Wearable art highlights recycling message at Australian Body Art Festival

Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank with Award Winning Judge Jules McCrae THE art on display at Cooroy’s Australian Body Art festival is unique, interesting and it is also good for the environment! The Wearable Art competition is where artists create fashion or costumes from recycled materials, highlighting the importance of reusing and recycling and making it fun! “This is a great competition and it is really accessible to everyone to come up with a creation. We have all ages from primary school right up to senior citizens that get involved in this competition and it is great to see how they reuse common items and how they interpret the theme which is Wild Things this year. We have three awesome award-winning

It’s a great message which is why we are proud to be the major sponsors for this competition,” said Geoff Edwards, Senior Manager of Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank. Message from Marty OUR electorate of Nicklin is a diverse place. Every community in Nicklin has its own unique issues that need representation. Cooroy has a long neglected overpass intersection, Palmwoods has traffic issues, Mapleton and Kenilworth need the Obi Obi Road fixed and Nambour needs our hospital up and running again with a full suite of services along with rail upgrades and the lists

By Marty Hunt, MP go on. It’s fair to say that the community of Nicklin feels neglected. There’s no easy fix to this neglect and it’s a fight we have to continue to take up and get our share. This week we saw a frustrated Nambour community get together a group quickly growing on a Facebook page called ‘Reviving Nambour’. A large group gathered and felt they had to take matters into their own hands to get things done. Whilst

this was an encouraging rally of community support, it also said to me as a newly elected representative that ‘we have had enough’. I’m listening to the voice of the community and last week we had our first sittings of Parliament in Brisbane. This is where I come to represent Nicklin and hold the Government to account. To represent what our community needs and ask the questions, why not us? Why not

now? The people of Nicklin elected me and therefore elected the priorities that we committed to during the campaign. I will keep you updated on what the current Government do or fail to do in response.

Rob Midgely from Greenwood Grove Thinks Fusion Will be a Hoot THE annual Cooroy Fusion Festival offers up an abundance of free experiences and entertainment on Saturday 12 May. One of the most enduring and popular of these is the Geckoes Wildlife Show, sponsored by Greenwood Grove. “The Geckoes Wildlife Show is always a really popular feature of the festival and people of all ages like getting up close and personal with our Aussie animals and birds. We’ve expanded their involvement this year and after the show on the main stage there will be walkabout the festival where you can meet and greet the animals, with plenty of photo opportunities” explained Chris Bell, Chairperson of Cooroy Fusion committee. The Geckoes Wildlife team have a wide range of specialist skills and knowledge in the environmental area such as endangered species, fauna friendly backyards and wildlife corridors so it isn’t just great fun to see the animals but a valuable learning experience for all ages too! “Greenwood Grove shares a border with the natural wildlife corridor along Cooroy Creek which runs through Cooroy and is a wildlife blessing. Cooroy is a vibrant hinterland township with strong community values, an incredible array of sporting, shopping, cultural and educational facilities, yet only a short drive to Noosa Heads, the beach and National Park. news Kiah’s shooting for the stars after scholarship win

COOROY RAG In the coming weeks, university numbers will swell and students’ empty minds will soon become open ones. Former Noosa District State High School student, Kiah Jardine will be one of them. Although she was always going to pursue her dream of studying a Bachelor of Science, Kiah will now be leaving Noosa with a scholarship, thanks to Bendigo Bank. Kiah was the stand-out applicant for the annual scholarship provided by the Community Bank branches and can’t wait to start her dream of tertiary study at the University of Queensland. It’s the beginning of an exciting chapter for the teen who has enjoyed success through a lot of hard work in recent years. Her passion is science, but her love is for physics astrophysics, to be precise. It will serve Kiah well in her quest for a career within a new space research facility to be built in Australia. The Community Bank Scholarship will support Kiah with study related costs for the next two years at $5,000 per year and she says she can’t wait to get

started. “It’s going to a great adventure and I’m so excited. I’m very thankful to Bendigo Bank and our local Community Bank branches giving me this opportunity and the pathway provided by Noosa Distsict High School. It means so much to me, my family and my future. I’m passionate about what lies ahead, a lot of hard work and look forward to seeing where all this will take me,” Kiah beamed. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) manages the Cooroy, Pomona, Tewantin and Marcoola Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and wellknown local branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to Kiah to further her tertiary education was part of the Community Banks’ commitment to building a stronger community. “The idea behind the scholarship is to assist one regional or rural student per year from Noosa District High School and who is attending university for the first time in 2018,” Mr. Edwards said.

