King of the Mountain race takes top sports award THE Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club says the integral roles played by volunteers, community groups and sponsors, indeed the support of the whole town, as being crucial to the King of the Mountain footrace being named the top sporting event in the 2017 Sunshine Coast Sports Awards. Conducted by the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation and now in their 25th year, the sports awards recognise and reward the outstanding achievements and contributions that individuals and teams have made to sport on the Sunshine Coast. The ‘Mountain Lions’ celebrated their win at the awards ceremony held this year at the Twin Waters resort. In accepting the award, Lions Club member, Heather Manders, KOM Chairperson said longevity and a well-organised event held over 38 years had cemented the King of the Mountain in the hearts and minds of the public and the people of Pomona. Heather thanked Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa and the Bendigo Bank, the major sponsors of the event, held every July. However, it was Lions Club members and volunteers who gave tirelessly of their time and effort to make the race work for the 100 runners and up to 15,000 people who attend every year. The event pour money into the coffers of local groups and helps fund Lions Club activities throughout the year. “Our Lions Club members are ordinary people doing extraordinary things like supporting and fundraising for charities and people in need and supporting the local community. The race works because of its spectacle and wide appeal. The race up Mt Cooroora attracts elite athletes, but we also welcome the novices who can compete in under the hour. The 4.2 km race from the centre of town up and back is a challenge and not for the faint hearted.” The King of the Mountain’s reputation also has been enhanced through a 31-year association and friendly trans-Tasman rivalry with New Zealand’s premier mountain race up Mt Edgecombe. Heather said Pomona’s big day was everchanging. “In 2016 we organised our first ever Prince and Princess Race (3.4km) aimed at nine to 13-year-olds so that we can attract a new generation of mountain race competitors.” The junior race attracted 60 runners last year.” This year’s event will be held on Sunday 23 July 2017.

What a win! Geoff Edwards, Vicki Dessaix, Heather Manders and Barry Stewart join Cr. Joe Juresevic with the award received last Friday night at Sunshine Coast Sports Awards held at Twin Waters

Lower Mill Site restoration work begins

The boiler room chimney removal

WORK to repair part of Cooroy’s heritage-listed Lower Mill Site began this week. Council is overseeing the repairs in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. The project will concentrate on the old boiler house and kiln. Contractors will remove asbestos, repair termite-damaged timber and replace weathered chamfer boards, plus remediate the chimney and reinforce the roof and walls. “This work will make the building safe so we can reopen it to the public. It will also ensure its long-term preservation,” said Heritage Levy Advisory Committee Chair, Cr Jess Glasgow. The Queensland Government transferred the site to Noosa Council in 2002 after the mill closed in 2000 as a result of the Regional Forestry Agreement. The boiler house, kiln and associated buildings were added to the State’s heritage register in 2008. Cr Glasgow said the Mill was an important part of Cooroy’s history, with the timber industry being one of Noosa’s earliest industries. “The kiln was the first drying kiln to be built in the region and it’s the only known remaining example of a timber drying kiln in the Sunshine Coast region,” he said. Built in 1956, the kiln paved the way for the sale of timber to markets that demanded lower moisture content than could be achieved by air-drying. “This project, funded from Council’s heritage levy, will bring the facility back up to a safe standard so we can reopen it to the community and ensure its preservation,” he said. Council has appointed Cooran-based Marbelle Pty Ltd as primary contractor. Work is expected to take three months. Once the boiler house has been refurbished parts of it will again reopen to the public so they can learn about the former mill operation. “The site will be fenced off and we’ll need to reclaim some car parking spaces adjacent to the Cooroy Woodworkers Club Inc. and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Inc. buildings to house machinery. Council appreciates the community’s patience while the work is completed.”

news How much does air conditioning cost each month? SUPER-cooling your home might sound like an appealing proposition as we swelter through our blistering summer, but many of us are deterred by how much an air conditioner costs to run. While air conditioners are often the number one suspect for larger than expected electricity bills, staying cool may not have to cost you as much as you think. If you’re running on Tariff 11, the cost through Origin Energy is 25.586 cents per kw hour. There are some inevitable costs that come with owning an air conditioner: The initial purchase price, installation, ongoing maintenance, and of course running costs all add up. But there are ways to help minimise the cost of keeping cool. Here are a few: • Consider an energy efficient air conditioner: Energy efficient air conditioners cost less to run and could save you in the long term. Remember, the more stars on an energy star rating, the more efficient the appliance. • Set your air conditioner to the right temperature: Even slight changes to the air conditioner temperature settings can add a surprising amount to your electricity bill. 24 degrees is recommended. • Consider alternatives to air conditioning: While modern air conditioners might not cost as much as you think, there are definitely cheaper alternatives. Consider evaporate coolers, ceiling fans, portable air conditioners or practical cooling solutions. • Keep your air conditioner clean: A well-maintained air con unit will run more efficiently than one that has never been cleaned. The harder your system has to work to reach the temperature you have set, the more electricity it will use. • Make sure you’re not paying too much for electricity: If you haven’t compared electricity plans recently, you might not be getting the best deal.

