Family of Champions THE Sunshine Coast Sportstar of the Year for 2013 was recently held at Palmer Coolum Resort. The event recognises the current sporting achievements of athletes on the coast. These athletes are community role models who have excelled in their chosen sport. It also recognises the contribution of volunteers who give of their time to support these athletes. It was a special night for World Champion swimmer Clinton Stanley, who recently was inducted into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame. He was given this honour for the second time in front of the 500 people who attended the Sports Awards night. Cooroy’s own “Super Fish” Clinton has represented Australia seven times and broken 79 Down syndrome world records over various strokes and distances. He was one of the 2013 Australian of the Year Queensland finalists and an award recipient for Lifesaving. His Mum Sue was selected as one of the four finalists for the 2013 Bendigo Bank Volunteer of the Year Award. Sue was announced the winner of this award on the night. Her 22 years as a volunteer in the field of disability sport is a testimony of her passion and commitment. Sue worked tirelessly for Clinton Special Olympics Queensland as a coach and administrator for many years. She started the tennis programs for Special Olympic athletes on the coast. In her speech at the awards night she spoke of how proud she was to take the first Special Olympic tennis team in 1998 to Nationals in Tasmania. Sue also was the founder of the Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation in 2005. This has given many swimmers with Down syndrome the opportunity to swim competitively against other athletes at all levels and has provided a pathway to local, national and international competition. Sue has taken many teams away to represent Australia and since 2008 Team Australia have returned home from World Swimming Championships as the

and Sue Stanley with Cr Bob Abbot “World Champion Team”. In her thank you speech Sue said: There is nothing more rewarding than being able to help someone, especially someone with a disability achieve at their chosen sport. Whether it be at State, National or by representing their country. The highlight of the night for both Clinton and Sue was having Bob Abbot, the new Deputy Mayor of Noosa, attend the awards. Bob has always supported athletes with a disability and like Sue has seen some amazing achievements in their sports. Sue would like to thank the community of Cooroy and the generous people for all their support with fundraising over the many years.

Telstra – missing in action High Quality Work at very Affordable Prices

I am normally a patient man – at least that’s my reputation, But one thing that makes me cranky, is loss of communication, And when Telstra went off the air, about a week without a phone, I felt somewhat vexed, and I wasn’t on my own. People without mobiles, felt extremely isolated, And as the days went on, got more and more frustrated, “Area Outage” is the technical term, in these cases Telstra use, but “Area Outrage” is more likely, the one the sufferers choose.

The girls from Manila who spoke to me, were not of much assistance, Their apologies, however, were models of polite persistence, They kept telling me, repeatedly, I’d soon be back on air, But I decided to revive my wartime skills in semaphore and prayer. Scientists can put a satellite, millions of miles into space, Talk to it, control it, as though they were face to face, And that’s just day-to-day stuff, not a difficult load, But I couldn’t phone my neighbour, two houses down the road!! My mobile needed a recharge, to get me back on air, So I went to the Telstra shop, expecting some service there, A Telstra gentleman said “We can help, but you will have to wait, About two hours, or near it, is the time I estimate”. “That’s ridiculous” I exploded, “it may not seem long to you”, “I’m 95, and could die of old age, just waiting in the queue!!” So home I drove, most disgruntled, and went to a local store, Who courteously looked after me, in five minutes, no more. I don’t like criticising Telstra, their job can be pretty tough, But to be so long without a phone, is not really good enough, And remember that the customer, may give up in despair, And take his custom and his money, and spend it happily elsewhere. Carlee ecstatic with scholarship win

University scholarship winner Carlee Darben is congratulated by NDSHS Principal, Chris Roff (left) and Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards

FORMER Noosa District State High School student, Carlee Darben can’t wipe the smile off her face this week. The Cooroy local is headed to Queensland University of Technology in a few weeks with a scholarship in one hand and a train ticket in the other.

Carlee was one of several impressive applicants in the Cooroy Community Bank branch scholarship program and will now use the funds to work her way through her three year degree. Carlee’s studies will see her commence a Bachelor of Business majoring in Public

Relations on February 25 and will head down to Brisbane each day on the train from Nambour. “It’s going to be a great adventure and I’m very excited about the year ahead,” Carlee said. “I’m so thankful our local Cooroy Community Bank branch has given me this opportunity and for all this means to me, my family and my future. I’ve been dreaming of studying public relations for the past few years and I hope one day to put my degree to good use on the corporate side of PR,” she added. Manager of the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Geoff Edwards said the process of choosing the successful applicant was a really satisfying process. “Having our Community Bank branch provide support to Carlee to further her tertiary education is part of our commitment to building a stronger

community. “The idea behind the scholarship is to assist one regional or rural student per year from Noosa District High School who planned attending university for the first time in 2014. Carlee is the second recipient of the annual scholarship and because of the high costs associated with living away, we knew many applicants would need financial assistance to help their dreams come true,” Geoff said. “Carlee was the best applicant in a very strong field of finalists and she’s a very impressive young lady. We’re proud to award her with this scholarship and wish her well in his first steps towards what looks like a really bright future,” he added. Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) Principal, Chris Roff is also delighted Carlee will be financially supported thanks to the generosity of the bank. “We’re thrilled to be

chosen as the school who will give a student the opportunity to receive financial support while taking their dreams to the next level. It will be such a great start for Carlee, who was an excellent student at NDSHS and a very positive role model. We are proud to have had her as a student and she has already begun to make the best of her opportunities. We’re also very happy to strengthen our relationship with the Cooroy Community Bank branch - it’s a great initiative,” Chris said. The Cooroy Community Bank Scholarship will support Carlee with study related costs for the next two years at $5,000 per year, and she says she can’t wait to get started. “The chance to work hard and study what I love is a pretty amazing thing. It’s all ahead of of me and I’m looking forward to seeing where my degree will take me,” Carlee concluded.

