AS far as opportunities in furthering a career in business is concerned, it really doesn’t get any better than this. Two Noosa District State High School Year 12 students have been given the chance to sit on a local board of directors who manage a multi-million dollar business, and they’re pretty excited. Taylor Diessel and Michael Twitt share a keen interest in business and this month were appointed as Junior Observers for 2016 on a board that manages one of few publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin and the Bendigo Bank agency in Pomona. Since 2008, these same Community Bank branches have combined to give back more than $1.7 million to community groups, schools and organisations right across our region. The branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capi-

(l-r) SCCFSL Chairman, Rick Cooper is joined by 2016 junior directors Taylor Deissel, Michael Twitt and Cooroy and Pomona Manager, Geoff Edwards tal, ensuring more money stays in the area for local investment. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at Cooroy Library - and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at the school each June, Taylor and

Michael were made aware of a program where they could attend each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how community banking works on a boardroom level. It’s a big step in the right direction in the development of any career and they have seen firsthand how it can lead to a great job - maybe even close to home.

“I know I speak for Michael in saying how happy we are to have been given this opportunity,” Taylor said. “The SCCFSL board is filled with directors who have years of experience and great success in the business world and they’re really lovely people too. They’re all actively involved in their community and keen to pass on their knowledge.

“It’s a great head start to learn how a board works and also to learn more about the important part the Community Bank branches play in Cooroy, Marcoola, Tewantin and Pomona’s future. It’s just amazing how much time and money the branches have invested in our communities already for all our benefit,” Taylor added.

THE Noosa District State High School Student Council will be fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation by hosting a Shave For A Cure event in March. Students and staff will be able to support the event either through sponsoring a friend/staff member or by nominating to have their hair shaved off or coloured. The Student Council are also calling for hairdresser volunteers within the local community to assist with the shaving/colouring of student and staff member’s hair during a lunch time. Australian Ambassador shines at award ceremony

BOTANICAL PARADISE

3 Leatherwood Lane, BLACK MOUNTAIN

With Cr Sandy Bolton

Clinton Stanley

Clinton with Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Warren Truss THE weather and the move to the Noosa J didn’t dampen the spirits of the people attending the Noosa Citizen Ceremony. It was a packed venue with over 60 new citizens participating in the ceremony. The Master of Ceremonies Mr Ian Mackay welcomed everyone before the Noosa Chorale sang a range of Australian songs that inspired everyone in the room.

Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon.Warren Truss told everyone, “When you think about the achievements of our country we dedicate ourselves also to being good citizens and doing what we can to help make our country a better place to live. This was followed by the introduction of the Australian Ambassador, Cooroy’s Clinton Stanley. An inspirational swimmer known as Cooroy’s “Super Fish”, Clinton has been world champion across a range of events including the 1500 metres freestyle. Clinton has represented Australia seven times. Clinton was also an Australian of the Year 2013 Queensland Award Finalist and received an Outstanding Lifesaving Award. Clinton is a recipient of the Baden Powell Award the highest award for scout-

ing. He has received the 2000 Australia Sports medal and was inducted into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot said he was very proud to have Clinton as Aussie Ambassador and delighted to be able to share with his friend his last Aussie Day Citizenship ceremony before retiring after more than 30 years in council. This was Clinton’s second time as Ambassador, last year his duties were in the Ipswich Region. After the official swearing in of the new citizens, Clinton was thrilled to hand out Australian native trees to all the new Aussie citizens. The day couldn’t be complete without a thank you to Noosa Rotary and Noosa Tewantin Lions Clubs for their wonderful support.

Contract awarded for Cooroy to Curra Section C CPB Contractors has been awarded the contract for the Cooroy to Curra Section C project which will see the Bruce Highway widened to four lanes between the Traveston interchange and the proposed Woondum interchange, south of Gympie. Deputy Prime Minister , Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development and Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said the new four-lane highway will address safety and capacity issues on this section of the Bruce Highway. “The Cooroy to Curra Section C project will improve safety and provide travel time savings for freight and passenger vehicles, as well as providing savings on infrastructure operating costs,” Mr Truss said. “The improvements will also help minimise disruptions and road closures due to flooding.

“Section C is the third of four major Bruce Highway - Cooroy to Curra upgrade projects, with Section A from the Cooroy Southern interchange to Sankey’s Road well underway, and Section B between Federal and Traveston completed in 2012. “The Australian Government is also committed to progressing the Section D project on planning and design work for upgrading the section of the highway stretching from south of Keefton Road to Curra. “Work on Section C is expected to start in coming weeks and to be completed by mid2018, weather permitting.” Queensland Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the assessment process for the Section C works contract focused on ensuring the successful tenderer

had a strong record in delivering major infrastructure projects. “Over the next few weeks CPB Contractors will establish equipment and staff at the construction site,” Mr Bailey said. “The majority of work will occur off the highway and have minimal impacts on traffic flows. “The Section C early works project, which involves safety upgrades on the existing highway between Woondum and Venardos Avenue, is progressing well and is expected to be complete by mid-2016 weather permitting.” The $384.24 million Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra - Section C project is jointly funded with the Australian Government providing up to $307.4 million and the Queensland Government $76.84 million.