The Impact Boxing Academy was awarded the 2016 Sunshine Coast Junior Sports Team of the Year at the annual Sunshine Coast Sports Awards night held at the Twin Waters Resort on January 27th. The event attracted local government members, sporting bodies, athletes and sponsors from all over the coast. When you consider that this award takes in all sports across the board on the Sunshine Coast, it is fair to say that this is an outstanding acheivement for the team.. The main deciding factor in winning this award has been the outstanding success the the Impact Boxing Academy had in 2016. The team had 116 bouts with an impressive 83 wins from

those bouts. Domestically the team of 16 competing athletes won 5 Australian Titles, 9 Qld State Titles, 7 Wide Bay Titles, & 6 National Golden Gloves Titles. Internationally the team won 5 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal in Poland. They won 2 Celtic Cup Titles in Ireland. To say that these kids are performing well above average is an understatement. “I am so proud of these kids,” said trainer Mark Evans. They are getting out of this sport exactly what they put in. Hard work plus dedication equals results. For the club to win this award is an amazing achievement and we feel truly humbled and grateful to have been not only nominated but to be awarded this prestigious

award. I love these kids like they are my own and as their coach, their dreams and aspirations become mine and we chase them together as a team. We truly are one big family.” All this from a back yard gym in Cooroy. 2017 is already shaping up to be an even bigger year for the Impact team with the addition of a few more boxers ready to make their debut for the existing team of boxers. “I would like to thank all the parents that sacrifice so much time for their kids to follow their dreams through sport, i would also like to thank my own family for their support. Without the support of your loved ones and the people around you this sort of success would be impossible. Thank You!” Coach Mark Evans said.

‘Before I Die’ project NOOSA Council are currently working on a community art project called ‘Before I Die’. The project is a global public art project with over 2000 walls in over 75 countries. The concept behind this ‘Before I Die’ wall is to turn a public, shared

place (like a wall) into an engaged and interactive space where people can stop and think and reflect on their life, share their hopes and dreams with others (by writing on the wall), and in turn, inspire others. There will be two walls constructed at this stage

– one at on the external wall of the RSL in Cooroy and the other in Noosa Junction in Arcadia Walk. Looking at the other walls around the world they seem to become spaces full of ideas, creativity and engagement so it’s very exciting

Council is bringing this to the wonderful Cooroy community. The wall launch will be on Wednesday 15th at 10am and a number of Year 12 leaders from NDSHS will be writing up their hopes and dreams. Looking at the other

walls around the world they seem to become spaces full of ideas, creativity and engagement so it’s very exciting to be bringing this to the wonderful Cooroy community. It is hoped that the wall will be up for at least three months.

No Cooroy Bus to Sunshine Coast University Hospital The State Government has just announced that the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) at Birtinya will open its doors in stages in March and April. The state of the art hospital will be a real boon to Sunshine Coast residents as it will deliver many of the clinical services and procedures of Brisbane’s big city hospitals. Outpatient services will start on 21 March and inpatient services, emergency, operating theatres and maternity will open progressively from 27 March. When the maternity and acute care sections are open, wards offering those services will close at Nambour General Hospital. Nambour will be revamped for subacute care, outpatient and rehabilitation services. This means that Noosa Shire residents who are seriously ill, need surgery or about to give birth will need to go to Birtinya. Councillor Ingrid Jackson says she is deeply disappointed that Translink has refused to provide a direct bus service from our shire to the new hospital. “For Noosa hinterland residents, the Route 631 bus trip from Cooroy to

Nambour General hospital now takes a scheduled 42 minutes. In contrast, the trip from Cooroy to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital - needing the 631 plus two or three bus transfers - will take 2 to 2½ hours. And the journey from Noosa Junction will take 1½ to 1 ¾ hours on Routes 620 and 611,” said Ms Jackson. “Meanwhile my research reveals that other transport options are expensive and not always available. “A one way trip by taxi will cost around $120 and by Uber $65. For people over 65 registered with My Aged Care, a return weekday trip for outpatients will cost $55, but not all types of illness are covered and no subsidy is available for hospital admission or discharge. “Noosa Community Support has told me their driver service is fully subscribed and that they cannot take on any more. “Along with Glen Elmes MP, I have met with TransLink to advocate a direct bus service, but to no avail. “I will continue to seek solutions – both through Noosa Council and the State Government - for faster, cheaper and more direct public transport access to the new University Hospital.”

If you’ve bought a blow up pool to try and beat the heat this summer be aware of the safety requirements. Your portable pool or spa is covered by pool safety laws if it:

• can hold more than 300mm of water • has a volume of more than 2000L • has a filtration system. If so, you’ll need to: • get building approval

• get a certificate from a licensed building certifier stating that your pool complies with relevant pool safety laws before filling the pool or spa with more than 300mm of water • register your pool or spa. If your portable pool isn’t assembled and contains less than 300mm of water, it doesn’t need to comply with the pool safety laws until it’s assembled and contains more than 300mm of water. Queensland’s pool safety laws don’t apply to portable pools and spas that meet all of the below criteria: • you can’t fill it with more than 300mm of water • it has a maximum volume of 2000L • it has no filtration system. All 3 criteria must be met to be exempt.

