Stan Ryan has dedicated more than half his life to helping others. Now 76 years old, he has been volunteering for the Noosa Shire SES for close on 40 years. That’s an impressive run as a volunteer by anyone’s standards but it’s when you consider the type of work that Stan has been involved in that you really have to take your hat off to the man. Stan has come face-to-face with tragedy and adversity more times than most people can imagine. Not that you’ll ever hear Stan boasting about any of his achievements. A quietly modest “no fuss” kind of man, Stan’s tendency is to play everything down, even when talking about the various awards and medals he’s been awarded over the years (including an Australia Day Achievement Medallion, Queensland SES Member of the Year, and many more). It’s a good thing that Stan’s wife, Lyn, has been keeping a record of sorts over the years, cutting out relevant newspaper articles that chronicle some of the incidents Stan has attended with the SES. As you page through these scrapbooks you start to understand the kind of commitment required for this type of work. Stan first arrived in Cooroy back in 1967 as assistant station master for Queensland Railways. In 1972 he was promoted to station master and transferred elsewhere but he returned to live in Cooroy in 1980 working as station master at Monkland near Gympie. In 1989 he was made redundant and that’s when he started to concentrate more on his SES work. He had

already been deputy controller for Noosa SES since 1983. In 1992 he was made controller, a position he held for 12 years until handing over in 2004. He then had another stint as controller from 2010 to 2017. A lot of the work involved accidents on the Bruce Highway. In one 24 hour period he remembers being called out to seven different accidents on the highway. The work was different back then because the SES played a much bigger role in what they called “road accident rescue”. This included extracting trapped people from vehicles (“until the Fire Service took it over”). Using his own Holden Commodore to tow a trailer full of equipment, Stan and his SES colleagues would assist the police with scene protection and work with QAS to treat and extricate injured people. Stan went on to teach First Aid with SES, along with other skills acquired over the years including traffic control, land search, storm damage operations, level 1

Stan Ryan has volunteered for the Noosa Shire SES for almost 40 years chainsaw operations and many more. Today, he is still involved in training, mainly in the use of chainsaws (to cut fallen trees after storm damage), with training courses taking him all over the region. Although the role of the SES has changed a fair bit over the years, Stan maintains that the work is still vitally important stressing the need for ongoing training “to keep the standards high”.

Meanwhile, Stan has no plans to stop his work with SES and will continue to do his best to “pass on the knowledge gathered over the years”. He has also been a member of the local Ambulance committee, a foundation member of the Cooroora woodworkers, worked with Noosa Shire Council to start the Camphor Laurel Group, is a current member of the Cooroy Future Group and also volunteers at the

Rattler Railway in Gympie. Why does he do it? His answer is simple: “You try to help people in your community because you never know when you are going to need help yourself.”

A Cooroy Termite & Pest Control community initiative

From the desk of MP Marty Hunt

In my last column I mentioned that I had sent the Minister for Transport and Main Roads a request for an update on planning for the dangerous intersec-

tions at Myall and Elm Streets and Diamond and Elm Streets. The Minister’s response is “Key stakeholders and the community were able to provide feedback on the concept from November 2018 to February 2019. Following feedback received, TMR is currently in the process of finalising planning. The final planning options for both intersections will be

announced in due course. TMR will continue to provide progress updates to the Member for Nicklin, key stakeholders and the local community.” “Announced in due course” I sincerely hope means very soon. I will keep you updated on any further information I receive. On a lighter note I look forward to joining the community at the Bendigo Bank Street parade on Saturday December 7.

Once again, I’ve been asked to be a parade judge and I look forward to seeing all the community floats. Last year was exceptional and I’m sure everyone is working hard to make this one a success. As we move into the Christmas period, I’m delighted to be attending many community celebrations throughout my electorate and meeting many more Nicklin constituents.

news Get ready for Christmas in Cooroy this weekend

COOROY RAG

Some of the elves who helped decorate Cooroy

Only a wonderful community like Cooroy could have a magical Christmas event like Christmas in Cooroy where everything is free! It doesn’t cost anything to go to Christmas in Cooroy and it also doesn’t cost you anything while you are there because pretty much everything is free! That makes this festival stand out from all the rest thanks to the fantastic sponsors and the generous volunteers who help the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce put this event on every year for the last 15 years for our community! You heard it – 15 Years of celebrations this year and the Christmas Elves have made it bigger and better than ever! A run through the

