Not my fave WELL, I’ve done my part in trying to boost the local economy. My credit card is once again racked up to its limit which means my New Year’s Resolution is also taken care of ... to try and pay it off before the end of 2012. I’ve also bought the turkey (made sure it fit in the oven this time), wrapped the presents and posted the cards. I’ve even got our traditional family Christmas Day barney out of the way early. So it’s check, check and check. All that’s left to do is sit back and wait for the fat man to arrive. I’m hoping he’ll bring me a new personality this year as I seem to have lost mine somewhere in the frantic lead-up to the holidays. I’ll be looking for my Christmas spirit in the bottom of a spirit bottle, hope it’s down there with the worm. So there you have it ... tinsel, turkey and traditions ... Fighting at the seafood buffet for the lemon and salt NOT MY FAVE!

Christmas Story Christmas isn’t just a story It’s all about God’s true glory How He came from heaven above To teach us how to truly love When we hold that candle bright And feel the love in Silent Night It’s all about His Spirit here And in His word it’s very clear He came as Jesus to this earth To show us all what has true worth And show us how to start anew Embrace what’s good and really true And love each other as He loves you Lyn Nowland Next edition: January 18 Booking deadline: January 5 Copy deadline: January 9 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Brenda, Kerry, Janet and Robyn at the Cooroy Rag

What’s in a name? The profession of psychiatry studies matters psychiatric, Covering all the age groups, infancy to geriatric. Things that once we never worried about, Now have fancy names, filling our minds with doubt. Separation Anxiety Disorder is what the homesick have to bear, and Juvenile Management Facilitator is a worker in child care. Social Anxiety Disorder is the tag they put on shyness, Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, is a sore throat or a sinus. When a teenager has a temper tantrum, it’s Disruptive Mood Deregulation, And if littlies get over excited, it is Juvenile Manic Over-Stimulation. What once was known as fidgeting, is now called Hyperactive, (Paranoid Personality Disorder doesn’t sound really attractive!!) As for ADHD, the definition keeps getting broader, It is now a medical condition, labelled Oppositional Defiant Disorder. So pre-school littlies, as young as three, are on special medication, (One suspects much of it could be cured, with firm parental determination!!)

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY FUN Wet Slyde with sprinklers ONLY $35

This glorifying of ordinary names, is nothing really strange, It happens in society, where names quite often change. A Waste Disposal Operative was once a garbage collector, A cleaner is now an Environmental Hygiene Technical Director. A bus driver is a Transportation Scheduling Operator, While a waitress is a Food Distribution Facilitator. A Time And Motion Transgression Recorder, often clad in brown, Is just a Council Park Officer, prowling around the town. A Forward Motion Rate Monitor, is a speed cop in reality, Overeating is Optical Oversize Relative to Abdominal Capacity. But best of all I like the name which offers respectability, A Beer Belly is in genteel terms, a Grain Alcohol Storage Facility.

John, Kerry, Aimee, Colin & Maddi wish the community a Merry Christmas & New Year

Where’s the rolled up Rag?

For those who would like to enter the ‘Where’s the Rolled Up Rag’ Competition, here’s what it’s about: In each edition of the Cooroy Rag we are placing the above photo (smaller version) in one of the advertisements for you to try and find. We’ll be making it as difficult as possible (a bit like ‘Where’s Wally). All you have to do is email us at

Page 2 - Cooroy Rag, December 21, 2011

editorial@cooroyrag. com.au or post your entry to: ‘Where’s the rolled up rag competition’, PO Box 898, Cooroy, 4563, and let us know which ad you found it in and the page number along with your name, address and phone number so we cantact you. The first correct entry drawn will win a $25 dinner voucher at the Cooroy RSL Club. Entries will be drawn on January 13. Last issue’s winner was Mike Gascoigne of Noosaville who found the ‘rolled up Rag’ in the Cooroy Pest Control ad on page 11.

WHAT do you get when you combine a genuinely likeable Politician, a Dentist who looks a little like George Clooney and Mr Bean rolled into one; an Italian Chef named Herb, a gavel-less clutching Governor (because SOMEONE forgot the gavel), and 63 tizzied up townsfolk who had their funny bones, tastebuds and tonsils tickled, tantalised and toned up? Why you get the Cooroy Toastmasters Charter Dinner…that’s what! Yes our little hinterland town of Cooroy is now on the global map of Toastmasters International as we became officially charted on the 22nd September. What began as an idea, evolved into a packed demonstration and information evening at the Cooroy Library and Mill Centre on the 4th of July this year. From that one demonstration meeting where those attending were given an insight into the wonderful benefits becoming a toastmaster can bring to their businesses and their lives, we officially became a club in our own right. On the 21st November, Toastmasters from various districts joined the founding members and guests of Cooroy Toastmasters, to attend the charter dinner at Cooroy’s newest Italian Restaurant and Lounge Bar, the ‘Locale’ where we were treated to champagne and antipasto followed by Bellagio and Sicilian Pastas….. delizioso!!! It seems Cooroy Toastmasters have become somewhat of a shining beacon on the Toastmasters radar due to their enthusiasm, dedication and the enjoyment factor of each and every meeting. On the night of the charter dinner everyone was made to feel like a VIP, but officially, member from Nicklin, Mr Peter Wellington MP, and Hinterland Dentist Mr Keith Doonan were our official speakers adding their own injection of fun, humour and passion to the evening. The seven founding executive committee members of the Club were sworn in by Toastmasters District 69 Governor, Mr John Kay and welcomed by Ingrid Duane, Area 16 Governor and Gary Kuss, Central Division Governor. Cooroy Toastmasters boasts an amazing array of members from all walks of life and professions including Artists, Authors, Accountants, Adventurer, Bookeepers, Special Needs Teacher, Builder, Rural Fire Brigade Volunteer, Radiation Oncologist, Tourist Operator, Real Estate Agents, Entrepreneurs and business owners of all shapes and forms, just to name a few…. yet there is always room for more. With only one meeting remaining for the year before the Christmas break, the Cooroy Toastmasters will be ready and raring to kick off 2012 with equal enthusiasm at their first meeting in February new year. So if your new year’s resolution is to meet new people, learn a host of new skills that can only improve your communication and social expertise in every avenue of your life, then feel free to come along as our guest to see what you think. Only one rule - you need to have a working funny bone, a dash of Dutch courage in your hip pocket, and a nice pair of shoes…. as that first step could be just the ingredient you were looking for to add a little flavour and interest to your life. hinternoosa Captain Neville Hall of the Salvation Army gratefully received on behalf of needy Sunshine Coast children a Christmas donation of over 500 wooden toys. The handcrafted toys were made by woodworkers Don Mitchell, Simon Hanicek, Bob Paget, Kevin Martin and Keith Beckmann of the Cooroora Woodworkers in Cooroy.