Wanted - Big Biosphere ideas IF you have some big ideas on the future of Noosa and our Biosphere Reserve, the new Noosa Council wants to hear from you. At a recent meeting, Noosa Council decided it wanted to take a fresh look at what the Biosphere Reserve status means for Noosa and how it should be managed to involve the community even more. Part of the review will

involve community consultation, including the views of the current Noosa Biosphere Board and the Community Sector Boards. But Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot says the council working group doesn’t just want to hear from those currently involved. “We want to hear from people who have a big picture of the way we should be living and working in our en-

vironment, and then we want to hear some smart ideas about how all of that should be managed.” Councillor Abbot says the big challenge of managing the Noosa Biosphere Reserve is finding ways to involve the community more at all levels, and in helping everyone understand that “the Biosphere isn’t just about the environment, it’s about

how we live, work and function within it.” “We need to agree on the vision first” he says “and then we’ll look at the structure that can help get us there.” Noosa was awarded UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2007, and is run by a councilowned company, Noosa Biosphere Limited, with a governing board and a number of community sector boards.

Mr Abbot says the new Noosa Council was elected on a platform of community participation, and this is the right time to take stock of what the Biosphere Reserve actually means for our community. People or groups who want to make a submission should do so in writing to the council’s Chief Executive Officer by Monday the 24th of February.

A COMEDIC drama on cyber bullying created by Noosa students and published by Noosa Councillor Frank Wilkie aims to shed light on the dark side of modern adolescence. “Statistics suggest that if your child has a mobile phone and access to social media, then it’s likely they’ve initiated, witnessed or been the target of cyber bullying and that you will never know,” Mr Wilkie said. “Modern technology is brilliant. However, it’s 24-7, all-encompassing potential has also extended the reach of pack-mentality bullying, often to a lethal degree.” The book follows news the rate of suicide for Queensland children aged 10-17, already the highest in the nation, has increased since 2004. “Suicide was the main cause of death for 1014 year olds in Queensland in 2012-2013. At least one Sunshine Coast student took their own life at school in 2013 reportedly after

being cyber bullied. It’s nothing most of us will hear about.” The students wrote the scripts late last year in a process facilitated by Wilkie, who is also a playwright, journalist and high school teacher. “There were no scripts available on the rise of cyber bullying, so I thought ‘right, we’ll create one.’ I would love to see the students’ work performed in other schools across Queensland. The six plays linked by a narration deliver a graphic insight into the who, what, how and why teens do what they do. None of the scripts includes teens sharing their pain with parents. “This is a stage play about teens, written by teens and a revelation for any parent who wants to understand shadow side of the world our children are growing up in.” “For the 13-16 year old, acceptance by the peer group means everything. Exclusion or derision can be devastating. It’s always a shock for parents to discover their child has been affected.

OUTCAST: Noosa Pengari Steiner School Students Camilla Moia, Kahn Burrell, Ryan Tracey, Jethro Reed, Sianan McVeagh, Charlie Herbert, Louise Nilsson, Corey Green and Faith Thurnwald perform Cyber Teen “This play, Cyber Teen, shows the bullies, victims and bystanders in action and asks the audience which one are they?” The book is a followthrough on a promise made to students last year. “This is about valuing what Noosa’s young people are saying about the world they live in, not the world we adults would like to think they

live in.” Wilkie said while the subject matter was serious, teenagers were also incredibly resilient and hilarious. “Their work is insightful, brutally honest but also darkly comic. There were laughs as well as tears when it was performed.” “The main message? One person, one word, one act of kindness or bravery in the face of difficult odds can make a

world of difference. A life or death world of difference.” Royalties go to the school’s publishing unit, Pengari Press. news Large orders and cash flow Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy A LACK of planning and consultation can turn every business owner’s dream into their worst nightmare. Through hard work and perseverance you have created a company which reflects your culture and your work ethic. Your livelihood, residence and children’s education are all intrinsically linked to the success of your business. After years of steady and consistent growth the business has received a number of large orders for one of your more profitable lines. At this point in time many business owners will experience momentary relief from the day to day work pressures, not recognising that they are in fact at an intersection. Is it possible that this large order would be detrimental to your business? As a consequence of receiving the increased orders the business owner will in turn be required to purchase more stock, “and the clock starts ticking”. In addition, the increased volumes require additional staff demanding weekly payment and the clock continues to tick. The longer the clock ticks until you send out the finished goods, the longer the timeframe in which you will have to fund the growth in sales. The larger the orders and the larger the growth, i.e. the more successful you are, the greater the drain on your cash-flow. Until you actually receive payment you are in a precarious position. This order may have short sighted your thinking and you may have been slow to recognise or in fact have disregarded the early warning

signs such as a blow out in creditors, difficulty in paying BAS, a shortage of fast moving stock, inability to pay superannuation on due date, the necessity to enter into repayment plans, issue post dated cheques or even purchase stock on COD. They continually reassure themselves that it is a timing issue. Recognising that a material increase in turnover requires careful planning and funding will ensure that your business is not adversely affected by growth. Instead you will be able to enjoy the success and profit you are creating. The business owner should consult their accountant and prepare any amendment to their business plan focussing on the cash-flow impacts and the requirement for capital investment to meet the increase in demand. It will also be necessary to bring your financial accounts up to date so that you are in a position to demonstrate that the expected cash shortages are as a result of growth, not losses. Armed with a current business plan, accounts and cash-flow forecast, it is then off to your financier, usually your bank. You will need to involve your financier in your plans and discuss the most appropriate funding mechanism. Only then can your financier tailor your borrowings to your specific cashflow requirements. If you would like to discuss your business or any other banking matter, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

