news Wellington stands on his record

COOROY RAG

Tony Wellington is aiming to be re-elected as mayor of Noosa. He has certainly had a long time in the public eye, initially as the Councillor for Tewantin and the Noosa hinterland on the amalgamated council, and then as councillor and finally mayor on the reformed Noosa Council. That, he argues, should have given residents plenty of opportunity to judge his capabilities. “I was there on the front-line throughout the anti-amalgamation campaign and the deamalgamation campaign,” Wellington says. “Over the past four years as mayor, the Noosa Council has achieved a massive amount. We have restructured the organisation and increased many services. I was just adding up all the policies and strategies we have consulted on, developed and endorsed during the last four years. There are over 50 of them.” “Throughout my time as mayor, we have kept all rate rises at or below CPI or the Local Government Cost Index. We have also run a surplus budget every year, and managed to pay down $10 million dollars of high-interest rate debt that we inherited.” “We created a ground-breaking deal that will see 2,400 hectares of plantation and state forest in our hinterland rehabilitated and converted into national park. This will provide a massive wildlife corridor that will benefit many creatures, including koalas.” “At my instigation, we set up the Sustainable Tourism Stakeholder Reference Group to tackle the tricky issue of what sustainable tourism should look like for Noosa. This is the first time in Noosa’s history that so many key environment, resident and business groups have been gathered around the same table to formally discuss Noosa’s future.” “Importantly, we have seen the local economy expand and grow. Noosa achieved a 5.18% growth in GRP last year. This compares with a state average of just 1.23%.” “So what do I want for Noosa into the future? I want to see that trajectory of eco-

nomic diversification continue.” “I want to continue to roll out transport solutions that maintain a focus on new technologies.” “I want Noosa to become a real global exemplar of sustainable living – a showcase that will demonstrate to the world how we can maintain a wonderful lifestyle for our residents, as well as a healthy environment, and a buoyant economy.” “I will seek to establish a stand-alone regional gallery for Noosa, one that is capable of accommodating large touring exhibitions. I will continue to work towards improved fire management methods. And I will see a Kabi Kabi cultural centre developed in Noosa.” “Under my leadership, Noosa will continue to be a local government leader in climate change adaptation and response. And I will build on my existing great relationships with politicians at Federal and State level to ensure Noosa continues to receive their attention, not to mention financial grant funding.” “I guarantee that I will continue to resist those forces that aim to undermine Noosa’s special qualities. This is important, because those elements that define Noosa also underpin our lifestyle and are our economic strength. In short, I will resist those who want to make Noosa more like everywhere else.” “I stand on my record of unwavering commitment to this community.”

The hospital began in 1910, the vision of an emancipated London trained female medico, Dr Ellen Wood. That pioneering spirit is echoed in the current approach being taken by Healthe Care under guidance of CEO Jo Munday.

The newly-introduced, evidence-based robotic therapy is a first for southeast Queensland and supplements conventional rehabilitation therapy by increasing the number of repetitions during rehab, for positive patient gains targeting stroke and neurological patients and proven successful with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and musculoskeletal rehab. “It’s fantastic that Eden

While we’re extremely proud of our reputation as an established provider of comprehensive private medical and rehabilitation services, our

expansion plans to deliver integrated private hospital services including inpatient rehabilitation, medical and mental health services will ensure an all-inclusive offering to support recovery and functional improvement from mental illness, trauma, accident, illness and general physical and medical conditions. “As a Healthe Care-operated hospital, we’re committed to exploring new and innovative ways to deliver our services whilst ensuring

I congratulate all involved.”

