Storm wreaks havoc on Cooroy

Cooroy township took the full brunt of last Tuesday’s storm with roofs being torn off, power lines down, trees blown over and property destroyed, leaving many of us in a mild state of shock. It wasn’t long though before the community swung into action with neighbour helping neighbour to clear up the debris. Thankfully no injuries were reported. A big thank you to our Emergency Services who, as always, did such an amazing job, and Energex for their efficient response. It will be some time before it’s business as usual for some of the shops in Maple Street, but in the meantime Hinternoosa is operating from the old E-Noosa premises and Cooroy Shoe Shop from next door to Let’s Talk Hair (opposite the Cooroy Hotel). Cooroy Newsagency and The Endeavour Shop are both working hard to re-open as soon as possible.

Not my fave

IT was an awkward moment last Tuesday night when after lamenting that it would be Vegemite sandwiches for dinner to find myself, an hour later after the power came back on, merrily cooking our steak and veg ON OUR GAS HOTPLATES. I am not good in a crisis, possibly because I’m never prepared. I never have any bottled water stashed away, the pantry is always empty and my torch battery is always dead. So this time, as the kids and I huddled around an old 16 th birthday candle, we made a list of things we need to have on hand next time there’s a power outage. Unfortunately because of the poor quality of the light the list was illegible and apart from the aforementioned water and batteries, all I can remember is chocolate. But I guess if that chap who was in the News years ago, who survived weeks trapped in the snow on a single chocolate bar is true, then we have our bases covered. I’m not the only one in the family who panicked though. It’s amazing the things the kids tell you when there’s no TV or computers working. Let’s just say we still haven’t been able to make eye contact. So there you have it … Storms, Survival and Secrets … Post Traumatic Stress Disorder … Not my fave! Hi Ho! Hi Ho! It’s off to the polls we go, The politicians will be running the show. Taking we voters in their gentle hand, Leading us to the Promised Land. The Liberals will cry “We’ll do a better job”, We’re much more efficient than that Labor mob”. Anna will declare “Look at the good we’ve done”, We surely deserve another long run!” The economy will feature, that never fails, The Redcliffe train line will be back on the rails. The floods were the Government’s fault, the Liberals will claim, This expensive inquiry will find someone to blame. They’ll keep digging up farmland to get at the coal, (Did some farmer mention something about a food bowl??) We’re certainly not broke they’ll say, just a bit short, But look at those lovely things the Government has bought! Like snazzy sports grounds, with the expensive stand, (Did someone mention hospitals? You’re in Fantasy Land!!) They’ll have a solution for everything, they’ll cry loud and long, A solution really plausible, very neat, and very wrong. The Libs say we’re paddleless, up that well know creek, And unless you elect them the future is bleak. They’ll encourage solar panels on roofs, with power for free, Leave room on the roof folks, that’s where water prices will be. The list of promises is endless, the substance is thin, Whatever they promise, the only object is to win. Confusion reigns supreme, as the verbal battles rage, Among the actors and comedians on the political stage. But when it’s all over, and we’ve made our decisions, All we’re going to get is some more politicians. Some say this level of government, for reasons economical, Should be scrapped completely, with savings astronomical. But you’d never get a government, there’d be total resistance, To vote themselves completely out of existence. And lose those lovely jobs; those perks, overseas trips, Those expenses all paid, those regular pay slips. So no matter how logical, and desirable it may seem, I’m afraid, dear citizens, it remains only a dream. Jim Dunstan

The Eumundi Timber Challenge

Chris Etheridge & Paul Curtis IT’S time to pull out those Dunlop Volleys & terry towling head bands. On Sunday, 25th March commencing 9.00am, Eumundi Tennis Club will host the second annual

Eumundi Timber Challenge. Using wooden tennis racquets & dressing in period costume, it is an event that takes you nostalgically back to early days. The Eumundi Timber

Challenge is believed to be one of only a few tennis tournaments held in the world using the weapon of a bygone era. Another major event is the Costa Mesa Wooden Racquet Classic, held annually in Orange County, California. “ The historic timber town & internationally renowned Eumundi is the perfect place for such a tournament. ” I can see an America’s Cup style challenge in the future” Event Manager Paul Curtis said. “Ironically they play at Newport Beach.” Last years inaugural tournament was a huge success, attracting over 60 registered players, and around 200 people over the day enjoying the atmosphere. This years event is expected to be even bigger. Your name on the “Don Napier

Trophy” is etched into the history of the town. This years activities will also include Croquet & Boules for those wishing to try something different. Local business Continuum Antiques.Retro has sourced a 1930,s English oak croquet set originally purchased from Harrods. Like Wimbledon it will become The Eumundi Tennis & Croquet Club for the day. Wooden racquet collector & tournament organiser Chris Etheridge is proud to see his special collection of racquets in use. “It’s a bit like taking your Antique or Classic car to a rally in someways” Chris said. The Discover Eumundi & Heritage Centre has this year put up a display to celebrate the tournament. It features the

history of tennis in the district & the inaugral “Eumundi Timber Challenge. “A sporting event promoting history in our town is something we like to support. Museum manager & curator Wendy Birrell said. The day promises to be full of fun, frivolity & yesteryear charm. All are welcome with lots of free activities for the kids. There’ll be a jumping castle, face painter along with novelty competitions with prizes . Food & refreshments will be available throughout. Bring a picnic blanket & make a day of it. The tennis club & community invites you to experience Eumundi. Anyone wishing to play can register by emailing paulcurtis @reddesertgallery.com.au Registrations close Wednesday 14th March.

Registrations open for 2012 Body Art Carnival ORGANISERS of The Australian Body Art Carnivale have announced that registrations are now open for the 2012 event – taking place in Eumundi on the weekend of May 12 and 13. Australia’s premier body art event, the Carnivale attracts artists and spectators from across Australia and overseas. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the event is centred on competitions in full body art (temporary paint – not tattoo) and face painting, but also includes competitions and exhibitions in wearable art, pavement art, vehicle art and photography. “There are opportunities for artists with backgrounds in visual art, make up and special effects, textile art, street art, graphic art, chalk art and more,” says Danielle. “Just being part of an event like this is a truly incredible experience for artists and a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity,” she says. “We encourage artists to experience the amazing atmosphere of the Carnivale, as

well as competing for over $12,000 in cash and prizes. Danielle encourages painters, illustrators and visual artists to consider the event – even if they have never embraced the competition categories before. “It’s simply a matter of getting familiar with the paint or product and then adapting your designs to a different canvas – that of a body, a pavement or a car bonnet!” She emphasizes that artists in the body art categories can opt to supply their own models, or use models provided by the Carnivale free of charge. Car bonnets are also provided by the event for those entering the Vehicle art competition. Early bird fees are applicable until end of March. As an added incentive to enter early, all competitors who enter and pay in February will go in the draw for some great prizes! For body art competitors (brush & sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting) there are three Snazaroo Prize Packs valued at $150 each. For all other competitors (car bonnet art, wearable art,

pavement art, show & shine, photography) one lucky entrant will be randomly drawn for a fantastic Bundaberg Rum prize valued at $180. Danielle says the event also offers excellent exposure for sponsors with a wide range of sponsorship opportunities on offer. Visit www.australianbodyart.com.au for more info, competition registration, sponsorship opportunities and to sign up to receive eNewsletters in the lead-up to the event. The event also has a Facebook page: Australian Body Art Carnivale. The Australian Body Art Carnivale is a free non-for profit event thanks to the generosity of its funding partners – Eumundi Chamber of Commerce; Eumundi Combined Community Organisation; Eumundi and District Community Association; the Eumundi and District Historical Association; the Original Eumundi Markets; Snazaroo Face Paints; Tourism Noosa; and Sunshine Coast Regional Council (assisted through the grants program).

locality-based opportunities for residents to express their opinions directly to me. That sort of community engagement is also something I would also like to see embraced by a new Noosa Council.” Wellington has long been a staunch advocate for de-amalgamation. “Amalgamation has proven to be a disaster for our region, and it will likely get worse as Noosa is increasingly run out of Nambour. The Noosa hinterland will be far better served if we get a local council back. Five years ago residents could go to the Tewantin chambers and actually talk directly with friendly staff. That is what I want a return to. I want to put the local back into local government. A smaller council can be far more responsive and also more efficient.” Tony Wellington and his family have lived in Tinbeerwah for the past 10 years. He has been a professional photographer, author, artist and filmmaker. His passion for the region is evident in the photographic book “The Colours of

Noosa” which was released in 2006, and also the documentary “Keeping Noosa Natural” which he wrote and directed.