program on the website shows that there is a lot on offer to suit all ages and interests. If musical entertainment appeals, you can catch the Coast Academy of Song and Dance at 4pm; Pineapple Crush at 6pm and Claptomaniacs playing through the evening all on the Cooroy Supa IGA Main Stage in Apex Park. At 4.30pm there is the awesome Bendigo Bank Street Parade with over 30 floats decorated to the theme of “A Moment in Time”, all vying for the chance to win Best Float and led by the Noosa District Pipe Band. If dress up is your thing, then get your best Christmas outfit on and join the Bentleys Great Santa Stroll for the chance to

win a $200 prize for best dressed. Or if you’d like to just join in the stroll and help raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation, register at the Santa Stroll desk and get a free Santa costume to wear! For some oldfashioned fun, join in the Cooroy Fish n Chips Santa Sack Races or the Giant Games like Giant Egg & Spoon Race, Jenga, Connect 4 and checkers sponsored by Eden Private Hospital. Or grab a photo in the free photo booth sponsored by Fiducian Financial Services. All the rides are free too! There are Giant Rides including slide, jumping castle and tea cups sponsored by Cooroy Rag; mini 4WDs sponsored by Madill Motor Group;

laser tag sponsored by Sunny Coast Accountants; and a baby animal farm sponsored by Cooroy Country Wear & Jeanery. The free rides are popular so there are often lines but nobody minds waiting as The Leather Doctor has you covered with free popcorn to nibble while you wait. There is also free face painting thanks to SPV Accounting and the Cooroy Legal Centre Foam Party with fluffy foam to play in – a great way to cool down! If all of that free stuff isn’t enough for you, there is also the Belvedere News & Cooroy Computers East versus West Tug of War where businesses and residents from each side of the railway tracks battle it out with the big rope.

You can even join in if you get in and register early! Santa even visits thanks to Gelignite Jacks and you can visit him in Santa’s grotto and get a little treat while you tell him your most secret Christmas wishes. To top off the night is the Cooroy RSL fireworks at 7.15pm with a colour explosion in the sky. All safely monitored by the awesome team at KCs Fireworks with support from our local fire brigade and SES who also do a great job of traffic control throughout the event. There are a couple of things you can spend your money on including some delicious food stalls, a few market stalls with novelties, a bar sponsored by Cooroy Hotel and the fantastic raffle sponsored by Mower & ATV Solutions and MTD Australia which helps fund this amazing free event. This event is run by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce with support from the Rotary Club of Cooroy, a community grant from Noosa Council and sponsorship from the sponsors mentioned as well as Firefly Solutions, Studio Steel, Zinc 96.1 FM, Noosa Care Inc, the Shed Company, Palm Lake Resort, Aaction Traffic, Cooroy Family Practice, Wythes Real Estate, SPM Law, Sunshine Mitre 10, Live Life Pharmacy, Hinternoosa Real Estate and Cooroy Pest Control.

Woodcraft Show hailed a terrific success The ever popular Cooroy Memorial Hall was the venue for the Cooroora Woodworkers Club annual Woodcraft Show over the third Friday and Saturday of September. This event has been hailed a terrific success by club President John Gygar. “Our Show attracted many visitors, including locals, people from the Sunshine Coast and holidaymakers from further afield,” said John. “We re-

ceived very positive feedback from attendees, many of whom said there was a very welcoming feel about the event with a great variety of exhibitors .” The member for Noosa, Sandy Bolton opened the show and heaped praise on the quality of the woodwork on display. “It is wonderful to see a community-based club such as the Cooroora Woodworkers going from strength to strength, and the exhibits on show are a

credit to the skill of the club members,” she told the crowd. As part of the Show, woodworking clubs from as far away as Ipswich and Bundaberg battled to be judged the best in a variety of woodworking skills. Members of the Ipswich Woodcrafts Club were excited to win the inter-club competition. Visitors to the Show were able to view beautiful exhibits including woodturning, carving, boxes, furniture, intarsia, fretwork and toys. Items on display included work by local school students, and many visitors remarked on the quality of their work. Demonstrations throughout the two days kept visitors entertained, while the free boxmaking activity was a hit for the kids. The Cooroora Woodworkers major raffle for the year was drawn during the show, with the chance of winning a practical mobile kitchen/BBQ chopping block crafted by members of the club. The lucky winner was a gentleman from Mooloolaba, who was thrilled to receive the

call to tell him of his win. Another highlight of the show was the 1.5m Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (Quanda) chainsaw sculptured by the very talented Shane Christensen from a log of local Quandong. This drew much attention at the entrance to the hall. After spending some time being admired in the clubhouse, Quanda fetched an admirable price and is now fully acquainted in its new home. During the prize-giving ceremony to conclude the Woodcraft Show, President John Gygar praised the hardworking club members who had worked to deliver such a successful event, and thanked the many local businesses which donated prizes and sponsored the activity. John thanked Cooroy Outdoor Power Equipment , Countrylife Realty, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Cooroy Supa IGA, Sunshine Mitre 10, the Cooroy RSL Club, Saw & Mill restaurant, Cooroy Hotel, the Cooroy Rag and Noosa Shire Council for their generous support. John summed up his closing address by saying,

news Cooroy lights up!