2018 scholarship winner, Kiah Jardine pictured with Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank and Chris Roff from NDSHS “Because of the high costs associated with study, we knew many applicants would need financial assistance to help their dreams come true. A sign of the times ALTHOUGH Cooroy Golf Club has secured sponsorship from Schweppes after losing their $5000 a year for five years sponsorship from Wimmers because of Council’s directive to remove sponsorship signage, the whole ordeal has left a sour taste in the mouths of many in the golfing, busi-

ness and wider community. Club manager Wayne Patston said Council gave him little notice that he had until December 31 last year to remove three signs. Wimmers, Cooroy Motel and Hinterland Dental signage had to go or the club would incur a heavy fine. Council said they had received a complaint by a

REGARDING your last edition front page article concerning the Noosa Council owned and managed Cooroy RV Stopover, all agree a Cooroy RV Park “would be” a financial asset to our local and business community. However, the serial articles fail to emphasize we “already have” such by the longer existing, highly-rated, successful and professionallymanaged Cooroy’s No Worries Caravan and Motor Home Park, 154 Holts Road, which is achieving that goal!! It defies logic and fairness why a local government, which previously approved and restricts and received “contributions” from and for this private commercial enterprise’s operation, would later spend resident’s rates to publicly compete with and threaten the financial profitability of that private business and its ongoing needed local services and GST national revenue. Such Council action is further irrational when the distant bureaucrats lack any such business experience or expertise and expressly seeking merely a “neutral cost” goal, though reportedly already “in the red by $40,000 and growing”! Why a local Cooroy businessman, ex-Councilor and Chamber of Commerce group would request and support (as reported in the Noosa News Jan 29, 2018) such competing action with increasing capital investments against a pre-existing excellent local business operation adds to my confusions. While the private business pays Tourism Noosa and Council to promote their operations, it is also unfair that Council promotes their competing enterprise on their website with even a flyer and street signs (also at taxpayer expense), notably when that same Council repeatedly refuses the private local business (as well as many other local businesses) any needed sign(s) to better and more safely direct consumers to the highway exit or their property. As the Cooroy RV Park is in a flood zone, next to the sewerage centre and a noisy factory, and admittedly lacks desired facilities, it will eventually fail after an exorbitant loss, reminding us why we shouldn’t be a socialist nation and best respect capitalism and the rights and rewards of instead supporting this and other private small business operations. Jim Cooney, Cooroy Country Cottages

local resident and the signs didn’t comply with the Noosa Plan’s advertising requirements. “There was just no reasoning with Council,” said Mr Patston. “It was irrelevant to them that we are a small, non-profit club that relies heavily on sponsorship to operate. Council has basically forced us to go with a national company for sponsorship rather than our own local, and may I add, iconic business.” “These signs have been here for years without causing any problems,” says Mr Patston. “It certainly wasn’t detracting from the character of our town.” Sponsorship signs across the road at the swimming pool are on State land and are not under council jurisdiction. Business owners should be warned that Council will be undertaking an audit of advertising signs this year. The minutes of the Planning & Organisation committee meeting dated Feb-

ruary 2, 2016 states that signs in Noosa should advertise a place of business or give directions and or information. They should be architecturally attractive and be compatible with the character of the area and not dominate streetscapes. Well designed and maintained signs which respect the scale and character of the street do serve an important function and role. When signs do not relate to the area, are excessive in size, numbers and feature large designs, they reflect poorly upon the overall quality of the area and can detract from the function they are intended to serve. Current Advertising Device Requirements: Advertising devices or signage is currently managed by The Noosa Plan and the Local Laws, with signage primarily managed via the planning scheme’s Advertising Devices Code. The Noosa Plan’s Advertising Device Code includes requirements for all signage on private and public property

that is not of a temporary nature such as pylon signs, roof signs, below awning signs, window signs, signs on sports fields etc. Where signage complies with the acceptable solutions of the Advertising Devices Code the sign is self-assessable and may be erected with a development application to Council. An application for a Development Permit for Operational Work is otherwise required to be lodged with Council where a sign does not comply with the acceptable solutions of the Code. The Local Law manages advertising devices not regulated by the planning scheme including signage on road reserves or of a temporary nature such as AFrames, Event Direction, Real Estate and Garage Sale signs. Under the Local Law these types of signs do not require an application to be lodged with Council provided the signs comply with identified criteria (i.e. such as size, location, maximum number of size etc.).

Winter IS coming – Summer HAS to go!

With Brigid Muir I CANNOT see the point in becoming all hot and cross over the early sale of the spiced sweet, raisin and current bun synonymous with Easter. The only obvious point of difference between these buns and the fruit buns sold throughout the year is the Christian cross emblazoned across the top. The hot cross bun was traditionally eaten on Good Friday in Christian households, but the big supermarkets have launched their sale seemingly earlier over recent years with the buns now consumed by many, not just exclusively those of the Christian faith. This year, the hot cross buns appeared in Coles and Woolworths immediately after Christmas Day. Technically, the buns are over four months early. Could this be Coles and Woolworths having an April Fools joke on the Australian public, with Easter Sunday actually falling on April 1 this year? The early arrival of the Easter bready treats created a furore with some angry shoppers heading online and posting to the supermarkets’ respective Facebook pages that this move was sacrilege, greedy and profit mongering. Others probably wrote along the lines that Jesus was weeping. Personally, I cannot really fathom why this is such a contentious issue. If you don’t like them, don’t buy them. Vote with your feet and boycott the product. Supermarkets’ supply of food responds directly to consumer demand. As a consumer, you have the power to control what is available at your local store by what you choose to spend your “hard earned” on. Quite frankly, I think it is rather absurd to become all hot and cross over a bread product. I’m not partial to them. Nutritionally, they are not a good choice of snack, with the fruit, water and wheat the only healthy ingredients. Store bought hot cross buns contain fat; many scary numbers, which indicate a large presence of chemicals and preservatives; palm oil; and sugar. Essentially, they are lumps of lard and carbohydrates, wrapped up in a plastic bag. Eat too many of these buns and you will start to resemble one! A handful of raisins and currents would be a healthier treat. So, have your bun or boycott. Ultimately, it will be the consumer who drives how soon they will appear on supermarket shelves next year.

Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank® branches

What makes a successful business? You. You work tirelessly to ensure your business succeeds. The long days and the longer nights. You never stop thinking about what you can do to make it better. Every decision is important. And every step is considered. Including choosing the right bank to help manage your money. At Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank® branches, our small business specialists deal directly with you. We appreciate that your business is your livelihood, and we respect it as such. Because when we help your business succeed, we know we’ve succeeded.

IF you don’t have a nest egg saved up or an equity partner, then you may need to borrow to finance your purchase. That’s when it’s time to call your local banker. Your branch will need key financial information about the business, including profitability, cash flow, sales forecasts and growth potential. Your business banker will look for a sound business with healthy cash flow to ensure you can repay the loan. You’ll need some equity in your business by investing your own money. And you’ll usually need to provide security for the loan, such as a residential property, business assets or other assets, like a share portfolio. What you’ll need • A full tax return for the business for the last financial year. • Details of your qualifications and any previous experience in running a business. • Information about your personal assets and liabilities. • Details about the equity you plan to invest in the business. • Depending on your experience and the profitability of the business, you may also need to put together forecasts of expected profit and loss and cash flow for the first two years. Pitfalls to avoid • Leaving it too late. It can take time for your banker to assess the proposal. Leave yourself

time to put your application together and secure finance before you need to sign on the dotted line. • Too little financial information. Your banker needs all the key numbers to make a decision. Cutting corners on your application could mean you end up gathering more information later. •Not borrowing enough. A lack of money to keep the business going is a common cause of business failure. You need to ensure you have enough capital to feed your business from day to day, without starving it of cash flow. At the Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank we specialise in working with local businesses of all sizes. SUNNY COAST Accountants is the talk of the town lately, after opening their new office in Wimmers Lane. Have you dropped in to meet the girls yet? Out of a vision to offer proactive end to end accounting and business advisory services Jody and Sarah created Sunny Coast Accountants. “We are proud to offer a friendly and approachable culture in our firm and pride ourselves on having an open-door policy, making our clients feel welcome and relaxed,” said Jody. Jody is a Chartered Accountant with more than 25 years experience. Her passion is helping small to medium businesses to grow and reach their full potential. She is a mum of 3 kids, and knows how important it is to get the right balance between work and family life. Originally from Sydney, Jody has worked in firms from the CBD to the Blue Mountains, with experience ranging from a publicly listed construction company to cafes, retail stores, sporting clubs and everything in between. She left the hustle and bustle of the big smoke and spent a year travelling around Australia with her young family, before settling down on acreage in the Pomona area. Sarah started her accounting career after graduating from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2009 with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. She started in a large firm on the coast specialising in Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs). It was here she found a passion in helping clients to prepare for, and enjoy, retirement. SMSFs are a fantastic vehicle for clients to gain control of their future, minimise tax and have a freedom of investment choice. Sarah attended both Cooroy State School and Noosa District State High School and lives on acreage with her young family just outside of Cooroy. After 6 years working down the coast Sarah decided to relocate to a firm closer to her home town of Cooroy. It’s here where she gained her vast knowledge of the small business world. Working closely with small business is when she realised the benefits that small businesses

can gain from the assistance of a proactive accountant. This shared realisation has since led Jody and Sarah to open their own firm, based on a vision to provide proactive Business Advisory and SelfManaged Superannuation Fund services. Regulation changes from the 1st July 2016 limited accountants’ ability to provide valuable advice on client’s SMSFs. Sarah has since completed her CPA and further study requirements and is now an Authorised Representative of SMSF Advisers Network, Authorised Rep No. 001258650. This enables Sunny Coast Accountants to continue to offer our clients a complete SMSF advisory service. “We are also Xero Partners and we embrace ‘the cloud’ priding ourselves on being up to date with the latest technology and training. Want to move with the times, but not sure how? We have all the latest training and software and are here to guide you through the whole process step by step. How to deal with financial stress - nearly 1 in 3 affected Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* SEE how financial stress is impacting people's physical and mental wellbeing, and what steps you could take to turn things around. Close to one in three Aussies is feeling the pinch financially, with money worries reportedly leading to sleep loss, conflicts in relationships, isolation, as well as a range of other things. These were the findings from the inaugural Financial Stress Index, compiled by global research firm CoreData on behalf of Aussie group, Financial Mindfulness, which indicated financial stress is not only being experienced by low-income households in 2017. We check out some of the statistics from the research, what defines financial stress, and what steps you could put in place to potentially improve your financial position and overall wellbeing. Statistics from the Financial Stress Index revealed the following about financially-stressed Aussies: More than 66% felt money worries led to feelings of fear, anxiety and/or depression; More than 60% felt their physical health was affected by financial stress; About 75% said they ar-

gued about money with their partner or family; More than 70% said they had problems sleeping due to money concerns; Nearly nine out of 10 said they often avoided social functions due to financial stress. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are two financial stress indicators—these include financial-stress experiences and missing-out experiences. Some examples of financial-stress experiences include: You’re unable to pay various bills on time; You spend more money than you receive; You can’t raise $2,000 in a week for something important; You seek assistance from friends, family or welfare and community groups. Some examples of missing-out experiences include: You’re not able to afford a night out once a fortnight; You can’t afford a week-long holiday once a year; You can’t afford friends or family over for a meal once a month; You aren’t able to cover any recreational activities. Actions that could help turn things around: Create a budget - Writing down what you earn, owe and spend could help

