Christmas in Cooroy was another huge success with over 10000 people enjoying the cornucopia of Christmas activities over the weekend. Friday night kicked off with the opening of the Cooroy Live Life Pharmacy photo exhibition in the Butter Factory Arts Centre with Cr Tony Wellington judging the amazing photos and awarding Peta Hempsall and Sandie Chandler first and second prize.

At the turning on of the beautiful Ri-con Christmas tree everyone had an absolute ball with the tree looking even more spectacular with more decorations than ever before. Eight stars on the tree were dedicated to loved ones that are no longer with us and their stories are on the wall adjacent to the tree which are sure to bring a tear to the eye! The carols at the turning on of the tree added a lovely touch to the night also. Continued on Page 2

Merry Christmas in Cooroy From Page 1 SATURDAY kicked off with the Cooroy Fish N Chips Santa Sack Races which really set the scene for the rest of the day with some good old fashioned fun and laughter. Next up was the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race which raised over $1,300 for the Leukaemia Foundation with nearly 70 competitors donned in Santa suits racing up the main street of Cooroy. Spectators lined the street for the ever popular Bendigo Bank street parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard this year. Forty businesses and community groups participated and

the Fairy Tales and Legends theme was a big hit with young and old alike. Tadpoles Early Learning Centre held onto the title of Best Float for the second year but it was a tough competition with Cooroy State School and Bendigo Bank close on their tails in the scoring stakes according to judges Cr Frank Wilkie, Cr Frank Pardon and Cr Sandy Bolton. The East Side Tuggers were ecstatic to retain their title in the Hinterland Dental East versus West Tug of War for the fourth year running. West side have gone into training early to secure a strong team for 2016! The free activities kept people entertained all

evening with the free Cooroy Rag rides, the CJ Taxation sponsored face painting, the Santa visit sponsored by Gelignite Jacks, the fantastic entertainment program sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA and of course the ever popular spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy RSL. “There is a long list of people to thank for this event including the sponsors, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Police and our MCs who all gave up copious amounts of time. It’s the fantastic community spirit that Cooroy has that makes this event so special,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. Cooroy RV Stop opens

The Team at Hinternoosa wish all our Clients a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Enjoy Life away from the Hustle & Bustle The Rainbow Lorikeet RV Club recently enjoyed a few days stopover in Cooroy NOOSA Council has open a trial RV stop in Cooroy to support hinterland tourism. The Cooroy RV Stop, at 17 Mary River Road, offers motorhome travellers easy access to Cooroy from the highway and serves as a gateway to Noosa’s hinterland, complementing Tourism Noosa’s new Noosa Country Drive initiative. The facility caters for up to 40 fully selfcontained recreational vehicles (RVs), and includes a chemical toilet dump point. Noosa Council Executive Officer Narelle Reid said Council saw the project as an

economic development opportunity for the town. “The local chamber of commerce, community groups and residents called for an RV stop in Cooroy to encourage the growing motorhome tourist market to stop in and explore Noosa’s hinterland,” she says. “Council is pleased to be able to support economic development in Cooroy and surrounding towns with this initiative, which we hope fulfils a need for a low-cost no-frills option for self-drive visitors to explore Cooroy and other towns.”

Council chose the Mary River Road site, behind the Combined Coastal Car Club premises, for its location, which is within walking distance of Cooroy’s main street. Council will assess the RV Stop’s success in 12 months. The RV Stop, which a caretaker will manage, offers fully self-contained RVs a maximum four-night stay at $10 per vehicle per night. To book, visit Council’s website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au/cooroy-rvstopover<http://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ cooroy-rv-stopover>

New custodians sought for Memorial Hall THE meeting about the future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall at Cooroy RSL on December 9th was well attended and it is clear that our community is passionate about our beautiful old lady. The RSL has made the decision to relinquish the custodianship of the Hall at a point in time that a new custodian can take over. For this to be approved, the RSL are applying to the State Government to separate the RSL Club from the Hall so that the original Deed of Grant can be set aside – the State Government who had a representative in attendance have indicated that this would happen. The RSL Club will also write to Noosa Council informing them of their intentions, asking for assistance as required. There were 2 motions put forward – the first of which was amended to include the second motion making a new motion which was then passed by a large majority of attendees. This motion essentially proposed the setting up of a new steering committee for the Memorial Hall, made up from interested parties from the local community and local groups with Noosa Council having overall responsibility, similar to how the Lower Mill Board was originally set up in 2004. Expressions of interest for people to join the steering committee were invited and ap-

proximately 30 people have now put their names forward. This committee will meet at a date in the future to form a management committee for the Memorial Hall. Until the original Deed of Grant to the Cooroy RSL is set aside, they are still responsible for the hall however, it is unlikely it will be re-opened in the short term due to ongoing liability issues and the difficulty of obtaining an independent review on the safety issues at this time of year. Once a new deed has been issued to the new custodian body – the Cooroy RSL will transfer funds held in the Memorial Hall account to the new custodians. It is unclear at present as to when the Memo-

rial Hall will be in a position to be re-opened. There are a number of health and safety codes which need to be addressed and met including Fire, Electrical Safety, Disability Access, Catering and the Toilets. Until these are met, it would be extremely difficult to get the building and its varied uses insured. This will not be a quick process, everything will take time but it is a step in the right direction and once settled, the Memorial Hall should have a bright future but it and the new custodians will still need ongoing community support. In 1885, a search of Government Gazettes and newspapers for Cooroy will find little more than a mention of Cooroy Road, being a request to the Widgee Divisional Board by sawmillers, Dath Henderson & Co. for repairs to the road (which would have been used mainly by timbergetters hauling to the Company’s mill at Tewantin.) and a listing of Albert Henry Wilkin, Mount Cooroy, Tewantin as a Justice of the Peace. A township of Cooroy was then years away, with no settlement within the area of

Dath Henderson & Co.’s holdings until the land was repurchased by the Queensland Government in 1907, surveyed into agricultural farms and town lots and offered for sale in 1908. The company, with sawmills in Brisbane and Tewantin, were reluctant to surrender the land which had been acquired for the timber resources. A nucleus of a settlement began at Cooroy with the completion of the railway in 1891 when timber and produce was then railed to Brisbane. History records early Cooroy as a col-