The Dukes team performing a stretcher carry Connondale Ranges NOOSA District High School students Megan Staples, Beau Graham, Robyn Bishop (absent)and Brayden Fell, pictured with their teacher Dean McMaster. The four students were award their Silver Award under the

internationally recognized Duke of Edinburgh program. All students are now attempting to obtain their Gold Award which will require 12 months of commitment. The program has been implemented at Noosa High to allow students

at risk to gain valuable life skills and contribute to their community. As part of this commitment these students will be entering a four-person team in the grueling Kakoda challenge race to be held in the hilly country of the Gold

Coast hinterland this July. As well as participating in this 96km trek in a cut of time of 39 hours they must raise close to $1000 in charity funds. Their teacher, Dean McMaster, will participate with them and has for the past three years mentored these students through the demanding Dukes program. “ I have led a pretty full and active life, my interest in the outdoor world was stirred during a school trip to Hinchinbrook Island and that interest led to planning and partaking in climbing expeditions all over the world, culminating in a successful team ascent of Everest in 2001. I am hoping to impart my experience as well as my love and respect of the outdoors on these kids, to get them

out of their comfort zone, away from their phones and computers and teach them some good old values such as hard work, mateship, courage, respect and perseverance” Meagan is the only girl on the Gold program “ I love this stuff, I have tried really hard and done stuff I didn’t think I could do. I was petrified of heights but now I am abseiling and climbing 50 meter cliffs. Mr. Mac and the other guys have supported me and I know my self confidence has improved – it’s a great program and I’m really looking forward to doing the Gold Award.” The team is now in training hard for the Kakoda Challenge and seeking sponsorship from any interested local business.

Praise for local graduates

: [L-R] Daniel Hoysted, Eli Williams, Jake Bryer, Hugh Wyatt, Brandon Gunn, Alex Daw, NCC Principal Mr David Rogers, Georgia Pattinson, Mary Hartley, Courtney Tyler, Daisy Rivers, Sarah Martin, Harriet Raison. THE future looks bright for the 2013 graduates of Noosa Christian College, Cooroy. In fact, over 80% of students in the class who were eligible to receive an Overall Position (OP) obtained a ranking from 1-15. An OP is a ranking given to senior students across the

state, based on their overall achievement in subjects approved by the Queensland Studies Authority. 92% of the students in the 2013 graduating class were eligible for an OP. Two graduates of the College in particular are to be congratulated on their results. Cooroy local Courtney

Tyler received an OP 2 placing her near the top percentage of Queensland students. Courtney was thrilled with her result, which allows her to pursue a career in Nutrition and Dietetics – and recently received a study offer from Griffith University in Brisbane. She is using this year to complete some personal

study and work prior to commencing her degree in 2015. Hugh Wyatt from Pomona is also excited about his achievement of an OP 4. He too has received an offer of placement, from the University of Queensland to study Engineering, and hopes to specialise in Aeronautical Engineer-

ing in the future. When asked what contributed to their excellent results, they said they had worked hard, done extra study and always tried their best. “I also really appreciated the extra study time and help offered by our teachers. “Being a part of a school where classes are smaller and teachers really cared was a huge help in studying for my senior certificate,” insisted Courtney, who has been a student at Noosa Christian College since the school opened in 2003. Congratulations are extended to each member of the Noosa Christian College class of 2013, for completing their senior studies many of whom have been accepted into their chosen field of study or obtained employment in the months following the end of school.

THE NOTEBOOK OF

Wellbeing

IMAGINE a place where you can ride your horse on a crisp cool morning through lush green rain forests, before hitting the waves with your friends and family at world famous beaches. A place where people are generous and kind and the community is like an extended family that supports each other through thick and thin. It sounds too good to be true… but more than 1,000 entries in the Erindale Park Community Promotion ‘What do you love about Cooroy’, tell of a town with true

character, charm, convenience and kindness. Jan Bramley entered the promotion twice, and her persistence paid off. Jan and her husband Daryl can now enjoy $500 worth of extras at Cooroy’s Super IGA for sharing what they love about this town. In 10 words Jan summarised Cooroy saying “It has city convenience with a country feel.” “Everything we need is here, post box, doctor, IGA ... the place just feels right,” Jan said. Jan and Daryl and their two children moved to Cooroy seven years ago

after many years in Western Australia. “In Cooroy you really feel like you are part of the community. It is nice to be able to walk into local shops and know people behind the counter,” Jan said. “People in Cooroy really support local things ... workshops at the library, Butter Factory art shows, music concerts, sporting clubs and the Christmas parade is just lovely.” The second successful participant in the promotion is Cooroy local Anne Winning, who will enjoy a $500 voucher at Maison de Provence for her entry which simply said: “Community spirit, country atmosphere, coastal lifestyle.” “I like to make the most of the cool summer mornings and because I live in Cooroy I can be riding my horse on the Noosa Tracks and Trails at 6am one morning, riding the waves at Noosa another morning, or playing golf on the affordable Cooroy golf course. It doesn’t get much better than that!,” she said. “I first moved to the