COUNCIL has taken an extra, non-compulsory step of consulting with the community before preparing a draft of its new planning scheme. Mayor Tony Wellington says the initiative, which began with the release of the New Noosa Plan Discussion Paper, has paid dividends with over 500 responses provided by the community. “The Discussion Paper outlined ideas for how the new Noosa Plan might address and manage future community needs. It was arranged under a set of themes that included economy, employment, housing choices and environment. The booklet also considered the various localities that make up the Shire. “Notably, the feedback we received from the community overwhelmingly supported the ideas contained in the Discussion Paper. Residents are generally happy with their Shire and do not want to see significant changes occur.” “The range of submissions included suggestions to improve to house designs, increase flexibility for businesses, and generate more lifestyle and entertainment options in Noosa Junction.” “Of course some responses related to matters that are outside the parameters of a planning scheme, and thus were more concerned with Council operations. This feedback has been forwarded to appropriate staff for consideration.” “As long as they left contact details, all those who contributed to this initial consultation process will receive written responses from staff.” “Council’s Strategic Planning team will soon commence drafting the new Noosa Plan, hoping to complete that process by the end of the year. They will be speaking with a range of stakeholders as they progress, including business, professional and environment representatives.” “The initial draft will then go to the State Government for its first interest check. Once returned from the State, the draft plan will be made available for a second round of community consultation. Once that process is completed, the final draft should be gazetted by the State in 2019.” “This is arguably the most important work that this Council will perform. The new planning scheme will provide the blueprint for development of our Shire over the next decade.” “I thank those who have participated so far, and look forward to further engagement with the community as the development of the new planning scheme rolls out.” “I firmly believe that, in years to come, Noosa will be viewed as having had greater foresight than most other developed places on the planet. Historically, Noosa residents have been both forward-looking and willing to advocate for that vision.” To view all aspects of the consultation on the New Noosa Plan Discussion paper, please visit https:// yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au/projects/the-new-noosaplan-discussion-paper

Grow up! It seems our Prime Minister got a bit of a thump, In his phone call with the new President Donald Trump. Malcolm apparently asked if an arrangement was for real, But Trump replied angrily it was just a dumb deal. The media ran hot with all the confrontations, And before you know it, it was a mess of declarations. They’re like a couple of kids, calling each other names, He said, no I said, but he said, it seemed they were playing games. Frankly the ordinary citizen just couldn’t care less, He knows it will finish as usual, in a great political mess. Why can’t they act like grownups, calmly talk the problem through, Wars in the past have been started by this sort of political to-do. Trump is a renowned deal maker, that is how he operates, He’s obviously hard to handle, but that’s how he dominates. A horde of gurus and know-alls will need to be interviewed, Whatever they don’t know they’ll make up, usually misconstrued. They’ll tell us what everyone’s thinking, they pretend to know what’s going on, Especially in the mind of the unpredictable Don. What’s in that mind of his, we like to believe it’s true, Trouble is that no-one knows, where he’s leading us to. Don’t count the years, count the memories

Community Bank branches announces junior directors for 2017

New 2017 junior SCCFSL board directors, Chelsea Ward, Kayla Robertson and Jack Filtness are pictured with Geoff Edwards after the appointments Have you ever dreamed what it would be like to sit on a board of directors? Well, that opportunity has arrived for three Noosa District State High School Year 12 students and they’re pretty excited. Jack Filtness, Kayla Robertson and Chelsea Ward all have a keen interest in business. Last week, they were appointed as Junior Observer Directors for 2017 on a board that manages one of the only few publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. As many locals are

aware, SCCFSL (Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited) manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin and the Bendigo Bank agency in Pomona. Since 2008, these same Community Bank branches have combined to give back more than $2.1 million to community groups, schools and organisations right across our region. The branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, February 15, 2017

money stays in the area for local investment. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at Cooroy Library - and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at the school each June, Jack, Kayla and Chelsea were made aware of a program where they could attend each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how

community banking works on a boardroom level. It’s a big step in the right direction in the development of any career and they have seen firsthand how it can lead to a great job - maybe even close to home. “I know I speak for Kayla and Chelsea in saying how happy we are to have been given this opportunity,” Jack said. “Cooroy and Pomona manager, Geoff Edwards and the SCCFSL board are filled with directors who have years of experience and great success in the business world and they’re really lovely people too. “They’re all actively involved in their community and keen to pass on their knowledge. “It’s a great head start to learn how a board works and also to learn more about the important part the Community Bank branches play in Cooroy, Marcoola, Tewantin and Pomona’s future. It’s just amazing how much time and money the branches have invested in our communities already for all our benefit,” Jack added.

Personal Risk Insurance made easy Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy A few weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of protecting your income and your ability to earn an income. You do this by way of Personal Risk Insurance. This Personal Risk Insurance comes in several forms including Income Protection, Trauma Insurance, and Life Insurance. Last time we focused on Income Protection Insurance and its ability to replace your income should you be unwell and able to work. Let’s look at Trauma Insurance. It can seem similar to Income Protection however it is generally a ‘lump sum’ paid to an individual when you suffer or are diagnosed with a specific illness. The types of illnesses covered can vary however the common ones tend to be cancer, heart attack, and stroke. A lump sum amount is chosen when the policy is taken and this the amount paid if necessary. This insurance is to be taken on its own or in conjunction with another type of Personal Risk Insurance. Unfortunately, the likelihood of people suffering these types of illnesses is increasing. Fortunately, the survival rate for these illnesses is also high. People however need funds to assist them through this. Therefore, we are seeing an increased demand for this type of insurance. There are also many factors to consider when identifying an amount to insure for. These include: • Possible medical and rehabilitation costs. • Ongoing nursing or carer costs. • Change of living environment such as moving to better accommodation or home modifications.

