Taking the right turn into Tulip Street

Cooroy’s Memorial Hall is now structurally sound again

CMHA’s building supervisor Phil McGrath said all the major structural work required on the hall had been completed. “Our builder, Harry Kirk, and our volunteers have been over every inch of the building. The hall’s sub-floor has been packed and supported, and every antcap inspected and fixed,” Mr McGrath said. “We had to crawl over a lot of broken glass under the building.” Mr McGrath said the flat-pitched roof over the hall’s dining annex had also been removed and would be replaced with a new, insulated zincalume roof, while new gyprock would soon be laid over the existing ceiling. Noosa Council has offered to engage consultants to look

at ways of improving the hall’s ventilation so it was not too hot in summer, he said. Inside the hall, work is progressing on a new kitchen and toilet facilities. Vinyl flooring, including slip-resistant vinyl for the kitchen, has been chosen and will soon be laid. The hall committee is still optimistic that the hall renovations will be completed by Christmas or by early next year. Bookings for the hall are not yet open, but the committee is happy to receive expressions of interest from people and organisations interested in using the hall in 2018. The CMHA’s new webpage can be found at www.cooroyhall.org.au

ROAD safety improvements at the Cooroy Connection Road (Myall Street) and Tulip Street intersection in Cooroy will start soon. Transport and Main Roads District Director for North Coast District Leah McKenzie said motorists turning right into Tulip Street from Myall Street would benefit from a new dedicated right-turn lane, improving traffic flow through the intersection. “Improving motorist safety at this intersection was given significant consideration, and the upgrades will reduce the risk of rear-end type crashes along Myall Street,” Ms McKenzie said. “These improvements will greatly benefit the local community, especially given the access Tulip Street provides to many residents and Noosa District High School. “Motorists travelling along Myall Street should notice improved traffic flow near the intersection, especially during school pickup and drop off times.” The project is funded under the State Government’s Safer Roads Sooner program which aims to improve road safety and focus on implementing high-benefit, cost-effective solutions to prevent crashes and incidents on Queensland roads. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Bendigo is banking on a bright future to that in September by being ranked number 13 in the Fortune global ‘Change the World’ Top 100 list and the best of the Australian corporates. “Why do we do it?” Mr. Cooper asked. “Because it’s through our customers’ banking that we generate profits that go into supporting our community. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing and changing with our community. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order,” he said. On top of all that, SCCFSL’s 800 shareholders will now receive their ninth dividend in as many years. They will now each receive a share of the $110,775.47 total dividend, based on 6.50 cents per $1.00 share of 1,704,238 shares. The dividend, which is to be paid on December 20 will be fully franked. “Receiving another nice dividend payment is fantastic for company’s investors,” Mr Cooper said. “This latest result is a culmination of a lot of hard work and local support from our communities. We believe it’s that community connection that sets us apart in the eyes of our customers and, as we continue to say, bank with us and everybody benefits. Local sponsorships for 2017 number more than 50, with notable ones including: Noosa Alive!, a $50,000 donation to help save Cooroy’s Memorial Hall and School of Arts, Coastguard Noosa and Noosa Country Show. “Whether it’s in Cooroy or Pomona with Geoff Edwards and his team, or in Tewantin with John Hague, Kerri Wright and their team we offer a full range of products and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most – right here in Noosa,” Mr. Cooper concluded.

Shareholders will receive their 9th dividend WHILE other banks in Noosa and the hinterland continue with their operational reviews, the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank remains as committed today as it was 15 years ago. Having celebrated their milestone on November 15 by walking around Cooroy sharing birthday cupcakes with all the local businesses, it gave the town a chance to see how quickly time has flown in the last 15 years.

The Cooroy Community Bank Branch was opened by Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) in 2002. This was followed by the Tewantin and Marcoola Community Bank Branches in 2004. The Pomona agency opened in 2015, then as a full service branch this April. Chairman of SCCFSL, Rick Cooper said the all the branches continue to

give their communities a real say in their financial future. “We’re close, not closed!” Mr. Cooper enthused. “With more than $183 million now returned to communities nationwide, our customers realise the difference their banking makes right where they live. Bendigo Bank is now Australia’s fifth largest full service retail bank, servic-

Since 2008, the Cooroy, Tewantin and Pomona Community Bank branches have returned more than $1.4 million into Noosa’s local schools, clubs, organisations and events, and they’re just getting started. “We’re here because the people of Tewantin, Cooroy and Pomona said they wanted their own banks. “Our shareholders and customers love us because we’re also a full-service bank. Our branches provide excellent individual customer service as well as business banking of any size. “Bendigo Bank lives by the principal of feeding into the prosperity of Noosa, not from it,” Mr. Cooper stated. A FEW months ago Cathy Breed saw a post on fb from Share the Dignity about a campaign they do at Christmas time called “It’s in the Bag” “The idea is you put together a ladies handbag, it has to have 7 essential items in it. Toothbrush and toothpaste, sanitary Items, shampoo and conditioner, soap and deoderant. After that you can put in anything you like, gifts like jewellery, nail polish, lipstick. Even things like scarves and socks. The foundation then takes the bags and gives them to women, homeless women, women in shelters escaping domestic violence, needy woman,” says Cathy. “Well I am so proud to say that with the help of my ladies at Steppin’ In Line, their friends and family and some special Cooroy community members (you know who you are) we have put together and delivered 60 handbags to give to some of those woman to help them have a better Christmas. “All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you! You are all amazing, loving and generous people. Thank you for always supporting me and my ideas. A special thank you to Lindy who took on the role of co ordinating and making sure each bag had everything in it that it needed to. I couldn’t have done it without you.” Cathy is hoping to make next year even bigger so if anyone has pre-loved handbags (in good condition) that they would like to donate, or items to go into them please don’t hesitate to get in touch with her anytime on 0414 951 207. “Bring on 2018 and help us ‘Share the Dignity’”