Sunshine Coast from Brisbane about 14 years ago ... I had horses, so chose to live around Pomona and Cooran until last year when I decided it was time to get a smaller property. “I considered several places to move to, but decided on Cooroy as I was always driving to Cooroy anyway, to shop, go to the library, the doctor or the dentist, to play golf or to go to the gym. I found a block just off Lake Macdonald Drive and local builder Ausmar Homes did a great job on my new house. “Cooroy meets all my requirements as a place to live for the semi-retirement phase of my life. I am able to have my horse on a decent sized acreage block, yet still be close to a town that has good services like shops, restaurants, cafes, doctors, dentists and the fantastic library.” Whilst Jan and Anne will share the spoils of the Erindale Park promotion, the large volume of entries share snippets of life of people who feel lucky to live in such a beautiful part

Jan Bamley at the Super IGA of the world, surrounded by friendly people. Kev and Val Kelly, the people behind the Erindale Park Community Promotion, said the feedback had been overwhelmingly positive would underpin future promotion for Erindale Park and Cooroy as a wonderful place to live. Breaking the mould TODAY’S modern family is almost unrecognisable from traditional households, according to the latest AMP.NATSEM report. 1 Life is more complex, family structures are more varied and the challenges of the modern age are placing ever greater pressure on the way we live. Today’s modern family usually starts with a couple living together before marriage, perhaps deciding to delay having children. And when they do start a family, while it’s more common for women to be the primary carer, most mothers will quickly return to work, at least part-time. · We’re having children later First time mothers are on average 29 years old, compared to 30 years ago when they were just over 25. And almost one in four babies are born to mums aged 35 or over. · More women are in the workforce More than half a million, or one in four Australian households, now have a female as their major breadwinner—140,000 more households than 10 years ago. · More children are in new family structures Blended and step-families now make up almost 11 per cent of Australian families with dependent children, compared to 6.8 per cent in 1986. · Our marriages are lasting longer… Divorce rates in Australia have stabilised at 2.2 divorces per 1,000 people and marriages are lasting longer—on average 12 years, up from 10 years in 1991. Changing families, changing finances It’s important to take into account your family structure when you’re managing your finances. If you’re the breadwinner, you should check you’re receiving a super boost. From 1 July 2013, the amount your employer is required to pay into your super increased to 9.25 per cent. log in online to find out whether you’re getting the correct super payments. If you have some disposable income to play with, you may want to put more money towards your super. You can put up to $25,000 of your pre-tax salary (including the super contributions your employer makes on your behalf) into your super at the concessional tax rate of 15% 2. If you’re expecting an addition to your family, you should review your insurance. If something happened to you, could your family pay the bills, cover the mortgage and put food on the table? A life insurance calculator can help you work out how much cover you may need and can be accessed via our website www.provisionwealth.com.au. And don’t forget to keep your beneficiaries up to date so your benefits go to the right people. If you’re taking time off to start a family, you should take advantage of every tax break out there. Whether you’re married, de facto or in a same-sex relationship, there’s a tax offset for couples when the higher earner makes extra contributions to their spouse’s super from their after-tax income. It’s a great way to boost your combined super, reduce your tax bill and build up your retirement nest egg 3. Want to know more? He has worked in many parts of Queensland including Charleville, Longreach and Gayndah and for past 12 years has been a Principal on the Sunshine Coast. Kindy opens new doors

FASHION, GIFTS & ACCESSORIES TO SUIT ALL

NEW ARRIVALS IN-STORE NOW Light Weight for warm summer days or just add a layer 28A MAPLE STREET THE 2014 students of Cooroy Community Kindergarten arrived to a wonderful surprise with the renovation works finally completed. Director Diana Markovits is delighted with the completed product, “After 28 years of service I didn’t think we would ever be able to raise the funds to have this built. The Government Grant has been like manna from heaven” she said. “It is absolutely beautiful, we really love it.” The $200,000.00 plus renovation has only been possible due to the receipt of funding from the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments. Additional funds raised over many years by hundreds of supportive families that have passed through the gates has also contributed to achieving this fantastic result. Feedback from the parent body and community members who have had the privilege to view the new facility has been wonderful. The newly renovated building really lends itself to the free indoor/outdoor program run at Cooroy Community Kindergarten, with the new kitchen, office and bi-fold doors allowing more access and visibility. The addition

of a new monster weatherproof sail extending over the decking and sandpit provides an all-weather play area for the children. And we are delighted with the user friendly access ramps for prams, strollers and wheelchairs. Teaching assistant Angie Hargie is overjoyed with the new kindy stating “The atmosphere is so homely with a modern touch – I just love it.” Committee and staff would like to applaud the work of Principal contractor, Gary Dean of Complete Coastal Constructions. “As with all construction works, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing, but the finished product is a credit to Gary and his team. We are so grateful for his patience and his tolerance in working around and meeting our requirements” said Committee President, Soraya McLean. “We have so many people to thank and we look forward to welcoming the community to our official opening at a date yet to be confirmed in March. And we forward to the continued generous support for fundraising throughout the year.”

