Edgy Art Exhibition Set To Shake Things Up! 40 Under 40 exhibition is not your run of the mill wine and cheese art exhibition. This edgy exhibition aims to not only showcase the young local art scene but also to shake things up by challenging the community’s perceptions of what is considered contemporary art in our regional setting. In this next exhibition to be held at the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy 40 talented artists from the region who are 40 years old and under will be on display. This project was the brainchild of Co-Curator and Artist, Amanda Bennetts. Amanda says she created the exhibition as “We have an abundance of talented young visual artists who live in the area who may not otherwise get an opportunity to showcase their art with other local young emerging and professional artists”. Amanda wants to change the face of the Sunshine Coast arts scene to include younger artists and create ongoing opportunities for these artists in the hope of keeping our artists in the area, where they would usually leave for capital cities. Butter Factory Coordinator Alicia Sharples says, “Working with Amanda Bennetts on this project has been amazing, she is inspired to represent the emerging young artists in our region and has brought together an exhibition which is at once edgy & aesthetically stunning. Extending the exhibition to artists from all disciplines, it will include mediums of video, film and electronic imaging as well as ceramics, drawing, fibre arts, graphic design, installation, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Cooroy Fusion Festival kicks off for 2020 Planning is well underway for the 2020 Cooroy Fusion Festival which will be held on Saturday 9th May, with calls for sponsors, stallholders and food vendors currently open. This year’s Cooroy Fusion Festival will be held in the precinct including Apex Park, Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy Community Library and the Lower Mill Site. As it does every year, it will be a Fusion of everything Cooroy has to offer and will include the annual Lifeline Denim Sale, the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show at the CWA hall and the woodworking displays of the Cooroora Woodworkers and Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group in Lower Mill Road. A full program of fun, food, entertainment and
community stalls will be once again jam-packed with many of our favourites among with many new and exciting events. Barry Charles and his Band will be an entertainment highlight in the Bendigo Bank Entertainment tent, along with last year’s crowd favourites, “The Inadequates” – who since performing in Cooroy in 2019 went on to be crowned 2019 Australian National Busking Championship winners. A Target Zero focus to reduce plastic, recycle and compost will once again be a focus to keep our community healthy and clean. The Great Australian Pottery Throwdown, will be back again in 2020, at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre following its success last year. The Cooroy Fusion Fes-