COOROY RAG B O U Q U E T S & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUETS - to the Cooroy Rag for naming & shaming the Peeping Tom article - good to see it wasn’t swept under the carpet!! BRICKBATS to the two teenagers seen ‘guiltily’ running away from the Old Railway Station Gallery just before Christmas by a visitor who reported this to the volunteers on duty. What they had stolen was a volunteer ’s new Smart Phone that had inadvertantly been left momentarily in the old Forge whilst she was helping carry something large from the gallery. Surely some parent must have noticed their kid has suddenly acquired this expensive mobile and wondered where it came from??? Vollies work very hard for the community so this was rather a mean act. BOUQUET again to the two young men from the Cooroy Guardian for clearing debris from the main street to keep traffic moving before emergency crews arrived during our recent storm. Not to mention driving several elderly community members home who were stuck in town. BRICKBATS to ABC coast FM, Mix FM and other radio stations in the Sunshine Coast Area. Eumundi was hit with a severe storm that was heading towards Cooroy. I had a teenager about to board a school bus as the storm hit, as did hundreds of other parents. We have been conditioned by authorities and TV advertisements, to tune into the local radio station via portable battery radios for details of storms. We knew this was on the way because we still had power and were able to view BOM. But when the power went out and we tuned into ABC Coast FM we found that they were broadcasting the cricket. Other radio stations were playing the next song before an update. It was nearly 20 minutes after the main storm had passed that the ABC said that there was a storm and it had already passed Cooroy. If our radio stations are supposed to participate in advertising storm warnings, then the cricket, next song, or advertisement for shower gel should take a back seat. Get it right. A storm warning is just that. It is for immediate broadcast. BOUQUETS to Pomona IGA. We live near Pomona and my daughter attends the Cooroy campus of Noosa District High. After a dramatic bus

ride to Pomona during Tuesday’s storm, she and about a dozen other students got off the bus and took shelter outside the Pomona IGA while waiting for me to be able to reach her and bring her home. Initially the kids all stood outside the store, but when the rain started coming in to the undercover area, the staff of the IGA called all the kids to come inside for shelter. The staff then got the kids Chux cloths to help dry them off and some of them got mops to help clear up the water on the floor due to the kids all being soaked. I think this was a wonderful act of community care and I am so pleased to live in a town that looks out for it’s own. BOUQUET to the Hinterland community for supporting Alan and Toni Gitsham and their butchery. Great meat, great friendly service is still available, pop in and say hello. BOUQUET to Laurie at the Cooroy Newsagent for generously donating literacy resources to the Special Education students of Cooroy State School. BRICKBAT to whoever stole the sale banner and hooks from outside Wildflower Boutique. Shame on you. It cost $80 and had just been bought. Please return. BOUQUETS to the local community and Emergency Services for all the help and support given to us so quickly after the big storm last week. It feels great to be part of such a helpful, wonderful community. Our thoughts are with all the people whose homes and businesses have been affected. - Linda Smith & Staff of Cooroy Shoes & Accessories BOUQUET to the wonderful man who picked up our friendly Border Collie, April, on Wednesday after our electric gate at home decided to reopen as we drove out of the Cugderie Estate. After searching high and low in the estate and door knocking, we recieved a call from the Cooroy Vets. The family is over the moon and the chooks have their best mate home again. April is such a loving member of our family. We’re glad she hasn’t seen the movie Red Dog she would have made it to Cairns by now. - Val and Bill Wilson BOUQUET to Lyn from Cooroy IGA for all the help she offered to us during the storm - Carol, Cooroy SES

news $6.5m for Eumundi Noosa Road LNP Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes said that on the eve of the State Election, the Government announced that funding had finally been approved for major roadworks to rehabilitate the worst section of Eumundi-Noosa Road. “I started campaigning back in 2007 to have this road extensively rehabilitated due to its poor condition and I have had to watch its steady deterioration since then. “Well over $800,000 has been spent just in the last couple of years patching-up that small section of the road between Duke Road and the Emu Mountain roundabout and that has simply been a case of good money being poured after bad. “My persistent scrutiny of this project finally paid off and on the final sitting day of the 53rd Queensland Parliament, an announcement was made that $6.5 million in funding had been allocated with work to begin on the rehabilitation works in June; weather permitting, the work should be completed by the end of 2012. “ Glen Elmes said that the Eumundi-Noosa Road is the main east-west arterial road linking the Bruce Highway, Eumundi and Noosa with many thousands of visitors and locals using the road every day. Once work is completed, they will be able to do so safely. “These rehabilitation works will complement the upgrade to Cooroy-Noosa Road that culminated in over $2 million being spent on safety measures at the intersection of Cooroy-Noosa Road and Sunrise Road”. Glen Elmes said that he was delighted with the announcement and can’t wait to see the ‘Roadworks’ signs go up.

CooroyEumundi Garden Club THE next meeting of the Club will be on Monday 12 March at the Rotunda, Noosa Botanical Gardens, Cooroy commencing at 9.30 am.The speaker will be Ray Seddon from the ‘Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network’ who will talk on the ‘Richmond Birdwing Butterfly’. IN my last column I wrote about the importance of protecting your income and your ability to earn an income. You do this by way of Personal Risk Insurance. This Personal Risk Insurance comes in several forms including Income Protection, Trauma Insurance, and Life Insurance. Last time we focused on Income Protection Insurance and its ability to replace your income should you be unwell and able to work. This time let’s look at Trauma Insurance. It can seem similar to Income Protection however it is generally a ‘lump sum’ paid to an individual when you suffer or are diagnosed with a specific illness. The types of illnesses covered can vary however the common ones tend to be cancer, heart attack, and stroke. A lump sum amount is chosen when the policy is taken and this the amount paid if necessary. This insurance is to be taken on its own or in conjunction with another type of Personal Risk Insurance. Unfortunately, the likelihood of people suffering these types of illnesses is increasing. Fortunately, the survival rate for these illnesses is also high. People however need funds to assist them through this. Therefore, we are seeing an increased demand for this type of insurance. There are also many factors to consider when identifying an amount to insure for. These include: • Possible medical and rehabilitation costs. • Ongoing nursing or carer costs.

• Change of living environment such as moving to better accommodation or home modifications. • Living expenses while you recovering. What we don’t want to see is any of these traumatic circumstances use up equity in peoples’ homes or depleting life savings. Life Insurance is probably the more well known type of insurance. It is generally paid as a lump sum on the death of the person insured. This type of insurance is well known however what common discussion is often around is the amount to insure for. Some want to cover primarily debt while others want to include additional funds. Unfortunately what we see is remaining living family can find themselves in financial difficulty within a short period of time after the death of the primary breadwinner. Trauma and Life Insurance are important. There are many and varied options available and all are best discussed with a professional Financial Planner to assist with correct policy and coverage. If you have any questions about any form of insurance, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigobank.com.au.