In a small backyard workshop in Noosa’s Hinterland, surfboard maker Tom Wegener has nearly single handedly buoyed the sinking paulownia wood industry. In 1999 Tom began experimenting with paulownia and soon found ways to make high quality wood surfboards. He found that paulownia has the incredible properties of being light, easy to work, abundant and, most importantly, does not absorb saltwater. Soon surfboard makers around Australia were using paulownia wood. Simultaneously, The paulownia industry was suffering a slow death. In the 1980s and 90s paulownia plantations were popular as green investments and tax write offs. The trees grew nearly as fast as the money was collected, but it all ended in tears. There was little market for the wood and many of the planta-

tions were ill planned and failed. When the trees were supposed to be harvested, they were no market for the wood. Many of the plantations were bulldozed. Fortunately, just as the best plantations were hoping to harvest, surfers came along with orders for the wood. Tom Wegener was the biggest buyer of paulownia in Australia from 2002 to 2009. Sean Murphy of ABC Landline had been following the paulownia story since the beginning. “I covered it when it began, declined, and now again with its rebirth,” says Sean. Sean is an avid surfer and had been following the story with the surfboard makers. When he asked the biggest paulownia plantation who buys the most wood, the answer was surfers. He needed to do one more story. The story will air on ABC Landline on Sunday, March 8. Tom is now running for

Noosa Council. He has run his successful surfboard business in Cooroy for 20 years and is now wanting to give back to his community. He hopes to be one of the councillors which will focus on the hinterland. “My top priorities will be to support small business and our circular economy. Through my years of research in small manufacturing in Australia, I found that sustainability comes from individuals investing in their own small business. It is a culture of personal contacts with customers, quality service along with staying with the innovations of the times which lead to stability and longevity. Noosa provides a fertile environment for these types of businesses to thrive and I will support them as the foundation of our local economy,” says Tom. Tom looks forward to meeting you and learning how he may best serve the hinterland.

news How does your home loan measure up?

COOROY RAG

Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Are you interested in borrowing additional funds to renovate or invest? Do you want a home loan with more of the features you need? Do you want to move to a lower overall interest rate and fee structure? Your bank can help you assess whether your home loan measures up, examine your current interest rate, monthly fees and any hidden costs. This can then help determine whether your home loan delivers the kind of rewards it should. Chances are your existing home loan could do with an overhaul. It’s a good idea to check to see if your bank is looking after you. With a choice of variable and fixed interest home loans at highly competitive rates, a line of credit loan or even a greener option, there’s bound to be a home loan that suits your needs. So before looking into a new home loan or even refinancing the one you presently have, there are a few questions to ask: • Does your home loan offer fee free accounts? • Do they offer a discounted interest rate for having all your banking with them? • What about offset accounts, can you have the option of a full or partial offset? What about fees on this offset account? • Can you have flexibility in extra payments on your loan? • What about a redraw option, can you access these funds already paid in advance on your loan? • Does your bank have a local manager

there to approve your loan on the spot? • Will they be there to assist you after the loan has been completed? It’s all about getting the right loan for you. Remember it only takes a short time to get a loan approved, but takes a long time to pay it off, so you need to have a good relationship with your bank and make sure you actually have one with your bank manager - and that’s where your Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches come in. If you would like to see if your loan measures up, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly on simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au

The ever popular Wythes Real Estate Photo Booth, will once again be on the verandah of the Cooroy Butter Factory Art Centre at this year’s Fusion Festival. Take a photo for mum for Mother’s Day – or better still bring mum along and put her in the shot. The Cooroy Fusion Festival will be held Saturday 9 May 9am-3pm of the Mother’s Day weekend and is made possible by the generous support of local business sponsors such as Wythes Real Estate. Fusion Festival Chair, Pamela Sweetapple, said the photo booth and Stampin’ Up cardmaking table was an annual favourite, and best of all will be free. “The Fusion Festival is a fun, fabulous and plastic & waste-free local event, which brings Cooroy together and showcases the best of what the Hinterland has to offer,” Pamela said. “This year we have a dual celebration of the Library celebrating it’s 10th birthday and Fusion Festival celebrating its 10th event. It’s the perfect reason for a community party.” Sirah Robb of Wythes said the photo booth and card making table was a chance for the community to make something special for their mum. “Come along and capture a memory that all mums would love to see on their fridge and will make them smile.” This year’s Fusion Festival will once again have plenty to get involved with, from the wide range of birthday activities in the Cooroy Community Library – including a birthday cake – to talented local entertainers with a mix of youth and experience. The always popular Larrikin Puppets will be performing in the outdoor Library amphitheatre and MacDonald’s Animal Farm will be once again in the Library outdoor playground. Wander up Maple Street to the annual Lifeline Denim Sale at Memorial Hall, pop in to the CWA Hall on the roundabout to view the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show, or wander the