FOLLOWING on from a community meeting last year attended by over 100 people, a second meeting of 35 people at the Cooroy Library on this month has resulted in the formation of the Cooroy Community Memorial Hall Action Group. The main purpose of this group is to work with the Cooroy RSL who are the current custodians of the hall; State and Local Government; and other parties, with the ultimate aim of getting the Cooroy Memorial Hall re-opened after its closure in December last year. The Cooroy Memorial Hall was closed for insurance purposes due to the general condition of the building. This was a devastating loss for Cooroy as the hall was used for wide variety of activities such as the Blue Light Disco, community meetings, Thursday markets,

community groups from tap dancers to the permaculture group, Anzac Day celebrations and the annual Cooroora Woodworkers event, to name just a few. At the meeting this week a smaller action group was formed and is made up of community members Warren O’Neill, Paul Kluck, Carol Christensen, Harry Kirk, Soraya McLean, Wayne Schrader and Seb Vecchio. This group aims to work with all the stakeholders to look at ways to get Cooroy’s iconic building open to the public as soon as practical. “This isn’t going to be a quick process but the Action Group give our undertaking to continue to work at it and push for it to happen as soon as practicable. The Cooroy RSL which is the current cus-

todian of the hall are in the process of relinquishing this control back to the State Government. It is the action group’s preferred option that State Government would then transfer it to Noosa Council. That process is going to take time and we will continue to liaise with all the relevant government bodies to be a voice for the community in this matter,” said Cooroy Community Memorial Hall Action Group spokesperson, Seb Vecchio. A Cooroy Community Memorial Hall Action Group Facebook page has been set up which will be updated with progress the group has achieved. Go to www.facebook.com/CooroyHall for information or to provide feedback or suggestions.

The Archive contains only a small proportion of the Australian web domain estimated at less than one per cent and only online publications

All of the information on the website is about our town and that will now be in the national archives,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce started the Cooroy website 10 years ago as a community initiative and it has always been very popular. The site has undergone several transformations over the years to become the fan-

Help give mosquitoes the flick COUNCIL is urging residents to help put the bite on mosquitoes following recent heavy rain. Noosa Council Waste and Environmental Health Manager Wayne Schafer said the wet weather and hot temperatures made for ideal breeding conditions. While Council treated known local mosquito breeding sites, such as tidal areas and swamps, residents could help put the brakes on mosquitoes by removing fresh and stagnant water from their yards. “Some mosquitoes breed efficiently after rainfall, especially the common banded mosquito (Culex annulirostris), the most common in south east Queensland,” Mr Schafer says. “This mosquito breeds in shallow freshwater pools as well as in grassy drains and depressions in rural areas or suburbs with open space, which includes most of Noosa Shire. These mosquitoes are known to carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans and pets.” Mosquitoes will breed in almost any site or container holding water, in most locations including in backyards. Places they breed include: • Unused tyres • Bromeliad plants • Water features

Page 4 - Cooroy Rag, February 17, 2016

• Ditches • Gutters • Car bodies • Ponds • Neglected swimming pools • Bird baths • Unscreened rainwater tanks or tanks with damaged screens • Buckets and containers • Blocked roof gutters • Boats • Pot plant bases • Drains Mr Schafer urged all residents to regularly flush out ponds and bird baths and remove areas where stagnant water could collect to eliminate breeding sites. He also urged the use of repellents, light clothing to cover arms and legs, and keeping screen doors and windows closed. Council began its annual aerial treatment of salt marsh breeding sites focusing on species that transmit Ross River and Barmah Forest Fever on February 1 across the Noosa Shire, to reduce mosquito larval populations following the recent heavy rain. Australia Day What did you think of Australia Day, was it as intended, a day of enjoyment, Or was it a time of confusion, a day of disappointment? There were so many things brought up, which had no place in the festivity, Australia Day seemed only to be a small part of the activity. We were lectured about the Queen, the Republic, the Governor General, The footy, the cricket, gender equality, many matters presidential. A candidate representing Queensland, lived in Canberra the last forty years or so, Although he was born in Queensland, all that long ago. But when she didn’t win the top award, She criticised the decision and also members of the board. Later she apologized, which was only fair, and right, Though stirring up the problem wasn’t very bright. Perhaps the time is ripe for someone to explain, What Australia Day really means, in language plain, It’s not for people anxious for self-recognition, I feel that last year’s winner Rosie Batty was a good selection. She walked the long, sad walk, And courageously talked the talk. She spoke from the heart, and through it all, She gave her moving message, and stood very tall. So please, next year could our Australia Day feature, Someone whose worth is quite clear, Someone whose value is not known because it is quietly concealed, Someone who is taken aback, when that worth is revealed.

It is a great privilege to live, to work, to feel, to endure, to know, to love, and to be loved Jim Dunstan

A message from Sandy: Having lived, worked and raised my children alongside you for the past 20 years, I feel privileged to be part of this wonderful community. As a Councillor, I have been committed to good outcomes and initiatives that provide opportunities for our future. As Mayor, I will further this work through five achievable policies. These will resolve historical issues such as the Myall St intersection, create local jobs, and build a Planning Scheme and Transport Strategy that reflects your needs. Most importantly, I will ensure your dollar works hard to improve service delivery, and keep rates to a minimum. I listen, I care deeply, and together we will get things done. Warmest regards,