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington NEED to vote early?: I have had many inquiries from people keen to vote who are confused about the voting, or who will be on holidays on the State Election day. Anyone who is planning to travel interstate of overseas on or before election day (March 24) can still have their vote by organising a postal vote before they leave. Alternately you can vote early at the Nambour Police Citizens Youth Club, once the Electoral Commission announces who the candidates are. The Nambour Courthouse will not be used as a pre-polling station this election. If you want to organise a postal vote, just contact my Nambour office on 5441 6933 and we can organise a vote application for you. In Queensland we have optional preferential voting at a State level. This means you can vote for one candidate only or you can put a number beside each candidate to indicate your preferences. If you have moved house or you are not certain whether you are on the electoral role, you still have time to update this information - just contact my office for information or a change of address form. Hospital parking solutions: Hospital parking and Nambour town parking have been on-going issues for many people visiting or working in Nambour, so I was pleased to hear that my proposed showground park-and-ride has received preliminary approval. Many of you will be aware that since the Sunshine Coast Regional Council started operating a park-and-ride service for Council staff from the Nambour Showgrounds earlier this year, I have been negotiating with State Government, Council, the District Health CEO and the nurses union to provide the same service for Hospital staff. In the past I was told that the showgrounds site was not available for a park-and-ride service for hospital staff. Preliminary approval has now been given for a park-and-ride for Nambour Hospital staff, and I hope to see this service up and running soon, and the hospital parking congestion eased.

news Committed to a safer community A major safety concern faced by Cooroy residents caused by lack of pedestrian and cyclist access over the rail line that cuts the town in two was raised by Cr Brennan this week with State Government. In a letter to State Government representatives Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan acknowledged community concerns and sought commitment from the State Government to fix the hazard. Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan said this issue has existed for as long as I can remember. “We’ve got a town with a rail line cutting it in two, and no safe cyclist or proper pedestrian access over the rail line. “A two lane bridge is the only means for vehicles to get from one side of town to the other. The only safe means

for cyclists and pedestrians to get across town is via a steep footbridge over the railway. This is challenging Cr Lew Brennan, and inconvenDiv 12 ient for the elderly, people with disabilities and parents with prams. Scouts on the go and car boot sale WELL it was great to get back into the swing of things, and already we are off to a very busy start. On Thursday night the Cubs invested their 3 new leaders (Andrew, Caroline and Leanne) with the help of our District Commissioner Pam Budge, Assistant District Commissioner Joy Coulson, and our Group Leader Elaine Williams. The leaders did a fantastic job on their first day and the kids seemed to take to them well. It was also great to see a few new faces about! On the 25th and 26th of February the Cubs headed off to Dunethin Rock for their first camp of the year. On the subject of camps, the Scouts spent the weekend at Noosa Sea Scouts, with the Toowoomba group. They learnt

about Surf Lifesaving, did a bit of sailing and went on a hike from the spit to the National Park. We would like to send a big thanks to the Noosa Surf Club and the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club for providing a great program with excellent instructors!! What a great start to the year!! For all who are eager to attend the next Car Boot Sale, the date has been set for Sunday March 18th. For anyone interested in a stall please contact Kathy Lavender on 54852368. We hope to see you there, and don’t forget to be nice to your neighbours. Any Cooroy Scout Group enquiries please contact our Group Leader Elaine Williams on 0438 851 474, or visit our website at www.cooroy.scoutsqld.com.au

Arts degree at Queensland University in 1973, followed by a Diploma of Education at La Trobe University in Melbourne in 1974. Jenny taught High School in Heywood, Vic for 12 months before venturing overseas for several years. As a member of Australian Volunteers Abroad, Jenny taught at schools in Sarawak, Malaysia. One family admired Jenny so much they wanted to name their baby girl after her - so they called her “Miss”. Returning to Australia in 1978, she started teaching refugees from Russia, Hungary and Vietnam at the Australian Migrant Education Service in Melbourne. In 1980 Jenny travelled to Thailand with OSB to teach English to refugees at Ban Vinai, a settlement close to the border with Laos. She then spent 2 years working for Save the Children fund at the refugee camp set up by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees on Galang Island, Indonesia. This is where the first boat people, refugees from Vietnam, were cared for before being resettled in various countries throughout the world. One such refugee was Son Nguyen, who settled in Australia, continued his education while working, and graduated as a Civil Engineer from Melbourne University in 1990. Son and Jenny were married in Melbourne on 28 th September 1991 and they have two beautiful children – Lana nearly 19 and Liam 17. This well travelled family have holidayed in Vietnam, Ireland, France and other parts of Europe and have lived in Malaysia, Sydney and even Cooroy, for a short while, but live in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds. Jenny enjoyed tennis, singing, playing piano and guitar, knitting, batik painting, reading and gardening. She volunteered at the

National Gallery of Victoria and enjoyed attending a variety of shows and exhibitions. Although Jenny had some health issues over the last 5 years, it was a huge shock when she became ill and was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne on 10th December, 2011. After several weeks in intensive care with multiple organ failure, Jenny lost her battle for life on 10th January, 2012. Jenny was a loving, generous person who taught and helped people all over the world and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Time is Money BY AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management* Working hours for Australians are getting longer, and they’re less likely to be confined to the traditional nine-to-five working day. In fact, our average working hours are longer than those put in by workers in many European countries – placing added pressure on working parents to juggle their responsibilities. The latest AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report: Race against time – How Australians spend their time, found the amount of time Australians spend at work has increased. In 1985, men working full-time averaged 39.5 hours. Today it’s 42.3 hours, while for women the hours have risen from 36.4 to 38.6. In South Australia, the average for full-time workers is 39 hours per week; almost on par with the national average but higher than the ACT and Tasmania. In addition, working on weekends is almost more common, while many Australians have a weekday work pattern that requires an early start or a late finish, or both. The task of balancing work and family contributed to the report finding that 40 per cent of women and 30 per cent of men are often or always pressed for time. In fact, parents in couple families spend the largest proportion of their day working or engaged in educational activities – 19.2 per cent. This compares to nine per cent for lone parents with dependent children and 13 per cent for partners in couple families with no children. This has an inevitable impact on work-life balance and makes many working parents feel guilty for the amount of time spent

away from their children. Obviously people are working harder than ever to support their families, but what many neglect is to future-proof their income by taking out insurance. Not many people would be able to sustain their lifestyle and pay their bills if they lost their regular income through illness, accident or permanent disability. You can ensure that the return for all your hard work is not at risk through a number of risk protection measures which will provide you with a financial safety net in the event of sickness, disability or death. It will ensure your family will not face the possibility of having to struggle to find money for medical care, rehabilitation or, should the worst happen, funeral costs. It makes sense to have the right cover to ensure your family will have financial support if you die or are unable to work. You can tailor your level of cover and other plan options to suit your own circumstances. If you would like professional advice about which life insurance option is most suitable for you and your family, consider consulting an accredited financial planner. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. news 100 year celebration ONE hundred years brings back many memories, and approximately 180 people came to celebrate the Methodist Church Hall Centenary at the Uniting Church, on January 29, 2012. Past members and ministers worshiped, mingled with friends, and browsed through memorabilia, talking of the “good old days”. As people parted, refreshed and delighted with the day, many were inspired with hope and faith for the next 100 years.

