NOOSA District State High School 2014 graduates proudly crossed the stage dressed in their finest to accept their senior certificate of completion from school Principal Chris Roff and Senior School Deputy Principal Stacey Daveson. The graduates received their certificates of completion to loud applause from their parents, siblings, friends and teachers, and reflected on their time at Noosa District State High School as they listened to memorable and wise words spoken by School Captains’ Nadia Dunning and James Langton and School Principal Chris Roff. Principal Chris Roff urged the Year 12 students to make the most of their short time on earth, and suggested to the students that they leave positive

and lasting legacies. Student Council Leader Penny Fisher thanked parents, teachers and the school community for their support, encouragement, care, understanding and for all the assistance provided to the graduates throughout the trials and tribulations faced on their journey from Year 8 to Year 12. Some students arrived to the graduation in style and in the Gatsby theme with limousines and vintage cars delivering the students to the school’s front gates, whilst one student opted to be different by arriving to the school on his ride-on Eksy. The graduates were transported by bus to their formal dinner held at the RACV Noosa. See more photos on pages 18 & 19

The G20 Show is over and all the players have left the scene, It was by far the biggest event, Brisbane has ever seen. Loads of pomp and circumstance, lots of talk financial, And lots of razzle-dazzle, with promises substantial. The big shots were there in strength, watching each other like hawks, Fine-combing each other’s speeches, their out-of-session talks. Will it result in anything useful, when the showtime speeches have ended. Or will it have been just a talkfest, not what was supposedly intended. Brisbane of course was all prettied up, all so smart and beautiful, The citizens behaved as requested, all obedient and dutiful. However security measures caused inconvenience and frustration, In fact this was a major factor in justified business vexation. The security police did everything that seemed to be required, They are to be congratulated, their performance justifiably admired. Mr Abbott and Mr Putin, reportedly had their anticipated date, But it seems the threatened shirtfront, did not eventuate. Mr Putin brought his Navy with him, which was fair enough, Perhaps in case the shirtfronting looked like getting rough. But overall it went very well, the delegates looked quite happy, Even Mr Obama seemed to enjoy himself, and went home a happy chappy. But I think the delegate who assured the greatest importance, Was the cuddly koala at the end, who gave the stellar performance. No doubt the organisers were successful and all worked very hard, And the cost of about 400 million will end up on Australia’s credit card!!

WITH the storm season upon us, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that during a storm people should: Move your car under cover or away from trees; Secure loose outdoor items; Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters; Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees; Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm; Beware of fallen trees and power lines. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

WHILE exciting for some, fireworks, thunder and lightning can be very frightening for our furry friends. If you have a pet that is fearful of loud noises consider making them a safe place, upstairs with you or a safe dark space outside. In their panic, pets can often somehow manage to escape properties you think impenetrable. If they experience true distress, consider consulting your vet for options to help keep them calm. The storm season always reinforces the importance of having your animal registered and microchipped, as registered and microchipped dogs and cats can quickly be reunited with their owners if they stray.

This year is going to be bigger and better to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this fantastic free community event! Attracting over 6,000 people, this event has the biggest program of FREE activities on offer, not to mention some really fun events that you just don’t see anywhere else! “Christmas in Cooroy is unique because everything is free including rides, face painting, photo booth, a host of children’s activities and of course the popular visit by Santa. But it is the wealth of unique entertainment and the terrific community atmosphere that really gets people excited. Plus this year to celebrate our 10th anniversary we’ve added so much more to the program that it is sure to be simply amazing,” explained event manager Danielle Taylor. A new addition to the program this year is the Santa Sack Race sponsored by Cooroy Fish & Chips. Next on the program is the Great Santa Race which is truly amazing spectacle with a crowd of Santa suit clad runners doing a roughly 300 metre sprint up the main

street? There is a prize pool of $2,400 sponsored by Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group and the $10 entry gets you Santa suit to run in and the proceeds go to the Leukaemia Foundation. The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is the big drawcard with around 30 floats decorated in all sorts of imaginative ways. This year the theme is “Wild West” and there are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds and people of all ages are

just amazed at how great the floats look. Other highlights include the Poets Breakfast at the Cooroy Hotel, the East versus West Tug of War, the Teepee of Smiles Photo Booth sponsored by CJ Taxation Services, some great entertainment sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA including local band Smokin Mirrors, the Hinterland Christian Centre Choir, Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters and a fantastic fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy RSL. THE elves have worked extra hard this year to decorate Cooroy and they’ve apparently even planned a surprise with the weather too! Those in the know are forecasting snow in Cooroy on Friday 5 December when the Ricon Christmas tree is officially turned on at 7pm. One thing is for sure, there will be many smiles from all ages as it is a

great evening out for the whole family. Each year the beautiful Cooroy tree becomes more spectacular and there is little debate about which tree is the best on the Sunshine Coast. Cooroy is one of the few towns that fund and install their own decorations thanks to the dedication of a host of volunteer elves and some very generous

kids with drug and health education with the wider program empowering one million young Australians each year to make safe choices. Life Education was established 30 years ago to teach children ways to keep their bodies healthy and to equip them with the skills to make appropriate choices and a way of learning to stay secure in potentially unsafe situations. on student fees and local community funding to meet costs. That’s where our local Bendigo Bank branches have stepped in to subsidize the program. In fact, apart from funding the Life Education program for the past eight years, locals voted at a Community Forum held by Bendigo Bank in 2011 to make funding the new van a priority. So the plan has been in place since then, making this outcome all the more positive for our community. In 2014, Life Ed Coordinator, Niki Andrinopoulos, has trav-

elled to 25 schools from Gympie to Yandina and nearly 9,000 children accessed the program. On a local level, Cooloola-Noosa Life Education Association Inc. was formed in 1995 and from humble beginnings with very little backing the program is now seen as an essential component of every child’s education. Cooroy State School principal, Des Deighton said his school always looks forward to their visit from the Life Ed Van and believes the program is an essential component of every child’s education.