pathways to the end of Emerald Street to visit the Permaculture Noosa site and view their gardens, compost making and pick up a free plant in your recyclable coffee cup. The Lower Mill Site will be humming with woodworkers and their crafts at the work sheds of the Cooroora Woodworkers and the Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group. Enjoy food from the local stalls, or explore some of the fabulous local business in the Cooroy townships. We will all be celebrating together. There is plenty to see and do – so make sure you follow the Cooroy Fusion Festival Facebook page for the latest updates. This is all made possible by the partnership with Noosa Council, sponsorship from Bendigo Bank, support from Tourism Noosa and Plastic Free Noosa, local business sponsors and the extra effort of all our local volunteers who will be manning the community stalls and assisting on the day. Alice Joan Boyce (Joan) 15/1/30 – 23/12/19 Joan Boyce (nee Johnson) was born in Gympie, the 11th child to parents David and Edith Johnson. The family had a dairy farm at Traveston where Joan helped to milk the cows by hand before school. She also helped pick beans. At 21 Joan left the family farm and moved to Gympie where she worked as a barmaid until she married her first husband in 1957 and moved to Caloundra where she worked as a bartender and entertainer at the Perle Hotel. After her mother passed away in 1961 she moved to Brisbane where her daughter Jenyce was born. Joan met John Boyce, who was in the Air Force and stationed at Amberley, on a blind date in 1966 and the couple married on December 29, 1971. They lived in Singapore for almost four years before John was posted to Melbourne for 18 months before moving back to Brisbane. After his discharge from Amberley in 1976 John and Joan saw an ad in the paper for land in Cooroy

and decided to buy the 15 acre property on Black Mountain where they raised vealers and ran cattle and horses. In 1978 they bought Cooroy Produce, located at the old butter factory before selling it in 1981. Always a horse lover, having learned to ride when she was only three years old, Joan became involved in the Cooroy Horse & Pony Club where she started the ‘Confidence & Balance Program’ for children. She was also involved in starting the Active Riders Club and the Kilkivan Endurance Ride which she participated in. Joan became a Life Member of the Cooroy Pony Club in 1998 and in 1999 received the Citizen of the Year award from the Rotary Club for her achievements with the Pony Club. Music was another big part of Joan’s life. She was a self-taught musician playing the piano, banjo, mandolin, guitar and mouth organ. She was also a great yodeller. Local Cat Writes Tell-All Books They say time flies when you’re super busy and having fun. The year is already racing by for Debra Palmen at her pop-up shop French & Vintage. There’s only a month to go until we close for the year, reports Debra. Our time here has sped by in a blink. In previous pop-up shops many locals have met Calypso the Cat, French & Vintage’s furry shop manager, but this time she’s made lots more fans. Calypso’s about to become a published author, Debra tells us, and she’s turned into a total Diva. She won’t get out of bed for anything other than premium cat food these days. And she insists on sitting in the shop manager’s chair at every opportunity.

was always happy to be out and about with her guitar making people smile. Joan loved being the star. She sang on the Radio, rubbing shoulders with The Webb Brothers and Chad Morgan and in 1991 she appeared in an SBS feature ‘Profile of Women of Australia’ where she was seen on her horse rounding up the cattle and singing ‘I Was Born in Sunny Queensland’. She was also in a TV commercial for the IGA Supermarket in

Cooroy. Her photo is included in Kim Guthrie’s published book ‘Beautiful People’ and her interview for the compilation of family stories is included in the book ‘Echoes of the Past – Cooroy & District Families’. Joan and John were both life members of the Cooroy RSL (John was president for 20 years). Sadly, John passed away in 2006. Joan stayed on the farm at Black Mountain which she dubbed the ‘Triple J Ranch’ – after John,