Lily Parsons with Michael Hebron

YR 12 graduate of Noosa High School, Lily Parsons, was awarded the Cooroy Queen Alexander Scholarship of $750 dollars by Michael Hebron of Freemasons Queensland last week. Lily is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Queensland after a very successful school career. Mr Hebron, who presented the award to Lily on senior parade this month, said that it had been a very difficult decision due to the number and quality of the applications. He emphasised that students needed to show a commitment to community as well as their studies but did not have to be the top academic in the school. “It’s all about the whole person,” said Ms Patty Riley, Head of Senior School. Lily, who received an OP2, participated in a broad range of activities and received a number of awards including the Eumundi Young Achiever Award on Australia Day.

HEATHER Stecca and her family moved to the hinterland approx five years ago from Brisbane where Heather had worked for 15 years in the fashion industry and was lucky enough to get a casual position at Lilly Pilly Boutique. “I became firm friends with the owner, Liz Johnson, and always said I would buy the shop if the opportunity ever came up, and now it has,” said a delighted Heather. “I feel so lucky to be able to bring my vast retail experience and my love of fashion to Cooroy and to take over the reins from Liz,

who I know will be sorely missed,” said Heather. Liz has owned Lilly Pilly for 7 years and has built the business up to a thriving boutique, with people travelling as far away as Brisbane and the Southern Coast to check out the latest stock. “I know I have big shoes to fill, however I intend to still cater for the locals by stocking the same fabulous brands that Lilly Pilly has now including Boo Radley, Jump, Cordelia St, Wakee, Sunnygirl, Spicy Sugar, Havaianas and Adorne, and also still cater for the larger size lady where possible.”

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott THE Cooroy Emergency Services have been kept busy in the last several days after a severe storm hit the Cooroy Township on the 21st of February. It seems to be the case that Cooroy has suffered our fair share of natural disasters in the recent past so with heaps of practise the Cooroy SES, Fire Service, QAS and the Council clicked into gear and dealt with the aftermath in a professional and expedient manner. Energex were also very professional in there response considering the magnitude of the task that they faced. Sometimes criticism can be a little premature but in hindsight and after the full picture is revealed the job that everyone did from tarping up business premises, repairing downed power lines, restoring power and the clean up process was extraordinary. Unfortunately several businesses in town lost their roofs during the storm causing severe detriment to stock and of course the conduct of their businesses. I know that I echo the wider community when I say that we wish the businesses a swift recovery so they can get back on there feet as soon as possible. A special thanks to Stay Ryan and his volunteer SES Workers and Lew Brennan who was on scene organising support for the affected businesses. Police have also been kept busy investigating several incidents where neighbourhood disputes have spiralled out of control and ended in violence with several people being assaulted and assault complaints being made to police. Arguments should never get physical and people who resort to violence should be aware that their actions can be deemed criminal should sufficient evidence exist for police to

charge the person and put them in front of the court. Police are not miracle workers when it comes to solving disputes between neighbours. Often, when we are called to such matters the warring parties expect police to be able to flick a magic switch and solve what in most cases has taken years to develop so an easy fix is just not possible. What I can say is that in the vast majority of cases there is one party that is willing to engage in mediation and reasonable in there expectations and then there is usually the other party who is completely unreasonable and unable to comprehend the need for compromise and mediation. The Government offers a service called the Dispute Resolution Centre which will engage with feuding parties and attempt to resolve issues through a process of mediation and compromise. Of course, this process can

only be successful if both parties agree so I would greatly encourage anyone having issues with neighbours or some other associates to contact the Disputer Resolution Centre on 1800017288 for further advice before matters degenerate into possible criminal action by the police. I would also like to thank the three young children, Sienna, Kahlea and Will who witnessed an incident where a car smashed into a parked car on Garnet Street, Cooroy causing substantial damage and shunting it several metres up onto the footpath outside the Cooroy Post Office. The offending vehicle and driver then left the scene without stopping and the quick thinking kids remembered the registration number of the vehicle which then led police to the offender which then had a favourable outcome to the young lady who owned the parked car. Good Work Kids!!

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North SANDBAGGING ... there have been many conversations about sandbagging lately with the amount of rain that fell on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast last month. Many groups throughout the Sunshine Coast, since the beginning of the year, have been putting together working bees to fill sandbags. This year, most of our storm activations have been to divert flood waters from homes – using sandbags and black plastic. Residents who are able bodied should be able to do this for themselves and if you’d like a quick lesson on the best way to sandbag your premises go to www.youtube.com and search under sandbagging. You will find a number of short videos that show you how to prepare yourselves and your homes. In fact, if you are fit and healthy it is your responsibility to prepare your home, yourself, your pets and others to minimise disruption to your lifestyle in times of disaster. Once again, there is a wealth of information on our Council’s website. Go to www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and familiarise yourself with this. Below is a snapshot of what to do in a range of emergencies: In a cyclone/storm tide – run from water and shelter out of the wind; during riverine flooding – stay with friends in high places; in a bushfire – if you are going to leave, leave early; in the event of a tsunami - go inland one kilometre or go up ten metres; in a dam release or burst - get out and move to higher ground. Bad TV reception? IT is not well understood that by living just a few miles from a major TV transmitter digital reception will not be perfect at all time, says Alan Dray of Pinktronix. “Despite having a high powered transmitter just up the road, many parts of Cooroy are in a black spot because their houses are sighted in a signal shadow where the transmission is obscured by terrain or vegetation. Among the many disadvantages of analogue TV when compared to digital is the advantage that analogue generally degrades in visually acceptable stages whereas the digital picture is either perfect or not there at all. “That is, when reception conditions worsen our analogue picture frame may have a bit of snow or other minor imperfection, whereas with the digital picture frame we will get a black screen or a frame with unwatchable pixilation. Given that the sound is also carried digitally the same all or nothing situation applies here too. This phenomenon is described in the text books as the digital cliff edge. An extremely narrow window which separates digital perfect from digital chaos and is defined by bit error rates, modulation error ratios and other gobbledygook. A good TV field strength meter can measure these parameters and accurately predict the likelihood of digital failure for a given location thus offering the consumer a reception choice

based on scientific fact. A commonality among viewers is the frustration Suzy Smith feels when John Brown just a few metres up the road, gets a perfect picture but hers keeps breaking up. In Suzie’s mind it logically follows that with the correct antenna installation she should get a good picture too. However, what they both don’t realize is that Billy’s reception quality is just above the digital cliff edge with almost no margin for error and that Suzie’s, just a few meters away in a depression with trees between her antenna and the transmitter is just below or right on the digital cliff edge. For Suzy, picture failure will be the norm and digital perfection a fluke. “In these situations there is not much an antenna installer can do except experiment with costly masts or if you are lucky, chop the tree or move the antenna. In these marginal situations the most sure fire fix is to take advantage of VAST, the government black spot satellite service, which is free after installation. An antenna check and/ or a full VAST installation is free for those on a full pension with government funded VAST installations being activated after January 2013. There are no other subsidies for the Cooroy area. You may contact Centrelink to ascertain your subsidy status.” For more information about your TV reception see Pinktronix.com.au or call Alan Dray on 0429 834 809 or 5483 4802.