Development of the Noosa District BEFORE European settlement, the inhabitants of the Noosa district were the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi). The territory of these nomadic tribes stretched from Childers to Caboolture, westwards to Murgon and Biggenden, eastwards to the coast, including Fraser Island. 1824-1842: The first Europeans to live in the Noosa District were convict absconders from the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. Because of their white skin, they were welcomed by the Aborigines as ghosts of deceased members of the tribe. 1863: Saw-miller, William Pettigrew, on his voyage of exploration to the Noosa River and lakes in search of timber resources, sketched the peaks as Coolum, Nindery, Peregia (Peregian), Eewa, Coorooey and Noosa Headland from 12 miles out to sea on the vessel “Queensland”. By December of that year, timber-getters were working in the area. Logs rafted down the river were transported by steamer to Brisbane. 1870s-1880s: Selectors took up land in the Cootharaba, Kin Kin, Doonan and Mount Cooroy areas. Early agricultural crops included sugar cane, grown by Dawson and Pierce at Cooloothin Creek and Albert Wilkin near Mount Cooroy. 1884: John Kinmond, timbergetter and early selector of land at Buderim and Cootharaba, selected 160 acres at Mount Cooroy whilst residing at Tewantin. 1885: Sawmillers, Dath Henderson & Co. acquire 5507 acres (2230 hectares) stretching westwards from Mount Cooroy including the present township area. Request to Widgee Divisional Board for repairs to Cooroy Road. 1889 Railway from Gympie to Cooran completed. Cooran became a busy halfway stop for coaches plying to Tewantin. Survey of fourth section of the North Coast Railway between Yandina and Cooran completed by CB Steele. Site selected for Cooroy Station. (Gazetted 31 May 1890.) 1899: Architectural drawings produced for Shelter Shed at Cooroy Railway Station. Alterations 1908/9. 1904-6: Settlers, mostly dairy farmers from the Northern Rivers District of New South Wales, moved to Cooran, Kin Kin, Pinbarren and Pomona districts as land was opened for agri-

cultural farms. 1906: Pomona town allotments offered for sale. JL Boden established a store in Cooroy railway yard awaiting the survey and sale of town allotments 1907: Land repurchased from saw-millers, Dath Henderson & Co. and surveyed into agricultural farms and town allotments as Cooroy Estate. 1908: First sale of agricultural land and town allotments, Cooroy Estate. The majority of the settlers were dairy farmers from the Northern Rivers district of New south Wales. 1909: Due chiefly to campaigning by the new settlers on the Cooroy Estate, Noosa Shire was proclaimed; its area excised from Widgee Shire and a small portion of Maroochy Shire; effective following elections in April 1910. New road to Tewantin opened. 1910: Noosa Shire Council held the first meeting at Cooran. Cooroy Hall, beside the Victory Hotel, became temporary Shire Office. Cooroy had made rapid progress with business firmly established. The building of a Shire Hall at Cooroy had begun. 1911: Due to agitation from Cooran and Pomona residents, a referendum was held to decide the location of Council offices. Noosa Shire Council offices established at Pomona; the building now utilised as a museum. 1915: Wide Bay Co-operative Dairy Association established a butter factory at Cooroy. It was replaced by the present building in 1931. 1928: Improved Cooroy-Tewantin Road officially opened. The proceedings took place beneath Tewantin’s historic fig tree. Lifesavers’ Club formed at Cooroy (Noosa Heads Lifesaving Club). The members were mostly farmers’ sons from the Cooroy area. 1929: Doonella and Weyba Bridges opened, linking Tewantin to Noosa and Golden Beach (Sunshine Beach) financed by the sale of coastal land to TM Burke & Co.. 1940s: Electricity connected to the towns in the district but did not reach the farms until 1950s. 1959/60: The name Sunshine Coast adopted. The South Coast had become the Gold Coast so business people of the Near North Coast desired a more attractive name for the region. 1965: Six Mile Dam constructed (later named

SPECIAULP

Lake Macdonald) to supply water for Noosa Shire. 1976: Wide Bay Co-operative Dairy Association Cooroy Branch Butter Factory closed. Since the closure of the district’s butter factories, dairy farms have given way to rural residential. With the huge influx of new residents, lifestyles and cultural interests have changed. 1980: Noosa Shire Council moved to new premises at Tewantin in December. Officially opened February 1982. 1984: Range section of the Cooroy-Tewantin Road completed to bypass hazardous bends. It follows the approximate route of the original steep road. 1985: Cooroora Historical Society’s Museum officially opened in former Shire Office at Pomona. (Society was formed in 1981.) 2000: Cooroy’s two sawmills were acquired by the State Government and closed. The sawmill land, at the northern end of the township, has since been transferred to Noosa Shire Council for community use. 2000-2007: The Noosa district founded on timber, fishing, dairying and agricultural pursuits has now a more diverse range of industries. The coastal region, always popular as a holiday destination, has become a thriving tourist Mecca. 2008: Noosa Shire absorbed into the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. 2014: Noosa Shire Council reformed after residents voted for de-amalgamation from Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Christmas – a time for us all I am normally a happy chap, I read the daily news, But when I survey the world today, it brings on an attack of the blues. This year it’s appalling, what the media is showing, The world seems to be in an intolerable mess, no one seems to know where we are going. We have had the almost daily fare of senseless shooting, And of the national political hobby of citizen persecuting. Anyone could get a gun, and slay one or many fellow men, Domestic violence, road rage, plenty of copy for the news men. But away with all that mayhem, it’s time for Christmas celebration, We are fortunate indeed, in this peaceful nation, To live in freedom, friendliness, understanding, good will, A time of peace, and friendship, no time for the shades of ill-will. We must give thanks and thought for the Christmas season, And be grateful for this wonderful reason. The Rag sends greetings from all of us here, With best wishes for Christmas and a happy New Year. May your days be filled with love and laughter and fun, And the blessing of Christmas embrace everyone. It is the misfortune of old age that although you can put things out of your head, you can’t put them out of your feelings. Believe me.

Thanks to everyone who sent in entries for the “Find the Rolled Up Rag” during the year. We’ve had a great response with people stopping us in the street trying to weasle out a clue or two. There’s been some tricky ones and sometimes we’ve forgotten ourselves what ad we’ve hidden it in so we’ve had to pour over the paper too. We accidentally left it out once so we can sympathise with your frustration on that occasion. But we’ll be continuing the competition in the new year. Last edition’s winner is Brandon Schlumpf of Cooroy who found the Rolled Up Rag in the Cooroy Drapery ad on Page 12. Entries close January 14, 2016. Please note: There is no “Rolled Up Rag” in this issue.

COOROY RAG RETIRED Noosa District State High School computer technician Rick Phillips is volunteering his time to assist with the exciting new robot program at the Cooroy Library. The Cooroy Library is the first Australian public library to deliver a robots program using a fully programmable NAO humanoid robot. This program provides fun and practical coding and computer programming training for adults and young people who will use these new skills and bring the robot to life. The NAO robot interacts well with humans and shares many humanoid traits such as walking, talking, telling stories, playing games and singing. To see the NAO robot in action and learn how he works, phone: (07) 5329 6555 to book in a free session.