Insurance needn’t be a traumatic choice Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy AS tough financial times continue, people remain cautious about many financial matters. Through my work I regularly listen to some of these concerns, particularly about the security a customers’ income. Some of the concern is around employment and the security of their job or possible reduced hours. Another is the perceived lack of alternative employment options should they wish or have to change employers or career paths. We tend to insure our home, cars and housing contents. However, we aren’t aware or simply don’t often tend to insure one of our most vital assets - our income. Take Personal Risk Insurance for example. What is it? Personal Risk Insurance comes in a number of forms but essentially it is an insurance policy that is taken out to cover an individual in the event they suffer from a serious illness, an injury or death. This includes Income Protection Insurance, Total and Permanent / Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance and the most commonly known, Life Insurance. Income Insurance is also becoming more and more important these days. This type of insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Most policies can cover up to 75% of your before tax income and it is paid directly to you the customer. They don’t pay it directly to banks or real-estate agents etc. There is generally a waiting period which means it does not cover people for short term illnesses such as mild cases of the flu or an absenteeism of 23 days. More and more people are now being encouraged to look at Income Insurance for a number of reasons, including: • A heavy reliance on two incomes to service

bank debts and lifestyle. What happens if one of the incomes suddenly disappears? • Insufficient savings or “back-up” options should income cease. • An increase in statistics around likelihood of ill health before the age of 65. • An increase in statistics around serious illness such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. The topic of Income Protection Insurance is a big one. Some people may already have some limited coverage through their employee superannuation. Additionally premiums paid for these policies often can have tax advantages. My advice is to speak with a professional Financial Planner who can listen to your needs and then advise you of your options. Next time, I’ll go into more detail about Trauma Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Life Insurance. If you have any questions about insurance of any kind, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Sandy Bolton - 20 years of our past, and five actions for our future

THE mayoral race is starting to heat up, and after two decades local resident Sandy Bolton is more than ready to take on the task of tackling the long term issues that have affected our communities, and turn our challenges into opportunities “I look back to when I first arrived and set up the Kin Kin Village Voice. Strong and united communities are key to achieving outcomes, and nothing has changed,” Cr Bolton said. As a Councillor, Sandy has taken her 35 years of business and community experience and put them into delivering for rural

Noosa. “I set out with a broad list of commitments at election time, and have worked on these continuously over the last three years. Increasing community consultation was one of the essentials, and between the development of the Council Roadshow, online forum and sector reference groups, there has been good progress,” she said. Sandy has been known in the community for ‘looking outside the square’ for solutions to some of our issues. “In my first two months as a Councillor, I collated requests and documents from groups such as the

Hinterland Alliance to get a good understanding of what was needed for our rural residents,” she said. “The summary was an ‘action plan’ of some 60 items to tackle, including a country tourist loop, the sealing of Dr Pages Rd, and Noosa Made branding. From the original list, over 80% have been completed, in progress, submitted for budget consideration or part of the development of the new Planning scheme and Transport Strategy,” said Cr Bolton. Developing her policies, or ‘actions’ as she calls them, was not difficult as they are a continuance of the work she has been focused on not only as a Councillor, but as a member of regional advisory and working committees. “As Chair of Infrastructure and Services, I understand what is needed going forward in the delivery of safe roads and essential services, and to deal with those historical ‘hotspots’ of Myall and the Elm/Diamond intersection. I have no hesitation in saying l can get

these done,” she said. As the Councillor known for driving the Local Economic Plan, and working on future local job creation, what does Cr Bolton see going forward for our rural areas? “A great future, and it has already started. Building the profile and capacity of the ‘Noosa Made and Grown’ brand and the Country Noosa Drive, and developing further unique experiences and product is the base. “Opportunities are everywhere, and I have enjoyed testing new products from our country folk including the Eco-Bee wraps and the Noosa Organics skincare range,” said Cr Bolton. Outside of her Councillor role, Sandy has built networks and partnerships to work on job creation, skills development and education. “The Employment & Training Group has been a great start, and with over 30 stakeholders involved, has been instrumental in developing partnerships for key actions including re-

searching Social Enterprise as a way to achieve environmental, economic and social outcomes,” she said. A final note? “For me, policies are just words unless they can be achievable actions. I have just five, which are all essential to deliver what is important to our communities, and when completed, will resolve a number of current issues. It is about the whole picture. We need jobs to look after our families, our environment and our community. We need safe roads and infrastructure, and a Transport Strategy that alleviates and prevents issues and provides access. We need a planning scheme that promotes good outcomes and alleviates conflict. We want a good lifestyle, where caring, respect and listening to one other’s points of views, as well as seeking solutions, are part of our social wellbeing. We can achieve anything, through our business, environmental and community sectors working together.”

TOO hot and crowded at the beach? Why not pack a picnic and head for the hills to find a waterfall … preferably one with a swimming hole to cool down in. 1. Gardner Falls, Maleny As well as a beautiful waterfall in a bush setting there’s a wide and deep swimming hole with two rope swings for adventure seekers and crazy kids. It’s only a short walk to the waterfall and there’s a small grassy area where you can have a picnic. Gardner Falls is popular with locals and young people so it gets busy. It’s best to get there early in the morning so you can park nearby and enjoy the waterfall before it gets too crowded. You can swim in the big natural swimming pool, have a go on the little rope swing at the bottom end of Gardner Falls or wade across the stream upriver of the falls to try the big rope swing. 2. Kondalilla Falls Not too far from Montville, Kondalilla Falls National Park has some beautiful bush

walks as well as a small but perfectly formed waterfall. There’s a walking track to Kondalilla Falls from the carpark which is a 5km circuit. It’s downhill all the way there but be prepared to tackle a lot of steps on the way back to the car park. If you want to make a

day of it you can take a picnic and feast al fresco in the grassy area at just by the car park. There are sheltered picnic tables and loos there too. 3. Booloumba Falls Located in Kenilworth State Forest you can reach these Booloumba Falls by following Sunday

Creek Road 7Km past Kenilworth and turning right at the Booloumba Creek picnic and camping areas. Booloumba Falls are a 3Km walk from the top parking area and there’s a big rock pool above the falls which is great for swimming. Booloumba Falls is popular with the locals and can get busy on weekends but it’s no where near as popular as Gardner Falls. 4. Buderim Forest Waterfall The Buderim State Forest Park has some great walks with a small waterfall and pool where you could have a quick dip or paddle. Buderim State Forest Park is only 1km from Buderim Village but it’s a good spot for bird spotting, a green fix and time out from the hustle and bustle of the coast. There are two ways to get to the Buderim Falls. The lower entry is off Lindsay Road with another entrance at Quorn Close, either of which will give you a lovely short walk to the falls. 5. Mapleton Falls