MOST people would have probably seen the television advertisements talking about the Eden Rehabilitation Centre and the fact that we’ve helped thousands of Queenslanders get back on their feet over the last few years. What many people wouldn’t know is that Eden is a community-based not for profit hospital, which arose out of the ashes of the Cooroy Private Hospital (which went to the wall on May 2000), taking with it yet another employer in our beautiful township of Cooroy. Around the same time the banks left town as did the brickworks – Cooroy was struggling. Well thankfully that’s all ancient history now. Eden is thriving and providing specialist rehabilitation services and supporting employment for over 80 members of our community, and spending money in our local community to support a range of local businesses from groceries to pharmacy items. Eden is the only specialist rehabilitation hospital on the Sunshine Coast, and our success has been our Achilles heel. Seeing our success the Buderim Hospital set up their own rehabilitation centre which has severely impacted on our own local hospital. Now the monolithic Ramsay Healthcare has decided to set up a rehabilitation centre in Nambour, not content with their massive market power – they now seek to squash our community hospital in their path. But in spite of the big boys throwing their

market weight around, Eden is determined to continue to provide the only specialist focus on rehabilitation on the Sunshine Coast. Others have rehabilitation as an adjunct to their “main game” of surgical and medical cases. It is a side-line and a distraction in some ways, and represents an add-on. For Eden it’s what we do and is our concentration and focus, and our principle reason for being. We do it exceptionally well because it’s all we do – we specialise in this area of treatment. When you come to Eden you are not lost as a number within a huge hospital structure – we actually know your name and individually tailor programs to suit your needs. We can help you with programs to prepare you pre-surgery; help you with intensive inpatient care post-surgery or adverse incident; and support your ongoing independence through our outpatient programs. So if you need rehabilitation, support the hospital that supports our local community, and whose profits stay in the local community. Ask your doctor for a referral to Eden, and let us show you our local hospitality. If you need rehabilitation services that help you get back on your feet, we are the only specialist rehabilitation hospital that you’ll find on the Sunshine Coast. Remember just tell your doctor – Eden Rehabilitation Hospital at Cooroy is your choice.

A life worth living is a story worth telling HOW can you get your life story put into a book for family and friends to read and cherish? The answer is as simple as picking up the ‘phone and ringing Anne Langdon of Personal History Scribes on 5470 2418. Anne, a retired university lecturer has been writing the life stories of her clients for a number of years, first in Victoria, and now from where she lives on the Sunshine Coast. Anne would never describe the lives of the people whose stories she writes as “ordinary” because every life is unique. Anne’s clients have come from all walks of life. People who had to periously leave the countries where their parents worked in order to escape an advancing enemy. People who left their country of birth to find a new life in Australia. People whose stories include the years they gave to serve their country in time of war. People who built from scratch, successful businesses, and so many more interesting life stories. Every story is as different as every person is uniquely different. Anne says, “to write someone’s life story is a privilege as well as a humbling experience, because for a little while I’ve been let in to another person’s life. And while I’m there, I’m able to get a “feel” for that life, and portray it with integrity. When someone says to me, ‘I’ve been waiting for someone like you to do my story for years, and now I’ve found you’, the tears are very close.” Anne says she has structured her fees well below others in her field. As well, she offers a NO OBLIGATION visit for discussion. The details for contact are: Anne Langdon, Personal History Scribes, PO Box 133, Noosaville, 4566. Phone: 07-54702418. Retirement on the Coast Bladder or bowel problems?

BLADDER and bowel problems can be a cause of concern in any age-group, but especially in the Seniors population. Symptoms of bladder or bowel dysfunction are: Increasing need to go to the toilet; Rushing to the toilet with sudden urges; Leakage of urine with rushing to the toilet or coughing/sneezing or jumping; Difficulty emptying the bowel; Prolapse; Chronic urine infections; Inability to hold on to “wind”. These symptoms should not be ignored as they can certainly get worse with aging. When women reach menopause, they often notice changes in their bladder and bowel function. The reasons for this are: Weak pelvic floor muscles: as we age, there is a decrease in muscle fibres and therefore strength. This loss of strength combined with previous damage from childbirth results in increasing bladder and bowel dysfunction as the pelvic floor muscles are essential for supporting these organs; The bladder be-

comes less ‘stetchy’: the bladder is like a balloon, that expands as it fills and then returns to a small size after voiding. As we age, the bladder is less able to expand to the extent that it can when we are younger; Hysterectomy: following hysterectomy, some women develop problems with bladder leakage. This may be due to a loss of the internal support structures of the bladder or due to weakness in the pelvic floor muscles post surgery; Constipation: people who are constipated strain to pass a bowel motion. This straining weakens pelvic floor muscles and can lead to prolapse; Weight Gain: as people become less active, they tend to gain weight. This extra weight results in increases force being placed on a weakened pelvic floor; Chronic medical conditions: medical problems that result in excessive coughing or sneezing can further weaken the pelvic floor muscles. The good news is that many bladder and bowel problems can be effectively managed and often cured with physiotherapy and assistance from continence nurses. Physiotherapy involves assessing the cause of the problem and then implementing the appropriate treatment. This could include pelvic floor exercises, bladder retraining, behaviour retraining, dietary advice, toileting techniques and electrical stimulation. If you have any concerns about your bladder or bowel function, please speak to a health professional as soon as possible. Rebecca Steele operates Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556

Medical Moments RECENTLY I felt a bit unwell, just a little crook, So I thought I’d better let the doctor have a look. The doctor he examined me, and slowly shook his head, Checked his notes again, then turned to me and said, “I think we’ll give your carotid, an ultra-sonic check, That’s the major artery, that runs along your neck”. Then the specialist said, with true bedside pessimism, “I have also located, an abdominal aneurysm.” Both of these turned out well, and happily in the clear, And then it appears my colonoscopy date was very very near. The surgeon and my bottom, have been friends for many years, (What a way to earn a living, looking at people’s rears!!) I’ll be good and dutifully swallow that dreadful Fleet, (Why can’t it be flavoured with whisky, or even something sweet??) I’ve been checked for everything from pregnancy to worms, And drinking lots of home brew, to flush out all the germs. I’ve passed my date for ‘best before’, and ‘use by’ date, of course, I hope my lifetime warranty, is currently in force. Jim Dunstan

dining & entertainment A Film Society in the hinterland CINEMA Pomona is a non-profit community film society, which was set up by lovers of good cinema, with the aim of providing members with an experience of high quality films from around the world. Its commitment to world cinema is shown by the fact that over the next six months, it will be screening films from Australia, the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Morocco, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong and Chile. In the most part, Cinema Pomona selects recent films, but it also presents each year a few older ‘classic’ films. Selections for the coming months include the Noel Coward British classic, Brief Encounter (1945), and The Treasure of the Sierra Madra (1948), with the one-and-only Humphrey Bogart. On January 31 we screened the 1946 Australia classic The Overlanders, with Chips Rafferty. The female lead in that film was Daphne Campbell, whose daughter and her husband were present at the screening. Members and visitors had an interesting chat with Daphne’s daughter before and after the show. Daphne Campbell is now 88 and living at Noosa. Most of the films presented by Cinema Pomona are not ones with which the general movie-going public would be familiar. Though not comfortable with the ‘art-house’ label, it avoids popular Hollywood romantic comedies and the frenetic, computer-enhanced action movies. Even great films like The Kings Speech and The Iron Lady are not on

dining & entertainment Stars ahead for Maison de Provence

COOROY RAG ERIC and Francoise Pernoud are ecstatic to be welcoming Michael Jakovljev, 2 star Michelin French chef, into their very popular restaurant Maison de Provence, in Wattle Street, Cooroy. Michael was recently working at The Blue Angel in Noosa, and before moving to Australia worked in many exclusive internationally renowned restaurants in France, including Les Trois Rois. His expertise and knowledge in French cooking has blown Eric away. Some lucky Cooroy locals had a chance to try out some of his dishes on Valentines night, when he was a guest chef earlier this month. Now we all get to try his masterpieces Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The menu is a set price, with a choice of 2 entrees, mains and desserts, and Francoise is sure once word gets out it won’t be long before every night will be fully booked. He will also be doing Sunday brunch with Eric, pastry chef extraordinaire, every Sunday from 10am. This

from all over the country to ensure they are only working with the best and freshest ingredients. She feels the restaurant is ready to take it to the next level, and even juggling her 5 children, which includes 2 year old triplet boys, she believes they are up for the challenge. Francoise believes Cooroy township which she loves could only benefit from the success of Maison Michael will consist of 5 courses of delectables being brought to your table. The restaurant is BYO, so diners are encouraged to bring their favourite wines, which will be served to you with no corkage fee being charged. Francoise says the brunch will be a leisurely affair, where you can while away the morning in the company of good friends. Eric is feeling extremely fortunate in securing Michael, as 2012 is gearing up to be a very busy year. As well as the restaurant becoming more and more popular, Eric will be joining Zumbo at this year ’s Food and