you to create a workable budget, and at the same time let you quickly identify areas where you could be saving. Save a bit of money regularly - Even a small amount of cash deposited on a frequent basis could go a long way towards your savings goals. In fact, 41% of Aussies say they save just a little at a time. Take cash and leave your credit card at home Credit cards are handy but they’ll often cost you as they typically charge high interest rates on top of the amount you’ve already taken out. Write a grocery list that only includes what you need - Over a 12-month period, Aussies will waste more than 4 million tonnes of food, which is enough to bridge the gap between Australia and New Zealand three times, so it’s worth a thought. Prioritise your big-ticket items - Buying a car, going on holiday, and moving home all within a six-month period mightn’t be financially viable. Spacing things out and creating a manageable goals timeline might help. Put some emergency cash aside - This will help next

time you bust your phone or need a last minute trip to the dentist. Plus, an emergency fund means you won’t have to rely on high interest borrowing options. Talk money with your partner - One in two Aussie couples admit to arguing about money, so if you haven’t already, sit down and make sure you’re on the same page, and that both parties’ goals are being considered. Call other providers You are more than likely to have several product and service providers, and figures show you could save more than a grand annually on energy alone just by switching from the highest priced plan to the most competitive on the market. Consider the value of a back-up plan - Whether it’s life insurance, income protection (which provides up to 75% of your income if you can’t work due to illness or injury), or contents insurance to cover items that may be lost, damaged or stolen, there are a range of insurances that could help should the unexpected happen. Care about your future income - The government’s Age Pension alone is unlikely to be able to cover a

comfortable or even modest lifestyle in retirement, so putting a little extra into super while you have time on your side could reduce the potential of further financial stress later on. Marcus Beach Artisans to Exhibit THE innovative and exciting “Expressions” exhibition by the Marcus Beach Artisans – Jude Tulloch, Kristine Cameron, Julie Hemsley, Mike Wootton and Lee Harrison – will showcase at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, 11A Maple Street, Cooroy, from Friday 6 April until Tuesday 8 May 2018. The 3 painters in the group (Jude Tulloch, Kristine Cameron and Lee Harrison) have produced a series of quiet, meditative seascapes and landscapes symbolic of Noosa and the Everglades and inspired by the natural beauty around us. Sharp contrasts of shadows and play of light on the water effectively create the special mood depicted in these paintings. Sculptor Mike Wootton’s mystical creations feature extraordinarily unique artistic pieces, evoking a spiritual sense of presence, and our photographer Julie Hemsley has an exceptional range of photographs, together with her new book entitled “Pathways”. Please join us from 6.00 pm on Friday 6 April when Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie will open our exhibition entitled “Expressions”, which continues until Tuesday 8 May. Can I move my children away from their other parent? Sometimes, after a separation or divorce, parents want to move to another town or city to have the support of their family or friends. Moving with your children to another town, state or country is known as relocation. If moving is going to limit the time your children can spend with a parent or another significant person in their lives, a court may not give permission to move the children away. The following is an example of how relocation is handled. Jennifer and Justin (not their real names) split two years ago after a 13 year relationship. They have three children: Grace who is 12, Callum who is 10, and Jess who is seven years old. Jennifer and Justin’s separation was fairly amicable, and they obtained consent orders for the care of their children after a mediation. Justin and Jennifer agreed that the children would live with Jennifer, attend the nearby state school and see Justin on the weekends and for dinners during the week. However, Jennifer has recently been offered a new job in Bundaberg, some 250kms away from Justin’s house. Can Jennifer leave and take the kids with her, even if Justin disagrees? The answer is, it depends! Jennifer and Justin will have to go to mediation again to attempt to reach an agreement about the relocation of the children. If they can agree on a new arrangement,

they could enter into a new parenting plan, or sign new consent orders that could be lodged with the Federal Circuit Court before Jennifer moves. This new plan may include longer stays with Justin over the school holidays to compensate for any time he loses with the children because of the move. If Jennifer and Justin cannot come to an agreement about new arrangements for the children, either parent may apply to the Federal Circuit Court for an order. The Court will consider what living arrangements would be in the best interests of the children, and will take into account each parent’s need to move on with their lives after separation. If Jennifer moves without consent from Jennifer or the Court, the Court may require her to return from Bundaberg with the children until an agreement has been reached, or the Court makes a decision. The moral of this story is to seek legal advice before taking steps that will affect the time that your children regularly spend with their parents. For more information about parenting plans, separation or mediation, call us at Cooroy Legal Centre on 5447 7637 or email Jessica Popple at jessica@cooroylegalcentre.com.au. ARCH & I met when I was 15 and Arch 19. My cousin Hazel and I were at the café during the interval of the pictures (called movies today). I said to Hazel “Why is that bloke staring at me?” We had a giggle and went back to the pictures. After the pictures were over we walked down the street and of course, the motor bike boys arrived. I knew them all except Archie. One of them asked me which bike I liked best. I said the Trumpy (which of course was Archie’s bike). From that minute it was Marie and Archie for the next 65 years. I went everywhere on the motorbike with Archie. I was never scared as Arch was a great motorbike rider. Of course he didn’t know the meaning of slow so we were always in the fast lane. Arch bought a brand new Ariel bike which was his pride and joy. We got married when I was 17 and Archie 21. We got a job on a dairy farm at Scotchy Pocket, not far out of Gunalda. We were there for a year or so. Our son Ian was born in the big floods of 1955. Our house was surrounded by water, our car under water, everyone in a panic, with the