pomona Pomona Railway Station Gallery POMONA Railway Station Gallery will be presenting an exhibition by award winning artist Pam Black. The exhibition title home ‘awe’ away will be held in the Carriage Room 15 February to 12 March. Opening ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm on the 15th. Pam has always loved painting and considers it to be an integral part of her life. She also enjoys working with clay and found objects and has exhibited throughout Queensland and Tasmania. Her “home ‘awe’ away” exhibition is inspired by living on seventeen acres of natural bushland, juxtaposed against her travels to Europe last year. Pam likes to walk through and photograph the creek on her hinterland property, highlighting geometric

shapes formed by the patterned tree trunks, branches and rock faces. She is drawn to the detail and likes to zoom in and paint the focal point. By experimentation, stripping back, layering and re-working, Pam is constantly seeking the contrast of light and dark to capture the spirit of the place. The selection of “Tourist Paintings” are close ups or glimpses derived from her time traipsing through Europe this

year. The stained glass windows of Notre Dame and the colourful Monet’s Garden in Giverney in particular, have introduced a new range of strong, bright colours to Pam’s work. The intention of the work is to evoke in the viewer their own memories and trigger thoughts of their place in the landscape. Here’s a small sample of what our customers say - Check out our Website for DOZENS more testimonials Just wanted to pass on my sincere thanks for all your assistance recently, with our purchase of the Ford Escape. Julie and I were delighted with great level of customer service you provided and it was very much appreciated. We were originally influenced to purchase a vehicle from your business based positive ‘word of mouth’ around town and it proved to be a good move. The obvious quality of vehicles that we’ve seen in your yard also gave us confidence to buy from you. You can be assured that we would be more than happy to refer our friends, family and work colleagues to you when they too are looking for a vehicle in the future. Rik & Julie H I recently purchased a vehicle from Noosa Village Autos. At all times the members of this family run business were considerate, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The purchase was completed punctually with the minimum of fuss and the car delivered on time. A subsequent and totally unforeseen electrical problem was dealt with efficiently with all due care and attention. I cannot fault the service I have received. All true and I cannot imagine what improvements you could introduce. Please keep up the good work. Eric Phillips

We have now purchased 3 cars from Noosa Village Motors. We have come back due to the fantastic service, honesty and knowledge of cars provided by the team. We have no problem recommending Noosa Village Motors to others. Kelvyn and Judy Grant I would like to thank Noosa Village Autos ,for their exceptional service during our recent purchase from them of a 2008 Toyota Prado.Staff went out of their way to ensure a hassle free transaction, with good old fashioned reliability of their word. We love our Prado, it drives like a new vehicle and can highly recommend them to anyone who wants to save heaps but know that they,ve bought quality. Go Noosa Village Autos!! Happy Bundaberg Customers Bob & Debbie So far we are very happy with the car and as to the service at time of purchase, well all we can say is it was the best service we’ve had anywhere. New Satellite Rotary Club in Eumundi

The new Members of the Satellite Rotary Club in Eumundi with A/DG Dai Mason and President Lyn Hodges HISTORY was made on Thursday 23rd January when the Rotary Club of Cooroy formed a “Satellite” Club in Eumundi with 16 new Members. The Satellite Club concept is a new initiative of Rotary International where an existing Rotary Club is able to form a subsidiary or “Satellite” Rotary Club under its umbrella to increase membership of Rotary in another location. “The concept of the Satellite Club is a great idea” said Cooroy Ro-

tary President Lyn Hodges. “It has allowed 16 Eumundi residents to join Rotary close to where they live. Some saw having to travel to Cooroy or Noosa from Eumundi for a weekly meeting as an impediment to joining Rotary” President Lyn said. “By forming the ‘Rotary Club of Cooroy Eumundi Satellite Club’ it has allowed those 16 to become members of Rotary in their own community and form what I believe is the first service Club in Eumundi. When numbers grow, the Satellite Club will be chartered by Rotary International as a Rotary Club in its own right”, Lyn said. Around 70 Rotarians

and guests were present to witness Acting District Governor Dai Mason induct the new members into the Club at a function held at the Sala Thai Restaurant in Eumundi. In welcoming the new Rotarians, A/DG Dai reminded them that “the object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.” “When you join Rotary you become part of a worldwide family”. Rotary is a worldwide organisation begun with the vision of one man Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member. Rotary has grown to 1.2 million members worldwide. Rotarians work in their communities, and worldwide, doing their part to promote greater understanding and world peace.

Clean up Australia CLEAN up Australia Day will be held on Sunday March 02, 2014. The Cooroy skip should be left in the car park adjacent to Apex Park during the previous week. All those persons interested in contributing toward this very worth while project, should present themselves for registration at the Rego-desk (for Insurance reasons), between 7.30 and 11.00 am on that day. Children most welcome but younger people need to be accompanied by responsible adults. Please wear solid footwear, a hat and gloves for safety sake and maybe a bottle of water, just in case there is none supplied. John Gabb – Cooroy Site Supervisor.

visiting upon arrival in New York. “I am also looking forward to seeing snow for the first time,” Ashleigh said. Ashleigh hopes to obtain a position in a New York ballet company following her intership. One of the biggest challenges young dancers face is the pressure to look a certain way. “I’m pretty lucky that I don’t put on weight, but I do make sure that I eat healthy,” Ashleigh said. Ashleig’s advice to aspiring dancers is to set goals and work towards achieving them. “Go for gold. Anything is possible,” Ashleigh said. With this wonderful attitude, anything is possible for Ashleigh and Noosa District State High School wishes her a successful career in dance.