& Eric Wine Festival in Noosa, and has been headhunted to appear as a guest chef on this season’s MasterChef TV show. Eric has been a little hesitant in accepting the invitation from the popular television series, as he doesn’t want to see Maison de Provence get too big. His focus has always been on quality not production, but Francoise is working on him to show that this opportunity can only be a good thing. Francoise knows there is no way the quality of the food would suffer, as she sources produce not only locally but

de Provence, as by bringing more people into the town, it would be good for all businesses. So with her innate French style and vision for the future, coupled with Erik and Michael’s expertise in the kitchen, she believes there can only be positives ahead. Maison is open 7 days. pomona Expressions of interest Student Leaders acknowledged called for Men’s Shed

COOROY RAG

POMONA & District Community House Inc. is seeking interest and/or membership from men in a new project called Men’s Shed Pomona. Surveys have clearly identified the need for a Men’s Shed in the Pomona District. While the Lawson Shed (an initiative of the Pomona & District Community House which opened last May) has filled a much needed gap for community activities such as Pilates, Zumba, and our Community Kitchen, it was realised that a separate and much larger facility would be needed to fulfil the requirements of a Men’s Shed. Men’s Sheds are springing up all around Australia. They provide a space for men to work together on projects that range from furniture restoration, fixing lawn mowers, to making possum boxes. Perhaps more importantly, in a Men’s Shed, blokes, often unwilling to ask for help, can be supported through difficult times such as retrenchment, relationship breakdown, illness and loss of contact with children following a divorce. Men’s Sheds have proved to be one of the most powerful tools we have in helping men to once again become valued and valuable members of our community. The Pomona & District Community House is currently negotiating with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to develop a site just outside Pomona. To register your interest or to find out about the next meeting phone Brian Lawson on 54852427 or email brian@pomonacommunityhouse.com.au.

HARDWARE POMONA State School’s 2012 School Captains and Student Leaders were officially recognised at the school’s first parade on Friday February 3. The Honourable Mr David Gibson presented the students with a certificate and their leadership badges after providing them with an inspiring speech about the true meaning of leadership. He impressed on the students, the importance of being able to make the right decision even if it isn’t the popular one. Pomona’s School Captains for 2012 are Danielle Sealey and Jake Henry. They are well supported by the Student Leadership team; Amelia Connolly, Katie McLeary, Freya Ramsay, Dante Basset, Jye Bunter and Daniel Kemp. After the parade Mr Gibson joined members of the school community for a morning tea.

‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures’ MAKE a note in your diary. The Pomona & District Community House is hosting a very special International Women’s Day morning tea, on Thursday 8th March at the Lawson Shed in Pomona. What impact does having an education make on a girl’s life - both here and overseas? You are invited to this inspiring and entertaining morning to come and hear the ideas of some of our youngest community members, to view their artwork and to contribute your thoughts.

Listen in delight to the beautiful voices of the women of the Pomona Choir. Guest Speaker: Marion Allan from the Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ program. Venue: Lawson Shed, Pomona; Date: Thursday, 8 th March, 2012; Time: 10.00am – 11.30am; Cost: $10.00 per head. RSVP Pomona & District Community House, 54852427. Be bold when others are fearful FROM July 2011 to January 2012 our family enjoyed some time off and travelled around Australia. We were in a self imposed news vacuum and subsequently it was disappointing in February 2012 to hear pretty well the same news that we were hearing back in June 2011. The property media was largely devoted to gloom stories … consequently people spent 2011 living in fear of the Europe crisis, the affordability crisis, the cost-of-living crisis, the strong Australian dollar crisis, and the what-if-home-values-collapseslike-they-did-in-the-US crisis. The what-if-theworst-happens psyche has galvanised consumers into inaction in 2011. One of the greatest quotes I have read over the years was Warren Buffet when he said “Be fearful when others are being bold and be bold when others are fearful” Having had time to reflect on the market we believe the dark economic clouds are now beginning to part. Noosa High To celebrate 50 years

Chris Roff holding the 25 years magazine with attendees of intial meeting NEXT year it will be time to celebrate 50 years of excellent education at our local Noosa District High School, which be-

gan its life as Cooroy High School, and was officially opened on 25th May1963. An initial meeting was held at the end

of January to get the ball rolling and was attended by some past students, Principal Chris Roff, teachers, and auxiliary

staff. There was much discussion about ways to celebrate and it was agreed that an official committee needed to

be established as soon as possible. There are generations of local families who were educated at Noosa High and no doubt have a few stories to tell. There are also many people who have moved on but would be keen to celebrate. Elizabeth Garbacz is heading a committee that will create the event to celebrate this very important milestone. She is the right person for the job having taught here for over 25 years, sent her kids here and completed her high school education here. Anyone interested but unable to attend the meeting may contact Liz Gabacz via email at egarb2@eq.edu.au

Dagun Station Growers Market THE Dagun Station Growers Markets are held every Saturday from 2pm. Well done if your garden has overcome the stresses of summer. Temperature extremes, rain, mildew and prolific bug invasions can tend to wear you down. Hang in there as Autumn is on its way! This means there is a move away from the tropical greens you have been seeing at market towards more conventional crops that require a cooler season to grow locally. This means greater lettuce, spinach and tomato varieties with beans and peas starting to appear. Also ripening are the early avocadoes with capsicums and eggplants to continue. There is still a wonderful variety of tropical fruit with local mangoes, persimmons, lychees, figs, citrus and always a regular, are the spray-free bananas. Have a look what else March has in store as a regular feature of your market shop: Mar 3 Basil, beautiful Basil. There are how

many varieties? Mar 10 Brix testing – find out how nutrient rich your food really is. Mar 17 Admire the pastel work of award winning local artist Narelle Webber Mar 24 Land for Wildlife – find out how to join and what’s involved on environmental issues in your backyard. Mar 31 It’s the beginning of Autumn, what are people planting now? Have you taken the kids for a ride on the Rattler lately? Short rides are available. Get on at Dagun at 2.30pm then travel to Amamoor for the turnaround back to Dagun by 3.15pm. The ride is only $16 for an adult with kids under 4 free. Discounts for kids and seniors. You can pick up some local bread and cheese, fruit and veg, wine and song and enjoy a simple day out every Saturday from 2pm.