baby due and no way to Gympie. Luckily I didn’t worry and the water went down and we made it to Gympie not long after. We moved back to Black Mtn where Arch worked with his brother on the farm. Shirley was born in the big drought of 1956 & 57. No money in farming in the dry time so Arch got a job in the Forestry and so we went to West Cooroy for a few years. We returned to Black Mountain and this time we owned the farm but nothing much else. We built the “Cow Bails” (milking sheds) bought cows, built fences – you name it, we did it. How we did it I’ll never know. I can’t remember Arch & I having an argument in those days. Never had time I guess. Then my sister Joyce became a single Mum and as she had to work, Arch & I took Sharmaigne Rose into our family. We worked like slaves for the next 10 years or so. Kids, growing beans and cows. We were out of debt, owned a brand new ford F100! Everything had finally worked out for us. We finally got the electricity to the area around 1967. Kero lights and Diesel motors to run the milking machines were discarded. What a relief. After 12 years our third daughter Julianne was born in another drought in 1968. Then 4 years after, our daughter Jodie was born. And yes, you might have guessed it was during a cyclone! Archie loved his family and was a wonderful father to our kids. Ian was working in Brisbane and Shirley in Cooroy and we continued farming and bean growing but so many people were giving the cream production away. The butter factory closed in Cooroy so Arch bought a big truck and carted the cream to Gympie. When that wasn’t viable anymore, Arch sold the truck and let the milking cows rear their calves! What a joy not milking cows anymore! Arch got a job in the Council to have a break for a couple of years. It ended up 21 years later when he retired. No one could ever have a more loving husband and father. I was so lucky to have had the love of such a sincere, honest and loving man. They said it wouldn’t last because we were so young – love conquers all. Thank you for all the love and well wishes - they have meant a lot to our family. Marie, Ian, Jodie, Sharry & families. - loving tribute by Achie’s wife, Marie Crawford

COOROY lost one of its well-known personalities on Australia Day when Doug Andreassen passed away. He was the fourth child of Alex Andreassen and Beatrice Bason, born in Gympie and raised along with 6 siblings at Tuchekoi. Doug had attended schools at Bollier, Carters Ridge and Imbil. Doug always had a love for music. He spoke fondly of the times sitting around the radio listening to hill billy and country and western music. Listening to the likes of Tex Morton and Chad Morgan. He would steal his mother’s saucepans, tie some strings across the pot and strum away pretending it was a guitar. When Doug was about 14, he saw an ad for a Tex Morton Guitar, it was love at first sight. He had to have that guitar. Doug picked corn, milked cows, anything to earn some cash. Finally, he got that guitar. Then every Sunday, he would ride his pushbike 11 km to Imbil for guitar lessons. And so his music began. Doug wrote several hundred songs over the years. One - “The Party in the Local Hotel” was recorded by Chad Morgan. His sense of humour was often reflected

in the songs that he wrote. “Stop feeding that Dog Food to Me” was one he especially loved to perform. In the early ‘80s, Doug began busking at the Eumundi Markets and soon became a regular fixture. Singing Joking and Chatting and Singing some more. He loved it. He also entertained at Eumundi’s RV Stopover Bush Ballads and BBQ since it opened in 2014. Doug was a well-known face around Cooroy. He started working at the Cooroy 4 Square (where the Fruit Bowl is now) in 1979 and continued working there for about 16 years until his retirement in about 1996. He could then be seen (along with his barking dog) busking on

the seat in front of the IGA. Doug also volunteered at Kabara, Share & Care, and Noosa Nursing Centre entertaining the residents. On Sunday 28th of January, a well-deserved tribute to Doug was aired on ABC Radio’s Maccas Australia All Over for his contribution to Australian Country Music. Not only will Doug will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce, Daughters Karen Woods, Pauline Andreassen and Sandi Hill and their families but also by anyone who was lucky enough to have known him. He had a big heart, a warm smile, was good for a joke or two and a song…. Not forgetting a great farm yard yodel…. He was somewhat of a legend.