Council needs to plan for new fire conditions
The last 6 months has revealed how vulnerable the Australian landscape is to extreme fire events and a changing climate, says Noosa mayoral candidate Tony Wellington. “Experts across the country, including the Bureau of Meteorology and a bevy of former fire chiefs, have noted that the unprecedented fires that Australia has been experiencing are significantly influenced by climate change,” Wellington said. “These fires have been a wake-up call, particu-
larly for Queensland. Popular wisdom had long been that Queensland didn’t burn in the same way or at the same intensity as southern states. But drier conditions, less soil moisture and low humidity has resulted in Queensland fires occurring earlier than ever before and even in places that had previously not burnt for over a thousand years, such as tropical rainforests. “In Noosa Shire, the fires began in early September. That is hitherto unheard of. Even the ferocity of the local
fires came as a surprise to our fire fighters. “The take-home message is that we need to rethink our approach to fire in the Noosa Shire. That means renewed consideration of controlled or hazard reduction burning. Close scrutiny of hazard reduction burning will require expert advice, as well as discussions with our First Nation people. “Noosa Council has long carried out controlled burning during the winter months when conditions are appropriate. This is done in
conjunction with the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services as well as Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service. With the fire season beginning earlier in the year, the window of opportunity for such hazard reduction burning is shrinking, which is why we need to rethink our approach. “It’s important to be clear that hazard reduction burning is not the whole answer. Indeed, hazard reduction burning does not appear to prevent fires in extreme or catastrophic conditions – some of the
fires in NSW and SA have raced through areas that had recently received hazard reduction burns. “We may also need to rethink our approach to development approvals in rural and rural residential areas in relation to fire risk. Many of the developments and subdivisions previously considered to be low risk may need to be reassessed in relation to changing weather patterns. This could result in changes to the planning scheme to better account for future fire risks. “The matter of fireresistant building also needs to be analysed. This may mean lobbying for improved fire-resistant construction standards in the state and national building codes. “Of course, Council’s soon-to-be-completed Climate Change Adaptation Plan will consider the impacts of a changing climate in relation to all manner of risks, including fire. But there is still a body of work to be done that will involve expert advice on the back of recent fire experiences. “If re-elected as Mayor, I will commit to ensuring that this analysis and work is carried out diligently, urgently and thoroughly.”
Funding secured for much-needed roads projects Community calls to upgrade two of the Noosa region’s most frustrating traffic issues have been answered. Independent Noosa MP Sandy Bolton announced she has secured $2.8 million to finalise designs and start early works on the Six Mile Creek Bridge #7 and upgrades to the Cooroy Noosa RoadBeckman’s Road intersection. “Transport and Main Roads Minster Mark
Bailey has written back to me confirming there is funding to start early works for both projects, which is welcome news for our community,” Ms Bolton said. “There is $1 million to finalise design for the new roundabout at Beckman’s Road and Cooroy-Noosa Road intersection, which is stage 1 of the longpromised Tewantin Bypass. “There is also $1.8
million to start re-locating services and complete the design for a new two-way bridge at Six Mile Creek on Pomona-Kin Kin Road. “I’m thrilled that we can finally get works started. “The total cost to deliver both projects is expected to be around $30 million, and I will continue the fight to secure the funding during Budget 2020/21 to finish the job.” Ms Bolton said the Department of Transport
and Main Roads had advised her it is expected to start the pre-construction works by mid-2020. “This means TMR and Noosa Shire Council can continue working together on the Beckman’s Rd agreement, while TMR can also settle on a final design to upgrade and flood-proof the 85-yearold timber bridge over Six Mile Creek between Pomona and the Cooran turnoff,” Ms Bolton said.
“There is still plenty of work ahead of us, however to see the first ‘shovel in the ground’ will be a great sight! I would like to acknowledge and thank all the community members who lent their voices to the call for action on these issues. “Your advocacy has helped show how urgent these upgrades are, and I will continue to ensure they remain priorities for the state government.”

Meet the Candidates Revised spillway design for the Lake Macdonald Dam
The Lake Macdonald Dam is scheduled to be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program. It will be the first major upgrade to the dam since the wall was raised in 1980. The upgrade will involve building a new concrete spillway and reconstructing the embankments to better protect the structure against extreme events of nature. Seqwater has been looking at ways to reduce the environmental and social impacts of the construction project and redesigning the spillway to better protect aquatic life. The new design includes an ‘ogee style’ spillway which will improve the passage of fish and turtles downstream when the storage is full. They are also looking at ways to reduce construction traffic during project implementation. Construction of early works for the project will begin this year, including replacing the existing bridge to the Noosa Water Treatment

Plant and relocating existing services and utilities. Improvements to the SEQ Water Grid will also be undertaken so that we can continue to provide water to the Noosa region during the construction period. These upgrades will deliver the long-term benefit of permanently improving water supply security for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast. To safely build the new dam the water level will be temporarily lowered in the lake. The lake lowering is scheduled to take place in 2021. However, should the current dry conditions continue, the lake lowering and overall project timing will be subject to further water supply security assessments as required. An aquatic management plan is being developed to prepare for the relocation of aquatic life during the lake lowering timeframe. The lake will now remain open to recreation activities in 2020, including fishing and paddling.