Mapleton Falls National Park is part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, a 58 km walking track with overnight campsites, but don’t let that put you off. Couch potatoes can still enjoy Mapleton Falls because there’s a great look out just 50m from the Mapleton Falls National Park carpark. 6. Wappa Falls Like Gardner Falls, Wappa Falls has a nice big waterfall and swimming hole. It’s only a short walk round the rocks from the Wappa Dam car park. There are all kinds of warning signs about swimming at Wappa Falls because people have died here jumping off high rocks or swimming when the river is in flood. Exercise caution and you’ll have lots of good clean fun at Wappa Falls. 7. Artists Cascades Also in the Conondale National Park just outside Kennilworth, Artists Cascades is an 11km walk to get to the falls which keeps out the crowds but the rainforest is lush and the walk is mostly shady.

COOROY RAG

Vale: Alice Kay (29-6-1926 - 20-1-2016) ALICE Kay, Allie to all who knew her, was born in a private hospital at Pomona almost ninety years ago. She lived in Cooran during her early childhood with her mother and father Ida and Norman Lewis. Ida was a warm, charming woman whose paternal grandparents emigrated from Scotland and settled in Gympie. Norman Lewis could trace his ancestry in Australia back to the Second Fleet. He worked at Straker’s sawmill. A tall, sensitive man he came home to Cooran and married Ida after four years fighting in WW1. He fought on the Somme battlefields, Villers Bretonneux and Poziers, then in Ypres as a tunneler at Hill 60 and at the battle of Passchendaele. Allie said his experiences there had an effect on him for the rest of his life. In spite of a long stay in hospital with rheumatic fever when she was three, Allie had a carefree and happy childhood. An only child, she be-

came great friends with Joan Atkins the girl next door, and they remained friends their whole lives. She was a good tennis player, loved music, piano lessons and ballroom dancing. A redhead like some of her Scottish ancestors, Allie showed her fighting spirit from an early age. She often told the story of her scholarship teacher at Cooran Primary school. One day he pulled her to the front of the class in a rage because she had been daydreaming. He raised the cane to thrash her, but before he had a chance she punched him in the face. He didn’t touch her again. She left school that day and refused to return –ever. In 1940 the family moved to Cooroy where her father took up the position as foreman at the sawmill Straker’s had bought there. They lived in a lovely old home on the hill at Miva Street where Allie spent most of her life over the next seventy years. Growing through her teens during WW2 she

blossomed into a beauty with a sweet oval face and warm hazel eyes. Her hair was a glorious dark red, a thick tangle of curls which she held back in the victory roll fashion of the times. During the week she worked in Cooran at her aunt’s general store. Back home in Cooroy on the weekends, she enjoyed a whirl of dances, soldiers and parties. The bands played up a storm at the town hall as the soldiers stationed in Cooroy on their way north, and the locals jazz waltzed, quickstepped and boggied to the latest songs. Allie attracted a lot of admirers. She didn’t give her heart away easily though. It was Fred Kay who won her heart when he was back on leave from the war in New Guinea. The Kay and Basing family (Fred’s mother’s parents) were amongst the pioneer families in Cooroy. They were farmers, carriers and mechanics and built a well -

equipped garage in Cooroy in the 1930’s. Two of Fred’s uncles from the Basing family were killed in action in France in WW1. Their names are on the war memorial in Cooroy. Fred worked as an apprentice mechanic in Kay’s Garage before he joined the army when WW2 began. Fred and Allie married when the war ended and she was

just twenty. For over fifty years they lived happily together in Cooroy. They had one child, Lynn who grew up there. Allie loved her home, her garden and her busy life. She lived happily and liked nothing more than going Tewantin or Noosa on the weekends, fishing, boating and swimming. Allie led an active life in the commu-

nity involved in helping out at the school tuckshop and catering for sports days and church stalls. She sent loads of cooking to her friend Mary Bennett for the stalls and the Anglican Church fete held every August. In later years, she did a lot of cooking and fundraising to build Kabara, the local aged care facility. Fred joined the committee there and they both worked tirelessly to establish and maintain Kabara for the aged people in the town. After Fred died over fifteen years ago, Allie battled on bravely. Her faith in God sustained her and she enjoyed her friends, her garden and music, especially her piano. When she had to leave home over two years ago, she was devastated and fought tenaciously to stay. She moved to Arcare in Peregian Springs, an aged care facility close to where her daughter lived at Coolum Beach. She continued a determined rear guard action of resistance at Arcare

for the first six months. The staff eventually won her over with their love and care until she stopped calling her room Cell 42 and began to play her piano again. A beloved mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother Allie always loved and cherished her family and friends. A great talker and story teller, she held our family history in her mind until thankfully it was recorded by the Cooroy Genealogical Society in their book “Echoes of the Past.” Allie was many things: capricious, whimsical, intuitive, fierce and sometimes bloody minded. She was talented and funny with a great sense of humour. Mostly she was kind and always loving. Maybe she and Fred are now walking hand in hand along some heavenly beach. He would say, “What took you so long Allie?” and she would be talking his ear off….like always. Written by her daughter Lynn Tooth

OVER the last 30 years, household debt in Australia has skyrocketed, and it’s seeing more people turn to “debt repair” services. According to a study by AMP/NATSEM, average household debt has soared from about $60,000 in the late 1980s to around $250,000 today. For many people, a good chunk of household debt is taken up by their home loan. If you can manage the repayments, that’s not a problem - your home will grow in value as the debt is gradually paid off. However high interest debts and regular bills can quickly mount up, and when that happens it can be tempting to grasp at what appears to be a quick fix solution. That’s exactly what debt repair firms can seem to provide. These firms offer to help consumers facing financial hardship or who want to clear a history of debt defaults from their credit record. You may come across claims that these firms can ‘clean’, ‘fix’, or ‘wash away’ default listings. Others offer to negotiate with creditors and debt collectors.