• Living expenses while you recovering. What we don’t want to see is any of these traumatic circumstances use up equity in peoples’ homes or depleting life savings. Life Insurance is probably the more well known type of insurance. It is generally paid as a lump sum on the death of the person insured. This type of insurance is well known however what common discussion is often around is the amount to insure for. Some want to cover primarily debt while others want to include additional funds. Unfortunately what we see is remaining living family can find themselves in financial difficulty within a short period of time after the death of the primary breadwinner. Trauma and Life Insurance are important. There are many and varied options available and all are best discussed with a professional Financial Planner to assist with correct policy and coverage. If you have any questions about any form of insurance, please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Seven steps to setting up an SMSF Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* IF you’re thinking about managing your own super, it’s a good idea to know what’s involved before deciding to jump in. It can be hard to know where to start or what’s ahead when you embark on setting up your own self-managed super fund (SMSF). You might like the idea of having greater control over your retirement savings, but there will be other things to consider, such as whether you have time to manage an SMSF and if you’ll need assistance. If it’s something you’ve been thinking about, we look at some of the steps involved, which include: Consider starting with professional advice; Determine your fund’s structure; Establish a trust deed; Register your SMSF; Set up your fund’s bank account; Create an investment strategy; Stay up-to-date. An SMSF won’t be for everyone. You’ll need to consider your own circumstances and goals, and this is where engaging with an SMSF specialist, such as your financial adviser and or accountant could help. It’s also important to be aware that an SMSF comes with a lot of responsibility, such as reporting, tax and administrative obligations, which you’ll need to be across to ensure you’re meeting regulations. Speaking to a professional could help you weigh up the pros and cons, and if you do go ahead, they may be able to provide ongoing guidance around how to set up and run your fund effectively. An SMSF can have up to four members where these individuals, or a company, act as the fund’s trustee, so you’ll need to choose between an individual or corporate trustee structure. An individual trustee structure can be a cheaper and simpler option. This is because you don’t need to establish a company when you choose an individual trustee structure, and members are not required to understand and adhere to corporations law.

While it can be a cheaper option initially, if your fund members change over time, the fees and paperwork associated with this may outweigh any upfront cost savings. A corporate trustee structure on the other hand, will generally give you more flexibility, choice and potential protection from liability claims. However, all fund members will broadly need to be directors of the corporate trustee company. It’s also often easier and cheaper to add a member or remove one. And, as corporate trustee structures can cater for a single member or director, if one member of a two-member fund leaves or dies, the fund can continue to operate without needing to restructure. Further, if you’re looking to borrow money to buy property in your SMSF, a corporate trustee structure could be a better option, as most banks require this structure to be in place when lending to an SMSF. Each structure has its own requirements. A trust deed is a legal document that sets out the rules for establishing and operating your fund. According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), it includes information such as the fund’s objectives, who can be a member and whether superannuation benefits can be paid as a lump sum or income stream. The fund’s governing rules are based on the trust deed as well as superannuation laws. The nominated trustees, who need to meet eligibility criteria, are typically appointed under the trust deed and are bound to the rules that are set out in it. Every SMSF must be registered with the ATO if it is to receive the tax benefits that come with superannuation. This is when you can nominate for your fund to be regulated, get a tax file number (TFN) and Australian business number (ABN), and register for goods and services tax (GST) if necessary. You need to set up a bank account for your SMSF which is separate from trustees’ indi-

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

vidual bank accounts. You can roll superannuation into this account and it’s where future contributions and income from investments will be paid. While you don’t need a separate bank account for each member of the fund, you’ll need to document and keep records of members’ contributions, investment earnings and payments. Another thing to note is, if your SMSF receives contributions from employers, you may need what’s called an electronic service address to capture various data. Your fund’s investment strategy, which needs to be documented, determines how your fund will invest money—it may include a mix of cash, term deposits, shares, managed funds and direct property. Some of the things you’ll need to consider when creating your fund’s investment strategy are: The personal circumstances of all fund members; The expected risks and returns of the fund’s investments; The benefits of diversifying the fund’s investments; How easily the fund’s assets can be converted into cash; The insurance needs of fund members; The fund’s ability to pay benefits to members when they retire; Stay up-to-date. It’s important to ensure you’re across any changes to SMSF rules and regulations so that your fund remains compliant. After all, even if you engage professionals to help you along the way, the management of your SMSF ultimately rests with you. There is a lot to think about when deciding whether you should take your super into your own hands, so please call Provision Wealth Management on (07) 5447 7740 if you would like to discuss. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. news Cooroy Computers has moved!

