Pomona Church, pictured over the years, is about to celebrate turning 100.

Centenary celebrations about to start for historic Pomona Church POMONA’S St Patrick’s Church is celebrating 100 years. In Pomona on Saturday 26 March, the Noosa District Catholic Parish is inviting all to celebrate, with the parish community, the first 100 years of St Patrick’s Church. The church was built in 1921-1922 on a site donated by Vince Bazzo. The timber was donated and cut by Arthur Bull, and Paddy Dwyer gave the timber for the altar. Before the church, mass was held in the Show Hall and later, by Father Wright in the Majestic Hall. The finished church cost about 900 pounds and was quite a large building, being 28 feet wide and over 40 feet long. The church was opened on 26 March 1922, and on this day, the twin daughters of Mr and Mrs Jack Bazzo, Lena and Ella, were baptised by Father Wright. This was the first ceremony in the new church. The first marriage, solemnised by Father Wright, was between Fred Woods and Molly Tierney.

Big on products. Big on service. And big on local banking We deliver the products and technology you’d expect from a big bank, plus the personal service you wouldn’t. In 1937, extensions were made to the front and rear of the church, and the sanctuary and sacristy accommodation were improved. The old debt had just been cleared and the additions cost nearly 300 pounds. This debt was liquidated in 1943. The church was closed at one point in the 1970s and in 1983, as the new Parish Priest, Father Basil Meaney re-opened Pomona Church for the celebration of Mass. In 2012, restoration work was done to repair and

restore the church. The centenary celebration on 26 March will begin at 12.30 pm for a 1 pm start, with light refreshments followed by onsite entertainment and historical displays. Celebrations will conclude with Mass starting at 4 pm, with Archbishop Mark Coleridge presiding. To assist with catering and seating, bookings are essential. Booking details will be made available closer to the date. For further information, visit: www.noosacatholic.com.