Council goes to market as bus trial hits a bump NOOSA Council is looking for a new vehicle to power its electric bus trial. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said Council was in the process of cancelling the chosen manufacturer’s contract after it advised that it couldn’t deliver the buses by the agreed deadline. “These delays are unfortunate and on a personal note I am disappointed the trial won’t begin during my time in Council, but I am confident we’ll see electric buses on Noosa’s roads next year, given Council’s strong support for the trial and keen interest from a number of manufacturers,” Cr Playford said. Council’s Planning and Infrastructure Director Martin Drydale said technical issues with the bus air conditioning systems were to blame for the hold up. Mr Drydale added: “Electric bus technology is rapidly

evolving so holding off until next year will allow us to investigate new technology that wasn’t available when we first began our planning, plus we may also be able to source the buses from an Australian supplier now.” A pre-feasibility study found electric buses to be a cheaper public transport option compared to diesel buses when deployed on short-haul routes. “They can be recharged with renewable energy and given that they offer reduced emissions, they represent a cleaner, greener alternative to diesel,” Mr Drydale said. Deploying electric buses stands to be a first for Queensland, offering Noosa a unique and marketable public transport offering. “Council looks forward to trialling electric buses on Noosa’s network next year,” Mr Drydale said.

Christmas budgeting Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WELL, we’re nearly there! Christmas is upon us and many of us are wondering where the year has gone. For many of us, December and the festive season proves to be one of the busiest times of our year. Presents, work drinks, family functions and school holidays can also keep us feeling a little broke. December and January is traditionally the most expensive time of the year for households. A few tips to financially survive the season are: • Budget before hand. Write a list including anticipated costs and then try to stick to it. • Try to save in advance. As I mentioned in previous columns if you saved $20 a week for a year you would have over $1,000. Some banks like our Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona Agency offers Christmas Club accounts to assist with savings for

December. • Start your shopping early. This can effectively spread the financial commitment over many weekly pays or pensions. This way it won’t feel too cumbersome all at once. • Try not to put everything on the credit card. This debt will only be there to pay later. Credit cards are great but they can easily get out of control. • Secret Santa or a Kris Kringle present giving can greatly reduce your cost. Everyone still gets a present and it does not cost as much. • At parties and BBQ’s don’t cater for 50 people when only 20 are coming. In addition share the work load and cost but

getting everyone to pitch in. Christmas and the holidays is usually a great time for everyone. Many have at least a few days off work to spend with family and friends. If you’re lucky enough to be one of them, enjoy your wellearned break. I look forward to writing for you and sharing some financial tips again in 2016. Have a beautiful, peaceful and safe Christmas and Happy New Year! news Sandy Bolton to stand for mayor of Noosa Council

COOROY RAG

COUNCILLOR Sandy Bolton has shared her intentions as the Noosa Council election campaign prepares to move into high gear. Speaking in front of gathered media and supporters at Tewantin’s RSL Park this morning, Sandy confirmed she would contest the Noosa Council election to be held in March 2016 as a mayoral candidate. Sandy feels strong leadership, with a passion for good governance and sustainability should be the mantra for the new mayor, and believes her straight forward, grass roots style will provide the stability the community deserves. “Through its previous Councils, Noosa has been blessed with solid leadership for many years and it’s crucial the new council gets off on the right foot. Good leadership is earned every day, and I’m excited about putting the same work ethic I’ve had in place these past few years in a leadership capacity,” she said. Sandy believes a major

role for Council in the next term will be the diversification of Noosa’s economy. One that will provide opportunity and prosperity whilst protecting our environment and staying true to Noosa’s community values. “There will be great expectations of this new council. Tough decisions will need to be made. I believe our community wants clarity about how the next mayor will provide leadership towards a strong future for our residents and families without jeopardising the lifestyle they have chosen. “We must continue to build the culture of our Council to the level of openness and customer service that Noosa Council is renowned for. There must be a culture of common sense, efficiency and solutions through committed strategic planning and simpler processes. I have the experience and temperament to do that job well,” she added. Sandy said that if elected

she looks forward to working with the Noosa community in the development of their own future. “There will be new infrastructure requirements that need addressing as the new council delivers its new Planning Scheme. There are also issues continuing to frustrate our community. Projects such as the Beckmans Road duplication in Tewantin, the Ernest

Street T-junction in Noosaville, Myall Street in Cooroy and Six Mile bridge on the Pomona Kin Kin Road must be made a priority, and will be under my leadership,” Sandy said. She added that focussing on innovation and technology will be part of her plan to build a diversified economy. As a result existing businesses can do better business and new businesses have

better opportunity. “Strengthening Noosa’s economy is achievable. It will require new ideas and innovative approaches. But building a stronger community means bringing people together to ensure that the environmental, economic and cultural concerns and priorities of our residents are reflected in both the discussion and the decisions made by Council,” Sandy concluded.

Noosa Country Drive launches in Cooroy THE hinterland and country villages of Noosa are set to get a tourism boost with an influx of visitors thanks to a new initiative launched by Tourism Noosa, the Noosa Country Drive. Officially launched at the Cooroy Library last week, the Noosa Country Drive is an interactive website that offers a personal way to experience Noosa’s beautiful country and hinterland areas. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the Noosa Country Drive offers plenty of different options for discovering all that the Noosa Hinterland has to offer. “Whether driving, biking or walking, visitors can

create their very own touring route with the interactive map. The Drive highlights the villages of Boreen Point, Cooran, Cooroy, Doonan, Eumundi, Kin Kin, Pomona and Tinbeerwah and visitors can browse and add attractions for each village or take a suggested drive with three available showcasing a Northern Loop, Central Loop and Southern Loop”. “In addition to launching the Noosa Country Drive, we have an accompanying printed Noosa Country Drive map showcasing the Noosa Country Drive which will be available from the Noosa Visitor Information Centres in Hastings Street and Tewantin as well as accommodation opera-

tors throughout the region” said Mr Massingham. Councillor Sandy Bolton said the Noosa Country Drive is a fabulous initiative for the Noosa hinterland. “The Noosa Country Drive is a welcomed tool for existing and new visitors to the region, and showcases the diverse range of unique activities and attractions in our beautiful rural areas” said Cr Bolton. “For locals what a great way to explore parts of Noosa that they may not have discovered. A night away ‘glamping’ is a holiday in itself!” “It is fantastic to see such a detailed site highlighting what our beautiful Noosa hinterland towns have to offer. It’s a fantastic re-