I READ recently where someone had to get rid of their roosters - after a neighbour complained. It’s a pity the council regulations of having a large rural block doesn’t extend to being permitted to keep dogs. We live on an estate of mini-acreages and I’d swap a rooster any day for the yapping howling dogs we have to put up with. And several places aren’t content with just one dog - they have two or three! Our attempts at a quiet morning walk usually mean we have to put up with small terriers getting hysterical as we go past or else larger dogs snarling and barking. And the number of dogs who howl and bark non-stop when their owners go out has to be heard to be believed. I’ll take the roosters any day!! J. Campbell

Football Boots THE heat of summer is drawing to an end and so starts the time of training for all codes of football, and we have already signed-on and bought the footy boots from the sports store for our kids too. For coaches, trainers, players, parents of young players and health care practitioners, it is helpful to understand the role of the football boot and its’ construction in both causing and preventing foot or lower limb related injuries. Firstly we have the type or construction of boot sought by the player (hopefully not for colour). Depending on your choice you can get your grip from either studs or blades, and these are accommodated on the boot by the boot being constructed with a flat footbed. This unfortunately creates a lack of support for the mid foot (longitudinal arch), commonly allowing for excessive pronation (inward rotation and collapse of the arch) and little to no cushioning to absorb impact shock at heel strike. These factors can and commonly do lead to the injuries we see from participation such as heel pain, shin splints and knee pain. In addition to this, footy boots are ‘low profile’ meaning they have a lack of height at the heel counter and thus provide little support for the ankle and rearfoot. This results in an even greater likelihood of injury, primarily sprained or twisted ankles due to the twists and turns inherent in the sport. Better quality boots are generally made from soft hides, these are usually only available in adult sizes, and less expensive versions from synthetic materials. As the leather stretches and gives a little with wear, the practice of purchasing shoes too small at the start of the season to ensure better fit in the long term is common place amongst senior players. Synthetic footy boots do not stretch and will remain the correct fit, hopefully giving better response between the foot and the turf, and help hold the boot on the foot during play. The second issue is focussed on correct fit

for the boot. If it is worn too tight, the functionality and biomechanics of the foot are altered and can be quite significant, hindering ball control during play and / or causing injury. Common problems from undersized footwear include forefoot pain and black toe, and eventually stress fractures. Achilles tendonitis can also result from the top line of the tight shoe cutting into the rear of the foot and even swelling over the tendon. Conversely buying boots too big can also cause problems of blisters from the foot moving too much inside the boot, possible tripping or going-over on the ankle, and loss of ball control. This has unfortunately become common practice by parents of young players who are trying to accommodate their childs’ rapidly growing feet and avoiding having to buy costly replacements by extending the wear life of the shoe. Shoe fit affects the placement of the studs, which is very important for foot health. A well fitted boot will have studs behind and in front of the big toe joint. A shoe worn too big or too small will result in a stud being directly under the big toe joint, affecting the joint from repetitive shocks and stress experienced during training or at games. Another area of fit that should be considered is the way the boots are laced, whereby wrapping lacing under the foot to reduce heel slippage should not be required if the boot fits well in the first place, and the use of a tongue depressor pad will prove much more effective in reducing motion around the heel. Hopefully having yourself or your childs foot correctly fitted for footy boots this season will help keep those niggling injuries at bay and reduce the risk of more serious injury related to footwear issues. For more advice, contact your health professional or qualified shoe fitter. Craig and Rebecca Steele own Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Overcoming obstacles in exercise routine THERE are times in everyone’s life when exercise takes a back seat and it can be hard to regain your enthusiasm. Mental and physical lethargy can cause mayhem to an exercise regime. Whether you are trying to get back into a training regime after some time off or have just hit a wall where you can’t seem to improve your performance, there are some easy steps to overcome your exercise blues. Physical tiredness, aches and pains, mental fatigue, changes in appetite and injury can all make you doubt your ability to get back to where you were at your best. Eating the correct foods and enough food, getting at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep and drinking at least 1.5 litres of water are essential to be at your exercising peak. But sometimes when all of these

things are perfect, we still hit a training wall. Getting back on track and over the hump can seem overwhelming but personal trainer, Lee Smith of Make a Difference Health & Fitness offers a few tricks to help. “Take a break and literally stop training for a few days. This gives your muscles a chance to recover and feel fresh again and the break gives you psychological relief. Do something different by mixing up your routine for a couple of sessions a week. You could completely change from one type of exercise to another or just change some other aspect of your exercise such as the route you take, the distance or or time you spend on your routine. “Remind yourself why you are exercising. Is there a special target date such as an event or specific goal such as weight

Food for life FOOD for Life – the ancient Hindu tradition of Ayurveda What we eat affects our body, mind and spirit’ is the mainstay of the ancient Hindu (Indian) tradition of Ayurveda. Surinder Dhawan owner of and chef at Saffron Namaste restaurant in Pomona, is a passionate advocate of this 5000 year old practice. While Surinder is known for creating exquisite taste sensations, another less well-known passion is his love of using food to contribute to our overall health and wellbeing. According Ayurvedic tradition, there is a very strong link between food and medicine. Ayurveda – ‘Ayur’ means life and ‘Veda’ means knowledge – is more commonly known as the ‘Science of life’. On Monday 12th March at Saffron Namaste restaurant, Surinder will give a talk on the principles of Ayurveda. He will explain how what we eat affects our body, mind and spirit and in reverse, how the state of our mind and spirit affects our body. Ayurveda tells us that food is more than just a source to fill our empty stomach. Food sustains us physically, mentally and spiritually. For over 5000 years Indians have developed a very refined and intricate system of linking and understanding the relationship between food and medicine and the need to balance our food intake. Also present at this special event will be two experts from Medicworx (Family Practice) who can answer questions relating to food and health. Leanne Levin, a qualified naturopath and dietitian with a special interest in Ayurvedic medicine and local GP Dr Maura Harvey will offer their time and expertise to complement Surinder’s extensive knowledge. During the evening Surinder will demonstrate how the medicinal qualities of a broad range of herbs and spices can be used to our benefit, making our food more interesting, tasty, flavoursome, appealing and healthy at the same time. And yes, there will be an opportunity to taste samples of Surinder’s Ayurvedic cooking. Come and find out about Ayurveda, have your questions answered and put yourself on the path to a new way of healthy eating. A joint venture of Saffron Namaste, Medicworx and Pomona & District Community House. When: Monday 12 March, 5.30pm – 7.30pm; Where: Saffron Namaste Restaurant, 3 Memorial Avenue Pomona; Cost: $2.00 Donation. Bookings are essential, phone Pomona & District Community House on 5485 2427.

loss? Focus on the goal and try and remember how far you’ve come by looking back at photos or thinking about how you have improved. Focus on how great it feels when every part of your body is working in tune and keep this as a goal also. But most of all, be clear about your training plan. Map out your training for the month ahead, set targets and keep records that you can refer back to keep up your motivation.” “Sometimes the easiest thing you can do is to get a training partner or a personal trainer who can guide you. This can give fantastic results as it can help break bad habits, refocus your mind or find new approaches you haven’t tried.” If you think a helping hand will help you, give Lee a call on 5442 6179 or check out their website on www.madhf.com.au.

Meet Trigger and his new pal Toby

THESE two Shetland ponies, along with 14 other horses, are part of the Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) horse family and have settled in well at their new home at North Arm. A team of volunteers has been busy establishing the new centre in preparation for all the programs which recommenced on Monday 20th February. It means that over 180 clients from all over the Sunshine Coast who have been unable to access these programs for more than 6 months will now be literally, back in the saddle once more! Sunshine Coast RDA has been able to secure a 24 acre parcel of land which will be the new and per-

manent home for Sunshine Coast RDA. Settlement was finalised on Friday 10th February and we’re all rearing to go! Yee-haa!! Sunshine Coast RDA would like to thank and acknowledge the very generous support of Sunshine Coast individuals, families, businesses and the media in helping them to achieve this permanent home. If you’d like to know more about Sunshine Coast RDA and the programs we offer for therapy and recreation, or you would be interested in joining our team of volunteers, visit our website www.sunshinecoast rda.com or ph Jan 5447 6604, Julie 5442 8887 or Matty 5447 0450.