It’s come and gone for 2020, but our national day always reminds me of the great Australian dream - to own your own home. In recent years it’s been referred to as a mirage, but helping people on the road to that dream is one of the most enjoyable parts of a bank manager’s job. Like the pursuit of any big dream, there’s some work involved and some processes to follow in setting up your home loan. You will need to have saved a certain amount of your own funds as a deposit which is usually a minimum of 5% of the purchase price. There are also other costs to allow for, such as the loan set up costs, stamp duty for the purchase as well as your own solicitors charges and search fees. Having the deposit is the first big step in the process. You also need to fit the criteria of the lender’s policy for such things as job stability and capacity to repay the loan. These things will all be taken in to account during the assessment period. The assessment process may vary from bank to bank and depend upon what type of loan you’re applying for. For example at Bendigo Bank your local manager will have their own lending authority to approve most credit cards, personal and residential loans. It’s always a good idea to get to know the staff at your local and the manager in particular. With all the electronic means of banking in this day and age, ATM’s, internet, phone
banking, direct credit and debits, not all customers regularly visit their branch and getting to know each other can be difficult. A bank will need to use letters, emails or phone calls to stay in touch with customers they usually don’t see. Nothing is more reassuring during any application process than feeling confident in the representative guiding you through it. Having written more than a dozen “People with Purpose in Our Community” articles over the last year or so, the Cooroy Rag and Cooroy Termite & Pest Control have suggested that I start this year with an article that sheds some light on “the story behind the stories”, including the storyteller (i.e. me!). I should emphasize that this is completely their idea and not just an exercise in selfpromotion!! So, who am I? My name is Ian Pugh and I am a Cooroy resident and freelance writer. Originally from Zimbabwe, I moved here with my wife and son more than 8 years ago. We are so happy that we chose Cooroy as a place to settle. Despite the enormous problems in Zimbabwe, it was still very difficult to leave – after all, it has been home to us our whole lives, as well as being a truly beautiful country (now tragically ravaged by corruption and mismanagement). It took a bit of time getting used to Australia – how everything works, etc., but it sure helped that we came to this area! We are small-town people and Cooroy has everything we could possibly hope for. We are now proudly Australian citizens – although I confess to having a huge dilemma when the Wallabies play the Springboks! I write for a living – everything from brochures to websites to magazine articles – and even children’s books. We also run a small graphic design company called Blue Apple Projects (my wife, Lara, is a graphic designer) and we are fortunate enough to have both local and overseas clients (including World Vision International). I also write for World Vision and have recently completed a series of children’s books for WV Afghanistan (cautionary tales about the scourge of child marriage, unfortunately still so prevalent in that country and elsewhere). I love doing that kind of work and hopefully the stories will make a small difference somewhere. I’m also writing a time-travel adventure series for young readers which I have
high hopes for! It was last year sometime when Cooroy Termite & Pest Control approached me about writing a monthly article that focuses on people who are doing good things in our community. In their line of work, the staff at Cooroy Termite & Pest Control come across many people with interesting stories who are quietly making a difference. They had the idea to tell some of these stories and the Cooroy Rag liked the sound of it as well. To be honest, I imagined there would just be a few articles, but I had clearly underestimated how many interesting people we have in our community. Over the last year or so, I have had the pleasure of meeting everyone from scoutmasters to nurses to environmentalists to charity shop angels to SES and firefighting heroes – and the list goes on! It has been an absolute pleasure writing these articles and the plan is to carry on into the new year. It didn’t take me long to discover that Cooroy is indeed a special place with an amazing community spirit. It feels like we have only just scratched the surface and I’m already lining up interviews for the new year. Horace John Page with sons Herbert and John purchase land at Boreen Point after moving from Bundaberg. Herbert Page marries Edith Davis and have four children – Allan (died at 2 years old), George, Robert and Gwen. Herbert and Edith and their 3 children move to Pomona so that the children can attend school and Herbert builds a Furniture Workshop and later a Motor Garage on the present Page Furnishers site. After leaving school and working as a buttermaker for 7 years George becomes apprenticed to his father as a Cabinetmaker. HW Page & Son is registered as a Firm with Herbert Page and George Page as members (in the years between 1919 and 1935 the business also traded as Page Furniture and Hardware and Page & Saunders). George marries Ruth Lammas, a local school teacher, and have 3 children – Heather, Ken and Allan. George enlists with the Australian Defence Force. George returns from the Army and resumes manufacturing furniture with his father. Herbert retires from the firm and sometime after it trades and GD & RE Page. Ken Page is almost 17 years of age and in his second year as an apprentice cabinetmaker when he is killed in a car accident outside of Pomona. George Page purchases a sawmill in Kilkivan that has a hoop pine quota. The smaller hoop pine are cut and run into mouldings and the larger logs are peeled into veneers and made into core board. The sawmill was sold to Noel Chapman around 1980. The business is registered as Page Furnishers Pty Ltd and Allan Page leaves school and begins an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker. Fire destroys everything as the factory is burnt to the ground. The vacant Butter Factory across the road is rented and new machinery installed while the new factory is built on the present site. The new building is completed and business resumes in the new factory. Allan marries Ann Bichel and they have 3 children – Gary, Karen and Russell. Page Furnishers purchases the now vacant Butter Factory and associated land and the building is converted into the Paint and Polish Shop. Page Furnishers wins Queensland Apprenticeship Award for efforts in the field of apprenticeships. The new Steel Shop building is constructed on land beside the Butter Factory to facilitate an increasing trend toward steel furniture requirements. George Page is awarded with a Certificate in the Queensland Businessman of the Year Awards. The Governor of Queensland, Sir Walter Campbell attends Page Furnishers and is impressed by the size and manufacturing capability of the business. The timber storage shed is purchased from the recently closed Wilson Hart Sawmill in Maryborough and is dismantled and re-erected as the timber storage shed in Mill Street, Pomona. The first extension of the steel shop is added – 570m2. George Page passes away after a short illness aged 80 years and Allan Page becomes Managing Director. The new flow through Powder Coat Line is installed to keep up with the painting of the ever-increasing steel production. Ann Page becomes director of Page Furnishers. The second extension to the steel shop is added – 570m2. The timber shed in Mill Street is converted from the timber storage shed to the packing and dispatch with a new 500m2 building extension added. On February 1, 300mm of rain falls in 3 hours from a 1 in 100 year rain event and Page Furnishers timber manufacturing storage and dispatch buildings are flooded with up to 1 metre of water. With the aid of local volunteers and dedicated workforce the business is back up and running in 2 weeks and with persistence from our long-term insurance broker, some much needed insurance was received. A one metre high concrete bunded wall is constructed around the timber manufacturing and storage/dispatch buildings to prevent a future flood event – completed in 2014. 1000 solar panels are installed (500 on the timber manufacturing and 500 on the steel manufacturing rooves) to help with offsetting the rising power costs. 100 years of continuous furniture manufacture is achieved by the same family in the same location.