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BRICKBAT to all those people who drive at 80kph or under between Cooroy and Timbeerwah turnoff. I respect that you may not want to drive at the legal limit of 100kph but bear a thought for people who do want to drive at the limit – look in your rear vision mirror and see the cars lining up behind you! There are plenty of spots to go off the main road and pause for a minute or two to wait for the dozens of cars built up behind you to go past. BOUQUET: “TJ and myself would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support for the last six years we owned Cooroy Seafood Market. The community was incredibly awesome and had become like a family to us. We wish you all well; and once again, thank you very much for your support. Take care. TJ and Reny “ BRICKBAT: Three times in 4 weeks, I have had a nasty surprise when I returned to my car after shopping – a ‘ding’ in my car. The last one (12/11) was the worst. After the first one I parked further away – and further away. No note was left of course. After many years and many cars, I finally have a very nice car. I wash it, I polish it, I look after it to protect my investment as much as I can. After 30 odd years of parking regularly in Cooroy I have not seen such impatience, rudeness, inconsideration for others and downright lack of respect for self and for others. What is Cooroy turning to? Very sad. PS. Surely someone must see something. BRICKBAT to the person/persons unknown who deemed it necessary to pick up our little Staff/Foxy and take her to the RSPCA and allegedly claim she has been chasing wallabies. Even if she did chase a wallaby (of which we have visiting our property) at the ripe old age of 12 years (84 human years) not in a bue fit would she ever catch one. This is distressing as Sarah is a much loved family pet. She has a collar with a council tag, another tag with her name, home phone number, a mobile phone number and it also says microchipped. To the nameless, faceless person who could not even contact us directly to talk about their complaint via all these avenues, but drive all the way to the RSPCA to somehow get rid of her, shame on you! We are supporters of all animal welfare! BOUQUET to Monique at the Cooroy Sports Hub for the marvellous job she did with the teacher aides Christmas party.

MUSIC on Mondays is a new program designed to give emerging local artists all-important exposure. It’s the brainchild of Cooroy Library, which plans to host the twicemonthly music events from early next year. The hunt is now on for local artists keen to showcase their talents. “We want to hear from musicians who are keen to perform their songs as part of this new program,” said Council Library Officer Jen Caddie. “This is a chance for emerging artists to perform within their own local community and promote their work .” As well as share their

New Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Ltd founding directors NOOSA Council is calling for expressions of interests for eight founding directors to steer the new Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Ltd. “The establishment of the new management model puts the community squarely in the driver’s seat,” said Noosa Mayor Noel Playford. In the future, new directors can be elected by the foundation except for one director position that will be filled by Council. Expressions of interest are being sought from people with skills across key areas such as high-level leadership, business management, economics, science, sustainability and communications. The new structure includes a charitable trust which will be able to attract funding from grants and donations, something that was not possible under the former Noosa Biosphere management model. Council will contribute funding but will have no control over how the new structure allocates its funds. While the director positions are unpaid, the founding directors will play an important role in shaping Noosa’s future as they work towards enhancing its environmental, social, and economic sustainability. For expressions of interest and for more information please call Debra Iezzi: T: 5329 6348 or E: debra.iezzi@noosa.qld. gov.au

COOROY RAG Anzac Equestrian History Project LOCAL film maker James Muller will be filming interviews for the Anzac Equestrian History Project at the Cooroy RSL Community Hall Saturday 13th December 2014 and we encourage all who have stories, photos and memorabilia to get in touch (Call Charles: 0417 792 944) and come along on the 13th Dec. The project is part of the Noosa Institute for Socio-Economic & Environmental Research (NISER) ‘Greater Sunshine Coast Anzac Equestrian History Project. NISER successfully secured Queensland and Federal government funding of $30,000 to undertake the project culminating with a launch and screening at Cooroy RSL for Anzac Day celebrations 2015. The project is centred on recounting and recording on film the local Sunshine Coast ANZAC Equestrian History based on those who served in WW1. It will outline the strong contribution of manpower and horses made by the Light Horsemen who enlisted from the Greater Sunshine Coast region. Many of the light horseman and their horses came from the region especially the hinterland areas and we are researching, interviewing and filming local people with a connection including descendants.. In addition, the equestrian history is being recounted via additional filmed interviews and footage of local equestrian and re-enactment troops Gympie & Maleny as well as from local remembrance events. We believe that the Anzac Equestrian history is a substantially untold story and we intend to tell the story and to presence the great Anzac spirit and their influence which is alive today. A commemorative DVD will also enhance local historical education, community understanding and celebrations to mark the Centenary of ANZAC. If you have a connection or material relating to the Light Horse Anzac’s please call Charles 0417 792 944.

Last minute financial tips for Christmas Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WELL, Christmas in Cooroy is about to be held and it’s a special time of year in town. Where has the year gone? It seems that every year goes by quicker than the last. As everyone prepares for that magical day of the year, it’s a good idea to keep a close watch on your finances. If you’re anything like me, you tend to leave your purchases a little late and put everything on the credit card. That’s fine, as long as remember to attend to it before the Boxing Day sales really get you to a point of no return... Here are some suggestions to keep things on track over the festive season; • Plan the purchase of your Christmas gifts to suit your budget. Write down everyone that you need to buy for and keep your eye out for specials in catalogues sent by many of the larger shops. Do your best to spot a bargain this week and take advantage of the post Christmas sales in