Cooroy to benefit from upgraded Sewage Treatment Plant COOROY residents will soon benefit from Unitywater’s major upgrade of the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Work on the upgrade has commenced and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. The upgrade is the latest addition in a growing list of achievements aimed at future proofing the sewage systems of the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions. Once complete, it will also ensure that residents of Pomona who have access to the sewerage network, can connect if they wish. “Investing in this key project means we can construct an improved, environmentally-friendly sewage treatment plant that will deliver a long term sustainable solution for the growing Sunshine Coast population,” Unitywater Project Manager David Goodall said. Sunshine Coast Regional Council Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan played a pivotal role in ensuring the

project could proceed. Cr Brennan worked closely with Unitywater to ensure neighbouring community groups, the Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative and the Cooroora Wood Workers Club can continue their activities while the upgrade takes place. “While it is essential for the greater Cooroy community for this upgrade to take place, it is also vital to make sure the neighbouring community is respected,” said Cr Brennan. Through Cr Brennan’s involvement, these groups have now been relocated to a larger site nearby. “It is pleasing to see an organisation such as Unitywater is willing to listen and work with Council and myself to accommodate these two community groups. Unitywater have been great partners in this project already,” he said. Unitywater will continue to keep residents and stakeholders informed of work progress on a regular basis.

Out with the old in with the new UNITYWATER contractors R&B Plumbing will be replacing old water meters in Cooroy until the end of December as part of their general maintenance program. Residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours in advance of any works. If residents are home on the day of the works, the plumber will make contact with them, prior to replacing the meter. It is necessary to temporarily interrupt water supply to replace the meters. In most cases the water will be interrupted for less than one hour, unless unforeseen circumstances are encountered during the replacement. Following meter replacement, the plumber will leave a Works Completed card in the customer’s letterbox which records the consumption of the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Water Supply and Sewerage Account. Disturbance of soil and pipes during water meter replacement may cause temporary discolouration of water for a short period. If this occurs turn on the tap nearest to ground level (usually an outside tap) and let it run for up to five minutes until water runs clear. This costs less than 25 cents and on average uses less than 125 litres of water. If water remains discoloured, please contact us on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489). For more details visit www.unitywater.com/ projects or phone our Customer Service team on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489).

Have a Merry Hinterland Christmas and keep the money at home!

loves jewelling it up for Christmas

AS Christmas fast approaches, the giant Asian factories have well and truly kicked into high gear to provide Australians with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods - merchandise that has been produced at the expense of Australian labour. This year I encourage you to be different. This year give the gift of genuine concern for other Australians. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by Australian hands. Yes there is! It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone - yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon? Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. What about a donation to the Cancer Council in honour of “Uncle Jimmy” AND, a 40 minute yummy massage with a qualified Masseuse? And who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps, that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed or lawn mowed all summer long or the gutters cleaned or perhaps games at the local golf course. And how about a gift certificate to one of our many local restaurants and cafes? Remember, this isn’t about big

Interational/National chains - this is about supporting your home town business owners with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mum? Mum would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day or two or that huge pile of ironing done. My computer could use a tune-up, and I know I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Visit our local markets where our hundreds of local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves, make jewellery, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes and there are local artists/ painters who produce stunning works, or think about some beautiful hand-made children’s gifts and clothes. And what about baking cookies or jams or making crafts yourself? Giving a box of local fresh fruit and/or cheese, home made pickles, chutneys or pate. And of course our Australian wines. Talking of painters, if you are into giving expensive gifts, what about paying for a painter to freshen up the house or just a room or two? Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your local theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a local venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, do we really need to buy an-

other ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a $5 string, about fifty cents stays in the community. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining Australian pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about us, encouraging Australian small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Australians, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. THIS is the new Australian Christmas tradition. This is a revolution to care about each other. Isn’t that why we give gifts? Author unknown, but I like it … Ed. The beautiful Ricon Christmas tree imbues our township with Christmas spirit

OVER 100 years ago pioneering families of Cooroy had the vision of establishing a Christian place of worship in this new community. Several families of the Methodist faith were going to Yandina or elsewhere, and their dedication and enthusiasm to bring their Christian heritage to Cooroy is part of our local history. In January, 1912, the first service was held in the newly finished building, complete with an organ, at 51 Maple Street. The church began to serve the community with regular ministry, baptism, Ladies Guild, Sunday School, Christmas pageants, weddings and funerals. Throughout the years, congregations prayed together during depression and years of war, and rejoiced together in abundance and times of peace. By 1947 there was a need for a hall and a new church building. So this original building was placed further back on the property and the present church was built. Later Methodist

and Presbyterian combined to become the Uniting Church of Australia. So the original church building became the Sunday School and Youth Group centre. Special tables and seats that can be folded out of the cupboards along the inside walls were designed for the large attendance of Sunday School children. Many Cooroy people in the 40-70 age groups now will remember those days, and the kindergarten room built under the church. In keeping up with the times, in 1977 a kitchen was added and the front of the building was modernized in brick. Many morning teas, functions and other meetings have been held here over the years. The hall is now in regular use by community groups, and is available for hire. Recently in readiness for its centenary celebration the hall has been painted. The century old walls are strong and welcoming to anyone who would like to join us, even

just to view and perhaps appreciate the value of this building in our community. The celebration will be a special church service at 9:00 am, on January 29, 2012, at 51 Maple Street. If you would like to attend, or have memorabilia, photos or other items to lend for the occasion please contact Mrs Betty Lindenmayer on 5447 6071, or Mr David Cramb on 5447 9477. news Are you planning for a super retirement?