Joan and Jenyce, where she continued to ride her horses. Joan always had a glass half full attitude and a big community spirit. She always chose to look on the bright side of life. You could always hear Joan coming – her laugh was infectious, and her Aussie humour was loud and proud. Joan passed peacefully at home, surrounded by love and loved ones. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Calypso’s book, the first in an adventure series of picture books, is called Sink or Swim. Set in Art Deco era France and Vietnam, it’s about how she helps her girl Tallulah overcome her fear of the water and learn to swim. Bengal cats love the water, Debra tells us, so it seemed appropriate for Calypso’s first book to have an aquatic theme. Other books will be set all around the world, and even on an alien planet. Calypso’s stories are about facing your fears, overcoming obstacles and not being afraid to do things your way, says Debra. Young or old, anyone who knows and loves cats will recognise their own furry friend in Calypso’s attitude and behaviour. Debra and Calypso will be in-store at French & Vintage until the end of March. It’s in the rear gallery space at Old Barn Café, 15 Diamond Street (formerly French & Gorgeous). Why not come by to browse the beautiful French vintage wares and meet the furry author? Sink or Swim is scheduled to be published in March and you can join Calypso’s mailing list to learn straight from the cat’s mouth when it’s available.

Scott’s family own and run Pomona True Value so many locals will recognise him from when he worked there, but more recently he’s been running his C02 Beer Gas business. “I’ve been brewing for years having been taught by some of our finest local brewers including Matt from the Bonsai Brewhouse in Cooran. I started selling the C02 cannisters and just thought it would be great if there was a ‘one stop shop’ locally where you could get everything you need to make your own beer and spirits instead of running all over the show,” says Scott. The Brew Store is a great set up modelled from his own home garage with a real man cave vibe, his prices are very competitive, the stock extensive, and the advice is free. Scott also has plans for an on-line store as well as a brew club and brew days where you can go along and learn how to brew or improve your brewing techniques with local expert brewers. So, if you’re a keen brewer or keen to get started, head to The Brew Store in Noosaville, open from 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. They also deliver to the hinterland every Thursday. For more information call Scott on 5412 2766 or visit www.thebrewstore.com.au

Cooroy is host to Australia’s premier body painting event held on 4 & 5 April, the Australian Body Art Festival. As well as amazing body and face painting there are all sorts of other artforms that anyone with a bit of creative inspiration can get involved in. “There are so many opportunities for creative people to get involved at the festival. The body painting is a bit more specialised, with specific paints and equipment needed and a bit of skill using the medium and a living person as a canvas. But novices are definitely encouraged to enter and have even won prizes in the past so experience isn’t a pre-requisite. There is also a junior face painting category this year for the first time for under 18’s. There is also wearable art and surfboard art competitions which are great for anyone that is artistic, creative or imaginative,” said event manager Danielle Taylor. The Noosa Outback Surfboard Art competition is exactly what it sounds like – you get given a surfboard to decorate however you like. While painting it immediately jumps to mind, you can be as creative as you like and could use anything such as decoupage, mixed media, graffiti art or whatever your imagination can think up! The theme is Noosa Outback and there are some great cash prizes and the surf boards are all auctioned at the end of the day to raise funds for next year’s festival. Another great competition for creative souls is the Bendigo Bank Wearable Art Competition with a theme of Time Travel. This is funky fashion created out of discarded materials. Again, you are only limited by your imagination with all sorts of materials being used in the past including bottle caps, spoons, video tapes, cds, plastic bags and more!