preparation for next year. • Budget for Christmas by saving in a Christmas Club account. As little as $20 per week will mount up to over $1,000 in a year’s time. Where you can, avoid using the credit card and use this savings instead. • Make the most of our wonderful local markets with home made goodies that can be given as gifts or even better, make your own gifts. It’s amazing what you can find and put together to make a wonderful homemade hamper, and (as we all know) nothing is more special than a handmade personalised gift. • If you have a large family to buy for, consider a secret Santa gift, where only one gift is purchased but everyone in the family still gets a present. • Don’t go overboard in the food department; plan your menus appropriately to suit your budget. Most of us overindulge at Christmas time way too much. · While it may sound funny, don’t forget to look at increasing your contents insurance

if you have lashed out on some bigger items for Christmas and if you’re lucky enough to be doing any kind of international or domestic travel, don’t forget about your travel insurance. Hopefully these ideas will make things a little easier over this Christmas season and give you something to think about and work towards for the next. Merry Christmas, enjoy your time with family and friends, stay safe and drive carefully. I hope you have a great start to 2015. Remember, if you’d like to discuss your finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

news Local volunteers receive community service award

COOROY RAG LONG-TIME friends and next door neighbours, Joyce Cunningham and the late Una Bryant, were recently acknowledged for their outstanding volunteer contribution to the Cooroy community by being awarded 2014 Moderator’s Community Service Medals. Recipients were presented their medals by the Uniting Church Moderator David Baker and the UnitingCare Queensland Chief Executive Officer Anne Cross at the 31st Synod meeting. UnitingCare Queensland Director of Mission, Colleen Geyer, said that volunteers were usually people who simply saw a need and were driven to respond. “Our medal recipients are amazing,” she said. “They have quite often volunteered for many years and are the kind of people who just get in there and help wherever they can,” Colleen said. For 50 years, Una volunteered in the community and Joyce over the last 30 years. Joyce and Una, along with their husbands, made a particularly outstanding

contribution to the development of Kabara, a locally funded 40-bed aged care facility for people who could no longer live independently in their homes. Following construction, Joyce and Una continued to volunteer their time fundraising and regularly visiting people at the facility, now managed under Noosa Care Incorporated. Described as having “determined commitment and boundless energy”, Joyce is still volunteering today. Una volunteered her time for many other organisations in Cooroy, including the Memorial Hall Catering Committee, the Country Women’s Association, the Noosa District High School Auxiliary, Care and Share, Meals on Wheels, the Endeavour Foundation, the Red Cross Blood Bank, the Salvation Army and particularly the Noosa and Cooroy Rotary. Joyce has supported the Endeavour Foundation op-shop in Cooroy, knitted ‘Trauma Teddies’ for the Nambour Fire Services and is also a Foundation Member

A total of 39 nominations were received from across the state and Joyce and Una were two of the 12 selected to receive the award. Una’s medal was accepted by her sister-in-law Melva Bryant. Many Moderator’s Medal recipients volunteer with UnitingCare Queensland service groups UnitingCare Community

(including Lifeline), UnitingCare Health hospitals and Blue Care which together support more than 14 000 people every day of the year. “We have more than 9 000 committed and caring volunteers who work across UnitingCare Queensland. There are also many more who volunteer through their local Uniting Church giving care and support to refugees, prisoners

and other people doing it tough in their community,” Colleen said. “The Moderator ’s medal is an excellent way to recognise the huge contribution that our volunteers make to the Queensland community. It is also a demonstration of the importance that the Uniting Church places on being active in the community and reaching out to people in need,” she said.

Minister’s Cup awarded to Carol Watkins, SES

FOR the second year in a row, the SES State Member of the Year Minister’s Cup has come to

Noosa. This year, the Award has gone to Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Noosa SES.

Last year, the Minister’s Cup was awarded to Stan Ryan, Local Controller, Noosa SES. Both Stan and Carol are active members of the Cooroy SES Group. Carol said she is very honoured to have been nominated, and selected for this Award. She will have been with the SES for 9 years in January. “With 6000 SES volunteers state wide, it is certainly not something I expected. But being able to contribute to the community, and being recognised is very humbling”, she said.

Not long after joining the SES, Carol found that life in the Noosa Unit was very busy and rewarding. “It is a very active Unit where we all train and activate together so we get to know each other well and recognise the strengths of all members. Stan and I have been working together to make this Unit a strong and professional one and I would hope this Award in part reflects the success of these efforts”. The Noosa Unit is very pro-active and focusses

on supporting its members. ‘Last year, we purchased a dual hopper automated sandbag filling machine, and recently we have purchased a 45Kva generator set up on a trailer, so it can be moved from location to location. Carol would like to pay tribute to all her fellow volunteer colleagues in the SES, who contribute so much to the safety and resilience of the community. As many people say ‘Where would Australia be without volunteers in all walks of life?”

Free Breast cancer screening returns to Cooroy WOMEN in the Cooroy area are being urged to take advantage of free breast cancer screening at Queensland Health’s mobile service which will be located the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, 50 Maple Street, Cooroy until 17 December 2014. BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Deb Zammit said breast cancer is still one of the most common cancers experienced by Australian women with about 1 in 8 Queensland women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85. “As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease is to detect breast cancer as early as possible,” Ms Zammit said Regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a

women or her doctor can feel anything. “Although the lead up to Christmas is a busy time, it is vital that all women heed messages about the importance of having a regular breast screen,” Ms Zammit said. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 5074 years are particularly encouraged to attend. There is no need for women to put off having a breastscreen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient, free and a doctor’s referral is not required. Cooroy SS Prep numbers on the rise EARLY indications are that there will be plenty of excited Prep students at Cooroy State School in 2015 with already an enrolment increase for next year of almost 25% compared to this year’s enrolment numbers. Cooroy State School has been successfully educating the students of Cooroy since 1909 and has forged a very strong partnership with Noosa District SHS to

ensure a smooth transition between primary and high school. Principal Des Deighton said the increase in Prep enrolments for next year is an indication that local people have become very aware of what a fantastic local school they have where strong academic standards are underpinned by a caring, happy school commu-

nity where children are given a wealth of opportunities. “ 2015 is shaping as a particularly great year as we have our first Canberra trip for year 6, every Prep child will have their own XO laptop at no cost to parents and we have been given a Numeracy coach to work with staff on further extending the great work being done in Maths, “ said Mr

Deighton. “We are forever getting compliments

about the positive and happy tone of our school; our students, their great behaviour and the respect they show.” Mr Deighton also paid tribute to the Grounds Staff Steve Harland and Bill Magin as the condition of the school and grounds ensures a wonderful physical learning environment. Mr Deighton said that although Prep numbers were on the rise, there was still plenty of room for new enrolments. “If you want your child to have access to their own XO laptop as another tool to enhance their learning, we are the school that can provide it.”