Herb was known around town as ‘Blue Shirt Page’ because he always wore a blue shirt to work.
On February 21, 1919, Herbert William Page purchased 2 roods of land in Cooran Road (later named Factory Street) at Pomona from John Ronald and built a cabinet making workshop on the property. Previously he had to travel to people’s properties with all his tools and equipment and live on site for quite some time while he was making their furniture. The business soon grew to include a hardward shop and a motor garage as well.

The Governor of Queensland, Sir Walter Campbell, came to Pomona in February, 1986. Page Furnishers gained a lot of their work by tendering for and winning Government contracts such as furniture for the Army and Air Force bases, desks and chairs for schools and ‘met screens’ for the weather bureau. Their vast array of modern machinery enabled them to compete against the best in the business
In 1995 the factory was passed on to Allan Page after the death of his father George on Jun 25 1995, aged 80 years. In 2004 Page Furnishers employed a staff of 75, including Allan’s wife Ann and their children Gary, Russell and Karen Page, the fourth generation to work there

Ernie Bazzo, George, Allan and Laurie Backhouse Next day, the townsfolk all pitched in to help clean up the mess, which was a huge task. The factory had been one of the main employers in the town, and the workers faced a bleak future now that it was no longer there. However, they managed to temporarily place all of the workers, with the hlep of other manufacturers around the district. Some of the furniture manufacturing was trasferred to the old unused butter factory across the street, which George rented, and the business continued on there whilst the new factory was being built
Page Furnishers has seen good times and bad. On a very hot November 19, 1971, a large fire totally destroyed the factory. The staff had left work for the day and the heat ignited some of the thinners used in the painting process. The local fire brigade was soon on the scene, but with all the stock of timber and flammable materials on the premises, the fire had already taken hold and the fire brigade were powerless against the heat and flames.
Once the debris had been cleared away, it was time for the re-build to begin, and George was on hand to help secure the first pylon into the ground
It took about 12 months to completely rebuild and set up the new factory. It was equipped with the latest machinery, and all the employees were reinstated. Thanks to the generosity of the other furniture and joinery businesses in the district which employed them in the meantime, the workers had not been left without a source of income. In 1974 George purchased the old butter factory building across the road and the business expanded