COOROY RAG

EUMUNDI World Cinema is a new film club for grown-ups based on the Sunshine Coast aiming to take you around the world one movie at a time. Screening monthly, and packed with award winning feature films and shorts, it aims to promote cultural awareness and understanding but above all to entertain in a lively social environment. ‘Movie tragics’ throughout the coast will be exposed to a fine selection of drama, romance and comedy from the Americas, Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, India and Asia. A Classic Movie Night and an Australian Movie Night will also feature during the 11 month season, which commences 12 February. Movies are shown on a large indoor screen with equipment supplied by Trent Harvison of ‘Starry Night Outdoor Movies’. To make the night more of an ‘experience’ than ‘just a movie’, there will be decorations and food from the movies’ region, and we hope members will get into the spirit of the night by “dressing up” in the clothing of the area or period. The December French preview launch featured a glittering Eiffel Tower (courtesy of Lisa Williment of ‘Partee Petite’), French treats and cheeses, champagne and a host of berets and striped tops. For an individual membership of $60, and a minimum age of 18, members will enjoy 11 feature length international movies and 22 shorts from a different region each month and have the opportunity to vote for the following month’s feature. You can join at www.eumundiworldcinema.com/join. For a $5 donation at the door, a light supper will be served, including tea and coffee BYO alcohol and glasses. The February feature from Italy, chosen by members, is the multi-award winning “Ladri di biciclette” (Bicycle Thieves). Also known

as The Bicycle Thief, the black and white neorealist film is a work of outstanding artistry from director Vittorio de Sica. Released in 1948 the film portrays the poverty and desperation of a father searching for his stolen bicycle and provides an unforgettable picture of post-war Italy. Benefits of Vitamin C for your skin INCORPORATING a little Vitamin C into your skin care routine could be one of the best choices you’ll make this year. Vitamin C helps restore and repair damaged skin because it’s an antioxidant. Vitamin C also stops the damaging effects of free radicals, which when allowed to build up in the body increase our risk of disease and speed up the aging process. Vitamin C is critical for your body and plays an important role in maintaining healthy, resilient skin. While young skin is full of vitamin C, aging skin naturally loses this nutrient over time. Other factors like exposure to UV light, pollutants and cigarette smoke compound the decline of vitamin C, contributing to signs of aging. The good news is that you can fight back by replenishing your skin’s vitamin C levels to help to combat and even reverse time’s effect on your face. Wrinkles One of the most powerful functions of vitamin C is its role in the production of collagen, a protein that gives your skin its elasticity. As you age, collagen breaks down and wrinkles begin to form. Stabilizing your skin’s levels of vitamin C can help to counteract wrinkle formation by increasing collagen production. Age Spots Age spots are essentially sun damage, and vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, shown to reduce the number of sunburned cells as well as reverse age-related damage to skin. While it’s not a replacement for sunscreen, vitamin C protects against and may repair UV damage like discoloration and fine

lines. Taking vitamin C through a supplement or food is beneficial to your health, but to specifically target signs of aging on your face, topical vitamin C is best. The Aspect line of skin care products offers a great Vitamin C serum called Extreme C 20. Extreme C 20 tackles just about every sign of dermal ageing you care to imagine and does so from every conceivable angle, thanks to an exclusive breakthrough combination of cutting edge amino peptides, face saving Vitamin C, cellular antioxidants, corrective botanicals and skin energizing extracts all expertly blended into a light as air, paraben- and fragrancefree transcellular serum. The difference behind Aspects Extreme C 20 and other Vitamin C skin care products is that it contains Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate – a Stable Lipid Soluble Vitamin C ester. This means it is a potent, non-irritating, highly stable and optically pure Vitamin C ester that is guaranteed to remain fresh and active till the very last drop. Other Vitamin C products are highly unstable and quickly become inactive when exposed to air, water, heat or light. In fact, many Vitamin C skin care products can lose up to 90% of their original potency within 30 days after they are manufactured. Lakeridge Health and Beauty stock a full range of Aspect Products including Extreme C 20. If you are after a turbo boost for your skin, try our Aspect Clinical Skin Peels. Call us now to find out more on 5442 6239 or drop into to our clinic at 3 Ruby St Cooroy.

The danger of Scoliosis and its effects

Denture Services

AUSTRALIAN children are at danger of developing scoliosis and lifelong back pain according to Australian Chiropractors. The Chiropractors Association of Australia says the widespread withdrawal of government funding for school screenings for scoliosis means the condition may now grow undetected in many cases. “In it’s early stage a scoliosis doesn’t always produce pain that’s why it is important to have a child’s spine checked regularly by a chiropractor especially if as a parent you start to notice a difference in your child’s shoulder height or hip level. It may be a scoliosis starting to progress” Says Dr. Adam Roache “If children aren’t getting monitored for the disease, it translates that many cases will escape early diagnosis which is imperative for successful treatment.” He said. Scoliosis is a progressive degenerative disease which is often referred to as ‘curvature of the spine’. It causes the spine, ribs and pelvis to twist and rotate front to back, up and down or sideways. The condition usually develops during the rapid growing teenage years and is more likely to affect females that males. “If spinal scoliosis is detected early enough appropriate strategies may be addressed to slow down the curvature. If the problem persists into adult life it may then cause back pain, headaches, decrease in mobility and effects on internal organs and systems due to reduced nerve flow” Dr Adam said. Anyone concerned about the spinal health or overall well-being of their children are urged to visit their local chiropractor who is skilled in musculoskeletal health and has five years of university training. You can book an appointment with Dr. Adam Roache at 7 Garnet St Cooroy or phone on 5472 0808.

processed ingredients and refined sugar that comes with it. When we crave chocolate, our bodies are actually craving the Magnesium and unless you are buying good quality dark chocolate, most of the chocolate out there is basically junk food that is calorie rich, nutrient poor. However, when we satiate our cravings with what our bodies actually require, we are packing in those nutrients whilst also giving our soul a big hug too! Here is a wholesome, delicious Raw Chocolate recipe that is super quick and easy to make (no cooking required) to have on hand for when those cravings hit. This is seriously good, guilt-free heaven.