WHILE people generally associate drought with the rural sector it is a fact that the drought has now engulfed the entire community of Longreach and Western Queensland. The towns and businesses as well as farmers and agricultural businesses are suffering from decreased cash flow (anecdotal evidence of reductions up to 70% over the course of the drought) and the knock on effects of decreased employment which causes people to pack up and leave. Thanks to a very generous donation from now retired local business entrepreneurs Tex and Robyn Pipke, the Rotary Club of Cooroy is delighted to be forwarding $3,000 to the Longreach Rotary Club to assist with their drought relief initiatives. “The donation from Tex and Robyn will provide much needed relief for our Queensland neighbours suffering through no fault of their own,” said Linda Morrell, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy. “We are delighted that

they have asked Rotary to manage the funds as 100% of the money will be given to those in need,” said Linda. “The reality is that there have been three failed wet seasons and predictions for this “wet” (They rely on summer rainfall) are far from encouraging with consistent talk of an El Nino event. “Agriculture is the main industry for the towns on Western Queensland. When the farmers have no income, it affects town businesses and whole communities. This cash drought leads to reduced employment, forcing families to move away which means there are fewer children in school. Longreach Primary School has 120 less students than 2 years ago, about one-third of the student numbers. This reduces the number of teachers employed; further reducing services and business activity in town. The local Council run Hostel has too few students, and will close its doors at the end of 2015. This was an essential place for youth from as far away as Boulia to stay

and access primary and high-school education,” said Linda. Robyn and Tex Pipke said they feel it was their time to step up and help the rural people who have worked so hard and given so much and now are in jeopardy of losing it all. “It is heartbreaking to spend your last dollars on ammunition to kill off the stock that is highly prized and then not have enough fuel to bury them. It is so saddening and so many

who benefit from the farmer don’t even know about it. We hope our small effort brings a brief respite to some of these very needy families over the Christmas holidays,” said the Pipkes. Rotary are tackling this initiative in two ways. Rotary kick started a new group in April this year, called the Western Queensland Drought Appeal, which has so far distributed over 200 preloaded visa cards to

drought-affected graziers in our region. Money donated in this way may be used by families to purchase whatever they need - be that food or school clothing or animal feed or whatever their individual requirements are. This money may then be circulated locally assisting in maintaining local supply chains, minimising loss of employment in the local tertiary sector and generating a financial multiplier effect for local enterprise. David Phelps, President Longreach Rotary, said “We are humbled by the support that we are receiving in our district, and the support is going a long way to helping people through the drought. One key is that our communities have come together, as bush communities tend to do, to support each other and work together.” Please assist with the Western Queensland Drought Appeal, contact Linda, Rotary Club of Cooroy Email: president@cooroyrotary.org.au Mobile 0403 172 534 – Every little bit helps.

Christmas has arrived early in East Timor EDUCATIONAL care parcels in the form of the 1,600 shoe boxes left from Cooroy, Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools in June have made it through storms and a school-term break to ar-

rive in Timor Leste. Thanks to a collective and determined community effort the educational parcels have arrived safely at Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu. It’s a school about 30 minutes west of

Dili and thousands of students were waiting eagerly to receive one, as seen on a video shown at Cooroy State School assembly last week. The school officially has 150 kindergarten students,

250 of primary age and some 200 junior high school kids, but the surrounding area of need stretches to include hundreds more. With the help of the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy, the school was identified as a community school with no help from the ministry of education in Timor. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from the schools to the child opening it at the other end. The Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola and the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy shared the shipment costs because both organisations saw an opportunity to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Cooroy State School Deputy-Principal, Karina Ramsay said learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes

Our Cooroy community celebrates as the shoe boxes arrive in East Timor has brought an emotional reaction from his students. To the hundreds of students who got involved at the school, the spirit of the project really hit home once they saw video of the arrival of the shoe boxes. “The students and our school all have a real connection to this project. They had a ball putting the care parcels together and it’s great to see the collective efforts of the kids, their families and the teams at Bendigo Bank put those shoe boxes into the hands of the kids who need them most,’’ Mrs. Ramsay said.

“It’s great to see their thoughtfulness come full circle and we’re excited and proud to have been part of it all again this year. Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box,” she added. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards agreed and said he feels the project

continues to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back and in this case the community recipients have been international ones. This project is about community partnership and feels as relevant now as when we started in 2008. “We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with Rotary and it was great to see some of the kids recognise their shoe box in the video and photos. We all love this project and are committed to doing it all again in 2016" he said.

Noosa District State High School Year 12 student Brittany Worboys was accepted to study at NIDA in Sydney next year. NDSHS staff are very proud of Brittany’s success, especially, the Head of Art, Design and Production, Anne Collingwood. “This a tremendous accolade for Brittany, to be accepted at such a young age into one of the country’s most prestigious arts institutions. We wish her every success,” Ms Collingwood said. NIDA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (Properties and Objects) introduces students to prop-making and object-making techniques through education and training in life drawing, metalwork, woodwork, sculpture, mould making, pattern making, scenic art,

technical drawing, puppetry, electronics, joinery, set dressing, film studies and model making for theatre, film, television and events. Brittany created an artwork about William Shakespeare as a part of the NIDA admissions selection requirements, and with a bit of creative thinking and problem solving she was also able to incorporate this into her art assessment for semester 2. “It was a very conceptual art work, involving research on William Shakespeare, working with resin, (and) working with laser cutters,” Ms Collingwood said. Brittany’s father Stewart Worboys attributed much of Brittany’s success to the Year 12 career development transition support course run by Noosa District State High School undertaken by the senior stu-

dents in June each year. “It was during this week (that) Brittany discovered NIDA through a session run by guidance officer Damien Quinn,” Mr Worboys said. Students research future jobs they would like to obtain employment within and plan a timeline, discussing

this with their parents and guidance officer during the second half of the year. “This led to Brittany applying for a position and the rest is history,” Mr Worboys said. Mr Worboys thanked Brittany’s teachers for the work they put into her dream of becoming a stu-

dent of NIDA, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Properties and Objects. Only six people across Australia are accepted into this course. Brittany will spend the next 3 years in Sydney learning the required skills to produce movie sets and stage production pieces.

How can you give your kids money smarts? By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* CHILDREN learn a lot from their parents when it comes to money—arm yours for financial success. When it comes to money, your own behaviour and attitudes can strongly influence your kids. Help your kids to be money smart by demonstrating positive money habits and teaching them valuable lessons as they grow older. Teaching money smarts Money management has always been important for children to learn about, especially as they grow into young adults and face the big wide world out there! It’s even more the case today, in an ever-growing digital world—kids are trained to become consumers from a young age. What’s more, it can be hard for kids to understand what they can’t see. And shopping online—where there’s no exchange of physical cash—makes it easy for kids to miss learning about the real value of

money. The good news is the desire to buy things does provide an opportunity to encourage healthy financial habits though, like saving, budgeting and working to earn their money. The best principles to teach kids just vary at different ages. Here are some tips for building money smarts no matter what age your kids are. Young children: Making money tangible for young children can be helpful. Your child may benefit from seeing money visibly accumulate in a jar. You can convey the way money works by playing games that show your child how many coins are needed to buy particular items—and how spending reduces the quantity of money in the jar. Primary school kids When children reach school age, introduce more practical examples by connecting household jobs they do with money as the