“I’m very proud of our club and its members, and I’m delighted with the way that local people and local businesses helped make our Woodcraft Show for 2019 such a roaring success. Thank you!” Finally, the Cooroora Woodworkers Club look forward to making more shavings for the Cooroora Woodcraft Show on September 11 & 12 in 2020.

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS

Walk right into Summer! with new styles from

BOUQUETS: Tony Rickards and I hosted (with absolute dread) the class of 2019 after grad party - only because our daughter Demi is quite simply, a really responsible, respectful person. We just wanted her grad to be perfect - and let me tell you - all you other parents obviously feel the same about your kids because I would have been proud to call all of them my own! Yes they got drunk, fell over and did funny stuff - but for every one kid that was under the weather, there was a friend looking after them! So refreshing to know that the future looks bright - and that’s because of our kids! Thank you to Dylan Crawford Window, Erin Crawford Window and Lyvia Girvan for looking out for the kids - they were in good hands! CLASS OF 2019 - you absolutely rock ~ Jodie Crawford BOUQUET to our hard working volunteers for the wonderful job you do. Each and every one of you deserve a big bouquet and at this time of year a special thanks to the volunteers who go about decorating our town for Christmas and spreading some Christmas cheer. Well here it is - that special time of year again. As we prepare to welcome a new decade and a magical time of year, it’s a good idea to keep a close watch on your finances. If you’re anything like me, you tend to leave your purchases a little late and put everything on the credit card. That’s fine, as long as remember to attend to it before the Boxing Day sales really get you to a point of no return ... Here are some suggestions to keep things on track over the festive season: • Plan the purchase of your Christmas gifts to suit your budget. Write down everyone that you need to buy for and keep your eye out for specials in catalogues sent by many of the larger shops. Do your best to spot a bargain this week and take advantage of the post Christmas sales in preparation for next year. • Budget for Christmas by saving in a Christmas Club account. As little as $20 per week will mount up to over $1,000 in a year’s time. Where you can, avoid using the credit card and use this savings instead. • Make the most of our wonderful local markets with home made goodies that can be given as gifts or even better, make your own gifts. It’s amazing what you can find and put together to make a wonderful homemade hamper, and (as we all know) nothing is more special than a handmade personalised gift. • If you have a large family to buy for, consider a secret Santa gift, where only one gift is purchased but everyone in the family still gets a present. • Don’t go overboard in the food department; plan your menus appropriately to suit your budget. Most of us overindulge at Christmas time way too much. • While it may sound funny, don’t forget to look at increasing your contents insurance if you have lashed out on some bigger items for Christmas and if you’re lucky enough to be doing any kind

of international or domestic travel, don’t forget about your travel insurance. Hopefully these ideas will make things a little easier over this Christmas season and give you something to think about and work towards for next Christmas. Just a reminder that the Cooroy Community Bank branch will be closed from December 2, to transform the branch into new and vibrant space. The branch will re-open for business on Tuesday, December 10 at 9.00am. During the renovation period, the Pomona Community Bank branch will be open from 9.00am - 5.00pm from December 2 - December 6 inclusive at 3 Station Street, Pomona. The ATM at the Cooroy branch will remain operational with the Cooroy team in a pop-up site in front of the branch to work with customer needs where they can. The Tewantin Noosa branch will be available and open 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday as well. Apart from the obvious visible improvements to the Cooroy branch, our customers will enjoy new hi-tech conveniences. Like our Tewantin Noosa Community Bank branch, the first thing everyone will notice will be the size of our new branch. It’s basically a going the be a community hub with a bank in the middle of it. We’re all really excited for our customers. Apart from being a full-service bank with industry leading customer service, our new Cooroy branch will be a custom built, customer-focussed branch. Our customers can talk one-on-one with specialist members of the branch team in a comfortable sitdown environment. I have one more column for you this year, but hope the words above help you plan for an exciting end to 2019 and a great start to 2020. COOROY RAG