ON the 15th October our grandchildren’s 9 month old Beagle, Charlie, went missing from the Rafter Estate between Cash Road and Sunrise Road in Eumundi and has not yet been found. The family have gridsearched the bush

where he went missing, and systematically canvassed their local neighbourhood, and also the Yandina Bli Bli Road and Dunethin Rock area where there was a sighting of a dog fitting Charlie’s description at 7.30am on the 25th October. Posters

with photos and contact numbers have been put up everywhere the family can think of where dog lovers might go, in hope that someone might have seen him. Ads with photos were placed in local papers. Overwhelmingly the response from people has been nothing but kindness and compassion for the family’s sense of loss, and the lack of closure in not knowing his fate. Charlie is a beautiful little dog, with a lovely disposition, and quickly became like the “fifth child” in the family. We are all unbearably sad at the loss of his little presence in our lives.

Where is he? Did he come to grief in the bush and despite our searching, his body not been found? He is a smart fit little dog. We don’t think this has happened. Has he been picked up and taken miles away? Has another family adopted him? He is obviously a cared for dog, why would anybody who might have found him not try to find his owners? Is he with another family, and if so, is he being looked after? We are mindful that Charlie is a dog and not a child, and our hearts go out to all those who live with unsolved mysteries as to the whereabouts of lost loved ones. If this

horrible sense of loss and grieving is the way it feels to not know the fate of a little dog, what must it be like to lose a child or have a son missing in wartime, or to have an unresolved disappearance of any loved person? THE J at Noosa Junction will be transformed into a wonderland filled with joyful Christmas scenes and festive fun for two nights in December when Noosa Chorale presents its Christmas Cheer and Wassail. The Wassail has been a calendar event each year since it started in 2007 and is so popular performances post “house full” signs. The original idea came from one of music director Adrian King’s U.K. groups, the Grimsby Bach Choir, which each year stages a Wassail derived from the Old Norse ves hael or from a later time the Anglo Saxon waes hael. Depending on how you feel at the time it can be a toast of a drink like mulled ale or a party, particularly at Christmas. It’s easy to imagine roistering Vikings hallooing Wassail as they dip they beards into their tankards or 12th Century English peasants warming up to the winter weather with a Christmas carol or

dining & entertainment Chorale’s Xmas Joy at The J two and a hot mug. This Christmas the Wassail theme is “Joy” and, according to Chorale vice president and organiser, Talluah Harper, “It’s the joy of the holidays, joy in music, joy in food and joy in others. “It is table seating and we’re inviting folk to join us in sharing cheese platters, mince pies, drinks and hear some wonderful festive songs, sing carols from word sheets with the choir and enjoy a genial atmosphere of bonhomie and hearty Christmas Cheer!” The Chorale will showcase famous English composer Vaughan Williams and his “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” which has been described as “a piece which is awash with a luxurious, velvety smooth sound and absolutely divine.” Guest soloist in “Fantasia” is internationally renowned cellist Louise King who, as a concert and recording artist, has worked extensively

Noosa Chorale sopranos Talluah Harper and Debbie Boyles with music director Adrian King in Viking moods for Chorale’s Wassail. throughout the UK, Asia, Europe and now Australia with some of the world’s finest orchestras. Louise combines her concert work with teaching and Wassail partygoers will get an exclusive preview of the young students’

musical talents on arrival at The J for the Chorale concerts. Louise has organised around 12 of her cellists to play Christmas carols on the forecourt—a sort of cello hello! Noosa Chorale Christmas Cheer. The J

news

COOROY RAG JACK Spicer Oval in Kandanga sprang into life on Saturday as thousands turned out to celebrate the MARY River Festival. Great weather meant that the anticipated crowds turned into reality as communities along the Mary celebrated, a couple of days in advance of the fifth anniversary of the federal government decision that quashed the illconceived Traveston Dam. Festival Coordinator Joolie Gibbs said she was delighted with the turnout for this year’s festival. “It’s a lot more than just the numbers of people who came along, “ she said. “It’s the great spirit of celebration and community they brought with them. The Mary river festival has earned the reputation for its friendliness, great music and diverse artistic creativity and Saturday’s festival, and the feedback we’ve had from it, only continued and deepened that reputation.” “This is a grassroots festival all run on the wonderful energy of volunteers with the muchappreciated support of sponsors. We wanted to celebrate a lot more than just the decision than canned the dam, we wanted to celebrate the diversity in our community, both human a and ecological.” “Our music did this, with performers from as far afield as Kenya, Ireland and the USA but it’s the depth of this festival that always excites me. We have some great things for kids of all ages to get involved in and our enormously diverse information and community stalls. Things like Geckoes Wildlife, the MRCCC’s waterbug discovery table and the speakers tent give us a much better idea about some of the creatures with whom we share this catchment.” There was a lot of interest in Leah Barclay’s RiverListening project, as there was in the Fish Stocking Association’s live display which included the dreaded Tilapia which has recently been reported in the lower Mary.