The original furniture factory during the 1950s and 1960s When Herb retired, George took over the running of the business and converted it from diesel power to electricity in 1946. There were pleny of orders for furniture, but the business struggled initially because some of the customers did not pay their accounts after they had received their new furniture. The family had to live very frugally during these times, but George was determined to make a success of the business and he eventually did so during the 1960s by taking on more large Government contracts and gradually phasing out the private orders.

Fresh Look exhibition by Dom Violi “A Fresh Look” is the inspired artwork of Don Violi. His new exhibition stems from his love and fascination of the local landscape. Dom says, ‘through the changing colours and light on the mountains and trees that surround me, I am provided with constant inspiration for my work’. Dom moved to the Sunshine Coast from Melbourne three years ago and now resides at Mt. Cooran. He is an Italian born Australian and has travelled extensively to many countries including Canada, Singapore and Italy where he has exhibited his art. In this art selection, semi abstract elements are incorporated with more realistic ones to communicate a joy and an interaction between the viewer and the observer. Dom feels that he is ‘at times more concerned with the colour of places, rather than the image or representation of a place’. A former teacher of Art and Visual Communication and Design he also specialised in conducting workshops on Aboriginal Art and Spirituality and on the wider context of Art and Spirituality in Western, Eastern and Primal cultures. Dom has also published many articles on these topics in professional magazines and has a chapter in Out in the Antipodes, a book of Australian and New Zealand psychology. health What is musculoskeletal (MSK) therapy