With a month until Christmas, Australia Post is keeping Post Office doors open longer at over 190 locations as it moves into its busiest festive period in history. Residents in Pomona can visit their local Post Office six days a week during the extended retail hours of 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday, and 9:00am – 12:00pm Saturday until December 22. Australia Post General Manager Post Office Network David McNamara said extended trading hours gives customers more choice and convenience in time for the big day. “We know Christmas is a busy time of the year, so the Pomona Post Office will remain open for longer this festive season,” Mr McNamara said. “Extended opening times provide our customers greater flexibility to send, and receive, their

Christmas gifts and cards, and with our exciting new range of products available in-store there is more opportunity to spread the merry this Christmas.” Mr McNamara said Australians continue to shop up a storm, with online purchases growing over 20 per cent last year. “The online shopping boom continues, in fact last year Australians spent $27.5 billion online. Last Christmas we delivered 40 million parcels in December alone and we’re expecting to exceed that number this year.” Along with extended trading hours, Australia Post customers also can collect their Christmas gifts at a free 24/7 parcel locker in over 350 locations across the country, and can track their deliveries online.

news Mayor calls for a rethink on fireworks this summer

COOROY RAG

The recent string of unprecedented fire events has sparked Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington to call for closer scrutiny on the use of fireworks across the Shire. “Noosa Council does not run any fireworks displays of its own, unlike many other councils,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “However, we do occasionally provide permits for community events that include fireworks displays. It’s important to note that Council is not actually the headof-power when it comes to permitting fireworks displays. Permits for such activities have to be obtained from the State Government’s Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.” Cr Wellington said the Department issues permits for fireworks with no consultation with Council. “Council has no role in the approval process when fireworks occur on private land or the river that may be associated with private events such as weddings or parties,” he said. Council staff only have a role in issuing permits for fireworks when they are proposed to occur on land Council controls. Council has a shirewide Events Policy which generally will not approve of fireworks occurring other than during community events at Christmas and New Year’s Eve. “With the changing nature of fire conditions over the past two years, I think we may need to reconsider even that degree of latitude.” Cr Wel-

lington said. The Mayor has called on event organisers to rethink their approach to fireworks. “What we have seen recently are fires occurring well out of season and even in the sort of vegetation that would not usually be considered a major fire risk. As well as being a potential fire risk, of course fireworks can also be problematic for owners of animals, cause noise issues and produce other environmental concerns such as litter.” “For some years, Pomona’s Night of Lights, hosted by Pomona Community House and Cooroy Pomona Lions, has provided a spectacular laser light show as an alternative to fireworks. This has been very well received by patrons. This modern approach is not only more environmentally friendly, but arguably more in-keeping with the sustainability principles with which Noosa is associated.” Cr Wellington will write to Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy asking them to reconsider their existing lenient approach to permits for public fireworks. “It really is time that the State Government was up to speed with community concern about the potential impact of fireworks, the messaging that permitted fireworks displays send to the public, and the changing nature of fire risk in Queensland.”

Schools join the race to zero Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN) is inviting Noosa Shire schools to participate in the Race to Zero, another exciting emission reduction project for Noosa. “We are delighted that Tewantin, Noosaville, Eumundi, Cooroy Primary and Sunshine Beach High School are already on board and will be ready to use their real-time energy data in the curriculum in 2020,” said ZEN Project Officer Dalia Mikhail. “Schools are a large consumer of electricity and a great place to teach students how to reduce their energy use. Through the exploration of real energy data in the classroom, we can hypothesise and observe in real time how changes in our behaviours impact on energy use and the environment”. Participating schools receive access to their real-time energy data leading to a reduction in energy waste. Delivered via the www.solarschools.net platform, a ZEN

There a wide range of cross-curricular resources on the website to help support classroom use. Principal of Cooroy Primary School Matt Bulger states “we look forward to utilising our real-time energy data in the classroom, it will help us explore where energy is used around our school and how we can take action to reduce it”. Schools not only have access to their data via the solarschools.net website they can also use the Planet Watch APP. Every school is represented as a planet in the solar system and the physical health of the planet depends on the real energy decisions made by the school. The program is led by ZEN, with joint funding by the Department of Education and a Noosa Council Environment Grant. Schools in the Noosa Shire are invited to join free of charge. Just when you thought the Cooroy Memorial Hall renovations couldn’t look any better, this magnificent community asset has lifted its game yet again. With the generous support of Noosa Council through a Community Project grant a new space has been created inside the hall, and it’s a game changer. Cooroy Memorial Hall has a large auditorium which is the main space used for events, and a carpeted annexe area to the side with a bar and kitchen. New folding concertina doors have been installed which can separate these two areas, creating a more flexible and usable space for hirers of the hall.