COOROY RAG

Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

IN Australia, we have an ageing population as we are living longer and as a result will have more years in retirement. This means there is a growing need for more retirement savings. Boost your super with a Transition To Retirement strategy. One way to prepare for your retirement is to take advantage of a Transition to Retirement (TTR) strategy. If you are aged 55 or over and still working, you can start drawing a superannuation pension. This could allow you to start reducing your working hours without reducing your income. Or if you choose to continue working full time, it can allow greater salary sacrifice contributions to achieve a bigger pool of funds at retirement. The main points of the TTR strategy are: • Once you turn 55, you can start a pension with your superannuation. Between ages 55 and 59, income will be taxed at the concessional rate. From age 60, the pension is tax-free. • In 2009, the Government halved the concessional contributions cap. You can now salary sacrifice up to $50,000pa, but only until 30 June 2012 and the superannuation fund will pay tax at just 15 per cent rather than at your marginal tax rate. • Income streams drawn while still working must be between 4 – 10 per cent of the total TTR account balance at commencement. TTR strategies are tax-effective if you have a reasonable amount in superannuation and

if your marginal tax rate is higher than 15 per cent. You should also check if your employer can accommodate salary sacrifice arrangements and that they are able to make tax-deductible superannuation contributions. The strategy can be used to: • boost your superannuation as you near retirement • reduce your hours of work but maintain your available income - it’s important to bear in mind that this strategy will reduce your superannuation balance • create a new lifestyle as you make the transition from full-time work to part-time work, and later to retirement. There are many tax implications with the movement of money in and out of your superannuation fund and mistakes could be costly, so it is important to seek the advice from a professional financial planner. Your financial planner will help you with the right super strategy, ensuring it suits your risk profile and your timeframe. If you have any questions about financial planning or any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigobank.com.au.

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington Have a safe and merry Christmas This year seems to have flown by, starting off with the devastating flooding storms that hit Queensland during our 2010 summer season, and followed by a year of repair and recovery. Please take precautions around your homes this storm season, and stay alert when driving on our busy roads or when travelling to family and friends. I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and safe new year from Jenny and I, and my office staff Vicki and Wendy....take the time to relax with your loved ones. To our many school students finishing for the year and the graduates who are already looking toward new horizons - have a well-deserved break, have a lot of fun with friends and stay safe. Cudgerie Estate interchange well received by locals In Parliament I was able to report back to the Main Road Minister the feedback from local residents on the most recent community consultation on the planning progress on the Cooroy southern interchange to Sankeys Road. The Cudgerie community and I fought hard to convince Main Roads to change the location of the proposed Cudgerie community access to the national highway. Everyone I have spoken with is very pleased with the plans. The new proposal for a traffic interchange has it located halfway between Cudgerie Drive and Black Mountain Range Road. This is much better than the original proposal, which had access coming direct into the Cudgerie community. I now look forward to commitments from State and Federal Governments to jointly fund this very important project. Retain Mary Valley land for agriculture While speaking on the Strategic Cropping Land Bill during the final sitting of Parliament for 2011, I again pushed for better protection of our farming land, and again urged the Government to protect the Mary Valley land purchased by the government for the former Traveston Dam. Much of this land which is still owned by the government, is currently categorised as ‘management area’, and, as I stated in Parliament, I believe this and other good agricultural land on the Sunshine Coast need to be protected. Buffer zones introduced by Council years ago have not worked for our farming community, with residential neighbours complaints making it impossible for farmers to spray their crops. In Parliament I urged the government, and if the government should change - an alternative government, to genuinely look at reviewing this legislation to provide greater protection for farmers. It is vital that our government not just roll over to the developers, who seem to have the ear of the government and the alternative government. Our carers need Government support In Parliament I again told the government of the on-going plight of our caring community. I receive and ever-increasing number of calls for assistance from elderly carers and parents who are very anxious about who will care for the elderly children when they are no longer able to care for them and when they pass away. Recently we heard about all the new money from the federal government for mental health and housing needs. I reminded the government that we need to at all times make sure that the funds are getting to the very people who need to benefit. I also sought some pre-election commitments from both sides of government to consider, prior to the next election, the needs of our Queensland grandparent carers. We need to do much better to support our elderly carers, be they carers for their elderly children or grandparent carers who do not want to see their grandchildren become wards of the State because their children are unable to care for them for a range of reasons.

news Scholarship recipients welcomed with morning tea

COOROY RAG VERY proud parents and students were gathered at a special morning tea in the school restaurant, recently, to welcome recipients of middleschool scholarships, which were offered to year 8 students enrolling at Noosa High for the 2012 school year on academic, sporting and cultural criteria. The 2012 Scholarship Holders are Mitchell Martin of Tuchekoi, Sophie Berlin, Rhain Radford-Burns and Samantha Murray of Cooran, Floyd Wilcox and Meg Meldrum of Cooroy, Mathew Craigie and Samantha Johnson of Tewantin, and Georgie Leslie of Imbil. Acting Principal, Mr.

Barry Dittman addressed parents and students and reminded them of the particular responsibilities that come with the scholarship. All academic scholarship holders must maintain at least 5 “A” ratings out of 6 subjects while other holders must maintain “A” ratings in their area of expertise, and represent the school in specific events. Mr Dittman emphasized the importance of school community involvement and the consistent pursuit of excellence. Interviews for the scholarships were conducted in term 3 and awarded to students

from the feeder primary schools. The Scholarship consists of full remission of the Resource

Scheme contributions for 2 calendar years and one school uniform, including a jumper or

spray jacket, at cost price. Scholarships are held for 2 years subject to regular review.

Students receive certificates of recognition ZOE Arch and Will Glasbrook are just two out of more than 30 students at Noosa High to receive certificates in recognition of their achievements in the on-line ACER LANGUAGE course. The Assessment of Language Competence Certificates is designed to celebrate and enhance the learning of languages in Australia, New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific region. The skills testing program includes listening and reading comprehension tasks in a multiple-choice format designed to be both challenging and to enable all students to experience success. The ALC tests are conducted in schools.

news Jobmatch expands service to Cooroy and Pomona

COOROY RAG

JOBMATCH has been assisting people with barriers to employment for the past 20 years. Specialising in people with an illness, injury or disability, Jobmatch has grown from a staff of 4 in 1992 to be the largest and most successful disability placement agency in the Gympie and nearby regions. Currently Jobmatch employs 12 specially trained full time staff to work with employers to provide on the job support to over 250 jobseekers. This team is backed up by experienced administrative support staff, ensuring all of the hassle from employing new staff is removed. Jobmatch is in the process of expanding their service to include the Cooroy and Pomona areas. Initial interest has been strong, with numerous enquiries following a pamphlet drop and personal presentations in November. Jobmatch has been delighted to see community support with three local employers, recruiting three Jobmatch jobseekers in the past week. With this continued support from the local community Jobmatch is looking forward to a strong working partnership with Employers and Jobseekers from the Cooroy and Pomona regions. In the New Year it is envisaged office space will be secured in Cooroy to offer a permanent service, whilst also providing the opportunity to employ local staff to support jobseekers and employers in this region. Many people in the community assume Jobmatch, being a disability employment agency, would have a majority of clients with physical disabilities. Although this group is assisted, it is one the smaller disability groups. With an ever increasing number of people suffering from

Pomona - get connected Residents of Pomona will soon be able to connect to the reticulated town sewerage system when Unitywater’s upgrade to the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is complete in 2012.