Raw Chocolate Recipe DF GF VG Melt 1 cup coconut oil in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat and whisk in ¾ cup raw cacao powder, ½ teaspoon salt and 1/3 cup maple syrup raw honey. Pour into a shallow dish lined with baking paper and top with chosen toppings and pop into the freezer to set. Or, if you have a cute mould, pour the mixture into that like I did! Store in an air-tight container in the fridge as it will melt at room

temperature. Play around with the toppings with ingredients like fresh blueberries or raspberries, goji berries, raw cacao nibs, buckwheat, shredded coconut, raisins, dried mango, chilli, the choice is endless. Another beautiful addition to your raw chocolate is to add a few drops of edible essential oil. We stock the gorgeous doTERRA essential oils in clinic which are food grade and of the highest quality. I recommend Wild Orange or Peppermint. For more info or for any questions please contact Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526 or visit www.maplest acupuncture.com.au

COSMETIC Tattooist Janice Trainer, explains how permanent makeup and restorative cosmetic tattoo techniques can bring permanent beauty to facial features. Defined eyebrows, coloured lip lines and long-lasting eyeliner – these are no longer confined to high fashion runways. Janice trainer from Enhanced Beauty says cosmetic tattoo treatments can crate hassle-free mornings for those whose lifestyles don’t allow the luxury of free time between work and kids, and for women who have undergone reconstruction surgery. With a range of pigments to choose from, eyeliner tattooing provides permanent makeup that allows the wearer to sleep, swim and exercise without the smudge factor. This combined with eyebrow tattooing, can restore vibrancy to the entire eye area and help those who have plucked too much, or have scars or gaps in their eyebrows. Similarly, lip tattooing can be ideal for women

lacking a definite lip shape, have pale lips or just want to enhance the look of their pout. Janice says clients should be aware that the colour may seem stronger at firs but this will fade back to a more natural-looking colour. Immediately after the treatment, the cosmetic tattoo will appear brighter in colour, however in most cases clients lose approximately 20 to 40 percent of intense colour throughout the healing process, she explains. Final results are usually apparent after around two weeks. Cosmetic Tattooing can also be used to enhance the areola of the breast. Women who have recently undergone, reconstructive breast surgery often opt for this treatment. ‘Paramedical cosmetic tattooing can help restore a woman’s selfconfidence, particularly for those who have undergone a mastectomyit can really help them during their healing process,’ says Janice. Cosmetic Tattooing can also improve the ap-

pearance of vitiligo, a disease characterised by patches of skin discolouration where there is loss of natural skin pigmentation, by camouflaging the diseased spots. It can also recreate the look of hair alopecia sufferers; a health condition deriving from the immune system (white blood cells), which results in the arrest of the immune growth stage, including facial hair. The technical aspect of Cosmetic treatments is key to creating optimal results so ensure your practitioner is highly skilled and experienced in the art of Cosmetic Tattooing. Janice says it is also important for the practitioner to have an artistic eye to create a look that will best suit each individual client. Most Cosmetic Tattooing will last for up to 2 years before an enhancement will need to be done. ‘My job is to guide my clients through the options that will achieve what they’re specially looking for while also reflecting their individually.’ Janice is a fully qualified Cosmetic and Paramedical Cosmetic Tattoo Technician, and has been working in this area for over 20 years, she is also the Australian Cosmetic Tattoo Associations Instructor for Queensland and has been instructing for over 10 years.

Pre- Season Sports Screening WITH the winter sports sign-on happening all over the coast, now is the time to think about pre-season screening, especially if you have suffered with injuries before. Pre-season screening is an assessment tool used by physiotherapists and sporting teams to try to eliminate injuries that can plague a player during the season. It involves checking the spinal regions and other joints of the body for any movement dysfunctions, testing muscle length and

strength, testing your core stability and checking the biomechanics of the lower limb. Basically it is a “head to toe” check up for your musculo-skeletal system. Once an assessment has been done the qualified Physiotherapists will set a program aimed at addressing the areas that were found to be a problem. First test of the year should be an eye test WITH one in four children suffering an undetected vision problem, Optometrists are encouraging parents to ensure their children make a healthy start to the 2014 school year by having their eyes examined. “The number one tip for a successful school year is to get your child’s eyes checked by an optometrist specialising in children’s vision care. Good vision is crucial to a child’s performance both inside and outside the classroom,” says local optometrist Jenny Currie of optometry@cooroy. Along with allergies and asthma, eye disorders are the most common long-term health problems experienced by children. Undetected vision problems may also contribute to learning difficulties and behavioural issues. With 80 per cent of all learning experienced through vision, many children with undetected vision problems often fail to progress as well as they could in school. “Vision problems may not always be apparent to the child or the parent so it’s important to make sure an eye examination is checked off the ‘back to school’ list before school starts” says Heather McLeod, also of optometry@cooroy. Common signs of possible vision problems in children: Complaints of blurred vision;