The carpeted annexe area could be used for performers to prepare instruments or change costumes, and with the doors closed offers greater quality of acoustics for performers and audiences alike. A space for caterers to prepare and present meals without distracting from audience experience or a separate space for children during functions such as weddings. A space available for hall hirers who prefer a more intimate gathering. The new doors simply look great, and the Cooroy community wishes to thank Noosa Council for their ongoing support. Hall bookings are welcome and are made through the website https://cooroyhall.org.au/

Blast from the past Noel Shipp brought us in a page from his grandfather’s (Henry Jorgensen) farm ledger from 1927/28. Henry owned a cane farm near Bundaberg and just this one page of his ledger gives us a glimpse into not only how much farm practices have changed but also how much inflation has grown in 90 years. Cooroy General Motors Dealer 1920s: A.V. Lilley was the man to see if you needed a new car in Cooroy in the 1920s. His General Motors dealership in Maple Street (where Daddows Honda used to be and is now a restaurant) stocked and cared for all manner of motor cars from all around the district. He also had a branch in nearby Cooran. The heavily adapted vehicle at left was fairly typical of the home made conversions that many cars underwent on farms across Australia. Cooroy’s main street, Maple Street (1911): From 1885 sawmillers Dath Henderson and Co. held 5507 acres stretching from Mt Cooroy westwards including what is now the township area. The timber industry was central to the development of Cooroy, once the railway line was completed in 1891. The railway station was a focal point of the district. Horse drawn coaches transferred mail, goods and passengers to the coastal resorts. This photo shows a pair of ladies walking down Maple Street in 1911 when the town had expanded more.

Eumundi Brewers call on songwriters Calling singer songwriters! The brewers at Eumundi Brewery are chasing a song that encapsulates the vibe of their village and the hinterland groove – and they are calling on songwriters to get creative. Head Brewer (and music lover) Chris Sheehan says they are offering more than just a couple of pale ales to the songwriter that delivers the right tune – with $10,000 up for grabs for the winner! “Eumundi is a pretty special hinterland town – in fact the tagline for our brews is ‘It’s Pretty Good Here’,” he says. “And we want to celebrate that with a song that really speaks about why it’s so darn good.” “We’re pretty good at making beer, but not so good at writing songs, so we thought it best to throw out that challenge to the many musos and singer songwriters here on the Coast,” Chris says.

“We want musicians to capture why ‘It’s Pretty Good Here’ – why Eumundi and the surrounding hinterland is just so good, in a song,” says Chris. “And you don’t need to be a professional muso to get involved,” says Chris. “There’s probably plenty of talented folk who just need an excuse to dust off their guitar or practice some catchy lyrics in their shower singing sessions!” The Eumundi’s Pretty Good Song Competition is being run with the help of Announcers Todd and Sami at 92.7 Mix FM. Each entry needs to be an MP3 file or a video file of you performing your song, along with a text file of the long lyrics. The song needs to be an original (some of the entrant’s own work). These must be uploaded to www.mixfm.com.au by the competition deadline of Monday 27 January 2020. Competition entry opens on Monday 2 December.

‘Let it Bleed’ fundraiser Put Friday 6 December in your diary for what is going to be a rockin’ night when The Honey Sliders and Tim Rogers come together to play ‘Let it Bleed’ in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. They’ll be supported by the fabulous Dana Gehrman. The night is a fundraiser for charity Support Act. From the harrowing opening track Gimme Shelter, to the album’s poignant closure You Can’t Always Get What You Want, The Rolling Stones’ 1969 album ‘Let it Bleed’ was a coming of age that cemented their place in the pantheon of classic rock. Released only weeks after their founder Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool, and only days before the disaster of the Altamont festival, ‘Let it Bleed’ heralded a new sound and direction for the Rolling Stones. Crashing onto the Australian music landscape in the mid 90’s, Tim Rogers has proven himself to be one of the few true rock stars to come out of Australia. Widely regarded as one of our greatest storytellers and hard rocking gentlemen, Tim is well versed in all the attributes required to sing these songs with conviction. Tim has fronted The Honey Page 20 - Cooroy Rag, December 4, 2019

Sliders before when they recreated The Stones’ album ‘Sticky Fingers’ in 2016. The Honey Sliders are the Brisbane-based country/rock/soul outfit led by singer/songwriter Danny Widdicombe (The Wilson Pickers, The GoBetweens, Bernard Fanning and more). With a deep love of retro music, The Honey Sliders have wowed Queensland audiences with their annual concept shows recreating classic albums. The support for the night is Brisbane’s own retro groover Dana Gehrman. Danny Widdicombe has been fighting off leukaemia for 24 years and along the way he has been aided by the music industry philanthropic charity Support Act. In return, Danny put on The Honey Sliders first annual fundraiser for Support Act in 2018. It was such a success, Danny invited Tim Rogers to join them for this special event - The Honey Sliders 2nd Annual Fundraiser for Support Act. TICKETS: Pre-sale $30 at The Imperial Hotel (Ph:5442 8811) or through Oztix (+booking fee). $35 on door UNLESS SOLD OUT. Doors open at 7.30pm, courtesy bus phone 0467 414 171.