Entry fees are very affordable with some great prizes up for grabs. Early bird rates finish on Friday 28th February, so get in quickly! All the information is available on the website www.australianbodyart.com.au The 2020 festival has a theme of Time Travel. The Australian Body Art Festival is run by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program. It couldn’t be held without the support of the sponsors: Mix FM, Sunshine Coast Daily, Eumundi & District Historical Association, Tourism Noosa, Noosa Outback, Wythes Real Estate, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Fiducian Financial Services, Face Paint Shop Australia, SPV Accounting, Sunny Coast Accountants, Cooroy Supa IGA, Cooroy RSL, Gelignite Jacks, Fairy Tale Events & Equip4Hire, Firefly Solutions, Mehron Makeup Australia, Tewantin Noosa RSL, Cooroy Hotel, Junkies Magazine, Not Just Another Salon and Derivan.

dining & entertainment Local foodies offer healthy alternatives

COOROY RAG If you’ve looked at the shops opposite Apex Park lately, you may have noticed new occupants in the space beside Cooroy Car Parts. In the past, it has served as a takeaway but these days it’s a cooperative kitchen and wholesome food outlet run by Liesl Doery (Nourish Collective) and Pip Beatty (Paleo Rolls). These two “foodies” (both Cooroy locals), previously worked out of another kitchen but were

forced to move last year. Although they run separate businesses, they have discovered that sharing this space is working out well for them. The reason for this might be because they both offer food products that cater to a clientele looking for healthier options, as well as food that fits various dietary requirements. Both businesses are predominantly wholesalers with Liesl and Pip using the kitchen on different days to

make their produce and then covering for each other at the shop on their distribution days. Liesl makes a range of pestos and hummuses under the Nourish Collective label, as well as glutenfree, vegan cakes and savoury rolls. She supplies mainly organic health food shops, deli’s, fruit shops and cafes on the Coast and in Brisbane. She insists on using organically grown, locally produced ingredi-

ents, and supports, wherever possible, farmers that use sustainable, regenerative farming practices. Although Liesl doesn’t sell her Nourish Collective range directly from the shop, she does use her products on the sandwiches, salads, quiches and other food items which she sells from their outlet. ‘It’s a good way of showcasing how to use my products,’ she says. You’ll find Liesl at the shop on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Liesl is wellknown on the local food scene having worked alongside the hospitality teacher at the High School restaurant for the last 4 years, and at Sunshine Butterflies where she does cooking classes once a week for adults with disabilities. Pip Beatty has been making and selling paleo rolls for almost 4 years now. Her rolls are a popular choice because they are ideal for people following both the paleo and keto diets or for anyone just trying to cut down on their carbs. She has also dis-

covered that they are popular with diabetics because they are sugar free (no refined sugar – so they don’t spike insulin levels), as well as having no gluten, no dairy and no grains. Pip is also adding a larger hamburger bun called the keto bun to her range. The reason her rolls and buns are so low in carbs is because they contain ingredients such as coconut flour, psyllium and almond meal. They are also light and soft (unlike a lot of gluten-free bread) – and they taste like bread! As Pip points out, ‘the thing most people miss on low-carb diets is bread because we have all grown up eating sandwiches.’ Pip’s rolls have no preservatives and no yeast, are good in the freezer for up to 6 months and have a refrigerated shelf-life of up to 15 days. She sells to IGAs and health food stores and is now looking at cafes who want a grain-free alternative for their buns. You’ll find Pip in the shop on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The shop hours are 10am to 2pm which covers a lot of the lunchtime trade, how-

Liesl Doery and Pip Beatty – providing healthy alternatives. ever, both Pip and Liesl also produce frozen meals for people to take home. Liesl focuses on vegetarian options while Pip prepares some meat options such as lamb shanks and beef cheeks. They come in 1 or 2 person serves and are particularly handy if one person in a family has a dietary

restriction. In a world where more and more people are discovering the benefits of cutting out processed foods and sugars and concentrating more on wholefoods, it’s good to know that these good alternatives are available right here on our doorstep.

