camp at Camp Cooroora on Lake Macdonald. Fortunately the weather was perfect - nice and sunny so we had a great time orienteering, canoeing and mucking about on the slip and slide. Thank you to all the parents who came along and helped to make it such a good weekend for the youth members. The next event will be the Australian Jamboree at Maryborough in January 2013. This will be a huge event with more than 10000 scouts from all over Australia and many from overseas in attendance. Many of our scouts and leaders will be there and are looking forward to 10 days of fun and adventure. Cooroy Scout Group has now finished activities for 2012, and all regular section activities will resume when school starts back next in 2013. Keep an eye on the facebook page for details. Volunteers are always needed, so if you are a fun person, why not think about becoming a leader. Check the website for more info. If you like to know more about Cooroy Scout Group, please contact our Group Leader Elaine Williams on 0438 851 474. Be prepared for asthma over the festive season As we begin the countdown to end of year holidays, Asthma Foundation Queensland has some tips and ideas to consider before you set off on holiday travel. Be prepared, be safe and enjoy your holidays. Following these tips will help maintain good asthma control and help you to breathe easy while away. Tip 1 – Make sure you have enough medication and the right equipment before you travel. Whether you are taking a holiday or a work trip, changes in routine, location, weather, temperature, pollution (especially bushfires during summer in Australia) and unknown allergens may produce unexpected asthma symptoms. Tip 2 – Visit your doctor before you go Have a check-up before you go away to make sure your day-to-day asthma is under control, you have enough medications, and you are taking them the correctly. If you are going overseas, it is a good idea to get your doctor to write a letter stating the history and severity of your asthma as well as a list of your medications (using the generic name) and delivery devices. Carry this letter with you at all times in case of an emergency. You may need

to present this report to customs in other countries if questioned about carrying medication. Tip 3 – Your medications and equipment Be sure to take additional medication in your luggage and keep your normal day-to-day medication with you in your carry bag. Take all of your prescriptions in case you lose your medication, or to prove it is for your own personal use. A spacer device is portable, inexpensive and come in a range of different sizes to make it easy to fit in your luggage. Don’t leave your spacer behind because of space – visit your local pharmacy to discuss travel options, or call Asthma Foundation Queensland for recommendations. Tip 4 – Be prepared – plan well! Before you travel this holiday season, call Asthma Assist – the Foundation’s information service to receive your free Live Well with Asthma Control Pack containing important information about asthma, along with first aid resources. Don’t let your asthma stop you from creating great memories this festive season. For more information on travelling with asthma, call our team of Asthma Educators on 1800 645 130 or visit www.asthmafoundation.org.au.

Maple Street Acupuncture says thanks for a great year SO it’s that time of year again… “Already?” I hear you say? By most accounts, 2012 was a doozy! And this was certainly true for us at Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine. With 2013 looming overhead, and a lot on the plate for the future, I would like to take this opportunity to slow down and reflect on the year that’s been, and all that we should be greatful for. With any new journey, in a new area, it can get a little scary when considering how alone we find ourselves, however from the first week we opened our doors we have been warmly accepted with open arms, trust and sincerity. The support from the community has been overwhelming and so incredibly positive that it really confirms that we’ve made the right decision chosing Cooroy for our Natural Health Clinic. A situation I recall almost daily, is when a lovely local lady came in asking some advice about an issue she had, and after becoming increasingly frustrated with the options given to her by multiple GP’s and specialists she was “at her wits end”. She was at a total loss to what course of

action she should take and we agreed that Acupuncture would be the best approach for her, so she attended a few weekly treatments and began getting some excellent results. I saw her the following week at the clinic where she was beaming from ear to ear and told me that she has no doubt that it was fate that our paths crossed and she was so overwhelmed that she had finally found some answers. And that’s how we feel constantly, that it is pure fate that has led us here, but love and support that’s keeping us here! With our first year in business now reached, we couldn’t be happier and more appreciative of the position we are now in. We had some unforseen personal health issues and the birth of our beautiful 2nd child, which really tested our resolve, but thanks to an amazingly fantastic team of practitioners, and a priceless receptionist, we came out the other side with big smiles! Thank you again for an exciting year and we look forward to all the promise and potential of 2013. Ryan & Amy Steinbeck, Clinic owners