✓ Family Law ✓ Leases and Commercial Conveyancing ✓ Cottage Conveyancing

This project will manage the increasing volume of sewage being generated in the Cooroy and Pomona catchment and significantly reduce the community’s impact on the environment.

✓ Estates ✓ Wills & Enduring Powers of Attorney

Once the STP upgrade is complete, all Pomona residents who have access to the sewerage network will be invited to connect. With sewerage fixed charges less than holding tank pump out rates, this program will deliver a more cost-effective service option for the Pomona community.

✓ Land Compensation Claims ✓ Most areas of Law

If you would like to be kept up to date on the progress of the Cooroy STP, please email us on community@unitywater.com

For more information Visit www.unitywater.com/cooroy Email community@unitywater.com Phone Unitywater’s Customer Service Centre on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489) from a landline for the cost of a local call. Standard mobile phone call charges apply.

In the meantime, Unitywater will work with those Pomona residents with an emergency need (i.e. their existing onsite sewer system is failing) to connect to the reticulated town sewerage system.

Be credit wise and have a prosperous New Year By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management AT a time when family budgets are at their most stretched, the festive season is no time to be using your credit card unwisely. If the global financial crisis wasn’t enough, many hard-pressed families now have the added pressure this Christmas of higher mortgage interest rates and rising credit card costs. There is no doubt credit cards are convenient, but they are also addictive and in a very short time that nasty four-letter word, DEBT, can fast undo a budget and ruin the festive season. A simple way of people making some savings and ensuring they really do have a merry Christmas and prosperous start to 2012 is to just be smart about how they access their money. The following tips encourage healthy spending habits and should help people avoid a financial hangover from Christmas: • One of the first tips for credit card debt management is not to have five cards. Look at combining your credit cards so you only have one or two. This means you won’t be paying several account keeping fees, transaction fees or interest across several cards. • Avoid cash advances from credit cards. Interest on these is usually charged straight away as opposed to having a waiting period.

• Check the interest rate on cards and perhaps in the New Year consider shopping around for a card. A lot of credit card providers offer zero interest on balance transfers for the first few months if customers sign up for their card and move their existing debt over. • Think about using credit cards for everyday spending but be careful to make monthly payments before the due date. You’ll be able to reduce the number of transactions you make per month and avoid bank fees. • Don’t get into the habit of making minimum-only payments. Making only the minimum payment each month increases the amount of time it will take to pay off your debt. It also increases the amount of interest you end up paying. To pay your debts off quicker and cheaper, you should pay as much as you can on your balance each month. • Don’t use your credit card to buy things you can’t afford. Living a borrowed lifestyle is the quickest way to get into debt. If you can’t afford a purchase today, chances are you won’t be able to afford it tomorrow, or next month. People who are not going to be able to pay off their card before interest is charged really need to stop and think whether they really need

the item they’re about to buy. You’ll have to pay for it eventually and that $50 purchase can very quickly cost you $60. • Make the most of your credit card’s rewards program – are people better off using one particular credit card where possible to get better returns. • If you have an offset mortgage account, using a credit card sensibly can help make considerable savings on interest payments, with more money left in the account to pay off debt. • Stay within 30 per cent of your credit limit this Christmas. A large part of your credit card rating depends on the amount of debt you have. Keeping your balances low helps you maintain a good credit score, not to mention being far easier to manage. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. news Christmas has arrived early in East Timor

COOROY RAG

EDUCATIONAL care parcels in the form of 1,200 shoe boxes left from Cooroy and Tewantin State Schools in June have made it through storms and a school-term break to arrive in Timor Leste. There may have been delays in the transfer of the precious cargo, but thanks to determined community effort the educational parcels arrived at Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu, a school about 30 minutes west of Dili where thousands of students were waiting eagerly. The school has about 150 kindergarten students, 250 of primary age and some 200 junior high school kids. With the help of Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy and the Rotary Club of Cooroy, the school was identified as a community school with no help from the ministry of education in Timor. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from Cooroy and Tewantin State Schools to the child opening it at the other end. The Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy and the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy shared the shipment costs because both organisations saw an opportunity to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Principal of Cooroy State School, Jenny Easey said learning of the arrival of the shoe

boxes has brought an emotional reaction from his students and will really bring home the spirit of the project to the hundreds of students who got involved at Cooroy State School. “The kids had a ball putting the care parcels together and it’s great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families, the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy have finally made their way into the hands of the kids who need them most,” Ms. Easey said. “It’s great to see their thoughtfulness come back in the form of heart warming photos and video. We were so excited to see the parcels in the hands of the kids who need them most and we’re excited and proud to have been part of it. “Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy, dice or even marbles. It added something simple but personal to each box,” she said. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Fiona Hutchings said she feels the project has continued to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back and in this case the community recipients have been international ones! This project started a few years ago and has grown this time around to include Cooroy State School. “This project is about community partnership. We’re delighted collaborate with the fine people from the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa who also wanted to help. Len Tyler from Rotary Club of Noosa joined me to present a photo presentation at to the school this week and it looks like this project will continue to expand to involve more state schools as the demand for the shoe boxes increases,” Ms. Hutchings said.

Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club THE next meeting of the Club will be the AGM to be held on Monday 13 February 2012 at the Anglican Church Hall, Miva Street, Cooroy commencing 9.30 am. The speaker will be Dianne Elliott, the current Queensland Council of Garden Clubs Ambassador, who will talk on ‘Well Dressing in Derbyshire UK’. There will be no meeting in January. New members are always welcome. For further information please contact the Secretary, John Fenton on 5470 2683 or mobile 0410 485 285.