When it comes to music, Joolie says that performers say the audiences at past festivals here are among the best. “This year we had so many wanting to play that we ran to a second stage and it was wonderful to see that it worked so well.” she said For USA-based band, Fish out of Water, the Mary River Festival was their first performance on their current Australian tour. but they certainly received a warm welcome. “They were absolutely brilliant ‘”said one festival patron. Sunshine Coast music icon Barry Charles and his band Deeper Beat were back by popular demand and delighted the audience in the just-on-dusk time slot before a mesmerizing lantern parade filled with turtles and frogs and cod and lungfish gave way to a laser lightshow took that delight even further. Then it was Sydney-based Psycho Zydeco who showed what high-energy zydeco music was all about and very quickly had the crowd up and dancing. And as the strains of Psycho Zydeco drifted off into the night, and some went on to listen to longstanding festival favorite The Floating Bridges in the Kandanga Hotel, festival MC Ian Mackay quoted Professor Tim Flannery’s comments on the Mary to highlight the reason that underscored the celebration. Tim Flannery and John Doyle had visited the Mary as part of the “Two on the Great Divide” television series and had close encounters with both the unique Mary River, Turtle and the “living fossil” the Lungfish. Of the Mary, Professor Flannery had said, “It’s not our biggest, it’s not our longest, but I reckon the Mary is one of the most important rivers in Australia.” It seemed a more than fitting way to end the celebration.

news Christmas craft and lantern lights at Eumundi Markets

COOROY RAG

CRAFTY kids can get creative in the leadup to Christmas by making beautiful colourful decorations, cards and lanterns at the Original Eumundi Markets. Artist Anne Harris and a team of creative parents from Noosa Pengari Steiner School will host the Rainbow Christmas Craft Tent at the Eumundi Night Markets on Friday 5, 12 and 19 December from 5 – 8pm, and on Saturdays 6, 13 and 20 December from 9am – 2pm. The craft activities will be suitable for all ages and cost is by donation, with money raised helping to support a local family, the Burrell’s. Clay Burrell was an amazing husband and father who suddenly, aged 32, passed away in September this year. His loving partner Tanya and their three beautiful young children, Letti 8, Jarn 6 and Jasper 3 are devastated by this loss. People that knew Clay, say his colourful and bright energy have left an inspirational impression on the community, and that Clay exuded a natural strength and a shining light wherever he went. He was a man of fun, with a big heart whose energy always filled a room with funny jokes, love and laughter.

“The community has pulled together to bring this fun and colourful array of sharing during the lead up to Christmas to help celebrate life, whilst helping the Burrells,” Anne says. “We wish to thank the community far and wide for showing their love, support and generosity, bringing helpfulness and kindness through the simple things that make the family’s daily rhythm a little easier during this incredibly sad journey”. “On behalf of the family, in gratitude, love and light, we thank the community from the bottom of all of our hearts”. Creative kids – and the young at heart – will also have an opportunity to make Christmas lanterns at Eumundi Markets in the lead-up to Christmas. The makers will then have a chance to parade their lanterns at the Eumundi Lantern Parade on the evening on Friday 19 September. The lantern-making workshops are being coordinated by artist and Eumundi local Analiese Long, well versed in workshops from her experience at Woodford Folk Festival. Analiese is also hosting lantern making workshops with students at Eumundi State School.

Managing Stress STRESS less!!! Ask us today how we can help manage your stress naturally. Is Stress Affecting Your Health? Stress is now a common fixture in our hectic, busy lives. Small amounts of stress that are easily resolved can be beneficial in motivating and helping us achieve our goals. Although chronic or long-term stress affects each of us differently; it ultimately affects the whole body in a negative way and may contribute too many health complaints. Is your health being affected by stress? Do you often feel anxious, worried, depressed, irritable, exhausted, overloaded or forgetful? Do you suffer from stiff or sore muscles or joints, tension headaches, high blood pressure, frequent colds or the flu? Or do you have irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, an increase or loss of appetite, or worsening of an existing illness or condition? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, your body may be overburdened by stress. Fight or Flight: Your Response to Stress Thousands of years ago, we may have been faced with the threat of a sabre tooth tiger and our immediate response to this was one of two reactions: to attack or run away. This is now known as the fight or flight response. Once this stress response is triggered, chemical messengers called adrenaline, cortisol and noradrenalin are produced by the adrenal glands and brain. These messengers increase blood flow to the essential organs such as the heart, lungs, brain and muscles to help us fight or run away. Digestive function slows down as this is less important in survival mode. Cortical also increases the amount of sugar released into the blood to provide energy for our muscles to attack or run. In the past, stress was short lived and once the stress was over, these chemical messengers shortly returned to normal. Where’s the Off Switch? Over time our bodies have not changed this biological response to stress. Although the sabre tooth tigers are long gone, the physical threat to our lives and limbs has been replaced with the modern day stress of long work hours, financial worries, traffic jams and family issues. So what happens if this stress response does not turn off because of our non-stop busy lifestyles? Ongoing stress that does not resolve may result in chronic stress, which can be the underlying cause of many health conditions. Chronic stress can impact body systems such as the cardiovascular system by contributing to high blood pressure. It can also take its toll on your nervous system leading to exhaustion, headaches and insomnia. Your digestive and immune