The thing is, an investigation of the debt repair industry by the government’s money watchdog – ASIC, shows there are issues to be wary of. ASIC found debt repair firms don’t always spell out their fees and costs clearly. This makes it difficult to assess what you’re getting for your money. Consumers may face high pressure sales tactics and be asked to pay fees upfront. Most worrying, ASIC noted some debt repair firms had a poor understanding of the relevant law and the consequences of particular strategies. In other words, you could find yourself worse off. I realise there can be few things more stressful than overwhelming debt. But before turning to a debt repair firm there’s a lot you can do yourself at no cost at all. If you feel your credit record contains information that is wrong or out of date, contact credit reference agencies like Veda or Credit Savvy. You have a right to challenge any incorrect details. If you’re struggling to meet repayments, a

REMEMBER the great times you had as a scout? Perhaps you’d like to be a part of keeping the scout tradition alive? The Cooroy Scout Group, one of the District’s most active groups, is throwing its net a little wider this year to see if any community members are interested in becoming a leader. Leaders play an important role in guiding and mentoring young people to develop skills beyond the classroom and are crucial to the success of the Scouting Movement. As a Leader you will have access to a wide variety of resources, an opportunity to give back to the community, and the experience to educate Youth Members in the values and skills most important for being a good citizen. Cooroy Scout Group’s Group Leader, Sally

Clarke, says that being around young people and supporting them to organise their own activities, prepare for camps and other adventures, and develop survival and life skills is rewarding. “Being a scout leader is not like a teacher; a scout leader is more of a mentor,” said Sally. Sally said that a good scout leader is someone who is confident, reliable, patient and sensible, as well as being someone who can see potential in the kids. “I love seeing our young people tackle challenges that they didn’t think possible; I’ve seen them fail sometimes, but I’m right there to encourage them to get back up again and give it another try,” she said. The Cooroy Scout Group supports three scouting levels: Cubs (810 year olds), Scouts

(11-14 year olds) and Venturers (15-17 year olds). The Cooroy Scout Group is particularly keen to attract leaders at the Scouts level. All scout leaders must be willing to participate in various training activities. Scouting is a worldwide movement that has shaped the development of youth

and adults for more than 100 years. Scouts are in every part of our community and Scouts is the biggest and most successful youth organisation in Australia and the world. Approximately 15,000 boys, girls and adults in Queensland from various cultural or religious backgrounds and with varying abilities,

participate in all aspects of Scouting – an education for life! If you, or someone you know, thinks they may be interested in becoming part of this exciting movement, and would like to know more, please contact the Group’s Leader, Sally Clarke on 0415 984 900.

COOROY RAG police beat

MASSIVE MARKDOWNS UP TO

with Sergeant Mal Scott

A recent event that occurred in the a Noosa Hinterland town highlights the need for shopkeepers and members of the community to be vigilant in regards to shop security as well as credit/debit card security. Shopkeepers need to be very aware of locking access points to their shops at all times when the shop is not attended even during business hours. Rear doors should always be locked even when the shop is attended as offenders use detraction tactics to lure shop attendants to the front of the store so co offenders can access the shop from the rear and steal staff wallets and purses etc. Recently, a shop owner left the shop for a very short time for a toilet break and during that time offenders have entered the shop and stole a wallet and credit cards. The offenders then proceeded to use one of the stolen cards to make purchases under $100 using the pay wave system. The card owner realised his wallet was missing almost immediately and cancelled all but one of his cards which he had forgotten about. This card was then used in 30 odd Fraud related offences by the offenders purchasing items with the stolen card. Due to the vigilance and good work of a fellow business owner attending police were quickly able to positively identify the main offender and commence an investigation which has now led to the Noosa CIB arresting a 24 year old Tewantin man for 30 Fraud related offences. Police employ a number of intelligence based systems to track offenders committing this style offence, one of which is reviewing shop CCTV footage to capture images of suspects. If you are a shop owner who is yet to enter the world of technology please give serious consideration to installing a CCTV system within your shop as this not only deters offenders it also greatly increases the likelihood of the offender being caught by police. Reduced Insurance premiums and Tax deduc-

tions are an added incentive when considering installing a CCTV. Shop attendants also need to be suspicious of persons entering their stores wearing caps, sunglasses and hoodies as this can often be a sign that a person has unlawful intent. Another give away is an offender wanting to use the card multiple times in the same shop using the pay wave system to make purchases under $100. This behaviour is obviously very suspicious so in this instance do not hesitate to either ask for Identification or simply request that the person insert or swipe his card and enter his pin. If you are suspicious of a particular person a registration number of the car they leave in is also of great assistance to police should an offence be committed. Driver drug testing will continue in Cooroy with members of the State Road Policing Command and Local police conducting random interception sites with the specific intent of testing drivers for the presence of drugs in their system. Drivers who use illicit drugs should be very aware that legislation now exists which creates the offence of Drug driving simply by the presence of drugs being in their system which is not like the rules related to alcohol where a prescribed amount is mentioned in the charge and an offence is only committed once that prescribed threshold is reached. If you take illicit drugs DO NOT Drive. Mandatory license disqualification and fines exist for this offence. You have been warned. On a different topic and if you enjoy being better informed by what is happening in your community from a policing perspective can I encourage you to have a look at the My Police Sunshine Coast Blog Site which is a site used by the Queensland Police Service to issue crime alerts and provide community news. Once you visit the site you can subscribe to the site and receive regular updates sent to your device of choice.