ALONG with the change of ownership of Cooroy Bowls Club comes a new name, plans for a revamp of the premises including a kid’s play room and modernisation of the restaurant and beer garden and an anticipation about bringing the local bowling scene back to life. The Saw & Mill Sports Club has been named for the town’s sawmilling history and new manager Kim Bateman is enthusiastic about her new appointment. “We’re very committed about getting the Saw & Mill running to its full potential as a restaurant and sports bar, a terrific function venue as well as breathing new life into the bowls side of things,” said Kim. “We have a very active bowling contingent in Cooroy and we already have the greens immaculate again. We have long-term plans in the pipeline to keep the competitive, social and barefoot bowling scene happening; which includes applying for some grants to help out the Cooroy

Community Bowls Club. There is a fundraising day on March 4th for a local sports club and we are looking forward to doing more of that.” The Saw & Mill bar and restaurant will be open for dinners from Tuesday to Saturday with both a sit down menu and bar snacks available. IT’S been two and a half years on the road for Women Like Us comedians Ellen Briggs and Mandy Nolan who have chalked up an impressive 72 shows performing to almost 20 000 people from Moree to Melbourne, Townsville to Tamworth, Bundaberg to Brisbane, Surfers to Sydney, Pottsville to Perth! Just 18 months ago they filled Perth’s State Theatre and the Heath Ledger and after requests from fans in WA they made their way back to the Perth Fringe earlier this year where they scored themselves a nomination for Best Comedy Act at what is the world’s third biggest Fringe Festival. Pretty impressive for a couple of wise cracking middle aged mums with too much muffin top and not enough restraint! Women Like Us has found a unique niche in the comedy market, speaking to a demographic of women who don’t always hear their stories told on stage. The two call themselves ‘the bogan woman’s thinking woman and the thinking woman’s bogan’. Women Like Us isn’t just a comedy show. It’s become a movement! The show is an hour of stand up comedy, half an

hour a piece by these powerful, no holes barred, tell it how it is pin up girls for what they call Real Women. ‘We want our comedy to demystify a lot of the garbage that we’re fed about being women’ says Briggs. ‘We tell everyday stories about our struggles, our failure to parent, the beauty industry, getting fatter, strange surgeries, obsessions, frustrations, and at the end of the day ‘who unpacks the dishwasher’. But this isn’t just a show for women This is a show for men who love women. Men who have mothers. Sisters. Wives. And Daughters. Men who work with women. Women Like Us is an opportunity for blokes

to step inside the female psyche and get an insight into what we really think. So often women leave the show declaring ‘I wish I had bought my husband! He needed to hear this!’ Although the show does come with a warning for men who don’t like women. Stay in the car. Women Like Us guarantees an hour of non stop laughter with crowds declaring it the funniest show they’ve seen. Showing at the Majestic Theatre, Pomona (Licensed Venue) on Saturday 21April. Doors Open 7.30pm. Show 8pm. Tix $35 – www.womenlikeus.com.au Or at Pomona Newsagency. For enquiries phone 0422 701 680.

COOROY RAG Women, work and wellness creating a balance that works for you WOMEN are leading busier lives than ever before. As women with careers, as mothers and as carers, it is easy to let self-care slip low on the priority list. So, how do women create a work-life balance that suits their needs and those of their families? On Sunday 4th March, come and hear psychologist Dr Rosie (Bauld) Shiels, and Fiona Shewring, President of ‘Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen’ (SALT) share their experience and knowledge from very different perspectives. Well-known on the Sunshine Coast through her practice, ‘Advance Wellbeing’, Dr Rosie Shiels is passionate about creating happy, healthy workplaces. Through her own experience as a single mother and her work on an International Research Project, ‘Work-Life Balance’, Rosie understands only too well, the complex issues that can be detrimental to women’s health when trying to balance work and home. She will talk about her research and what has helped her find balance in her own life. Rosie has a background in Naturopathy and holis-

tic health. Fiona Shewring is a qualified painter and decorator, trade teacher at Wollongong TAFE, mother, grandmother, artist, and founding member of SALT. Fiona, along with the SALT committee, has been instrumental in creating the world’s first mobile ‘tools’ workshop which has now delivered workshops in over 160 workshops throughout Victoria, NSW and Canberra in schools and communities. In 2014 SALT created the SALT of the EARTH volunteer initiative and has now sent out seven teams of tradies to assist farmers in drought affected areas of NSW and Queensland. Sharing her story and her experience, Fiona will take a look at what it takes to stay grounded in an unsupportive work environment and how to create a supportive network. From trauma to triumph celebrating International Women’s Day FROM TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH: How one woman’s journey inspired a movement from Cambodia to the coast. Join us for an inspiring evening showcasing a worldchanging collaboration which prevents young girls being sold into sexual slavery. Free To Shine and Project Futures are proud to bring activists and survivors of sexual slavery Somaly Mam and Sina Vann centre-stage for this deeply personal conversation that has been the catalyst for a world-wide movement. • Discover the innovative strategies these charities are using to create new futures for at risk children in Cambodia, directly from the founders, Nicky Mih and Clare Pearson. • Hear sexual slavery survivors Somaly Mam and Sina Vann share their experiences in working with over 7000 at-risk women in their quest to eradicate modern slavery.

• Ask questions and explore how you can contribute to the momentum of these ground-breaking projects. This event is in celebration of International Women’s Day and welcomes both men and women. Together we are creating a different future. Noosa’s own Sandy Bolton will emcee the event. About Somaly Mam & Sina Vann: Somaly Mam was sold into slavery at the age of 12. Forced to work in a brothel for nearly a decade, she was brutally tortured and raped on a daily basis. After escaping the industry with the help of a foreigner, she went on to establish safe houses for women and girls escaping situations of sexual slavery and exploitation. For over 20 years, she has provided 7,000 survivors with safe housing, psychological support, medical treatment, legal assistance, education and training through her organisation, AFESIP.