Musculoskeletal therapy is the treatment of pain and abnormal function of our joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and soft tissues by some form of physical therapy other than an operation. That is, treating spinal, back, neck pain and pain in the arms and legs. For medical practitioners it is a subspecialty of medicine practised by doctors after a period of specialized training, usually a post graduate diploma. It is a unique and not widely available subspecialty due to the shortage of doctors trained in the area. We know about orthopaedics as a specialty and these are doctors who treat most arthritic and other pain syndromes through surgical operations. We know of chiropractors who treat pain and restrictions through joint manipulation, mobilization and spinal adjustments. We know of physiotherapists who treat muscle and joint conditions through exercise therapy, massage, education and rehabilitation. Musculoskeletal doctors treat the disorders of the spine, joints and limbs using a wide range of modalities, similar to other physical therapists but with additional techniques. They use a large “toolbox” of treatments and tend to more often treat pain. What is in the toolbox? Accurate diagnosis through good history and examination. Spending time to get to the heart of the problem. Physical therapy like joint manipulation and mobilization to free up the locked segment. Exercise and muscle stretching therapy to build weak muscles and allow optimal performance and balance. Myofascial therapy:- identification and treatment of “trigger points” ie. small knots within muscles which restrict movement and cause referred pain .These can be treated with injections of local anaesthetic, “wet needling” or acupuncture needles
“dry needling”. Trigger points are a common cause of ongoing pain and are easily treated with minimal discomfort. Prolotherapy:- the use of concentrated solutions of dextrose(sugar) usually a 25% solution injected into joints to help prevent progression of arthritis.There is very good evidence for benefit and widespread use for knee arthritis. Cortisone injections into and around joints to assist with flare ups of arthritic pain. Used carefully these can give great relief especially in shoulders and entheses( points of tendon or ligament insertion into bone) Pharmacotherapy: the use of anti-inflammatory and pain medication. Musculoskeletal medical practitioners like to work with their physiotherapy and chiropractic colleagues to complement their good work. Like any form of therapy it is not 100% perfect but will give you your best chance of pain relief without surgery so you can remain active and get on with life because activity equals longevity. Eye examinations for children are becoming more important than ever. “Children themselves often won’t let you know that there is anything wrong with their eyes because they just assume that’s the way everyone sees. That’s why we urge parents to bring their kids in before they even start school and very two years thereafter to give us the best chance to pick up vision problems early”, says optometrist Jenny Currie. “Our special interest, post-graduate qualifications and decades of experience in paediatric vision care gives us unique insights and the skills to treat our younger patients.” “Poor vision can interfere with your child’s ability to learn both in and out of the classroom, and can also stunt their emotional and social development. Seeing your child before they start school means we can ensure their visual system is functioning optimally for learning” says Jenny. An astounding 1 in 5 children suffers from an undetected vision problem, however the research shows a sharp decline in optometric services to children of all ages up to 14. This trend is alarming because up to 80% of the information in the classroom is obtained through the visual system. It’s Wednesday … hump day, but with a few more days left before the end of the week, your head is pounding … you ask yourself: “How am I going to make it through today, let alone the rest of the week?! Why am I getting these headaches so often and how do I find out what to do to treat them best?!!” Well the first step is figuring out what type of headache is causing your pain. If you know your headache type, you can treat it correctly … is it a migraine, a cluster headache or tension … or perhaps it may be sinus?? What lifestyle factors may help me to manage this condition? The best way to manage headaches is to avoid them. And to avoid them, you need to know what things (or triggers) bring them on. By finding and avoiding your triggers, you can limit how often you get headaches and how bad they are. Here are some of the most common headache triggers: • Stress (either during a stressful time or right after stress subsides). • Menstrual cycle in women. • Changes in your routine, such as how much you exercise or how much you sleep. • Fasting or skipping meals. • Changes in the weather, heat, or high humidity. • Bright lights, glare, or reflected sunlight.
• Foods, such as chocolate. • Alcohol • Strong odours from perfume, paint, dust, and certain flowers. • Some prescribed medicines (your pharmacist can advise on this). Try to avoid as many triggers as you can. Triggers add up, so the fewer you have at one time, the better your chance of preventing a headache. To manage your headaches: • Use a headache diary to find your triggers. • Make sure you sleep, exercise, and eat on a regular schedule. • Don’t eat foods that are likely to trigger your headaches. • Manage stress. • Make sure you are drinking an adequate amount of water daily • Avoid smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke. the year, especially at the National level where he finished inside the top 8 on all six apparatus, with a 1st all around, 1st on rings, 2nd on parallel bars and a 3rd on pommel, as well as gold in the team competition. Due to his successful performance at the 2019 nationals he was selected for the open level tour which will compete in Houston Texas. He will join the Australian team of seven, including two of his Qld team mates and members from ACT, Victoria and New South Wales for the 2020 RD761 Junior International Team Cup and Men’s Invitational with competitors from USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Poland.
Champion, Finlay Jones has topped it off by winning the prestigious Queensland Gymnastics MAG open level athlete of the year award. The award recognises competition success for
Cooroy Gymnastics Club celebrated a special achievement for one of their gymnasts recently. Gymnast Damon celebrated his 11th year at the club and is now the longest attending gymnast at the club, having started way back in March 2008. “Damo” received the award from his coach Ned Baker, who has been coaching him for the last three years. It has been a big year for the gymnast who has just turned 18 and finished year 12 at Sunshine beach high school. He is hoping to study art at TAFE next year. He has his own YouTube channel where he creates his own basic “how to draw” videos. His mum Karen said, “gymnastics has been great for his strength and receptive language skills and in building his strength and keeping him active.” Damon is also a keen golfer and plays netball and has been involved in seahorse nippers at Noosa Surf Club for the last 8 years.

member Llew O’Brien has made possible the improvement of an area of creek banks and surrounds to create an attraction for wildlife. The installation of some possum nesting boxes and native bee nest sites will also help. These changes are small ongoing steps in preserving and improving the golf course environment and habitat to encourage and attract wildlife.