Stay fresh this summer Here’s some handy tips from our Livelife Pharmacy to help us all stay healthy and feel fresh over our scorching summer months. Use a hydrating Moisturiser To seal in the moisture, right after you step out of the shower, use some moisturiser on your skin, while your skin is still damp. Generously apply sunscreen lotion all over your body to protect yourself from the harmful ultraviolet radiations. Keep yourself Hydrated During summer, your body tends to lose a lot of water through sweat, so drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and keep yourself cool during the heat. Avoid Caffeine Caffeinated drinks and beverages, such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks will dehydrate your body. So try to stay away from caffeinated drinks and try to include more water. If you do not like plain water, you can have refreshing fruit infused water. Wear Cotton Clothes Cotton is the perfect fabric for your summer clothes. It is light, it comes in a range of colours to suit your summery mood, it is a very cooling fabric so it will prevent your body from over-heating and even if you do sweat, and it will absorb perspiration and keep you fresh. Don’t Eat Heavy Meals Your diet during the summer is one

of the main factors that will determine how fresh you can stay. Eating heavy meals can be too much on your digestive system. You may begin to feel lethargic and perhaps nauseous as your digestive system rebels. So, eating lighter meals during the hotter months – salads, soups, juices, fruit meals, lean meats are all wonderful, healthy summer food options. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Heat can really wear you out. Generally you feel more tired in the summer months than during other seasons. What’s worse is that it can be very difficult to sleep in the summer because the heat can make you restless. It is important that you get a good night’s sleep if you want to stay fresh through the day. A cold shower before bed or choosing to sleep in the coolest room in the house can make the world of difference. Take care of others Visit or call elderly friends, neighbours or relatives at least once a day. Check they have water in the fridge and encourage them to drink it. You may like to take them to a shopping centre, library or cinema with airconditioning. Children also need to be reminded to drink water, and babies, children or animals should never be left alone in a car, even if the air-conditioner is on. Ensure animals have water and plenty of shade if they are outside.

Mandy Gopurenko (Eden), Jo Munday (Eden), Matthew Bulger (Principal), Nicole French (Eden), Adam Garvey (Deputy Principal) with Cooroy SS students Eden Private Hospital recently ran an art competition at Cooroy State Primary School where the students were asked to create a piece of art that represented ‘Happiness’. “The entries we received were outstanding, it was very difficult to choose the winners,” said Jo Munday, CEO of Eden Private Hospital.

“The competition really opened up a great dialogue between students, teachers and our Psychologist Nicole around gratefulness and mindfulness,” said Jo. A number of fantastic pieces of artwork created by the students of Cooroy State Primary School are displayed in the reception area of Eden Private Hospital for all to admire.

Fundraising for mental health

The Art Hub Cooroy features Ian Richter and Peter Scott’s work in their latest exhibition which will run until December 19. Ian Richter has a background as a scenic Artist for stage, film and television. He started working on Neg Image photos 10 years ago while painting a mural. Ian is not a photographer, but rather, an Artist with a

camera. Making light of the dark speaks to those people who have depression, for within the image’s reversed state, all darkness becomes light and colour is reversed. It is hoped that by “turning it around” people who suffer from depression and related mental illness can be helped through an awareness and greater understanding of mental illness; people will know there is help out there and that they don’t have to go through it alone. To that end Ian is donating 50% of any sales during this exhibition to Beyond Blue and Lifeline for suicide prevention. Customer support is greatly appreciated. Peter Scott has just returned from Japan and the Gallery is very privileged to exhibit some exquisite ceramic works of art created in Japan. These creations are currently for display only but all his other works displayed in this exhibition are for sale to art lovers.