COOROY RAG

AFTER taking over Cooroy Computers nearly 2 years ago, owners William & Caroline decided it was time for a scenery change. They have moved the local computer shop closer to town. It is now located at Shop 4, 1A Garnet Street Cooroy. William & Caroline are very happy with their new location. Garnet Place is the name of the building which they have moved into. It is located behind Bendigo Bank just as you come off the roundabout at Maple Street and opposite the Cooroy Hotel. “The existing businesses located here have been very welcoming and friendly” William said. Customers are happy with the new location too. Many are glad to see the stairs go and be replaced with a beautiful Poinciana tree out the front. William & Caroline still provide all the same great services in their new location, ranging from simple fixes of little problems on your computer

up to complete re-installations of Windows and any Mac problems you may have. They plan to extend their stock range in-store to include more of the everyday things people need. William uses the old ‘teach a man to fish’ method to help people with their technology. “As computers are getting more complicated people feel like they are getting left behind and I don’t want to see that happen. My desire is to teach people about their computers and devices so that they know how to do what they want to do on them.” William is continuing to build PC’s that cater to people’s needs. He especially enjoys designing and building gaming PC’s. “I know that there is a bit of a gaming community scattered across Cooroy and as a gamer it’s my desire to see them taken care of when it comes to performance.” With a great new shop in a more accessible location, William & Caroline are ready to help you in 2017 and hopefully far into the future.

Ron awarded life membership for contribution to Cooroy Tennis 1998. He translated approximately the previous 12 months of book entries into spread sheets to clarify the accuracy of the inherited figures with bank statements etc in the lead up to his book keeping. Ron has carried out the duties over the past 18 years, through simple times to more and more complex accounting requirements. When the club replaced courts 1 and 2 in 2005 and courts 3 and 4 in 2009, Ron was tasked with introducing GST to our accounts, because the size of loans and grants received took us over the GST free level. In addition Ron had to account for the capitalisation of, and annual depreciation of, the new assets being created. These were not insignificant requirements that Ron took on and achieved. The Cooroy Tennis Committee unanimously decided to offer Ron Phillips life membership in recognition of his tremendous contribution over 18 years. Ron first became involved with the Cooroy Tennis Club as a result of his daughter keeping her horse in the paddock adjacent to the tennis courts as suggested by a well-known local at the time believing it was part of the showground area. They received a letter from the Club advising them that they were keeping the horse in their grounds without receiving authority to do so. They were given the option of either paying agistment for the use of the paddock, or take out a family membership. Ron took out a family membership on 28 February 1998, and there started his involvement with the Club. He recalls that he must have attended the 1998 AGM and landed the job of Treasurer, and he says –”the rest is history”. And what a history! His first records started from 1 November

Ron produced annual financial statements, had them audited and presented to an AGM each year, on time, without issues of consequence requiring action, and then submitting them in an Annual Return to Government. Ron’s health has declined and over the past 3 or 4 years but his commitment to the Club has not wavered. The Club, its members and all who enjoy the great facilities, which now comprise our tennis centre owe a debt of gratitude to Ron for his part in its development.

Brian Jones, Trevor Bunney, Derek Stevenson and Marlene Strudwick cooking up a storm at the Cooroy Probus Club Australia Day function.

Marlene and Ron Strudwick thanking guest speakers David Lane and his offsider Sam from the Ambulance Service, after our recent Cooroy Probus meeting.

We are back in action! The PROBUS Club of Cooroy has begun their 2017 activities with an Australia Day celebration that both tested the ageing brain cells and pleased the palate. Entertainment was based on ‘ Who wants to be a Millionaire’ organised and orchestrated by our own quiz master, Trevor Blake. Working in groups so as not to embarrass anyone, the questions created much discussion, a few puzzled looks and amazingly, many correct answers. Due to an obscure scoring system that pleased the treasurer for the day, very few teams reached the millionaire status! Our reward for participation was a BBQ feast tasty meats, wonderful salads and delicious salads all washed down with quality wine - Australian of course. A big thank you to all who contributed. Great job. Anyone wanting to learn more about the Cooroy PROBUS club can contact John on 5485 0415 or come along to a meeting held at 10 am on the first Monday of each month in the Anglican Church hall, Miva Street, Cooroy.

THE Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) is embarking on a brand new program this February. ‘Find a Frog in February’ is a citizen science program that encourages all people to get outside, find frogs and send their information in to the MRCCC. The area covered by the program is from Burrum Heads to Peregian, west to Mt Walsh and Kilkivan and east to the coast, including Fraser Island. This area includes the Mary, Noosa and Burrum River catchments and all the coastal streams and wetlands. It is supported by the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie Councils and the Burnet Mary Regional Group – a fantastic collective contribution. We have over frog 40 species that live within this area and 10 of these are either extinct or threatened, mainly due to habitat loss and disease. Frogs can be the ‘canary in the coal mine’; telling us of changes

in our ecosystems, from rainforests, to wallum and urban areas. We need to know more about the whereabouts of many species across this broad area so we can better look after them. ‘Initially we are aiming for 1000 sightings’ Eva Ford from the MRCCC said, ‘and then we can aim even higher!’ ‘We can identify the frogs from photographs, recordings of calls or good descriptions’ Eva said. We need the information to be reliable so it can be used with great certainty. The information is all stored in the State Government’s WildNet database where it can be accessed by researchers, planners and members of the public. Full details available at www.mrccc.org.au/find-a-frog-infebruary-citizen-science/ or email the MRCCC at admin@mrccc.org.au or phone on 07 5482 4766.

High Flyer

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student Nina Burkardt took a tour of the Qantas hangers and heavy maintenance facilities two weeks ago as part of her runner up prize for the Year 11 Qantas Quest Award, which is run through the Aerospace Gateways Schools program. Nina is now officially a licensed pilot and is allowed to take passengers; flying and landing in controlled air spaces. Goals, including working towards obtaining a commercial license and aerobatics flying, are on the agenda for Nina this term.