Christmas made easier by planning ahead Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank Well, how amazing was Christmas in Cooroy this year? Our wonderful community event just seems to get better every year. It’s the tenth year our Cooroy Community Bank branch has been a major sponsor and we love being part of it all. It’s just another way we continue give back to our community as you support us through our Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin Bendigo Bank branches. Christmas is a wonderful time, spending time with family and friends and giving gifts to others. Many homes are bursting at the seams with food, family and friends. But Christmas can also be a stressful time for families. Especially given the ongoing economic climate means a lot of families may be unable to find those extra dollars to participate in the celebration of Christmas. One way to plan ahead for the extra financial pressure it brings is to open up a Christmas Club account with us. A Christmas Club account is typically an interest bearing passbook account with no or low fees, that you are able to deposit into during the year but can’t withdraw from until a set period. This set withdrawal period is usually November 1 to January 31, so you catch those post-Christmas sales. You can arrange a transfer from your savings account or even from your pay office into the Christmas Club account and that way it is like a forced savings. Set down a budget of how much you think you can put aside each pay day, it does not have to be large, but it does have to be a realistic amount because if you need to withdraw the funds a penalty fee will be applied to the account. Why not ask us about setting up a Christmas Club account and start early for next year’s

celebrations? As many locals are now realising, we’re a fullservice bank and here for the long haul. We’re close, not closed! More importantly, it’s through our customers’ banking that we generate profits supporting our community - more than $700,000 so far. It’s why we want to give the hinterland a real say in its future and it’s why we believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. So as you prepare for your Christmas, bank where the customer is relevant and connected to its community, and give us a try. If it’s about opening a Christmas Club account or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact our team on 5447 7131 or me on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. CHRISTMAS should be full of laughter and good cheer, and if you plan wisely, you can also avoid a spartan New Year spent paying off your yuletide spending. With a survey finding that Australian shoppers spend about $10 billion on gifts alone, or $700 per person, by the time you also add in the costs of decorating, catering and Christmas travel, Christmas can become very expensive, very fast.

But it doesn’t have to be a strain on your hip pocket. Here’s five tips to help you keep your Christmas spending under control. 1. Set a budget Firstly, you need to understand how much you can afford to spend, so if you don’t have a budget in place for all of your usual expenses, our budget planner calculator can guide you through the process of setting one up. Once you understand your financial position, you can estimate the total amount you can afford to – or want to – spend at Christmas. Next, create a Christmas budget based on spending categories such as gifts, entertainment, catering and travel, and allocate money to each one. Remember to allow for the season’s parties, events and social occasions, and the extra costs these can entail, such as taxis and incidental gifts. 2. Start planning early Check out our savings account options as saving throughout the year is a great way to make Christmas more affordable. With its pay, save and spend buckets, the AMP

Better account can help you to do just that, and you can automate your account to save a little from each pay until you reach your savings goal. When it comes to Christmas, the earlier you start saving – and planning – the better. Some people use the Boxing Day sales to stock up for the following Christmas. This may seem extreme, but the thinking behind it is great. Taking advantage of sales periods during the year and stockpiling gifts can help you make your money go further and spread the cost of Christmas throughout the year. It’s not too late to take advantage of this strategy for this Christmas, by stocking up during sales periods between now and December 25. 3. Organise your giving Gift-giving can be expensive, especially if you have a large family in which everyone expects a present. Some strategies you could look to adopt to keep spending on gifts under control include agreeing a spending cap per person amongst your family members, or using a system where everyone buys

for just one person, rather than the whole group, known as a Kris Kringle or Secret Santa. And remember that not all gifts need be expensive. Handmade items or vouchers for massages, homecooked meals, gardening, or home repair work are both thoughtful and costeffective. 4. Share the costs Eating a special meal with friends and relatives is a Christmas ritual for many people, but it can be an expensive one. Some ways to make the Christmas meal more affordable include rotating the hosting duties (and the cost) between extended family members each year, buying items in bulk, asking each guest to bring a dish or drink, or getting your guests to chip in some money towards the cost of the meal. And don’t forget to use up any leftovers! 5. Use cash Research has found a link between the way we pay for purchases and how much we spend, so to reduce the risk of blowing your budget, use cash. By withdrawing the amount you’ve got to spend at the

start of your shopping trip you’ll be able to easily keep track of how much you’ve spent and know when your money’s run out. And to avoid the temptation of overspending or spending money you don’t have, leave the credit cards firmly in your wallet – or if necessary – at home. And finally… Above all, Christmas is about enjoying a break and celebrating with family, not about how much you spend. Remember the true spirit of Christmas, relax and enjoy! *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004, trading as Provision Wealth Management, are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. The Spirit of the Australian Light Horse is alive and well LONG-term Cooroy local Chad Monroe, along with 175 members of the Australian Light Horse Association recently returned from a tour retracing the steps of the original Light Horsemen travelling throughout the Middle East and Holy Lands and culminating in a threeday march on horseback across the Negev Desert in Israel. Exactly 100 years to the day after Australian Light Horsemen broke through the Ottoman defensive line in a brave mounted charge, Aussies and Kiwi’s once again rode across the now hallowed grounds on horseback. With leaders from Israel, Australia and New Zealand all in attendance, close to 100 horsemen paraded through the streets of Be’er Sheva, Israel to commemorate the important Battle of Beersheba that helped turn the tide of world war one and shape the modern nation of Israel. “Many Australians understand Gallipoli and many have even made the journey to Anzac Cove for themselves. “I believe Israel’s Anzac history surpasses that of Turkey’s, and it includes amazing victories such as