SUNSHINE Coast Council has been forced to direct five hinterland service stations across the Region (including Daddows in Cooroy and BP Bob’s in Eumundi) to close in response to Queensland Government Legislative changes to the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2001. The impact of these changes is being felt across the whole State. In response to the legislative changes, council commissioned an independent risk assessment report into eleven (11) sites currently operating as Large Dangerous Goods Locations in the region. This review was limited to those premises that were operating on council owned public footpaths and lands. The subsequent report alerted council to a range of unacceptable community safety and liability risks in relation to the operation of five fuel service stations on the Coast. These businesses have been directed to stop operating. In one of the hinterland towns the business operator will cease the provision of fuel as alternative fuel sources are easily available to the local community and the provision of fuel was only a small part of the business. In another hinterland town the business operator will cease the provision of fuel immediately with no alternatives for fuel sources within that township. This local operator has said that whilst he understood council’s role, he would hope that council representatives act in good faith and in an expeditious manner to assist in resolving the current situation for the sake of his business, his clients as well as the local community in general. “I have been operating the service station for over a decade and in that time, I have contributed every day to local community associations and projects on a voluntarily basis. Council’s actions have now prevented

me from carrying out my current means of earning a living. I don’t think Council realise how much this will affect me and the community that I have to face everyday.” Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, Bob Abbot said the outcomes and recommendations within the independent risk assessment report left council with no option but to act on this issue immediately. “Having received the independent report on the risks, the findings can not be ignored especially given the number of people who frequent some of the locations on a regular basis. “Unfortunately, that’s the reality – and it’s a tough reality particularly so close to Christmas and in the economic climate of today.” “Knowing the consequences and if something happened that caused severe injury or loss of life, neither the responsible officers in council nor the operator would be able to live with themselves I’m sure. “Council understands that businesses are doing it tough and while I know that this process is happening throughout Queensland – in some places where the only fuel bowser for hundreds of kilometres is the one at the general store with fuel tanks sitting under the footpath – it doesn’t make this any easier. “What we are doing is working with the operator to minimise the economic impact to that business and the local community. We will also be working with the operators to decommission the fuel tanks and to provide continued support in relation to the Dangerous Goods Safety Management Act 2001 and the incoming Work Health and Safety Act 2011. “This is not something we wanted to do nor do we feel happy about doing it,” Cr Abbot said. “But at the end of the day, not only is council obligated to help local businesses comply with this legislation but we also have a community obligation – and that is to ensure that our community is kept safe.”

Cooroy Scouts wrap up a busy year WITH the year coming to a close, so too comes the end of the scouting year. The last 2 weeks have included a variety of activities, including a hike and swim by the cubs along a Noosa National Park track. The Indian camp out to Flaxton was also a great success for the Cubs with the bow and arrow making a big hit, along with drum making and the weaving of dreamcatchers. Cubs, Scouts and Venturers all had a fun filled evening for their last group session of the year, including a water fight, a nerf gun fight and a little bit of pizza! Last weekend was also quite enjoyable for all groups involved. Saturday held the Great Sea Battle down in Maroochydore, with many other scouting groups around the region competing against each other on the water.

Sunday was our traditional end of year break-up held at the Cooroy Bowls Club. This was a great afternoon with the Scouting Group getting the chance to play barefoot bowls with some lovely members of the Club, who kindly shared their knowledge for both kids and adults to enjoy. We thank all of those who gave up their Sunday afternoon to share with us. Unfortunately, for any who have supported us by purchasing tickets in our raffle, will have to wait a bit longer for results due to some tickets not being received. Our next Car Boot Sale will be early next year with the date to be advised. I’m sure some of you will have noticed the bollards that have been placed on the scouting grounds. These were put up to help keep our kids that little bit safer, by some of our wonderful volunteers. Thanks to those who helped. We would like to say a special thanks to Peter Smith for his kind donation of the bollards. To Tim from Melco Mitre 10 in Cooroy for his donation of 12 bags of cement, and to Lee at the Hinterland Garden Supplies Centre in Pomona for donating 2m3 of concrete blend. It looks fantastic! We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and good luck to all those with tickets in the raffle. FRIDAY December 2, saw a large number of Eumundi locals and Sunshine Coast Councillors Paul Tatton and Vivienne Griffin attend a morning tea to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the building that houses Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. Two of Eumundi’s oldest residents who attended the morning tea cut the cake and shared some reminiscence about their history of the town. Once the town’s Methodist Church the building opened on December 2, 1911, then became the Uniting Church in 1978 and was bought by Eumundi and District Historical Association in 1995 to house its collection of items and photographs that tell the story of Eumundi and its surrounding district. A full day’s program for the birthday included a Heritage walk by students from Eumundi State School taken by volunteer Lyndall Friend dressed in period costume. Acting out a shopping trip to town she rec-

reated 1911 for the students as they met up with an actors from the local INDEE theatre dressed as various town shopkeepers as well as Eumundi’s famous tree feller Dick Caplick. Discover Eumundi’s new ‘Show and Share’ area was also launched with a fabulous High Tea catered by the ‘Two Old Ladies Tea Shop’ Pomona, with all attendees wearing aprons including the few men present! Prizes were given for the best apron. This new display area will change quarterly and showcase local collectors. Currently teapots from locals Sue Campin and Fran Maguire are on display. There is also a timeline display showing the various uses of the building from its opening until today and is on display until March next year. Discover Eumundi is open 7 days and the centre and its displays are well worth a visit.

THERE is absolutely no argument or debate about this year being the best Christmas in Cooroy yet. Perfect weather, huge attendance, great volunteers, lots of happy smiles, amazing floats in the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, fantastic entertainment, stunning decorations around town and awesome fireworks! THE trendy revamp of an existing café in Maple Street Cooroy, that has set the town talking, is due to the dreams and aspirations of Sharon and Clinton Verster. This go-ahead couple first met in London 15 years ago. Sharon from Australia and Clinton from South Africa. In September, Clinton and Sharon were married at Boreen Point with family from far and wide in attendance. For years Sharon has had a dream of owning her own café. She qualified as a chef in Australia many years ago and has worked with world famous Peter Gordon at the Sugar Club. Her career was very well documented and has received high acclaim for her amazing food, prepared at the Great Eastern Diner, and Clarke’s Restaurant, to name a few.

Their decision to return to Australia from London with two young children was eventually put into action two years ago. They spent the first year in Brisbane and then decided to get out of the rat race and relocate to the countryside. While looking for a house they saw a café in Cooroy that Sharon joked about being the right size and location, if she were to open her own café one day. A short time later the position for a chef at this very same café was advertised and Sharon has been the chef there for the past nine months. Her heart still set o owning her own café, she approached the owner with the idea of purchasing the café, and her offer was accepted. The food at The Mulberry Café is fresh, seasonal, local and tasty, with fresh juices and smoothies for these hot thirsty days. The environment is relaxed and fun with outdoor dining and personal attention. Sharon, Clinton and Skye extend a warm welcome to existing and future patrons.