Page 26 - Cooroy Rag, December 3, 2014

systems can also be weakened by stress, making you more susceptible to irritable bowel syndrome, frequent colds and the flu. Herbs and Nutrients for De-stressing Go from ‘dis-stressed’ to ‘de-stressed’ with the help of herbs and nutrients: • NeuroCalm – A herbal blend beneficial during times of stress, nervous tension and mild anxiety. Contains passionflower, zizyphus and magnolia • Relaxan – For Nervous Tension and Irritability – a blend of Chinese herbs used to relieve the symptoms of emotional irritability and may assist with the management of menstrual problems. • Magnesium, glutamine and B vitamins are used in abundance during times of stress, when the body’s requirement for these key nutrients is increased. Magnesium assists in muscle relaxation and calms the nervous system. • Chinese Herbs – have been used for thousands of years - specially prepared by Amy Steinbeck – Doctor of Chinese Medicine. 5 Top Stress Busting Tips: Lessen your stress load by practising the following stress busting strategies: 1. Rest and Relaxation: Relaxation techniques such as tai chi, yoga, meditation, Massage and Acupuncture can help you to control stress and improve physical and mental wellbeing. 2. Think Positive: A good attitude and positive outlook is fundamental for de-stressing. Thinking positively will help you get through a stressful period with greater enthusiasm and drive. 3. Exercise: Exercise is a brilliant form of stress relief, as it conditions the body and mind, and encourages the release of endorphins, which help you feel good. 4. Indulge Yourself: Enjoy a well-deserved massage or some other blissful treatment perhaps soak in a bath with relaxing aromatherapy oils such as lavender, ylang ylang, chamomile or geranium. 5. Eat Healthy Foods: For a healthy mind and body, eat a diet abundant in fresh, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Consume protein with meals and snacks, and enjoy foods high in essential fatty acids such as oily fish, nuts and seeds. Minimise your intake of caffeine, energy drinks, sugar, and alcohol and processed foods as these will contribute to fatigue in the long-term. Stress Less for Good Health and Wellness Although the stress of modern life is inescapable, it is important to remember that we can easily manage our response to stress with the help of dietary and lifestyle changes and some key natural medicines. Supporting a healthy stress response will allow you to feel more energised, resilient and ready to tackle life, so you can maintain the state of health and wellness that you deserve. Ask us today about our Stress Less program, tailored to your individual needs. Will you have “Happy Feet” this summer? As the weather warms up, out come the flip flops and sandals. Unfortunately though, this type of footwear can often result in foot problems and pain. We have already noticed an increase in the number of people presenting to the clinic complaining of heel pain. Many of you will be familiar with this. You wake up and as you put your foot on the ground, there is sharp pain under the heel like you’ve stepped on a pin. The first few steps are very painful, then things ease off. The same happens each morning until gradually the symptoms are there most of the time. This condition is known as plantar fasciitis which is an inflammation of the connective tissue which runs from the ball of the foot to the heel of the foot (plantar fascia). This inflammation is caused by excessive and repetitive strain being placed on the foot without adequate support and /or poor biomechanics. While sandals and flip flops may be cooler to wear in summer, the majority of them have hard, flat soles and no arch support. When choosing summer sandals, be sure to choose a shoe that has some heel

support, arch support and a firm but flexible sole. If you need to walk long distances, try to wear a more supportive shoe rather than sandals. Standard thongs should not be worn at all if you are suffering from heel or foot pain. The earlier that treatment is sought for foot pain, the easier it is to treat. Treatment can include anti-inflammatories, ice, taping, massage, stretches, ultrasound and exercises to improve biomechanics. It is important to ensure that the calf muscles are flexible to allow adequate ankle bend and reduce the strain on the plantar fascia. Foot strengthening exercises can also be included to support the arch and reduce the risk of recurrence. A biomechanical assessment will determine if hip (gluteal muscle) weakness is contributing to the biomechanical problems. If you are suffering from foot pain or need some advice on summer footwear, seek advice from a health professional as soon as possible. Craig and Rebecca Steele own Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Discover how this method of spinal care may work for you. Our approach deals with spinal correction, exercise, rehabilitation and nutritional support Your initial consultation consists of a thorough one on one discussion with Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor) about your complaint, also a chiropractic, neurological & orthopeadic assessment.

Mt Cooroora Burns

by Debra Palmen

The day after MT Cooroora, at Pomona on the Sunshine Coast, is 439 metres of really steep bushland. Really steep. Each year it plays host to the King of the Mountain footrace, in which the fittest (and some say craziest) competitors from Australia and New Zealand run straight up it and straight back down, with the winners completing the circuit in 20 minutes flat. But on the night of Monday, 10 November, Mt Cooroora revisited its ancient history as a volcanic plug by appearing to erupt. The fire started out of a clear blue sky – there was no storm activity at the time – so naturally there is some suspicion around town about how it started. Steve Price, Principal Ranger with the Dept of National Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing said at this point he could not speculate on how it started, but reassured residents there had been no danger to life or property. However it started, as night approached the fire raced up and around the peak, before wending its way back down and giving every impression of being a lava flow. The mountain towers over Pomona, and the night time vision of hell – the first fire on its slopes in 20 years - was striking. The drama was a little off-set, though, by the sight of town locals lined up with their deck chairs and eskies to watch the show from in the town’s park. Debbie Schouten is a Pomona resident who rushed to a good vantage point. “It was so amazing after dark”, she

said. “At one point I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder, and a fearful German backpacker asked ‘Is the volcano erupting?’”. She laughed at the choice she had to make between being a little bit wicked and telling the truth, but in the end truth prevailed. “I told her she was as safe as the rest of us”, she chuckled “but with the mountain right on top of us I’m not sure how reassuring that was!” With no immediate danger to the town or surrounding properties, a couple of the local Photographic Clubs took the opportunity to practice their skills in closer proximity to a large fire than is usually possible. Kim Davies lives little more than a stone’s throw from the mountain, and stayed up into the night to capture some stunning images. The next morning she convened an impromptu breakfast meeting at her home of the Sunshine Coast Photography Group, so others could

share the chance to get some great shots of this rare event. Meanwhile, Jan Wise of the Pomona Pixel People photographic club was equally busy getting photos that many professional press photographers could only long for. Steve Price said that in such rugged terrain and dry conditions the situation was incredibly