12 days of Christmas Health Tips FORGET turtledoves, French hens, or even golden rings; the best gift you can give yourself and your true love this Christmas is the gift of good health. 1. Stress: 'Tis the season to be jolly – so why is Christmas such a stressful time for so many of us? A combination of reasons; financial pressures, a busy social calendar and end-of-year burnout all contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. Organisation and planning can help keep you calm and take some of the pressure off. Decide what's really important, and what's contributing unnecessarily to your stress. Delegate wherever possible – you don't have to do it all on your own! 2. What to eat: Ah canapés, the downfall of many a determined healthy eater. The problem is that they look so tiny on that big silver platter – could something so small really do so much damage? Canapés and finger food at parties are often high in kilojoules and fat, and while drinking, chatting and socialising, we tend to forget how many we've had! Try to choose healthier options where possible such as chicken skewers, sushi, prawns, smoked salmon, vegetable crudités and fresh fruit. Avoid fried foods, cakes and pastries. 3. What to drink: If you choose to drink alcohol, try to be aware of how much you're consuming. A standard drink is 10g of alcohol, which equates to 100ml wine (much less than we usually pour ourselves!), 30ml spirits, 60ml fortified wine e.g. port, sherry, 425ml light beer or 285ml full strength beer. Be wary of cocktails or punches at parties as the alcoholic content may be much higher than you realise (not to mention the added kilojoules from fruit juices and other ingredients). 4. When to eat: Ham, turkey, mince pies, gingerbread, fruit cake, pudding, shortbread - are your memories of Christmas centred on food? Try to enjoy the festive fare in moderation and only indulge in the foods you really enjoy. Simple tricks like waiting until Christmas Eve to eat a mince pie, or having a small piece of shortbread with your cup of tea but passing on the chocolates (which we eat all year round) mean you won't feel like you're missing out. 5. Financial strain: Blowing your budget during the festive season is unfortunately common, and can lead to a painful credit card hangover in the New Year. If you have a large group of family and friends to buy presents for, consider agreeing on a price limit per person, or arrange where each member of the group buys a present for one other member only. 6. Avoiding alcohol: At this time of year, there seems to be a party, dinner or get-together every other night. Often, these occasions involve alcohol, and you may feel subtle pressure to join in and not be a 'wowser'. If you want to limit your alcohol intake, try substituting a really good mineral water for wine and drink it out of your favourite wine glass. If you do decide to drink alcohol, be

sure to alternate with non-alcohol drinks (preferably water) to keep yourself hydrated. 7. Weight gain prevention: Never is the 'kilo creep' more insidious than over the festive period. According to Nutrition Australia, Australians gain on average between 0.8-1.5kg over the Christmas period. Try to prevent weight gain by enjoying festive food in moderation at celebrations and eating mostly healthy foods when you're at home. Try to maintain your regular exercise routine where possible or swap it for other activities such as playing games and sports with your family or going for a walk together after dinner. 8. Dealing with family conflict: Family and relationship stress often comes to a head at this time of year. If you have a strained relationship during the year with some family members, try not to expect miracles. Some people may turn to alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs as a means of coping with family conflict, however these will not alleviate stress and in fact will probably increase problems on the day, and perpetuate difficulties in the long run. Instead, try to identify triggers for conflict and avoid these topics or behaviours. 9. Sleep: The 'silly season' can wreak havoc with sleeping schedules. Regular routines go out the window and we may also adopt habits that interfere with our sleep such as drinking alcohol late at night. When you're on holidays, try to go to bed and get up at a reasonable hour; resist the long sleep-in or you may find it difficult to get to sleep the following night. 10. Physical activity: The holiday break often leads to a break in our regular exercise regimes. Adaptation is the key – beat the heat by exercising first thing in the morning or in the evening when it's cooler. If your regular workout is cancelled over the Christmas holidays, make plans with a friend to meet up for a bike ride or a swim at the beach. 11. Bereavement: If you have lost a loved one, your feelings of grief and loss may be worse at Christmas time. Remember that everyone grieves differently and family members may want to acknowledge the loss in different ways. Some find sticking to traditions comforting, while others find a change in the routine helps them cope. Some family members may want to reminisce, while others prefer to remember the lost family member privately in their own way. It's important to respect these differences and accommodate each other's reactions as much as possible. 12. Loneliness: For some people, Christmas can be a very lonely and depressing time of year. To help cope with feelings of depression and loneliness, find out if anyone else in your social circle is spending Christmas alone and organise to spend the day together or consider volunteering at a charity, homeless shelter or nursing home on Christmas Day. Participating in local community events like Carols by Candlelight can also offer a sense of belonging.

