IT may still be a few sleeps away, but Christmas has arrived early in East Timor. Educational care parcels in the form of the 2,000 shoe boxes collected from Cooroy, Tewantin, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools left in June and made it through storms and a school-term break to arrive in Timor. Thanks to a collective and determined community effort, the educational parcels were distributed at Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu. It’s a school about 30 minutes west of Dili and thousands of students were waiting eagerly to receive one. The school officially has 150 kindergarten students, 250 of primary age and some 200 junior high school kids, but the surrounding area of need stretches to include hundreds more. With the help of the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Tewantin, Cooroy, Pomona and Marcoola the Rotary Club of Noosa, the school was identified as a community school with no help from the ministry of education in Timor. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from the three state schools to the child opening it at the other end. The Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and the Rotary Club of Noosa share the shipment costs because both organisations continue to see an opportunity to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Cooroy State School deputy principal, Karina Ramsay said learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes has brought an emotional

reaction from her students. To the hundreds of students who got involved at the school, the spirit of the project has really hit home in anticipation of seeing the video of the shoe boxes arriving. “The students and our school all have a real connection to this project. They had a ball putting the care parcels together in June. It’s great to see the collective efforts of the kids, their families and the teams at Bendigo Bank and Rotary put those shoe boxes into the hands of the kids who need them most,’’ Mrs. Ramsay said. “It’s also wonderful to see their thoughtfulness come full circle and we’re proud to have been part of it all again this year. Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box,” she added. Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches manager, Geoff Edwards said the project continues to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back and in this case the community recipients have been international ones. This project is about community partnership and feels as relevant now as when we started in 2008. We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with Rotary and we’re looking forward to watching some of the kids recognise their shoe box in the video. We all love this project and are committed to doing it all again in 2018,” he said.

news 2018 Scholarship up for grabs

COOROY RAG

The Senior cohort from which one student will receive the scholarship IT’S going to be a fabulous start to 2018 for one recently graduated Year 12 student from Noosa District State High. Well known for its support of a number of programs at the school, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has once again pledged its support to one local student when their annual university or TAFE scholarship program application period opens in December. Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to a local student to further their tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to the school and building a stronger community. “The high cost associated with tertiary study can have a significant impact on a young person’s ability to further their education. Because of this, some may not get the chance to achieve their academic dreams without some help. The scholarship is designed to assist regional and rural students planning to attend university or TAFE for the first time in 2018,” Mr. Edwards said. ‘’Our Community Bank branch is proud to support local youth by furthering their education and easing some of the financial pressure on the recipient and their family,’’ he added. The scholarship will support a local student with tertiary and study related costs. The successful applicant will receive funding of $5,000 for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship will

be renewed for a second $5,000 instalment to assist the second year of their study. Noosa District State High School Year 12 co-ordinator, Bernard Weekes said it’s wonderful knowing another NDSHS student will attend university or TAFE next year because of the bank’s generosity. “This will be the sixth scholarship awarded by Bendigo Bank. We’re delighted to partner with them to give another senior student the opportunity to take their dream to the next level. Last year, the winner was Ruby Tucker and her example has inspired the Year 12 cohort this year. The 2018 recipient will be very fortunate and we’re delighted our relationship with the Cooroy Community Bank branch continues to strengthen - it’s a wonderful initiative,” Mr. Weekes said. Eligible students are invited to apply at www.bendigoadelaide.com.au/scholarships until January 27 and will then be assessed. The lucky recipient will be announced in time to put the funds towards set up costs for university and TAFE study in early February. In the meantime, brochures are available from NDSHS reception, visiting the Cooroy Community Bank branch at 36 Maple Street or by calling 1300 304 541. The Cooroy Community Bank Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which now has 554 recipients across Australia.