Anzac Cove Sphinx Group PS the Light Horse charge at Beersheba, which I don’t think is as readily known,” Chad said. “I chose to be involved in commemorations such as this to bring history to life! Keeping the spirit of the ANZAC’s alive and ensuring that we, together with future generations, never forget what they accomplished is so important. “The highlight for me was

to ride in the parade as a flag bearer and hear the Israeli’s shout “Todah Rabah” which means Thank You very much,” Chad said. “We saw here in Beersheba 800 mounted infantry go against 4,000 embedded Turks with machine guns, with bunkers, the few ones against the many. We learned about the ethos of courage of

Australian and New Zealand’s soldiers. It was an example of the spirit of fortitude and courage and the willingness to act in the defense of our people and our values,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “They spurred their horses through that fire, those mad Australians, through that fire, and took the town of Beersheba, se-

cured the victory that did not create the State of Israel but enabled its creation,” said Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. For the Australians, the Battle of Beersheba is iconic of “the spirit of the Australian people,” said Kelvin Crombie, historian and one of the organizers of the 100th anniversary commemo-

rations, “Daring, bold and courageous. Having suffered crushing defeats at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, it’s remembered as the young nation’s first real victory.” On the 31 st October 1917, at around the same time the charge was happening Britain’s foreign minister, Lord Arthur Balfour, agreed to issue

a declaration calling for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” “Had the Ottoman rule in Palestine and Syria not been overthrown by the Australians and the New Zealanders, the Balfour Declaration would have been empty words, but this was a step for the creation of Israel,” Mr Crombie said.

COOROY RAG

IF you are concerned that your whole family is eating the very best diet they can, that the foods you serve are not packed with preservatives, additives and fillers, and you consider your pets a part of your family then pull into Cooroy’s new store, Sunlight Aquarium and Holistic Pet Products. As we have become more informed about our dietary choices and how they affect our health and wellbeing, so it applies to our pet’s diets, says Sunlight Holistic pet products owner, Paul Hentschel. Having been in the industry for over 15 years, Paul has seen the demand for quality foods for our pets rise dramatically, and he says some big brands available in supermarkets that purport to be quality, are usually still packed with wheat fillers. “Wheat usually gives dogs and cats skin irritations,” says Paul. “With Holistic Pet food customers have not only seen a remarkable change in their pet’s

overall health and shiny coats but also their temperaments. While most of us know additives and colourings in our children’s foods can affect their moods, we seldom translate that knowledge to what our pets are eating and how this affects their temperaments and behaviours. “My all Australian food brands suit any pet and their dietary needs, including overweight, unhealthy and older animals,” said Paul. By only stocking the most holistic, natural and organic products that mimic the natural diet of your animals, Paul has complete confidence in all the foods he stocks, so much so that he offers 100 % back guarantee if your pet doesn’t like it. He also has a large range of Australian made flea resistant, machine washable bedding, and conventional and natural flea and tick treatments. Sunlight Aquarium and Holistic Pet Products also stock a large range of Australian native and cold water fish, suitable for ponds and dams to help with mosquito control and beautiful Siamese Fighters that are a fabulous first time fish as there is no filter required and they are hardy and easy to look after. Mia Dyson has toured with the likes of Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and many more. A multiple ARIA and APRA awardwinning artist, Dyson was recently named one of Australia’s top 25 guitarists of all time. dining & entertainment Say Happy New Year with The Claptomaniacs The presents are given, the turkey/seafood’s eaten, the holidays start to kick in properly. Now ... what to do about New Year’s Eve? You don’t have to venture far in Cooroy if you want a really good time in seeing 2018 in, with great food, great drinks and great music! One of the Coast’s most popular cover bands is playing right here in Cooroy that night - at Club Cooroy/Cooroy RSL in Maple Street, from 7.30pm until late! The Claptomaniacs have played the club on a handful of occasions, and the five-piece band, two of whom live locally, see Cooroy RSL as ‘home turf’. “That makes playing Cooroy RSL more special to us -and playing New Year’s Eve makes it more special still,” band drummer and Lake Macdonald resident Alan Lander said. “The club approached us about this in late 2016, so it’s been a while in the making - and we’re very much looking forward to it, and hope you will join us

The Claptomaniacs there.” The Claptomaniacs cover a range of mostly wellknown classic material from the likes of Eric Clapton in all his guises, Joe Cocker, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs - with plenty more, including an always-popular Rolling Stones set. Their sound is professional and tight as a drum, and impossible not to dance to! The band is lucky to have Cooroy’s own Kenny Gamble as lead singer, being one of the finest voices on the Coast for this type of music.