COOROY RAG

COUNTRY Gets Special Mention for Economic Development With the official announcement of the local government election Noosa hopeful Brian Stockwell has released the first of his three policy platforms outlining what he would do to improve both individual and community livelihood if elected. In his policy Mr Stockwell suggests “As a community we should focus our economic development initiatives on improving livelihoods rather than the endless pursuit of ‘growth at any cost’. Whether paid worker, unpaid volunteer or parent our livelihood is the combination of income, capabilities, assets and other resources which can be utilised or exchanged to earn a living and satisfy our needs as individuals and as a community. Improving our livelihoods doesn’t have to come at the expense of our landscapes and lifestyles.” The policy outlines a range of shire-wide strategies that will help create the conditions for success for

start-ups in the priority industries such as health and well-being, rural enterprise, digital, environmental and creative industries. There is also special mention for hinterland issues including commitments to: • Lobby state government to activate the vacant Nandroya Industrial Estate at Cooroy. • Ensure the revised planning scheme is clear in identifying sustainable agriculture as a desired outcome for the rural zone and facilitate mixed farming enterprises. • Amend the Noosa Plan tables of assessment to ban high-impact factory farming. • Investigate industrial zones for local tradies sheds above flood level in Pomona. Having previously held the role of Sunshine Coast Regional Director for the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and having worked and researched extensively in sustainable agriculture and local food initiatives Mr Stockwell is confident he has ability drive initiatives to improve the livelihoods of hinterland communities.

HARDWARE Brian Stockwell at the Cooroy Lower Mill site In his discussions with business people and groups from Kin Kin to Peregian Mr Stockwell identified a number of common issues raised including concerns about: • Inflexibility in the now out-of-date planning scheme, • inadequate broadband connectivity, and • a Council staff culture that was perceived to be ‘unfriendly’ to business and investment attraction.

“Council should introduce measures to reduce redtape, increase flexibility in the planning scheme, and partner with business and industry groups to enhance economic diversification and build skills for both individuals and small businesses. “ he said. “Growing our own food and our own economy is just part of what is required to improve our livelihood; the Queensland Government needs to do its part

as well. We have the lowest rate of government employment in SEQ and I won’t give up badgering the Premier until she does something about that” Mr Stockwell said. Weave Heal Connect THE beautiful hinterland town of Pomona is to benefit from a project which aims to raise community awareness of the value of native and weed plants in the Noosa and district area, for creative use. Local artist René Bahloo of Weavery, in her project ‘Weave Heal Connected Sculpting with Landcare’, is facilitating a series of sculptural basket weaving experiences in Pomona in February, March and June 2016. These donation-based workshops provide the opportunity for community members to learn how to prepare local fibres to create a sculptures for permanent display at Noosa Landcare in Pomona. Not only does this enable greater understanding and connection with the local environment, it brings the community together to connect through creative practices. ‘Weave Heal Connected - Sculpting with Landcare’ is an extension of a previous project in partnership with Noosa and district Landcare which unfolded last year. This then expanded into the Weave Heal Connected Collective - Sunshine Coast basketry group, currently meeting at Pomona every Wednesday, led by Rene Bahloo. Now the group would like members of the public to come and join them in creating this large-

scale public sculpture, in Pomona. Basketry is the practice of connection - consciously connecting one fibre to another, where each fibre supports the other. This is also a metaphor for a healthy and sustainable community. Creating a community sculpture together in this project will enhance the lifestyle and wellbeing of the local community - through the connection and support that comes from the sharing of skills and ideas. There is currently a call for participants for this opportunity, which starts on 29 April and runs weekly till

22 May, and then continues again in September. The project is enabled by a partnership with Noosa and District Landcare and a RADF grant from Noosa Council. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Noosa Council partnership to support local arts and culture. All workshops are held at Noosa Landcare’s Future’s Centre near Pomona showgrounds. For more information, please email Rene Bahloo at weaverywork@gmail.com, www.weavery.com.au or call (0438)162552.

Refreshing summer health tonic WE all know it’s good to drink plenty of water especially on hot days in summer. Water is a great drink but sometimes we want something that has a little more. Soft drinks, fruit juices, alcoholic drinks and flavoured milks can be tempting but the high sugar content of these can seriously undermine our efforts to stay healthy. Sweet carbonated drinks are probably the worst but many of us like the sensation of drinking something fizzy. Jodie Persovic, Principal Dietitian and Naturopath at Nutrition Means (NuMe) in Pomona, wanted a beverage that was refreshing, easy to make and a boost to health rather that a drain on it. “I decided to avoid anything sweet. To

my surprise the so called “Sour Water” has become a hit among my soft drink consuming friends, who claim it is just as refreshing as a sickly sweet can of fizz,” said Jodie. “It also cleanses the palate, so you can get maximum enjoyment from a low-sugar treat after a glass of Sour.” The recipe is basic and should be adjusted to suit your taste. The green tea creates a more complex flavour: try experimenting with different varieties such as sencha or jasmine. Sour Water Refreshing Tonic • 750ml filtered water • 2 TBS fresh lemon juice - or a combination of lemon and lime • 1/2 cup of freshly brewed green tea - cooled (optional) • 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar - unpasteurised & unfiltered (optional) • Vitamin C (500-1000mg) - ask your health professional for advice (optional) Mix your preferred ingredients in a large glass jar or jug and store in the fridge. To serve, pour half a glass of sour water and top up with chilled soda water. Alternatively you can drink it straight

for a “flat” version. How Does it Boost my Health? Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and green tea contains catechins (epigallocatechin), a type of flavanol also with strong antioxidant effects. Lemon and lime juice and apple cider vinegar are weak organic acids that can stimulate digestion and help create an ideal pH level in the gut. For more details on the Summer Health Tonic visit nutritionmeans.com.au. Jodie Persovic is available for consultations and can be contacted on 0419 668 803 or jodie@nutritionmeans.com.au