dangerous and there was never a question that fire crews would be sent up the mountain to fight the blaze. He noted that the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services personnel often work in close cooperation with their Rural Volunteer colleagues, and between them 14 crews had been called out to manage this emergency. The low breezes during the night

and into the morning of 11 November meant that spot fires from burning embers were limited to the containment area. Mr Price did concede that with the dry conditions and low ground moisture experienced on the Sunshine Coast at the moment, there is a potential for stumps and roots high on the mountain to continue to smoulder and possibly flare up again. But he said a number of planned burns in 2013 and earlier this year had helped to contain this fire, and noted that fire crews would remain vigilant in the coming days and weeks to ensure that all potential flare-up points are out. How grubby the competitors in next year’s King of the Mountain race will become is largely a matter of rainfall. Mr Price said fire crews would ensure that the track up the mountain is stable, but whether lush vegetation regenerates is anyone’s guess at this point. As long as they don’t mind descending the mountain blacked with soot rather than red with exertion, for the competitors the glory of completing this taxing race will remain the same.

Pomona State School pool update

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the Pomona Pool, located on the grounds of Pomona State School. This pool has been an asset not only for the school but also for the whole local community, with many having enjoyed recreational swimming, squad, learn to swim classes and other activities there over the years. Much excitement therefore met the announcement in May this year that, after years of hard work and grant applications by a group of determined parents, over $26000 funding had finally been obtained through the Community Gambling Benefit Fund to heat the pool, allowing for comfortable swimming for 9 months of the year. This heating system has now been installed and Pomona State School students have been reaping the benefits of water up to 28 degrees on cool mornings. The children swim in terms 1 and 4, with swimming being recog-

nised as an important part of the school’s curriculum in addition to its benefits for students’ health and social wellbeing. Whilst the school’s students are currently enjoying the pool, it is with great regret that a licencee has been unable to be secured to operate the pool outside school hours for this summer season. There is a huge demand for community use of the pool, not by just school families looking for extra swim coaching for their children but also by local residents who are looking to keep active. Ongoing efforts are being made to secure a new licensee as soon as possible. Should someone you know be interested in the licence for the Pomona Pool, please contact the school office (Ph 54808222) or Stephen James at Noosa Aquatic Centre (Ph 5448 0288) for more information.

New exhibition in pomona “Synchronicity” POMONA Railway Station Galley will be presenting “SYNCHRONICITY” an exhibition by Gabi dick and Tricia Bradford. The official opening will be Saturday 6 December at 2:00 pm and will run until 8 January. Popular local artists, Gabi Dick and Tricia Bradford have joined forces to present an exhibition of their innovative and imaginative works on paper and canvas. Both known for their often unusual and dramatic techniques, in this case each has produced works that contrast and yet

compliment the other, a synergy of their friendship and artistic talents. The elements of Gabi Dick’s art is diverse from exploring the botanical world around her by depicting the shape, form and development at any stage of the growth of plants, to contemporary depiction of coastal waters, and her desire to incorporate many of the amazing Bradshaw rock art which she encountered while sailing in the Kimberley with her husband. Tricia Bradford has presented large colourful abstract

watercolour works that will surprise the viewers as they discover that each painting is not purely abstract. With fish and fowl the inspiration, each piece has subject matter that is not always visible at first sight. The brightly coloured works are in watercolour inks and acrylic media and will hang separately or as a collection. The main exhibition is supported by a number of smaller works that are more easily interpreted in other mixed media including oil, pastel and encaustic.

Playing Blind ANYONE who plays golf knows it is hard enough to hit the ball when you have eyesight, never mind when you are blind. But that is exactly what Donna McDougall is learning to do, with the help of Marc Bright and his social enterprise AllAbilitiesGolf (AAG). Donna began her golf experience in February 2014. “I was very hesitant at first,” she said, “and I really struggled to hit the ball. But Marc was very patient and encouraging. He has taught me the correct way to swing for the different kinds of clubs and he sets me and the ball up correctly. He then taps the putting hole so that I know where to aim, or makes other percussion noises on various parts of the course. My hearing is very good and I use that to determine the direction and distance. Now that I’ve progressed quite a bit, I enjoy coming to golf.” Cooroy Golf Club is the home base for AAG. The club regularly hosts Marc and his small group of enthusiastic learners; people of vary-

ing ages and with various disabilities. Personnel from the Cooroy Golf Club have generously donated golf clubs and bags. Donna has been the lucky recipient of a complete set of ladies clubs and a bag. The group also visits other clubs such as Gunnabul in Gympie where they also get good support. “There are two aspects of the game I really enjoy and the social interaction is probably the best part. There’s not much in the way of activities for people with disabilities in Gympie (where Donna lives). I have outings with a support worker a couple of times a week, but that is just with one person who is doing a job. This is different as there is a small group of people I am getting to know and we do it through a social situation. We’ve also met a few of the staff and members in Cooroy Golf Club. They are always friendly and welcoming. It is great to have this activity to look forward to during the week. I’m out in the sunshine and fresh air and getting good exercise.