His Excellency with Mayor Tony Wellington NoosaCare Exectuvie Team Queensland’s Governor, Paul de Jersey, and Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington, visited residents at NoosaCare’s Carramar site on Wednesday 19 February to discuss issues relating to the aged care sector and hear first-hand about their fire evacuation experience. All 142 residents were successfully evacuated from Carramar during Noosa’s bushfire crisis in November last year and many had stories to tell the visitors. According to NoosaCare CEO, Megan D’Elton, the Governor was keen to understand the emergency procedures but also wanted to understand how staff, residents and volunteers had coped with the challenges of the fire emergency and supported one another. “Our residents were amazing during the evacua-

tion. They were calm, practical and good-humoured and really showed those of us who are a little bit younger just what resilience is all about,” Ms D’Elton said. “It was a terrific honour to host the Governor, Mrs de Jersey and the Mayor at Carramar and show them how we do things here, particularly our support for people living with dementia. We were able to highlight our above-average staff to resident ratios and walk them through our beautiful gardens.” The Governor spent time chatting with four of NoosaCare’s centenarians and presented them with a Governor’s coin. He also met with Mary Gregson – a resident of NoosaCare for nearly 20 years – and other residents, staff and volunteers involved in the evacuation.

Contact lenses - an attractive alternative to glasses Around 680,000 people of all ages wear contact lenses in Australia. Every year more and more people are turning to these incognito but common little helpers to bring their vision into focus. Local optometrist Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy has been fitting and prescribing contact lenses for her patients for 35 years. She has seen many changes in the contact lenses available in that time. Jenny reminds us that “contact lenses can be a safe and convenient alternative to spectacles, provided you follow your optometrist’s instructions.” “I am excited about the advances in technology including the materials being used

Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, February 26, 2020

and the evolution of designs that have made it possible for people of almost any age to wear them successfully. “We can prescribe for most prescriptions including high astigmatism, severe long or short-sightedness and age-related focus problems for the over-40’s” says Jenny. “We are also prescribing special soft contact lenses for children that have been shown in research to slow the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) and specially customised hard lenses (Ortho-Keratology) which are only worn overnight while sleeping to free low to moderately myopic patients from wearing spectacles or contact lenses during the day.”

Jenny says that “It needs to be remembered that all contact lenses, even cosmetic tinted lenses, are legally considered medical devices and as such require a prescription and should be professionally fitted and supplied by a legitimate source to avoid complications such as infection or inflammation which untreated might lead to vision loss or blindness.” For full-time or part-time wear or even oc-

casional use, for sports, social occasions or holidays – contact lenses are an ideal alternative to spectacle wear. Whatever your lifestyle and preferences, there should be the right contact lens out there for you. For more information about contact lenses or to make an appointment, call in to optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, phone on 5442 555 or go to www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

A Kindness Shout Out! How amazing is our town?! It has been six years since The Kindness Club distributed our Positive Quotes Posters to local businesses and many still have them on display! In early 2014, the children (aged 5 – 12 years) set to work making brightly coloured posters with the hopes of brightening someone’s day. The quotes were written by the children themselves, or some chose a favourite quote. The children’s messages were displayed all over town much to the Kindness Club’s delight! In 2017, to show our appreciation, we revisited the businesses still displaying our posters and gave them new posters to refresh their display. Rather than replacing them, some kept them both up for everyone to see! It was a very proud moment to see a shot of one of our posters on TV when Cooroy was featured on Queensland Weekender a few years ago! Now in 2020, you can still find the posters in many shop windows! To those businesses, WE THANK YOU! We continue to receive lovely feedback about the posters and the children (many have moved on to high school now) are still thrilled to see them. Your kindness and support is most appreciated. You help teach the children the true meaning of community!

If you would like a new 2020 poster for your business, school or organisation, The Kindness Club would love to design a one-of-a-kind poster just for you! Please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com We love Cooroy!

sport Andrew hits a Hole In One

COOROY RAG

Congratulations to Andrew Stewart for winning the $500 Hole in One competition sponsored by Palm Lake Resort Cooroy. Andrew made the perfect shot on Hole 15 recently on the Cooroy golf course.

Gratitude grows resilience Scientists have looked at why some people live a long and happy life. One of the key ingredients is gratitude. Gratitude makes us more resilient. Because if we are aware of the good things in our life, when things don’t go our way we have an awareness that we still have a lot to feel thankful for. As a part of Cooroy State School’s ‘Grow your Mind’ program, Year 5CW grow gratitude by writing something they are grateful or thankful for every week.