Mondays & Fridays; if you have some spare time and like to cook we’d love to have you join our team. Starting time is 7am, finishing usually at 11am, but if you have to get away earlier we can accommodate you. Easy-to-follow recipes and advice are provided, so it’s a piece of cake really. Pomona Meals on Wheels is a small organization, so the number of serves is quite low and, we think, the quality kept at a high level because of that. We are always looking for volunteers to help in the kitchen and for delivery drivers, even just one day a month. As well, we are looking for someone with some computer/administration skills to help David with paperwork that’s needed to ensure meals get delivered to the right people; this normally takes about 2 hours, with patient training provided. If you can spare one or two days a week

Morning tea is provided mid-morning, there’s good camaraderie and you get the satisfaction of helping in our community.

Free holiday buses are back SUNSHINE Coast Council in partnership with TransLink, will be providing free travel on all public bus services across the coast from Monday 26 December 2011 to Sunday 8 January 2012. The Free Holiday Buses program, funded by council’s Public Transport Levy, aims to reduce congestion and alleviate parking pressures at popular holiday spots during the festive season. An initiative of council’s Sustainable Transport Strategy, Free Holiday Buses continue to grow in popularity with more than 200,000 passengers taking advantage of the service during the 15 day period last year. Integrated Transport Systems Portfolio, Councillor Vivien Griffin, said the aim of the program is to increase patronage on public transport services and reduce traffic congestion across the Coast. “This is an innovative way to help ensure our locals and visitors have a relaxed and hassle-free option for getting around during this busy period,” Cr Griffin said. “All services are free — you don’t

need to do anything special, just use the service as per usual and keep your money in your pocket. “This is a great opportunity to try out public transport, if you haven’t done so already, and see just how convenient it can be.” Free services include: • TransLink’s Sunshine Coast Sunbus services • Glasshouse Country Coaches (Hinterland Connect and MalenyLandsborough-Beerwah services) • Flexilink services (Boreen Point to Tewantin, Conondale to Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton and Peachester to Beerwah) • Council Cabs. Please note that normal booking procedures apply to Council Cabs and Flexilink services. Timetables for Sunbus services are available from the TransLink website or phone 13 12 30. For Glasshouse Country Coaches, Council Cabs and Flexilink timetables visit council’s Public Transport web pages, or phone (07) 5475 7272.

Traveston properties near halve in value LEAKED Cabinet documents tabled in State Parliament by Member for Gympie David Gibson reveal Mary Valley properties bought by the Labor government for its failed Traveston Dam project have near-halved in value from $449.5 million to just $225 million. Mr Gibson questioned Premier Anna Bligh about the massive devaluation and the impact on Queensland’s already dodgy bottom line. “Will the Premier confirm that the Mary Valley landholdings portfolio asset has recently been valued at $225 million - a devaluation of $220 million on the purchase price of $449.5 million as outlined in this leaked CBRC document,” Mr Gibson asked. Mr Gibson said the Premier did not refute the documents and the near-halving of the Mary Valley property values. “This brings the losses associated with the Traveston Crossing dam debacle to close to half a billion dollars,” he said. This will hit the community hard and reveals that the taxpayers of Queensland will have to foot the bill in reduced prices as properties sell. The Labor government bought the properties without any approval for the dam – another example of the massive waste and a chronic failure to plan. “The whole mess was hatched by Labor after former Premier Beattie flew over the site in a helicopter – Premier Bligh and her incompetent Ministers continued with the debacle until Canberra finally said no.” Mr Gibson said Traveston Crossing Dam and the nurses’ payroll disaster stood as Labor’s iconic failures in the massive debt and deficit that Queensland now faced. He said the local community had been destroyed and the leaked document also revealed a lack of cash to run the Bligh government’s property sale strategy out to 2015-16.

pomona Kin Kin school garden project keeps growing

COOROY RAG

KIN Kin State School and its local community have made a strong commitment to enhancing the school’s capacity to foster/grow tomorrow’s citizen. They have modified facilities and curriculum delivery to align with the school’s affiliation with Earth Smart Schools and the Stephanie Alexander Foundation, although the success of the program cannot reward the conjoined efforts without its volunteers, especially when the students are working with Kitchen/ Garden specialists. University of Southern Queensland (USQ) has also supported the school’s Kitchen Garden program by working with the school to organise more volunteers for the benefit of the students. The school really appreciates the help we receive from volunteers and are grateful to USQ for their support to ensure the program continues to grow and be successful. Danielle and Katherine students from USQ came along to help with making a scarecrow for the vege patch and helped plant tomato seeds. The Kin Kin State School’s P and C have approached local businesses to support the school’s Kitchen Garden program in the way of donations that will be part of a Christmas Raffle. Bunnings, Noosaville has generously donated a 7 piece outdoor setting valued at over $400. Kin Kin’s parents and staff are grateful of our local business’ support and appreciate the efforts of the P & C to ensure the kitchen Garden program is a success for the students.

Are you up for upcycling? The “Sew Crafty Makers” in Cooran are. The “Sew Crafty Makers” is a fabulous and innovative new craft group, run by Deb Baker, at the Cooran Hall every Thursday morning. Everyone is welcome – young and old, experienced or beginner – and the Makers’ caters to an ever-growing crowd of crafters whose design sensibilities tend to the new wave of modern, funky, vintage inspired style. Deb, a graphic designer, who has lived in Cooran for the past 15 years, saw a need to connect like-minded crafty types who have a passion for making things by hand but have found it difficult to meet on a regular basis. Deb states that, “…a lot of the existing sewing and craft groups are specifically held for sewing and quilting. I felt we needed a space that encompassed all areas of craft from sewing, crochet, making softies, scrapbooking through to painting and art journalling. I thought this would be an ideal way to get people out of their homes and workspaces to share ideas and skills. We really want to encourage everyone to come along so we can make a network of people who are inspired to create

in a beautiful space.” It may well be one of the only groups of its kind on the coast. “Our aim is to be inclusive and create an atmosphere for crafty types of all persuasions. I guess the main focus is the process – that is to share, encourage, make mistakes and have a laugh along the way.” Deb is a firm believer in making-do. “I’ve always loved to make things using whatever is at hand, so therefore I am a strong advocate for reusing, recycling and making do. I encourage people to do the same – use pre-loved fabrics and materials to create beautiful, unique upcycled pieces. Upcycling is the other half of the recycling process where old fabrics and products are given more value not less. It’s about converting what some people might call rags into new materials of better quality and higher environmental value.” Deb plans to run formal classes and workshops down the track and is also looking at the idea of running a regular “Craft Gallery” at the beautiful Cooran Hall. Deb’s website, www.sewcraftygoodness. com.au , lists the details of dates , times and information about upcoming events