“Close your eyes as Kenny sings Joe Cocker’s ‘Help From My Friends’ and you will believe you are hearing the original track!” Alan said. You may have also seen the band at the Cooroy Fusion Festival this year or in 2016. So don’t hesitate - book a table for New Year’s Eve at Club Cooroy/Cooroy RSL on 5447 6131, and be at the best show in town! You may also just pick up a handy, huge $4000 in the club’s ever-increasing cash draw - now wouldn’t be a fitting end to the year?

COOROY RAG police beat

Belli old time dance

with Sergeant Mal Scott

RECENT events in Cooroy and surrounding areas have seen a rise in unlawful use of motor vehicle offences and property related crime which includes break and enter, stealing, wilful damage and unlawful entry to motor vehicle offences. A significant proportion of these events have been linked to a group of youths aged between 14 and 17 years who have no regard for their victims and simply steal and commit crime for the thrill of it. Recent police actions have seen a number of these youths arrested and dealt with under the Youth Justice Act. It is timely to remind the community that Cooroy is not immune from crime and even though we do enjoy a much lower crime rate than other areas we must all take measures to protect ourselves from falling victim to these predators. Please lock your cars and houses when left unattended and when at home as offenders are increasingly turning to sneak type offences to enter dwellings while people are at home to steal car keys as vehicle ignition locking systems especially on later model cars are becoming more sophisticated and harder for the criminals to defeat by traditional hot wiring and forcing the vehicles ignition lock. As is usually the case, the Cooroy community has stepped up to the mark and are greatly assisting police with helping to solve these crimes by reporting suspicious behaviour and being ever vigilant.

Hot spots for these offences has seen increased criminal activity in the vicinity of Pearsons Dr, Dianella Court and also our Central Business District (CBD) so can I ask that persons living in or travelling through those areas please report any activity that you find suspicious. In another incident on the 17th of November, Cooroy Police were on patrol in the CBD looking for a stolen vehicle when the stolen car in question with false plates attached was seen parked up and due to quick action by police a 27 yr old male offender was quickly arrested and charged with multiple serious offences including burglary, unlawful vehicle entry, vehicle theft and evade police offences and is currently in custody awaiting court appearances. It is worthy of note that some of the victims of the crime in the above mentioned matters were very much effected by these crimes which had a dramatic influence over their lives. One victim, the owner of a stolen car, was actually using the car as her home and most of her earthly belongings were inside that car so to have that car stolen for a simple joy ride had a profound effect on her and effectively rendered her homeless. Due to information from the public and good work by Cooroy Police this vehicle was quickly located in Prospect Place, Cooroy with the child offenders arrested and has since been returned to the owner however much of the victim’s property remains outstanding. In another instance a local business

owner had her brand new cosmetics shop broken into and property vital to the business stolen. The owner of the business had not even commenced trading as her business was brand new so to have much of her shops equipment stolen was a devastating blow meaning she could not open. Luckily, much of her cosmetic equipment was located and the offenders charged during a search of premises by local police days later and was able to be returned to the victim albeit some had been damaged and some not located. I mention this just as a reminder of how simple crimes committed by criminals simply stealing out of greed and so called fun rather than out of necessity can have such a profound effect on the community. Comments such as, “They are stealing to eat and to survive” just don’t stack up given that the stolen property mentioned above is far from items vital to survival such as food, drink and money. Having said all of the above I hope I haven’t painted a dark cloud over Cooroy as my intent is just the opposite. This community that we have developed over the past 20 or 30 years continues to go from strength to strength and here in the hinterland we do enjoy a lower than average crime rate with good success in clearing these crimes due to the very proactive attitudes of the community and the willingness to partner with police to solve crime

and keep our community safe. It’s a fact that the majority of unlawful behaviours experienced in Cooroy in the recent past are committed by persons outside of our community who see Cooroy as an easy target so please continue to assist police with keeping our community safe by reporting suspicious behaviour. Our Safer Streets Program and the recently installed CCTV cameras have been a great success with numerous offences being solved due the use of this technology. Well done to Danielle and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for all the hard work in bringing this project to fruition. Also, it would be remiss of me not to thank the hundreds of people who sent me letters of support, get get well cards and social media comments after the incident at the beginning of the year where I was injured attempting to apprehend two offenders after they had broken into the Cooroy Mitre 10. There are too many to individually thank so just to let everyone know that I read every card, text, post and letter including the very special cards from the many kids who have grown up attending the Cooroy Blue Lights Discos that I have helped to run for the past 10 years. Every one of your well wishes and lovely comments was read by me and was very much appreciated and very much assisted me in making a speedy recovery back to work. Kind Regards, Sgt Mal Scott.