Tired eyes or headaches; Frequently losing place while reading; Complaining words are moving; Able to read only for a short time; Poor reading comprehension; Frequent rubbing of eyes; Squinting; Irritated or teary eyes Symptoms such as these can often be misinterpreted as behavioural issues or learning disabilities causing children to become impatient, lack attention or become fidgety during the day. “Parents should not rely only on vision screenings conducted at schools to pick up eye problems. A thorough eye examination should be conducted at the beginning of the school year to ensure any changes to eye health are picked up early,” said Jenny. “At optometry@cooroy we specialise in paediatric vision care and are one of the few optometric practices on the Sunshine Coast offering full scope behavioural optometry services including Visual Information Processing skills screenings and assessment as well as Vision Therapy programs.” For further information please contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street or call 5442 5555. COOROY RAG New ‘Rookie’ melds well into the ‘Ace’ team at Hinternoosa ROD Wilcox has been a local for 8 years in the Landscaping business finishing off the presentation to new homes and dressing up the entry to old ones too. As a home owner and investor himself, Rod had always had a desire to move into Real Estate and felt this was a natural progression. Rod quickly immersed himself in the industry and won the confidence of his colleagues and clients after hours of dedication and training, learning the Hinternoosa methods that bring success to our customers. COOROY RAG

Permaculture Noosa THE next Permaculture meet will be on Thursday, February 20 from 7pm at Cooroy Memorial Hall. Gary from Kookaburra Organics has been an organic farmer in the region for over twelve years. He understands the climate in south east Queensland and he regularly shares his knowledge at workshop events. Gary is a regular presenter at the Qld Garden Expo. Kookaburra Organics is a certified organic market garden with an online home delivery service servicing Brisbane CBD and suburbs, and the Sunshine coast every week. Authentic and Clean – this is how real food should taste! Every family deserves food grown with integrity and with appropriate labelling certification to support its origin. We need to have confidence in the food chain from farmer to plate. Growing your own Mulch by Kerry Nagle: Over the last 12 years Kerry has spent hundreds of dollars on buying and transporting bales of mulch hay for the garden, only to have it disappear into the soil over the course of a season. Spurred on by two other talks at PN meetings, ie one by Elisabeth Fekonia and another by Frances Michaels, Kerry decided to aim to produce all the mulch for her gardens on site. When a bale of hay sat in the carport for over six months, she realised she was there. Kerry will tell you what she grows and how she uses it to mulch and feed her gardens. Russian/Elephant Garlic by Mel Hobbins: Mel Hobbins came to Australia in late 2004, from the UK, and has been on their 30 acre Traveston property for 9 years. Quite a change from the small house blocks he had in the UK, although Mel had several Allotment Gardens, most without a water supply. Although primarily a horse property he has made an impact on the landscape with an extensive Orchard, traditional raised veggie beds, a 900 tree hardwood plantation, rain forest and revegetation plantings and since 2010 has been experimenting with and expanding plantings of Tropical Veggies and support species. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members share their surplus home grown produce by giving, exchanging or selling it), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. A Cattleya seen at the last meeting THE Noosa Club held it’s first meeting at the Tinbeerwah Hall on the1st of February. The meeting was very well attended with 5 new potential growers joining us. The club caters for Orchids and Foliage and there was a very good display for show and tell. The Guest Speaker for the day was Margie Tinson who presented a terrific talk on preparing Bromeliads for the meeting and shows. Margie has a wealth of knowledge and is pleased to pass this on. My feelings about the club are to help one another to learn as much as possible. The Club is conducting a Growers Workshop on the 22nd of March at one of the member’s houses. This will be open to everyone, general public and members alike. There is no obligation to join the club. We do not have the time during a meeting to cover a lot of

the growing procedures so decided to hold a series of workshops. If anyone has any problem plants they can bring them along and hopefully one of the members can be of assistance. Orchids are one of the easiest plants to grow with a little basic knowledge. For all enquires please contact John on 54832764. EVEN though there is the sale of our club and greens hanging over our heads, it is bowls as usual at Cooroy Bowls Club. The greens have been renovated and look and play fantastically well. A huge thanks needs to go to our volunteers who tirelessly turn up regularly to maintain them and keep the club looking tidy. We will continue to play bowls and enjoy a drink and snack afterwards with the help of our trained volunteer bar assistants. Despite the heatwave conditions, a full green turned up for the first match of the season, Tuesday Jackpot pairs. Much fun and frivolity was had by all and the drinks flowed freely. High Rollers and Business Bowls kick off this week, again with full greens. The players and community are really backing us up with their sup-

port showing us they really care. The Hinterland Challenge has commenced and Cooroy is represented each week in the competition. We have had mixed results so far but spirits are still high. If you haven’t ever played bowls and would like to give it a try, Friday afternoon from 5.00pm is the time for you. There is always someone on hand to help and coach. In fact a game of barefoot bowls is the ‘in’ social event at the moment. So if you are looking for a different way to celebrate a birthday, hen’s or buck’s night, we are still open for that type of event. The community can continue to show their support by booking a fun session. We know that you will be guaranteed a good time. Bowls are available and again there are plenty of people willing to help.

Cooroy Probus Club

Ron Strudwick, Glenis Stevenson, Nancy Hesse and Derek Stevenson enjoying lunch at the Yandina Pub. THE Cooroy Probus Club took no rest over January holding their regular meeting on the 6th and enjoying a Pub lunch at Yandina on the 20th. Australia Day saw many of us gathered in Lions park, Noosaville, to celebrate two very special members, Carol and Trevor Blake, becoming Australian Citizens after a lengthy battle with bureaucracy. They are both true assets to our country volunteering their time and energy in a wide range of community projects. Cooroy Probus gained many new members during 2013 who I am sure

will be anxious to contribute their ideas to what happens in the club. We look forward to another year of fun and fellowship with our like minded Probus friends. The AGM will be held on 3rd March at the Anglic Church Hall in Miva Street followed by lunch at the Cooroy RSL. The new committees will need to be quick off the mark organising guest speakers, outings, dinner dates and theatre visit. Anyone interested in joining the Cooroy Probus Club should contact our membership team on 5485 0415.