at the “Sew Crafty Makers”. It is also a site where you can purchase vintage and designer fabrics along with sewing notions, craft supplies and gifts. Deb is on the lookout for local designers who share her philosophy and make beautiful handmade pieces they may want to sell on her ecommerce website. Please contact her at: info@sewcraftygoodness.com.au or telephone : 5485 1191 “Sew Crafty Makers” runs every Thursday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Cooran Hall during school terms. Details of dates and upcoming workshops are listed at the website under “The SC Makers”. Entry is $2.00 and tea and coffee facilities are available. Bring along something you are working on or just come along and be inspired. Eye accidents change lives forever “AN alarming sixty per cent of all eye injuries happen in the workplace, most of which can be prevented. Optometrists Association Australia (OAA) recommends every workplace, regardless of industry, should have eye safety procedures in place,” say local Cooroy optometrists, Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie. “Eye accidents can be avoided by taking simple precautions and making sure employees have appropriate eye protection. This may be in the form of prescription or nonprescription safety eyewear, suitable for the type of work they are doing,” says Heather. “Employers are legally required to provide a safe working environment. It’s imperative that employers and employees work together to ensure eye safety procedures are in place to prevent accidents”, she adds. Eye injuries in the workplace are most commonly caused by grinding and welding related activities, occurring most often within the construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and forestry, fishing and

mining industries. Another common cause is workers walking by or helping others perform tasks without wearing any, or the appropriate, eye protection. “While safety awareness is growing considerably in the working community and we have been regularly dispensing prescription safety spectacles for workers for some time, we feel it is important to remind everyone that the home workshop, or even the garden can be just be just as dangerous a place for eye injuries as the workplace”, says Jenny. “Mowing, woodwork, grinding, welding, handling dangerous chemicals for the swimming pool – these can all be potentially hazardous activities for your eyes” she adds. “Your eyes are just as important in the home as in the workplace, and deserve to be treated with respect.” For further information on prescription safety eyewear or to make an appointment for a visual examination please contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy or phone 5442 5555.

COOROY Dolphins Swim Club are excited to be offering Adult Swim Classes for the first time. The lessons cost $15 per class and run for 45 minutes at the High School swimming pool in Myall Street. If you missed swimming lessons as a child or love to swim but need some help with stroke correction this might be for you. Sadly apart from small children, adults over 50, particularly men, are statistically the next most likely to drown so there is good reason to keep up your swimming skills. It really does not matter how well you swim or if you are a complete non-swimmer. We can accommodate you. However if you are too good, we might bump you up to one of our adult fitness squads. The good news for adults is that most float brilliantly and while there might be some physical limitations, they learn much quicker than children. The classes will focus on learning the main swimming strokes and on water survival techniques such as survival backstroke, sculling, and tread-

ing water. Lessons start with an intensive week of daily lessons – Monday the 16th January – Friday 20th January at 8.00am -8.45 am Then if interest keeps up Tuesday mornings 6.30 am -7.15 am starting the 21st January Saturday mornings 8.00 am -8.45 am starting the 24th January Cooroy Dolphins also run a fitness squad for serious adult swimmers at 5.30-6.30am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (currently fully subscribed). There is also capacity for a 6.30am-7.30am squad on the same days if there are enough people interested. Different fee structures apply to the squads, which we can explain if you are interested. Please call the club on 5442 6456 to register your interest for our lessons. You can leave a message if the phone is unattended. Alternatively call/txt Nikolee Ansell our adults swim teacher on 0407875850. Nikolee has taught adults before in a special over 55’s programme and loved the experience.

health Festive food warning for Cooroy pet owners

VETS are advising Cooroy pet owners to be careful about the kinds of leftovers they feed their pets this festive season. There are a number of common foods that can cause potentially fatal health complications for your pet, ranging from nausea and vomiting to potentially fatal organ complications. Common foods dangerous to pets: • Avocados – Contain a dangerous toxin which can damage the heart, lungs and tissue of many different animals. • Macadamia Nuts – Can be toxic to dogs. Symptoms will likely occur within 12 hours and can include vomiting, hyperthermia and elevated heart rate. • Chocolate – May be toxic or lethal to dogs and other domestic animals, even in small quantities. • Turkey Skin, Pork Crackling, Sausages and other fatty meats – Can lead to pancreatitis due to the high fat content. • Onions and garlic – Can cause gastric irritation and anaemia if they consume these vegetables in large quantities. • Grapes and Raisins – Can cause severe acute kidney failure. The best food you can feed your animal is quality pet food which contains the right nutrients required for their diet. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic you should contact a veterinarian or a veterinary specialist immediately.

Joint arthritis ARTHRITIS refers to inflammation and degeneration of the joint surface and surrounding tissues. It can happen in almost any joint of the body although the hands, feet, knees and hips are probably the most troublesome sites. Arthritis can occur at any age, although it most commonly occurs as we age, and it can have various causes. Osteoarthritis refers to a wear and tear process within the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune condition with inflammation as a key feature. Arthritis can be caused by joint infection (septic arthritis), by gout (depositing uric acid crystals within the joint), by viral infections (e.g. Ross River Fever), and can be associated with other conditions like lupus, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, etc. A family history of arthritis is also relevant as well as previous trauma to a joint. Sometimes one type of arthritis can overlap with another, e.g. gout on top of osteoarthritis. By maintaining healthy lifestyles with regular exercise and good diets we can to a limited degree prevent arthritis, e.g. heavy alcohol intake is associated with gout, but at the end of the day we are all potentially vulnerable. If we take osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, as an example, what treatments are available? Regular exercise that does not stress the joint unduly but provides the surrounding muscles with strength and flexibility is important. For example, swimming or cycling in

knee or hip arthritis. Various supplements for joint inflammation are available such as glucosamine, chondroitin and fish oil. The evidence from clinical trials for these supplements is not greatly convincing but they do work certainly for some people and they are safe. Trying them for a month or two is certainly worthwhile. Paracetamol is a safe painkiller if taken at the correct dosage and whilst anti-inflammatory medicines are also effective their benefit has to be balanced against potential side effects like reflux and fluid retention. When would I think about joint replacement? This mostly relates to knee and hip and to a lesser extent, shoulder replacements. Pain and loss of function are the main factors that will determine the decision. These are big operations and the problem has to be significant before embarking on a joint replacement. But neither should you suffer needlessly and many patients have joint replacements with good benefit in their 80’s. Over 95% of patients are pain free and satisfied after a hip replacement. 95% of these replacements will last 10 years. Revisions are possible if there are problems with a joint replacement. Several of the doctors at Maple St work closely with local orthopaedic doctors so come and visit us if you wish to discuss some more. Dr Kenny Corbett Maple Street Surgery Cooroy