DESPITE the rain over the weekend, the annual Christmas in Cooroy event was another huge success with thousands of people partaking in the cornucopia of Christmas activities. Friday night kicked off with the official turning on of the beautiful Studio Steel Christmas tree. Grade 6 Cooroy State School student Anjali, who had a stroke earlier in the year had set herself a goal to be able to walk to do the official duty of turning on tree. The crowd were touched by her tenacity and cheered her on as she made the walk to the tree. The performance by the Four Corners Quartet added a lovely touch to the night and everyone enjoyed a bit of unseasonal snow as well! The QMP Shop Window Trail was also

launched on Friday night also with local businesses throughout town decorating their window. Visiting the windows is a great way to spend a few hours with the kids and you can also vote for your favourite window by 27 December to win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA Voucher. Lane Hoffman and Alex Blake were the winners of the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race which raised funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. It was a sight to see with about 30 competitors donned in Santa suits racing up the main street of Cooroy. Spectators lined the street for the ever-popular Bendigo Bank street parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard again. Over thirty businesses and community groups participated and the “Stories, Books & Authors” theme was a big hit with young and old alike. Tadpoles Childcare Centre took out the Best Float award with their Peter Pan inspired float but it was a close call with another year of tough competition according to judges Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Ingrid Jackson. “This event is such a brilliant show of community spirit, which is why Bendigo Bank are so happy to be major sponsors. It is just

wonderful to see the delight on everyone’s faces and the effort that people put into their floats,” said Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Manager, Geoff Edwards. The Shed at Cooroy West Side Traders team took back the title of Best Tuggers in the East versus West Tug of War! The Cooroy Computers team of West Side Traders gave a valiant effort but had to relinquish the trophy for another year. The free activities kept people entertained all evening with the free rides sponsored by Cooroy Rag Community Newspaper & Madills Motor Group, a foam party sponsored by Cooroy Legal Centre, the SPV accounting sponsored face painting, the Santa visit sponsored by Gelignite Jacks, the fantastic entertainment program sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA, free popcorn from the Leather Doctor, ice-creams from Fiona Winter Realty and of course the spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy RSL. “There is a long list of people to thank for this event including the sponsors, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Police and

our MCs Sandy Bolton and Richard Hansen, who all gave up copious amounts of time. It’s the fantastic community spirit that Cooroy has that makes this event so special,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. PLAYGROUPS? Kindergarten? Homeschooling? Primary school? Farm school? Farm and school? These were some of the considerations posed when a group of approximately 30 people attended a talk on Steiner education on Saturday morning in the Kandanga community hall. The interested group heard from two dynamic and inspirational speakers, Tim Nixon and Kylie Dean. Tim Nixon, 13 years a Steiner teacher, gave an overview of why Steiner primary education reaches children with varying intelligences (ie Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences) utilising story and the arts. His wife (also a teacher), Steiner homeschools their four children. His wealth of knowledge and experience was highly valued as he answered a wide variety of questions pertaining to Steiner/Waldorf education. Local Happiness Coach Kylie Dean has recently returned from America where she visited multiple Steiner inspired schools and ventures: a day/boarding farm school for senior students called High Mowing; a community of care supporting Ploughshare Farm in New Hampshire; and Hawthorne Valley, a farming community encompassing a Steiner/Waldorf kindergarten, primary and high school. Kylie was so enthused by what she saw and learned (she shared wonderful slides), that her vision for the Mary Valley is now substantial! Anyone interested in any of these Steiner inspired visions for the Mary Valley are encouraged to contact the steering group via jonathan@teachthechildrenwell.com.au or join the conversation on facebook @ https:// www.facebook.com/groups/162156817707443/ This was the second community meeting. A third will take place in a few weeks, followed by others in the new year.

EACH year the festive season poses a challenge to sustaining your health. You may give in to cravings for sugary treats, rich food and alcohol – waking up in the New Year with a ‘metabolic hangover’ of weight gain and fatigue caused by erratic blood glucose (sugar) levels. However, the holiday period doesn’t mean your health has to come undone providing you put in place some simple strategies, including balancing your blood sugar and insulin levels. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Blood Glucose vs. Insulin: Following each meal your body releases insulin in response to rising blood glucose levels. Insulin is like a key that unlocks your cells so glucose can get inside and be used for energy. However, for some people, too many sugary treats and starchy carbohydrates for too long can affect this ‘lock and key’ mechanism. This leads to poor uptake of glucose into the cell which is called ‘insulin resistance’. Fatigue, weight gain, and worsening of cravings are common as your cells keep seeking energy even though you are eating regularly. Curb those Cravings: Nature has solutions to help improve insulin sensitivity and assist your body to burn its ‘fuel’ more efficiently. For example, cocoa contains compounds called polyphenols that at therapeutic levels help your cells switch from burning carbohydrates to burning more fats for fuel. Not only does that create much-needed energy but can help you lose those extra kilos in the process! In addition, the herb gymnema is used to quell sugar cravings,

whilst cinnamon enhances your body’s glucose metabolism. The nutrient chromium also helps reduce carbohydrate cravings, whilst magnesium rapidly improves your cells’ sensitivity to insulin, further helping to raise energy levels. Including these herbs and nutrients can help you control your cravings, burn more fat and increase your energy levels as your cells receive the fuel they require. Don’t Ditch the Exercise: It’s tempting to leave exercise on the back burner during the holiday season but maintaining exercise is like buying an insurance policy against those dietary slip-ups. Exercise itself is a rapid and effective means of regulating blood sugar levels, whilst maintaining a healthy muscle mass helps you burn fats more efficiently. Exercise also benefits your gut microbiota by promoting diversity amongst the beneficial bacterial strains, which is associated with improved insulin sensitivity. Have your Cake and Eat It (Just a Small Piece!) The advent of the silly season doesn’t mean you have to ‘fall off the wagon’ when it comes to your health. Reigning in cravings and balancing blood sugar levels are the key to remaining in control and not overindulging. For further advice speak to a qualified practitioner about strategies to support you and your ongoing health now and into the New Year. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Students raise funds and heart rates! KENILWORTH Community College students have raised $2,820.97 and Noosa Christian College $9507.45 for their schools after hosting a CUA School Fun Runs. In the lead-up to the event, students pounded the pavement and raised funds online by seeking sponsorship from their local community. Healthy Harold and his van roll into Cooroy HEALTHY Harold the giraffe, who is synonymous with the Life Education van and program made his annual visit to Cooroy State School this week. Providing our kids with health and drug education, Life Education began 38 years ago and has helped more than five million young Australians make healthy and safe choices. The program teaches children ways to keep their bodies healthy and to equip them with the skills to make appropriate choices and a