NDSHS Swimming Carnival The Noosa District State High School senior campus swimming carnival was a great success, with students enjoying the steamy, very humid day at the Nambour Aquatic Centre, participating in a number of events to earn points for their house. The event was well attended with many students and staff keen to escape the heat with a refreshing swim. The students thoroughly appreciated a fun, new addition to this year’s carnival: an inflatable obstacle course race, where house points were allocated to the winner from a competitive duel. Students also took part in a variety of swimming heats, with those with the fastest times invited to compete in the upcoming regional swimming competition. Best dressed events and house war cries also showcased many students’ competitive streaks. The outright house winner of the swimming carnival will be announced once all the points are tallied at an upcoming full school parade.

Making an Impression

Forest, eco-print by Michele Knightley INSPIRED by their local natural environment at Boreen point, artists Michele Knightley and Margaret Moon have been tuning in to the beauty that nature provides. Their latest artworks combine the mediums of printmaking, ecodyeing drawing and bookbinding. The practice of contact printing with plants, also known as eco-dyeing, draws pigments directly from the leaves to make a print on either fabric or paper. Michele’s love of native plants has inspired lots of experimental printmaking with leaves she collects locally at Boreen Point. A retired teacher, Margaret brings her passion for learning and teaching to the eco dye workshops and a lifelong love of drawing, printing and watercolour. A collection of their works will be on show at the Pomona Railway Gallery from February 24 till March 29, including a workshop teaching the eco-dye method on March 4th. The gallery is open seven days; weekdays 10-4; S-S 10-2. tel 5485 2950

As part of the festival the Line Dance Association of Australia holds their annual Australian Line Dance Championships. All the hard work and practice paid off,” said Cathy. “A huge thank you also must go to Kristine Ditchfield School of Dance for the use of her studio to practise getting those lines and steps perfect.” For more information about line dance classes in Cooroy, Tinbeerwah, Pomona & Gympie please contact Cathy on 0414 951 207. But her prim and proper virginal ways do not fit in and she soon finds herself quite alone. A change must be made. Does she attempt to get her man by turning him into a jock? Or must she get rid of her “Sandra Dee” image? THE Ocean Film Festival Australia is set to make a splash as it tours the country in March. Australian audiences will be able to immerse themselves in the wonders of the ocean without getting their feet wet this March as the Ocean Film Festival Australia hits cinemas across the country. The festival, which features 7 of the world’s most captivating ocean-themed short films, (6 Australian Cinematic Premiers) will light up silver screens in 20 towns and cities. Designed to mesmerise and enthral, the Ocean Film Festival Australia showcases more than two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. The films document the beauty and power of the ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, sailors, rowers, swimmers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue. The films feature captivating cinematography, complete with awe-inspiring underwater scenes and fast-paced wave sequences that have been captured from unbelievable vantage points. Mesmerising images of schooling fish, colourful coral gardens and jellyfish blooms are complemented with up-close footage of curious marine creatures

such as seals, dolphins, turtles and whales. Join us on a journey from New Zealand to Patagonia via Antarctica with a ragtag crew of sailors, probe a foreign world where man is no longer the dominant force, track the survival of humpback whales in New Zealand with some salty old seadogs and battle the temperamental North Atlantic winds to surf the frigid shores of Iceland. Together we will take a deep breath and explore the hidden world of Europe’s largest wreck and take on one of the toughest ocean endurance challenges on the planet with four unexpected world record holders. Inspiring and thought-provoking, the Ocean Film Festival Australia is filled with moving footage, touching interviews and insightful narrations. Each of the festival’s films conveys a deep respect and appreciation for the world’s oceans and the creatures that call them home. Defibrillator grants for life NOOSACARE Inc has recently become the proud owners of two defibrillators, one at Kabara in Cooroy and the other at Carramar in Tewantin. An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) conforms to the basic life support algorithm. In an emergency every second becomes vital. Having an onsite defibrillator means increasing the chance of survival for anyone that has suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest. Megan D’Elton CEO of Noosacare Inc said : “The AED allows trained staff to perform quick defibrillation meaning an increased survival rate for patients until Ambulance officers arrive.” These life saving devices have been received as part of a grant from the Queensland Government and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant. The fund was established to assist community groups and oraganisations such as Noosacare to meet the needs of local communities. Megan commented “As Noosacare Inc is a Community owned not for profit organisation, we are really appreciative of all the support we receive to purchase such valuable medical equipment”.

Difficulty falling or staying asleep? INSOMNIA (difficulty falling or staying asleep) can affect anyone at any age and aside from making life unpleasant also carries significant health risks. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says research shows those getting less than seven hours of sleep (for just one night or many) will likely experience irritability, fatigue or poor memory. If you or someone you know is having trouble sleeping, it’s important to get some support.