Why am I sooooo thirsty! LOTS of hot Summer’s days so I thought it would be a great time to remind you all about the importance of avoiding dehydration! But what is the big deal if you get dehydrated? Well, did you know that more than half of your body weight is water?! No wonder we feel that we are not able to survive for more than a few hours without having a drink! We NEED water for our bodies to function correctly, and without it, we will end up very sick ... here’s why!! Water is the biggest part of all the fluids that travel around in the body, and there is a large amount of water inside your cells too. Even your bones have a considerable amount of water in them. The water moves as part of the blood and lymph circulating through the body, giving food and oxygen to the cells and helping waste to be taken away. Water also carries digestive enzymes around our gastrointestinal tract, so that our food can be broken down. Anything that the body doesn’t want is also carried with water in the blood to the kidneys, which make urine, and some water stays in the gut, then comes out as faeces. The body also uses water to keep our core body temperature at about 37degrees Celsius. Water is in the fluids that keep joints moving smoothly. Water is also the main component of saliva and mucous in the body. So what are the most common signs you may notice in a person who is dehydrated? Increased thirst; Dry or sticky mouth; Feeling tired or sleepy; Deceased urine output (with urine looking a dark yellow colour); Sunken eyes; Few/nil tear production in the eyes; Headache; Dizziness; Sunken fontanelles in an infant (the soft spot on the top of the head); Poor skin elasticity (skin sinks back slowly to its normal position when pinched). Oh you usually have a sports drink when you think you’re dehydrated? You’re wondering why you should pay extra to use the Oral Rehydra-

Page 18 - Cooroy Rag, February 17, 2016

tion Salts from your pharmacy ... In order to rapidly rehydrate the body and retain the fluid that has been consumed, it is important to have the right levels of glucose (sugar) and electrolytes (salts, and in particular sodium) in the solution. Usually, sports drinks have lots of sugar (to make them taste good) and not enough sodium, therefore interfering in the rehydration process. Rehydration formulas from our LiveLife pharmacies are formulated to contain the CORRECT concentration of these active ingredients. So here are some final tips on preventing dehydration: Avoid the hottest part of the day for sporting activities if possible; Wear loose, light-coloured and comfortable clothing – remember that dark colours absorb heat; Ensure you are wearing sunscreen and a hat that shades your head, neck, ears and face – sunburn may stop your body from being able to cool itself down properly; Hydrate with water or oral rehydration salt therapy before, during and after sport/exercise/alcohol consumption; Alcohol dehydrates the body, so avoid drinking any alcohol if you are going to be doing anything that may increase your risk of dehydration; Be alert and check for symptoms of heat stress and dehydration. LiveLife and stay cool and hydrated this Summer!! Information supplied by Jacqueline Kiel B. Pharm MPS. LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy 5447 6028, Pomona 5485 1270.

Kick start your year at E Fitness YES… another year has begun. I can’t believe we are into 2016 already!!! I hope everyone had a special time over the Christmas break and are well and truly into a happy, healthy new year! And as it is such a bright new year, I thought I would touch on some updates and happenings at E Fitness…. Firstly, I am very happy to announce that I will be starting a 12 week Balance and Strength course at the end of February at the studio. This course is designed for anyone who may struggle with their balance, have slightly lost their confidence, would like to increase their strength and endurance and just feel really good in general. This course will be limited to 8 people, so bookings are essential. There will be tests taken at the start of the 12 weeks, and compared at the end, noting just how far you have come in such a short time. This course will commence on Tuesday the 23rd Feb and run until the 17th May. Class times will be Tuesdays at 9.30am and Thursdays at 10.45am. I look forward to meeting you all and having a lot of fun together. I am also super excited to announce that I am now a Metafit instructor!! And will be starting up classes at the studio ASAP. Metafit classes are HIIT (high intensity interval training) and are completely bodyweight classes, requiring no equipment at all. My classes will be 45 minutes, but you will not want to go a minute longer! Designed to work at your maximum effort, for short bursts of time, these classes are an awesome challenge that achieve amazing results. The Metafit saying is “burn fat while you sleep”…. And you will do just that!!! Even though they are intense classes, like all classes at E Fitness they are achievable for any fitness level. Any exercise can be modified. So come and give one a go! I know you will instantly be addicted! Another pretty cool thing happening at the studio is I now stock my very own range of E Fitness activewear!!! I have 3 styles of capri tights, and 3 styles of singlets. All gear ranges from small to extra large, and are super comfy! And would you