way of learning to stay secure in potentially unsafe situations. It remains a not-forprofit organisation, which operates in close partnership with our local schools and communities and relies on student fees and local community funding to meet costs and that’s where Bendigo Bank has helped to subsidize the program. Life Education educator, Niki Andrinopoulos said she loves welcoming our local school kids to the high-tech mobile classroom. “A lot of hard work went into raising the funds to buy our Life Education van and we can’t thank our sponsors enough for their ongoing support,” Niki said. “Bendigo Bank know the importance of the Life Ed program and as many know, continue to support the project. In fact, ongoing annual funding plus the majority of the purchase price of the van has come from our local Community Banks. Without their support the program could not be subsidised and we wouldn’t be able to educate so many children in the region,” she said. As a primary school teacher of 30 years, Niki will have traveled to more than 20 schools from Gympie to Coolum by the end of 2017 and around 8,000 children have accessed the program. nings with very little backing the program is now seen as an essential component of every child’s education. “Having the van means children in our region now have access to the Life Education program. In the younger grades, we aim to teach children about their body and how it works. The aim of our senior classes is to help students develop a sound understanding of their body and well-being so they understand how special and truly unique they are. This week, we focused on the dangers of cyber-bully-

ing,” Niki added. Last week, Niki was joined by Geoff Edwards for a photo along with Luke Coyle and his

Year 3 class. Life Education classes also provide a free parent information session for each school.

Chronic disease management MAPLE Street Surgery has been servicing the Hinterland community for over 35 years, and is now a part of the Cooroy landscape. We continue to be a proud supporter of local businesses and clubs as we have always believed it’s important to give back to the local community. Like all businesses with multiple staff, the practice has seen it’s share of changes over the years, but remains constant in providing high quality health care to their patients and the Hinterland community in general. Preventative health care is one key area that the staff at Maple Street Surgery are passionate about. Health clinics are available for anyone with a chronic illness, like diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cardio-vascular disease, or high blood pressure. Additionally, age specific health clinics are available for people aged 45-49 years and 75 years and over. “It’s essential to be educated about your chronic disease. This helps you manage it, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We encourage the Hinterland community to take advantage of these various health clinics as that’s why we are here – to help people”.

“Managing a condition like diabetes for example, requires dedication and the support of your doctor. We strongly urge anyone with concerns or questions to give us a call – questions are free here at Maple Street Surgery”. The practice runs health clinics on a weekly basis as necessary to meet the demands of the local community. The treatment and prevention of chronic disease is one of Australia’s biggest health issues, and it should not be ignored, particularly as we get older. Maple Street Surgery has always had a strong focus on helping patients with a Chronic disease by preventing it with early diagnosis, and healthy lifestyle guidance. It’s important, for your health, to get help if you feel you may need it, and the earlier the better. Maple Street Surgery now has seven doctors (3 male and 4 female) to help patients in the local community. Make an appointment today if you think something is ‘not quite right’ with your heath. You can also have a confidential chat with one of their registered nurses. 46 Maple Street, Cooroy .. Phone 5447 6644

Hospice Op Shop reopens

Page 20 - Cooroy Rag, December 6, 2017

THE Sunshine Hospice Op Shop has re-opened in Maple Lane following a month-long refurbishment. The shop features a bright yellow wall which represents the charity’s corporate colour and white walls, shelving and display cabinets. This fresh new look and bali flags at the front door greet customers eager to snap up a bargain. Opening day was overwhelming successful and the positive comments from shoppers since then has been exceptionally encouraging. The range of quality pre-loved goods offered for sale includes furniture, women’s and men’s wear, handbags, jewellery, homewares, linen, bric a brac, books and DVDs. The shop is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm and we invite the community to pop in and say hello. Sunshine Hospice CEO, Sue Mason-Baker said that the “Cooroy Shop is one of four Op Shops operated by our charity to raise funds to build and operate a purpose-built hospice on the Sunshine Coast and support from the community is vital to ensure this is achieved. We are delighted with the positive response from the community and it is lovely to see our regular customers again.”

Sunshine Hospice was established in 2008 to provide specialised care to the terminally ill on the Sunshine Coast. It operated a six-bed hospice facility in Doonan for five years, caring for over 350 patients and their families. Receiving no government funding and relying only on donations, bequests, fundraising and revenue from the Op Shops, the facility was closed in December 2015 and the business restructured. Since that time, the charity has been growing cash reserves to build a facility which is private hospital licensed and accredited, thereby giving access to funding from private health funds, Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the State Government. This platform of funding, along with fundraising and Op Shop revenue will provide a financially sustainable model of care ensuring a hospice is available to the residents of the Sunshine Coast. The shop is looking for additional volunteers and encourages community members who have a spare half day (9.00am to 12.30pm) or full day (9.00am to 4.00pm) and wish to contribute to this worthwhile cause, to call into the shop or ring the Admin Office on 5479 0881.

health Cracked heels and what you can do about them?