REGULAR exercise offers a range of health benefits but finding the combination that’s right for you can be tricky. Local fitness expert Lucy Cloonan has tailored fitness classes for people at all ages and stages of life including new mums, menopausal women, and the generally active or inactive seeking change. Group classes run weekly in Cooroy, Eumundi and Yandina. “Good health and fitness is vital throughout all stages of life and finding a class that suits is part of the battle,” says Lucy whose small classes can improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, core strength and flexibility. All classes combine a variety of activities and equipment that help achieve great results while Lucy’s qualifications reflect her interest in health, nutrition, injury rehabilitation, pre and post natal exercise and older adults training. Current classes include circuit classes, toning classes and mums and bubs classes. Gentle exercise sessions for older men and women, as well as people with disabilities, will be starting in January. As a Menofitness instructor Lucy is qualified to help women understand the effects of nutrition and exercise on hormone balance. “This can ease women through the stages of menopause enabling them to maintain a healthy and youthful disposition”, said Lucy. A Menofitness class will also be starting in January. “As well as getting fit, the social aspect of Lucy’s classes is excellent. Meeting people at the same stage of life has added extra significance to attending each week”, says Eumundi mum, Zoe. If group fitness is not for you, Lucy offers personal training that provides an individualised program that will look after your fitness, health and nutritional needs. If you are interested in learning more about classes or personal training, please call Lucy on 0412 489313 or visit www.lucycloonanfitness.com.

Keep your body merry this festive season WELL Christmas is nearly here, yet again. As physio’s, we often seen a great deal of people who either injure themselves over the festive season, or who find that their aches and pains increase over this period. So, why is that you ask? Well there are probably a number of reasons. Firstly, we all tend to take a break from our regular exercise routines, and over indulge in some Christmas cheer. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining muscle strength, co-ordination and joint mobility. It takes a long time to improve muscle strength, but only a short period of rest to undo all of that good work. Without regular exercise, the receptors in our joints that send feedback to the brain don’t function as well as they should. This can increase the likelihood of an injury while sending some fast ones down the pitch in backyard cricket, or while hurtling down the ‘slip and slide’. Alcohol is another major contributor to festive season injuries. Most people are aware of the balance effects of alcohol, so it is easy to see how it leads to increased falls and ligament damage. La-

dies tottering around on high heels at Christmas parties are at a significantly higher risk of hurting an ankle or knee, especially if consuming alcohol. So ladies, no dancing in soaring high heels after a few champers’ at the Christmas party! At least take off the heels! Overnight visits to relatives houses often involve sleeping in a strange bed, on a strange mattress and pillow. This often results in a wry neck upon waking, which is certainly not what you want during the Christmas break. Remember to take you own pillow when possible, and stretch your neck and back regularly to avoid muscle tightness. So there you have it! Keep active, limit the alcohol (especially while wearing those killer heels) and stretch regularly to avoid a painful Christmas break. If you do happen to injure yourself this holiday period, seek help straight away. The sooner your injuries are attended to, the quicker you will be back to the holiday fun. Craig and Rebecca Steele operate Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Girls jubilant with Grand Final victory

ON Saturday 26th November, the year 8, NDSHS girls Touch Football team, played their U16 Division, B Grade Grand Final in the Noosa Touch Asssociation Competition. The team consisting of Cpt Chantelle Filjak, Caitlin Wark, Natalie Kelly, Crysta Nalder, Lauryn Webb, Marissa and Martyka Schlumpf, Maddy Canavan, and (absent Daria Draper), were victorious against the St Andrews Ravens with a convincing 10 - nil win to cap off the season. The girls all played extremely well, and definitely left their best game until last. The team has been helped along enormously this year by the coaching efforts of Luke Quinlivin. Caitlin Wark also received the Noosa Touch Assoc ‘Junior Most Valuable Person Award’ for 2011, and also the ‘Encouragement Award’ for a Junior Referee during the season. The Cooroy Crushers U12 girls Touch Football team consisting of Cooroy SS students Amy Kosovich, Ashleigh Wark, Bronte Hamilton, Cheyenne Flynn, Elly www.scrubbusters.com.au Gadd, Ellen Schofeldt, Kyra Graham, Alice Gillis, Sarah Stacey from Pomona SS, and Maddie, were victorious in their A Grade Grand Final at the Noosa Touch Assoc. The girls played a very hard fought game against the Sunshine Beach Warriors. The two previous games played between these teams had each team with a win, so the final was always going to go down to the line. The Final didn’t disappoint with the scores drawn 5-5 at full time, putting the game into a ‘drop off’, (each side dropping • NEW & USED PARTS • ENGINE RECOND a player every 2 minutes in • ALL MECHANICAL REPAIRS • CYLINDER HEAD REPAIRS overtime until a team scores). Cooroy. Organisers Melissa Radke and Matt McNally aim to create a competition to promote fair competition fitness, increased skill and most importantly make it community friendly for people to get to know new people. Matt says they aim to create a healthy hard fought competition and he looks for-

ward to watching it unfold over the next 3 months. Melissa on the other hand looks forward to the competition growing over the coming years. All donations and raised funds get donated back to help the local soccer club – Cooroora United. The competition started on 17 October and will finish on 30 January 2012. There are 6 teams doing battle for the glory of being champions and having their photo on the CUFC Champion’s Wall. We have a good registration of players from Maroochydore to Gympie and players range in ages from 14 to 65. All are welcome. Supporters are also welcome and any gold coin donation would be greatly appreciated. We will have a 2 week break over Christmas and the competition will finish up in time for pre season 11 A Side training. The teams are identified by coloursRed, White, Grey, Green, Yellow and Blue and all teams are looking for a sponsor so if you have a favourite colour and would like to sponsor please contact the above people. This year is supporters year and we encourage the public to come down and be part of the excitement. What else are your doing on Monday nights? Enjoy your Mondays with soccer.