“The other thing I like about coming to golf is that I’m learning new skills. I am now beginning to be aware of when I’m swinging the club correctly and when I’m

not. It is a wonderful sense of achievement when I hear the ball drop into the hole on the putting green, or when Marc cheers because I’ve successfully pitched

the ball onto the green or hit it nicely down the fairway.” Marc Bright has been a professional golfer and is now sharing his passion for the game through AAG. “It’s a great way to get exercise,” says Marc. “One of our group has lost a lot of weight and is much healthier now. Instead of staying indoors watching TV or whatever, they are outside in nature where there are trees and birds and lizards. Cooroy club even has its resident platypus and turtles. I share all this with the participants. They are having fun and learning something new at the same time. They meet people from the club as well as making new friends with each other.” “Good on Marc for all the effort he has put done to get this group going,” said Donna. “He has worked really hard and it is good to be able to help spread the word about AAG.” Interviewed and written by Anne Winning

Countries from all over the world who are members of the Japan Karate Association attended the world cup representing their country. The event is normally held every two years. The students all competed in both kata (form) and kumite (sparring). Zacc Hennings won a gold medal in kumite for 14 year old boys. There were 38 boys in this division. He won

4 fights against competitors from Canada, Sri Lanka, Brazil and then Russia. Then won the final against Brazil. Zacc’s success was more than just winning a gold medal. He was one of only two Australians to win a medal, the other being a silver. More importantly he was the only non-japanese athlete in both the juniors and seniors event to win a gold medal. This is a huge achievement in the Japan Karate Association scene and for JKA Australia. Zacc also competed in kata but lost to England in the first round, who was one of the finalists. Maddison Debono finished in the top 8 in her 13 year old events for both kata and kumite. There were 23 and 24 girls in each event. Fantastic result for Maddi. Jacinta Waretini also finished in the top 8 in the same division as Maddi, 13 year girls. Jacinta won 2 rounds of kata against South Africa and Canada to get to the final 8. (Jacinta also recently competed at the WKF Oceania Championships representing Australian Karate Federation in Fiji in September and won a silver medal.)

Tyndle Colley competed in the 14 year old girls group, with 30 girls in the group. In kata she did a great kata but unfortunately lost to South Africa. In kumite she fought very well against Denmark. After being ahead in the match it then tied and went to a judges decision which she lost 3-2. Very close and was unfortunate it didn’t go her way. Jesse Vines competed in the 16 to 18 years boys. This becomes a large group of 62 boys. In kata Jesse got to the top 16 and then lost to Japan. In kumite he won convincingly in his first round against England and then lost the next one to a fighter from Germany. This group of students from Pomona have done extremely well for the expectations that we had before we left. They have certainly put Pomona dojo on the map in the Japan Karate Association world. A great achievement by all! Thank you very much to all in the community that supported our fundraising efforts to enable these local kids to represent their country in Japan. The experience will be one that they remember throughout their lives.

Win at National Dressage Championships LOCAL Cooroy schoolgirl, 16yo, Elloise Devlin has just recently returned from the Australian National Dressage Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, on her horse Brimstone Anakiwa aka “Sam”. Elloise had gained a place earlier this year in the National Young Rider Squad and has been a member of the QLD Young Rider Squad for a number of years. The combination competed in the FEI Prix St. George class against professionals and adults and although the youngest rider in the class Elloise was the highest placed QLD representative awarded 11th place. She then went on to compete in the CDI-Y for riders between the ages of 1621years, this being the first year she was eligible. She and Sam performed three skilled and fluent tests and won both the CDI-Y Individual and the Team tests. Elloise also was 2nd place (by .15%) in the Freestyle to music. This was an amazing performance and result for a young local rider who has cut her teeth at the local Tewantin Noosa Pony Club and then moved on to higher dressage events around the Sunshine Coast. The horse was co-bred locally and broken in by her mother Sally. Elloise gained the ride on Sam 2 years ago. Earlier in the year she also competed at the National Young Rider Championships and won all four classes she competed in. Elloise currently attends St. Teresa’s College in Noosaville and keeps her horse at her familys propery in Lake Macdonald. She will be travelling a down to Sydney and to Victoria in 2015 to continue to compete in the highest levels of competition in the country.

COOROY RAG

Cooroy Cricket Club ROUND one of the one day competition began for Cooroy on 15th and 2 of the 4 teams managed to get there account under way with A grade and C grade bring home the bacon. A grade played on Sel Bonnel Oval against Coolum, Winning a tight contest, which is was called short because of bad light, with 28 runs still to get the boys got away with a win by run rate. Making it 3 wins on the trot. Cooroy bowled first and Coolum managed a competitive 9/181 off there 40 overs. Mark “Stretch” Wood and Kaleb “ Mummys boy” Hamilton were on there game with the ball taking 3 wickets each. The run chase was a tough one, which was made harder with a modest start of 3/47 but starts from Janos Francis, 27, and Tom

“Bulk runs” Mackee, 36, steadied the ship in the end get the win. B grade had a day to forget, copping a bit of a flogging to the hands a strong Palmwoods outfit. Cooroy bowled first and bowled Palmwoods for 178 off 36.1 overs. Palmwoods got off to the flyer with the bat but the bowls restricted there middle and lower order very well but today wasn’t there day. Crumbling to a forgettable total of 54. C grade showed that they will be a strong team in the one day format, winning against Landsborough by over 100 runs at Cooroy. Cameo’s with bat from Aaron Davis, Ewan “One week in, One week out” Davidson and Mitch “Was all the bat” Kneale helped the total to a very strong 9/252 off there 40 overs. Landsborough

were never in it, with early wickets putting them on the back foot from the word go. Good all around bowling was a good sign for the games ahead, but the stand out were Karl “With a K “Knightinggale and

Sam “Stare down” Cough. 5th grade played Nambour at Nambour and were up against it from the word go with some impressive batting from many of the Nambour team. Nambour scored 9/293

off there 40 overs. The pick of the bowlings again was Phil Giblett, chipping in with 3 wickets. The daunting total set by Nambour was abit to much for our boys, but it wasn’t from lack of trying. Cooroy finished with 9/172, which was a big improvement on recent form. Phil Giblett was again in the thick of the action scoring another half century, finishing off a good individual performance by the old fella. Cougar of the week: Phil Gibblett for having a cracker of a game in a side that struggled all game. Battler of the week: Mitch Kneale for playing a hard fough knock, which was a staple in the teams inns. Pumpkin of the week: Mark Wood for bowling 11 wides in 8 overs but still somehow coming in with figgers of 3/34 off 8.