What does your poo say about you? Nobody wants to talk about it, but your toilet habits can say a lot about your overall health. Do you spend way too much time in the loo or experience constipation, diarrhoea, pain, bloating or flatulence? These symptoms can be a sign you may have a functional gut disorder. It is important to ensure your digestive function is top notch, as it impacts the health of your whole body and how you feel each day. Dietitian and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. How often you move your bowels can be an indicator of how well your gut is functioning. While daily bowel motions are ideal, having a slow transit time of less than three poos a week is considered clinical constipation, while frequent, loose stools may indicate diarrhoea. Follow on symptoms such as pain, bloating, flatulence, and straining, feelings of incomplete emptying, or even seeing undigested food, blood or mucus in the toilet can all indicate a potential functional gut disorder, and this needs to be managed effectively. Diet, stress, and your past health history may all play a part in the development of functional gut disorders. An imbalance in the gut microbiota (bacteria and other organisms in the gut), and irritation and inflammation from dietary or immune triggers may lead to increased permeability in the gut lining (leaky gut), exacerbating symp-

toms. You may even fit the criteria for conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Simple ways to get your digestive system back on track are: 1) Ensure you get adequate fibre to feed the gut bacteria and help keep you regular. 2) Drink water daily - 2 litres is a good place to start. If you’re constipated, it helps moisten the stool, or can replace fluid lost with diarrhoea. 3) Exercise regularly; movement improves circulation to your digestive tract to support healthy bowel function and keep you regular. 4) Fermented foods e.g. sauerkraut, kimchi or kombucha may provide additional gut friendly bacteria too. Strain specific probiotics and prebiotic fibres can also help promote a healthy gut microbiota and relieve functional gut issues. For example, the probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, and partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) help improve constipation, bloating, pain and flatulence. These two ingredients have been shown to improve motility (make it easier to poo) and ease the associated symptoms of functional gut issues. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Kindness makes the world go around

World Kindness Day was held on Wednesday 13th November. To celebrate one of our favourite days of the year, The Kindness Club gathered at the Cooroy State School Centenary Garden to hand out 120 vouchers for free ice blocks at the school tuckshop. To encourage further kindness, each student was given two vouchers - a voucher for themselves and one to give a friend. health Lakeridge offers the latest in skin therapy treatments

COOROY RAG

Lakeridge Health, Beauty & Skin Clinic’s DermaFrac is an exciting new treatment that combines Crystal Free Microdermabrasion, Dermal Micro Channelling (Skin Needling), deep tissue serum infusion and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Light Therapy. The DermaFrac machine provides simultaneous delivery of infused ingredients in a pain free treatment with no downtime. The DermaFrac machine takes micro-needling to a whole new level and is exclusively administered by our specialised skin therapists. We offer a variety of Dermafrac Treatment options that are designed to improve the appearance of the skin. How does DermaFrac work? By combining precisely calibrated needle penetration and unprecedented infusion capability, DermaFrac creates micro channels to the dermal junction while simultaneously infusing topical serums to this all-important tissue layer. The DermaFrac system uses a unique combination of technologies to enable an improved micro-needling procedure along with immediate infusion of a powerful active serum. The precision-controlled DermaFrac hand piece pulls the skin under vacuum into contact with hundreds of micro-needles that painlessly penetrate through the epidermis and into the upper dermis (the papillary layer). The vacuum permits an allimportant even penetration to the full depth of the needle and can be adjusted to make the treatment deeper. DermaFrac micro-needles create pathways for introducing the infusion serum into the skin. Dermafrac skin exfoliation process reveals the new, living skin cells that are soft, smooth & receptive to nutrients. This procedure will also stimulate new collagen and elastin production thus improving fine lines and texture. The depth of needles on the DermaFrac hand piece has been carefully selected so that the channels are created just below the dermal-epidermal junction and just above capillaries and nerve end-

ings. This ensures no bleeding or pain. What is DermaFrac used for? DermaFrac improves the appearance of: Fine lines and wrinkles; Aging skin; UV damage; Sun damage and pigmentation; Enlarged pores; Skin’s strength; Oily congested skin; Dry & Dehydrated skin. What serums are available with the DermaFrac? There are four different serums available for DermaFrac treatments: Hydrate – This serum uses Hyaluronic acid with a patented technology called Hylasponge to form a fully hydrated layer that helps guarantee that hydration is delivered into deeper layers of skin. It also delivers intense hydration to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Clarify – The clarify solution features two key active ingredients. Salicylic acid opens clogged pores and neutralizes bacteria within the pores. It reduces pore congestion and breakouts on skin. Lactic acid, part of the alpha hydroxy acid family, exfoliates the outer layer of skin and increases collagen production to minimise fine lines and wrinkles and reduce blackheads and whiteheads. Rejuvenate – This serum has five active ingredients that stimulate fibroblast and collagen production in the skin. They also help relax muscles to prevent wrinkling from repeated muscle movement. Lighten – This serum utilises Kojic acid to lighten skin by suppressing melanocyte activity and pigmentation. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. How do I know if DermaFrac is right for me? At Lakeridge Health, Beauty & Skin Care we ensure each client new to our clinic has a thorough consultation in which the Skin Therapist will ascertain which products and treatments are best suited to your skin or your skin concerns. So get your skin looking its best for summer. Call Lakeridge Health, Beauty & Skin Clinic on 5442 6239 or call into the Clinic at 11 Garnet Street, Cooroy.