There are natural medicines that can help promote quality sleep at night, without leaving you feeling groggy during the day. Jodie finds the following herbs helpful in restoring a sound night’s sleep. 1) Passionflower: extracts made from the leaves and flowers are rich in flavonoids and have been traditionally used in Western herbal medicine for insomnia. 2) Jamaica dogwood: traditionally used in South America and the West Indies for nerve pain, anxiety and nervous tension; this herb promotes relaxation & reduces pain that may be disturbing sleep. 3) Zizyphus: this herb has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, and is used to treat insomnia due to nervous tension or anxiety. 4) Lavender: improves both the quality and duration of sleep, without causing unwanted sedative effects; particularly beneficial for those kept awake by worrying thoughts. 5) Magnesium: technically magnesium is not a herb, but it made this list due to it’s many benefits including supporting healthy nervous

system function so you are less affected by stress; it can also help relax sore muscles that may be disturbing sleep. Quality sleep is not a luxury: it is a necessity. Some tips for getting a lifestyle that supports quality sleep include: Reduce (or eliminate) stimulants like caffeine and sugar; exercise regularly; go to bed at the same time each night; limit alcohol consumption; practice relaxation exercises at bedtime; avoid screen time an hour before bed; try a few minutes of relaxation or meditation. Identifying the underlying causes of disturbed sleep is the first step. If you are finding it difficult to overcome this problem a qualified health practitioner can help to create a treatment plan to restore a healthy sleep pattern. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. HERE are some important dietary tips to keep your engine running: Don’t set unrealistic goals and starve yourself. Make changes slowly such as adding a salad to your meal or switching from butter to cholesterol free oil when cooking. If you skip meals, you may find you eat more when you do eat and this may lead to a larger stomach capacity! Reduce portion size – use smaller plates at home, order entrée size when dining out or split a dish with a friend. Meat, fish and chicken should be the size of the palm of your hand. Create new eating habits –Eat with others and NOT in front of TV, take time to chew your food as it can take a few minutes for your brain to recognize you’re full. Ask yourself if you are really hungry and try having a glass of water before your start your meal. Use a small fork; it takes longer to eat, therefore the “full” signal occurs before we finish our meal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it will give your metabolism a kick-start for the day. Eat 3 healthy meals daily, with small additional snacks in between to keep energy levels up and boost the metabolism. Some examples of good “snacks” include raw nuts/seeds, fresh/dried fruit, low-fat yoghurt & vegetable sticks with low fat dip. Fill up on fruit and vegetables – these are the foundation of a healthy diet and should be in every meal. Aim for at least 5 portions per day. Avoid fruit juice and canned fruit as they have high amounts of sugar. Water is a vital part of a healthy diet. It helps flush out waste products and toxins. Try to eat HEALTHY carbohydrates as they provide longer-lasting energy and keep you fuller for longer as they are digested slowly. These include whole-grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Try to avoid unhealthy carbohydrates such as white flour, sugar and rice; these are digested quickly and cause a rapid spike in energy and

blood sugar levels that don’t last. Dietary fibre is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system, and makes you feel fuller for longer. Good sources of fibre are beans, fruit and oat products. Include good sources of healthy fats in the form of omega-3 as they are needed to nourish the brain and heart. Sources include salmon, avocados, nuts and seeds. Reduce or limit saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found primarily in animal sources (red meat and whole milk dairy products) and trans fats and found in margarines, chips, biscuits, snack food, fried foods, and other processed foods. Protein is important as it gives us energy and is the basic building block for our growth and energy. Limit your sugar consumption. Sugar causes rapid spikes in energy that don’t last. Avoid sugary drinks (e.g. Cola drinks) as they can contain about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Salt should be used sparingly (no more than 4 grams of salt daily - i.e. 1600mg sodium). This will help to avoid fluid retention and bloating and can also decrease blood pressure. Canned soups and frozen meals contain hidden salts that surpass the recommended daily allowance. Avoid alcohol –contains lots of calories and puts strain on your liver. And don’t forget to include some fun exercise into your day! Exercise boosts the metabolism and allows for more calories to be burnt. It is recommended that exercise is undertaken 5 days a week and for a duration of 30-60 minutes. The Australian Heart Foundation recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on all or most days of the week. This can be accumulated in bouts of 10 minutes or more if more convenient. Exercise can be aerobic (walking, swimming, running, riding, jogging, skipping, hiking etc) or anaerobic (weight training or sprinting). Jacqueline Kiel B.Pharm MPS, LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy

Heat stroke symptoms and first aid DID you know heat stroke can result in permanent brain damage or death? Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition because the body’s temperature can rise far above normal to the point where it stops sweating. The body essentially loses its ability to control temperature, and, if left untreated, it can damage the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. Heat stroke usually results from prolonged exposure to a hot, humid, and perhaps poorly ventilated environment. The longer the delay in getting treatment, the higher the risk. Those more likely to suffer from heat stroke are the elderly, and people with poor health, and infants or small children. The second form of heat stroke, known as exertional heat stroke, sees the body temperature rise rapidly due to heavy physical exertion in high temperatures, even though sweating continues. This definition will become important when recognizing the symptoms of heat stroke. As the temperature rises, it’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat stroke; not to be confused with a fever. • Body temperature rapidly rises to 40°C or higher – the person is distinctly hot to the touch; The pulse is rapid and full but gets weaker in later stages • Breathing may be noisy; Skin is hot and dry in classic heat stroke and flushed. In exertional heat stroke, the skin is hot and sweaty • Casualty is restless and may complain of a headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea; Vomiting, convulsions, or unconsciousness. Heat stroke can also be easily confused with heat exhaustion. Just remember, in heat stroke, the skin is hot and flushed and may be dry or wet. Heat exhaustion occurs when someone is exposed to high temperatures which prompt