Japanese cuisine

YEAR 8 Noosa District State High School Japanese students were given a practical insight into food and restaurant language during their LOTE classes in Term 4. The Japanese students written task involved the creation of a menu for their own restaurant and the students conducted role plays in a Japanese restaurant play set. Students finalised Term 4 by cooking Japanese savoury pancakes called okonomiyaki. Japanese teacher Mick Turner was pleased with his students efforts this term.

DON’T worry if you haven’t made your cake weeks ahead - This luscious cake packed with alcohol-soaked fruits and nuts can be made as late as you like

Prep time: 30 min, plus soaking time Cook time: 4 hrs Serves: Makes 1 x 20cm cake

Method 1. For the cake: place the dried fruits, cherries, stout, whisky, orange juice, zest and treacle into a large pan and bring to the boil, stirring. Simmer gently for 10 minutes, then remove from the heat and allow to cool completely. Preferably, transfer to a bowl and chill overnight - but don’t worry if you can’t: just leave it soaking as long as you can. 2. Preheat the oven to 140C/gas 2. 3. Lightly grease a 20cm round cake tin and line with baking parchment or a shaped silicone sheet. 4. Place all the remaining ingredients except the nuts in a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly (I do mine in the electric mixer when I’m feeling lazy). Beat until smooth, then fold in the soaked fruit and the nuts.

5. Spoon into the prepared tin and level the top, making a slight dip towards the centre. Bake for 3 hours, then check and cover the top with more paper or silicone if it is over-browning. Bake for a further 30 minutes-1 hour, or until a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean. 6. Allow to cool for 10 minutes or so in the tin, then turn out and allow to cool completely on a rack. 7. Wrap the cake in baking parchment and then in foil, and store in a tin somewhere cool and dry until it’s time to decorate it. Every couple of weeks (or more often, if you’re short of time), unwrap the cake, make a few holes in the top with a skewer, spoon a little brandy or whisky over the top and let it soak in. This keeps the cake moist - and makes it taste even better. You can use orange juice if you’re avoiding too much alcohol. Rewrap the cake and store. vour you like), then roll the marzipan strip onto the rolling pin to pick it up. Hold the 8. How clever! Just cut a cream cheese block on the diagonal to have the pieces to make a tree shape. Then add some bell pepper decorations and some pepper jelly (and Wheat Thins of course), and you have an awesomely cute appetizer!

COOROY RAG

ARE you searching for somewhere that can give you absolute privacy but be close to the Sunshine Coast beaches and lifestyle? Are you looking for a rural escape where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of wholesome country living but still be only 10 minutes from a thriving Noosa Hinterland community? Do you appreciate the opportunity to further improve on the paddocks as well as the timbered trail areas? This could be your chance to build an amazing home for you and your family on the edge of Cooroy. With 55 acres in total there are cleared pastures to run your cattle or horses, beautiful rainforest and timbered areas with meandering shade dappled walkways and water in great abundance through the three sizeable dams, all completely on the holding. A well built colorbond shed is already in place with three phase power. This would make a great base whilst you plan and design your new dwelling. Following the vehicle ac-

cessible trails from the shed up the North Eastern boundary we climb up to spectacular, uninterrupted views over the rural landscape to the West and North and past Mt Eerwah at Eumundi to the East and on to the Pacific Ocean. You have to be here to appreciate the panoramic scene that unfolds below you; photos do not do it justice. When you come to inspect, bring your camera as the opportunity to have such a bird’s eye view of the Noosa Hinterland is rare. Below and across the dams are open green fields with some improved pasture. Soil is fertile and with plenty of water from the dams you can put all your green thumb ideas into practice. Price: $419,000. Phone David Lafferty 0410 445 918 and John Tucker 0418 713 487 at Hinternoosa.com.au

Stunning Queenslander on 27 acres

NESTLED in lush pasturelands just minutes from Eumundi, this superb 5 bedroom Queenslander is positioned perfectly away from the road on 27 acres. Built in 1993, this

character home is of generous proportions with 4 large bedrooms all opening out onto the verandas, 2 living rooms, one with a wood fire to heat the whole house, a new kitchen

built to impress any caliber of chef, 10 foot ceilings and crimsafe security screens and doors fitted to the whole house. Waste the days away on the extra wide verandas overlooking

the sparkling inground pool with a waterslide for the kids and a spa for the grownups. If you are seeking dual living or a work from home space, the lower level is the perfect place. There is a fifth bedroom, living area, bathroom and laundry with room for a kitchenette. The wine cellar and tool shed is lockable and there is enough room to park 5 vehicles undercover. A property of immense beauty, the land has something for everyone. Over the years, the current owners have enjoyed the property for its pockets of natural rainforest, running creek, abundance of different bird species,