IT’S the busiest and often happiest time of our year, but also one of the most expensive. Presents, work drinks, family functions and school holidays can also keep us feeling a little broke. To financially survive the Festive Season, try following these tips: • Stick to your budget. Write a list including anticipated costs and then try to live by it. • Try to save in advance. As I mentioned in my column last edition, if you saved $20 a week for a year you would have over $1,000. At our Bendigo Bank branches in Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin, we offer Christmas Club accounts to assist with savings for December. • Start your shopping early. This can effectively spread the financial commitment over many weekly pays or pensions. This way it won’t feel too cumbersome all at once. • Try not to put everything on the credit card. This debt will only be there to pay later. Credit cards are great but they can easily get out of control. • Secret Santa or a Kris Kringle present giving can greatly reduce your cost. Everyone still gets a present and it does not cost as much. • At parties and BBQ’s don’t cater for 50 people when only 20 are coming. In addition share the work load and cost but getting everyone to pitch in.

Christmas and the holidays is usually a great time for everyone. Many have at least a few days off work to spend with family and friends. If you’re lucky enough to be one of them, enjoy your well-earned break. So, on behalf of all our team here I wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I’ll be back in 2018 with more columns. If you want to have a chat about any banking matter, feel free to contact me or any of our team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. WHILE most Aussies had planned to retire at age 65, the reality is that around a quarter of us are expecting to delay our retirement. The most recent Retirement and Retirement Intentions survey data released by ABS in 2015 found the number of people aged 45 and over who intend to retire later than age 65 is 23%, compared to only 8% of people surveyed in 2004-051 The main reason people say they’re going to delay their retirement is a lack of financial security (40% for men and 25% for women). And more than half of those surveyed (53%) stated they expect to rely solely on their super, annuity or allocated pension as their main source of income in retirement2. And given Australians have one of the highest rates of debt in the world3, this trend looks set to continue. So what can you do to increase your cash flow and reduce your debt to help you live the lifestyle you want in retirement? Preparing for retirement If you still have a few years to go before you retire, here are some things you could consider: • Work a bit longer than you had planned. This will help you boost your savings and your super balance, so that you will have a more comfortable lifestyle in retirement. • Work towards becoming debt-free. Take control of your debt by paying off your credit card, refinancing and/or consolidating your debt (such as, into your home loan) or use bill smoothing to reduce interest, fees and charges. • Get serious about having a budget. Use our budget calculator to work out how much you really need to set aside for everyday living, bills and savings. You can use a special bank account such as the AMP Bett3r Account to easily keep your money in separate accounts or ‘buckets’. • Don’t keep all your investment eggs in one basket. Consider choosing a diversified mix of investments within your super which could potentially generate more income.

• Refinance or downsize your home. Find out what you need to know about selling your family home or accessing the equity in your home to help fund your retirement. Living in retirement If you’ve already retired, here are some ways to make your money last longer: • Take control of your finances. There are several strategies that could help boost your cash flow. Read about how to manage your money in retirement. • Use your savings to invest. Another way to boost income is to invest your savings in shares, property, cash, fixed income, managed funds or growth bonds. Be aware though that any earnings will be subject to tax. Find out more about investing and how to make your money work for your future. • Know your entitlements. Find out what benefits you are entitled to in retirement. For example, your Pensioner Concession Card entitles you to reduced cost medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and depending on which state you live in, you could receive reduced rates on water and energy bills, car registration and public transport. Finding ways to reduce debt and increase your cash flow in retirement can be a complex and time-consuming task. If you’d like help with working out what’s right for you, please contact us on 07 5447 7740. FORMER Army officer and now resident of Cooroy John Cantwell has taken on a new challenge as President of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club. John decided to step up to the president’s job to help the club work through a major program of renewal and modernization.