COOROY RAG

CRACKED heels, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot problem experienced by many people. In most cases the problem is merely a nuisance and unattractive to look at; however, when the cracks or fissures become deep, standing, walking or any pressure placed on the heel can become quite painful. When the skin becomes too dry, or thickens due to friction forming calluses, the skin on the heels loses its suppleness and elasticity. Cracks will form when the skin is just too dry to support the immense pressure on the feet. The skin expands as the feet take full body weight when walking, if it is supple enough. If not, the dry or calloused skin just splits. Occasionally these splits may bleed and be open to infection. They are always painful, sometimes extremely so! Fortunately, you can easily help people with their cracked heels ... put the moisture back into the skin - moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Causes of cracked heels: Dry thickened skin (corns and calluses) around the rim of the heel is the very first step towards cracked heels. Increased pressure (such as walking or standing) on the fat pad under the heel causes it to expand sideways, leading to splitting or cracking of the callous. Some factors that contribute towards the callus cracking or splitting include: Excessive weight or obesity, pregnancy – any extra weight puts extra pressure onto the heel skin ; prolonged standing, especially on hard floors; Open-back shoes and sandals, as they provide no support to hold the fat pad under the foot, and allow the skin to dry out easily; Genetics – some people have thick callused skin that does not split, and some have skin that is less elastic – skin elasticity is dependent upon the amount of collagen and other proteins that make up skin, which varies over our lifetime and is determined by our own DNA; Low humidity and other factors that dry the skin – e.g. air conditioning, sun exposure, soaps. Treatment of cracked heels: Moisturise - The

best form of treatment for cracked heels is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. For those people who have suffered with cracked heels (especially diabetics), feet should be inspected daily and on the first sign of any cracking, a moisturising routine 2-3 times a day may be all that is needed to heal the skin. Rich, heavy, greasy moisturising creams and ointments are the best to use, such as those with lanolin, as they add and retain more moisture in the skin than light creams do. Special heel balms are available that contain water-retaining (humectant) agents, such as urea and lactic acid. Urea and lanolin are both ingredients in Scholls’ Eulactol heel balm. Urea and lactic acid are both in Calmurid cream. Low levels of urea in the skin leads to dryness, so adding more than usual extra urea will maintain a higher than usual level of water in the skin. When heel cracks are present, using these specialised but simple moisturisers two or three times a day will quickly relieve discomfort, allow healing, and make the cracks disappear. Generally, once cracks have cleared, moisturising daily after a bath or shower is enough to prevent future drying and cracking of the skin. Using a heel balm in the morning is very important as it increases the elasticity of the skin before the daily activity starts, which will minimise cracking. Vaseline is useful, due to its’ greasiness, under socks at night time, although may be a bit slippery next morning. Remove dry and thickened skin, if present. If there are areas of thickened skin, such as calluses, removal of this skin will allow the moisturiser to penetrate better, and work better and faster. In severe cases (or in diabetics), having a podiatrist look after areas of dry or thickened skin is sensible to minimise the risk of skin damage and maximize the speed of healing from the cracks. Avoid soaps that may dry the skin out further Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Add insoles or heel pads to shoes, as they may

help redistribute weight and prevent the fat pad in the heel from spreading too far sideways. If the fissures are very deep or there is any sign of bleeding, treat the cracks like a normal wound and add antiseptic and a dressing over the top to minimise infection and accelerate healing. Wear closed in, well-fitting shoes when possible. For severely cracked heels that do not respond with “self-treatment” after a week, a visit to a podiatrist may be sensible. They will carefully remove excess dry skin, which will allow better penetration of foot skin moisturisers. Jaqueline Meyer - Livelife Pharmacy

Keeping in Touch THE weather was kind for the Junior Touch Football summer season finals. A warm and sunny afternoon led to an afternoon of top notch junior action. The U10’s began the proceedings with Ball Girls and Piranhas entertaining in a tight tussle. With many of the Ball Girls playing in their first season they showed great determination in pushing the more experienced Piranhas for the entire match. The Piranhas held on to take the result by a couple of touchdowns. Fast and Furious lived up to their name against the Touch Nuts, showing their attacking flair. Touch Nuts never gave up and will be back bigger and better next year. The final between the Colour Bombs (girls) and Pirates (boys) turned into an absolute heart stopper. After an outstanding match with end to end action, the score was dead locked at the fulltime siren sending the game into a dreaded drop-off to determine the winner. The hill and side line were packed with supporters and spectators to watch the excitement. Most of these