reward. It can be a good time to set up a savings account for your child1 and to learn basic goal setting and budgeting. Teens: As your child gets older, a weekend or holiday job can help them appreciate that working leads to earning money. It’s also a good stage to help your child start setting goals, say to buy a new mobile phone, while meeting short-term expenses like buying snacks, clothes and going out. Young adults: Once children are earning money on a regular basis, if they’re still living at home, then it’s time to discuss living expenses, including board and chipping in for food and utilities. It’s also an idea to develop their interest in building wealth for the future. Be sure also to cultivate an understanding and interest in their superannuation and how starting early can make a big difference. Talking digital: Money les-

sons need to be adapted for digital spending. To do this it’s a good idea to involve kids in the digital purchasing process when you’re doing it yourself. Walk them through how it works and tell them the actual price so you can take this out of their pocket money, for example. It’s also a good idea to take them to the ATM with you and explain that the money coming from the machine is reducing the amount the family has in savings. It’s never too late (or too early). Investing from an early age can help build substantial wealth over time. So share our budget planner and speak with your kids about planning for financial success. Integrating money into your children’s lives can be a positive experience— along the way they’ll benefit from your knowledge and may even want to celebrate their achievements.

Noosa Country – past present and future the call of the rural landscape THESE days we call it tree-change, in the past it was ‘escaping to the country’ and before that ‘going bush’. But there is one thing many of us have in common, sometime in the past, we or one of our forebears, made the trip to the Noosa hinterland and decided to stay. At the recent Noosa Museum ‘Past, Present, Future Heritage’ forum in Pomona it was clear that the call of the rural landscape has seen several waves of migrants to our Shire that have made a significant difference to our community’s future. Dr Bill Metcalfe told us how it was a ‘perfectionist’ ideology that led to the start of the Protestant Unity Community in the 1890s that led to the establishment of the railway siding that became the town of Pomona. Perfectionists believed that if you live in a ‘perfect’ environment then you are more likely to become a ‘perfect’ person. This hardy band of souls had been lured by a government program that offered financial incentives to get people off the Brisbane floodplains after the 1893 flood as long as they pooled their resources to create communities. Amongst them were the family that museum stalwart Irene Christie and her brother Mayor Noel Playford are descended from. Around this time my great grandparents (pictured), attracted by the deep red soils and frost free slopes, moved from the Gold Coast to just down the road in North Arm. They farmed bananas and ran the local bakery but were forced back to the big smoke during the First World War when the economy tightened. Landcare legend Phil Moran talked about the history of that group and how he had moved along with many of us ‘counter-culturalists’ in the late 1970s and 80s. In those days magazines such as ‘Grass Roots’ were opening up the prospect to successful foodies like Phil, and Pizza Hut managers such as myself, to escape the rat race. Attracted by the lure of an alternative lifestyle plant-

www.cooroyrag.com.au

ing trees and permaculture gardens, and living in owner-built houses set in Noosa’s idyllic landscapes. During this period the Cooroy census district (CD) was the fasting growing CD in Australia. Over the last decade we have seen a new band of entrepreneurial global citizens attracted by the richness of the hinterland’s topography, biodiversity and waterways to make their tree-change. People like Dick Barnes one of the driving forces behind Country Noosa Inc, treasurer of Noosa Landcare and president of the Noosa Community Biosphere Association. Dick gave up his life as an executive in a multi-national food conglomerate to become a mid-scale grazier and share farmer on properties throughout the Shire. The call of the rural landscape this time has brought people with skills to help transform our local economy. A number of them were active contributors to the development of the Local Economic Plan and advocated a future for Noosa’s hinterland driven by sustainable rural enterprises and as a base for small IT start-ups and the like. FOR those regular readers of the Cooroy Police Report you would be aware that the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Cooroy Police have been working closely together for the past 15 to 20 years with the common goal being to better protect the Cooroy business community against crime. This partnership consistently has Cooroy Crime stats at some of the lowest on the coast and clear up rates for unlawful entry offences the best throughout the coast and in past years double the District and State averages. In my last report I called for expressions of interest from business owners who are interested in installing CCTV systems in their premises with the idea being that the more businesses who get involved the better bargaining deal we would get from companies supplying and fitting these systems. We have received a number of emails from interested businesses and I have also spoken in person to business owners who are keen to get on board and eager to start taking a more proactive approach to better protecting their premises against criminals. I suppose a lot of business owners would have read my previous article and thought what a great idea especially being tax deductable and probably made the comment along the lines of getting involved and sending an e mail but straight after saying that the phone rang or a customer walked in the door and that thought quickly evaporated . With this in mind our Volunteer in Policing worker, Anne Winnings will

be pounding the pavement over the next month visiting businesses in person and talking with shop owners to gauge community interest and to personally obtain expressions of interest other than the ones already submitted to her e mail address of Winning.Anne@police.qld.gov.au We are hoping that we can progress this early in 2016, so please get your emails into Anne by 28 December. Domestic Violence continues to be a huge concern to the community and police alike with an average of one woman killed as a result of a Domestic Violence incident each week around Australia. That statistic is truly staggering but of course this is just the tip of the iceberg with many many more woman subjected to serious assaults and violent controlling behaviour from their current or ex partners. Cooroy has its fair share of this type of behaviour with a large proportion of police resources deployed to investigate and prevent domestic violence from occurring. As recently as last week we received a phone call from a concerned neighbour in regards screaming coming from a nearby property resulting in police responding within minutes to find a woman with serious facial injuries which could have been much worse except for the timely intervention of neighbours. Police were able to attend and quickly arrest the perpetrator who has been charged with serious Domestic Violence offences. I’d like to encourage members of the community to report all

instances of domestic violence as you may very well be saving someone’s life by doing so. No longer is it good enough to just say what happens behind closed doors is not my business. More often than not police attend and focus upon detaining a violent offender and once that threat is contained we stop and survey the damage only to see huddled in the corner a couple of distraught young children quivering in fear which is mind blowing in the extreme to think what mental scars that those children will carry for the rest of their lives. If you can’t or won’t get involved for the adults then maybe think about the kids you may be helping and protecting. Please call the DV Connect Line on 1800 811 811 for women and 1800 600 636 for men if you need advice or of course Triple 0 if the matter is urgent. You are also able to contact your local police station for advice. I would also like to say a sincere thank you on behalf of myself and the staff at the Cooroy Police Station for all of the incredible support that we continue to get from the Cooroy community. It is truly a pleasure to serve this community which was no more evident than the Cooroy Christmas parade where the well wishes extended to us was a humbling experience. A big thank you as well to the Cooroy SES who continue to amaze me with their commitment to this community. Without the SES the community would be a lesser place to be so thank you Stan, Carol and Pauline and all the other volunteers for the hard work throughout 2015.