KAREN has worked at Acoustic Hearing Clinics for over 14 years. She a full member of the Australian College of Audiology. Karen knew early on that she wanted to work in health care. Eventually, she found that she attained the most joy through working in the hearing industry. Hearing technology is constantly changing and up to date information is how she best serves her patients. In order to stay on the cutting edge, Karen regularly attends industry conferences. She also attends the AcAud National Congress, conducts clinical research and consumes as much professional literature as possible. Karen attains a lot of personal satisfaction through helping people hear better. Not only are her patients better able to conduct their daily lives, they can also now connect with their friends and family. The joy of those re-established connections makes every hour Karen spends at the clinic well worth it. Technology has improved to such a point that every patient can improve their hearing. This keeps Karen engaged and hopeful for the future of the industry. Hearing loss is often misunderstood. Rather than

experiencing a gradual decline in volume, people actually lose their ability to hear specific frequencies. When a part of the ear or the nerve pathway to the brain is damaged or not functioning properly, the ear cannot deliver sound signals to the brain as it would normally. Hearing loss can affect people in different ways, depending on the cause and type. Some people have trouble understanding speech, especially if there is competing background noise. Others find it harder to hear high-pitched sounds or to listen in a group. Some experience a constant and distressing ringing sound. It’s important not to ignore the early signs of hearing loss. The longer you wait to address your hearing problem, the more difficult it can be to regain what you’ve lost. Even if your symptoms are only mild, early treatment can significantly improve your emotional, psychological, social and physical wellbeing. A hearing test measures the ability of sound to travel from your ears to your brain. Whether you’re experiencing mild hearing loss or a more severe or profound problem, this test will

evaluate your specific hearing issues and identify whether a hearing device will help you. Acoustic Hearing Clinics conducts free hearing checks and initial appointments for customers aged 55 or older. They also offer free services for eligible pensioners and veterans. Hearing aids are an earworn personal device programmed to safely amplify sounds for your specific range of hearing loss. Unlike old-fashioned hearing aids that were large and bulky, most modern hearing aids are smaller and more attractive, with highfidelity sound processing. This means that sounds are analysed, processed and amplified to make soft sounds more audible, loud sound more comfortable and speech clearer. For more information phone Acoustic Hearing Clinic on 5443 6633.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jim and Ruth Grant of Cooroy who celebrated their 60th (Diamond) wedding anniversary with friends and family on February 25. Jim was born in Gympie and grew up at Pinbarren and Ruth was born in Brisbane but they met and married in Innisfail in 1958.

Jim won a parcel of land on ballot and Ruth moved to the area with her family to open a dairy farm. Ruth and Jim reminisced about their dating days and how times have changed. After the couple were engaged Jim was asked to be best man at his brother’s wedding. Although 19 and

engaged, Ruth’s mother would not allow Ruth to take the 3-day train trip to the wedding with Jim as they weren’t married. The couple managed to get their wedding brought forward so Ruth could accompany Jim but due to the last minute train booking they ended up in separate carriages and only met on the platform

when the train stopped at stations along the way. Ruth laughingly calls this trip their honeymoon. When asked their secret to a long and obviously happy marriage, Ruth also jokes (maybe?) that

she’s given in to him for 60 years. Obviously, a sense of humour has played a big part in the couple’s life. Jim and Ruth have four children, 13 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren.

Are You Feeling Your Best? Think back to a time to when you were at your healthiest. Do you still feel the same way? Can you pinpoint a moment in time when your health started to go downhill? Many people have not felt 100% since having a virus or other infection. If you have never fully recovered, your condition may progress from being a short-term acute infection into a longer-term chronic health complaint. Chronic infections can leave you feeling tired with muscular aches and pains and lowered immunity, making you more susceptible to catching every bug that goes around. Even a sniffily nose or cough that doesn’t clear can indicate the presence of a low grade infection. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. It takes a strong immune system to overcome persistent infections. The following herbs and nutrients help boost immunity and support your recovery: 1) Medicinal mushrooms such as cordyceps, coriolus and reishi are potent immune enhancers for chronic or recurrent infections; 2) Astragalus possesses anti-viral activity and assists in the prevention and treatment of chronic infections; 3) Zinc helps reduce the severity and duration of colds and flus, however zinc deficiency can compromise immunity; and 4) Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the immune system. In order to have a healthy, thriving immune system, you need to ensure your digestive system is also healthy. With 70% of your immune system in the gut, the microflora or friendly bacteria play an important role. Specific probiotic strains help to rebuild the disrupted microbiota and act like policemen within the gut, restoring peace amongst the ‘citizens’ of the microbiota. Probiotics have a regulating effect on both disease-promoting and beneficial bacteria. This exciting new news is in contrast to earlier

thoughts that probiotics repopulated the gut by directly replacing any bad bugs living there. Instead, probiotics help to restore the numbers and types of beneficial bacteria unique to you. There can be significant variation between probiotic strains. Different strains not only have different actions in your body, but also deliver different health benefits. Additionally, different doses of the same strain can have varying effects in the body. A trained Practitioner can tailor your treatment by selecting specific probiotic strains at the right dose to address your individual health concerns. A chronic condition was once acute. If your body is unable to successfully recover from an acute infection, it may develop into a chronic health concern that your immune system can’t get the better of. Allowing your body to heal from a chronic infection can take time; the longer you have been sick, the longer you may need to get well again. Whilst you may feel relief in the short term, persisting with herbs and nutrients can provide long term relief from the nagging symptoms you have grown accustomed to. Remember how great it feels to be 100% healthy again! Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. For more information call 0419 668 803, or visit www.nutritionmeans.com.au