Do we really need to take vitamins and/or supplements? A GLANCE down the nutrition aisle of any supermarket or pharmacy illustrates how big – and baffling – the supplement industry has become. “We live in a world where we think we can quickly fix everything with a pill – late nights, long working hours, stress or a poor diet. We think popping a supplement will fix all that. But that’s not necessarily the case,” says Terrill Bruere, Dietitian at Jean Hailes for Women’s Health. Bruere is also co-author of an article in the latest edition of the Jean Hailes magazine that finds there are many myths around supplements. Here we look at the top ten myths about supplements. 1. More expensive brands of multivitamins are better – The quality of supplements varies widely and those that are practitionerstrength and prescribed by a health professional may be superior. “But in the case of most general purpose multivitamins, the cheaper brands are likely to be just as good,” says Bruere. “Expensive brands might put in a few extra ingredients but they’re usually things you can do without.” 2. Nutrients in supplements are more potent than the nutrients in food – The body usually absorbs nutrients better from food because food contains chemicals that aid the absorption of nutrients. “Sometimes if you take a particular vitamin, purify it and put it in a concentrated or larger dose, as in a supplement, it can have a different effect on the body, too,” says Bruere. 3. A multivitamin will compensate if I don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables – “Remember that supplements are just that – a supplement to the recommended amounts of nutrients you should be having,” says Jean Hailes naturopath Sandra Villella. “Fruits and vegetables provide a lot more nutrients than a multivitamin – such as fibre, antioxidants and other phytochemicals.” 4. More is better when it comes to supplements – “Every nutrient has a recommended daily allowance so more isn’t always better. Sometimes you may need increased doses of certain nutrients for therapeutic benefits but that should be recommended by a health professional. You shouldn’t treat yourself,” says Villella.” 5. There are no risks in taking over-thecounter nutritional supplements – “People see supplements as ‘natural’ so assume they

can have as many as they like without causing any harm. That’s a myth,” says Villella. “Some vitamins can be stored in the body and become toxic at high levels.” For example, vitamins A, D, E and K are stored in fat and liver cells. Too much vitamin A can be harmful during pregnancy while excess vitamin E can cause headaches, fatigue and gastrointestinal problems. 6. It’s okay to self-diagnose and treat vitamin deficiency – “If you have a health problem, you shouldn’t self-diagnose or self-prescribe,” says Villella. “See a health professional and check there is not a bigger issue that needs to be addressed.” 7. If I’m tired I must need an iron supplement – “Women often think tiredness can be solved with an iron supplement. But you can be low in iron for different reasons, such as coeliac disease or heavy periods. If you’re really tired it should be medically investigated,” says Bruere. 8. I don’t need to worry about iodine deficiency – “Iodine deficiency has become a public health issue in Australia in recent years,” says Bruere. “Previously the dairy industry used products containing iodine so we got a regular supply through milk. When that practice changed, iodine deficiency resurfaced.” Iodine helps the production of thyroid hormone and is particularly important during pregnancy. So during pregnancy a multivitamin containing 100-200 micrograms of iodine may be needed. 9. I can get enough vitamin B12 from eating mushrooms – Vitamin B12 is important for healthy growth and development and for the production of blood cells. It is only found in animal products – meat, seafood, eggs, cheese etc. “For a while it was thought we could get vitamin B12 from bacteria in mushrooms but it’s not in a form that humans can use,” says Bruere. So strict vegans or vegetarians may need vitamin B12 supplements. 10. Children who are fussy eaters need supplements – “There are more supplements on the market targeting children, but even if children are fussy eaters they are rarely malnourished so won’t need a multivitamin,” says Bruere. If you are worried about your child’s nutrition or growth, see your GP. For more information on nutrition go to www.jeanhailes.org.au

health World Day of Prayer SOMETHING special happens on the first Friday of March each year. It is the World Day of Prayer – a Christian prayer movement from a women’s perspective. Its roots go back to the 19th century. From 1927, WDP has been celebrated in an ever increasing number of countries. On Friday, March 2nd, 2012, more than 3 million people worldwide, men and women, will be worshiping using a common prayer service booklet. Like a Mexican wave of prayer, the first service will begin at sunrise in Tonga, and move around the world until the sun sets in neighbouring Western Samoa. By then the day will have been celebrated in more than 170 countries. Across Australia over 1300 services will have been held. Each year the service is prepared by a different country. The Christian women of Malaysia have prepared the service for March 2012 - “Let Justice Prevail”. Join in the service at Cooroy Uniting Church at 10.30am. Light lunch to follow.

RSPCA Cent Sale COOROY Bowls Club are hosting a Cent Sale on Sataurday, March 17, to raise funds for the animals in our local Noosa RSPCA Shelter. With no entrance fee, doors will open at 12 noon and draw commences at 1.15pm. Something for everyone. All welcome. For more information phone Kath 5447 2982.

CARDIO Tennis is being introduced at the Cooroy Tennis Club by Club Coach Rob Schmitt Cardio Tennis is a fun, social, group tennis-fitness program for people of all ages and abilities. It’s more about getting a great, high-energy workout than pure tennis technique. You don’t have to be Rafael Nadal or Sam Stosur to enjoy the energising workout that is Cardio Tennis! Constant movement is the focus as a Tennis Australia qualified coach guides you through a series of fun and heartpumping drills that cater for all abilities and fitness levels. On average a Cardio Tennis workout runs for 45 to 60 minutes and is comprised of: 5-10 minute warm-up; 30-50

minute cardio tennis segment with drill-based and play-based activities; 5-10 minute cool down. Participants wear heart rate monitors, exercise to music, use low-compression balls and a variety of equipment, including agility ladders. And, at the end of your session, you can check your stats on the heart-rate monitor to find out just how hard you worked! Lose weight, get fit, have fun. Cardio Tennis is enjoyed best with friends – male or female. If you like exercising in a group, then you will find Cardio Tennis the perfect motivator. Get a group of mates together or make some new friends in a fun and active atmosphere! Please contact: Rob 0431 386 333.

For those that want to upgrade to “low cost”, Locale has available bargain pizzas, jugs of beer and bottles of wine for just $10 each” During March there will be other local sports and leisure activities showcased to enable Cooroy residents the opportunity to see, try and sign on to get active, improve health and social opportunities, and set a better example for our young ones. More information next month. Cooroy is seeking friendly parents, grandparents or anyone who would like to donate a bit of time to become “Community Coaches”. The Australian Sports Commission will provide a no cost course in March to enable those interested to become qualified in assisting people to get active in a friendly, non competitive way. For those interested please contact Sandy at the Club.

For those that have not been to Locale in the last month, please do so and check out the new menu, delectable desserts and to say hi to newcomer Kris Kiellerup. He appreciates your honest feedback to ensure he is meeting your needs, and looks forward to meeting you. The Memorial Hall needs you and your support! Events already calendarised in the Hall that need your attendance is “Cooroy’s Got Talent”, and there is also a cookbook in the frenzy! If you can help in any way, please contact Yvonne on 0413133791, otherwise just attend and have a great time! And in case you have not yet heard….the car is nearly here! Yes, courtesy of Daddows Cooroy, a brand new Chery J1 will find a new home with one of our lucky members. Call in and find out how to win.