FORMER councillor Ray Kelly has announced his candidacy for Mayor at the next Noosa Shire Council Elections 2016. Ray served on the Noosa council for 23 years. He had been married for 50 years to his former wife Dawn who passed away in June 2015. Ray has 3 children, all who are living and working in the Noosa Shire. He also has 3 grandchildren. Ray has a proven record for his community involvement in the Noosa Shire. He has been called The Quiet Achiever within the many organisations that he has started or been a founder member within our shire and is still involved with many of them. Ray believes the break from local government has been positive in that he can return to produce leadership with a new found energy, promising the same commitment to work hard and to his best ability for our community. Ray is totally against party politics in Local government, he fought hard with his own National party to keep Party politics out of local government. “Local government is for the people of our community not the party play makers,” said Ray.

He would like to re stablished the junior council, which he started back in 1989. “Young person’s feedback from their experience with junior council has proven positive in gaining employment,” says Ray. Ray always supported Innovative industries to our area and he stresses that we still need to do more to help these industries establish here. “To have planning schemes, that reflects the needs of our community for its economic benefits, protection of our environment and our community lifestyles. An urgent need now is the granny flat, apartment and caretaker’s buildings so people can stay at their property areas without the need to move into retirement homes etc,” says Ray. “Infrastructure needs such as Beckman’s road duplication. Cooroy, Noosa Junction, Pomona car parking needs. Flood free roads around the 6 mile creek, lobby state government to fund these as soon as possible. Also lobby for better high speed internet from the other levels of government. “I will have details of my history and more detailed policies very shortly on my Facebook and Twitter Site raykellyformayor@gmail.com.au.or phone 0418196216, 54477314.”

Painting with light MIA Hacker paints with light, combining an interest in painting, drawing and a love of photography. Light creates shadows, reflections and movements and the eye can be tricked into thinking objects are certain things when in fact they may be something completely different. In this exhibition, the artist takes a second look at the most common of objects and scenes around us every day, capturing those moments and reinterpreting them as abstract visual statements. Mia says her creativity passion was first stirred when she bought her first 35mm film camera at 10 years old. “I loved the whole process, especially when the envelope would arrive in the past with my packet of photos,” said

Mia Hacker - Photo by Peter Hilliard. Mia. Not long after this, Mia’s grandfather gave her his old SLR 35mm film camera and she hasn’t looked back. “I love taking photographs of texture of all kinds. I want the viewer to get a bit lost in the moment in trying to work out what it is they are looking at.” Mia’s solo Art exhibition “Painting with Light” will be on show at the Noosa Regional Gallery until January 31. Lyn McCrea (L), and Ian Smith (Above) NOOSA Regional Gallery has launched the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize. Established in memory of local arts supporter and gallery volunteer Lyn McCrea, the annual art prize promotes excellence in contemporary Australian drawing. “The Gallery is excited to be working with Mr John McCrea to honour discerning art collector Lyn, and her passion for drawing, as well as raise drawing’s profile as a standalone art form,” says Noosa Regional Gallery Director Nina Shadforth. The prize is open to all practising Australian contemporary artists and Noosa Regional Gallery is accepting entries in the

2016 art prize until midnight Sunday, 31 January 2016. The Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize will initially run for five years, offered annually, with a cash prize of $1000 in the first year, to increase by $250 each year after. Each winning piece will join the McCrea collection, with notable Australian artist Ian Smith appointed judge of the 2016 prize. Smith is a close personal friend of the McCrea family and a highly regarded contemporary artist. Smith has been an Archibald finalist eight times. His work has been curated in national and international exhibitions since 1969, and is represented in the collections of major art galleries and corporations

both nationally and internationally. Closer to home, Noosa Regional Gallery hosted Smith’s retrospective touring exhibition, On the Road, in 2013. Lyn was a valued Noosa Regional Gallery volunteer, a long-standing member of the Friends Noosa Regional Gallery, and a passionate supporter of local artists. John’s gesture in establishing the art prize under the auspice of Noosa Regional Gallery is a significant step towards showcasing contemporary drawing in Australia. Benjamin has worked with the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament and the Australian Defence Force Academy since graduating from NDSHS, and was recognised in 2012 with an Order of Australia Association Senior Student Citizenship Award. Benjamin’s partner, fellow 2012 NDSHS graduate Ella Luttrell, has supported Benjamin, whilst also pursuing a keen interest in travel and completing a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. “He is an amazing man. I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Ella said via Facebook. NDSHS wishes Benjamin a very happy and successful future.

STRESS is a fact of life and a causative factor for fat gain. ”This is so even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight—or even add ounces or kilos,” says Naturopath Maria. Here’s what happens Your body responds to all stress in exactly the same way. So you have a stressful day with the in-laws over the holiday period, next your brain instructs your cells to release potent hormones, which leads to adrenaline production. This adrenaline taps stored energy so you can fight or flee. Cortisol is also produced at this time telling your body to replenish that energy even though you haven’t used very many calories. At this stage you are feeling hungry...very hungry. As long as the stress continues your body keeps on pumping out that cortisol. Cortisol also encourages your body to store fat,

particularly visceral fat, which is particularly dangerous because it surrounds vital organs and releases fatty acids into your blood, raising cholesterol and insulin levels and paving the way for heart disease and diabetes. By taking 1 step you can get your cortisol levels and your weight under control—and improve your and lose up to 3 kilograms in just 3 weeks by learning how to reset your hormones! Keep your body merry this festive season WELL Christmas is nearly here, yet again. As physio’s, we often seen a great deal of people who either injure themselves over the festive season, or who find that their aches and pains increase over this period. So, why is that you ask? Well there are probably a number of reasons. Firstly, we all tend to take a break from our regular exercise routines, and over indulge in some Christmas cheer. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining muscle strength, co-ordination and joint mobility. It takes a long time to improve muscle strength, but only a short period of rest to undo all of that good work. Without regular exercise, the receptors in our joints that send feedback to the brain don’t function as well as they should. This can increase the likelihood of an injury while sending some fast ones down the pitch in backyard cricket, or while hurtling down the ‘slip and slide’. Alcohol is another major contributor to festive season injuries. Most people are aware of the balance effects of alcohol, so it is easy to see how it leads to increased falls and ligament damage. Ladies tottering around on high heels at Christmas parties are at a significantly higher risk of hurting an ankle or knee, especially if consuming alcohol. So ladies, no dancing in soaring high heels after a few champers’ at the Christmas party! At least take off the heels! Overnight visits to relatives houses often involve sleeping in a strange bed, on a strange mattress and pillow. This can result in a wry neck upon waking, which is certainly not what you want during the Christmas break. Remember to take you own pillow when possible, and stretch your neck and back regularly to

avoid muscle tightness. So there you have it! Keep active, limit the alcohol (especially while wearing those killer heels) and stretch regularly to avoid a painful Christmas break. If you do happen to injure yourself this holiday period, seek help straight away. The sooner your injuries are attended to, the quicker you will be back to the holiday fun. Pomona State School students provide emergency shelter