health Maximise your optical extras

COOROY RAG

Before 2019 comes to a close, optometry@cooroy are reminding those in our local community with private health insurance that there are many ways to maximise their optical extras depending on the different ways they use their eyes. “Our job as eye care and eyewear experts is to understand what will benefit you most and help you achieve the sharpest vision possible with a highly tailored solution. It’s what we love about our job,” says Optical Dispenser Ray Smith from optometry@cooroy. “Being truly independent, we have the choice of a huge range of technologies and products to choose from when looking at which eyewear will best suit your needs – whether you spend your time in front of digital screens, outdoors, playing sport or just wanting a new look to complement your current pair. We can help you make the most of your optical extras.” Optometrist Jenny Currie reminds us that “One pair of glasses won’t necessarily do it all. Many people make do with just one pair of glasses simply because they aren’t aware that a single general purpose pair can result in compromising their vision in certain situations. “ Six ways that optical extras can be claimed with optometry@cooroy no matter which health fund. Digital Eyewear: Eye fatigue, blurred vision and headaches are becoming more and more commonplace, as are neck, shoulder and back pain. This is no surprise given that Australians spend an average of 10 hours and 24 minutes on digital devices every day. A dedicated pair of digital eyewear is recommended for people who spend 2 or more hours in front of digital screens, to help protect the eyes from the strain of their changing visual environment. Prescription Sunglasses: Prescription sunglasses are one of life’s necessities for glasses wearers in our bright Queensland environment. Now that there are so many prescriptible frame

www.cooroyrag.com.au

options available, almost anyone can enjoy the outdoors with superior clarity and protection from damaging UV and glare at the same time. With summer just around the corner, a pair of prescription sunglasses is the perfect way to maximise one’s optical extras. Contact Lenses: Contact lenses give people the freedom they need when glasses can get in the way. Like for sport, travel, weekends and special occasions. The everyday pair simply doesn’t meet every need. With the latest technologies in contact lenses, even the multifocal wearer can see as clearly at varying distances as they would with glasses. Reading Glasses: Close up activities like reading and computer work can put a strain on the eyes and neck. Progressive powered lenses (also known as multifocals) can eliminate the need to constantly remove or peer over the top of a pair of glasses. Depending on one’s level of cover, reading glasses are often completely covered by optical benefits. Sports Eyewear: Prescription sports-specific eyewear are designed to protect the eyes from both injury and harmful UV rays. Something an everyday pair is not built to do. Sports eyewear can enhance one’s performance and visual comfort on the field. Driving Glasses: Vision is responsible for around 90% of the information we use for driving, which is why even a small change in vision is cause for concern. Poor vision is a contributor to road accidents and yet it’s a risk every driver can easily reduce with a regular eye examination and the right eyewear recommendation. optometry@cooroy has been proudly servicing the Cooroy community for twelve years. The team, with their decades of collective experience, can recommend wise ways to invest one’s optical extras this year. optometry@cooroy can be contacted on 5442 5555 and is located at 62 Maple Street. www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

Last week marked the end of the Sports Rec Program for 2019 with the year 6 Cooroy State School students. “Impact Boxing is proud to be able to play a voluntary part of such a great program,” said trainer Mark Evans. “The Sports Rec Program is a fantastic initiative by the Cooroy State School designed to give the kids choices through sport by providing them with various sports to choose from and try out, instead of pushing them down the football and cricket funnel. Each week in term 4 a different class of students turn up to the gym to try boxing. Most have only ever seen a boxing gym on the TV. “The enthusiasm and excitement when they first walk into the gym is priceless,” said Mark. “Once again it’s been a pleasure working with the Staff and students this year and we look forward to doing it all over again next year.”

Cooroy Eumundi Cougars Master Blasters Junior Blasters is for kids new to cricket with participants building their skills through fun, game based activities. The games are designed for small groups to ensure every child gets a go, allowing them to test and learn new skills. When they have mastered the basics they graduate to Master Blasters where they play modified games of cricket. Master Blasters is a super fun, social, safe, cricket program for boys and girls aged 7 to 10. The program is much shorter than traditional cricket, with a maximum of 90 minutes playing time.