Lachlan Britten with the ball in the U10’s young players had never seen a drop-off before let alone participated in one and all the players should be proud of how they played. The Colour Bombs had first use of the Steeden and scored a team touchdown in the corner in the first set of six. The Pirates had one set to level the score, but the girls successfully held them out to take the honours. Player of the Season, an award judged for players showing not only playing ability but great sportsmanship towards team mates, opposition and officials, was awarded to Lily Geary and Atticus Richter. The U12 division saw

two finals played, both at great pace and with great skill on show by all teams and players. The ‘A’ final saw the Daredevil girls against the Noosaville boys. This match was touchdown for touchdown for most of the match with Noosaville holding on to take the trophy by a couple of touchdowns in the end. In a game that was affected by the lack of player availability the Banana Splits had a tough match up against a combined team of Mad Dogs and Diamonds. Whilst the Mad Dog/ Diamonds combination proved to be successful on the day, which was impressive from these

players for working together for the first time, Banana Splits were named the winners. Dakota Pohlner and Josh Palmer were worthy recipients for the Player of the Season honours. SBSHS and NDSHS played in the U14/16 girls final. This was always going to be a tough defensive ask for the younger Noosa girls up against the more experienced Sunshine girls. SBSHS put on a magnificent attacking display and thoroughly deserved the win on the day. The ‘B’ grade U14/ 16 boys final saw NDSHS successful against the Barbarians. The Noosa boys kept their cool and were eventual winners in a game that was played with an outstanding attitude and terrific spirit. A nail biter ended the afternoon in the U14/16 boys ‘A’ final between Bankers and SBSHS. Only one touchdown proved to be the difference as the final whistle blew with SBSHS taking the title. Both teams put on a captivating display and entertained their supporters. Monique Robinson and Ben Anderson were

named as Players of the Season. Noosa Touch recognises all the junior referees and would like to thank every one of them for their continued time and effort every week. Refereeing can, at times, be a tough job but can also be very rewarding. Without these youngsters making themselves available every week games would not be able to be played. Junior Referee Encouragement awards were presented to Cooper Lea and Ben Anderson and the Junior Referees of the Season were Grace Kennedy and Curtis Dean. Harrison Lea was named as Junior MVP for his time, effort and dedication both on and off the field as a player, referee and junior referee coordinator. Final thanks to the entire touch family, players, referees, coaches, managers and supporters. Another successful year and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year. Keep an eye out for sign on dates on our website and Facebook page. Until the next touchdown!

COOROY Golf Club hosted the Men District Inter Zone Championship on November 21. Glasshouse Mountains, Burnett & Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast made up the zones that fought for bragging rights for the next 12 months. The players not only had to contend with the course, but the miserable wet conditions. Luckily after an hour of play the sun broke through which put smiles on the players faces. The results at the end of the day was Sunshine Coast bursting through to take first place. Graeme Finn was gracious in accepting the trophy. Many thanks to the Cooroy Ladies with their help with registration, also a thanks to Wayne and Staff for their help and support.

RESIDENTS can start planning their Queen’s Baton Relay festivities with the release of local route information and community event details. The Baton will arrive in Noosa on March 26 next year, ahead of the XXI Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. It will depart Tewantin’s Read Park at 3.42pm and follow a seven-kilometre course through Tewantin, along the river’s edge and on to Noosa Parade toward Hastings Street. From Hastings Street, the baton will travel along Main Beach to reach its final destination, Noosa Heads Surf Club, at 5.30pm. More than 30 local residents will carry the baton, including several excited Cooroy residents. Council will host two community celebrations on the day – a Come ‘n’ Try Sports Afternoon for schoolchildren from 12.30pm at Read Park, plus an afternoon celebration with live music and other entertainment at Noosa Heads Surf Club from 4.30pm. Chair of the local Queen’s Baton Relay Working Group, Councillor Joe Jurisevic, encouraged the community to get involved in the festivities. “There’ll be plenty of spots for residents to catch a glimpse of the baton and cheer on our local batonbearers as they complete the journey,” Cr Jurisevic said. “The baton will change hands more than 3000 times as it makes its way around Australia, having shared the Commonwealth Games dream with more than a third of the world’s population before reaching Australian shores. “I encourage locals to join the community

Cooroy’s Yvonne Pattinson will be one of the Baton holders celebrations and be a part of history.” From Christmas, through January, thousands of Australians will get to see the Queen’s Baton at popular summertime events, iconic locations and children’s hospitals around the country. Dragons in tip-top shape for 2018 THE Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club based in Eumundi is well on the way to another successful season in 2018 with the announcement that they have already seen an increase in the number of sponsors who have signed up to give financial support to the club next year. A proud sponsor since 2013 Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank manager Geoff Edwards said; “ I look forward to the 2018 season and again being part of a great Club and mixing it with the Club’s members”, Adding; “For five seasons we’ve watched the club and its teams grow and strengthen. Our support is made possible through our customers, as we exist because locals said they wanted their own bank. “Now there are three Bendigo Bank branches in Noosa – Cooroy, Tewantin and Pomona all living by the principal of feeding into the prosperity of Noosa, not from it. “As that continues, so too will the opportunity to invest the profits we generate in our community. It’s special to come

to pre-season Dragons’ training and end of season presentations and seeing the jerseys with our logo on it. “It’s the end result of a community working together. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank - in that order. Each year, we support more than 50 local com-

munity groups, clubs, sporting teams and schools and our team is delighted to count Eumundi Dragons as one of those. “May the kids continue to love their rugby and all that comes with it with this great family club.” “Without the support of these local businesses and organisa-

tions our fantastic little club would not be able to continue to provide such an enjoyable and fulfilling sporting experience for the young players who continue to be our members and those we hope will join us in 2018 “, said club president Doug Toms. “With still a couple of months till the start of next year’s season the

club is still on the lookout for more sponsors whose brand / logo will be proudly displayed on club uniforms, on websites and Facebook , in club bulletins and on home ground billboards. Building partnerships with the local community is one of the main aims or points of focus for our club as we go from strength to strength”.