HARDWARE

ON Friday 27 November students at the Pomona State School showed their citizenship and leadership qualities by taking responsibilities for real life problems within their school and the global community when Josh Butler, President of the school EarlyAct Club presented a cheque for $230 to Carol Johnson of the Rotary Club of Cooroy for Shelterbox. Shelterbox is an international disaster relief agency that seeks to provide shelter, warmth and dignity to families that have lost their homes to disasters. It provides shelter with a family sized tent made to withstand high winds and heavy rainfall, thermal blankets for sleeping, water purification equipment, a stove with full set of cooking and

eating utensils, a basic tool kit, solar lights and children’s activity pack - in fact everything required to provide for a family devastated by the total loss of their home. EarlyAct, sponsored by Rotary, is a service club for students from ages 5 to 13. It provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others. Carol Johnston, Youth Director, Rotary Club of Cooroy said earthquakes and tsunamis happen, often with no warning, and com-

THERE were paws a plenty on Saturday 28th November at the Pomona Markets. Jjenisis, our local all Natural, Vegan and Cruelty Free Skincare business took their beliefs one step further and held a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. Pet owners came along and had a photo with their pooch and Santa, with all profits going directly to SCAR. With the assistance of local photographer Robert Munden, there were some beautiful moments captured. By hosting this event not only did Jjenisis want to support the amazing services of SCAR but also highlight to people that they can make a conscious decision to only buy products that are not tested on animals. A big thank you to Pomona Markets for all your assistance and not forgetting Stephen Hilditch for volunteering his time and being an amazing Santa. Learning is exciting

Madison Wenban and Laken Barden join Geoff Edwards, Alyson Covey and Jacque Wright in front of the Pomona State School sign FUNDING from the Pomona Agency of Bendigo Bank in the latter part of this year has helped support the school’s Breakfast Club program. The school Chappy, Paulette Gee works with a team of volunteers every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning, putting the most important meal of the day in the tummies of 6070 students each day. On top of that sponsorship came the opportunity for the bank to sponsor a special teaching program designed to help improve children’s reading and writing skills in the lower years of primary school, known as MiniLit. Pomona State School Principal, Alyson Covey, said the cross section of sponsorship was fantastic for the students and got the relationship with the Pomona Agency to a great start. “Our local Bendigo Bank manager, Geoff Edwards got it touch with us not long after the Pomona Agency opened in April this year and we’re very grateful he did,” Alyson shared. “MiniLit stands for ‘Meeting Initial Needs In Literacy’ and is an early literacy intervention program. It’s designed to be delivered daily, for one hour, to small groups of up to four Year 1 students who have struggled to make adequate progress in learning to read during their first year of schooling. It builds on each student’s progress and, in turn builds confidence and

self-belief in each students’ own literacy learning ability,” she said. The program is based on the findings of scientific research, carried out over the past 40 years, into how reading works and how it may best be taught. It is also in accord with the recommendations of national reports into effective reading instruction that have emphasised the five key pillars of reading instruction (sometimes known as the ‘five big ideas’), namely: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Geoff Edwards said the visit to Pomona State School was a great opportunity to see the great work that’s being carried out though the sponsorships so soon after the Pomona Agency opening. “We’re loving the relationship we’re developing with Pomona State School and will be keen to work with Alyson and Jacque to find ways to complement what their needs are from a Community Bank perspective. We’re here because the people of Pomona wanted their own bank and this is one way our profits can benefit the students of the area,” Geoff said. “The Year One students were telling me they love the MiniLit program and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, motivate them to keep exploring and learning. It’s a great program for the kids and we’re delighted to be able to fund some support for it,” Geoff added.

FORMER Noosa District State High School SOSE teacher Kate Miles set up a Nepalese trekking company with husband Rahul, which enables tourists from around the world to have an unique experience in the Himalayas where they give back to the local community through volunteer work at Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School. Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School was destroyed by this year’s earthquake, and through generous donations from organisations, private individuals and a free dress day held at Noosa District State High School, the school is now up and running. A Great Barrier Reef mural was painted on the outside of one classroom to thank all the contributions (both on the ground and through financial support) made by Australians. Some classrooms are yet to be completed and the replacement of resources and other school equipment is still required. Noosa District State High School teacher Bridge Muir will be joining a number of other volunteers to assist with the final building work at the primary school as well as sharing knowledge, resources and pedagogical strategies

and ideas with the staff and students at Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School over the Easter school holidays in 2016. The 13 day volunteer trek will also take in the most breathtaking views and jaw-dropping sunrises and sunsets of the Himalayas whilst trekking via Pikey View Point (4060m). The trek commences on March 25, 2016 and concludes on April 6, 2016, with the basic package costing a total of US $1,100. Volunteers are needed to join the team, and those interested can email Ms Miles and her Down 2 Earth Adventure trekking company for more information: down2earthadventure@gmail.com or visit their website at: www.down2earthadventure.com Donations to the school rebuild project can be made through Down 2 Earth Adventure’s Chuffed fundraising page: https://chuffed.org/project/shree-panch-pokhari-rebuild-3 Ms Miles will be visiting family on the Sunshine Coast over the Christmas holidays, and on her return to Nepal in January, she can take back with her donated school resources and supplies, toys and warm clothing (as she has been granted a 30kg check-in baggage allowance). NDSHS teacher Miss Muir will also be able to take over extra items with her during the Easter school holidays. Advantages to selling your house over Christmas DON’T fret if you’re trying to sell your home as the tinsel’s going up. There are some little known advantages to selling through Christmas and New Year. There are challenges to selling your property through Christmas and the new year. Many agents close up shop and have a break, people get distracted with presents and parties, and let’s face it… most of us are just plain exhausted. But if you find yourself selling over the holidays, don’t despair. In some ways, it can be a good thing. You just need to know where your advantages lie. The Spring selling season is winding down, and many who’ve parted with their home are now on the hunt for their next property. If the season was competitive they’ll be a good number of people who missed out on their dream home and need to close the deal before the end of the year. Though it’s a busy time of year, most people have more time up their sleeve to scout properties they’ve had an eye on. Normal work schedules make viewing lots of properties a challenge. As workload and commitments slow down, motivated buyers have much more time to

search through properties that appeal and get out to see them. Selling at the height of Spring or Autumn means you’ll need to work hard to stand out from a crowd. There are usually less properties on the market over Christmas and New Year, meaning motivated buyers will have fewer prospects to tempt them. By January and February, property listings are surging once more, and demand for your place may dip. Milk the fact you’re one of a special few. Depending on where you live and how you decorate, a home can have a unique appeal during the Christmas season. If your target market is families, you can tastefully dress your property so it lives and breathes the perfect family Christmas. Buyers can get more emotional over the holidays, so appealing to the heart strings isn’t as taboo as usual. Embrace the season and you’ll connect with others who love it. The rental market gets noisy this time of year. Leases are up, and people are working out their next step – new place to rent, or, for many, time to finally buy. Catch them while they’re in transit.