wildlife & spring fed dams. Perfect for horses, there is a large arena and approx 20 acres of usable land. The monster shed houses 3 stables, a saddle room, lockable storage area, funky chook house, 4 machinery bays and a mezzanine area to store the extra farm gear. Whatever your purpose, if you are searching for a unique property simply for lifestyle, nature and privacy, or to run as a functioning farm for your livestock or horses then an inspection is a must. Noosa District Touch success NOOSA District State High School performed well in the Noosa Touch Association’s Winter Grand finals for Juniors and Senior players last weekend. The Year 8 boys’ team won the Junior 14 Years Boys B Grade Final, 7 -2, while the Open Boys team won their B Grade Men’s final, 5 – 2. The 15 Years girls continued their golden year by making the Senior Women’s A Grade Final, but unfortunately lost against a more experienced team. Morgan Laidlaw and Lachlan Langton were awarded Players of the Match for the junior girls’ and boys’ teams. Morgan Laidlaw and Hayden Trask were also presented the prestigious ‘Noosa Touch Association’s Junior Most Valuable Person’ Awards. The Most Valuable Person Award not only recognises on-the-field talent, but it also recognises commitment to coaching, refereeing and

the team players of the year for each team; and the overall best male and best female players will get their name on the NDSHS / NTA perpetual trophies. Parents, supporters and players will be invited to the pool for a BBQ and swim after viewing some videos and photos highlighting the touch teams’ efforts this year. Touch team coaches Mr Gordon and Mr Quinlivan are both extremely proud of their teams’ achievements this season and are pleased to see that commitment and hard work has paid off with such outstanding results.

Belinda represents Australia

NOOSA District State High School Year 10 student Belinda Monckton represented Australia at the Oceania Karate Championships held in Sydney last month and she did her country proud, taking out top placings. Belinda was awarded a silver medal in her individual kumite (sparring) event and gold in the team kumite. Belinda said that it “felt good” to see all her hard work and dedication to the sport

result in such amazing success at the Championships. Belinda trains in karate at Budokan International at Noosa on Monday to Thursday for a number of hours after school each day. Kumite is what Belinda most enjoys about karate and this is often her focus in her training. Peers who do well in the sport inspire Belinda to achieve. She also has family and friends who provide support and celebrate in her success. “My family and friends are really happy with my recent success,” Belinda said. Belinda is planning for even more success next year and has already started to set goals. “Next year I would like to be the Cadet Junior World Champion,” Belinda said. Belinda hopes to represent Australia in the Cadet World Championship in Spain and she also plans to compete in the Commonwealth Karate Championships held in Canada next year. Noosa District State High School staff and students are proud of Belinda’s achievements in the sport and wish her well with her lofty goals next year.

Impact adds five new Qld Champions to their stable! IMPACT Boxing Academy added another five Qld State Titleholders to their stables! Impact Boxing finished the year in emphatic fashion last weekend when they competed in the Queensland Amateur Boxing Associations Qld State Titles. The State titles were held over three days with boxers travelling from all corners of the State to compete. The Impact crew won an impressive five gold and two silver medals to end the year. The two silver medal decisions were draws and the decisions were given to our opponents by one point on count back to the scores at the end of round two. You can’t get much closer than that. Out of the five State Title winners we now have four Impact fighters on the Qld team to represent at the Australian Titles to be held in February in South Australia. Those members are - Tai Hawkins 52 kg, Payton Aird Cardiff 52 kg, Sam CameronHands 40 kg and Ben Cameron-Hands 34 kg. Cian Jones also won gold and the 36 kg Qld Title but is unable to at-

have stayed dedicated and worked so hard all year as the results show! I love these kids like they are my own and to see them reach their individual goals in what i believe is the hardest sport in so many ways is a truly humbling experience. I would like to thank all the parents, supporters and follow-

OVER 100 Year 8 and Year 9 Noosa District State High School students were rewarded for exceptional behaviour and effort report card results with a full day excursion to Caloundra’s Rollerdome yesterday. The students escaped a hot summer’s day inside the indoor ice skating rink. Most picked up the sport quite quickly and were performing stunts and competing in “dance offs” to win prizes. Year 9 Co-ordinator Jeff Sprecker showed up all those present with the ice skating talents he picked up growing up in Canada. Mr Sprecker “lapped” many of the students and showed off skating on one leg. The Year 8’s and 9’s impressed the staff at the Rollerdome with their politeness and enthusiasm. A fun and very cool day was had by all.