like to know the best bit? They’re locally made!!! So come and support local, and try on some of my funky new gear. I can guarantee you will not want to take off the capris. They feel amaaaazzzzzing! A few months ago I decided to invest in some spin bikes for the studio, unsure of how the classes would take off. And I am quite pleased to say that I now hold four 45 minutes classes each week that Erin - Getting fill up pretty quick! My Physical at one of E Spinners are adher recent 80s dicted!!! I think I am exercise classes going to have to put more classes on the timetable! So, along with my new Metafit classes, if you’re up for a high intensity, shorter workout with awesome results and benefits… book your bum on a seat! You’ll be pleased you did. As you know, some fitness fads come and go…. But recently I proved to my E groovers that the 80’s still live on. Last Friday I hosted an 80’s Aerobics Class at the studio, and it was a hoot!!! Everyone looked amazing decked out in their leg warmers, big hair, fluro makeup and happy faces! And everyone had the moves!! I was impressed! We easy-walked our way into our warm up, grapevined our way through “Let’s get physical” by Olivia Newton-John, and kneerepeatered our way right to the end of the class! I know the 80’s may have been a bit of a daggy era, but that class was an amazing

workout and a heap of fun! I will be hosting 80’s aerobics classes once a month! So if you like a good dress up, a giggle and a fun workout, you should come along to the next one. Oh, and I give out lots of prizes too!!! So there you have it…. A brief look into what is currently happening at my awesome studio in the heart of Cooroy. If you want to kick start your 2016 on the right foot and want to workout in a comfortable, fun, encouraging environment, then give me a call today. There is a class or PT program to suit anyone and everyone and I look forward to meeting you soon. Facebook “E Fitness” or visit www.efitnesscooroy.com.au Erin Yarwood

A home with history

Bed 3; Bath 2: Car 4 A home with a history: 1880s railway gatekeeper’s cottage that was once the oldest building in Pomona, a legacy of the days when a guard was needed to open and close the town’s crossing gates

so the train could pass through. By 1989, the house stood empty and its fate was uncertain until an enterprising young couple bought it and had it trucked through town and over hill and dale to 34 Pioneer Road where for more than

two decades it has done duty as their family home. Today, the kids are grown up and the quaint piece of Pomona history that they rescued, lovingly restored and added to, is now for sale. Set on 8 acres of private, cleared and undu-

lating land, the century old timber cottage exudes simple, pretty charm. It has high ceilings, tongue and groove walls, timber floors and casement windows opening to the front verandah and elevated entertaining deck which the couple built on to the side of the house to create a blissfully breezy outdoor ‘room’. A comfortable lounge leads to an intimate formal dining room and small, serviceable galley kitchen with stove and dishwasher. Three bedrooms with fans, carpet and one with ensuite/one with adjoining dressing room or office, complete the accommodation. A gravel road winds down from the cottage past a deep dam stocked with fish and up to a plateau where a large machinery shed and generator sit awaiting a handyman/car enthusiast or even enthusiastic home builder. The

cleared hilltop would make an ideal - and beautiful new home site as it has power and a canopy of trees and abundant bird life..In fact, one could live in the cottage whilst building was undertaken and then rent out the cottage or use it as a farm stay/B and B proposition. Alternatively, the property could be developed as a hobby farm or even camping ground. It could also appeal as a pretty weekender especially as only moderate touches are needed to bring the historic (but not heritage-listed) cottage up to its charming designer best. The property is within easy commuting distance of Cooroy, Eumundi or Gympie. Price: $615,000. Contact Kess Prior, 0404 344 399 Hinternoosa.com.au, 5447 7000.

30th January 2016 was the Open Day at Cooroy Golf Club. The day went ahead even though the weather wasn’t promising, with over 100 participants turning up to play the mixed 3 person Ambrose. The sky was heavy with rain clouds and the air was thick and humid. The fairways were wet and the greens were unpredictable so the scoring was going to be interesting. The whole day was based on participation and friendship and it was great to see so many out on the course giving it a go. There were some terrific shots played and as golf goes, some pretty bad ones. With about 2 holes to go the heavens decided to open up, just enough to give some a good old soaking. After the game a nice luncheon was put on and thanks to the ladies it was delivered with a smile. At the Presentation the President Rob Powell welcomed everyone to the club and spoke about the upcoming year with Golf Director Graeme Finn doing the presentation of prizes.

NDSHS swimming carnival

SOCIAL PLAY 7 DAYS after 3pm only $15

Myall St, Cooroy 5447 6258

Kellys Earth Works THE Nambour Swimming Pool hosted the Noosa District State High School’s senior school’s annual swimming carnival. Students and staff proudly dressed in their house colours and cheered on their team mates in a variety of events, including an obstacle course swim, swimming heats and championship finals, house swims, freestyle and t-shirt relays and a rescue race. House pride was on show with the war cry competition, which was a very loud and close contest among the four houses (Borumba, Pinbarren, Cooroora and Tinbeerwah).

Cooroy Bowls COOROY Community Bowls Club opened its season this month with Jackpot Pairs played on Wednesday, 3 February starting at 1pm. Winners were ex Noosa Club players Steve and Jennie Bowie with Russell Butler and Sandra French in second place. Business Bowlers played in damp conditions on Wednesday night . Results of that game are unavailable but I am told that they had a good time. Conditions were similar on Thursday night when the High Rollers played in very damp conditions on a very heavy green. As this was the first night of the competition there were 7 winning teams and 7 losing teams. Friday’s 4pm game was not played be-

colour me

cause of the weather. The Hinterland Local League was played at the home green by both Men’s and Ladies’ Teams. A wet day was had by all . Congratulations to the ladies who were the winners of the day – Pairs: Bettina and Ann won 30 to 15 while Eileen, Maureen and Yvonne won the Triples 22 to 14. The Men played Nambour at Cooroy on a very damp green and counted themselves lucky to even get a game with the weather conditions of the moment. Unfortunately for Cooroy their luck did not last and they were beaten 4 rinks to 0. The fours lost 19 to 11 , the triples 26 to 13, the 3 bowl pairs 18 to15 and the 4 bowl pairs 19 to 14 . Better luck next time when the weather clears .