The person’s life may well depend on how quickly this can be done. • Move them to a cool, shaded place • Begin cooling the person. Remove outer clothing and cover them with wet sheets and fan the sheets to increase cooling • Place ice packs covered in tea towels (or similar) on the armpits, neck, and groin areas • When their body feels cool to the touch, cover them with a dry sheet. Monitor them closely. If their temperature begins to rise again, repeat the cooling process. If they are conscious, place them in a supine position (on their back) with both legs elevated. If they are unconscious, move them into the recovery position • Provide the person with water or drinks (preferably isotonic sports drinks that contain electrolytes). Do not attempt to provide any form of solid food • Continue to provide ongoing care until medical help arrives.

Bed 4; Bath 2; Car 4; 83.1 acres Price: Offers over $1,095,000. This grand Queenslander is quite simply, magnificent, “the jewel in the crown.” A divine private oasis on 83 acres just a few minutes from the Village of Cooran. Boasting uninterrupted panoramic views - and a range of living and working options. Set at the end of a long winding driveway, this gorgeous property is picture-perfect, offering total peace and privacy. The breathtaking views take in Pinbarren Mountain, Pomona Mountain, Cooroy Mountain, Cooran Mountain, Mount Eerwah, Mount Coolum and Kenilworth Bluff. Comprised of prime grazing land, the property has been home to 40 cows and calves, and is set up with cattle yards, crush, race and ramp. Set amidst rolling green hills, with easy access to the Noosa Trail Network, the property would be ideal for equine enthusiasts. A house yard plus 5 paddocks offer several grazing options, whilst 3 dams and a creek provide plenty of water for stock. The home itself is sensational! Beautifully maintained and renovated, it offers a versatile floor plan with many original features, including French doors, stained glass fanlights, ginger bread, VJ walls and ceilings, claw foot bath, many original doors and windows, and soaring 11ft ceilings. The bathroom and kitchen have been sensitively renovated, in keeping with the traditional country Queenslander style. The home is largely carpeted, with original, wide, hoop pine floorboards still in place, should you wish to revert to polished timber flooring. Built over 100 years ago, this elegant homestead is sure to attract plenty of

guests and housing them won’t be a problem. The current owners hosted 15 family members for 4 days last Christmas! There are 2 bedrooms upstairs plus a formal lounge, separate formal dining room, family room, a large sleep-out/office, and informal dining in the kitchen. The downstairs section - added when the home was moved to this site in 1994 - offers 2 large bedrooms, another bathroom and the laundry. And if you need even more accommodation, there’s also a 3room donga in the grounds. The endless list of amazing features here also includes security screens on the front and back doors; a beautiful butterfly staircase; wraparound verandahs on 3 sides; 1.5 kw solar power; a large 4-bay shed plus an old farm shed; fruit trees, and even air-conditioning. And did we mention those never-ending, breathtaking views? In fact, there’s a view out of every window in this property - even the loo! The current owners have loved living here, describing the views as “different every day” and the sky as “magical”, as it turns from red to bright gold at sunset. And as for the stars . . . Offering so much space and privacy, the home has been loved by the owners’ children and grand children - especially as it is only 30 minutes from the beach. The gorgeous village of Cooran is just down the road, with a train station, shops, restaurant, cafe, sports oval and school. Location, lifestyle, space, privacy and convenience - it’s all here. This rare find is quite simply, Wow! Wow! Wow! To inspect call Sam Hargrave 0425 777 121 or Phil Hargrave 0417 750 507, from Hargrave Real Estate

Legends vs All Stars match draws huge crowd of League fans

THEY might not hit quite as hard as they used to, but the ‘legends’ can still put on an entertaining spectacle. Despite the scorching heat the Legends of League exhibition match attracted the biggest crowd the Noosa grounds has ever seen with over 3500 rugby league fans turning up at Pirate Park eager to see their past heroes strap the boots on one more time. Twenty Sunshine Butterflies lead the Legends team onto the park and one of the highlights of the game was when young Alec Weatherall, a young Down Syndrome player for the All Stars, delighted the crowd with a full length try.

sport

The game finished with the Legends just beating the All Stars with the final score 24-20, but at the end of the day the result wasn’t what brought the fans out. There was a good mix of old and not-so-old guys out there and they definitely know how to entertain the crowd. Event organiser Troy Byers was delighted by the turnout to Saturday main event. “It was great for the Juniors and Seniors to come together to promote and support each other, and is ultimately great for Rugby League,” said Troy.

THERE was a lot of excitement around town with the recent Legends of League promotional events. Cooroy RSL hosted a group of the players for lunch and patrons were able to meet them in a relaxed atmosphere. Players who visited the club were Nathan Blacklock, Craig Teevan, Stu Kelly, Ewan McGrady, Craig Wilson, Noel Goldthorpe and Scott Hill. Cooroy RSL gave away several free tickets to the Corporate Box to watch the feature games on Saturday.

Junior Cougar Cricketers hitting sixes towards the end of a great season! Anytime Fitness, a sponsor of the Legends of League pictured at their Boot Camp they held with Robbie O’Davis on game day. Wendy and staff say they learnt a few new training techniques on the day.