What is said in the Barber shop stays in the Barber shop VIKKI Lingard and Graham Smith have opened their barber shop ‘The Brush & Bristle’ in Maple Street Cooroy, a couple of doors from Mitre 10. Having moved from Buderim where they barbered for many years, settled in Ninderry and opened their store in Yandina in 2016, “We have enjoyed being part of the Yandina community and they have embraced us as a new business. We are part of the Yandina chamber of commerce and believe in getting involved in community projects. We are looking forward to getting to know the charming town of Cooroy and meeting its local people and forming strong working partnerships.” Vikki enthused. Graham hails from England, calls Australia home, trained and worked in England, moved

to the Coast where he has worked and has owned salons since 2002. Vikki trained and worked for Brisbane’s iconic Barber, Col Nayler and moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1991 to raise family and work at the Buderim Barbers. “We both hold old fashioned barbershop values, good service, friendly staff, who enjoy people, a good chat and a laugh. “What is said in the Barber shop stays in the Barbershop” We offer a full experience, hot towels, neck shaves and a splash of bay rum. (The ol’ barbershop aftershave) we are an authorised uppercut deluxe salon, can do all of the trending looks, beard shaping and clipper cuts. We have a good range of products,

upper cut deluxe for all styling needs, black gel (secret weapon for greying hair), bay rum shave creams and a range of Earth Hub beard oils locally made and produced on the Sunshine Coast. We have gift certificates available for Christmas stockings or a good way to get the man in your life to experience the Brush and Bristle. We have both been in the industry for many years, seen styles come and go, it has been a pleasure to see barbershops becoming popular again, love what the ‘hipsters’ have brought to the business, 50’s and 60’s styles becoming new again, long beards shaped and products that cater to specific needs, making the barbershop an experience not just a job to be done. A place where chat and banter abound and some of the world’s problems are sorted if only in our minds. I remember Col Nayler telling me when he barbered in the 50-60’s he did many haircuts

with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth and he took The odd bet on the gg’s. He sold papers and cigarettes and cut hair for most of Brisbane’s Bodgies who lined up for ages to get Col to cut their hair. While we have had to change some of those practices it is great to be able to capture that old world feel in our Barbershops. Col was a character, a lovable rouge, polite and articulate, loyal to a fault and a pleasure to be around. He passed on his trade and wisdom to many and I still have clients relay stories to me about their time in his shop. The Brush and Bristle is open TuesdayFriday 9-5 Saturday 8-12 , no appointments are necessary, but call with any queries on 5442 6805. We will be closed from the 23rd dec to 2nd Jan and look forward to a wonderful first year in Cooroy.

DID you know that one in nine people in Australia have asthma?! It is a disease that can affect people of all ages and something that we really should have some understanding of. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to “cure” asthma; but we have many different management strategies in the pharmacy that can manage our patients’ symptoms quite well. So what type of symptoms would you notice in a person with asthma? There are many different symptoms which may accompany the condition; however, the most common are: Breathlessness, Wheezing, A tight feeling in the chest, Continuing cough. Children can often show other signs such as: Not eating or drinking as much as usual, Crying, Having a stomach ache and/or vomiting, Tiring quickly, Getting more “puffed out” when exercising/running etc What is actually happening in the body of an asthmatic? Muscles in the airways tighten and the lining of the airway then becomes swollen/inflamed; this in turn produces a sticky mucous. Over time these changes cause the airways to become narrow, making it difficult to breathe. Asthma symptoms are often worsened by what we refer to as “triggers.” A trigger is something that irritates the airways and may differ from person-to-person. Some of the more common triggers include house dust mites, animal fur, pollen, tobacco smoke, exercise, cold air and chest infections. Asthma patients need to see their doctor regularly and will generally be given a “management plan” detailing their specific instructions for treatment/management of an attack. Depending on the severity of the condition, the patient may use a “reliever” medicine just when having an attack, or they may be using “preventative” medicine every day in more severe cases. In any case, we are here to help and guide you through your individual treatment/ management plans, so come in and speak with your LiveLife Pharmacist today! We will ensure you know exactly how and when to use your medications and help you to feel better sooner!