Belli old-time dance

Get rid of bad breath YOU know the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover;” well unfortunately we are all guilty of doing just that. Think of how you felt the last time you met someone that had poor dental hygiene and bad breath - was your first thought that they didn’t take good care of their health? If you don’t brush and floss teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath and increases the risk of plaque formation on the teeth, leading to decay and other gum disease. A beautiful clean white toothy smile is something we all aim for and something that is often used by others as a measurement of our overall health. However, looking after your oral health can do more than keep your smile attractive; new research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Dentists recommend brushing the teeth twice daily! Step 1: Flossing your Teeth Did you know it is generally preferred to floss BEFORE brushing so that the fluoride from the toothpaste can better “seep” between the teeth. It will also ensure that any plaque that is “flicked off” by the floss can then be brushed off the teeth! Step 2: Brushing Your Teeth Ensure you concentrate on every section of your mouth; don’t forget your gums and tongue! After brushing, it is important to use a good quality mouthwash for extra fluoride protection on the teeth and disinfection of plaque/bad breath causing bacteria. Don’t forget this final important step! It kills up to 97% of germs left behind after brushing! Keeping your toothbrush safe from germs and working to its full potential! After brushing, rinse your toothbrush under running water!

Store your toothbrush in a clean dry place! Do not share a toothbrush, as this can spread germs! Replace your toothbrush often (usually every 3 months) - after this time, toothbrushes are much less effective at removing plaque from teeth and gums compared to new ones. The bristles break down and lose their effectiveness in getting to all those tricky corners around your teeth. How do I safely whiten my teeth? This is such a common request in the pharmacy and it is important that you consult our pharmacists if you are at all unsure, as not everyone’s teeth are suitable for whitening. If your teeth and gums are not in healthy condition before whitening, the procedure may even cause more damage. Even if there appears to be nothing wrong with your teeth there may be other reasons why whitening may not work or be suitable. If we find there aren’t any appropriate whitening kits for you in the pharmacy, remember artificial whitening is not the only option for maintaining white teeth. For healthier and better looking teeth in general you should: Brush the teeth twice a day for 2 minutes using a fluoride toothpaste; Floss your teeth daily; Chew sugar free gum after meals; Drink water throughout the day; Consume a sensible diet; Visit your dentist regularly; Avoid foods and drinks which may stain the teeth; e.g. herbal/black tea, coffee, red wine, spicy foods like curries, and cigarettes. Did you know - Teeth will last forever if looked after well—tooth loss is not a normal part of ageing! The most common contributing factor to tooth loss is gum disease! Teeth are the hardest part of your body. The first toothbrush was invented in 1770, along with the first false teeth (made from porcelain) The dental drill was invented in 1790; however it was a very slow and painful process with this big and heavy apparatus....much more traumatic than the tools used today! See your LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy or Pomona for more information.

Get Inspired to get motivated WHEN it comes to the safety of our children, the issue of bullying has become a major area of concern for parents. Our schools are trying their best to prevent bullying, but what are parents to do when this is not enough? Inspired Martial Arts is one business that is committed to ensuring kids know what to do when confronted with bullying. At a recent “Back to School” bully defence workshop, head Instructor Craig Barnden outlined how Inspired Martial Arts programs aimed to help kids know how to react when verbal bullying turns into something more physical. Inspired Martial Arts’ aim is to ensure children understand how to avoid confrontations when being bullied, but to also know how to protect themselves should the situation become violent. Inspired Martial Arts put on the free workshop for the community, and plans are already under way for a follow- up event at the start of term 2. They are committed to ensuring children in our area have access to a free anti-bullying course on a regular basis, and intend on holding at least one workshop each school term. Inspired Martial Arts has the areas first purpose built training centre that runs Karate and Fit-

Inspired Martial Arts Junior Dragons with Head Instructor Craig Barnden ness Kickboxing classes for both children and Adults, while the centre newly opened in January this year the classes are growing in numbers on a weekly basis. Our kids have progressed

really quickly with many students well on their way to obtaining the skills needed for their first belt grading. Kickboxing Fitness classes have also proven a huge success

with the Family and Adult fitness classes going from strength to strength, the Family fitness kickboxing class has been a real revelation with fantastic numbers attending these fun fitness classes that are tailored to all ages. In addition to this they are also in the process of offering scholarships to each of the local schools in the Noosa Hinterland area, with a total of ten scholarships offered, giving deserving kids access to Karate classes, uniforms and all belt gradings fee-free for a full 12 months. Next up for Inspired Martial Arts is a free personal safety course. This course is aimed at teenagers and adults, and addresses all areas of personal safety from staying safe when parking at night, to what to do if you are physically threatened. Inspired Martial Arts is fully accredited with peak industry body, Martial Arts Australia. It’s Head Instructor Craig Barnden holds an internationa l l y a c c r e d i t e d 2 nd D e g r e e black belt and has been involved in martial arts for over 25 years. For parents wanting to know more about the benefits of Martial Arts, there is a free eBook that can be downloaded from the website www.inspiredkarate.com.au/ book or phone 0434 105 442.