Keeping in Touch

WITH the mercury rising the only thing to match the searing temperature was the hot action on the playing fields in the junior touch footy grand final day last Saturday. In really tough conditions our juniors put in an incredible effort to end our season on a high with awesome games all afternoon. Family, friends and supporters were on hand to witness some great touch being played in good spirit and with great sportsmanship. First up for the afternoon our U10’s got the ball rolling with some thrilling games. As the final siren sounded the two U10 boys games were all locked up with drawn score cards of 5 all on both fields. In what was probably a first for these young stars

the ‘drop off’ came into play to determine the results. With both games getting down to three players against three players all the teams deserved to be worthy winners. With exhaustion from the heat and the added playing minutes Amigos were triumphant against GSLC and Cooroy scored the winning touchdown against Dancers. In the U10 girls division Sunshine Beach Girls and Purple Strikers were involved a tight tussle with both teams displaying unbreakable defence with only a couple of touchdowns the difference in favour of the Sunshine Girls. Fire Girls and GSLC also played an entertaining match with Fire Girls taking out the game. In the final U10 match Pink Thunder were too strong for GSLC (boys) with both teams crossing the try line for some great touchdowns. In the Under 12 division Ryanos dug deep and pushed Flaming Piggies for the entire game but the Flaming Piggies took every opportunity to finish off an impressive season on top. In a battle that went down to the wire and was filled with end to end action Banana Splits just held on over Warriors. There was a three way decider between Tewantin, Sunshine Rippers and The Sun Setters. Season frontrunners SBSHS produced yet another polished performance against GSLC. Even with a never give up attitude from the GSLC girls, a disciplined whole game effort from the SBSHS team saw them take the U14/16 girls ‘A’ Grade title. Other results in this division saw an under strength Wimmers side still manage to hold out the determined St Brazza’s and in a battle of

Fast4Tennis - fast, fun, friendly FAST4TENNIS is a TEAM based competition initiated by Tennis Australia. Local boys Alex Lloyd and Jasper Patton finished on top of the points ladder with 105 points, with all girl team of Tiani Claridge and Hayley Favelle were the second highest point scorers with 96 points overall. The highly anticipated Grand Final and minor placing’s were held on Friday 27 November, the tennis was spectacular to watch on all four courts. The Grand Final be-

NDSHS, the younger 7/8’s with the aid of extra subs came home stronger against the 15’s. There were three close encounters in the U14/ 16 boys division to conclude the afternoon. GSLC came in a close second against a committed NDSHS 7/8’s. After a slow start NDSHS 15’s got themselves back into the match against Dodgers but the Dodgers boys made a late charge to take the game. Match of the day belonged to Baz and GSLC (2) to take the U14/16 ‘A’ division. This sensational match saw the lead change several times and as the as the referee’s whistle blew full time the score was level at 5 touchdowns a piece. As the crowd from other games filtered over to their field the game went into a drop off to decide the result. Taking the lead from the U10 boys earlier drop offs this match also progressed to just three players on each side. With a winner needing to be named the game continued until the winning touchdown was scored by GSLC, a mammoth effort by both teams. Season award winners were also announced on our Grand Final day. Player of the Season award recipients were Bronte Langbridge, Ben Anderson, Ruby McIlroy, Harley Flynn, Pip Dwyer and Chaance Wells. As well as acknowledging the efforts of our players, the Junior Referees’ Encouragement Award went to Curtis Dean and Junior Referee of the Season was awarded to Pip Dwyer. This season a junior MVP was also announced, congratulations to Tom Kennedy for representing our club both as a player and referee and his commitment to touch every week. Until the next touchdown...

tween the top two teams was very exciting, all 4 players were focused and going for their shots, every point played was a battle fought with power, consistency and ball placement. Tiani and Hayley defeated Jasper and Alex by 5 games. With the presentation ending the evening, finalists, runners up and worthy place getters were awarded with lovely trophy’s and medallion’s from Coach Di and the Cooroy Tennis Club. Coach Di and trainee assistant coach Alex were very impressed with the kids’ determination, sportsmanship and great effort through out the series. Text Di on 0478 127 619 for enquiries.

Impact Boxing presentations THE Impact Boxing Academy family celebrated their end of year Xmas party and Presentation day in true Impact fashion with over 70 people, including members, families & guests poolside at the Evans ranch. This year’s celebration was also a milestone for the club as it celebrated its 10th year of operation in Cooroy. In the 10 years that Impact Boxing has been in operation the club has had 490 bouts! Out of that 490 bouts the club has had 340 Wins and 150 losses! Out of those 340 wins the club has won, 9 Australian titles, 10 Qld titles, 9 S.E.Qld Titles, 9 Qld Novice Titles, 16 National Golden Gloves Titles, 6 Wide Bay Titles and a WBF World Title! The club has had a total of 54 fighters climb through those ropes in 10 years. This year Impact Boxing also had the clubs first Australian Boxing team representative and captain represent his country in Sam Cameron-Hands. Sam represented Australia in Russia and then 3 weeks later he represented Qld in Germany where he defeated the European

champion and the German National champion. But it’s not only the fighters that have been reaching milestones, Head coach Mark Evans has also been busy gathering coaching accreditations. Mark has now been a state coach for Boxing Qld for the last 4 years. He has been appointed by Boxing Australia as the Qld development coach for the last two years and 2016 will see him elevated through the Boxing Australia coaching ranks to the Queensland Talent I.D. coach. Mark has also travelled overseas to up skill his coaching accreditation and is now an AIBA (world governing body for amateur boxing) Star 2 coach. Mark has also been appointed as the head coach from Boxing Australia to take an Australian Youth team back to Russia in March 2016. “It makes me so proud that a little backyard gym that i started 10 years ago in Cooroy is now competing on the world stage and in doing so has helped put Cooroy on the boxing map. These kids have done us all extremely proud and most of them, like Sam Cameron-Hands, are all now knocking on the rep-

resentative door for International competition next year,” said Mark. “2016 I believe will be our club’s biggest year to date. We have 16 fighters ready to go and a few debutants chewing at the bit waiting for their turn to shine. A club is only as good as the people in it and

around it, so I would like to thank all my fighters, both present and past, a big shout out to all the parents that give up so much of their time to help these kids reach their goals, a massive thank you to my own family, especially my beautiful wife Mel, for all the sacrifices that they also make for

me and the club. Thank you to the Cooroy community and especially the Cooroy Rag for your continued support. I look forward to the next 10 Years,” said Mark. “From all of us at Impact Boxing we wish you all a Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year!”
